George is getting older and having a harder time getting around with his three legs and arthritis. He’s also been struggling extra with separation anxiety lately (luckily his mom works from home). Besides acupuncture and pain meds, warm soaks in the tub can also help his muscles relax. Update on Oscar: We were so lucky to get the kindest exotics doctor at UCD and her name is…wait for it… Dr. Hawkins!!! *If you don’t know who our other beloved Dr. Hawkins is, go check out the Cromwell saga! UC Davis is full at the moment but they are going to intake him now to provide ongoing pain relief and get a CT scan scheduled so they can see if there are more stones the X-ray missed. The visible stone is so large, he may need surgery to remove it and he will probably need to be hospitalized for several days and have a feeding tube placed, possibly for weeks until his system recovers. As you know, this has been an over-the-top year as far as vet bills go, but we are committed to providing the very best care to each of our residents. Sometimes this means our employee goes back to volunteer status for a month or more so we can pay for veterinary care, sometimes it means we sacrifice time or our personal lives. But it is ALWAYS worth it. ALWAYS. Thank you for supporting our work to end speciesism, to protect the vulnerable, and to love one another well. We hope you will donate toward Oscar’s surgery and help give him the long life (100+ years) he deserves. 🐢♥️ *His medical bill from Saturday evening was over $500 and today’s estimate for hospitalization and surgery is approximately $3200. Great news about Oscar! He got the BEST doctor last night at the emergency clinic who has a Sulcata of his own. He was able to dig out a large amount of solidified calcium and waste causing the obstruction, did an X-ray to check for any bladder stones (none were found), and gave him fluids to rehydrate him. His prolapse near his rectum resolved itself once the obstruction was removed and they are hopeful he will continue to improve! They said that while he’s on the small side for a Sulcata his shell is one of the best they’ve seen as far as lack of pyramiding goes and his diet is excellent. He’ll be getting some medication, soaks in the tub, and an extra toasty bedroom (he lives in the house in the winter), while he recovers. Today’s turkey of the day is Snowball! Snowball was rescued in November of 2018 from a rural Utah slaughterhouse along with 99 other turkeys. She was destined to be killed, like millions of other turkeys, at only 5-6 months old so humans could eat her flesh for Thanksgiving, but thankfully she was saved by the kindness of activists who spoke up for her. Snowball had never gotten to be outside, see the sky, or feel grass beneath her feet. She is now one of our oldest turkeys at Blackberry Creek (along with her sister, Sugar Plum who came from the same rescue), and at 4.5 years old they’ve gotten to experience much more of life than the 46 million turkeys killed for a holiday meal each year in the US alone. Snowball is snuggly, loving, gentle, and a beautiful testament to how resilient these amazing, sentient beings can be. She loves hugs, watermelon, blueberries, and relaxing in the shade under her sail shade in the summer months. It helps us fund rescue expenses, veterinary care, nutritious food, soft bedding (domestic turkeys need deep bedding to help their feet support their enormous bodies), medication, and daily care. Today’s turkey of the day is Helen Sturkie! Helen was rescued last November by @northbayanimalservices from a terrible hoarding case where she was starved and left with severe infection eating through both of her feet. The veterinarian on staff wanted to euthanize her because he knew her wounds were severe and that people just don’t pay for veterinary care for turkeys, but Officer Mark had other ideas. We were so grateful to find out about her needs, and because your generous donations, we were able to afford hospitalization, wound care, and eventually surgery for her feet. Miss Sturkie (named after a veterinary textbook author at @medicalcenterforbirds ) is exceptional in every sense of the word. She has been to countless doctor’s appointments at @medicalcenterforbirds and had many weeks of limb profusions with antibiotics at our small animal office @motherlodevet with Dr. Natalie @nstab6 She is an expert car traveler (and selfie taker) and rides on the back seat without complaint. She is calm, gentle, sweet, and affectionate, and we can’t imagine the sanctuary without her. Helen is a wonderful ambassador for turkeys and especially for equity in veterinary care which we advocate hard for here at @blackberrycreek Please consider symbolically “adopting” Helen Sturkie this Thanksgiving and help us continue to provide her and all our rescued turkey friends, the lives of freedom and peace they deserve. Today’s turkey of the day is Bill! ✨ Bill is made of magic. His beautiful face changes color depending on his mood and he can retract his snood, the long piece of fleshy skin that hangs over his beak, to be a perfectly magical unicorn horn.🦄 Bill is, without a doubt, one of the sweetest animals you’ll ever meet (though he does seem to have it out for one of our poor volunteers, sorry @airric6 😬). He was rescued in 2020 from a NorCal factory farm raising turkeys for a popular brand of lunch meat who you’ve most definitely heard of, but despite their humorous marketing, there’s nothing funny about what they do to millions upon millions of sentient beings. Bill is safe and loved, but has chronic health issues because of humans’ selective breeding to make turkeys as big as possible as fast as possible. The turkeys on Thanksgiving tables are all only 5-6 months old…just babies. It’s turkey time! This November, we’re celebrating turkeys for the unique individuals they are( starting with rescued friend, Sugar Plum! Sugar Plum was saved from ending up as someone’s Thanksgiving dinner in November of 2018 when she was just five months old. That makes her one of the oldest turkeys at Blackberry Creek at about 4.5 years old! Commercially bred turkeys are selectively bred by humans to get very big, very fast so they can be killed in just 5-6 months; this is done so farmers can maximize profit. Luckily, Sugar Plum has avoided many of the health issues broad breasted white turkeys can deal with and she is a quiet matriarch of our turkey flock. She is gentle and curious, friendly and wise, and loved for the unique person she is. We encourage you to symbolically “adopt” a turkey this year from Blackberry Creek.
