Here is my updated 2023 Fantasy Fest suggested list of items to consider for your Key West adventure. Feel free to add your own items and modify this list with your own suggestions:

I created this checklist for those Krewe that go with me on my annual Trips to Fantasy Fest.

So, with 128 days to go (as of 06/13/2023) for Fantasy Fest 2023 (October 20-29), please feel free to adapt and modify this list to meet your needs and criteria for your Fantasy Fest trip.

This changeable checklist of travel suggestions allows you to cherry pick travel items for trips to Fantasy Fest or similar destinations or venues:

AIRPORT & AIRPORT TRANSFERS: Passport, driver's license or other ID and copies of passport facepages in luggage) Covid vaccination card and/or negative Covid test results (optional) Airline ticket/confirmation number papers & itineraries Airport transfer documents Clothes for flights (bras, underwear, closed-toe shoes) Luggage with name tags, luggage locks and passport copies inside Luggage lined with empty trash bags that can later be used for dirty clothes, makeshift rain ponchos, covers for beach/pool bags in the rains Snacks, power and/or protein bars Empty water bottle Anti-bacterial/virus wipes or small Purel bottle Black ink pen for completing any paperworld/customs/immigration on the plane and/or airport terminal

Another consideration: A recommendation from a Krewe member is that Key West guests that plan to return to the next FF confirm their following year reservation and rates before they leave Key West–and get it in writing.

Finally, Check with the airlines the amount (weight) of baggage LEAVING Key West. There was a restriction on departing flights, not those arriving. Many veteran FF attendees ship their costumes and “gear” to the place they are staying, or to a package holding business. (e.g. Mail Boxes, UPS store, etc.) Check with where you are staying as most will accept incoming packages for arriving guests.

Obviously, not everyone would need all of these items but it is a start for picking and choosing those things you might want to have at Fantasy Fest. .

It's hard to believe. A tiny little Ran doll is now sitting in the palm of his hand. Bringing up a second hand, he cradles it gently. It's a precious thing, not merely a gift but an extension of the man himself. Kakucho knows to treat it with utmost care.

He notices the little loop on its head. He's seen things like this before, accessories to affix to bags and other luggage. Kakucho doesn't typically carry anything with him so he has to think about where to place it.

His eyes fall on his gym bag. The one thing he uses most often. Using a bit of string he loops tiny Ran around the metal buckle on it. Making sure it's extra secure. Proudly presenting his work to Ran for inspection.

Robin had recently been taken for being close to Lucius. He'd been lucky and left unharmed besides a few minor bruises and scratches. It was more the whole thing had shaken him up more than anything. But that was exactly why he needed a break with Lucius. The other had suprised him with the trip, giving Robin a new bag for all his luggage to start. Followed by certain outfits and accessories that were required to come. Honestly Robin would have been happy with that alone. But the gifts and attention kept coming. There was a whole range of things, and apparently more to come. It all instantly made him forget mostly what had happened. Instead focusing on Lucius and the array of items he was given. His personal favourite had been a plushie that he insisted was coming on the plane to help keep him calm. It wasn't that Robin was scared of flying, rather the tight spaces that triggered his claustrophia. There apparently appeared to be a plan for that though. Just before they left, a toy was slipped into Robin. Arriving at the airport meant Robin could do nothing but blush feeling like everyone knew about the toy. He gripped his plushie tightly as they were navigated through and eventually to yet another suprise. A private jet to whisk them away to whatever Lucius had planned for them. Pieces started to click together and he now understood the outfit he'd be given for today, the toy inside him, it was all for some fun on the plane. All something to suprise and distract Robin. Sitting in his sit, he let out a whine. No longer trying to hide his noises. His blush got darker when a manner of seconds later after his noise a steward came up asking if they needed anything. Robin quickly hid his face in Lucius' arm to hide away. "How much more till you touch me... or fun begining?" He managed to whimper out quietly, making sure the steward couldn't hear.

After ten years of self-imposed exile, Richard is back in his own native village in the Alps. He cannot tell what made him leave Berlin and go to the South in such a hurry. He cannot tell why he needed to take a break all of a sudden and leave his comfortable life in Prenzlauer Berg. Yet he felt obliged to come to the Alps and visit his family – at least ostensibly. Within ten years, he has never once visited, instead concentrating on working on his career, so why now? He arrived to Berlin as a twenty-five-year-old man, confused by what was going on in his head. Now, ten years later, his name needed no further commentary in Berlin and in Germany. He was successful, he was famous, he was popular. But he needed to visit his native village and he needed it now. If anyone asked, he said he needed to reconnect with his roots.

Once on the train, he thought about it again for the millionth time and still had to come to the same conclusion: he had to go, no reason. Something was pulling him there, something he couldn’t explain. He felt he needed to stay there at least until the Midsummer: it felt like a deadline, a point when at least some decisions will have been made.

He is staying in his mother’s original house, as she has moved to her new husband’s house after the second wedding. Her original house – the house he has been born in thirty-five years ago – has been standing alone and waiting for either his brother or him to claim it. The house, nothing special by any means, stood empty, nobody entering it, nobody taking care of it.

When he examines the building, going from the bedrooms to the hall and then to the kitchen, seeing everything was in the exact same place as he remembered. His luggage is waiting just behind the entrance door and he makes sure nobody sees their contents.

He is hungry. As the food is not yet finished, he has to wait so he goes through all the books in the kitchen – cookbooks mostly, but then he finds a stash of newspapers deposited on one of the shelves. His mother has been collecting them and the last issue is from the day he has left the village.

He looks at the title page: it features a story about a local joiner who has been accused of molesting a nineteen-year-old lady at the bonfire. This particular story is about the aftermath of the trial: the man’s honour has been cleaned but in the eyes of the villagers, he was still deemed guilty. There is a commentary in the article that the accused man decided to move to the North of the country (Schwerin? Leipzig?) and there is his portrait as well.

Richard looks at him carefully: the perfectly bowed lips, the sharp lines of the face, the pretty and sad doe eyes. Richard drops the newspaper as if burnt: he has seen this man, he has seen these pretty, sad eyes; he has seen them today and in this very village! But it’s impossible, the one that reminds him of the accused man is far, far too old – and he is blind. The investigating, critical sight is no longer present, at least in the physical sense.

Before he can think about it, the food is ready and after the food, he is too tired to do anything but go to bed. He falls asleep and he sleeps long and dreamlessly, until the next noon.

After lunch, instead of going to his mother’s, Richard unpacks the second suitcase, the one he takes a better care of. Yesterday, he discovered the cellar is empty apart from several wine bottles and mother’s sewing machine. Seeing that, Richard almost smiled. Welcoming gifts were given without the givers ever knowing it.

Richard takes the suitcase downstairs and opens it. The garments and accessories belong to a woman, several women, to be exact, but not because Richard has found a long-term lover in Berlin. He takes the clothes out and dresses in them. The feel of the materials is just right, right for the moment at least and he sits down, absorbing the relaxing sensation of them.

Of course, he goes outside that day, to meet his mother and stepfather and other people, too. He sees his childhood friends: the quiet Ollie; his opposite, chatty Paul; the family-bound Flake; and the stern-looking Christoph. They sit in front of Flake’s house and talk for hours on end.

Just before Richard stands up to go home, he sees him again – the old man is walking slowly towards them, accompanied by two lady hunters and a white stick. He looks their way when they are going past them and Richard feels it again – both the impression the old man can see him clearly and the one he has seen him before today. But it doesn’t make sense.

That night, he lays in his bed sleepless, the newspaper at his bedside table. He gets up at one in the morning and goes to the cellar. He hasn’t had a moment to wear the clothes again -- immediately before he left Berlin, he had too much work, being a famous chef in a prestigious hotel and after he arrived to the village, he only had his pleasant moment before meeting the others.

When he came home, he sat in the kitchen hungry, cold and annoyed. He then took the newspaper and investigated it again, arriving to the same conclusion: the eyes of the old man and the ones of the accused one are the same.

Richard has now established himself in the community: within the first week, he has joined a marching band; within the first month, he has found a job as a cook / help in the village pub; and, after some ribbing from his friends and the elders, he has taken several ladies to his bed. Not that they weren’t willing to: the second he has set foot into the village, they haven’t stopped trying to get his attention. And not that he wouldn’t be willing, either: he has had his share of male and female lovers alike... but there was something that was bothering him: the blind old man now dominated his dreams, and not in that form exclusively.

More often than not, it began with the old man approaching him – he wanted more beer, help and suchlike – but the longer they talked, the younger he turned until he was Richard’s age, with dark hair whose fringe hung into his all-knowing blue-green eyes, with large, muscular frame, smelling alluringly. At first, Richard was horrified. Later, they talked some more as young men. Even later, they shared a kiss. And the last week, the other has been turning into a werewolf and pressing his paws into Richard’s hips hungrily.

The worst thing, however, isn’t that he wants a man or that he wants the blind old man; it is that the young version of the old man looks exactly like the accused man from the newspaper. He is attractive, irresistibly so, but Richard has witnessed the same man pulling aggressive drunks from the village pub with one hand, looking unimpressed. Richard is not a small man – in fact, he is only a few centimetres shorter than the one from his dreams – but he is scared of the man. In his dreams, he can’t take his eyes off him but when he wakes up, he has uncomfortable goosebumps every time he thinks of him.

Ollie is the first one that sees his discomfort – at first, Richard doesn’t want to serve the old man and takes the cooking jobs exclusively to avoid looking at him. Ollie takes him aside and asks if he can help. Richard stutters and tells him there is no need to worry. Ollie smiles and squeezes his arm reassuringly. No problem, he says, he will tell nobody. He then lifts a hand and wipes the rest of the lipstick from Richard’s mouth. Everyone is special, he says. At least it’s Ollie, Richard tells himself; Ollie won’t tell.

The dreams are wilder now and the Midsummer is approaching fast – his own birthday. He regularly finds himself wet with sweat in the middle of the night and falls asleep during the day because his sleep is so thin. His family is looking at him worriedly. He hasn’t touched the contents of the suitcase – that particular one – for weeks. He has no energy for it; his once bright and admired face is now pale, greyish even and he has dark circles under his eyes. He feels like a mess and is one as well.

One night, he is fed up – fed up with his insomnia, his obsession, his decision to come here. He goes to the cellar and dresses up to the nines – an evening dress, full makeup, jewellery. The village streets are empty, so he goes outside and while still lurking in the shadows, he is out finally. He walks up and down the street and feels better for a while. En route back to the cellar, he spots something by the corner of his eye. He turns his head to check it out but sees nothing. He heads back to his house and undresses quickly, his good mood gone. Completely soaked in the tub, he is able to hide the tears of frustration even from himself.

It´s the Midsummer night; everyone is there having a good time, even Flake. Richard, dressed in his favourite black jeans and silver-and-black T-shirt, watches the fires at the neighbouring meadow and unconsciously, he looks for the old man. He loses his nerve when he cannot see him and decides to check on him; with everyone else here, maybe he needs help?

Before he makes it to the village, sleepy but still functioning, he sees a familiar figure in the empty street. He is dressed in exclusively black, after all, what other colour has he been expecting? As if he were dreaming again, he approaches it. The figure sticks his arms towards him and pulls him closer, he knows him, he is his dream lover, his werewolf. Before he realises what is happening, he is put to the ground, the lover is gone and the villagers are coming. They ask him what happened. He can’t tell – even he could find the words, how could he tell them? How could he betray him to a crowd that could turn furious within seconds?

It takes some time before Richard is ready to function again and his first instinct is not – surprisingly – to get dressed but to visit the blind man. He goes to his house and the door is open. It seems to him they are all open for him. There is nobody in the kitchen. There is also nobody in any of the other rooms. And then he opens the last door. He feels like Bluebeard’s wife and expects something awful in that room.

He notices a bed and that there is someone lying there: a raven-haired man in his thirties or forties with his back turned towards the door, seemingly asleep. Richard approaches him, absolutely not expecting that he would wake up and pull him closer. Once he sees correctly again, he sits up in the bed and the man is holding him at his waist with one hand. He is smiling as if Richard has done exactly what was expected of him.

„You found me,“ he says, voice deep and calming.

„I did? “Richard falters. Was he expected to be found out? He now notices the fake beard and old man clothes on the nightstand.

He points to it. „Why did you do it? Why would you... spend so much energy for just dressing up and fooling them?“

„I wanted to see their reactions. I have been sent away in shame as if I had seduced her – although I haven’t. If anything, it was the other way around – I turned her down. Yet they saw a violent person in me which I am not. Has my... other form – or my doings – hurt anybody or God forbid... you? “

„...no. No. I am fine. They are fine. It’s all fine,” Richard replies, still quite shaken from the discoveries he has made and from the intoxicating presence of the other.

Richard’s answer makes the man sigh in relief. „I didn’t mean to really be malicious. And now, would you show me what do you exactly do in the cellar of yours? “

Richard freezes. How does he know? What will happen now? Dressing as an older version of himself was one thing. Man dressing as a woman – and having no issues with it internally – was a completely different situation.

The man next to Richard laughs quietly. „This is quite a small community, there are no secrets here. It seems you are lucky that you haven’t been spotted so far by anyone else. Well, I have seen you. Nobody else, just me. And even then, I wasn’t meaning to. After all, you are not the only one that cannot sleep. I can tell you, you looked like a powerful vampire. Lethal, breaking men in. You certainly broke me then. “

Richard’s mouth is hanging open in disbelief. So, it wasn’t a feeling only! He has been watched! And not by just anybody, it had to be someone he wants.

But after what he experienced for the past months, nothing is strange anymore, especially in regards to the man he is talking to right this second.

„As I said, I am not opposed to what you do. If you want me, I want you. What do you say?"

„How do you know that I want you? How can you possibly know that?” Richard almost yells this time.

“First of all, no need to yell. And second of all, look where you are. You wouldn’t be here next to me right now if I didn’t matter to you.”

Richard is still sceptical. “How can I trust that you didn’t do what you were accused of... I mean you watched me. Unintentionally maybe but still.”

“I don’t mean you or anyone else harm. And how can I convince you? Yes, you are right: I have nothing but my word and your trust if you choose to give it to me… You just have to trust me.” He thinks for a moment. “Also… do I look like I’d like to soil my already destroyed reputation again?”

Richard looks at him speechless. What do I do? He thinks to himself.

His soon to be lover continues, now holding his hands. “And I would no longer risk it because… especially because I care about you since I saw you for the first time. Do you remember me? Because I do remember you… I actually remember the first time I ever saw you.” He proceeds to tell Richard all the details: them two playing in the same fields when they were around ten, Richard being admired even then by everyone, boys and girls alike, the man -- then a boy -- watching from the side. And then of course when Richard arrived with his two suitcases in the early spring.

By now, Richard has to believe him. He sees no malice in those expressive, sad and lonely eyes. He puts a hand against the other’s chest to feel his heart and says it again.

“And if all of that didn’t help, this surely will…” The man pulls him closer and kisses him.

First, Richard doesn’t know what to do but this feels right. He gives up all his doubts in the heat of the moment, allows himself to say his lover’s name and he whispers it to his ear, more than once.

Ollie came looking for him. He saw everything and was worried. But when he opened the door the old man’s bedroom, he saw them next to each other, sleeping, covered in sweat, lipstick and very little sheets. He closed the door, kept his word and said nothing.
