Miniskirt Space Pirates is a Fun Novel Series!
I finished reading all 12 volumes of Miniskirt Space Pirates! Took me about a year, but it was very much worth it. I've been a fan of the Mouretsu Pirates anime for a while, and the novels really didn't disappoint.
Key takeaways:
-Gruier Serenity, the space princess who shows up in the second major arc of the anime/second novel, is far and away the funniest and most fun part of the novels. Her introduction arc is a good dose of her wanting to dismantle a genetically engineered monarchy to which she belongs. But in later novels she will very blatantly use that position to get what she wants, which usually involves helping her friends, especially Marika.
--She also has the ability from years of political training to identify with high accuracy when someone is lying, which comes in mighty handy at various points in the series.
--In general, she's less interested in seizing power for herself and more in supporting Marika in her adventures. With the caveat that she sometimes gets to pick out what Marika wears.
-Text in the first novel, Marika’s first interaction with Chiaki pretty heavily hints that Marika is attracted to girls.

-Space elves called "Metheuselah" exist and live for very, very long periods of time. Well in excess of 200 years.
--One such space elf is Jenny Dolittle's history professor Athena, whose teaching style irritates Jenny enough to make her travel back home and kicks off a series of events that culminates in a stable time loop where the Yacht Club travels 110 years back in time and ends up persuading the Galactic Empire to intervene in their civil war. Part of that time loop involves Jenny telling Athena when she was a graduate student that she would make a good teacher.
-The author Sasamoto writes in his afterwards about actually being involved in an amateur rocketry group, and that experience is really reflected in the work, which puts a lot of emphasis on realistic engineering and space facts. The third novel's cosplay pirates arc is essentially the Yacht Club girls going through a space engineering boot camp and features mundanely hilarious things like them being unable to land a shuttle because they packed so much luggage they had to mount some of it to the shuttle's landing gear. And the ninth volume features a bit where Marika orders the crew to be ready for takeoff on short notice, but they've been given authorization to use a state-of-the-art docking bay, so everybody starts getting into a full-scale overhaul of their system.
--This is an article on one of the group's major rocket launches, one in 2019 that went over 100 kilometers into the atmosphere:
-One of the series' regular villains, Jackie Kelvin, is a no-goodnick with poor hygiene and no sense of organization who somehow keeps just out of reach of his pursuers and achieves his objectives in the sloppiest ways possible, notably stands out from the generally more grounded technical setting. He's kind of an anti-engineer and has a little bit of light novel protagonist in him. Every other major character in the series hates him.
--He uses the pseudonyms Jackie Fahrenheit and Jackie Celsius at various points in the series.

Maki kept catching glimpses of herself in mirrors and windows. No way anyone was going to top her Yor Forger as the Thorn Princess costume. And if they did…she tilted her head, pulled dulled, vicious looking spikes out of her hair, posed as if she were about to strike. Soon, Nico would be at her mercy.
Honoka had decided to host the Halloween party so Maki was headed to Homura. As she approached the family rooms, she spotted a “Welcome Aboard The Bentenmaru” banner..
“MAKI!” Honoka rushed out, dressed in the space pirate captain costume Maki recognized from watching Bodacious Space Pirates with Honoka, Rin, and Nico. Honoka flared out the skirt of her coat and tilted her hat back with her prop gun.
“You look amazing. But you’ll never believe Nico. C’mon. Even my mom got dressed up.”
Honoka’s mom was dressed in a similar outfit as Marika’s mother, but with black pants instead of a miniskirt, a much bigger gun propped near her as she placed a tray of Japanese pastries down. Yukhio and Alisa Ayase had also gone pirate, Yukhio, superhacker Lynn Lambretta in a green Yacht Club hoodie and Alisa, heiress Jenny Doolittle in a Hakuoh Space Academy uniform.
Umi was assisting with the distribution of food, Kotori at her side in another Revue Starlight outfit, Maki couldn’t identify. Dim lights, music playing, Rin and Hanayo were in the far corner, getting drinks,dressed as the two main characters from Kiki’s Delivery Service, Rin as Jiji completely covered by a cat costume and Hanayo bewigged with a huge bright red bow as Kiki leaned with her broom.
Maki heard Nico’s voice, turned back to the hallway. Honoka’s father, a Legendary Chef for the night, had his head inclined, listening to a smaller…man?!?!?!! Maki blinked, Nico’s voice was coming out of a scruffy dude in an immaculate black suit, a Shibu Ina apron over the ensemble, sunglasses low on his ?!?!? nose, shirt shifting to reveal a…shoulder tattoo. Then Nico saw Maki and winked.
Maki was down the hall before she could think of anything else, pulling down Nico’s shirt, gaping at the detailed dragon.
“Slow down, wildkitten.” Nico batted Maki’s hands down. “Parent.”
Honoka’s dad chuckled, moving on.
“Why aren’t you in pain? How did you? Who did you?”
A smirk. “You are so hot in that outfit, Maki.”
“Tattoo.” Maki pointed.
“Isn’t it great?” Nico flexed, the sunglasses not hiding the sparkle of insufferable smugness. “Hanayo did it. Temporary. Did you see their…”
Maki was already storming back to the party, across the room, knocking the drink out of Kiki’s hand, “You, you…what did you do to Nico? I thought we were friends.”
And there was Rin’s voice, and Rin’s rib crunching hug, “WE ARE BESTIES, MAKI-CHAN.”
“What the…” Maki shoved…Rin off of her.
Jiji removed his head revealing Hanayo’s crestfallen face, “What’s the matter, Maki?”
Maki stood back, staring at Rin. Her clothes were padded, her silhouette closer to her girlfriend’s, makeup and prosthetics altering the contours of her face, the wig changing her look, the red ribbon drawing most of the attention. It was truly clever. Maki expected Rin to choose the cat costume so she just assumed.
“Whose clothes are you taking off now?” Nico teased, hands reaching around Maki’s waist.
“Bueh!!!” Maki jumped.
“Is this the scary corner?” Honoka mixed in, plate of pastry handy. “Try these, they’re pumpkin flavored.”
“Ooh.” Rin grabbed for food, Maki pushed through, heading for the hall,ignoring Nico.
“I’m going home. Good night, Honoka, love your costume.”
“Maki?”
Confused Honoka, then Nico’s voice, “Nico’s got this.”
Maki heard running.
“Maki-chan! Wait for Nico.”
Maki stopped, leaning against a wall, holding back confused tears. Nico ducked under, ruby eyes glittering mischievously up at her girlfriend.
“Trick or treat.”
Maki sighed. “Treat please, Nico-chan.”
A soft touch on her cheek, Nico pushing up on tip toe into a not so soft kiss.
“Happy Halloween, Maki-chan.”
Now the party starts.

1. Hige X Blue (Wolf's Rain), sad-clown survivor redeemed by the love of a good woman, star-crossed werewolves who won't have paradise without each other.
2. Roy Mustang x Riza Hawkeye (Fullmetal Alchemist) another smiling but inwardly tormented heroic war criminal with a seriously devoted sniper to save him. Love playboy guy - serious girl pairings (Harry and Susan have some of this).
3. Oscar Francois de Jarjayes x Andre Grandiere (Rose of Versailles) Mary Antoinette's devoted transexual bodyguard and her lovelorn stableboy. So much passion, so much tragedy, we will not see their like again.

Akeginu Iga x Koushirou Chikuma (Basilisk) An earnest young genin ninja in love with a sweet and innocent ninja princess...and the voluptuous femme fatale ninja bodyguard of said princess, seeking a good man. Something like Oscar and Andre in their fatal conflicts of loyalty, with an even more tragic conclusion, but a very lovable couple of honourable murderers.
5. Triela X Hilshire (Gunslinger Girl) the cyborg warrior princess and her strait-laced handler, trapped into working for the Italian government death squad that rebuilt her after mutilation and torture by human traffickers. A bond of comradeship and love all the more perfect for its impossibility.
6. Miki Sayaka x Sakura Kyouko (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) Late entry on the yuri side, magical girls in love; the tragic knight and ragamuffin warrior princess with a heart of gold. Protect their smiles.

In these days of small-space living and Marie Kondos-inspired ‘decluttering’, there’s a rebellious joy to be found in collecting. An artfully displayed collection can be the most spectacular centrepiece in any home – the key is not so much what you collect, but how you choose to display it.
When it comes to collector’s homes, we can’t look past the truly remarkable South Melbourne abode of artist Greg Irvine – one of the most memorable spaces we’ve ever set foot in!
Greg’s many collections are displayed in tightly curated, orderly arrangements. Take these cues from Greg for successful collecting :
1. Collections should be themed at point of purchase.
If you can’t see a home for an item when shopping, don’t buy it.
2. A collection should be consistent.
Unrelated objects can look untidy and cluttered. A safe bet is to choose all one type of object, or all one colour/material.
3. Collections are to be seen, not archived.
There is no point in hiding your treasured pieces away; the enjoyment is in the viewing and admiration of each item, and recalling the stories they tell. As Greg says, ‘If you can’t display it, don’t own it!’
