Rosa's eyes fluttered open to the large room, silent and dim, the shades on her large windows drawn to keep the light out. Her mind was still foggy from a deep and restful sleep - the first real rest she'd gotten in days.
Heavy snoring from her right caught her attention. Lying on his side in his white tank and black pajama pants was Noah, arms curled around the pillows, mouth slightly open as he slept peacefully. His chest rose and fell rhythmically with each deep breath, lost in a world of dreams. Rosa smiled softly at the sight, his features smooth and relaxed. She was always amazed at his ability to sleep through anything, even his own snoring. Her gaze shifted downwards and she attempted to slowly stretch her aching limbs, only to find her feet were trapped under a heavy weight. As she pushed to free them, the long body of fur resting over her ankles stirred. Oli grunted and curled off her legs to lay in a ball next to her feet.
Rosa reached down to gently pat Oli's head, his eyes blinking open sleepily at her touch before closing again with a content sigh.
She stretched her arms overhead and arched her back, feeling her joints pop satisfyingly as she moved. Pushing up from the soft mattress, Rosa drew her knees to her chest and gazed down at the two hunters still sleeping soundly in her bed. Their presence brought a small smile to her face despite the lingering exhaustion in her bones. Just a few days ago, a sudden illness had hit Rosa hard, slamming into her body like a freight train. The sweats and vomiting had been nearly constant, along with a bone-deep ache that permeated every muscle.
Despite drowsy memories from lack of proper sleep and fever, Rosa recalled how Maria-Oli's wife and mistress- visited daily, bringing mixtures of herbs and remedies that seemed to take the edge off the symptoms. Oli was always with her, settling onto the bed with Noah as Rosa napped. She was endlessly grateful for the relief those tonics provided, as she knew she'd likely still be lost in a hazy maze of pain without them. But now, after a full night's rest tucked between her devoted hunters, Rosa could feel her strength returning. She sighed softly, content to watch her companions sleep.
A low buzz comes from the drawer just to her left and at first she is confused before leaning over to pull the drawer of the nightstand open, inside is her phone, she forgot it had been in there. Opening the device the battery was running dangerously low, on the screen a group text came through that sent chills down her spine. "South lab. 4/8. 2 hours after dusk." Chavez was leading another strike on the labs again, Rosa felt a lump build in her throat. The message indicated plans for an attack, likely by Chavez and his band of rebels, on one of the mysterious research labs that had recently been built in the southern part of the city. While the labs claimed to be conducting medical research, rumors swirled that they were actually engaged in unethical experimentation. Chavez aimed to expose their secrets and shut them down, but Rosa knew the truth - that powerful ancient magicians were behind the lab, and that Chavez had no idea what he was up against. As one of the few people aware of the magicians and their dangerous capabilities, she was torn. She wanted to warn Chavez– to tell him that his planned attack would be futile and likely disastrous, but she had no idea how to explain the unexplainable. Who would believe that ancient magic was real, much less behind the labs? Her only options seemed to be staying silent or trying to subtly convince Chavez to call off the attack. But could she live with herself if she let him and his people walk into certain doom? The message on her phone had brought not just chills but an awful, impossible choice. Should she speak up and risk being seen as crazy? Or hold her tongue and allow the attack to go forward, almost certainly ending in tragedy?
The bedroom door opened slowly as Maria’s dark hair and soft face peered through the opening. Seeing Rosa awake she smiled her pearly white smile before stepping in, her strides across the room like a fairy running through the forest. She was wearing a simple pair of light wash jeans and a turtleneck tank, a golden chain hung around the soft knit collar of her shirt matching her watch and earrings. The casual outfit accentuated Maria's natural beauty and graceful movements. Though simple, the clothes seemed to flow around her as she glided across the room. Her smile lit up the space, radiating warmth and compassion. Rosa tucked her feet crossing them in front of her to give Maria room to sit down on the edge of the bed.
"How are you feeling dear?" Maria asked, taking Rosa's hands gently in her own. Her voice was melodic and caring. Rosa could see the concern in Maria's deep brown eyes. At the foot of the bed, Oli stood up from his resting place, stretching his legs and raising his haunches in the air as his jaw opened wide, his tongue lolling out of his mouth as he yawned.
"Better, so much better," Rosa replied sincerely. Maria's visit was just what she needed to lift her spirits and make her feel cared for. Maria had a gift for brightening any space she entered. With her nurturing spirit and captivating grace, she brought light and comfort wherever she went.
Noah stirred from his slumber, his eyelids fluttering open as he slowly took in his surroundings. With a gentle movement, he slid closer to Rosa, his weary head settling into the warmth of her lap. Rosa's fingers caressed the soft strands of his hair, letting the brown locks flow between them like a silken caress. Noah relaxed into her touch, the tension in his body dissipating.
“Could you boys offer us ladies a little privacy?” Maria's voice carried a hint of amusement as she turned over her shoulder, her eyes twinkling at Oli. Noah bristled slightly at the intrusion on their quiet moment, but Rosa just laughed, her melodic voice like tinkling bells. A playful smile crossed Oli's lips as he rolled his eyes and leapt off the bed. In an instant, the four-legged furry creature transformed into a tall man with shaggy hair. He leaned over the bed, his lips brushing against Maria's in a tender kiss before striding towards the door. A quick glance over his shoulder caught Noah's protest, but Oli ignored it with a mischievous grin. As Oli disappeared through the doorway, Noah settled back into Rosa's lap, comforted by the familiarity of her touch. Whatever adventures awaited them that day, he knew that with Rosa and now Maria too, he was exactly where he needed to be.
As the man's face leaned into her lap, growling defiance, vibrations coursed up her legs, igniting a familiar heat between her thighs. Days had passed since she had indulged in her desires with Jolly and Noah, and her body yearned for their touch once more. Yet, with a mix of resistance and longing, she lifted Noah's head, gently pushing him away. His eyes held a flicker of sadness at her apparent rejection. She understood his disappointment, feeling it herself, but knew this was not the right time or place. Though her body ached for more, she needed to exercise restraint. With a tender gesture, she reached out a hand, cupping his cheek and caressing the bones with her thumb.
“Just for a little while,” she whispered, her voice soothing.
"They always have been," Maria smiled, reaching into her back pocket. She pulled out a needle, hub, and a few gray iridescent top tubes. "I need a few samples from you, just to be sure the infection is gone."
Rosa nodded, extending her bare arm and turning her palm upwards for Maria to work. As Maria cleaned her skin and prepped her for the blood draw, Rosa started to talk to distract herself.
"How long have they been....around?" Rosa winced as the needle pierced her skin, the alcohol stinging as it absorbed into her bloodstream. She turned her gaze back to Maria as she carefully collected blood samples.
"Centuries, I think, the celestials created them in Egypt around the B.C. era," Maria said, her brows furrowed as she drew the blood, her voice unphased by the historical information.
"Egypt?" she asked curiously.
"Oh yes," Maria replied. "Our kind dates back a long time, to before the Magistrate ruled us. Legend says the Celestials created the hunters by entering the dimensional plane and fusing the essence of wild desert dogs with humans."
“So is that why hunters are so protective?” she inquired.
Maria's explanation revealed the deep, mystical bond between Celestials and their hunter companions that stretched back centuries. In ancient times, Celestials were otherworldly rulers who commanded great magic and power. From their lofty thrones, these ethereal monarchs desired loyal protectors - fierce warriors imbued with preternatural gifts that would fight and serve at their side. Thus, in the swirling sands of Ancient Egypt, an ingenious solution was found. The Celestials drew upon the arcane forces of the netherworld, combining select humans with rugged desert dogs to create an entirely new being: the hunter. These hunters exhibited the intelligence and loyalty of humans along with the strength, senses, and instincts of canines. Bound to the Celestials through an unbreakable metaphysical link, they became the perfect guardians. For centuries, the Celestials and their hunters lived in harmony. But over time, things began to change. The monarchs grew corrupt, drunk on power and magic. In 18th century England, the oppressed people could take no more and revolted. Led by the righteous magistrate, they overthrew the cruel Celestial rulers at last. With the monarchs defeated, their magic faded away, leaving the hunters as the last legacy of that ancient era. Though no longer ruled by Celestials, the hunters' devotion and kinship remained, continuing to the present day.
"What about the collars and..." She gestured to the lower half of her face.
"The muzzles?" Maria laughed as she pulled the needle from Rosa's arm, capped it for safety, and set the instruments down. "The collars originated with the Celestials. It was a bonding ritual where the hunters would take blood from their Master or Mistress to strengthen their bond. But the Magistrate said it's an outdated practice no longer needed." She settled into the bed resting on her hand as she leaned back casually picking at the invisible lint on the duvet.
"And the muzzles were introduced a few centuries ago by Magistrate Orion to increase compliance after a minor hunter uprising against cruel mages.” Rosa’s expression fell and she let out a gasp of surprise, Maria smiled taking her forearm and giving it a squeeze. “Don't worry - Jolly and I are kinder to our hunters than some. Noah and Oli are devoted, so long as we are all family you have nothing to fear."
Tumblr media
Jolly pressed the 'Stop' button on the Tahoe, the engine falling silent in the vast emptiness of the parking garage. The abrupt lack of noise seemed to echo off the concrete pillars and low ceiling as Maria swung open the passenger door, the sharp clack of her heels marking each step as she exited onto the cold cement floor. Slinging a large black bag over her shoulder, Maria waited impatiently for Jolly to join her so they could make their way to the entrance of the south lab. Though he moved with purpose, Jolly's footsteps were muffled, his expensive Italian leather shoes making not a sound. As they approached the thick metal doors, Maria turned to Jolly, her face etched with concern. "Are you sure you're ready for this?" she asked, digging through her cavernous bag to locate the two vials of Rosa's blood she had been entrusted with that morning. "I thought your family was big on blood supremacy. Don't you have some arranged marriage waiting for you back home?"
Jolly rolled his eyes as his best friend teased him about his family's tradition of arranged marriages between high ranking mages. Though it was expected that Jolly would one day marry another mage from an esteemed magical bloodline to keep the generations of power strong, he had never put much thought into it himself. Marriage seemed a distant concept, not something the carefree young mage had concerned himself with. He was content with his studies and adventures with friends, no interest in settling down yet.
“A blood test does not make or break how I see her. Rosa is still part of mine and Noah’s life, regardless of her status.” The two rode in the elevator to the fifth floor, following the sterile and bright winding corridors till they reached Reader’s office. Mark was sitting on his stool bent over a microscope with his white lab coat on, humming to himself as he adjusted the dials looking at whatever specimen was in front of him.
“Mark, darling, can we bother you?" Maria smiled as she set her bag down on Mark's meticulously organized work station, disrupting the precise layout he had carefully curated. Mark's eyes caught sight of the bag infringing on his space, and Jolly saw him chew on his lip as he struggled to maintain composure, his attention going back to his work.
"Being you called me this morning and asked to come by around 3 pm and it is now," he glanced at the watch on his left wrist, "2:58, I'd say it's not exactly a bother." He smiled at his own sarcasm as he slid away from his microscope to look both of them better in the eyes. "You did say it was interesting, what can I help you with?"
“It’s off the books my friend, and I need the results now.” Mark's eyes lit up with excitement as Jolly handed him the two vials of coagulated blood. Though technically against protocol, the prospect of examining mysterious new samples thrilled him. As a microbiologist working for a private research firm, Mark relished these "off the books" opportunities to explore the unknown.
With childlike eagerness, Mark spun around in his chair, the wheels squeaking against the polished linoleum floor. He grabbed a pair of powder blue latex gloves from the box hanging on the wall and snapped them on with a satisfying pop. Mark's workspace was meticulously organized, with tiny beakers, large droppers, microscope slides, and various chemical solutions all lined up and labeled. He quickly gathered the tools he would need, his focused gaze carefully selecting each item.
Under the harsh fluorescent lights of the lab, Mark's eyes narrowed in concentration behind his glasses as he began to examine the samples Jolly had brought him. He worked steadily and methodically, yet with an enthusiasm reserved for life's true passions. Mark added droplets of different reagents to the blood, watching intently for any reactions. He slid sample after sample under his microscope lens, adjusting the focus to reveal a hidden microscopic world. His curiosity was insatiable, driving him to probe deeper and deeper into the unknown properties of the specimens before him. Though the work was tedious, Mark was energized, feeling truly alive while caught up in the thrall of scientific discovery.
As Jolly and Maria waited with bated breath, they watched Mark's reactions closely with each new slide he placed under the microscope. A crease between his eyebrows grew deeper and more pronounced each time he peered into the eyepiece. Mark leaned back in his seat, humming thoughtfully to himself before going to a cabinet and digging deep into the back for another solution. With meticulous care, he prepared another sample on a fresh glass slide.
"Well, this IS interesting," he mused, eyebrows raised in surprise.
"What is it?" Jolly asked eagerly, leaning forward in anticipation.
Mark simply moved aside, leaving the scope open for Jolly to take a look himself. But before he could, Maria pushed past him impatiently to see for herself first. She swept her long hair back from her eyes as she peered down the lens of the microscope intently. A small gasp escaped her lips at the sight that met her eyes.
"It can't be," she breathed in disbelief, hands trembling slightly.
"But it is," Mark assured them gravely, a knowing glint in his eye. The two exchanged an awed look, scarcely believing the unexpected discovery Mark had made under the microscope.

Deranged man in a dress disrupts a conference about human trafficking and forced prostitution demanding his right to buy sex is respected.
A conference on tackling human trafficking and migrant smuggling was interrupted when a transgender politician became enraged at a speaker suggesting that the sex trade should be abolished, calling it “hate speech.”
The second day of the 7th Congreso Latinoamericano y Caribeño sobre Trata de Personas y Tráfico de Migrantes (Latinamerican and Carribean Congress on Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling) was held in Mexico City on Wednesday, The annual Congress features speakers and politicians from Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies gathering to discuss ways in which to eradicate human trafficking. Wednesday’s panel featured a lecture by Spanish Sociologist Dr. Rosa María Cobo, a professor at the University of La Coruña.
Dr. Cobo gave a radical feminist perspective on human trafficking, and called for the abolition of the sex trade which she noted relied upon the exploitation of women and girls with few economic and social resources.
“Prostitution is not right, from an ethical and political point of view,” Dr. Cobo said, “It is not acceptable for a woman to become an [object] and it is not acceptable for a man to objectify and [commit] violence against women who have very few resources and who are vulnerable.”
At the end of her talk, Dr. Cobo was presented with a gift from Cecilia Márquez Alkadef, a member of Mexcio’s Chamber of Deputies, which is one of the key organizers of the annual Congress.
Just as Dr. Cobo was posing for photographs, a male voice could be heard furiously screaming through the auditorium.
On the event’s official livestream, the camera panned out to show an individual getting increasingly aggressive, yelling towards the stage before standing to yell out into the audience. The event’s host attempts to calm the individual down and request they respect the perspective that was presented by Dr. Cobo, but the man only became more enraged.
“This is hate speech! This is criminalizing my comrades! This is hate speech paid for with Government funds!”
The man was quickly identified as Maria Clemente, a trans-identified politician who was elected last year and became the first transgender person to enter Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies.
A member of the audience began to speak out against Clemente, yelling back in a sarcastic fashion, “Women were born to be whores?” To which Clemente responds, “Well I am a woman, and I am a whore!  It’s my job and and how my family eats! I love it!”
In another angle of the same altercation, Clemente can be heard chanting: “Sex work is work! Sex work is work!” Clemente also lashes out against one of the Congress officials attempting to calm him down when he is called ‘Sir,’ and begins to aggressively approach the podium yelling: “Maria! Maria! My name is Maria!”
Following Clemente’s outbursts, the Congress went to a recess. According to La Razon de Mexico, Clemente left and several other attendees withdrew. The Congress is holding its final meeting today.
A few clips of Clemente’s outburst taken by an audience member began circulating on social media on Thursday, with many Mexican feminists expressing outrage at his furious defense of prostitution, and derailing of a conference on human trafficking.
“I am not a psychologist but these people urgently need mental help. They’re not [okay], really. We see the same scenes. Hate, rage, violence, aggressiveness and a huge pathological ego. They kick like small children in adult bodies. It is not normal.” One commenter wrote in Spanish beneath one of the videos of the incident posted by Women’s Declaration International’s Mexico branch.
“How strange that [a trans-identified male] always has to be the center of attention in feminist spaces and even more so in a room full of female victims. And they have the nerve to say that they are disrespecting him, what was he doing in a congress on trafficking in the first place?” Another asked.
Tumblr media
Many offered praise for Sonia Sanchez, the abolitionist who had engaged Clemente from the audience and defended women’s right to be free from sexual exploitation.
Sex-based violence against women in Mexico is considered to be among the highest in the world, with the country’s femicide rate continuing to rise even as the general homicide rate falls. 85% of human trafficking victims in the country are female, with women and girls overrepresented in every form of the crime, including organ trafficking, forced prostitution, and labor exploitation.
The lack of justice for female victims of sex-based violence have led to widespread unrest in Mexico, especially amongst the organized feminist activist community who have staged regular protests this year. In March, thousands of women marched the streets of Mexico City demanding greater protection from law enforcement and the Government.
UPDATE July 8/22: A spokeswoman associated withWDI Mexico responded to Reduxx‘s request for comment, and, in a Spanish-language statement, called Clemente’s behavior “an embarrassment.”
“Although this behavior leaves much to be desired, for [feminists] it is an opportunity to show the world the truth about transgenderism,” representative Laura Lecuona says, “These are not simply a few men on the margins of society fighting for their right to housing and work.”
Lecuona says this is not the first time Clemente has been recorded as having an explosive emotional outburst. In December of 2021, Clemente allegedly attacked Congressional cafeteria staff after they used the wrong pronouns for him.
“[Clemente] was the reason Deputy Gabriel Quadri was reprimanded by the National Electoral Institute for alleged expressions of ‘discrimination and transphobia,'” Lecuona explained, noting that the precedent of Quadri’s penalization had feminists worried as it acted as a warning against expressing any critical sentiment.
“Not all gender identity activists make such a fuss. Others are more subtle in their ways, but most of those who are influencers and have a certain platform, whether in traditional media or on social networks, are hostile to radical feminists and to anyone who does not agree with them.”
Women’s Declaration International is a statement which affirms the rights of women and girls based on sex, and denounces the impact gender ideology has had on women’s rights. It currently has over 32,000 signatories from 159 countries.

Sub Rosa 🥀
The Latin term sub rosa meaning "under the rose" is a phrase referring to the secrecy or confidentiality of something. It originates from Greek and Roman mythology where Cupid gave a rose to Harpocrates, the god of silence, in order for him to keep quiet about the secrets of Aphrodite.
The characters featured here are Maria Romanova, based on the actual historical Maria Nikolaevna, daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, and my oc Serhiy Makovsky, both are characters in my work in progress story The Revolutionary :D

Influential Black Women in History Framed Portraits
Black History Month Special. Set of framed portraits featuring just a handful of amazing influential Black women throughout history.
I was inspired to make this after watching The Watcher’s Puppet History episode on Bessie Coleman. Watch it for yourself here.  I was both angry and sad that I had never heard of this woman at all - ever. So I decided to make this portrait set featuring Black women who did extraordinary things that I don’t think the majority of people have ever heard of. This is why I didn’t include more well-known figures such as Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, or Michelle Obama - everybody knows who they are and I wanted to broadened everyone’s knowledge just as mine was when I did my research. The only woman here that I knew of was Marsha P. Johnson.
Here’s a list of the women in these portraits: Phillis Wheatley (1753 - 1784) Fannie Barrier Williams (1855 - 1944) Maria 'Molly' Baldwin (1856 - 1922) Lillian Parker Thomas (1866 - 1917) Madam C.J. Walker (1867 - 1919) Mary McLeod Bethune (1875 - 1955) Nannie Helen Burroughs (1879 - 1961) Lyda D. Newman (about 1885 - unknown) Bessie Coleman (1892-1926) Daisy Bates (1914 - 1999) Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915 - 1973) Katherine Johnson (1918 - 2020) Shirley Chisholm (1924 - 2005) Audre Lorde (1934 - 1992) Claudette Colvin (1939 - present) Angela Davis (1944 - present) Marsha P. Johnson (1945 - 1992) Mae Jemison (1956 - present)

Phillis Wheatley (1753 - 1784) Taken from her native Gambia, she was brought to Boston in the mid-18th century and enslaved to the family of John Wheatley as a domestic. Aware of her intelligence, the Wheatley's taught her how to read and write. She eventually became a well-known poet in both New England and England, with her work "An Elegiac Poem, on the Death of that Celebrated Divine, and Eminent Servant of Jesus Christ, the Reverend and Learned George Whitefield," celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic. (Chicago Tribune)
Fannie Barrier Williams (1855 - 1944) She was an influential educator and activist who was a staunch advocate for freed slaves in the South. She spoke at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, expressing her concern over the lack of Blacks on the Board of Control for that cultural event. She helped found organizations such as the National League of Colored Women, the National Association of Colored Women, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She also supported women's suffrage and in 1907, was the only African-American chosen to eulogize Susan B. Anthony at the 1907 National American Women Suffrage Association convention. (Chicago Tribune)
Maria 'Molly' Baldwin (1856 - 1922) She was a teacher and civic leader in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She became master of the Agassiz School, a public school for middle-class white children, in 1916. She was one of only two women masters in Cambridge schools and the only African-American in New England with that distinction. During Baldwin's tenure, the Agassiz School was considered one of the best in Cambridge. The 12 teachers who served under her were all white. (Chicago Tribune)
Lillian Parker Thomas (1866 - 1917) She gained a reputation as an effective collaborator and organizer while working as a journalist for the Indianapolis News, where she was the first African-American to write a regular column. Thomas used her contacts and influence at the newspaper to further the cause of racial equality. She was also involved in the founding of the Woman's Improvement Club, which helped African-Americans get health care. (Chicago Tribune)
Madam C.J. Walker (1867 - 1919) Before Mary Kay, there was Madam C.J. Walker. Walker is widely regarded as one of the first ever self-made American female millionaires. She created hair-care solutions and remedies with Black women in mind and sold them door-to-door. She eventually created a brand people recognized, widely manufactured her products, and hired 40,000 ambassadors since the company's inception to help her sell her products. (Teen Vogue)
Mary McLeod Bethune (1875 - 1955) After struggling to go to school and working on a plantation to help support her family, she became an educator and, in 1904, founded the Daytona Educational and Industrial Institute for Girls. Her educational activism and leadership set her up to be a political activist. She went on to found the National Council of Negro Women, and worked in Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration, where she served as the informal "race leader at large." (Teen Vogue)
Nannie Helen Burroughs (1879 - 1961) Born to former slaves in Virginia, she was a leading educator, feminist, and suffragist in the Washington, D.C., area. After she was rebuffed for a teaching job in the Washington, D.C., school system, Burroughs founded a school for girls and women, the National Training School for Women and Girls, in 1909. She served as the school's president until her death in 1961. (Chicago Tribune)
Lyda D. Newman (about 1885 - unknown) She gravitated toward a career involving the hair-care industry. Newman got a patent for her invention, the first synthetic hairbrush, in 1898. Her innovation allowed for easier access to the bristles in order to clean out the brush. In addition, she introduced synthetic bristles. Before her invention, brushes used animal hair, such as a boar’s. Her invention made brushing long locks a more hygienic process. (Teen Vogue)
Bessie Coleman (1892 - 1926) She was the first African-American woman and first Native American to hold a pilot license and was the first Black person to earn an international pilot's license. She then became a high-profile pilot doing notoriously dangerous air shows in the United States. She was popularly known as “Queen Bess” and “Brave Bessie”, and hoped to start a school for African-American fliers. Her pioneering role was an inspiration to early pilots and to the African-American and Native American communities. (Wikipedia)
Daisy Bates (1914 - 1999) She an American civil rights activist, publisher, journalist, and lecturer who played a leading role in the Little Rock Integration Crisis of 1957. As the leader of the NAACP branch in Arkansas, Bates guided and advised the nine students, known as the Little Rock Nine, when they attempted to enroll in 1957 at Little Rock Central High School, a previously all-white institution. (PBS)
Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915 - 1973) She is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Her flamboyance, skill, and showmanship on the newly electrified guitar played a vital role in the conception of Rock & Roll as a genre of music. She gained popularity in the 1930s and 1940s with her gospel recordings, characterized by a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics and electric guitar. She was the first great recording star of gospel music, and was among the first gospel musicians to appeal to rhythm and blues and rock and roll audiences, later being referred to as "the original soul sister" and "the Godmother of rock and roll". She influenced early rock-and-roll musicians including Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Eric Clapton. Tharpe was a pioneer in her guitar technique; she was among the first popular recording artists to use heavy distortion on her electric guitar, presaging the rise of electric blues. Her guitar-playing technique had a profound influence on the development of British blues in the 1960s. (PBS)
Katherine Johnson (1918 - 2020) She was profiled in the film “Hidden Figures” as a NASA mathematician whose trajectory calculations helped astronaut Alan Shepard become the first American in space. Her skills were crucial in calculating orbital equations that led to the success of astronaut John Glenn’s Friendship 7 mission in which he orbited the Earth successfully. Johnson also was a pathfinder in her native West Virginia, where she was among the first African-Americans to integrate West Virginia University. (Chicago Tribune)
Shirley Chisholm (1924 - 2005) She made history by being the first Black woman elected to Congress in 1968. She served as a representative from New York for 14 years, advocating for early education and child welfare policies. She eventually ran for president as a Democrat in the 1972 race, becoming the first Black candidate to run for a major party nomination. Chisholm's infamous campaign slogan was “unbought and unbossed." She was also one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus in 1971, as well as the Congressional Women's Caucus in 1977. (Teen Vogue)
Audre Lorde (1934 - 1992) This lesbian, Black, female poet’s 1973 collection, “From a Land Where Other People Live”, was nominated for a National Book Award and increased America’s awareness of intersectionality of race, gender, and class that can put particular groups at a disadvantage or lead to discrimination. Lorde’s identity shaped her speeches and writings about the struggles of women, Black people, and the LGBTQ community. (Teen Vogue)
Claudette Colvin (1939 - present) Though we've all heard the story of Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat on the bus in Montgomery, Alabama, most of us don't know that Colvin did the same thing — nine months before Parks did. She was only 15 at the time, and was one of the first Black activists to openly challenge the law. (Teen Vogue)
Angela Davis (1944 - present) She was a major activist in the late 1960s and early '70s. Profoundly affected by her childhood in the segregated city of Birmingham, Alabama, she joined the Communist Party and became an affiliate of the Black Panthers as a young woman, and ran as the Communist vice-presidential candidate in 1980 and 1984. She was arrested, tried, and acquitted for her role in a Black Panther courtroom shootout. She went on to have a distinguished academic career at institutions including Pomona College, Rutgers, and Vassar, and has remained politically active. (Chicago Tribune)
Marsha P. Johnson (1945 - 1992) She was a Black transgender woman and activist most known for her involvement with the Stonewall Inn riots — a 1969 uprising against police brutality by New York City's LGBTQ community. Johnson went on to become a prominent voice in the fight for LGBTQ equality and was an activist during the 1980s AIDS epidemic. (Teen Vogue)
Mae Jemison (1956 - present) She was the first Black woman admitted to the astronaut training program, in 1987. In 1992, she became the first Black woman to fly to space on the space shuttle Endeavour. (Teen Vogue)

A playlist - 穩定的魅力 The enchantment of stability
“你身上的某些東西讓我平靜。 對我而言你一直有份力量—— 一部分的你是種安撫,另一部分則使我害怕。 我怎麼會厭煩呢? 我永遠不會對此感到厭煩。
Something in you pacifies me. You’ve always had that power over me – part of you pacifies, another terrifies. How do I get sick of that? I will never get sick of that.”
─ Henry Miller, from a letter to Anaïs Nin featured in A Literate Passion: Letters Of Anaïs Nin & Henry Miller (1932 - 1953)
We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect."
– Anais Nin 阿內絲尼恩
and Part of her life in HENRY AND JUNE Trailer Video via Youtube/EthanPopov

I am sad that all of the parents in this show just vanished or were never seen, Arturo doesn’t feature nearly as much as he used to and Helena we haven’t seen since the end of season 2, Ann Evans we haven’t seen since I think early season 2 and we never even met Max and Isobel’s adopted dad like we got zero family scenes between them, Michelle Valenti we haven’t seen since I think very early on in season 3, we never even met Alex’s mum and then Maria they killed Mimi off 30 seconds into her first appearance since the end of season 2 I think there was so much untapped potential we could of gotten with the parents in this show I mean they also completely wasted making Jones Michael’s father also also is Arturo ever going to learn the truth about how Rosa actually came back I have also been waiting for that

SIZE MATTERS. SCALE IN PHOTOGRAPHY. Kunstpalast, Berlin Group Show. 31st Jan 2024.
"Everything changes in an image when the zoom slider is adjusted: certain things are highlighted, detached from their context, exaggerated or reinterpreted. They move closer to us, allowing us to study them, or blur before our eyes"
Tumblr media
The scale of a pictorial subject or image format harbours great creative possibilities – but also the potential for manipulation. For the first time, an exhibition comprehensively examines the considerable yet often subtle shifts in meaning that accompany changes in size in photography. Works from the late nineteenth century to the present day raise questions about how scale affects our perception and handling of photographic images.
Photography can change its dimensions more easily than any other medium; pictures can be effortlessly blown up into large images on museum walls and billboards, or shrunk down to a thumbnail on a mobile phone screen. While photography traditionally reproduces the world in miniature, it can also present things in a life-size or even larger-than-life-size format and render the invisible visible.
“While painters have to determine the size of their canvas before applying the first brushstroke, photography is a medium without fixed measurements at the moment of its creation when the shutter is released. It is only afterwards that a decision is made about whether an image will materialise and, if so, in what dimensions,” explains Felix Krämer, general director of the Kunstpalast. “A defining and unique feature of photography is that size is a mutable quality, which is something we want to highlight with this exhibition.”
