Would Cinder's life have been different if she had met Ozpin instead of Salem?

Hello!

I mean, her story would be different for sure because in-series it is strongly intertwined with Salem's. However, I am not sure Ozpin is the perfect fit to help Cinder tbh, if this is what you are asking.

Midnight is at the root of who Cinder is, to the point her current storyline is just its repetition. This means it is Rhodes and not Salem, who made Cinder who she is. Salem simply chooses Cinder as her pawn because she sees her as perfect for her plans. An angry girl thirsty for power and with a self so frail it is very easy to manipulate. Now, obviously we don't know what exactly happened after Midnight, but we really do not need to. The implication is that Cinder did what Rhodes told her to do. She started running and living as a criminal until, at a certain point in time, she met Salem, who promised her the Maiden powers.

Now, what would have happened if she had met Ozpin instead?

There are 2 possible outcomes...

Cinder refuses to fight for him and simply runs away. She has been let down by a Huntsman and told she would never be one, so why should she now help Ozpin in whatever he wants to do? What can he even offer her? After Rhodes's betrayal, Cinder fixates on power and Ozpin is not the kind of person who promises it (even if sometimes he grants it to certain people). Moreover, I am not really sure Ozpin himself would be interested in Cinder. Ozpin is shown to recruit young people among the Huntsmen and Huntresses in training. This is one of the reasons why the schools exist in the first place. Thanks to them, Oz can choose among people, who are talented and who want to be heroes/do good. You may say the Branwens twins are an exception, but they still went to school at Beacon, Qrow definately wanted to be a hero and Raven was mostly motivated by her bonds.

Cinder accepts to work for Ozpin because something resonates with her and her original dream to be a Huntress is given new life. The moment she discovers the truth (Salem is immortal and Ozpin did not tell), her reaction would most likely be a mix between Qrow and Raven's. She would feel betrayed once more by a Huntsman and become extremely pissed as a result (Qrow). The most likely outcome is that she would escape society and go back to criminality (Raven). Obvsiously, a lot of variables here are possible because in the end it would not be just about Ozpin. Would Cinder form new bonds while working for Ozpin? if she did they may lead to a more positive outcome, but all in all Ozpin is not really the most indicated person to help her imo.

And these are my 2 cents. Imo, unless in this AU Cinder meets other people and forges meaningful relationships with them, the end result would not be that much different. Ozpin would most likely break her trust, just like Rhodes did and this would make Cinder spiral. I mean, even in canon Salem specifically uses Ozpin's hypocrisy and secrets to feed Cinder's resentment:

Cinder to Ozpin: "She was right about you… Such arrogance…"

In Cinder's eyes, Ozpin has built the system that has trapped and tortured Cinder. it is no surprise he is not exactly one of Cinder's favourite people.

I know the day is almost over but I wanted to get on here and tell my mutual from across all my favorite fandoms how much each and everyone of you mean to me.

currently reading. im reading through the webnovel The Job of an Imperial Concubine by Yue Xia Die Ying (translated via Sleepchaser's Cot on Word Press) and planning on reading research article Il Costume Popolare di Aviano by Luigi Ciceri (1975). i also recently-ish finished the series Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation by MXTX , the sevenseas official translation.

current obsession. historical fashion and hairstyling have been a huge passion of mine for some years at this point and im planning on getting into historical reconstruction and reenactment in the future.

but honestly i guess i've been feeling too overwhelmed by real life stuff recently to muster up the energy to get super super into anything :/

I may have noticed a lot of probably unintentional panels in vol 8 between Pietro & Penny and Ozpin & Oscar, i wonder what you think?

Thank you for your ask and sorry for the wait!

In general, I have not written much about Oscar (as I haven't about Ruby) because I am waiting for his arc to enter its climax. Hopefully, the next couple of volumes will help in this.

Anyway, I saw you already found some of them, but here are some metas on Oscar.

As for Ozpin and Oscar, theirs is clearly meant to be read as a mentor/mentee and father/son dynamic imo. Oscar's goal is to become himself, so to self-actualize and Ozpin's presence in his soul is at the root of its conflict. Obviously, it is not Ozpin's fault, but symbolically, it is as if he is assimilating Oscar hence negating him to truly become himself. In the end, obviously it won't happen and Oscar will be able to affirm himself as more than just Ozpin. At the same time, Ozpin will keep being an important part of who he is, just like parents are so for their children no matter what. You can actually see how this process has already started tbh. Back in the Mistral arc Ozpin was dominant and in charge and Oscar could only tag along. However, when he appears again in Atlas, Oscar is the one leading them and their relationship is much more balanced. This is also symbolically Ozpin learning to trust again through Oscar and healing himself. Plot-wise, I think Ozpin will disappear in the end and Oscar will be free of the curse.

As for Oscar and Penny, the panels you noticed were definately not coincidences! These 2 are important foils to the point that in the Atlas arc their story-arcs before the climax clearly parallel each other. It starts with the climax of volume 7, when both awaken a power not completely theirs and receive help from an adult (magic + maiden power). They do so after facing off the arc's 2 main antagonists thematically (Cinder and Ironwood). Then in volume 8 they are both kidnapped by an enemy and get separated from their allies. They are both objectified by their enemies too and demand their authority figures to trust them.

I have still to properly explore this foiling tbh. Part of it has to do with the theme of trust, but I feel I am still missing something. At the same time, it might have to do to their complementary roles in Ruby's arc, as well. In this case, next volume will be helpful. Finally, it is possible that in the long run Penny's arc will comment Oscar's.

Oh, and before anyone asks, relationship goals is marked for their portrayal in 03, where they feel more like a couple/act like husband and wife.

Exact opposite of relationship goals is marked for some of the problematic shit from Brotherhood I've ranted about before on my blog.

Don't get me wrong, I love Royai (in general) to death, but even I find some of the scenes Arakawa wrote for these two questionable (out of context). And I just put Animal House of my list of favorite movies, so you can imagine how low my standards are.

I’ve been wanting to figure out a way to tell you all once again how much you all mean to me. I know I did it back in November but I wanted to do it again and more than just with mere words. And recently I found a way.

Recently I’ve been watching the show Hilda on Netflix and fell in love with these creatures called Woff’s and while doing so I made (or attempted) these fluffy guys for you guys to let you all know again how much you mean to me.
