Kenny Rogers - Abraham, Martin and John
Post War American Political Songs
Didn't you love the things that they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?
And we'll be free
Dion DiMucci's song has been sung and recorded by many. It's worth reflecting that all of them have known that there are many people who'll answer "No" to the questions the song poses. Knowing that it's not always popular to answer "Yes" they do anyway.

MLK Day
On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we take a moment to reflect on the individuals who have fought for and continue to advocate for civil rights and present two letterpress broadsides printed by Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design students in 2010.
The collection is entitled Everyday Prophets and explores quotes by notable Black activists and artists; Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, James Baldwin, and Bob Marley. The first broadside printed by Patrick Sharrow examines the ideological tensions between contemporaries Malcolm X and MLK who both sought racial justice but proposed very different routes to get there. Andrea Bartley’s broadside takes a more philosophical perspective featuring quotes from all four visionaries. Bartley’s text is printed over (a hard to digitally capture) embossing of ‘LOVE’.

It's fitting that we should gather here, for it was here that Martin Luther King inspired the entire nation and the world with his stirring words, his great vision both challenging and inspiring us with his great dream. People have asked, 'Why Stevie Wonder, as an artist?' Why should I be involved in this great cause? I'm Stevie Wonder the artist, yes, but I'm Steveland Morris, a man, a citizen of this country, and a human being. As an artist, my purpose is to communicate the message that can better improve the lives of all of us. I'd like to ask all of you just for one moment, if you will, to be silent and just to think and hear in your mind the voice of our Dr Martin Luther King …

In an extract from his memoir written before he died last year, Gil Scott-Heron talks about when he toured with Stevie Wonder to establish Martin Luther King Day as a national holiday in the US

Should Martin Luther King’s birthday be a national holiday? If you ask those who say that it should be, they would probably say something like this. “King was the most important figure in the civil rights movement, and his great speech ‘I Have a Dream,’ delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington in 1963, is the finest expression of the ideal of racial equality. Tragically, he was assassinated in 1968. Making his birthday a holiday shows our commitment to the sort of society he favored.” I would argue that, on the contrary, these very … Continue reading →
