The Dashwood Family Album: Volume XXIV
Tumblr media
With expectant dad Robert having the sprawling family home to himself (apart from Lulu of course), and his sister Clara and brother-in-law Daniel rapidly running out of room for their offspring in their current residence, it only makes sense for Clara and family to move in.
Tumblr media
Lulu is especially happy to have George as a live-in playmate.
Tumblr media
Uncle Robert helps Matilda to decide what she'd like for lunch.
Tumblr media
Hmm, he's feeling a bit odd this afternoon though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With nephew and niece John and Alice to cheer him on, he gives birth to his daughter, Helena. She has her grandfather George Wickham's green eyes (and a weirdly alien-looking nose?).
Tumblr media
John and Alice are delighted to welcome their new cousin to the family.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Clara and Daniel have been rather distracted by Matilda's birthday.

9 Fandom Peeps to Get to Know Better:
Thanks for the tag, @eirenical!
3 Ships You Like: Only 3?! Decisions decisions! Well, Feihua (and difanghua) have to be included, obviously, and I guess Wangxian should be there, too. I can’t decide who to list for the 3rd spot, so here are the main contenders: Horatio Hornblower/Archie Kennedy (and also with William Bush), Hualian, and Weilan.
First Ship Ever: I was weirdly late to shipping, or at least contemporary pop culture shipping? I was pretty invested in Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy and also Elinor Dashwood and Edward Ferrars in middle school, but it didn’t really devour my brain the way ships do now. Honestly, I think it was Horatio Hornblower and Archie Kennedy back in college, although it took some friends explaining to me why they read it as romantic (laughing and smh at past!me), and a rewatch of the entire series wearing my new shipping goggles for me to go “OH!” like they do in fic, lol. I didn’t get into fic until much later (thanks, @bifilthatonthatseson!)
Last Song You Heard: Heather Dale’s “The Hunter” has been playing on loop in my head since I woke up this morning, but I just put on The Amazing Devil’s “Inkpot Gods,” so I guess I’ll list both. :D
Favourite Childhood Book: I passionately loved the Ramona Quimby books when I was little, but I don’t really remember anything about them anymore, and Matilda was probably the other most important kid’s book for me growing up. (It all felt very relatable to young me, and I kept waiting for my powers to come in. Pity it doesn’t work like that!) If YA books read in adulthood count, I’d have to say the Song of the Lioness series; I read it in grad school (thanks for this, too, @bifilthatonthatseson) and it rewired my brain in INCREDIBLY important ways.
Currently Reading: I’m in between books right now, but I most recently finished Freya Marske’s A Power Unbound (volume 3 of the “Last Binding” Trilogy) and it was INCREDIBLE. Next up is Xiran Jay Zhao’s Iron Widow, which I’m very excited about.
Currently watching: I’m in the middle of The Lost Tomb 2; I temporarily petered out because it’s been awhile since Wu Xie and Xiaoge were in the same scene and I am very much watching it for them (and Xiaohua, who also hasn’t been on screen in awhile), but I’m going to go back to it soon. Other than that, I’m rewatching “I am Nobody” with @sufficientlylargen, “The Untamed” with @sufficientlylargen, @loryer496 and another non-Tumblr friend, “Destined” with @fionatlux and a different non-Tumblr friend, and watching “Luoyang” for the first time with the latter non-Tumblr friend. :D
Currently consuming: Nothing atm, but I’m about to make some of the lavender tea that @slangerogkatter recommended! It’s very good!
Currently craving: Bubble tea and a croissant. (But tragically, I’m not near any gluten-free bakeries, so no croissant for me! I could probably do something about the bubble tea, though!)
Tagging:
@the-surreptitious-albatross @howdaretrashships @momosandlemonsoda @enbysaurus-rex @wuxia-vanlifer @thesilversun @fealiniel @nutcasewithaknife @helendamnationx
(But no pressure if you don't want to do it! Also, anyone who wants to should consider themselves tagged!)

Operation Bunny: The Fairy Detective Agency’s First Case by Sally Gardner
Tumblr media
Here are the four W’s of the situation.
Where: A magical shop run by the Dashwood’s neighbor, Miss String. Full of treasures and fairy wings. Hard to find since it can walk.
When: Right Now.
Who: Emily Vole. Orphan. When she was a baby, she was found inside a hatbox at the train station. She was adopted shortly after by the Dashwoods, and made to wear a blonde wig with blue contact lenses. Until the Dashwoods had triplets, three baby girls. Instead of a daughter, Emily became a nanny. She is now being hunted down by a dangerous witch who insists on turning everyone into fluffy pink bunnies.
Why: It turns out that little Emily is the shop’s new Keeper of the Keys, even though she has absolutely no idea what’s inside.
Exactly how does Emily get herself out of this mess? Well, I can’t tell you. But I will say that she has friends like her batty old neighbor, Miss String, her talking cat Fidget, and a bumbling detective named Buster. She certainly isn’t in it alone. The downside is, she’s not the only one in danger.
Jen’s - Poor Emily Vole! After being left in an airport as a baby, she was adopted by a wealthy, childless couple, the Dashwoods. But alas, she was not the blonde, blue-eyed, perfect child that they wanted, and when Mrs. Dashwood discovers that she is expecting triplets, Emily is "demoted" from daughter to the family maid. Living in the basement, unable to attend school, and faced with mounds of laundry and household chores, Emily's life seems rather grim and hopeless. Then a chance meeting with her eccentric neighbor Mrs. String and a man-sized talking cat named Fidget turns Emily's world upside down and launches her on a wild adventure full of wing-less fairies, wicked witches, dancing magic keys, and rather a lot of enchanted pink bunny rabbits. This is a perfect read for fans of Roald Dahl (Matilda, James and the Giant Peach).

A coming of age story for the Dashwood sisters, who have lost their home but find love in Regency England
Other novels by Jane Austen
All of her novels have been adapted to screen. While all of her novels are good, I highlight these three because of their emphasis on female friendship and romanticism
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Jane Eyre has a troubling childhood but grows up to become a governess and fall in love with her benefactor in Regency England
The Help by Kathryn Stockett (The Help)
A white female journalist records the stories of two black women who work in white households during 1960′s America

Books:
*Some of which have movies that I either haven’t seen or didn’t personally like
The Girl with the Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
A fictional account of the servant girl who inspired the real life painting by Vermeer
The Awakening by Kate Chopin
A truly bleak tale set in New Orleans at the end of the 19th century following Edna as she begins to have an awakening about feminism which affects her daily life. This is regarding as one of the first novels to primarily focus on the concept of feminism.
Agatha Christie Mysteries
Agatha Christie was so good at what she did that her books are still used today in toxicology classes and she largely helped define the mystery genre
Nancy Drew Mysteries by Carolyn Keene
Though written for children, the Nancy Drew books follow the amateur detective and her female friends as they solve mysteries in mid-20th-century America and the character has become a cultural icon.
Gathering Blue and Son from “The Giver Quartet” by Lois Lowry
Books 2 and 4 in the Giver Quartet. While books 1 and 3 are also good, books 2 and 4 are featured here because they have female protagonists. The books are part of a series, but only loosely connected and can be read as standalone books if desired. Gathering Blue follows Kira in a dystopian future as she makes a place for herself in her village through her ability to dye cloth, a skill which helps prevent her from being cast out for being disabled. Son, meanwhile, follows Claire who is looking for her son after he was taken from her.

A staple of dark academia, it tells the story of Victor Frankenstein who creates artificial life and is immediately horrified by his creation, who swiftly grows angry and vengeful towards his creator.

Another staple of dark academia, follows six students who study the classics. The narrator is an adult version of one of the students reflecting on the events that led to a murder.

Taking place in Mexico, Tita is being kept from her lover by her traditionalist mother. Tita expresses herself through her cooking which takes on magical properties.
The Inkheart Series by Cornelia Funke (Inkheart, Inkspell, and Inkdeath)
Follows Maggie and her book-worm father after she discovers her father has the ability to bring to life any book that he reads aloud. They are quickly swept off into the narrative of a fantasy novel.
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
Though part of a trilogy, the first novel is the most appropriate for dark academia, following a female protagonist (Lyra) in a historical fantasy setting as she unravels a mystery.
Music:
Florence Welch
Lana Del Rey
Lorde
Hozier
Enya
Alice Merton
Regina Spektor
Lenka

Literary References & The Granger Family
Disclaimer: Most of these names are NOT canon and may not match your names of choice. But that's okay.
Magnus Edwin Granger - Hermione's Father
Magnus is a nod to the character Magnus Honey in the novel, Matilda by Roald Dahl, which, yes, came out long after his birth but I chose this because of the subtle similarities between Hermione and Matilda's characters.
Edwin is a nod to the lead character of The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens, the last novel that he ever wrote.
Imogen Elinor Granger - Hermione's Mother
Imogen is a nod to the king's daughter in Shakespeare's play Cymbeline, a character known as Shakespeare's most tenderly written female character.
Elinor is a nod to the protagonist in Jane Austen's novel Sense and Sensibility, Elinor Dashwood.
Hermione Jean Granger
Hermione is a nod to the queen in The Winter's Tale, another play by Shakespeare.
Jean could be a nod to the character Jean Valjean in Les Misérables by Victor Hugo.
Cymbeline Jane Granger - Hermione's Potential Sister
Cymbeline is a nod to Shakespeare's play Cymbeline, in which the character Imogen is in.
Jane is a nod to author Jane Austen.
Rosalind Bud Granger-Weasley - Hermione's Eldest Daughter
Rosalind is a nod to the heroine and protagonist of Shakespeare's play As You Like It.
Rosa Bud is a nod to a character in The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens.
Hugo Cabret Granger-Weasley - Hermione's Son
Hugo could be a nod to author Victor Hugo.
Hugo Cabret is a nod to the novel The Invention if Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, a book I believe Hermione read while pregnant with him.
Matilda Honey Granger-Weasley - Hermione's Youngest Daughter
Matilda Honey is a reference to the protagonist of Matilda by Roald Dahl, a character who shares qualities with Hermione.

The Dashwood Family Album: Volume XXII
We're dropping in on the household of Keziah's older sister Clara today, for some scenes of cosy domesticity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's always plenty of fun to be had in the bathroom.
Tumblr media
Although I think this is a rather more hygienic pastime for youngest child Harry.
Tumblr media
I love how the activity table allows kids of all ages to play together - John's schoolmate Isabel is joining him and his sister Alice this afternoon for a friendly colouring session.
Tumblr media
Not to be outdone by her younger sister, Clara decides to add a fourth youngster to her own brood too.
Tumblr media
Harry doesn't seem to think this is a wise move, and neither do I, given the modest proportions of their house!
Tumblr media
But big brother John leaps into action, getting the bathroom spic and span in readiness for the new arrival.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here she is - welcome to the neighbourhood, Matilda! She has her dad Daniel's soft blue eyes.

Fictional Female Characters!
The stress! The stress!
I have been trying to make this damn list for over a week now. It’s pointless. There are simply too many to list.
This is why I rarely do things like this.
Thanks to @edierone @mangokiwitropicalswirl @crossedbeams for tagging me.

Harper Pitt - Angels in America
Ouisa Kittredge - 6 Degrees of Seperation

Favorite Female Character Tag
Well, this one was interesting. I was tagged by @dreamywritingdragon, (thanks dear ˂3 ), so I just spent like half an hour to try and justify to myself why are these specific people in this specific order - I should mention that they are my favourite characters, because I find them very fascinating but not necessarily the “best people” (but some of them I just have a crush on lol)
The Rules: List ten of your favorite female characters in ten different fandoms and then tag ten people.
Elinor Dashwood (Sense and Sensibility by J. Austen)
Jane Eyre (JE by Ch. Bronte)
Hermione Granger (HP by J. K. Rowling)
Donna Noble (Doctor Who)
Lena Luthor (Supergirl)
Joan Watson (Elementary)
Blue Sargent (The Raven Cycle by M. Stiefvater)
Holly Short (Artemis Fowl by E. Colfer)
Matilda/Rosario (The Monk by M. Lewis)
Brienne of Tarth (GoT)
I honestly have no idea who to tag, the few people who follow me do not probably want to do this (but feel free of course!! I just don´t want to pressure anyone!)

Ten Interesting British Novels
1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
““It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” So begins Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen’s witty comedy of manners—one of the most popular novels of all time—that features splendidly civilized sparring between the proud Mr. Darcy and the prejudiced Elizabeth Bennet as they play out their spirited courtship in a series of eighteenth-century drawing-room intrigues. Renowned literary critic and historian George Saintsbury in 1894 declared it the “most perfect, the most characteristic, the most eminently quintessential of its author’s works,” and Eudora Welty in the twentieth century described it as “irresistible and as nearly flawless as any fiction could be.”” (Goodreads)
2. Lord of the Flies by William Golding
“When a plane crashes on a remote island, a small group of schoolboys are the sole survivors. From the prophetic Simon and virtuous Ralph to the lovable Piggy and brutish Jack, each of the boys attempts to establish control as the reality - and brutal savagery - of their situation sets in. The boys' struggle to find a way of existing in a community with no fixed boundaries invites readers to evaluate the concepts involved in social and political constructs and moral frameworks. Ideas of community, leadership, and the rule of law are called into question as the reader has to consider who has a right to power, why, and what the consequences of the acquisition of power may be. Often compared to Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies also represents a coming-of-age story of innocence lost.” (Goodreads)
3. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
“Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love—and its threatened loss—the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.” (Goodreads)
4. A Perfect Proposal by Katie Fforde
“Sophie Apperly's family has never taken her seriously. Fiercely academic, they see her more practical skills as frivolous whilst constantly taking advantage of her. So when her best friend Milly invites her over to New York, she jumps at the chance. It'll do her ungrateful family good to do without her for a while. What s more, she's on a quest America holds the key to solving her family's financial woes, even if they don't deserve her help. From the moment Sophie hits the bright lights of Manhattan she's determined to enjoy every minute of her big adventure. So when an evening at an art gallery throws her into the path of Matilda, a spirited old lady who invites her to Connecticut for Thanksgiving, Sophie willingly accepts, much to the dismay of Matilda's grandson Luke. Undeniably attractive but infuriatingly arrogant, he is very protective of his grandmother and seems to doubt Sophie's motives for befriending her. No match for the formidable Matilda, he eventually admits defeat, but first he has a proposal to make. He'll help Sophie in her quest to save her family from financial ruin if she repays the favour. But just what does she have to do in return...?” (Goodreads)
5. The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling
“When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils ... Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?” (Goodreads)
6. Tuesday’s Child by Louise Bagshawe
“The heroine this novel is a tomboy. She loves her Doc Martens, heavy metal, and hanging out with her best friend, Ollie. She may have been born on a Tuesday, but graceful she isn't. However, Grace's world is about to change. Ollie gets engaged, and her new boss wants her to smarten up. Grace tries to turn herself into the kind of girl she thinks they want her to be - with hilarious and unexpected results.” (Goodreads)
7. Jemima J by Jane Green
“Jemima Jones is overweight. About one hundred pounds overweight. Treated like a maid by her thin and social-climbing roommates, and lorded over by the beautiful Geraldine (less talented but better paid) at the Kilburn Herald, Jemima finds that her only consolation is food. Add to this her passion for her charming, sexy, and unobtainable colleague Ben, and Jemima knows her life is in need of a serious change. When she meets Brad, an eligible California hunk, over the Internet, she has the perfect opportunity to reinvent herself–as JJ, the slim, beautiful, gym-obsessed glamour girl. But when her long-distance Romeo demands that they meet, she must conquer her food addiction to become the bone-thin model of her e-mails–no small feat.” (Goodreads)
8. Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding
“Bridget Jones' Diary is the devastatingly self-aware, laugh-out-loud daily chronicle of Bridget's permanent, doomed quest for self-improvement — a year in which she resolves to: reduce the circumference of each thigh by 1.5 inches, visit the gym three times a week not just to buy a sandwich, form a functional relationship with a responsible adult, and learn to program the VCR. Over the course of the year, Bridget loses a total of 72 pounds but gains a total of 74. She remains, however, optimistic. Through it all, Bridget will have you helpless with laughter, and — like millions of readers the world round — you'll find yourself shouting, "Bridget Jones is me!"” (Goodreads)
9. Emma by Jane Austen
“Beautiful, clever, rich - and single - Emma Woodhouse is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage. Nothing, however, delights her more than interfering in the romantic lives of others. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected. With its imperfect but charming heroine and its witty and subtle exploration of relationships, Emma is often seen as Jane Austen's most flawless work.” (Goodreads)
10. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
“Orphaned into the household of her Aunt Reed at Gateshead and subject to the cruel regime at Lowood charity school, Jane Eyre nonetheless emerges unbroken in spirit and integrity. She takes up the post of governess at Thornfield, falls in love with Mr. Rochester, and discovers the impediment to their lawful marriage in a story that transcends melodrama to portray a woman's passionate search for a wider and richer life than Victorian society traditionally allowed. With a heroine full of yearning, the dangerous secrets she encounters, and the choices she finally makes, Charlotte Bronte's innovative and enduring romantic novel continues to engage and provoke readers.” (Goodreads)
