started watching the new live action avatar

it’s. It’s pretty ok I guess? But there’s a lot of things I’m not altogether happy about. It feels very. Generic. Which is kind of sad.

I’m only two episodes in though, so I won’t be too harsh. But there are a few things that I really don’t like, and number one was Aang going into the Avatar State in front of Sokka and Katara for the first time when seeing Monk Gyatso instead of when escaping Zuko, and that moment being isolated instead of the moment everyone in the world knew the Avatar had returned

in the original series, Aang goes into the Avatar State when confronted by irrefutable proof in the form of the skeleton of his best friend and mentor - the airbenders really were massacred and he can no longer deny it.

every statue of the Avatar around the globe lights up in a single moment. the legendary figure’s destined return is announced to the world by an overwhelming outpouring of grief and rage from a young child who just discovered that everyone he ever knew and loved is gone. it’s poignant. the Avatar’s return in that moment is not a triumph. that terrifying show of strength and power, enough to light up the world in its glow, is pure emotional anguish from a small twelve year old, who just saw the dead body of his mentor and now believes he is all alone

and Katara and Sokka having seen the Avatar State before means that there is less of the shock and “what is happening” in this pivotal scene (which was the main focus in the live action). of course Sokka is still concerned about them potentially getting flung off the mountain. but both of them know this reaction for what it is - mysterious power, sure, but primarily, they see and recognize his grief.

I just. what happened to “we’re your family now” and “neither of us are gonna let anything happen to you”??? :(

on a side note, I do feel like Katara and Sokka themselves have been heavily (heh) watered down. it’s a shame. Sokka’s my favourite, and I just think that I. Don’t trust writers with Katara now. (Why is her waterbending a secret? The whole reason she didn’t learn was because there was no one to teach her and she couldn’t leave… also where is her instant connection with Aang… where is their silliness… where did it go…)

however! I did like a couple things that were done and I want to be a bit positive so here

love Zuko and Suki’s actors. they did a great job

Sokka and Suki’s training together was cute ☺️ (though I wish he had worn the uniform of the Kyoshi Warriors…)

Aang himself is adorable :) (wish he got to be a little more silly but Netflix adaptations always are more serious for some reason)

I actually kind of enjoyed getting to see some of the scenes from the war’s outbreak. I prefer the way the original show portrays it, with a lot of info being learned reverse chronologically, but it was cool to see Sozin, and some of the airbenders, and a little more of Gyatso (who I also really enjoyed :’) )

Katara bending water at Aang and it reducing to them splashing each other without even trying to bend. Rare sillies!

I thought Kyoshi herself coming to defend her island was pretty sweet!!!

Katara getting flashbacks to her mother’s death on seeing firebending. Well I don’t like this, obviously, but it clearly shows how her mother’s death haunts her, and if they have Katara face off against Zuko again at the North Pole, it’ll be all the more triumphant.

Idk. Guess I just expected something more substantial #personally from what little we knew of Gyatso it actually does seem likely he’d break his vow if he really did die protecting the children #also. he was supposed to be the strongest airbender at the time. come on now. he just gets roasted?

No bc fuck tim but it really really bothers me how people ignore his growth like he used to be an asshole and I’ll give tim Stans one thing: now he’s so so so stale but what I disagree with is that this staleness is bc nobody likes him like it’s in fact the exact opposite where everyone likes him so much they dont want to do anything. Even when it’s him surface level challenging Bruce it’s when everyone else is doing it too; but he’s still the backbone of the fam! Etc. and it’s so irritating bc him gaining more compassion and empathy even for people he doesn’t fw is so fun to watch and that’s why the captain boomerang thing was so out of character! (Not in a from the author way but in a tim wouldn’t do that and he and Bruce both knew it which is why it went down like it did. Same way dick killing joker was ooc; not in fanon sense but in a he would hate himself forever for this sense) and speaking of that it’s such an interesting mirror to Bruce who genuinely believes that everyone can grow vs Tim’s it doesn’t matter if they grow it’s not my decision to make like it’s the same but it’s not AND WITH CASS’ IT DOESNT MATTER IF THEY CHOOSE NOT TO GROW I WONT DO IT! like ugh. And anyways even when people acknowledge it they boil it down to “Janet and Jack taught him that the capitalist pigs that they are” like no. This is who tim was. Ben Kenobi tells you it’ll be alright though and that you have the force in you #you can come with him and train to be a Jedi just like your father was #you leave planet and on the way have to put up with this asshole smuggler and even free a serial killer just to get to the rebels #but it’s fine! because once you’re with the rebels you’ll then be able to train with Ben like he’s promised #except you get there and there are two other Jedi candidates. each seemingly better options than you #one is a child who already has pretty good control of the force without anyone telling her how to wield it. #she’s also young and thus full of so much more potential than you #and the other is a woman older than you. but she has so much more life experience. she’s proven herself worthy both to the rebels #and to the force itself. she is strong and basically everything you’re not #but that’s alright too because Ben knows you. of course he’s going to pick to train you!! but then they say your name Skywalker with horror #and you are told about who your father is and how if you are trained and given everything you want you will become just like him #you are evil and violent by nature even though you feel as if you are anything but… except maybe they’re right #because when confronted with this fact your first instinct was to attack an injured man on death’s door #and if Kenobi has his time taken up by training either kahki or Jyn/planning the destruction of the Death Star #Luke is potentially left in a very vulnerable state to stew #I just am foaming at the mouth thinking about it!!!! #(I do feel like Andy will ultimately take Luke in a more redemption/I am not my father by ‘righteous’ sacrifice’ route though #which also has a lot of potential to be delicious)

This is such an out of nowhere thought (and probably not the first time anyone’s said it) but honestly imo Hans from Frozen would have been a much better character if he was an established villain/general power hungry jerk from the very beginning

ok rowan autoneurotic’s life and mental health advice: sometimes, oftentimes, you will be put in situations and you will not receive closure upon the situation’s end. you can run through all the what ifs or maybe i coulds or or or. but it doesn’t really get you anywhere. you can ask yourself what you want, what desire would be optimal and put your mind to rest if you did get to speak with whomever you need to speak to, but that…doesn’t really do anything either, does it? not in all cases, anyway. what you can do is acknowledge all your feelings, past and present, and accept them!!! you can’t help how you feel you can’t help what others do and how it affects you. but u can reconcile with yourself……maybe admit to a few Hard Truths and Realizations and it feels like mentally purging…god fucking awful hellstate while you’re sorting through it, but the nauseating whining worries and thoughts become less troublesome…..
