Ryu Number: "Jaws," the shark from "Jaws"
Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on a novel by Peter Benchley, the 1975 thriller Jaws tells the story of Larry Vaughn (played by Murray Hamilton), the mayor of the New England beach town of Amity Island. When a couple of ivory-tower out-of-towners recommend he close the beaches for fear of shark attack—a move that would herald economic disaster in the town's tourist season—Vaughn sticks to his principles and refuses. By the end of the film the shark—an isolated aberration—has been successfully disposed of, the out-of-towners have learned something about life in Amity Island, and Vaughn's position as mayor is all the more secure.
There are a number of terrible Jaws games, but the cleanest way to get to the shark is probably Universal Studios Theme Parks Adventure, a video game where you walk around a Universal Studios theme park, taking part in such thrilling activities as picking up garbage and shaking hands with Universal Studios characters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do this long enough, and Woody Woodpecker will even let you play a smattering of minigames based on Universal Studio franchises!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(And yes, that's definitely Jaws and not one of the Jawsoids from the sequels. You're on the Orca, Quint's boat, which didn't make it past its first appearance, on account of portions removed by shark.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I mean, it's not a faithful rendition of the Orca, but it's the Orca. Probably.)
Tumblr media
Alright, so Jaws has a Ryu Number of at most 3. But can we do better?
...Maybe?
Remember that bit I mentioned up there about shaking hands with Universal Studios characters? As you wander about the godforsaken place, looking for stray litter to exchange for points to exchange for hats to exchange for actual gameplay, you might run across this guy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right—Frankenstein is a Universal Studios character. The twin-bolted "fire no good" version of him, anyway. Which counts!
Granted, to me, those superdeformed proportions make this look more like a guy dressed in a Frankenstein mascot costume than the Frankenstein himself...
Tumblr media
...but you can also find E.T. wandering the park, and he seems the real deal—probably. Which doesn't necessarily mean Frankenstein is also the real deal, but sort of implies it? Maybe? Look, I dunno. Reality gets kind of liminal at Universal Studios.
Anyway, if you are willing to say that that is Frankenstein, that shortens Jaws' Ryu Number nicely to at most 2.
Tumblr media
("But the shark isn't named "Jaws"; "Jaws" is the name of the movie—" Yeah well Woody Woodpecker says otherwise.)
Tumblr media
(Go ahead. You tell Woody Woodpecker he's wrong. I'll wait.)

gearbox wont ever do anything with pandora beyond claiming 'it's filled with crazy bandits and is inhospitable' or wtvr but. i will cling to my hcs soooo
-Helios Fallen: still exists and is run as the second most prominent 'city' on Pandora. It's run with help from Atlas and Vaughn's the mayor but there's also a counsel. The cities main source of income is through manufacturing Atlas developed inventions and import/exports to Promethea. It's a major trade hub between other planets, especially Atlas' home planet. There's a healthy mix of Pandoran and ex-Hyperion people. The arid land surrounding the city is used as wind farms.
-Sanctuary: still exists lmao. Runs virtually how it was before it got blipped out of existence. it's an industrial city and a lot of it's income is with manufacturing weapons + cars. It's run by a counsel of Pandoran natives. Serves as the capital and most populated city on Pandora. The city is mostly Pandoran's from smaller towns and cities as well as a small pop. of ex-hyperion people. The outskirts of the city are mostly small farms.
-Hollow Point: still a 'shadier' part of Pandora but it's definitely much better. A lot of the main income is through mining and trade of native cave-grown food. Eridium and other rare minerals are exported.
-Ex-Opportunity: all of the old hyperion buildings were razed and the statues toppled over. new buildings were built and the city is a major water and food source exporter for lots of Pandora. The outskirts are healthy farmland. Smallest population on the planet.

Jaws (1975, Steven Spielberg)
12/03/2024
Jaws is a 1975 film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the 1974 novel of the same name by Peter Benchley. It tells the story of a great white shark that kills swimmers on Amity Island, prompting the local police chief to try to kill it with the help of a marine biologist and a shark hunter. The film stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, Richard Dreyfuss as oceanographer Matt Hooper, Robert Shaw as shart hunter Quint, Murray Hamilton as the mayor of Amity Island and Lorraine Gary as Brody's wife Ellen. The screenplay is credited to both Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actor-writer Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the screenplay during production.
Filmed mostly on location on Martha's Vineyard, Jaws was the first major motion picture shot offshore and, as a result, had a troubled production, exceeding its budget and schedule. Because the mechanical sharks created by the art department malfunctioned, Spielberg decided, in many scenes, to merely suggest the shark's presence, employing a menacing theme created by composer John Williams to indicate its approach.
Jaws was the prototype of the summer blockbuster and is considered a watershed in the history of cinema. Its release was considered a turning point in the history of cinema and the advent of the New Hollywood.
The film was released in US theaters on June 20, 1975. Generally well received by critics, Jaws became the highest-grossing film in history, and remained so until the release of Star Wars (1977). It won three Oscars for editing, sound and soundtrack for John Williams, as well as consecrating the fame of Steven Spielberg, then a little-known director aged just 28, and is often cited as one of the best films of all time. It was followed by three sequels, none of which featured Spielberg or Benchley, and many knockoff thrillers.
In 1998 the American Film Institute placed it in forty-eight place in the list of the 100 best American films of all time, while in 2007 it dropped to fifty-sixth place. In 2001, Jaws was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, being considered "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
In the seaside town of Amity Island (New England), a young woman leaves a late-night beach party to go for a swim, but while out at sea she is viciously attacked and dragged underwater by something. After the medical examiner concludes that it may be a shark attack, newly hired police chief Martin Brody wants to close the beaches, but Mayor Larry Vaughn convinces him to reconsider, fearing that the town's summer economy will suffer.

Three ships: Wolfstar, Pynch, Andriel
First ship: okay so for me it was Phoebe and Cole from Charmed. Do y’all remember Charmed? On TNT?? I was obsessed with that show from 3rd-5th grade. Anyway this is the first time I remember shipping a ship and knowing deep in my soul that they were not gonna be endgame and yet… Look, I know Cole was a demon and kept turning evil but like… they could’ve worked it out.
After that it was Sidney and Vaughn from Alias, which I still 100% stand by.
Last song: Just Like We Never Said Goodbye by Sophie. Mel made this Suburban Romance playlist and I’ve been vibing to it all day.
Last movie: It was Barbie, of course. Very fun, Push by Matchbox 20 you will always be famous!
Currently reading: Marginalia by @spindrifters As The Worm Moon Dies by @rollercoasterwords and this week I started The Mayors of Simpleton by @fruityindividual

Currently watching: lol I’m rewatching One Tree Hill, mostly writing while I watch because I basically have that show memorized. I just finished The Bear though, it was great. Very sexy.
Last thing I wrote: Ok so technically the last thing I wrote was a lesbian riff on @achilleslikespeas fic Immaculate Conception that I finished in a fugue state in one day. I already showed Claude and idk if I’ll end up posting it anywhere yet but I had so much fun writing it! My first time writing horror!
Currently Writing: Trucking along on the next chapter of True Blue! Also I’m gonna spend the next few weeks working on an original manuscript while I’m traveling, the working title is POPSTAR: Never Stop Being Gay :)

Please tell me more about the homosexual subtext in Jaws. I hadn't considered it before!
there is something inherently sexual to me about 3 men being stranded in the middle of nowhere with nothing but each other to accompany themselves in between the thrill of the hunt ... how the only person with a family is the chief. Quint, Brody, hooper all being truly committed to their work, and we see Brody's struggle with this when his child's life is in danger as a result of his inaction. i really love the moments before hooper & brody's dinner where michael brody is imitating his father-- making the same pained expressions without knowing what could be so troubling to his dad. young michael learning to perform his masculinity by watching the chief internalize the consequences of mayor vaughn's refusal to protect civilians amidst shark attacks. AND ALL AT THE DINNER TABLE AS ELLEN OBSERVES.. when hooper, brody & quint are finally on the boat and we see hooper imitate quint's can-crushing in the same way michael imitates the chief. The chief's power and jurisdiction clashing with quints. Before the departure when Brody kisses ellen goodbye and she cries not just because she is fearful that he may be putting his life in danger but because of his proximity to Quint. who sings raunchy songs about women only in the context of their sexuality. and who has hooper and brody prove their competence and strength to him before he can allow them to join the hunt. quint never opening up about the uss indianapolis until moments before his death.. hooper LITERALLY baring his chest at quint & brody and explaining his failures in his relationships with women. while brody observes, wondering if the only scar he has, an appendix removal is enough to share.. the trio's shared experience by the end is as intimate and scarring as anything they've ever endured. TOGETHER AS MEN
sorry this is so disorganized and not really elaborating moreso just conjuring images and pointing at them pepe silvia style

Jaws Real Now
Tumblr media
Two swimmers were apparently attacked by sharks off the shores of Long Island on Tuesday, a day after two others reported being attacked while enjoying the water at popular New York beaches. At least one beach delayed opening to holiday revelers Tuesday, after Police Chief Brody was overruled by local officials on shutting the beach down for the 4th of July. Local business was cited as the reason for opening the beaches back up. "We need summer dollars," said Mayor Larry Vaughn. Despite the attacks, holiday revelers remained on the beach. "The beaches are open, and people are having a wonderful time," added Vaughn who is probably going to regret his loose stance on beach safety.

January NoveList Challenge: Read a 2023 Debut
A Good House for Children by Kate Collins
Once upon a time Orla was: a woman, a painter, a lover. Now she is a mother and a wife, and when her husband Nick suggests that their city apartment has grown too small for their lives, she agrees, in part because she does agree, and in part because she is too tired to think about what she really does want. She agrees again when Nick announces with pride that he has found an antiquated Georgian house on the Dorset cliffs - a good house for children, he says, tons of space and gorgeous grounds.
But as the family settles into the mansion - Nick absent all week, commuting to the city for work - Orla finds herself unsettled. She hears voices when no one is around; doors open and close on their own; and her son Sam, who has not spoken in six months, seems to have made an imaginary friend whose motives Orla does not trust.
Four decades earlier, Lydia moves into the same house as a live-in nanny to a grieving family. Lydia, too, becomes aware of intangible presences in the large house, and she, like Orla four decades later, becomes increasingly fearful for the safety of the children in her care. But no one in either woman’s life believes the stories that seem fanciful, the stuff of magic and mayhem, sprung from the imaginations of hysterical women who spend too much time in the company of children.
Are both families careening towards tragedy? Are Orla and Lydia seeing things that aren’t there? What secrets is the house hiding?
The Art of Scandal by Regina Black
On the night of her husband Matt’s fortieth birthday, Rachel Abbott receives a sexy, explicit text from her husband that she quickly realizes was meant for another woman. Divorce is inevitable, and Rachel is determined not to leave her thirteen-year marriage empty handed. Meanwhile, Matt, a rising star mayor with his eye on the White House, can’t afford a messy split in the middle of his reelection campaign. They strike a deal: Rachel gets one million dollars and their lavish house in the wealthy DC suburb of Oasis Springs, as long as she keeps playing the ideal Black trophy wife until the election.
Then Rachel meets Nathan Vasquez, a very handsome, very lost twenty-six-year-old artist, and their connection makes Rachel forget about being the perfect politician’s wife. As Rachel reawakens Nathan’s long-dormant artistic aspirations, their attraction becomes impossible to resist. But secrets are hard to keep in a town like Oasis Springs, and Nathan has a few of his own. With the risk of scandal looming and their hearts on the line, they’ll have to decide whether the possibility of losing everything is worth taking a chance on love.
The Curse of Penryth Hall by Jess Armstrong
After the Great War, American heiress Ruby Vaughn made a life for herself running a rare bookstore alongside her octogenarian employer and house mate in Exeter. She’s always avoided dwelling on the past, even before the war, but it always has a way of finding her. When Ruby is forced to deliver a box of books to a folk healer living deep in the Cornish countryside, she is brought back to the one place she swore she’d never return. A more sensible soul would have delivered the package and left without rehashing old wounds. But no one has ever accused Ruby of being sensible. Thus begins her visit to Penryth Hall.
A foreboding fortress, Penryth Hall is home to Ruby’s once dearest friend, Tamsyn, and her husband, Sir Edward Chenowyth. It’s an unsettling place, and after a more unsettling evening, Ruby is eager to depart. But her plans change when Penryth’s bells ring for the first time in thirty years. Edward is dead; he met a gruesome end in the orchard, and with his death brings whispers of a returned curse. It also brings Ruan Kivell, the person whose books brought her to Cornwall, the one the locals call a Pellar, the man they believe can break the curse. Ruby doesn’t believe in curses - or Pellars - but this is Cornwall and to these villagers the curse is anything but lore, and they believe it will soon claim its next victim: Tamsyn.
To protect her friend, Ruby must work alongside the Pellar to find out what really happened in the orchard that night.
The Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz
Five attendees are selected for a month-long writing retreat at the remote estate of Roza Vallo, the controversial high priestess of feminist horror. Alex, a struggling writer, is thrilled.
Upon arrival, they discover they must complete an entire novel from scratch, and the best one will receive a seven-figure publishing deal. Alex’s long-extinguished dream now seems within reach.
But then the women begin to die.
Trapped, terrified yet still desperately writing, it is clear there is more than a publishing deal at stake at Blackbriar Estate. Alex must confront her own demons – and finish her novel – to save herself.
