MAYSVILLE, Ky. Authorities are investigating reports of the sighting of a large, long-haired creature with 'glowing animal-like eyes' at the isolated home of a Mason County farmer last weekend.
Charles Fulton, 39, told county authorities he fired two shots with a .22-caliber pistol, but said it seemed not to affect the creature which loped off at a 'slow-motion kind of gallop.'
Fulton and his family were at their rural home in a heavily wooded area watching television last Saturday night when another child came into the living room and said someone was turning the back door knob. Thinking the child was playing a prank, Fulton made him sit and watch TV.
'A few minutes later, something liked to have tore my front door off,' Fulton told authorities Wednesday.
He said he opened the door and saw a creature more than 7-feet tall standing there, covered with long whitish hair. 'It was standing on two feet like a human and its head was taller than the door frame, which is 6 feet, 8 inches,' Fulton said.
Opening the door apparently startled the creature, which ran off the porch. Fulton went back in, put on his coat and got the pistol, He then went to the back yard, where he spotted it standing between an outbuilding and the house.
It was then he noticed its 'glowing eyes and hair like a horse's mane,' he said, 'I fired at it twice from about 30 feet away and don't see how I could have missed.'
He said the creature turned slowly and 'ran off at a slow-motion gallop.'
His wife, Wanda, 36, and several of the children said they also saw the creature from inside the house.
Fulton discounted the possibility the creature was a bear because of its upright position, and said it certainly was not a man in costume.
The sighting was the first of an ape-like creature in Kentucky for more than two years. At that time, motorists on the Pennyrile Parkway in western Kentucky saw a large hairy creature bound off into the woods.
Robert Gardiner, 40, a big game hunter for 20 years, is convinced he has found the lair of Bigfoot in the hills of southern Ohio near McArthur. He urged hunters to hold their fire if they see him.
Gardiner says an analyst, who examined blood samples taken from a tree in Wayne National Forest in Vinton County, described the samples as 'apelike humanoid blood.'
However, Gardiner says he will have the blood analyzed again to get a second opinion.
The first analyst, Gardiner said, 'could not break it (blood) down into one of the human categories, but it did come from some sort of primate.'
Gardiner, a native of Lexington and now a resident of Columbus, Ohio, is president of the North American Sasquatch (Bigfoot) Research Team, and has been searching in the hills for over a week.
'I have not seen them but I sure have heard them,' said Gardiner who has also searched the Pacific Northwest for the creature he believes is the missing link.

Death of Thomas Mantell
What may be the first documented death resulting from someone chasing after a UFO occurred in Kentucky on January 7, 1948. The story begins at one fifteen p.m. when the Kentucky State Police contacted officials at Godman Air Force Base, just outside Louisville, with reports of UFO sightings in Maysville. Twenty minutes later the state police would call again: UFOs had also been sighted in Owensboro and Irvington.
In ten minutes, the control tower at Godman got its first glimpse of the UFO as as it approached the base. At that time, they ascertained that the object was not a weather balloon or a plane. They described it as gray, metallic, conical, and rotating.
At two thirty, a team of four F-51 fighter planes happened to approach the base. The control tower called the flight leader, Captain Thomas Mantell, briefed him of the situation, and asked him to investigate. One F-51 in the fleet was running low on fuel and continued on its course, but Mantell took his other two planes and went after the UFO.
Mantell sighted the UFO above him and followed it to 20,000 feet while his men dropped back at 15,000 feet. He had maintained active radio contact with the control tower, but suddenly stopped responding. His plane could no longer be seen. There are reports that he flew to perhaps 30,000 feet and may have passed out from lack of oxygen. Whether because of this or something related to the UFP he was pursuing. Mantell's plane crashed in a farm field 130 miles away from Godman. His watch allegedly stopped at three sixteen p.m.
The control tower at Godman lost sight of the UFO in the next half hour, but reports of a UFO occurred throughout the Midwest about four hours later.
Early in the morning on January 8, Captain James F. Duesler arrived to investigate Mantell's crash site. He saw that the plane appeared to have belly flopped straight down, which was totally inconsistent for a crash of this type. There should have been damaged to surrounding woods from an angular trajectory, and the nose-heavy weight of the plane should have brought it down nose first. He also saw that although the wings and tail had broken off, the fuselage sustained little damaged.
Duesler found no blood in the plane's cockpit. Mantell's body had already been taken away, but others at the scene allegedly informed Duesler that "nowhere on the body had the skin been punctured or penetrated, yet all the bones had been crushed and pulverized."
The air force maintained that Mantell must have been chasing Venus and ran out of oxygen. After that it was pointed out that Venus was nowhere near that position in the sky at the time, they changed their story and insisted it was a balloon that Mantell was chasing, even though the control tower had earlier verified that what they saw had not been w eather balloon.
Regardless of what he had actually been chasing, Mantell's quest to get to the bottom of the unknown took him a little further into it than he planned on going. His body was laid to rest in Louisville's Zachary Taylor National Cemetery.

Music History Today: May 23, 2023
May 23, 1928: Rosemary Clooney was born in Maysville, Kentucky. She rose to prominence when Columbia Records issued "Come On-a My House," her first single to sell a million copies. That breakthrough paved the way for other hits, including "Batch-a-Me," "Tenderly," "This Ole House," "Hey There," and "Suzy Snowflake." Soon after, Clooney made her first appearance in Las Vegas. The Rosemary Clooney Show began in May of 1956 and featured Nelson Riddle's Orchestra and the Hi-Los. In 1957 she fronted The Lux Show, Starring Rosemary Clooney, and appeared in the award-winning The Edsel Show with Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra.
The non-stop activity exacted its toll on the development of Clooney's career. For much of the 1960s, Clooney was plagued by relationships, money, and drug problems. In 1968 she had a nervous breakdown. During the mid-to-late 1970s, Clooney returned to performing, slowly rebuilding her career at small venues like Holiday Inns. Merv Griffin invited her to make several appearances on his television show. In March of 1976, she joined Bing Crosby during his 50th-anniversary tour. Clooney recorded her first album for Concord Records in 1977.
In 1995 Clooney received ASCAP's Pied Piper Award, the premier award for performing artists, and an Emmy nomination for a guest appearance on ER. Clooney's sister Betty died of an aneurysm in 1976, eventually leading Rosemary to found the Betty Clooney Center in Long Beach, California. In 2001 she was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Because of her surgery, Clooney could not attend the Grammy ceremony to receive her Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. Clooney died from complications six months later, on June 29, 2002, at 74.

➤ BIOGRAPHY
Omari had a very normal life by most standards.
He grew up with two very present parents, his mother a palliative care nurse, his father an auto mechanic. He was the youngest of three children, the only boy, and he got along with his sisters just fine, always had. They were a close knit family living in a small, close knit town just outside of Maysville, Kentucky- they even had a white picket fence out front and a twelve-year-old Golden Retriever named Tallulah who’d been with the family since she was a puppy. Like the other two Jameson children, Omari got good grades all throughout school, and he went to the local college when he graduated to major in auto mechanics just like his father had decades before him.
The town was divided into two kinds of people- those who were trying their hardest to get out and those who had no intention of ever leaving. Omari fell into the latter category, always having planned one making a life for himself in his hometown. His oldest sister, Deborah, was of the other camp, and as soon as she’d graduated high school, she’d moved to state across the country for university. His second sister, Kendra, also left town a couple years after Deborah, this time for love, following her high school sweetheart out of state- they all still kept in touch, but it was clear that the two Jameson daughters wanted more for themselves than what their small hometown could give them. Omari, however, was content with the mundane. He didn’t want excitement or adventure- he wanted to live a simple life; get a job at the family garage and eventually take over one day, find himself a nice wife, have himself a couple kids. Normalcy. That was what he craved above all else.
Likely because his life wasn’t as normal as it seemed to be.
Omari found out he was a Fire Elemental completely by accident. He was probably in the second grade, out on the playground with his best friend, Keaton, when they were approached by some older kids who were intent on making trouble. A scuffle ensued, Keaton was hurt, and in a flash of rage at the injustice, Omari lashed out at the bully- only, instead of using his fists, he somehow managed to set the boy’s shirt on fire, sending the older kids scampering away in fear. The incident was never reported, as the other boys were both worried they’d get in trouble for starting it and because they were worried about retaliation from Omari, and the ordeal was brushed under the rug.
Nothing happened again for years, and it was easy for Omari to pretend it was a trick of the imagination or some sort of accident. Keaton remained his best friend in the ensuing years, and he too played along with the notion that it’d just been some sort of weird day dream.
Until it happened again.
he second time, Omari was closer to thirteen, during another instance where he lost his temper. This time, he ended up nearly setting his house on fire.
It was a lot harder to ignore things the second time around, harder to pretend like it was nothing. He knew he couldn’t go to his family with this, knew that they just wouldn’t understand, that I’d only disrupt the perfect life they’d built for themselves in their perfect little bubble. He’d always been an extremely empathetic and considerate child, he never wanted to trouble anyone else, least of all his family. Keaton was the only one who knew about what was happening, and together, the two of them tried their best to figure out what was going on. But with no knowledge of the supernatural, and never having heard about something like it outside movies and tv shows, they were at a loss. Eventually, they came to the conclusion that, if they couldn’t figure out what it was, they could try to suppress it so it didn’t happen anymore. As they’d noticed that the issue only came about when Omari was particularly angry or distressed, it was safe to assume that, as long as he could control himself and stay level headed, the mysterious powers wouldn’t manifest.
And sure enough, Omari began teach himself methods of relaxation and self control- he began to do yoga every day, immersed himself in things like reading and spending time with his family and loved ones. This was when his love for auto mechanics really blossomed as he’d spend all his afternoons with his father, learning the trade- he found out that he had a real knack for it, and the added bonus was that it cleared his mind in the same way yoga did.
For nearly two decades, Omari did not have another slip up- it was easy to forget it’d ever even happened in the first place. One night, on Omari’s thirty fifth birthday, he and Keaton were having a couple drinks when the topic came up again during a drunken conversation. It was his best friend who’d mentioned, innocently enough, why he’d never thought to revisit the situation, why he never thought to look into it again, now that they were older. Honestly, it’d crossed Omari’s mind now and again, but he was reluctant to do so because he somehow new in his gut that it’d turn his perfect, normal life right on its head.
That night when he got home, curiosity got the best of him, and he spent the entire night up doing research. He was on a forum in the wee hours of the morning, one that spoke of all sorts of rubbish like superpowers and magic, when he got a message from another member, a moderator, claiming to have the answers to his questions. Against his better judgement, Omari confided in this stranger, and the person sure enough did seem to have answers- only it was nothing he wanted to hear. Superpowers, Supernaturals, elemental magic- it had to be bogus. Omari had left the conversation abruptly and for a couple days, he completely put it out of his head.
But then curiosity got the best of him again.
He was home alone when he tried to access his powers, as the person from last night put it. If it was nothing, if it was fake, then nothing would happen, right? It took some time, long enough that Omari nearly gave up, relieved, but then it happened- a warmth racing through his arms, a tingle in his fingertips, and then there it was. Fire.
He was back on that forum in a flash, only to see that the person had left him one last message that he’d decided not to read before. If you want more answers, real answers, there’s a school for people like you. Interested?
Omari agonized over the message for what felt like hours, fingers hovering over the keyboard. Eventually, he typed out a response and hit send before he could stop himself.
Yes.

The KSB Miniatures Collection in Maysville, Kentucky The highlight of this quirky museum, which features 300 years of genealogy records and thousands of artifacts from Maysville, is its extensive collection of miniatures. Each of these meticulously rendered models of people, buildings, and furniture are precisely at 1/12th scale. Peer inside a tiny version of a Pennsylvania Dutch kitchen or, around the holiday season, Santa's North Pole workshop. The collection comes courtesy of Kathleen Savage Browning, who spent years bidding for these miniatures.  https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/kentucky-gateway-museum-center

Higginsport School
308 Gaines St.
Higginsport, OH 45131
The Higginsport School at the junction of Jackson and Gaines Sts. in Higginsport, Ohio, is a formerly abandoned school under renovations. The first school for Brown County was a one-room log structure built in 1807 near the banks of the Ohio River in Higginsport. The school was relocated to Robert Higgins’ warehouse in 1822 and to a larger log structure in Higginsport’s public square in 1828. The first brick school in the town was completed in 1845, but it was soon overcapacity. As early as 1868, measures were undertaken for a bigger facility but no action was taken until the spring of 1880 when an election was held that resulted in the citizens voting for a larger school building.
The estimated cost of the new Higginsport School was $15,000, although it was completed at the cost of $18,000 in 1881. The new two-story late-Victorian and Italianate-styled building was modeled after a similar school in Maysville, Kentucky, and consisted of six rooms with 16-foot ceilings with room for 250 students. The cornerstone contained a copy of each newspaper published in the county along with sketches of the earlier schools in Higginsport, coins, portraits of county, state, and federal officials. The school was expanded in 1930 with a gymnasium and again in 1932 with a cafeteria. Modern indoor plumbing was installed throughout the complex with the latest addition
Higginsport School was consolidated into the Ripley-Union-Lewis-Huntington School district in 1952, and elementary students continued to use the building until 1987 when it was mothballed. The property was later sold to the village for $1. While the gymnasium was initially used for dances and other functions, the cost of heating and cooling the entire complex proved to be a financial burden to the village, and the school was abandoned until 1997 when it was used as an emergency shelter for local residents when the Ohio River flooded. The flood provided the school building with attention and support, and in less than one year, the Higginsport Community Improvement Group (HCIG) applied for a State Historical Building designation. In 1999, the Higginsport School became a state historic building, which allowed the HCIG to apply for a grant to defray the cost of a new roof on the complex. The School was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 14, 2000.
