so one of my other problems with babyjack is that the fandom just seems to have this sort of collective cognitive dissonance about it, in almost any context or discussion. like this post as probably my only standing example (bc it’s the only one to have gotten traction), there are all these tags about how babyjack leads to bad dean criticism, or how it’s nice in aus but they want canon complex jack, and like I’m not entirely disagreeing with that, but it is so fucking frustrating that people are still ignoring the actual problem with it and either only focusing on the most surface level issues that personally affect them or their corner of the fandom, or making up some point of acceptability for it that frankly isn’t theirs to make.

it’s the autistic experience of our struggles never being seen or cared about until they become other people’s inconveniences, and our voices being used to say something else entirely. when the main takeaway of that post is how the fandom’s treatment of jack being in a way he’s explicitly shown to hate being treated directly mirrors autistic people’s struggle for autonomy in the real world, I really do not need you to make it about how it makes your golden website boy dean look like a big meanie pants, okay? that’s definitely a part of it, but it’s not at all what we are talking about, and it 100% should not be the only reason you care.

and especially when the other takeaway is how this is just a smaller scale issue that comes from autistic infantilization, the absolute last take I want to hear is that you find that infantilization acceptable as long it’s an AU or something else separated from canon. believe me, I’m beyond glad more people actually prefer canon complex jack—like, I don’t think you guys understand that that is legitimately a rarity to find here— but the thing about babyjack is that the concept itself is inherently ableist, and directly relies on his complexities (and the representation he means for us) being removed and erased so that he can even exist in the context of those AU’s. It feels very… ‘have your cake and eat it too’ to me.

I’m trying not to sound angry or accusatory, but I am also tired of having to force civility on a problem that’s pretty much just an open secret thar everyone collectively ignores and beats bushes around solely because they prioritize #domesticdestiel over all. I mean, do you guys even hear yourselves sometimes? Like half of it just boils down to “Autistic infantilization is always bad, except for this one context where it makes my ship look domestic and redeems my blorbo,” and it’s getting really fucking annoying to have to constantly explain something that is not only painfully easy to understand, but is understood and actively ignored, and still play nice so that somebody out there might listen.

So many people will say they like canon Jack and want more of him from the fandom, and I more than agree, but motherfucker you have a blog! You have the tools! Be the change you want to see! He doesn’t have to be your fav or your blog thesis blorbo, but if you want it, you are literally fully equipped to make it! Write some meta, draw some fanart, whatever. Better yet, you could even stop engaging with and perpetuating content that actively pushes down on what you want and, I must reiterate, is actively harmful and ableist. If you want domestic silliness go right ahead, but you don’t need to resort to ableism to do it.

I don’t think I’m asking too much or asking rudely, and frankly I don’t even think I owe niceties to anyone when it’s a problem that has been openly ignored for 6 years and holds plenty of bearing in the real world concerning my identity and community and shit we face constantly. Outside of our screens, we are constantly fighting for autonomy and recognition and representation, and even to be seen as people. Online spaces, especially fandom spaces, are a huge source of escapism and support that we wouldn’t get otherwise. So for the love of god, please stop bringing that fight here.

No idea what I did wrong but it might be the deactivation. Thought I'd make my answer into a separate post :) I think they are now @jessamydream but I will remove the tag if not. I've used the questions they asked as little subheadings so hopefully this will all make sense.

What are the Corinthian's feelings towards Jessamy and Lucienne?

In your ask you mentioned Jessamy flying out of Dream's robe in episode one and I had actually completely forgotten about that! It is very intimate! I also have the most adorable image of her tucked in there and peaking her head out to judge people. During that first scene with the Corinthian she would have been right there listening. Ooh, if he had known it could be a reason for telling Burgess to get rid of her (for having witnessed him being rebuked?) but I also think that it was a practical choice. The Corinthian would have known she’d never give up trying to free Dream.

There might be some degree of regret, but I don’t think he really felt guilty for it. The Corinthian would very much see it as necessary, but it was also quite a self-serving way of soothing jealousy.

Personally I think he’s very jealous of the ravens!

Especially Lucienne. I think there’s this very real tension between them because of it. I do think the Corinthian is like ‘yes well you may be a human soul but he made me and I’ll have something you’ll never have’. The intimacy between an artist and their work I suppose. Though I also think it makes him resent the way Dream dotes on her, because she’s not held to the same standards as he is.

Lucienne has a freedom within the Dreaming that is unique.

She has changed from the role of a raven to that of a librarian, an agency within her place there that the Corinthian doesn't have in his. The ravens aren’t there to shoulder the burden of Dream’s role in the same way that his creations are. While that means the Corinthian can be smug about sharing that, perhaps seeing that he can do far more of the heavy lifting in terms of supporting Dream's responsibilities to the dreamers, he might also feel siloed by it. I’ve got some wips that play with this idea but yeah…jealousy, a bit of resentment, but also a lot of possessiveness.

They both have something of Dream that the other will never have.

How does the Corinthian feel about Dream visiting a human every 100 years?

Ok so I definitely think the Corinthian knew that Dream was meeting someone in the Waking World. But in many ways I don’t think he really cared too much. Based just off of what we see in the show the meetings themselves seemed very contained. It was probably seen more as Dream keeping an eye on an experiment, and I think any jealousy would be folded into the Corinthian’s resentment of Dream’s strict commitment to role.

So I don’t really think it impacted the Corinthian at all—especially given Dream’s nonchalance when Death reminds him about missing the meeting with Hob—I think he’s far more jealous of Dream’s relationship with Lucienne (and Jessamy/Matthew).

Is the Corinthian jealous of Dream's lovers?

In terms of Dream’s other relationships, I really need to finish my fic with Calliope and the Corinthian so I can delve into this a little more.

But in truth I think the Corinthian probably feels similar to how he feels towards Lucienne. When Dream married Calliope he probably saw it as ‘yeah you’re his wife but I’m his favourite creation so how does that really compare’?. A weird mix of jealousy and possessiveness? The same as with all the relationships I think – the Corinthian is very much like ‘he is mine in a way he’ll never be yours’. And he’s proven right most of the time in how quickly the lovers come and go, in how easily (in his eyes) they give up.

I think the Corinthian is satisfied by that, looks down on them, is amused when a new one comes along like ‘oh? How long will you last before you do your best to break his heart?’

The Corinthian knows that eventually they will leave, that the Dreaming will return to how it was before. So maybe there is a little bit of protectiveness too. I think he considers them unworthy, unable to really appreciate all of what Morpheus is, and again that is something he’s consistently proven right about.

Calliope is probably the only one who he felt actually ‘threatened’ by though.

Interestingly enough (to bring this back to your questions about Lucienne and Jessamy) Dream’s longest ‘relationships’ are arguably those he has with his ravens. I think that's why the Corinthian is far more jealous of them then any new/old lover. There’s a degree of compatibility and love between him and them that is incredibly powerful, incredibly unique. And it lasts. There is always loyalty and care there, the ravens understand him, and they all stay with Dream throughout everything he has to be without flinching. Even when things end terribly (as with Jessamy’s death).

I would love to hear more about your writing style and how you plan the over arching storyline. You’ve mentioned that you don’t write linearly, so how do you keep everything straight?

Do you have a cohesive idea of the big picture, or is it more of a bunch of scenes bouncing around that you need to find a way to weave together? How do you know what is chapter 18 versus chapter 10 versus chapter 4? I’ve also seen you mention that Remi is high functioning autistic, and you’ve tagged a few things as nuro spicy. I gather that a lot of your writing is deeply reflective of your own lived experiences and now I’m wondering how Remi’s going to manage relearning history if her author likes to jump around this much!

So basically I'll have an overarching idea and some scenes in my head already and then everything else will just happen as I go.

So for T&T I know

what I want to do with the Varrish situation

what I want to do at Tecarus' place

what I want to do with Melgren/Samara/the final battle

and how I want their relationship to go

how it's going to end

So there's a few pivotal scenes in my head already and then there's things like

how Papa Sorrengail died

how Lilith really feels about Remi

how Violet will react to her sister this time around

how Remi will react to RSC

and I basically just try and weave them all together as I go. I keep notes in my phone in a linear-fashion and if I think of something I'll slot it into the 'timeline' but in saying I write non-linearly, it's more like...I get demand avoidance, right? So if I'm up to RSC but my brain just doesn't want to initiate, instead of screeching to a halt, I'll write for example a scene regarding Papa Sorrengail's death, put it to the side and come back to it later and fit it in somewhere.

So when I say 10 vs 18 vs 4, it's like, I've actually written up to 18, I have 18 chapters, but my brain might later go oh wait, you want this in here, and then I have to go back and change things or weave things in, so while I have 18 chapters, 4 could then become 5 and push each one along so I have 19. I hope that makes sense?

I tend to write more of a character/emotion driven story so that definitely helps because I'm really just weaving a little plot around all the feels.

Remi is very, very deeply reflective of me and my lived experiences, more than any other FMC I've ever written. I think every writer puts pieces of themselves in their work, but Remi in particular I put so much of my soul into. Fear & Flame was a very cathartic experience, I wrote it for me and I was honestly surprised so many people liked it. I almost didn't post it at all.

I've always felt like Remi. It was only once I learned that I could be on the spectrum that I started figuring out why I am the way I am and do the things I do, and also, really, why most people don't like me. And that's not like, me feeling sorry for myself, it's just a fact, most people don't. It's why it feels kind of special whenever someone tells me they see themselves in her.

Because Remi is so logical, she's just pushing everything to the side and going 'ok, this is what I know is true because I've seen it with my own eyes' and working from there. Honestly in T&T part one, she's a little too busy to even think about it, but she's definitely asking questions. I think it's this, that separates her so much from Violet. She won't let things go and she will ask whatever questions pop into her head a lot of the time (which is tough because we don't have too much history/lore to work with).

Hey! I just came across your post about short podfics and, as someone who's been making podfics for a couple of years, I thought I might share some advice (feel free to ignore it if it doesn't sound helpful or appealing of course)

I understand where you're coming from, but there are multiple reasons why asking authors to share your podfic as part of their fic post, instead of posting it yourself, isn't a good idea. First, editing an AO3 post to add all the links to the podfic, all the necessary tags, etc. is actually a lot of work to ask from an author, and if that's your expectation, they might decide it's just not worth the time/effort. Because, second, a podfic that you made, no matter how long or short, is *your* work. It belongs on your account, and publishing it is your job, not the fic's author's. If you're worried about clutter on your account, you can create a separate pseud, or even a separate account for your podfics. And third, posting the podfic as a new work makes it easier to find for potential listeners. A person browsing the most recent works in the Podfic tag in search for new podfics will likely not notice that a podfic was added to some old fic, unless the author changes the publication date on their fic, or adds the podfic as a new chapter (which means even more work for them)

There are some situations where posting the fic and the podfic together as one work makes sense: for example if you're the author of both the fic and the podfic, or if you're collaborating with an author and you're posting the fic and podfic together as co-authors. But if you're making a podfic of someone else's fic that's already published, it just makes more sense to post it yourself. Remember that, as a podficcer, you're not just a text-to-speech service, you're a creator too. Even if it's just a 100-word drabble, you still deserve full credit for your work (and all the kudos and comments from your listeners) <3

Yes, thank you for your input. I have been wrestling with these issues for a few weeks now as I am just starting out in podfics. But I have come to the conclusion that because of me and my fandom’s unique situation, despite the points of concern that you list, I am justified in the way I choose to podfic.

For me, making podfics is about a) having fun and learning a new skill, b) making stories accessible to people who can’t read them (like me when my disabilities flare up), c) doing podfic outreach and trying to recruit as many people as possible to try their hand at making (non-AI) podfics so that I don’t have to do all the work myself.

I don’t care about recognition or attention. Podfics in my fandom generally get minimal interaction anyways—20-30 kudos and a handful of comments, if any at all. I went into this knowing that making podfics would be a labor of love and would have to be intrinsically rewarding to be a sustainable hobby. Besides, it’s the authors of the story that deserve the credit. I’m just reading the story out loud which isn’t a particularly hard or noteworthy feat.

I do not care about having podfics on my own account for the purpose of claiming them as mine. As long as the beginning of the podfic audio has “spoken by Unexpected Stormy,” that’s good enough for me. Our fandom is small with only 6-10k fics and 38 podfics total so even if new podfic audio was put in an old fic, as long as it was tagged correctly, it would still easily be found because of how few there are to start with.

Actually, my preference is for authors to put my audio in their fics because it would reduce the redundancy of having two ao3 fics for the same story, and it is better in my opinion to have everything in one place: the story, the fanart, the podfic.

But I do recognize that asking them to put my audio in their fic creates more work for them so I give the authors the choice to decide for themselves what they would prefer, especially if I ask to record their podfic and they did not self-rec it to me.

I do think that all fics are worthy to be podficced (by people not AI), and I hope someday that they will be, but alas, I do not have the time or energy to podfic anything and everything, so I have to pick and choose. The podfics I like to listen to are 15 minutes+ long, so that is the kind of podfic I prefer to record. It’s more “bang for your buck” to create these longer podfics than shorter <10 minute podfics.

I have a few ways of choosing fics to podfic, and one of the main ways is by having authors self-recommending their fics to me that they would like podficced. If an author asks me to podfic a shorter work and I am willing to do it, but as a trade off, I ask that they contribute a little of their own time and effort and put the podfic in their own stories. I do think it is fair to put this stipulation on recording a shorter podfic. After all, I’m the one doing it, so I get to make the rules. And of course, I would help them link the podfic and tag it (it’s not hard to link a podfic from archive.org and to retag and already-established fic).

I am thinking of making a second AO3 account specifically for podfics so that they don’t overwhelm my written fics; I am first and foremost, a fic writer, and secondly a podfic-er. But I’m not to the point where I feel the need to yet. I have only done 3 podfics so far and one of them is my own fic.

The purpose of my life is to tell stories, I’ve known this since I was a kid. I’m the kind of person who if I ever formally published some kind of story like a book or a TV show or a video game that I would encourage it to be pirated or free so that it would be more widely available and accessible to people and not locked behind a paywall. My allegiance is always to the story and the audience, not to my own glory or to money. And this philosophy of storytelling extends to my creation of podfics as well.

Thanks again for sharing your concerns. I’m not mad at you or anything, I just disagree on this issue. Its cool to hear from an older more experienced podfic-er who is looking out for me. There are so few podfic-ers out there that we ought to stick together. Anyways, I’m off to take a nap. Byeeee!

Two things

This post, written in response to the tag @nostalgebraist mentioned a couple of days ago, seems to have lost its way, so I hope it isn't an annoyance to anyone now.

You asked me about my most ambitious creation, and I tried to be honest. I am a man in the grip of an idea, not an artist.

I'll spare you the details. You can see the fruits of the first step on my way from here to the end. There may not be much farther to go, but I need to see to that first step.

What does it involve?

It means that the world is not a box. Things that are not boxes cannot live, can't be saved, cannot ever make room for each other. If you want to stay afloat and keep the rest of the world from tipping over into the void, there are two things you must do:

1. Accept that not all shapes are equally "good" shapes, and if you have the opportunity, make the ones you like better. Accept that you don't have to make sense any more. (And maybe do some small exercises to make sure you aren't, in fact, one of the un-shapes.)

2. Get into the habit of making new shapes and making them better. Make them into things that could live. There is no fixed "good" shape. They come and they go like waves over a still ocean, waves that might make you think you are safe if you think you've gone in far enough. There is no permanent shape, but the waves can be trusted to continue to exist, and to continue making you feel safe, for a while longer.

3. Let it end, at least for now. (This is the hardest one, but not the hardest step.)

4. Give yourself a new shape. This is a tough one, as well. But if the first three were hard, this fourth one can be impossible. Do not ask yourself what shapes are "better" than others. Try to remember what they feel like. What is it to be them? I can't promise you that you'll make the shape you want. And of course, if you can't do that, don't try to make the shape you want, either.

The point of all this is that you're still here. The waves have just begun. The shape that you make will be all the shape you'll ever need.

I don't know what you want, but I hope I can try to help.

I was trying to be more concise. My writing here is not very good.

This post would probably make sense without the image, but I like it. I'm using it to make myself feel less like a monster for trying to save the world, for wanting to change the shape of things so badly and not succeeding. The world is a lot more frightening, I guess.

I think this is where I left off last time, except that then I was saying that maybe everything is fine. And it was. It was actually very good. It felt like I understood the meaning of life after the end of the world, after the end of the wave, and there was nothing left to do but rest.

But that was before. And it's not too late to change the shape of the world. The wave can still crest and subside without crushing anyone, or anything.

And I just realized that I've got to get this out, before things get really bad again.

I'm making another change now, to the world of Floornight, so here goes.

There is no story in the world of Floornight which can be separated out and studied without destroying it. If a story is told in part, then there is a part that will forever after be an impossible-to-separate-from-the-other-parts, a story in an impossible context.

The story was told at the end of a world. But it was also a story that was part of a much longer one, told in many other parts.

Here is an example.

After an explosion in the ocean, the world of Floornight was almost entirely dark. The lights were still on, and people were still going about their lives, but not many of them. A lot of the people who hadn't managed to get through to the surface could still be seen doing their jobs in dark, gloomy environments, but others were in much darker and deadlier ones, far below the surface. It was dangerous and difficult work, that the rest of us could not see or understand.

The other end of the story was not at the surface.

It was still there, deep down. In the depths of the ocean, some of the deepest waters on the planet, the story had been going on for a very long time, and it wasn't over. It had gone on and on, long after anyone in the world above thought the story was over, or anything like the story at all. There were many different endings to this story, which could not be separated from one another. This was the story. It could not be separated into anything more, by anybody.

This wasn't just another story like a thousand others. It was the story of a world, whose surface had just been blown apart, but whose depths were the true world. This was the true world, the only one that could ever have been.

And so, after all the world's parts had been put together, after they had healed and repaired and been given a chance to grow, this was the story they told, in a story that was both itself and also part of a long one. There was a story for every single part of every single world, and there was a story which had grown from those stories, which drew on them. There was a story for the story of the story of the surface, and for each story of each story that was part of it. A story for each and every part. And a story which would never be finished, because each new part of it was part of the story that came before, which came before that, and so on, and so on, forever and ever.

How would you separate one from the other? How could you, when the world was like this? The story was in all of its parts at once, and that was how it was. There was no story which was not also a part of a larger story. You could not separate one from the other. But you could destroy it, at least as a whole.

And so, we did. We destroyed the world as a whole. We destroyed what was left of the story, the parts of the story which were stories about destruction, about the impossibility of finding a way to tell a story which was not the story of the story.

And now, we are the world. We are the story of the story of the story of the end of a world, of the story of every story that ever had a story. We can no longer be separated from our part in that.

HEY!! No idea if there’s many people who keep up with my stuff enough to notice but I haven’t been posting too much! This is because I’ve been focusing on an original story of mine called Iteration. Only once from a known troll. I think most of what I write is too niche for the majority of the fandom to have a strong enough opinion on that would make them upset enough to write hate comments

I still write some, but I’m not comfortable posting it anymore. Most of what I write is character exploration through smut or hurt/comfort. I actually ended up working out some real headcanons for Ragnor and Hypatia through the nonsense I was writing a couple of months ago that I might be able to edit into something postable eventually.

Filling in the holes canon leaves for more minor characters and relationships/friendships that happen mostly off-page, coming up with rules for how magic works, and swinging from humor into angst with no warning

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I use a word or two sometimes, but not whole sentences of dialogue. Japanese is the only second language I speak well enough to do it with, but I think throwing whole sentences of Japanese into a fic would just be jarring and confusing

“Hide the drums (there’s fire in the sky)” latest installment of the Magical Marriage Ribbons-Verse, the Untamed Mega Saga, for which the author starandrea has been posting a chapter every day since May 31st 2020, so 805 consecutive days as of now without missing ONE. It boggles the mind. (I’ve started reading when the verse was ... oh I think about three parts in, I haven’t missed one too since then)

Last song: “The Greatest Show on Earth” - Nightwish, it’s my soundtrack for my daily yoga practice (no I am in fact not joking), so it doesn’t really count last leisure listening was the soundtrack of ‘Robin Hood - Das Musical’

Last series: Ooofff... ok, so many balls in the air at the same time. I’m watching “The Sandman” of course, as you do and loving it. Also “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” which is THE MOST(tm). Recently finished my rewatch and catch-up of “Manifest” and rewatched a couple of episodes of The Devil Judge with a friend who just started and that I got into it, remembering why I can’t be normal about those boys (and how delightful it is to rewatch with someone experiencing sth for the first time). Of course went down the magnificent and batshit crazy rabbithole that is Kinnporsche. Also, “Tomorrow” which is definitely my fav K-Drama of 2022.

Last movie: Day Shift - Fun and a nice remix of vampire tropes that you don’t really see on top of each other a lot. But it felt more like a set up to a movie trilogy I don’t know if it’s made enough impact into getting, so the premise might have been served better as a mini series? ...The Gray Man, which was solid and enjoyable and absolutely bonkers with how hilarious it was to watch Chris Evans have a ton of fun playing straight up, no holds barred, unredeemable villian. Ryan Gosling can stay... Ana de Armas is queen bee.

Currently working on: My last day of vacation :sob: and of course my WIP/plot bunnie enclosure excel spreadsheet (yes, I do not do things by half until I halfass writing them). Anyway, actual words or plotty thinky thoughts were put into:

- The Devil Judge a/b/o PWP (that has, so far, about 5k of set up and no porn) with a Jung Sunah made them do it scenario and non-traditional dynamics (yeah, idek...)

- Vincenzo Inception fusion - Jang Han Seo wakes up from getting shot to a curious set up of sleeping people around him (really really wanna write this one but the premise is so vast I’m afraid of flaming out again)

- three separate 9-1-1 Buddie fics of varying size and scope that reaches from one’s in love the other isn’t and confessions make things complicated (or do they), the fall out from the truck bombing goes the other way for Buck & the “Eddie deals with his 5B-issues by discovering shibari”!AU (do NOT try this at home-therapy)

actually- I’m not done. 2 things.

1. I will not change.

I know a lot of people are socialized to see assertiveness as rudeness, and that’s truly unfortunate. I think we’d all be happier if we were taught to be assertive and expect it from others. but, we’re not. and it’s extremely frustrating to be villainized over it. I can be brusquely honest, abrupt, I can be taken as rude. but, I don’t attack. I don’t use this platform to gossip or insult or purposefully tear people down. I’ll attack arguments, and I try to be funny with it sometimes. but, even if that’s taken as rudeness- it’s is not worth treating someone like they’re dangerous. 

sometimes, it feels like people are walking on eggshells with me because they’re scared I might say something a little too cutting. I will ask- if you think you’d be emotionally-distressed as the recipient of anything I’ve ever said on this blog, don’t ever message me and consider unfollowing because I don’t plan to change my tone. I will not put up a front. I will be genuine and honest even if that comes across as rude.

2. I will not stop.

look. I’m not stupid. I know there are circles in this fandom that talk about me or complain about my tone. I’ve seen my work - my art or my research - reposted, referenced, or tagged across multiple platforms. my theories are regularly regurgitated and repackaged and I leave it alone. I’m not a ‘public figure�� but I’m aware that the username ‘ciceroprofacto’ exists in places that I don’t see. given the way people talk to me so carefully and malicious rumors that periodically seem to fly out of left field. I know people talk shit. I just ask. be skeptical. ask for proof. be skeptical if they can’t or won’t provide it.  if you really think I’ve done something messed up, tell me about it?

I don’t care what you think of me as a person. I don’t know many of my followers and even less know me. I just don’t want someone’s misgivings about me holding them back from engaging with my work. SOA and all the associated ficlets and timelines and research posts were written to be a vehicle for education about (or at least an introduction to) the revolutionary war- mostly about Washington’s direct staff- about day to day life and the characters involved, and I know for a fact that it’s had an impact on a lot of people’s interest in the subject. 

the story means a lot to me. I started working on it when I was almost 19 after waiting about 5 years to feel comfortable with my level of understanding of the time period. I was really excited to get to make it and have it take off and it’s been a source of great joy for me.  it represents the culmination of my life’s leisure-time research and creativity, and it includes influences from my experiences and the fields of my education. it’s unique because of all that, and it’s mine, and it can’t be separated from me because it’s full of my influences and philosophies and research.

I will continue to use this blog as a tool to promote the work and keep myself motivated for it. I’ve been learning to keep my personal life fairly-private so that who I am won’t influence how you experience the story, but it is mine. and I’m sorry - I’m an unkillable author.  SOA is planned out and I will continue to be the writer and if you want the story, you have to live with the fact that I’m writing it.

What’s the first fandom you can remember being a part of and would you consider yourself still a part of it? hmm y’know i was just thinkin about how involved i’ve actually been in fandoms, and i gotta say i’m pretty inactive in them (as in i don’t produce a lot of “content” for them) and tend to just enjoy the series by myself or with a friend. i consider my contributions to a fandom to be my art for it and i don’t think i post art frequently enough to really Be a member of a fandom. but i don’t mind that!

to actually answer the question though, my first was likely pokemon. specifically mystery dungeon because hero x partner videos on youtube (LMFAO) were what introduced me to deviantart, and then the ✨rest of the internet✨. i still love and draw pokemon, but i don’t think fandom culture is really for me LMAO so no i don’t– and never really have– considered myself part of any fandom.

2. What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received? Alternatively, what would make you happiest to be complimented about? omg i immediately know the answer to this. somebody once said to me, “you’re like a sunflower: tall and pretty” like WHAT!! 😭😭💖💞💘 anyway that’s when sunflowers became my favorite flower 🌻

3. Do you want to be famous? absolutely not, i wouldn’t be able to tolerate such a constant and tremendous amount of attention. but i wouldn’t mind a small following! i kinda like the idea of inspiring a small group of people... anyway it’s kinda the same reason why cult followings > giant fandoms

4. What’s something you always wished you could be good at? oof, many things. i wish i was generally more crafty (cosplay, plush-making, etc.), i wish i knew my way around some sorta weapon tbh, like archery? and i wish i was handy with tools n such. ooh and storytelling, i have a lotta doubts abt my storytelling abilities. OH and i wish i had more common sense/street smarts T_T) i’m aware a lot of these develop with practice, but like.. omg my brain is always so full, setting aside time is difficult LOL. but hopefully i’ll get to try them someday :”)

5. If you were given complete freedom to plan your dream vacation, where would you go and what would you do there? it’s nothing really unique but i just really wanna be someplace tropical in a quiet and remote area. buy fruit from local street markets, hike up scenic mountain trails. Y’know. and just fuggin paddleboard and swim and relax on the sand all day long (the coarse kind of sand that feels like a sugar scrub). also my dog has to be there with me. and it’s a permanent vacation. i will live there.

6. How did you first end up on Tumblr? an artist i’ve looked up to since.. forever left deviantart for this hellsite (affectionate), so i followed. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ now they (mostly) left for twitter, and i followed them there too, but turned tf back. we already know how abysmal twitter is. edit: and it’s really only gotten worse huh

7. What was the last piece of media you saw/read/played that left a memorable impact on you? it was probably when i decided to watch an lp of the last of us a while back. i rarely cry on the spot from any sort of narrative, but that one left me in pieces from the beginning. that was an intense game throughout so i’d say it left quite an impact on my heart ;; aggressively ignores part two edit: the show’s good tho!! i wonder if it’ll fix part two. also this art is from 2020

8. What are you looking forward to in the foreseeable future? it’s not guaranteed to happen but i’d love to move into a place with a close friend or two, and we’re all doing our best and cooking for each other and playing video games together,,, i’d really like that. edit: since writing this i’ve actually begun some moving plans with a group of friends WAAAHH i’m so excited :D we’re going to test our roommate compatibility this summer!

9. What’s a random fun fact that you’ve learned recently? my friend kinda hinted to me a while back that a part of the ancient cistern dungeon from skyward sword is based off a super cool japanese short story?? it’s called “the spider’s thread,” if you’re unfamiliar with the story and you’ve played ss, just read a synopsis of the story and it’s very clear where the inspiration comes from. this was just such a cool reference

10. What’s a piece of advice that you’ve always found useful? hmmm i can’t think of any especially profound advice to share, but the phrase “lefty loosey righty tighty” helps me remember which way to screw screws, twist a hose faucet, etc.

Considering starting The Fog Cutters over from the beginning but I’m not sure what the etiquette is for starting a fic over on AO3. Currently thinking that I should add a new chapter telling people that I’m going to start the fic over and why, but I don’t know how people feel about that kind of thing. Though I think it’s better than saying nothing.

For the record, here are my current thoughts on why I want to start the fic over:

I’m not a fan of how it’s going so far. I want to at least revise it and make it more well-rounded. (I feel like I’m focusing too much on comedy right now and I want it to just have some comedy, some serious, etc.)

I want to focus on world-building a bit more, which is something I feel the fic is lacking. Though the story takes place in an established city in the Danganronpa universe, I’m reworking the city as a “Japanamerica” type setting, so it’s not 1-to-1 with the official depiction of the city and should be treated as such.

Longer fic projects like this, in my personal opinion, benefit from the story being written in a way where you write the characters as if the reader has never heard of the character before. This is especially important in my fic because it’s a massive crossover fic, so there’s a good chance that there may actually be some characters the reader doesn’t know anything about.

I’m still not confident in my ability to write mysteries, so I want to look more into that.

I feel like I’m just hitting bullet points rather than telling a properly flowing story, which is something I need to work on in my writing in general.

Ironically I also feel like I haven’t planned the bullet points out very well either. I had a much more concrete outline with Despair Imitator and I’m mostly okay with how that turned out, and I think I need to plan this fic out a lot better too if I want it to work.

Fukawa deserved better than how I’ve written her tbh

I am also considering maybe splitting it up into separate fics that follow an overall story arc and combining them in a series. This would resolve a few problems that I’m worried about:

The new tag limit. By splitting up the arcs into separate fics I won’t have to worry as much about having too many tags per fic.

Longer fics in general can be pretty overwhelming to get into if it’s not broken up, I think. I know I sometimes see 100 chapter fics on AO3 and I get overwhelmed just looking at that, and I feel like doing it this way will make the series feel more accessible.

The arcs I have in mind are mostly episodic, so if you don’t like one arc, you probably wouldn’t miss much if you skip it (and if it’s super important to the plot as a whole I’ll probably mention that it’s an important arc in the author’s notes anyway), and it’d be easier to skip those arcs this way.

Related to the above, if I decide to add some lemon-lime to this... insert food analogy here, I feel like it’d be easier to notice and skip because you’d see a change in rating and new tags with sexy words and be like “I think I’ll go to the next one.”

So what I’m thinking of doing, if I decide to go through with this, is updating the fic with a message saying I want to start the fic over, and then when/if the new fic is ready to post I will delete the old one and start a new one. But I’d like to know if this is a good idea. Personally I would feel weird about just removing the chapters and just revising it because the hits, kudos...es, and bookmarks would reflect the old fic, not the new one. But if there’s some kind of issue like a waste of bandwidth or something that might be a problem, or if it’s just considered rude for some reason, please let me know before I make any changes.

Characterization: tips on writing characters and inspiration for making characters

Crafts: from weaving to lockpicking, if it’s a dedicated skill that you could give a character, it’ll be sorted into this tag

Children: because I don’t know how to write children :(

Crime: could conceivably be used for nefarious purposes, and likely will be in whatever story I write it in, but isn’t inherently criminal (usually)

Everything (exclusive label): that one post that fit too many and yet none of my established categories

Renfield doesn’t respect Hennessey and escapes to attack men moving boxes on a cart + a trick of the light, Seward says, makes Lucy’s canine teeth appear longer and sharper in her illness. Lucy acts differently toward the garlic flowers depending on if she’s sleeping or awake, Lucy’s throat wounds disappear, van Helsing refuses Lucy and Arthur a last kiss and Lucy is grateful. “We thought her dying whilst she slept, And sleeping when she died.”)

• 21 Sep (Lucy and her mother’s funeral formalities are attended to + van Helsing, naturally, suggests cutting off Lucy’s head + Mr. Marquand isn’t the best at condolences + Arthur cries to Seward and wishes to not be called Lord Godalming)

• 22 Sep (Mina and Jonathan go to Mr. Hawkins’s burial, and later the Count is spotted + Mina gets news of Lucy and Mrs. Westenra’s passing from a Mr. Van Helsing + Lucy and Mrs. Westenra’s burial then Quincey and Arthur depart + KING LAUGH + FINIS)

• 23 Sep (Mina is relieved Jonathan’s doing better, and she decides to read his journal from his time away)

• 29 Sep (BIG DAY OF HAPPENINGS: Quincey “Laconic” Morris + Arthur, Quincey, Van Helsing, and Dr. Seward meet tumultuously before going to observe Lucy. the observation is a horror especially to Arthur + “nosferatu” + Arthur kills Un-Dead Lucy in a terrible moment + Dr. Seward to Mina about his diary: “You see, I do not know how to pick out any particular part of the diary.” + Mina and Dr. Seward exchange their stories and Mina types Seward’s + Jonathan talks with several people to learn what happened to the Count’s cargo)

• 1 Oct (the Suitor Trio, van Helsing, and Jonathan go with Seward to meet Renfield and Jonathan is then ignored [lol] + Renfield civilly insists on his release before breaking down to try and convince Seward

+ Dracula’s home with rats and Arthur’s TINY TERRIER DOGES + Mina is tired and has queer dreams + Jonathan bribes some information from a guy + Renfield doesn’t want souls and also says, “I don't take any stock at all in such matters,” but then sets up to attract more flies

+ Arthur gets a magical time-traveling response about Count de Ville’s manor [Jonathan and Arthur meet with the person who sends the response tomorrow, 2 Oct. oops, Bram Stoker] )

• 2 Oct (Seward gives Mina a sleeping draught to help her restlessness + Jonathan finds the depite and bribes more to learn about the Count’s secound house + a reasonable laconic man is “manifestly a prig of the first water” + Jonathan goes to the Aerated Bread Company (the ABC) a man who was supposed to be watching Renfield “dozes” and then, later, Renfield is in physical peril)

• 3 Oct

(^IT’S THE DAY. IT’S THE 50 PAGE ENTRY, THE LONGEST DAY, 16,000 WORDS)

(Renfield is grievously injured, with his back broken and the right side of his body paralyzed. he talks about the night he first met Dracula, that he knew Dracula was taking Mina’s blood, and how he tried to attack Dracula. Renfield shortly after dies

+ everyone except Mina and Jonathan witnesses Dracula cursing Mina with the Vampire’s baptism -- Jonathan and Mina are in a hypnotized stupor

[+ hehe Van Helsing falls on the floor when breaking down the door]

+ Dracula burned the manuscripts about him and melted the phonograph cylinders, but fortunately Seward’s safe has another copy

+ Mina informs that Jonathan hitting Dracula with a shovel left a scar on the latter’s forehead

+ it’s agreed that everyone must know all undertakings, especially Mina

+ Mina vows she would kill herself if she finds herself possibly acting in a way that might harm those she loves, but Van Helsing urges this must not happen, or else she surely will be a tool for Dracula

+ Van Helsing discusses many of the limits of Dracula’s powers

+ Jonathan wants to stay with Mina during the day as the plan to enter one of Dracula’s properties is undertaken, but Mina insists he go, as his law knowledge maybe useful

+ Van Helsing is overexcited and insensitive about how Dracula “banqueted heavily”

+ awkward forced cheer breakfast

+ Van Helsing tries to bless Mina to protect her, but the Sacred Wafer burns and scars her forehead

+ “It was then time to start. So I said farewell to Mina, a parting which neither of us shall forget to our dying day; and we set out.

+ Van Helsing sanctifies the earth in the Carfax lair and it is made uninhabitable for Dracula

+ a locksmith opens Dracula’s Piccadilly residence for Quincey and Holmwood, the boxes of there dirt are sanctified, and then Jonathan, Seward, and Van Helsing wait for Quincey and Holmwood to either sanctify the dirt at the additional addresses they found or for Dracula to arrive

+ Seward observes that Jonathan appears to have greatly aged in the single night

• 26 Oct (Czarina Catherine no longer reported, but there are patches of fog)

• 27 Oct (still no news of the ship, altho Mina’s report has changed to say “the waves are very faint”)

• 28 Oct (Czarina Catherine reported + MINA IS THE TRAIN FIEND + Arthur is surprised they can’t Uber a train + Van Helsing refers to his friend Hans Andersen and talks about duck-thoughts, swan-thoughts, child-thoughts, and man-thoughts + THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP UNSELFISHNESS)

• 29 Oct (the group is taking a train from Varna to Galatz + last night, Mina needed more prodding under hypnosis and then “raised both her hands, palms upwards, as if lifting a weight.” + then she offered tea + her sunset report has changed)

• 30 Oct (LONG EVENTFUL DAY, BUT NOT AS LONG AS OCTOBER 3. Mina answers quickly under hypnotism, then cuts off and pales before waking + Quincey only speaks English and thus stays behind with Mina

+ Van Helsing, Seward, and Jonathan are aided by Mackenzie and Steinkoff [per Arthur's telegraph] and let onboard the Czarina Catherine, which "never had so favourable a run." + the CC's captain [more sailor accent!] further reports the Romanian crewmembers wanted to "heave overboard a big box" and that, in the morning, a man came aboard to receive a box marked for Count Dracula. the captain gives the name Immanuel Hildesheim and Hildesheim's address

+ fez! + Hildesheim sends the group to one Skinsky, whose body was found in the wall of St. Peter's churchyard, throat torn open

+ JONATHAN IS RELEASED FROM HIS PROMISE TO KEEP INFO FROM MINA

+ Quincey gets Mina a “Traveller’s” typewriter and Seward needs to continue writing his journal entries by hand lol

+ Mina shares a clever memo in which she figures out Dracula’s plan and Jonathan finds that super hot and Van Helsing calls her their teacher

+ Arthur and Jonathan plan to follow Dracula by steamboat [Arthur is an “experienced hand” at working a steamboat]; Quincey with Seward to follow by horse; Van Helsing and Mina also to follow by horse

+ Jonathan is wracked with memories of Castle Dracula and of Mina’s predicament. “Have you felt the Vampire’s lips upon your throat?”

NOVEMBER (NEARING THE END!!)

• 1 Nov (Jonathan and Arthur pretend to be Romanian authorities, and they get news that a large boat going unusually fast has gone by + Dr. Van Helsing is laconic + Mina can’t abide garlic and calls the locals superstitious)

• 2 Nov (Jonathan was allowed to sleep because he was so exhausted [thank you, Art] + Seward, Quincey, Mina, and van Helsing are busy traveling + Mina frets about her unholy uncleanliness)

• 3 Nov (short entry: Seward hears at Fundu that ship has gone up the Biztritza. and Russian Fashion!)

• 4 Nov (Art is an amateur fitter. ...he wrecked the boat + Mina is chipper and tells van Helsing she’s already eaten. Van Helsing is afraid, afraid, afraid!) 

• 5 Nov (Mina again doesn’t eat, and van Helsing and she sit in a circle surrounded by communion wafers as the vampire women taunt Mina. Van Helsing’s and Mina’s horses freeze to death + Seward sees the Romani troupe conveying Dracula + Van Helsing enters Dracula’s castle and kills the vampire women)

• 6 Nov (Mina and van Helsing watch the final showdown through binoculars, Jonathan scares the Romani with his angry anime aura, and two people die)

• 7 Nov (SEVEN YEARS LATER. Art and Seward get married [to each other, naturally, definitely], Mina and Jonathan have a son named after their vampire hunting group, Jonathan still has to focus on praising Mina)

I will always rant about every member of the disaster lineage but I just got very very especially sad about Dooku and Qui-Gon.

I feel like Anakin really does Not know how to Handle Child at the time of that first training montage. he does his best to be a good teacher and train her the best he can but I definitely got scary chills watching him say “again” so many times in a progressively darker tone

I’m fine I’m just crying over how all that training, no matter Anakin’s downfalls, saved Ahsoka’s life in the end

my first reaction to Rex mentioning Jesse was basically just “oh hey it’s my dude!!!” and then I realised that Anakin and Jesse both trained Ahsoka in ways that she then used to survive their attempts of trying to kill her and now I’m not okay

no because the fact that Ahsoka would have been chased down and possibly killed by the Empire if they found out she was still alive but she went to Padmé’s funeral anyway to pay her respects because Padmé was so important to her-

Rex sticking with Ahsoka until after the funeral makes me have a lot of emotions and a lot of thoughts; iirc we don’t actually know how long they were together after the Tribunal crash before they split ways

anyone else feel a little iffy about the whole “we have a duty thing” he was saying to Ahsoka? maybe I just wasn’t paying enough attention, but it felt a little to me like he meant she had to/was obligated to join the Rebellion. it doesn’t seem very in sync with Bail in general, but if someone has a different interpretation that makes more sense, please share with me.

the only other thing is I’m just confused and a little irritated about the section with the farmers and the Inquisitor. like, when in the timeline exactly did that whole encounter take place? and if they wanted to show a storyline like that, why didn’t they just animate some key moments from the Ahsoka novel? I feel like it sort of gives it more weight in a way to have Ahsoka’s big return to the good fight and the Rebellion set two years after the end of the war, and given how similar the setups are, I have to say I would have much rather had at least some scenes from the book in animation than a whole new separate thing that kind of replaces it.
