I have to preface this by saying that I don't even work on art every day, much less comics. Last October I picked up knitting on a whim and spent all my free time making hats while listening to an audiobook of Moby-Dick. I made a lino print for the first time while sending out JW #1, fell in love with it, and have spent the last month or so carving and printing and experimenting. I go on painting jags, collage jags, writing jags, and I have two (2) guitars that are sitting in the corner patiently waiting for asteroid Kiana to circle back to them. I've been this way my whole life, and I am trying to work with it and not against it. HOWEVER. There is a hardcore Type A perfectionist inside me that wants nothing but consistency. This part of me abhors the flightiness, the mutations, the bouts of melancholy -- if there must be a Quest, it cries, let it be towards a singular Goal!!!!

For recovering perfectionists there really is no better teacher than Lynda Barry. She has a list of materials, she has dozens of exercises, she has you set time limits. According to her books she is quite a strict teacher in-class, demanding a lot of time, effort, care, and attention. All of this is wonderful. She boxes you in and sets you free.

"Making Comics" is the essential text. My favorite exercise is Monster Jam.

Here are a few of mine, all done left-handed to minimize the influence of the Type A chatter who lives in my brain. I have dozens and dozens of pages of these monsters. Barry recommends this specific process a lot: lay down the lines under pressure before your brain can catch up, then add color/patterns/details, under no pressure at all, while watching/listening to something you like.

There are several iterations after this - you draw their parents, an older sibling, a lover. Then you go back to the beginning and draw, in 6 panels, the story of their life. It somehow always presents itself.

As valuable as they are, I don't use these exercises to actually make comics nowadays. I use them to loosen up and activate that aforementioned feeling. Most of my comics come from doodles or notes scribbled down in a tiny notebook I carry everywhere. The process of making a longform comic is something I have bashed my head against for YEARS, and now involves divination, random image generation, a deck of Nancy cards, a lightbox, and a ton of panels chopped up and spread out on the floor so I can move them around. This is why I still only work in grids!

Review for a DID… plushie?

Today I’m doing a very basic and important review on Plushie Dreadful’s Dissociative Identity Disorder Bunny

Which I bought because isnt it cute! Also I just had to, a bunny with DID? Sounds familiar.. 🤔

~initial thoughts~

I think you and I must be thinking the same: what an absurd thing to buy! A plush based off a trauma disorder? This could be offensive even if its coming from a weird place of stigmatizing disorders

I looked a little into the company though and found that they make a lot of different disorder-based plushies, as well as based on chronic illnesses and queer identities.

There’s also this note on the DID bunny page itself:

That's why our design team only creates plushies related to mental health issues with which they have direct experience. Obviously they go through a lot of widespread effort to have people with personal experience weigh in on their plush designs. Is it going to be suited to every person w a CDD’s tastes? Absolutely not, but I personally think they put a lot of care into it.

Heres some pics of the one I bought:

Its a fluffy white rabbit plush with wide, white eyes, and a grey bunny appliqué on the forehead. There’s the interlocking circles multiplicity pride symbol on the tummy. The arms are all white with grey paws, and the stubby legs are all white with pink paw pads. In the ears there’s soft fabric with the printed image of three bunnies stacked on top of eachother that are dark grey, reddish pink and white respectively. There’s a tote bag underneath the bunny plush with a design that matches the ears.

I think the plush design conveys the feelings of DID very well, actually. White eyes that could perhaps symbolize dissociating or looking frozen in terror. Black and red together are commonly associated with pain and trauma in art. White might be for the parts untouched by trauma, or healed.

Their Trauma Bunny

Its a grey rabbit plush thats small and has uneven limbs and ears. There are two red x’s on the tummy, a black x for the mouth, and downturned eyes depicting a pained expression.

Since this trauma bunny is literally stitched to the forehead if the DID bunny, it’s almost as if to say that trauma is a central feature of the DID itself; which I thought was a nice careful touch that could’ve easily been ignored and focused instead on the multiplicity aspect.

There’s obviously a lot of care and attention to detail put into this bunbun and I very much appreciate it

~How the Bun feels~

Texture: the main fur Soft with medium length, dense fur. It feels closer to the stuffed animals I had as a kid, compared to the super-soft and eventually pilly fur you get on buildabears and jellycat bashful bunnies. Only time will tell of course.

The fur on the ears is very soft with short, printed-on designs. I think its close to something like minky fabric, but shorter and thinner

Weight: idk, it doesn’t have any beanies in it so it’s lighter than I thought it would be. The ears don’t have stuffing/very little stuffing in them so they’re pretty weightless and floppy. Something I really like in bunny ears actually.

Ratings for…:

Playing with(moving the joints): 9/10 (the sewing is such that the arms and megs move easily yay!)

Holding the hand/paw of: 6/10 (the paws are a little small for me, the arms a little stubby for holding hands)

Sitting: 10/10 (the ears help it sit up on its own, the legs fold nicely and look very cute)

Standing: 3/10 (doesnt stand up very well)

Holding the ear of: 11/10 (super softie)

Holding like a hamburger: 9/10 (a smidge small but otherwise pleasent)

Snuggles against the chest: 8/10

Squishability: 5/10 (not a squishable but a very even amount of squishy and dense)

Appliqué: 10/10 (very neat stitching, unobtrusive)

Fur shedding: 10/10 (seems like its very stable and theres no shedding)

~ Extra thoughts idk what to do with~

- I don’t know the history of the interlocking circles symbol or if its problematic in any way. I’m assuming its something the community decided on when contributing feedback on the initial design. Thoughts? It seems to have to do with the old DID forums from a time before I knew I had DID, so I’m intrigued by the history

- I don’t personally mind that theres a DID-themed plush out there. Might not be everyone’s cuppa tea but it makes me happy to have a little soft companion for watching movies and reading books with. Its a really neat aspect to my growing DID collection :D

- I’m so fond of the scenecore kinda design for these bunnies. As a kid I desprately wanted a bunny with that gothic lolita, stitched up aesthetic and this is just so cool and special to me now :>

- I’m super sorry if the image descriptions arent great! This is a personal just-for-fun blog so I dont think I can manage something like that for all my reviews, but since this ones very visual I thought I’d try. Doing an Amazon print on demand for BILY would be so cool! I would love to have BILY physically in my home. Taking in consideration how long the story is, how many books do you think it would make?

ideally i'd love to fit it all in one book HOWEVER- amazon limits to 800 pages- it would be a streach but i'd hope to get it into two or maybe three. idk maybe i'd do more options for people that wanted it split up differently. it would probably end up being expensiveee that way. i've toyed with how i would split it up before- and there are two possibilities- one with alot of books and one with only a few.

the one with alot of books is mainly chapters 1-11 (book one, beggining up until the m/c and hobi are at the train station, 12-28 (book 2, them forming their truce to the bulk of the m'/c's exploration into bdsm and the start of tae's arc) 29-39 (book 3, what would affectionatly be called vmin's book because it's like- 90% them). 40-56 (book 4, namjoon's rut, hobi and the m/c first kiss all the way up until they find the body at the beach), 56-69 (book 5, all the mafia parts of the series coming to fruition) 70-end ( book 6, the sweet afterstory and epilouges) this would be 6 books, i have some idea's for title names like; the god of bugs and fish for book 4 and 'hungry little things' for book 2, and of course before i leave you for book one!

the one with a few books would be 1-25 or the begining to the hospital scenes roughly 265k words, 26-56 or from the time tae and the m/c get drunk to when they find the dead body, and then 56- finish!

Also another idea that might be applicable to people who don’t want all the books is to just like- do your favorite chapters and I could list it as “name’s edition” provided the word count was under like 400k (roughly like 20 chapters)

Cardfight Vanguard Rant because I want to love this series so bad but life apparently doesn't want me to.

For reference I live in Ireland for some geographical context.

I feel like cardfight vanguard is one of the hardest shit to get into without spending like a lot of money on it unless I'm just being dumb which I hope is the case honestly cuz I love this series.

Like I spent over an hour looking for somewhere to read the original manga and I can't find anywhere that has above the 5th chapter translated which doesn't make any sense because there's an official translated print of the manga which I can still buy but I don't have 120 euro to drop on a manga series rn lol.

Also like I know bushiroad is struggling as a company but who was gonna tell me they closed the servers for vanguard zero last year????? Now there's no mobile game coverage for the series at all which I feel like is a big blow to people that might not have a huge vanguard community to play with as that was probably their only way to get some acc playtime in. Now there is the overdress game which I do actually really wanna get some time but it's like 80 euros and that's not amount I can jus pull out of my ass either.

Having the anime for overdress readily available on YouTube is huge honestly and probably a big part of why I haven't dropped the series yet as a whole lmao so that's great but I feel like that's the only good thing theyve done for it in the last while.

Now idk I could be wrong I know vanguard has never been a popular card game in my area it's always struggled none of my local card shops stock vanguard anymore (which again adds to the cost as I need to outsource all my cards) and I haven't met a single soul id be able to play with around here but if other people's experience with it is different I'd love to hear it.

Vanguard is a series that's always had a very permanent place in my heart I still remember being at my freinds house and stumbling onto the series by accident while doom scrolling through crunchy roll trying to find something to watch and immediately fell in love with the series, i still have all my original starter decks which are probably extremely obsolete now lmao but I love looking at them all the same. Out of the new products I have the danji starter deck for overdress I love the vibes of dark states. But yeah if anyone has tips on how to get more into the scene or has had a similar experience with it id love to talk about it and make some friends who're also into vanguard! Gonna be honest my limit of vanguard above base level is really limited because of the on and offness with which I approached the series for the above reasons but I wanna COMMMITTTT I WANNA LEARNNNNN. Or even if I'm just doing stuff wrong and looking in the wrong places like pls let me know.

A brief analysis of the magic tricks in cat

quick disclaimer I have not done magic in years and never did anything that advanced so my knowledge on the subject is limited this is not a how to the tricks this an analysis of the tricks.

First trick! Making a ring disappear this is i’m 90% sure impossible! :)

making rings disappear is pretty common and before rings magicians used fumbles but with that you usually have a cloth to assist or you put the ring on one hand pretend to move it to another but really its still in the first!

the only way I can think of is that he slipped the ring up his sleeve here

and then the dove idk anyway to make that work the ring is feasible but the dove?

I think the ring pretty clearly represents marriage were as the dove represents love so through lies turning marriage into love / making marriage disappear and turning it into / replacing it with love

I think this trick represents kazui telling hinako about not loving her / him lying about loving her the ring/marriage fall from his mouth like how we use our mouths to speak and he uses his magic/deception to make the marriage/ring disappear

Moving out of order briefly lets look at this shot there is lots of magic equipment in the ground

Cards! Cards are used for a variety of tricks you’ve probably heard of pick a card any card but don’t show me , take a card from the top shuffle the deck and I’ll find it , making cards disappear reappear , change suits and or numbers , you might have seen the episode of X factor were one of the judges drew a card from a shuffled and magian had the card printed on his shirt. Cards are used in all levels of magic and are pretty much always slight of hand/misdirection/prediction card tricks are some of the most beginner friendly though I can’t think of any tricks that only use one card like are depicted here usually you need a deck or a few other cards to make a hand.

wand! Wands are very traditionally magic well all of these are , wands can be used for again the verity of things though they are associated with hat tricks , making things appear from in side the hat (the way I did this personally was using a slit and compartment in the back of the hat and sometimes a hand puppet but there are many ways to do hat tricks)

as fun as puppet symbolism is I doubt this method was on the mind of the mv team or they would have included a puppet or hat

wands can be used for misdirection and moving your audiences attention to somewear.

another trick you might if heard if is what often referred to as the pencil trick were you pinch the end of a pencil and shake it so it appears to be wobbly you can also do this trick with a wand the reason I mention it is these tricks (apart from the maybe spoons) are all beginner friendly and wobbly pencil or wand in this case is about as beginner friendly as you can get.

Going on more about common tricks flowers in a wand a trick well publicised by tv producing a bouquet from a wand , bouquets are associated with lovers.

coins are again used in loads of tricks lots of one’s involving hands and misdirection theres a trick that swaps a ring and coin between your left and right hands , coins have to sides two them (two sides to a relationship? To faced), theres a trick where you make a coin disappear through a table. you place a coin on the table slam you hand down on the table on top (like your forcing the coins through the table) then you sweep the coin of the table but make it look your just pulling your hand off the table

spoons! Spoon bending is a super popular trick and though bending spoons with your mind isn’t beginner friendly (kinda breaking the pattern) there is a beginner alternative

Where you use you hands to make people think you have bent the spoon

string! The only trick I can think of is the disappearing knot

all of these are hand tricks (typically) , deception and redirection tricks and like mentioned prior they are all popular and beginner friendly

As for the card its a ace of spades , ace before being used for playing cards was for the one side of a dice and hence has associations with bad luck. The spade is very similar to the heart which is the holy grail and the card being a one could be a reference to a one sided relationship

ace can be either one of the highest or lowest card’s depending on what you play.

This is a trick wear you use you fingers to manoeuvre the ring to the fold of your hand so it looks like its disappeared

anywayyyyyyy most of them prob have secret identities and dont wanna be public (for various reasons) but miko would definitely just tell everyone who she is.. kusuo would constantly be having to protect her from stalkers and the like when shes just trying to live her life

kokomi prob tried to be secret at first just to prevent having MORE stalkers and general crazy people surrounding her every day life, but she would def be the first person to be exposed by the public because.. well, the media would be OBSESSED with her but also, shes just really obvious and doesnt realize shes not being subtle at all.. prob has all her long blue hair out of her suit and everything.. eventually she prob decided against having a mask at all (or just having one around her eyes) cuz being pretty and perfect adds to her whole thing

kusuo is pissed at both of them cuz he seriously cant handle hanging out with them in public now.. like if it was bad before, its terrible now

alsooo i was thinking about whether or not all his friends knew each others secret identities from the start or not and i started considering like if they didnt at first, yumehara would have a crush on kaido or the jet black widow and i was thinking theyd team up or something and she'd be like ugh i cant crush on this guy, i have kaido !!! and then i realized, this is just miraculous, i was making yumekai miraculous 😭😭

is kusuke a supervillain? ehhhh, probably nottt, he'd prob be similar to how he is in canon.. jealous and obsessive over his brother but doesnt really care about anything or anyone else enough to really be evil, he prob creates crazy supervillain esque tech that could rival the heroes easily but only uses it in private against kusuo cuz he wants to prove he can beat him.. kusuo comes back from his brothers place absolutely BATTERED and bloody and the others are like "?!?!? did u battle someone and not tell us???" and hes like nah i was just hanging out with my brother

just a thought!! i didnt do everyone but with some of the others, i wasnt sure whether i would want them to be spider people in this au or not, like maybe theyd have some other role ?? would not be opposed to it though if anyone else has ideas for it or if i think of something..

I fucking hate limited print umas. Like I understand artificial scarcity and all that shit but if you spend hours making something just to only let 20 or 30 people get it then retire it forever, what is the point of that? If you just kept it available, you'd continue making money off it and people who weren't active at the time of it's initial runs can still get it and might even order from you in the future. Idk man, limited print runs are stupid.

Hella how did you get your first job because the embarrassment of telling everywhere i apply to that i have no experience is getting too much

oof it's kinda hard bc employability ranges so wildly depending on what job you're applying for so idk where to really start with this bc in the grand scheme of things my experience is very limited (have only ever had waitressing jobs so the way i apply won't be helpful if you're trying to be like. a sparky or smthn). also depends on how old you are and stuff. some general things though! if anyone gives you shit for not having experience, they're the problem not you. and i dont mean 'gives you shit' as in 'wont give you the job' bc unfortunately that's just how it is a lot of the time, but if they actively make you feel shitty for having no experience then that's when they're just being a dickhead. it might feel embarassing that you have no experience, but literally every single person in the working world has been in that boat at some point. the people INTERVIEWING you will have been in that boat. if they don't meet it with empathy then they're likely to be a crap employer anyway.

the way i got my first job was the old-fashioned way which i still do nowadays if im desperate (aka my lazy indeed.com methods have proven fruitless) which is to literally print off my CV (or resume or whatever you call it where you're from) and carry around like 20 of them and then just. go around the area. i literally just hand my CV to every cafe and restaurant whether they were hiring or not and give them my CV, bc not only then do they get a look at you and can see if your people skills are good (mine are my main skill hence why this method is so effective for me), but having a physical copy of your CV means sometimes they'll keep them on file for when they ARE hiring (not all the time, im under no illusion that some of them just chuck it the moment i leave). it's safer than getting lost in a pile of emails and online applicants. it's also kinda fun, like i make a whole day of it and you really become quite numb to the conversational side of it after a couple stops. it's worked for me every time and ive had four jobs now in four years.

Hi so long story short shipping jesslupe and the way its made me imagine my butch4butch dreams for the first time is making me realize i for sure want to get sober bc ive been numbing out bc i haven’t been being myself and i wanna explore being my #trueself while im actually mentally present for it but addiction is a thing sooooooo im going to rehab later this week

And i decided im gonna become a contributing fandom member fucking finally while im there lol

My resources are limited i will not have internet access for a while

But theres still so much i can do music, writing, art stuffs

So im gonna keep a running list of things i wanna try to work on while im there and im posting it to hold myself accountable

Plus representation fucking matters and my story as a jewish queerio child of queer mamas and person who’s been put away in the psych system and stuff like that is super valid and matters

Idk im rly nervous about going to rehab sorry im being a nerd lol just tryna psych myself up

But some things i would looove to work on are:

-drawings! And paintings! I rly just wanna try to art, i need to find pics probably and print them out for reference bc i wont have internet there lmfao *shows up to rehab with a giant stack of pictures of girls playing baseball nbd*

-a fantasy au fic! Idk what yet maybe crossover maybe just witchy vibes but something spoopy and fun :))

-a fic with a song in it that im gonna write that one if them writes about the other in the ficverse NOBODY CAN STOP ME FROM BEING THE EMO BITCH I AM DEEP DOWN🖤

-i kind of want to write a fic about them meeting in a psychiatric setting is that so fucked???😬 like i dont wanna inflict that on u all but i feel like it could be rly healing to write idk if i will publish this one lol

-fic where someone is coaching someone else on how to flirt with girls, with the obvious undercurrent that they are both in fact girls and so maybe theyre actually just flirting with each other? this is inspired by my bff and ex who i was talking with the other day and had this dynamic with and we were laughing about it and i was like lmao im writing a jesslupe fic about this so now i have to so i can show her😊

you know, this guy? substory character from yakuza kiwami 2, who gets kiryu to model for his photos? i am committed to loving him.

first things first i think he deserves to be a bear, big fat and hairy. not any less strong, just bigger and softer. idk i think his model looks awkward as a chiselled beefcake, lmao

continuing on that, i think he's historically been (sometimes still is) very self conscious. he isn't always so… underdressed, but when he is it's him trying to make a statement about his confidence and pride. i think his taste in fashion is a little tacky, talking like floral print buttoned shirts (that he doesn't button up) and simple shorts. though he also has a soft spot for his kimono and traditional wear :)

concerning his art: he highlights specifically men (as we know) but generally not limited to any one body type. some shoots/themes require certain looks and expertise (like the one kiryu shows up for) but men of all sorts feature in his broader art. occasionally his models prefer to be anonymous; one such is actually his assistant mimura. the limitation of not showing faces is very fun to him; conveniently placed props, creative angles, a bit of editing magic.

as for why? so yeah, he is gay, and that plays a big part in why. though it's not "he wants a personal wank bank" as some people are quick to judge - rather he wants other men to see beauty and pride in themselves, however they look, to see themselves the way he does. so he makes it a point not to edit things that others might try and hide; he'll let his models cover things (though mostly for anonymity) but he won't go in and paint anything over.

i also think he has autism, and he can be socially awkward, not to mention rigid. he's trying lmao, but i think that's why he lashes out when kiryu says not to use his photos in a contest. they do genuinely make up though, and as per my fic, when he opens an online gallery to showcase his photos, kiryu is happy to share it with his friends (ie the gay scene in kamurocho haha)

so uhhhh in conclusion i love him and now you do too… right?? (´･ω･`)

Girl?? We wanted a chapter, not a whole banquet! Hehehe jokes apart, I just finished (and I wasn't the only one who finished today cof cof) reading the chapter and I have to say man, have to say so many things.

First, you said this chapter would be just 🌶️.5, and I know it might be because of my virgin ass, but the chapter was a pretty 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ to me. And as much as it makes me happy, that makes me embarrased now bc I'm feeling like a little kid that searched for two people kissing on google and he thought it was porn😂😂 how do people think that what happened in this chapter was just 🌶️.5? Felt like I was on a brothel. Anyways.

So, I never thought they would start to have a thing this feast, and I'm loving it, because even if it's fast, doesn't feel forced at all. You write the guilt and their feelings for each other in such a lovely way. Like: he doesn't wanna stay in the same room with her but is already seeing red when she talks with another boy, doesn't wanna give in to her desires but can't help to feel his own when he goes to her house and see his girl in his shirt. With his last name written on it like he owns the girl who is wearing.

I'm happy they're being a thing and now he's willing to be at her side, see her more often. And I really hope their little secret goes smooth because I'm feeling like everything is risky at this story. Idk man, just Lil tomtom boy is getting his brother's tense feeling, maria sensing the akwardness... Feels risky. And jesse gave off a pretty observer person vibe in his first scene in Maria's house. Like he's always watching everything and everyone. Also, her house is above the clinic. I mean... Anways, I hope I'm just being paranoic. Bye.

Bless you, Nonnie, you’re so sweet and adorable - I think my definition of spice might differ from others, maybe I’ve just read a lot (too much?) and think a 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ rating is well beyond the limits of my skill set - I’ve been writing since I was 15/16 and this past year is the first time in all those years I’ve posted anything that even remotely resembles 🌶️ writing. Maybe I just don’t have the confidence in my writing to label it what y’all see it as - a brothel, Nonnie, you need a time out 😉

Did it seem fast? Six-ish months? Yeah - compared to other stories where they’ve known each other for years, and then the build up; here they met in December and Joel came back in June after being gone several months. I guess there difference is that there was only this, never any other platonic relationship - even though Joel pushed it away and pushed her away for all those months.

So, you’re starting to see just how many people might be looking their way, right? Tommy and Maria are very protective of Ellie. Dina is Ellie’s new bestie, and where Dina goes, Jesse isn’t far behind, and he’s not too fond of Ellie because she has Tommy���s attention. Kenny is charmed by her and won’t be too thrilled when her attention is pulled away by Joel. It’s a mess, too many nosy people wandering around this small town.

I wonder who else might be watching… 🧐🧐

Mama Bear is taking a short break - probably until next Wednesday, then get back to working on chapter 7 and D&C part 9 - we’ll see who gets attention first!
