Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight: Mike, Lu & Og- “Whole Lotta Shakin’”

Mike, Lu & Og is not many people’s favorite Cartoon Cartoon, let alone CN original, but the series does have its fans, and I’d be lying if I said that I don’t still find it charming even if it is a little less adult friendly than its contemporaries.

In this one, the island’s legendarily quiet volcano is showing signs of activity for the first time in ages, which excites the islanders, but scares the bejesus out of Mike, who is NOT used to this scenario. Lancelot the turtle is also not a fan, and we’ll see him congregate with his animal companions to scheme something.

The thing that either turns people on or off from Mike, Lu & Og is how intentionally lethargic it is. There are stories and action, but the show often takes its time to get there and instead focuses on character. This is no exception, with a solid chunk of the material relying on how the characters react to the volcano and its activity, I do think that it’s kind of cute, but I do have a problem here- most of the characters are two-dimensional at best, which makes their interactions and personalities feel somewhat limited. But that may also be due to the show only running for two seasons- the earliest episodes of, say, Ed, Edd n’ Eddy also had limited character development outside of the Eds. I do think that by season 2, all of the characters were showing their shades, but Mike, Lu & Og felt kind of stagnant by that point from what I’ve seen. This is good for a first season episode, but I would hope for more if we were in, say, season 3.
