on one hand it's good that therapy has become more socially acceptable and accessible than ever, on the other, i feel like it's lead to a societal expectation of everyone:

being able to afford therapy

behaving in a completely measured, "healthy" way 24/7

and if you violate either of these and "act out" or communicate (or don't communicate at all!) in a way that isn't completely therapized, sanitized, and clean— then suddenly you're labeled as being "toxic" or, heaven forbid, an abuser. every slipup is a "red flag"

i honestly think this kind of behavior is pretty selfish, and i think that there's a lack of understanding that as humans we are not perfect, and are BOUND to fuck up. things won't always be perfectly communicated and healthy. and severely punishing someone the second they don't act perfect is both ableist and generally a shitty thing to do.

(also....like...fundamentally misunderstanding the whole point of therapy. the point of therapy is to improve YOURSELF and your own life and feelings, not to police everyone else's very human behaviors and feelings)

Okay so. There has been a huge resurgence of House MD recently here and I find this both fascinating and a bit whiplash-y because I have a very particular relationship with that show and there’s no way to explain it without outing myself for doing a very weird thing lmao but here we go

So I watched the show when it was airing and I liked it. I was never in a fandom for it cause I was a teenager for most of it, I was still figuring out my own sexuality and had no idea why I kept being drawn to shows where there’s really messy homoerotic relationship bait, and I just liked the show (and was extremely attached to Thirteen lmao). I knew some people who liked it too but in a more typical ‘this is a show I like’ way. I had no idea it had such a fandom following at all

And the second piece to this is I have struggled with insomnia my entire life (I probably have a circadian rhythm disorder), and the important part for this explanation is I can’t sleep in complete darkness or silence. So I watch something. But it has to be the right something - too interesting and I watch it and stay awake too long, too boring and I end up not being able to relax

So to fix this problem: I used a show I liked, but have seen a lot. I picked House MD and I’ve been doing it ever since because it works and has continued to work and I don’t want to lose sleep by messing with my system

The thing is, I started doing this in high school. My late teens. I’m now in my early 30s. I have been falling asleep to House for over a decade lmfao. I still like the show, but I’ve seen it so much that I know the plot and sometimes diagnosis in most episodes (there are a few I don’t watch, the emotional ones that are too much, and the ones last on the discs [yes I am still using the same dvds I bought over a decade ago, they still work great] I don’t see as often simply cause I’m usually asleep before then)

So to suddenly discover my nightly sleepy time show that I only ever knew a few people who liked and mostly watched with my mother back in the day actually has a massive fandom following (which I should have known lmfao like come on it’s absolutely ripe for it, I just never made the connection) that is suddenly active again feels a lot like a bunch of people just showed up in my bedroom and it’s so weird skskdjsk

All of these women were empowered by Thecla, a woman who did things that not many women would ever dare to do

In Spanish-speaking countries, she is also facetiously counted as the patron saint of computers and Internet, from the homophony with the Spanish and Catalan word tecla ("key").[citation needed]

one of the reasons i think i find myself internally pushing back pretty hard against the (relatively... understandable??) knee jerk reaction by particularly white women in fandom to people 'babygirlifying' male characters in media, holding headcanons that make 'canonically' male characters lesbians being "or you could just like actual women/lesbians in game/movie/etc" is because. well. it is easier for someone who does see themselves shown -- for better or for worse! -- regularly in media to say "just like these characters that are given". to a white woman, it is easy to find characters to relate to. how women of any race or sexuality are treated in stories notwithstanding, white women are the most popular depiction of womanhood in media. i, a Black trans butch lesbian, do not see myself in white womanhood. i do not connect with or identify with these characters.

in terms of fallout: i identify more with X6 and Preston than i do Piper or Cait. i connected more with Ulysses, a Black man of indeterminate, undescribed sexuality than Veronica, a racially ambiguous lesbian. in games as a whole i will often identify more with and connect to dehumanized and fantasy-racialized nonhuman characters that are (again, for better or for worse lmfao) Black-coded than i do white women characters. and i think this comes from this idea that a lot of white people just like. dont get?? not by any fault of their own, theyve just never experienced it -- but before anything, before my neurodivergence, my queerness, even my touch and go connection to the concept of womanhood, i am Black. that is the immediate thing people in the world see when looking at any Black person before anything else. and so Black stories and Black-coded stories, gendered or otherwise, appeal to me far more than the predominant face of white femininity and sexuality in media.

this doesnt mean that Black womens' stories dont exist or arent worthwhile, or arent things that i connect to -- again, if the option exists between a straight Black woman or a queer white woman in a movie or book, ive pretty much always been more connected to the Black woman. but in the media i tend to talk about on tumblr, at least, there is little if any genuine Representation™️ of Black women. mostly thats because gaming is a fucking hellscape LMFAO but we all know that. ion need to write a whole essay i literally just shared a video about it🥴🥴🥴

Ngl I get super annoyed if someone makes a post unrebloggable not because it got horribly misinterpreted or because it was a personal thing that wasn’t supposed to spread or because it got hateful assholes on it, but solely because it got popular, especially if it’s still under 10k notes. So I have someone’s lost cat. I know which apartment they belong to but the person isn’t answering and augh. Guy who lives in the same building is going to try to reach them and give them my number. I also left a note with the food/blanket/litter they left out to lure the cat back and tried the intercom, which let me leave a voicemail on their phone. Hoping they call soon so I can give the little guy back. Poor thing was out in the storm we had last night :(
