Word Prompt for Week of 04/23-29
Mishpocha: (Yiddish) the entire family network of relatives by blood or marriage (and sometimes close friends)
Style: 2nd person, present, slice of life
Word Count: 250
Artist Vibe: Septober
Life has a funny way of creating opportunities. Sometimes, it can be cruel, harsh even. Other times, it gives wonderous things beyond comprehension.
Your favorite song is playing on the car radio as your best friend sings along (badly and out of key, but you have never minded) and gently taps the steering wheel in time. A friend from the back seat -the newest addition to your little mishpocha- are joins the chorus. All three of you are laughing at the impromptu karaoke as you wend your way through the mountain road. What awaits you at the end of the journey isn't important. At least, it isn't as important as this moment.
Life is good.
And you deserve it. You don't think of the hardships you've gone through or the mundane life of responsibilities that waits for you to return. You let the content feeling seep into your bones, let it settle into your chest to warm you from the inside. You know that you will cherish this memory, even if life takes you away from these people. Even if it fades with time, it's precious. No. Priceless. Somehow, you know they will think back just as fondly years from now. Regardless of if you all part on good terms or not.
No sad thoughts about the ending of things, though. You stay present in the moment and sing even louder with the joy these friends have given you.
Life has a funny way of creating wonderous things to cherish.

I don’t expect a response. I just wanted to wish you a happy, sweet, and healthy new year. According to 23andMe, if you are the same Neil Gaiman who has no social media but did a DNA test, we’re very distant cousins. So L’shana Tovah and welcome to the mishpocha!
Thank you! At this point via the mysteries of 23andme and Ancestry.com, I have learned that I appear to share about 1% of my DNA with most Ashkenazi Jews who were at some point or other from Eastern Europe. L'Shana Tovah to everyone out there, distant family or not, and have a sweet year.

For my mishpocha who are counting. I wanted to share this with you this year, as we wander the desert back to the place that our souls first met and have always been.
Thank you for supporting my work!

text reads:
The Omer is counted every nightfall starting the 2nd night of Passover until the night before Shavuot (marking when we received the Torah). This yearly cycle of counting lasts 49 days and every nightfall has its own opportunity for reflection.
Each of the 7 weeks has its own focus and each of the 7 days within each week has its own focus within that focus.
During Sefirat Ha'Omer, we are invited on a mystical journey, a journey that spirals us deeper and deeper into discovering what exists within our psyches and souls...
Tonight's focus is chesed within chesed. Lovingkindness within lovingkindness.
Chesed is a word without direct English equivalent but is often translated as lovingkindness, and is connected to ideas of an unconditional constant flow of the vibrant spark of creation itself.
In what ways do I block that flow and withhold the fullness in my heart?
When do I feel most connected and attuned to the abundance of love within me?

What I loved about WWDITS S5 Episode 4 (SPOILERS!!!):
Sean has over 9 DUIs
“Robby Robinson”
The high five/fist bump combo
Nandor wanting Guillermo to ogle him at the gym
Nandor saying “very cool” to Alexander being Jewish
(Also having a Jewish character in general)
“Meshugas - that means stuff” (ps to gentiles, this is not a correct statement)
“Kibitzing” I love Nandor so much but he’s getting it so wrong
Was not expecting to talk about this but fair warning I will be talking about every Jewish mention in this episode I’m starved for content
“We are mishpocha”
Nice to know someone thought positively of us back then
“I had no idea there were Jews in New York City” I can’t
“Kvelling” Nandor please
“Quit your kvetching” that’s- that’s actually correct
Collin Robinson not caring about being comptroller but just wanting to drain everyone
Evie!
Colin Robinson quoting romantic movies
Nadja’s actually working!
Laszlo trying so hard to get on the antipaxon’s good side but being terrible at it
“He seemed harmless and kinda lonely” lmao
Colin Robinsons feeding off people by dropping his cards
The fact that the livestream of the debate is 5 and a half hours
Colin Robinson letting Evie come in and feast with him
The two of them still annoying/feeding while being kidnapped
There’s a supreme council of energy vampires???
Said council being just as horrible as them
Colin Robinson and Evie being in awe at how good they are
“Does this fill me with a crippling sense of self doubt? Sometimes” poor guy just wanted a friend now that Guillermo’s not spending all his time with him
Is- is Nandor trying to convert???
“All hail bureaucracy”
Colin Robinson still having to sabotage himself because he just can’t do it
“Twins”
The fact that apparently Nandor’s foreskin grew back very fast
“Now he thinks I’m meshugana, which means he thinks I’m a little bit of a putz”
“I can speak 14 languages, as long as they are English”
The fact that the antipaxons all think Laszlo is the reincarnation of some oaf that brings “good luck and good fortune to everyone”
Evie running for comptroller instead
Nandor telling Guillermo to “shut the fuck up” during the movie when he couldn’t shut up earlier

My gift to @palebluebirdcomputer for the 2023 Moon Knight Mystery Swap! This was hosted by: @tiptapricot :D
It was a lot of fun working on this!! Below, you'll find that I had SO much more planned for this, but, because my computer hit the fan and decided to do a full system corruption (everything I worked on was lost), I only have the script and screenshots of it. However, I hope you enjoy plan B and have a great new years!!
(I don't know why on mobile it compresses these images horribly, but hey, they're not so compressed if you click on them or on computer! :D)
OKAY, so I was going to make this a different post, but I had an entire comic planned out haha.
Tumblr media
This was the entire thing, aside from the reference page haha. EIGHTEEN PAGES WERE LOST. Worse? I already inked half of them and started coloring one. Wonderful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First page - Jake turns off the blaring alarm. I managed to ink and color this page... well, color at least Jake in the Mr. Knight suit and the sarcophagus before my computer decided to die, so a win!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Second page - Included Jake waking up and getting ready for the day. I still have screen shots of the closet and this!! Hurray!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After, it was basically a bathroom scene where Steven showed up, was like: "Hey, Marc's not getting up. Check what day it is today!" Jake checks, it's Rosh Hashana! Wow! No wonder why. Crazy. How do you want to spend it? Steven is like, I miss our families traditional food. Spoiler alert: They get the food and everyone sits down to eat together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, Jake shows up and hangs out with Reese before Yehya bursts through the door with a lot of food. He would've walked to the kitchen, which is thankfully next to where everyone is (thank you Mission), and everyone else would follow suit as they helped put food away/prepare food (with banter, of course).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As they're putting away/preparing food, Greer shows up with William, and begins helping as well. We get a nice moment with Jake and William, where then he sends the kid off to grab Solider. William also gives Jake a "Happy Rosh Hashanah!" card spelt horribly that melts everyone's heart. Reese goes to put it on the fridge, and Greer and Jake have a nice moment together, now alone because Mission decided to make a wall to separate them from the others.
However, this is where the screenshots stop for some reason. After, it detailed the antisemitism in the past and how Marc feels uncomfortable with their Judaism because of everything that has happened, and because of that, how it's been a long time that they have fully celebrated Rosh Hashanah with their family. It effects Jake greatly because he loves his religion.
It ends off with them having a nice meal together and Marc finally showing up to say "Our new mishpocha... hm?" and Jake reciprocates the feeling.
HOWEVER! My computer decided to cry and crap itself, so now we're here with me longing for the snow. I hope you enjoyed this gift, even though it was Plan B, and once again, happy new years!! <3

Hello there! Been following for years now and have always loved your blog :) I know it's kind of early, but I'm the kind who overthinks things and plans, so I'm trying to get a head start. I've been researching my bio family and am trying to feel more connected with my ancestors, which means that I will be celebrating Hanukkah for the first time this year! However, I live in a very Christian place with basically no religious diversity, so it will probably be something that I do alone and for myself. Do you have any advice for starting Hanukkah traditions? Thank you!
Hello, dirtling, and welcome to the mishpocha! I'm so touched to hear that you've been enjoying my blog for a while!
The first thing you should probably know is that Hanukkah is not actually a major Jewish holiday. Over time, it has become more popular because it often coincides with Christmas and the consumerism that comes with it has been largely invented. Gift giving was not an original part of the observance. See also my post about what people should know about Hanukkah.
That being said, Hanukkah is still totally worth celebrating! If you haven't already, familiarize yourself with the story of Hanukkah. That link has a decent summary, but someone recommended A Short History of the Jewish People as another good resource. Definitely check that out. Also, just for kicks: this song was an absolute staple in my childhood Hanukkah experiences:
youtube
Now that we've covered the story of Hanukkah, let's talk about the meaning:
Tumblr media
This is one of those holidays where we're celebrating people trying and failing to kill us. This is an unfortunately common theme. Keep this in mind when you think about the story of Hanukkah.
Now I'll preface my tips for observance with the disclaimer that I am an Ashkenazi Jew, which is associated with certain traditions and practices that are different from those of other ethnic groups.
Lighting the menorah is one of the most iconic ways of celebrating Hanukkah. Here's a good guide to lighting the menorah. If you can, buy a menorah from a Jewish artist/shop rather than from somewhere like Amazon. Etsy would be a good place to start looking.
Sufganiyot are essentially jelly-filled donuts that are often eaten during Hanukkah because of its traditions regarding oil and fried foods.
Latkes are fried potato pancakes that are eaten for similar reasons. I grew up reading Grandma's Latkes, which is a picture book about the story of Hanukkah and the tradition of latkes.
Make a charitable donation.* Hanukkah isn't really about presents. My family usually does some gift giving but also puts an emphasis on donating to causes that we believe in. If you don't already have something in mind, I would personally recommend the Yiddish Book Center as a great way to honor and preserve Jewish culture of the past.
*Jews often donate in multiples of 18, because 18 is symbolic of the word chai, or life in Hebrew.
Good luck preparing for your first festival of lights!
-Reid

The world has this image of Jews as being basically White (for any of several given definitions of White) and basically European (again, for any of several given definitions of European).  It’s eminently possible to quibble with this understanding, and many people do it at greater length and with greater eloquence than I want to get into right now.  But what is equally and undeniably true is that there really are Jewish communities out there that no one, and I mean no one, would ever describe as White or as European.
When we think of African Jews, we may think first of the Ethiopian Jews, most of whom now live in Israel and who celebrate a holiday called Sigd that has been attracting quite a bit of attention in the non-Ethiopian Jewish world.  We might also think of the Abayudaya of Uganda, who have become famous largely for their harmony singing and more recently for becoming coffee growers.  But there’s also a smallish Jewish community in Nigeria that’s growing pretty rapidly.
Many Nigerian Jews are Jews-by-choice, but there is also a tradition that the Igbo people have an ancient tribal connection to Judaism.  However the connection comes about, the Jews of Nigeria are part of the great global mishpocha, and we love to hear their voices.  This is part of the Shabbat morning Kedusha as recited in Lagos.

Think I Like Word Play?
Señora was ever so kind as to gift me a daily calendar of Dad Jokes. As one of my quotidian habits I have been sharing the “humor” with my mishpocha in my native state of Oklahoma…much to their chagrin. Today’s joke: Why can’t you hear a pterodactyl going to the bathroom? Because the “P” is silent. Of course I had to riff on that: I can already hear the tsunami of groans coming from Oklahoma……

Cauliflower Borscht
Like most everyone I know, I overindulged over the December holidays. So, it’s time for some austerity — caloriewise, healthwise — with the menu.
But I like good food. Tasty food. Filling, satisfying food that looks good enough to please.
This soup has it all. It’s a riff on classic Borscht — cabbage is the foundation of Borscht but I didn’t have any! So I used cauliflower. It’s in the cabbage family after all. Mishpocha maybe.
It was perfect.
Follow me on Instagram @RonnieVFein
BORSCHT WITH CAULIFLOWER
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, chopped
2 medium-large beets, peeled and shredded
2 plum tomatoes, chopped
1 parsnip, peeled and shredded
2 cups cut up cauliflower
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
6 cups vegetable stock
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon salt or to taste
freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 large Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and diced
3 tablespoons white vinegar, approximately
1-1/2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
dairy sour cream or plain Greek style yogurt, optional
Heat the vegetable oil in a soup pot over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes. Add the garlic, beets, tomatoes, parsnip, cauliflower and parsley and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3-4 minutes. Pour in the stock, add the bay leaf and salt and pepper to taste. Bring the liquid to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer, partially covered, one hour. Add the potatoes and cook for 45-60 minutes or until the vegetables have softened. Stir in the vinegar and dill and cook for 12-15 minutes. Taste for seasoning and add more salt, pepper or vinegar to taste. Remove the bay leaf. If the soup is cooked using vegetable stock, serve it garnished with a dollop of sour cream if desired.
Makes 6-8 servings

Reflections on hod and yesod of chesed, for my mishpocha who are counting with me… Thank you so much for supporting my work! patreon.com/kimchicuddles
During Sefirat Ha'Omer, we are invited on a mystical journey, a journey that spirals us deeper and deeper into discovering what exists within our psyches and souls…
text reads:
Today's focus is hod within chesed, and tonight begins the focus of yesod within chesed.
Ever since I was little I loved to wake before the sunrise and witness the details of the morning.
Hod brings up ideas of splendor and celebration in those sorts of simple moments.
Yesod can be translated as foundation, and is also linked to ideas of sexual energy and unification.
Yesod is a connection on a deeper level than what we can physically see.
The movement between these two ideas within the week of chesed makes me take notice of the quiet foundation that holds the infinite splendor in every moment, combining the colors of the morning as the sun rises to paint the new day with them.
And noticing the divinity of creation in each subtle moment of connection with anyone, I remember that even a glance with a stranger can be a moment of love that transcends both of us.

'Por Thozhil': lessons in mentorship in the face of chilling murders
Some have it, some don’t. Some are energized by the perficient future it offers; others see the drudgery of a pontificating tunnel that’s a time suck. Some see it as expanding their mishpocha; others view it as an intrusion into their solitude and focused work pattern. Which is why some are mentors, others tormentors. In the splendid Por Thozhil (The Art of War), cop Loganathan (Sarath Kumar)…
