To Runaan's highy tuned senses, the bright lights and clashing sounds of the funfair was anything but fun to deal with, but the look of childlike joy on Ethari's face when he'd agreed to go was more than worth putting up with sensory hell for a couple of hours.

"He looked a little apprehensive" Ethari agreed.

"You'd think that a sky mage would be more enthusiastic about rides like that." Runaan had no intention of finding out why said coster was called the bone shaker.

"He's probably never been to a xadian fair before." Ethari pointed out "and you know as much as I do that folks like to put interesting enchantments on the rides to make them more... uh "

"Interesting? Don't remind me."

Runaan may not of been ones for the rides, but there was one part of funfairs that he loved, mainly becase he got to show off to his big strong husband.

The games.

Whilst Ethari dominated games like the hammer swing/bell ring game and tug of war, anything aim or precision based was Runaan’s speciality, and he had two years' worth of Ethari birthdays to catch up on.

What a good thing it was that Ethari was a sucker for big plush toys.

First up was a dart throwing game, which getting 3 bullseyes would win you one of the football sized adoraburr plushes, some of which lit up.

And lit up brightly.

Which, of course, meant that the one he won was one of those.

And it was not a bad prize, since it was very soft, nicely squishy, and made Ethari beam as brightly as it lit up when he saw it.

Runaan swapped it for the beany moonstrider that Ethari had won off the hammer swing, and the duo set off again.

In rapid secession, they hit up 3 more games stands, winning between them another, non glowing adoraburr, a large moonmoth that could be converted into a backpack, and an even larger plush moonstrider, which almost came up to Runaan's hip. (And it was laying down)

".. and where are we putting that?" Runaan asked as Ethari presented it to him with a grin

"Foot of the bed? I would say lounge, but I think Jenni would disapprove."

Jenni, the moonstrider pup, the newest addition to the household, would admittedly probably hate the thing on sight. But that was an issue for when they got home. Not for now. The now issue was actually carrying the big, bulky plush around as they slowly circled back towards the food stands.

This is another idea that had been in my head for a while, and I'm really pleased with how it eventually came together. I had such a clear mental picture of this little girl playing matchmaker and Very Seriously asking Steve all these questions, and it was truly so much fun to write once the full plot came to me.

I can't rec my own Stucky fics without including this one. I don't know if I'd say it's my Very Favorite -- my number one? But I do really like it. I am proud of this one, and the fact that it's my number one in nearly all of my stats feels right. It feels like that should be the case. So.

I feel like this fic manages to be both smut, in an unbearably-soft-and-romantic-established-relationship way, and a legitimate Bucky character study of sorts. Which is something I do really like that I did. Also. These two deserve this sort of softness. Always.

New Who Kid Watches Classic Who: Genesis Of The Daleks

Introduction

Classic Who is something I owe a lot too even though I have never seen it. Without Classic Who my Grandma never would have gotten my Mum into Doctor Who and without my Mum getting into Doctor Who I never would have become obsessed with New Who. Its a generational cycle in my family that only my brother has broken.

With all of Classic Who being put on BBC I Player well most of it. (I'm gutted about an unearthly child) I decided it was time to get into the era that thrived my Grandma (Rip) and Mum's love for scifi. But before I started from the beginning there were three episodes I knew I needed to check out, let's say they were for lore curiosities sake. The TV Movie, Genesis Of The Daleks and The Five Doctor's. I'll share my thoughts on The TV Movie and The Five Doctor's in separate blogs, for now I gotta talk about Genesis Of The Daleks. It's gonna take me a white to get use to the 6 part stories and dramatic cliffhangers but I'm willing to give it a chance.

Okay I will say as a disabled person I see what Russell T Davies means but he needs to rewatch this episode as The Disabled Villian trope becomes worse if the character is motivated by their disability Davros isn't. I completely understand the thoughts though I just hope that skit was non cannon or an alternate universe and they treat him with respect. He was a manipulative menace in this episode and its pretty ironic that in the end he got out manipulated. I hope his other appearances are just as good and they explain his survival well.

What I Liked

There's a lot I loved throughout this six parter it was very tense and climatic. I also thought our tardis team of The Doctor, Sarah Jane and Harry Sullivan worked together masterfully. Whilst The Ponds reminded me of A Married Couple Babysitting their goofy Son, These three reminded me of Two Siblings trying to keep up with their Older Wise But Mad Sibling. It's the first time I've seen Sarah with a Doctor other than 10 and 11 and they work together beautifully.

Firstly I have to praise the incredible cinematography. Man the shots despite this episode being filmed so long ago are absolutely beautiful even on a wide screen TV. The angled shadowy shots of the Daleks are really menacing and it adds to the dark tone of the story as it is. All the settings including the clean white aesthetic of the karld labs create a deeply unsettling feeling in your stomach. I also think the cuts to Davros make you very uneasy as well, his introduction and reveal was absolutely magnificent.

Secondly I have to praise the incredible themes and philosophy incoperated into this story. Toxic Fans like to scream and yell at Moden Doctor Who calling it woke when it always has been. Terry Nation crafted a really good story about the ethics of war and genocide even if you know that the very think you plan to stop might become an earth shattering unempathetic killer. It was very heartbreaking but seeing all the karld scientists wiped out by the Daleks was so important to include as it shows the deep juxtaposition between Davros and The Doctor which makes them brilliant rivals. Despite all the Daleks will do The Doctor can't bare to initiate a genocide of them in their earliest form, a mistakes that will haunt The Doctor's character for many years to come. Whilst Davros would happily kill his own men and play a Palpatine chess like game between The Karld's and The Tharls just for the survival of his creation. Its a story with very important messages and themes that the audience need to evolve. Its also a bold one as we finally get to see the orgins of The Daleks and why they are so Heartless. My mum pointed out but I already knew that the Daleks are definitely a metaphor for a certain group in World War 2. The Cybermen too you could argue.

Finally I have to praise the high stakes and thrills. My mum stared at my gasps and started laughing when I said that Classic Who seems to be more of a blood bath than the New Series. I know Bad Wolf and Parting Of The Ways was brutal but this story is just on a whole other level. As well as laughing with me she did hold my hand too I was absolutely heartbroken at some of the deaths and was routing for The Doctor, Harry And Sarah to survive and over come everything. Not to mention the cliffhangers showing this deep danger are characters were in. I was glued to my seat anticipating what might happen next. Nobody was safe and I definitely felt for all the characters that fell to The Daleks peril. This story is definitely worth it for The High Stakes alone.

What I Disliked

Okay so it might be because it's early days of me watching but I didn't like the cliffhangers as they felt disruptive to the flow of the story and very repetitive as half of the cliffhangers were are tardis team in peril or being kidnapped. My mum saids its just the fever of being a new who baby and that it was exciting at the time but for me it was a bit frustrating.

Secondly I feel like Sarah who was beautifully written in New Who didn't get much too do at all. It feels like she was running around for the sake of it and I would have loved her to play an even bigger role then she did. Whilst Harry got to help The Doctor rescue Sarah I felt like Sarah only got to hang around with other characters for the sake of it. I loved Elizabeth Sladen and will forever miss her so I want to see more awesome moments with a younger Sarah.

Conclusion

So those are my first thoughts after watching Genesis Of The Daleks. It was a really good story arc to the point I can tell why it haunted The Doctor so much even in The Time War. Poor Eight especially was haunted by it. I think it still holds up well despite the effects. My mum's right I just gotta lose myself in the story considering it's media that came out during her time. Very invested though. I can see why so many people like Four but like how everyone loves Ten he's probably not gonna be fav Classic Doctor as I tend to route for the underdogs.

Davros is so menacing and I generally can't wait to see his other appearances in Classic Who apart from the one where he's a floating head as I do think that's problematic and it makes me uncomfortable. I seriously admire the boldness of the stories and can see how they've shaped New Who. I hope New Who can make the Daleks as scary as they were in this episode. I miss when the Daleks weren't just a running gag.

I'm gonna definitely be excited when I get back to this Tardis Team. Sarah and Harry are companions that beautifully compliment the 4th Doctor. I really am excited for this journey though as a whole.

So from my ideas on Le Nozze/ Ang Kasal, ethnic and national identity would need to play heavily into Filipino adaptations/productions to actually make an impact. disclaimer: I really prefer race informed over race blind stuff because theres such a rich history you can get from a random actor/singer. and its personal. its resonant. opera where these characters are just characters are already interesting, but my point with these productions is that instead of being an offshoot of colonial influence and viewed as such, operas can be a way Filipino audiences can see themselves or their history in.

I think Rigoletto set in either the American colonial era would add another layer to the oppression Rigoletto, and to an extent, Glinda, experience due to the unequal standing of the Philippines as a colonial state. We focus a lot on Spanish oppression of Filipinos but I think the benevolent assimilation approach the US took is more in line with someone in power like the Duke who abuses those under him and is yet desired. Theres's hierarchy in Rigoletto and in the American colonial era, but these hierarchies depend more on allegiance, not race or ethnicity, though those already make a subservient Filipino as merely a little brown brother and not a true American. And the Duke, btw, doesnt even have to be American; there's a possible other layer to the idea of betrayal and abuse the Filipino elite were able to enact as allies of the new colonial power (the hot take here is the duke parallels rigoletto but in the opposite direction)

I think it would be very similar if it were set during the Marcos era; there's a reason protesters called/still call it a US-Marcos dictatorship. In this setting though, the power afforded to the Duke is no longer a colonial power but one of their own (from the concept of "tayo" vs "sila", it is a division within "tayo"). Evil wields political power and with the suppression of those who go against the administration, the threat of death and torture is much greater. Also factor in the possible allegory of Glinda as an innocent bystander who becomes a desaparecidos/disappeared like many innocents and even loyal allies of the Marcoses who were eventually betrayed. The presence of Sparafucile and Maddalena also lurk to contradict the whitewashed history the Marcoses try to portray: Ang Bagong Lipunan/A New Society, where crime and poverty are supposedly eradicated. Extrajudicial killings beyond political reasons still occur, and even act on behalf of the government. And who is Rigoletto in these two settings? A turncoat who betrays not just fellow humans but even his own ethnicity (insert rant on regionalism in the Philippines) and ideology? Or a man trying to save himself and his daughter in a system that is formed to consume them? Idk i guess these are really shallow parallels but solidarity is a thing across the world, recogizing the self through the other and whatnot.

In modern PH society, I think the nature of imperialism and capitalism really just makes a periphery nation a whore/ibong mababa ang lipad, but considering the still dilapidated health system and the "way out" for many Filipino women by marrying a rich white guy really makes Violetta a resonant character? She's not sempere libera-ing, she's still stuck in a patriarchal and a neocolonial system where she has no control, even over her own health because of the stigma she faces as a courtesan, even though its ingrained in our society to do exactly that! I mean, she is trying to escape but she will never escape!!! (whats also sad is that i'm actually equating 19th century healthcare with moden ph healthcare lol)

headcanon on: attitude & manner of speech

There is a great difference between Pharaoh Atem and Atem who does not remember/is no longer a Pharaoh. It's, in fact, immediately pointed out (by Jou, if I remember correctly) in Millenium World.

By nature, Atem is very playful, chaotic and emotional. He does not plan a lot, he acts on whims, he teases and challenges people all the time. Though he sees people as being equal, he would often jokingly put himself above and list off his virtues. He speaks casually, in moden settings using a lot of slang and memes, plays around with words.

All of this is heavily watered down when he serves as a Pharaoh. Atem never wanted to be just a Pharaoh; he wanted to be a good one. He immediately acts more regal, air around him shifts, he begins to even speak differently. He is much more serious and his joyful, playful spark is - sadly - forgotten and saved for rare, personal moments.

Thus, people seeing and interacting with Atem as a Pharaoh (Ancient times/Millennium World/Aaru) can really feel like interacting with someone else when speaking to Atem (as Spirit of the Puzzle/ressurected and given time to adapt)

BOOK REVIEW - The Art of War by Sun Tzu

So!

I've been reading two very dense books - Periodic Tales by Hugh Aldersley-Williams, and Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Kobes Du Mez. They're both very detailed and very long, and they're taking me some time to get through. And while I'm at work, I can't just have a book on my desk to flip through.

So instead, I've been delving into Project Gutenberg. I was inspired by another Tumblr post to look into books on politics written through history, and this was the first one to come up.

A brief primer: The Art of War is a text by Chinese military tactician and general Sun Tzu, who was employed by the House of Wu to help fight their battles against various other houses of the day - "the day" being sometime in the 6th Century BC. And whilst this is treated as a seminal text on military tactics and battle planning, it didn't exactly help the House of Wu, which was crushed by their neighbour to the South, the House of Yue, about a century later.

The edition of The Art of War that I read was a translation by Lionel Giles, complete with annotations and footnotes regarding the translation. It was translated in 1908, piecemeal from various other modernisations in Chinese where the translators had added their own flavour, so there are definite ambiguities, but on the whole these notes are useful, as they give some insight into how other people have seen Tzu's words, and they give extra context to some rules. It also means we are treated to some stories of historical Chinese warfare, which may or may not be apocryphal, to illustrate some of the points. Such tales include:

Placing old and infirm soldiers on the walls and in plain sight, and hiding the able-bodied, so that spies sent to report on the conditions of your army to the enemy will underestimate the strength of your force;

Opening the gates of your heavily defensible city wide open and practically welcoming the enemy in, so that they suspect and ambush and retreat;

Putting your own men into desperate straits and then charging the enemy during a sandstorm to rout them;

Set fire to your enemies tents in the night, and have men bang drums and make noise to scare them from their camps so you can kill them with crossbows!

I'm being a little facetious here, but these are some of the tactics previous translators have suggested were employed against armies, enemies, and even generals' own soldiers to ensure victory. There are some thirteen chapters in all, and apocryphal tales aside, a lot of it is good advice - things like issuing clear commands, making sure your soldiers do not despise you, protecting your supply line, and getting the better terrain. There's a reason The Art of War is still talked about today, and part of that is because the core tenets of its message are still used in modern military thinking. Sun Tzu emphasises "the factor of Earth" in planning, and terrain considerations are still vital; protection of supply lines is still important for moving large numbers of troops, even if the methods of movement and protection have changed; and let's not forget chapters 12 and 13 as a whole, "The Use of Fire" and "The Use of Spies", which in moden times Sun Tzu could write whole novels about, I'm sure!

All jokes aside, The Art of War is a treatise of vital information which has lasted for millenia, and it's full of instructions and suggestions which can be applied to everyday life just as easily (although please don't try to adapt the Fire chapter for everyday life. Please, please, please). I genuinely enjoyed reading it, especially the asides from Giles which make up most of the text nowadays (even though he has a habit of deciding "supply lines" means "lines of communication" for some batshit reason. Idk man, he was a translator, not a soldier), and I think it's a useful book to read even if you have no interest in war, as it gives great insight into historical politics which is still useful in the modern day.

● Bahagian pertama memperkenalkan apa itu AlQuran? Siapa itu AlQuran? Fakta lain berkaitan dengan Al-Quran? Pengenalan ringkas tapi mendalam ini amat penting supaya individu berasa dekat dan familiar dengan AlQuran.

● Bahagian kedua dibincangkan apa itu tadabbur? Apakah istilah-istilah yang sering dikaitkan dengan tadabbur Al-Quran? Apa beza Qiraah, Tilawah, Tadabbur dan Tafsir? Manners to be adopted for us to fully embrace this beneficial act, inshaAllah.

● Bahagian ketiga, 15 basic techniques were introduced, followed by 15 intermediate techniques to be implemented once we’ve comprehended and begun to embrace the basics.

The basics mainly emphasised on setting our intentions right, reaping its healing effects, and getting legitimate sources. A guide meant for anyone who seeks solace and truth. The intermediates are for those who have eye-wide-open moments. More tips to delve into.

May Allah ease our journey, Ameen. [I recommend and relate to Surah Taha Verse 25-28]
