Carry On Countdown 2022 Day 2: AU/Alternate Universe
"Will you tattoo your name over my heart?" Simon whispered. "No," Baz whispered back. "What if I come back to you in six months, and I still want it?"

confession. When I first read this part of My Rosebud Boy:
Tumblr media
Just for a second, I misread it as Natasha's name in a heart. Which is to say, even months later, the image of Baz with one of these just pops into my head randomly.

Had book club discussion about Carry On today! Here’s some of the highlights:
People were mostly a big fan of the Magic system. Main criticism about it was that it would sometimes take them out of it, like the snickers spell while ebb is actively dying
There was much discussion over Penny and Baz kidnapping the dog, which was very entertaining to me
One of my managers asked if Agatha was in the rest of the series. I told her “she is, but I don’t think she wants to be”
People loved Baz lol. There was a bit less love for Simon (that’s okay, that’s what I’m there for)
I explained the lore behind Fangirl and why the titles are the way they are. Thoroughly confused some people
Someone had to leave the zoom call halfway through because his neighbors called the cops on his van???? Idk that was just wild
One dude who showed up also didn’t even finish the book yet, which I didn’t find out until partway through, so that was fun
They noted some Harry Potter similarities, but agreed it was a very different book
Number one complaint was that “nothing happened”. They were really interested in the politics of the world, how relationships were formed and were pretty disappointed that a lot of that was exposition
One coworker was confused as to why Nico couldn’t do magic anymore, since they mentioned he used to be able to use Ebb’s staff and honestly I don’t remember the answer, so help here would be great if anyone knows. He should be able to even though they snapped his wand, right?
One coworker was frustrated that Simon lost his magic because he thought that was the most interesting part. I told him that he was not alone in that, since I remember so many people being upset back in the day
Everyone saw the plot twist that the Mage was the bad guy coming. Tbh, I read it so long ago that I can’t remember if I was surprised
Everyone also saw snowbaz coming lol. One guy said “I knew by chapter three that those two would be fucking” (oh just you wait my friend. Soon the issue will be that they’re not fucking)
They found it very entertaining that the endorsement was from Lev Grossman because “The Magicians is the polar opposite of this book”
I brought in Skee’s ABC’s of Carry On, Venessa’s art book, the whole series, Fangirl, Scattered Showers, MRB, and various pins from Selkie and others. Also wore my dragon wing earrings and Kris’ shirt :P I let myself be unhinged about it because this is my time to shine. I also have the Wayward Son poster pack at my desk that I pointed out
Overall reviews are positive. Most people didn’t love it quite like I do, but they enjoyed it well enough. I am lovingly forcing two coworkers to finish out the series because they made the mistake of being my friend lol
One guy’s review was “I liked it and I don’t know why. I hate Harry Potter and stuff like it usually.”
Very happy that this is done though, since I can finally hang back up Kris’ Carry On poster. It has too many spoilers, so I’ve had it on the ground hiding for two months for when people came over 😭 it’s going back in its place of honor next to my TV

thank u for the tags @ivelovedhimthroughworse @artsyunderstudy @whogaveyoupermission!
The new releases have completely consumed me, so I figured I wouldn’t be able to do anything, but I’ve actually somehow written not one but two little fics set in the MRB AU. I’m not sharing anything from those because... well, spoilers. But you can find them here.
My writing process can be very chaotic. I wouldn’t say dialogue is my strength, but one of those fics came to me entirely in dialogue (and I had to write the actions afterwards, it’s usually the other way around). I’d say I normally do a lot of careful planning – my outlines are super detailed, but I literally just sat down and wrote these two fics with no thought or planning at all. It was super spontaneous.
So anyway, here are some lines on that one haunted house comphet fic. The process here is the complete opposite (different types of stories have different demands and all that). I made a CALENDAR to organize this shit, and I have a system where I mark the “month” (which is actually a chapter) with a little green circle so I know that chapter is finished, because I’m writing out of order, and otherwise I would get absolutely lost.
I elbow him, and he smirks. His sleepy eyes are sparkling.
A lock of dark hair falls on his face when he adjusts his position. I want to touch it… I wonder if it’s as soft as it looks.
I keep my hands in my pockets.
He’s the only one who calls me that…
Snow.

The clock chimes.
as a sidenote: I’m considering releasing this with no beta or even that much proofreading because letting typos and silly mistakes be Part Of The Horror sounds very amusing and entertaining to me

Replicant.
In the fortnight since its release, Blade Runner 2049 has retained its 4.2+ rating on Letterboxd. Denis Villeneuve’s sequel is generally drawing high praise, with some caveats, and a lot of love for Roger Deakins. (We’ve tried to keep this round-up spoiler-free, but one person’s mild spoiler is another’s setting-the-context. You have been forewarned.)
5-star thoughts
“The most haunting and moving science fiction film I’ve ever seen. Probably the most beautiful too!” writes Alex Hill, who was not the first to say “Deakins deserves an Oscar for this”. So overwhelmed was she by the film’s “utter brilliance and devastating beauty”, Jennifer wanted to “print out and frame every single shot in this film and hang them in my house”. We agree.
Also writing at the 5-star end of the scale is Tristan Parillo: “The perfect anti-blockbuster, 2049 features all the visual spectacle and visceral imagery you’d expect from a sequel to Blade Runner, but sacrifices none of the intellectual depth.”
Tumblr media
“Blade Runner 2049 hit me like 2,049 Harrison Ford punches to the face. What a fantastic film with a beautiful message, and just all-around cinematic treat. It’s possibly the slowest movie I’ve ever seen but it rewards you with its mood and atmosphere. Every set piece is beautiful and each performance is moving. Fantastic theatre experience.” (Cody)
Many of you have praise for the way in which 2049 sits as a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 original. “This feels so different to Scott’s film, but they have that sense of secrets and hidden meanings in common. They are both also, crucially, still detective noir at heart.” (David Nolan)
“Blade Runner 2049 bewegt sich auf dem selben philosophischen niveau des vorgängers, verbindet dabei gekonnt alte denkansätze und bringt in manchen szenen dann schöne ‘gespiegelte’ ideen mit ein.” (Burning)
Translation: “Blade Runner 2049 moves on the same philosophical plane as its predecessor, skillfully combining old approaches to thinking and introducing some beautiful ‘mirrored’ ideas.”
Tumblr media
Blade Runner 2049 lovers have their criticisms, too: that the marketing sucked, that Jared Leto’s character wasn’t particularly memorable despite all the build-up, that it lacked the quotable dialog that peppered the original, and that the female characters were marginalized.
Harvey goes further on this last point in a mixed review: “The treatment of women in this film is especially rough. The female characters are either prostitutes, pure evil, kept behind glass, disfigured or killed. After Sicario, I’m sensing a pattern.”
But overall, the positive reviewers agree that it is a film worth putting on your pants for.
1-star pans
At the other end of the scale—aside from near-universal agreement about Deakins’ Oscar-worthy cinematography—reviewers have issues with the plot, the character development, the need for a sequel at all, and, again, the treatment of females. Anette found 2049 “pretty, but without purpose” and “shockingly sexist”. Others found the film “a misogynistic, dystopian mess” that “treats its women as disposable”.
Tumblr media
Another common theme amongst 2049’s detractors: whether the film’s central question was worth making an entire movie to ask. Not according to Knut-Arne Heggen: “Ultimately it feels contrived, bleak and without charm, almost devoid of ideas and not confident in the few it does play around with, leaving absolutely nothing to the imagination. The lazy script leaves the existentialism of the first in favor of an essentialist outlook which is completely uninteresting and oddly dated in a time when AI is a very hot topic.”
CourtJester concurs: “2049 tried to ride the line between cerebral visual poem and action blockbuster, and it failed in both respects. In part, this is because the original Blade Runner concept is not as unique or interesting as it once was. ‘Do clones have souls?’ was never a sound philosophical question, at least not as much as the oft-confused ‘do computers have souls?’. It was fun in the ’80s, but we know better now.”
About that run-time
Some of you are unimpressed (“what’s meant to seem patient seems ponderous”) but for most, the 163-minute run time is “a non-issue”. The shoot may have felt long to Roger Deakins, but “the almost-three-hours of this wasn't nearly enough for me, frankly, for both the ways in which it very much is Blade Runner and very much isn't,” writes Matt Lynch. “So immersive and impressive that the run time did not bother me one bit!” Films and Faith agrees.
Tumblr media
On Deakins
This write-up on Deakins’ lighting and cinematography is a worthwhile read, collecting material from many of his recent interviews and breaking down his lighting set-ups. And, like most of you, IndieWire isn’t holding back on its Oscar recommendation.

The Defenders: Episode 1
beginning of the ep is BS - if I can’t see shit, I can’t care about watching. That’s very easy to understand.
At least Danny is exactly where he belongs - beaten in the sewers.
So. I didn’t watch Iron Fist (surprise, eh?) so I know mostly nothing. Like. I know only two characters from IF - DannyBS and Colleen-Angel. The better part of this duo is not here, so I don’t care. (And if she is here - I CAN’T SEE IT. DO I LOOK LIKE BATMAN TO YOU, MCU?)
Also. Danny is Marvel’s Green Lantern, I see?
My ability to care is falling for as long as Danny is on screen. I want Jess.
It’s a meh opening. They had better.
Jess! Trish! My babies. Perfect babies <3
Jess’ alcoholism is still not a good joke, but I’m happy she wasn’t ‘cured’ miracously.
Luke, sweetheart <3 He’s perfect. SO perfect. I missed him.
*gathers jaw from the floor* Foggy?! Hi, baby. He looks better.
Foggy and Luke’s ‘friendship’ is something that I really wanna see and really wanna get.
So, I take Matt is still working as a lawyer? After he fucked up his AND FOGGY’S firm for... BS pretty much. What he has an army of replacements now, if ‘justice’ calls? He needs therapy. Is he on another side now? Did he switch from attorney to prosecutor? Or is he representing a private client? I.Is.Lost.
Oh good. He’s an asshole lawyer now. Doesn’t matter on what side he is, he is aggressive, too full of himself. I WANT HIM TO FAIL. He needs a reality check every night. I think I wouldn’t say that, if I saw him being ‘normal’ in court? Lets say this is awfully long and his side used all ‘nice’ tactics. But the only other times I saw him in court was Punisher’s case, when he pretty much (verbally) attacked his own client. I don’t like his tactics. Show me he can be reasonable, that he adjusts his tactics according to the case and witness/victim/alleged criminal. Then I’m gonna praise him going off on ppl.
He shouldn’t have won. Even if it’s a good cause.
Also, you’re a lawyer, not a psychologist/therapist. Your blindness gives you a bit more leeway than most people, but still. Always be careful wtf you’re talking about. You had years adjusting to your disability (that - no matter how I phrase that, it’s gonna sound bad - has it’s superhero perks). That’s a young man (child?), who is right after his world collapsed. Telling him ‘it’s gonna be harder’ is true, but it’s also dangerous when the kid looks like he belongs on suicide watch.
Why. Sure, we we’re missing just this awkward reunion. How did they know I wanted to see that? Ugh. Awkward hetero romance is awkward. SKIP.
Colleen? So she was with Mr BS? Eh. At least NOW I can see her.
I.DON’T.CARE.ABOUT.DANNY’S.BS.MANPAIN. WHO.CARES.
Like I said. I know nothing about Iron Fist. But what is this vision/hallucination BS?
It’s so nice Colleen’s role starts as a babysitter (DON’T TELL ME SHE FOUGHT EARLIER BC I DIDN’T SEE IT). Kill him.
I’m starting to feel I should’ve watched IF. But. I don’t wanna.
This is like. Begging her to look for him.
(I love the difference between Jess’ and Luke’s shots? Her is blue-ish and cold and he’s just... sunny. Bright. Yellow. I love it)
Aww, Claire!
I don’t like sex scenes (and I actually forgot how many both JJ and Cage had in both their shows), but I’m gonna let it slide. Bc a) Claire, b) they both just... lit up when they saw each other. I’m all for this kind of relationships. (I still don’t like sex scenes.)
Can we go back to Claire and Luke? Please. Out of all couples that I have to endure, I’d rather see something genuinely sweet and real and loving.
Liar.
Of course, not. You were driven by an assumption that your bf is cheating on you. To this point I’m not sure if you weren’t right, but at the same time. What kind of relationship that is? In that scene, Elektra looked like Matt’s... sister/cousin/someone, who is sicked and in need of help. They didn’t look like they just had a marathon of sex and they were shameless enough to let you see it. (I have issues with Karen.)
The different ways of shooting scenes (that are consistened with the characters and their original shows) are making my head spin. But it’s so awesome? Luke’s yellow, Jess’ blue, I think Matt’s leans towards red... It’s awesome.
Matt needs a therapist, not a priest. I’m being serious rn. Call Tony Stark, he’ll get you a contact to someone good.
Aaaa. Denied. Are you. Srsl? Is he blaming Elektra for all his bad choices? Let me tell you something, sweetheart. You’re a grown man. No matter what kind of pull Elektra had, they were still your decisions. She taunted and mocked and teased, but you could always say no. What BS is that? Hate, hate, hate.
Stop with the flickering lights and dark places. I beg you. I am blind. Let me watch in peace!
That’s Madame Gao? Right? Why is she.. a servant to not-Ripley? What the fuck? She was Fisk’s equal (no, she was bigger than him) and now she’s... what? Messenger?
Well. Shit. (I’m gonna assume it’s MrBS fault bc I don’t like him)
Well. What an ‘eh’ episode... It’s a good thing they released a few of them, so people don’t have to wonder if it’s really good enough to watch (spoilers: at this point? it’s not. jj s2 and cage s2 would be better).
Though, I liked the ending - meshing colors in Matt’s place. The reds and blues from police cars and the yellow windows. This is a very not subtle way to say ‘and now their gonna be together!’

MRB SPOLIERS!!!!!!
Can I just say that I will never get over that rainbowrowell made Simon a florist in MRB? It's too perfect, away from the violence that his bio father put on him in the main trilogy. MRB Simon can thrive under his flowerchild mother's influence, and flower arrangement is also such a sweet and lovely artform as well and it brings to mind the flower magic we see Ruth and Lucy do in the trilogy which is a nice easter egg. Also Baz as a tattoo artist is amazing cause he pricks people, with needles, like fangs, GET IT? Anyway I think it was a brilliant choice.
My twin was talking about MRB and they made me realize on a meta level why Davy survives in this AU. He doesn't have the power to hurt Simon. He is his shitty boss and he is still Simons bio dad BUT Simon doesn't give a crap about him and undermines him all the time. This Simon doesn't care about Davy so this Davy can't hurt him. So he gets to live as a nothing character on the fringes of the story, he doesn't even show up in person. It's a neat bit of meta for this AU

FYI SOME SFC & MRB SPOILERS
Hi @rainbowrowell so I just want to say I LOVE LOVE LOVE both Simon Snow stories so much! I have to say I am really happy to see how much Simon's narrative voice has evolved from the trilogy. He sounded and acted like the Simon I've always known but more at peace and sure of himself. It's amazing to see how far he's come in 6 months and I am so happy for him! ( I will say I am so glad he was discouraged from joining the London Police, he probably thought he'd be like John McClane from Die Hard but no Simon NO.)
And I am so obsessed with MRB!!!!! Simon and the gang are so charming and fun I am so in love with them all, I loved seeing Simon showing some expertise and getting some insights about MRB Simons past. It was so good!!!!!!
I have 3 questions I hope you won't mind answering, and no pressure to answer at all! :)
1) what is the spider woman's name who makes Simon's clothes?
2) what did Baz get Simon for Christmas?
3) Did Simon have the best Christmas ever with his family?
*bonus if you're feeling generous
4) Did Simon tell Penny about his parentage?
5) how did that drink with Dev and Niall go?

MRB SPOILERS
I just realised something. The Simon in MRB was MUCH more candid about his past and hangups in a way that Simon Prime isn't and at first I attributed it to his circumstances being different or his age. But I realised My Rosebud Boy is written in 3rd person limited, it's Simon's perspective but he is not telling us these things a narrator is.
See cause part of the reason the audience attached to Baz in CO immediately is that he is a very charming storyteller, even when he recounts less savory bits of his character the way he presents it to us is so funny and witty we get on side. His description of his early politics and the tape recorder incident are not flattering but so well told and filled with wit and devil may care that it's hard to stay mad, in fact we work to forgive him for it.
Simon's narrative voice is extremely complex, he doesn't provide a lot of context on himself, he insults himself worse than anything anyone could or has said about him and he is not especially reliable when he descibes his abilities or how others view him. He will describe less how he feels about a situation and more what he would do, which is more open to loose interpretation. An example is when he mentions the talking lessons he gets in CO and he doesn't tell us how these lessons, or how being nonverbal during his childhood made him feel he only says how he wished he could have screamed at Davy to use his words, which is what his speech therapist would say to him. There's a lot to unpack but Simon doesn't help us out by explaining why he wants to say this to Davy or divulge his emotional state.
So it's interesting to me that the most candid version of Simon we get is told to us from a narrator rather than from Simon himself.
