Summary: Of all the things you thought would happen at Deanna Monroe's party, being asked to dance by your quiet, shy partner wasn't what you expected. And you certainly didn't expect to have to teach him how to dance.

“Daryl, calma. You won't be able to move right if you're so tense.”

Daryl huffed and crossed his arms over his chest, giving you a frustrated look. “M'not tense. Dancin' s'jus' fuckin' impossible.”

You shook your head and gave him a huge smile. You stepped behind him and readjusted his body, before stepping in front of him again. “It's not impossible. You just got to become one with the music. Feel the rhythm in your soul, and let your body do the rest. Don't overthink it too much.”

Daryl grumbled something under his breath before sighing. “Alrigh'. Show me again,” he nodded, his lips twitching up at the small squeal of delight you emitted.

Sometimes he wondered how someone as pessimistic and brooding like him got lucky enough to get with someone as energetic and full of life as you. Despite everything you've endured in this cruel, unforgiving world, you remained optimistic, hopeful, full of life.

You remained his happy girl.

“Incrível,” you replied happily. “Just follow my lead, okay?”

“Alrigh',” Daryl responded. He tried his best to follow your slow movements, trying to get it perfect for you just to hear that beautiful laugh of yours again.

When he had asked you to teach him how to do one of your traditional dances, you had excitedly pulled him aside to teach him something called a Samba, even if the music wasn't exactly the best to do it to. From what you had told him, you were only teaching him the basics. Basic footwork and basic handwork.

Basic my ass, he thought to himself as he struggled to follow your lead. He had never danced before and was beginning to realise that he had two left feet when it came to this activity. However, despite having been trying to teach him for half an hour, you refused to write him up as a lost cause. You'd simply smile brightly, beautiful eyes sparkling up at him while you reassured him that he would get it right soon. You were endearing to him like that.

Surprisingly, Daryl had managed to follow your instructions without any hiccups this time around. He had actually done pretty well, considering his inability to dance. He was kind of proud of himself. And so were you.

“Bom trabalho, garoto lindo! Você está conseguindo!” you exclaimed happily, throwing yourself into his arms and hugging him tightly.

Ignoring the looks the other shallow minded Alexandrians were sending his way, he smiled softly and embraced you gently. He wasn't one for public displays of affection, preferring to keep that part of your lives private. However, when you were this excited and sent him that absolutely radiant smile of yours, he couldn't be bothered. You were his perfect girl.

“Peach, ya know I love it when ya speak Portuguese, but yer strictly English speaking partner needs a translation,” he whispered into your long, curly hair, smiling at the giggle you let out.

“Sorry. I was just saying that you were doing it. You completed one basic Samba routine,” you explained, pulling back from the hug to look at him. “I'm so proud of you. You'll be doing full Samba routines with me in no time.”

Daryl gave you a small smile. “M'lookin' forward to it,” he responded, suddenly looking quite nervous. “But m'done fer tonigh'. Vamos para casa, linda.”

You gasped in surprise, before smiling widely. “Daryl, did you just—”

“Speak Portuguese?” he finished for you, nodding hesitantly. “Yeah. I found a book and have been tryna learn fer ya. Y'know, so ya can speak yer language more often and have someone understand ya.”

Happy tears started to well up in your eyes. You stepped forward and softly embraced him, resting your head against his chest.

“Muito obrigada. I love you so much,” you whispered against his chest.

A beat of silence passed. Daryl pressed a soft kiss to the top of your head, feeling his heart begin to flutter uncontrollably. He closed his eyes and focused really hard, recalling one of the first things he taught himself to say in your language.

“Eu também te amo.”

A Little Ass and a Lotta Sass Chapter 26: Husband. Negan Is My Husband. Maybe If I Keep Saying It OVER and OVER It Will Sink In?

Unfortunately for my- husband, shit that sounds so fucking weird, we did not get started on the honeymoon immediately. There was a party going on in our honor, and between food and dancing, my family intended for us to experience a REAL wedding. I like to think that Dad was cockblocking his son-in-law as retaliation for all the digs about the baby, but I’d never tell Negan that.

I danced with Dad, smiling up at him as he told me how beautiful I looked. Sure, like a bloated whale decked in white. We talked about the baby, he wanted to know if Negan had been able to feel them move yet, and as if the baby had suddenly woke up in a snit and wanted to piss Daddy off, it kicked. HARD. And Dad’s face lit up.

“WOW,” Dad practically screamed, all eyes focusing on us. “Baby’s a strong one.” His hand was covering the part of my bump that my tiny terror’s foot had slammed into. I hadn’t even told Dad that Negan hadn’t experienced the very thing that he was drawing attention to, but suddenly the expectant Daddy was at my side.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” He growled, eyes on Dad’s hand. “Did my baby just fucking-” He was glaring at my bump like it was housing a traitor and I was holding back laughter. “Fuck.” He kneeled in front of me, ignoring Dad’s hand and started to have an entire fucking conversation with the little demon inside. “Look here, you little shit. Daddy has been waiting fucking MONTHS to feel you move. And you go and give Pappy Rick the fucking privilege? I swear, you’re gonna be fucking grounded before you even leave your fucking mother’s womb. I’d be scared, little one, very very scared, because Daddy’s pissed. At you.”

We had an audience again. Most were doing their damnedest to keep in the obvious laughter that was threatening to overcome them, but a few, like Michonne, weren't willing to hold it back. It bubbled out of her, and Negan turned his glare on her. Far from stopping her laughter, it actually made her laugh harder. And I had to join in. The intensity of his irritation was too fucking much.

“Traitor,” he whispered, to the baby and me, as he rose up and took me into his arms. The music hadn’t stopped, but clearly Dad’s turn was over. He pressed his lips against mine, stopping the giggles effectively. As he spun me around, who fucking knew he could dance, his scowl slowly disappeared.

The first time, since we’d arrived in Alexandria, that we’d been able to be alone-ish. And he was looking at me like it was the first time he’d ever seen me at all. With my arms around his shoulders, and his around my lower back, we stared at one another. Husband and wife. And for the very first time since I’d been told about his plurals, about Lucille, about everything that had made me so resistant to this, I didn’t think about myself in relation to THEM. The ones that came before me. The ones that were gone. Because, looking up at Negan in this light, with Mom’s wedding rings flashing in the sun on my finger, it didn’t feel strange anymore. It just felt right. “I meant it, you know?” He said quietly, smiling down at me. “Every fucking word, every fucking vow. All of it.”

“Even the part where you threatened to ground our fetus?” I smirked up at him, still deflecting because that would always be who I was.

He snorted, and lowered his head to kiss me. “Especially that part.” He pulled back and I could see how dark his eyes were turning. “I love you. I should have told you a million times, but-”

I shook my head. “We both should have told one another, but I knew that you did.” He raised an eyebrow. “The words weren’t all that important, Negan, I mean they are, but your actions have always spoken louder.”

He thought about what I was saying, and I could see him thinking of every way he’d shown me. And then, I could almost tell when he started reliving all the ways that I’d shown him. I was pretty sure that only half of his memories were when we were naked and tangled up in one another, because every time I thought about how Negan showed me, we had most of our clothes on.

The song ended, and Carl took Negan’s place with a tap on his shoulder. And Negan didn’t even growl at him or glare. Progress, I tell ya. My baby brother was smiling at me with bemusement.

“Got any names picked out yet?” He asked, glancing down at his niece or nephew’s accommodations. I shook my head, we hadn’t really gotten that far. “My suggestion? Don’t let Negan choose.” I had a fit of giggles when Carl’s eyes landed on Lucille leaning against the table we’d sat at.

As the men in my life took turns spinning me around the dance floor-Aaron, Eric, Eugene, and even Daryl- I watched Negan mingle with the community I’d left behind for him. No one seemed to show the same tension or strain as before, almost seeming to just accept him standing among them. He and Dad were watching me as I danced around the improvised dance floor. And if pregnant women glow, then so do expectant dads and grandpas.

We had gifts to open. And I swear, great minds must think alike, because I had almost a full fucking set of forks by the time all of them were open. Did they match? No. But clearly, everyone truly fucking loved the story of me, the fork, and the stabbing that left me permanently branded. The one that I have to say I loved the most, was from Negan. How he’d managed to find this ornate, almost regal looking fucking fork was beyond me, but find it he had. And as I shook my head, the glare that had been locked on my face after the fifth fucking fork I opened dropped, and I knew that while everyone else had carried the joke too fucking far, Negan wanted me to know that even if I was fucking crazy, I was his type of fucking crazy.

There was a cake, and seeing the topper made questions come bubbling to mind. And then Daryl’s eyes met mine, and I knew exactly who found it, and my laughter rang out. Negan was staring at it like he was trying to decide whether to be pissed or impressed, but finally even he had to admit the hilarity.

My family had done this. Brought this together, with Negan’s help certainly, but they pulled it off. Even if they didn’t necessarily understand Negan and I, how we came together or why it had to be us, they showed us both that they approved. That they supported us. And that, as fucking weird as it may be, Negan was one of us now.

The party ended eventually. Too dark to head back to the Sanctuary, Negan scooped me up after I picked up Lucille, and carried me back to the former Monroe house. Once he had me carried over the threshold safely, he lowered me to the floor, kicked the door shut, and showed me a smile that sent tingles running all over my body. We’d come to what he’d been so eager for since we said ‘I do’. The honeymoon.

Human history is rich with hair trends, for centuries it has been cut, coloured and covered, styled, shaped and shown off. As Lauren Pilippon stated, “hairstyling is a genuine art form: it symbolically represents our transition from unkempt barbarians to civilised social beings. We are the only animals on the planet to give our hair so much care and attention”. As our priorities have shifted from the days of mere survival, self-consciousness has become a major factor in our growth as humans and, whilst it may be considered a vanity, our hair has become a great concern of ours. In its most rudimentary state, hair provides protection from the sun’s UV rays and is a source of insulation in cooler climates. Inherently hair represents youth, vitality and fertility, making it a great point of sexual attraction when seeking a mate. Beyond that we have placed our own meanings, connotations, rules and prejudices on the stuff, we spend hours altering its physical state and as of 2018, the global haircare market was estimated to be worth about $87.9 billion. The transformative power of hair has raised the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth from unknown beauties to Hollywood icons. Hayworth (born Margarita Carmen Cansino) changed her hair from dark brown to auburn and had an electrolysis treatment to alter her hairline whilst Monroe was famed for her platinum tresses which she got retouched every Saturday, flying her colourist from San Diego to Los Angeles every week. We idolise celebrities’ hair in the modern world in a very similar way to how the ancient Romans worshipped that of their gods and goddesses; one major difference however is that we have access to our idols. A growing phenomenon of the 20th and 21st century has been the auctioning of hair, with the record standing at $115,000 for a few strands of Elvis Presley’s hair. In these cases hair has performed as both a tool for self protection and a sentimental object to be preserved, its purpose is simultaneously functional and decorative; it must be for this reason that hair has become such a valuable tool to humans.

Hair has had a long history as a financial source. When wigs reached their height of extravagance in the 1770s, they required masses of real hair to build. Whilst some people in financially vulnerable positions would sell their hair to wig makers, many cases of hair-stealing crimes emerged. Some people were wrongly informed that hair removal was a medical treatment for fever, others were captured and had their hair forcibly removed. While cases like these are rare in Europe today, still in some Eastern cultures the selling of hair is commonplace practice. The non-consensual cutting of hair has been used in places such as c19th prisons and the Nazi concentration camps as an instrument of humiliation and control. Sociologist Anthony Synnott declared, hair is “a powerful symbol of the self”, with this in mind the removal of hair is a form of stripping away a part of ourselves. A warder at mill bank prison told Henry Mayhew (journalist and social reformer) that many inmates “[especially female prisoners] would rather lose their lives than their hair!”. Cases such as these are valuable sources to study when considering the psychological impact our hair has on us and why we still give it so much importance today.

Hair has been strongly influenced by religion for centuries, but much like hair’s place in politics, this has shifted warped throughout time. In the English civil war, hairstyles became highly factionalised. The oppositions the Cavaliers and the Roundheads’ hair provided a symbol for their opposing ideologies. The long-haired Cavaliers believed in political and religious orthodoxy, they fought for the continuation of royalism as the divine right of kings proved royalty to be closest to god. Contradicting these beliefs were the cropped-haired Roundheads, parliamentarians by cause, they stood as revolutionaries for the partial democratisation of the British administration. These two sides utilised their appearance to express either rebellion or conservatism in a way that has been mimicked in waves throughout history and still today- it would be worth studying the origins of the punk movement with the use of hair to reflect rebellion. In other cases it is seen to be the cropped or shaven hair that is more holy. The early Christian church tried to stop people from wearing wigs, especially women as it was seen to be an offense to chastity and a visible connection with illicit pleasures to wear such an embellishment on the head. In the first century AD, Clement of Alexandria stated that it was impossible to receive the priest’s blessing offered by laying his hands over the head as the benediction could not pass through the hair of a stranger. This attitude was further reflected in the second century by the early Christian author, Tertullian, who believed that the personal disguise provided by a wig was adulterous even writing that “all wigs are such disguises and inventions of the devil… if you will not throw away you false hair as hateful to Heaven, let me make it hateful to you by reminding you that it may well have come from the head of a damned person or an unclean person” . These attitudes of the church were consistent across centuries with the Council of Constantinople even excommunicating a number of wig-wearing Christians in 692 AD. Whilst this is seemingly a more forceful dictation of how one must present in the church, for Buddhist monks, the act of shaving one's head embodies the humility and willingness to renounce earthly cares that are required of the religious practice. This therefore stands as an initiation process to shift the cause of one’s life. It would be worth exploring the sacrifice of hair in a consensual act, such as in this religious process,when studying the symbolism hair holds in our earthly lifestyles.

Different cultural movements through the ages have provided wildly opposing hairstyles and attitudes towards hair. In the 60s, influenced by bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, a trend of longer, free growing hair swept the world. Music genres like glam rock and punk brought in their own aesthetics, heavily influencing the way hair was worn by both genders. And the anti establishment ideologies of the 60’s inspired wearing ones natural hair in a free afro style. However, perhaps the largest and most influential hair trend of the twentieth century was the 1920s bob. In 1909 Antoine de Paris cut the hair of French actress Eva Lavallière, whilst the trend didn't gain momentum for around a decade, the work of this one hairstylist provided a foundation for radical change to grow. The 1920s bobbed hair phase provided women with a hairstyle that both visually represented and practically supported the emergence of womens’ liberation. Singer Mary Garden was in her 50s when she cut her hair and she wrote of the experience to have a profound effect on how she viewed her role as a woman. “Bobbed hair is a state of mind and not merely a new manner of dressing my head” she stated, “to my way of thinking, long hair belongs to the age of general feminine helplessness. Bobbed hair belongs to the age of freedom, frankness, and progressiveness.” Former trends from the Victorian and Edwardian eras were characterised by the abundance of accessories including postiches, padding and ornaments. The bob offered a complete antithesis to these fashions. The style embodied the freedom and youthfulness that characterised the ‘new woman’, it worked with new technological advancements such as the car, which had an open top which would have ruined a victorian padded coiffure. It also reflected the shorter, swinging hemlines that characterised the new style of dress. It was accessible to all and cheap to maintain, meaning women had far more time to do other things. The new style wasn't entirely accepted with open arms however. In 1923 a report appeared in the newspaper that some hairdressers refused to cut bobs for women unless they were married and their husband approved due to great backlash many of them received from the men in their client’s lives. Issues became more serious in situations like that of Mexico city in 1924 when the Archbishop denounced the bobbed fashion and excluded women with the style from church. Some self-appointed vigilantes took it upon themselves to seek out the wearers of the style and forcibly shave them as a punishment. This resulted in a mass of riots across the city between armed soldiers and many students. An even worse case of intolerance came later in the 1920s in China where the execution of women with these short styles was introduced; it was interpreted as evidence for the support of oppositional politics. This hairstyle change took place in an era of great societal shift. Whether the style was a product that adapted to this new female behaviour, or the style itself encouraged a new way of living, it's not clear; what is clear however is that it signified a great turning point in gender politics. The new ‘boyish’ look provided an opportunity for young women to take on roles that were previously only given to men, sparking opposition but ultimately forming a new path for the modern woman to evolve. Specific movements like these can seem frivolous on the surface but under better scrutiny, we can find great power in the way hair has been used to oppose and change politics. I think this is a really interesting starting point to then consider the impact hair has on today’s world.

From classic literature to fairytales, folklore to films, hair has been a major part in creating a character’s identity. Classically tropes like blonde hair have been attributed to the good, innocent heroines of stories, her youth and purity, as well as charm and good luck signified by the fair hue meant she was promised the happy ending. Contrastingly the dark haired woman has always held an air of danger and fierceness. I think the classic stories we have all grown up hearing, whether they are fairy tales or old legends, could provide an interesting indicator for how we subconsciously judge hair still to this day. Through studying the ways in which the entertainment media depict hair, I believe we may be able to shine a light on many of our internalised stereotypes linked with hair and thus re educate our initial assumptions.

Hall of Master Folk Artists adds seven members

NATCHITOCHES – Seven musicians and folk artists were inducted into the Louisiana Folklife Center’s Hall of Master Folk Artists held at Northwestern State University on Saturday July 21 as part of the 39th Annual Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival. Inductees included Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and former Elvis Presley guitarist, James Burton, who also served as Honorary Festival Chair, Burton’s fellow band mate in Elvis Presley’s band, Estelle Brown of the Sweet Inspirations, Elvis Presley’s original drummer, D.J. Fontana, Natchitoches musician/promoter/philanthropist Rodney Harrington, folk artist Clementine Hunter, musician and craftsman Hilton Lytle, and rockabilly musician Jim Oertling.

Dr. Tommy Ike Hailey, associate professor of anthropology and director of the Cultural Resource Office at NSU, accepted on behalf of Oertling who was unable to attend. Phyllis Liberto accepted on behalf of her uncle, D.J. Fontana, who was inducted posthumously, and Stephanie Sewell, accepted on behalf of her great grandmother, Clementine Hunter, also inducted posthumously. Hunter’s granddaughter, Deloris Sewell, and Hunter’s great granddaughter, Diane Brown, were also in attendance.

Dr. Shane Rasmussen, director of the Louisiana Folklife Center at NSU, took part in the induction ceremony. Dignitaries included Natchitoches City Council members Sylvia Morrow and Dale Nielsen, Kelvin Porter from the office of State Rep. Kenny Cox, and Jerrie Ledoux from the office of U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson. Honorary Festival Chair James Burton was born in Dubberly, but he grew up in Shreveport. At 14, James went professional and at 15 cut the famous record “Suzie Q.” This soon led to a regular gig on the Louisiana Hayride radio show, which, in turn, led to Burton's joining the band of Bob Luman, a rockabilly and country singer. From there, Burton went on to play with Ricky Nelson, which solidified Burton's place in the Hollywood rock 'n' roll universe, and he started getting calls for recording sessions. Burton also found time to record with artists like Dean Martin, Bobby Darin and The Everly Brothers, and become a key figure in the group of session musicians referred to as ‘The Wrecking Crew.’

In 1969, Burton got a call from Elvis Presley to form him a band. Burton acted as band leader and would remain with Elvis until The King’s untimely death in 1977. After Elvis’ passing, Burton went on to tour with numerous artists, including Emmylou Harris, John Denver, Jerry Lee Lewis, Kenny Rogers, Elvis Costello and Johnny Cash.

Burton has been inducted into many honorable institutions such as The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, The Musicians Hall of Fame, The Country Music Hall of Fame, The Rockabilly Hall of Fame, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (inducted by Keith Richards) and is also a Grammy winner.

Burton heads the James Burton Foundation which is dedicated to providing musical instruments to children in schools, hospitals, civic programs, and to veterans. Burton received his first guitar at a young age and he believes in giving to help a new generation of players. He still tours the world every year playing his guitar and is honored to be an ambassador for the great state of Louisiana.

Fifty years ago Brown and some friends formed the Sweet Inspirations, an all-girl vocal group, and the girls quickly became the “go to” backing group for the top Atlantic Records artists including Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, Dusty Springfield, Dion Warwick, and Jimi Hendrix. Brown and the Sweets’ distinctive harmonies can be heard on some of the most iconic songs in music history, including “Chain of Fools,” “Natural Woman,” “Brown Eyed Girl,” “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Do You Know the Way to San José,” to name but a few. The group also toured and performed their own music, including the hit song, “Sweet Inspiration.”

In 1969, Elvis Presley invited the Sweet Inspirations to be a part of his band and they toured with him until his death in 1977, performing more than 1,000 shows with the King. Brown moved to Louisiana several years ago and has immersed herself in the area’s music and culture performing with her old Elvis Presley band mate, James Burton and Johnny Earthquake and The Moondogs. She helps raise money for music related charities, and appears on television and in schools sharing the history of rock & roll and rhythm & blues which she was such an integral part of and telling about of her life and times performing with the King of Rock & Roll and the Queen of Soul.

Harrington has been intimately involved in Louisiana music for over 30 years. As a performer, he has been the front man for Johnny Earthquake and The Moondogs since the band’s inception nearly 25 years ago. The band has recorded extensively touring throughout the South, spreading the word about Natchitoches and Louisiana music wherever they play. The Moondogs have been referred to by music critics as “Quite simply, Louisiana’s best show band.”

As a songwriter, Harrington has written and recorded several original songs about the area, its music and culture, including “Cane River Blues,” “Reflections on the Cane” and “This Is Our Town,” an ode to his hometown of Natchitoches.

As a philanthropist, Harrington has served and continues to serve on the board of several music related charities and has worked tirelessly to raise funds to further music-related causes, such as buying musical instruments for school children.

As a promoter/producer, Harrington has promoted and produced many major concerts and musical events, including the Natchitoches Jazz/R&B Festival, for which he has served on the board for 22 years and as chairman for the past several years.

As a radio host, Harrington has hosted the syndicated radio program “Jammin’ with Johnny - The Johnny Earthquake Show” for nearly 20 years. The program is the only one in north Louisiana which features live local and area musicians on a regular basis.

Christened in March 1887 on a plantation in Marco, Hunter’s family moved to Melrose Plantation around the turn of the last century to work as sharecroppers. Until her death on January 1, 1988, her life had been the environs of Melrose Plantation on Cane River below Natchitoches.

Hunter’s first paintings were documented in December 1939. Self-taught with the encouragement and inspiration of Francois Mignon, her styles evolved from paintings on paper to eventually works the size of The African House Murals, which in dramatic style tells the story of life at Melrose Plantation in the 1950s.

Although she never learned to read or write, Hunter’s art has left a legacy of life on a Louisiana plantation from the perspective of an insider. Despite her lack of formal training, Hunter was able to depict with her paint brushes work in the cotton fields and pecan orchards, Monday wash days with a big open kettle boiling the clothes, the experience of Saturday Night at the honky tonk and the spiritual power of religion. Her paintings will forever document life on a southern plantation for future generations to know the hard work, happiness, and community of life.

A respected instrument builder, Lytle grew up in Jena, where he learned the names of all the area’s trees. This knowledge of wood led to his crafting toys and eventually musical instruments. After serving overseas in World War II, he attended Texas A&M, where he majored in industrial education, completed a master’s degree and pursued his doctorate. He returned to Louisiana and worked as a vocational counselor. His last position was with the vocational technical school for over 20 years in Monroe, where he retired. With the help of his late wife, Nancy, he began to build musical instruments.

As a child, Lytle built his first cigar box fiddle with strings from a screen door, and in 1970 he built his first violin by consulting Foxfire books. He learned more instrument-building techniques from Doc Savage of Monroe. His specialty is producing violins with exceptionally beautiful tones using a special “tap-toning” technique that he developed. He has completed more than 900 instruments, including guitars, Dobros, mandolins, banjos, violas, cellos and violins. His skills led to participation as a featured artist at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Arkansas, where he demonstrated instrument building as a master craftsman, taught apprentices, and helped establish the Music Roots Program to which he has donated more than 400 instruments. He frequently participated in stage shows there, performing his own “Geriatric Blues” with his harmonica and wash tub bass.

Lytle continues his craft, having built 764 violins, most of which he has given to young musicians who could not afford to purchase them. He knows where every single one of his violins has ended up. He’s intent on passing down what he’s learned to a new generation of luthiers and has helped many build their own fiddles. Fiddles made Lytle were given away to two contestants of this year’s Louisiana State Fiddle Championship, also part of the Festival. Owen Meche of Alexandria was the beneficiary of a ¾ fiddle donated by Lytle. Cameron Fontenot of Eunice was also the recipient of a handmade Lytle fiddle, donated by Carl and Joyce Parker of Downsville. Rasmussen remarked that Lytle has helped revitalize fiddle playing throughout Louisiana. “We are indebted to his tireless efforts and kindness to so many. His fiddles are works of art.” 2018 Grand Fiddle Champion Clancey Stewart, who has known Hilton Lytle for several years, remarked that “Hil is one of the sweetest older men you will ever meet, and he has a huge heart for younger people. He brings new experiences into people’s lives.”

Louisiana-born Jim Oertling never landed that fish he battled in his epic 1963 swamp rocker “Old Moss Back,” but that rollicking single and a clutch of other classics landed him in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in 1997. The Louisiana native spent his formative years in San Antonio, but immersed himself in swamp culture during long summer vacations at his grandfather’s house in Bayou Lacombe, where he conceived the idea for “Old Moss Back.” Oertling was a student at Louisiana State University in 1963 when he entered Cosimo Matassa’s famed New Orleans recording studio to cut his twangy fish tale and biggest song. It was during this time that he wrote and recorded the rockabilly classics “Old Mossback,” “Louisiana Gambler,” and “Back Forty Blues,” among others. After decades spent as “a bull rider, cattle ranch foreman, combat infantry officer, commercial banker, and always an outdoorsman,” Oertling was back on the music scene in 2013 with the release of “Mossback Revisited,” a mix of rockabilly, ballads, Tex-Mex, and more. Oertling’s performance at the 2015 Ponderosa Stomp marked his first major appearance since meandering into nonmusical pursuits. Oertling’s fans came from all over the world to hear him at the Rock ‘N’ Bowl. He still takes every opportunity he can to perform his songs in front of appreciative audiences.

Fontana was born on March 15, 1931 in Shreveport, and began his incredible career as a staff drummer on the Louisiana Hayride in 1953. It was while working on the Hayride in 1954 that Elvis Presley invited Fontana to sit in with his guitar and bass player, Scotty Moore and Bill Black. Elvis loved Fontana's playing, invited him to go on the road with him, and the first Rock & Roll rhythm section in history, sometimes called The Blue Moon Boys, was formed.

Fontana, Elvis, and the Boys traveled all over the South playing for anyone who would pay them for a couple of years. They would all cram into a big Buick belonging to Scotty's wife, tie Bill Black's stand-up bass to the roof, and head to the next gig. After the group began recording hit records and Elvis exploded on to the national scene in the late 50's, the group's mode of transportation and the venues they played improved dramatically.

Fontana played behind Elvis on the Dorsey Brothers' Stage Show, the Milton Berle Show, the Steve Allen Show, the Frank Sinatra Show, Elvis' 1968 Comeback TV Special and, most famously, the Ed Sullivan Show. Fontana was also a guest on the Conan O'Brien Show and the Elvis Tribute TV Show in 1994. Fontana played on approximately four hundred and sixteen RCA tracks with Elvis, which resulted in millions of record sales and countless #1, gold and platinum discs. Along the way, Fontana performed for and with such great artists as Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Ringo Starr, Ron Wood, Jerry Lee Lewis, Dolly Parton, Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins, Porter Waggoner, Cheap Trick, Waylon Jennings and many others.

Fontana received many awards, including a Grammy nomination, the Nashville Music Award for Best Independent Album of the Year in 1998, placement on the Beale Street Walk of Fame in Memphis in 1999, and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.

There are now 110 members in the Hall of Master Folk Artists, which was started in 1981. This year’s festival theme was “Celebrating Louisiana’s Folk Roots” which celebrated the many tradition bearers in Louisiana. The Festival is held annually in air-conditioned Prather Coliseum on the Northwestern State University campus. Next year’s Festival will be held on July 26-27, 2019. The 2019 theme “Vive la Louisiane!” will celebrate the many young people keeping tradition alive in Louisiana, and will include performers such as the Bruce Daigrepont Cajun Band, Tab Benoit, the Cajun Tradition Band, the Rayo Brothers, Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue, Goldman Thibodeaux and the Lawtell Playboys, Hardrick Rivers and the Rivers Revue Band, Ed Huey, a Cajun accordion workshop and the annual Louisiana State Fiddle Championship. Memoirs of Lola

Written on April 15, 1998, by my grandmother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and passed away in August 2014. She was born on May 19, 1926, in Springfield, Tenn., to George and Lennie Miller. She has lived in Alexandria most of her lifetime. She and her late husband Orville Wright farmed east of Alexandria for several years. She was a member of the Omega Nu Tau Sorority formerly in Alexandria. She was a longtime and active member of the Alexandria First United Methodist Church where was a member of the robed choir. Lola had been a member of the Girls Scouts of America since the age of 10 all the way through senior scouts. Lola researched her family history to discover that she had an ancestor, Thomas Farmer, who was a Revolutionary War soldier, which enabled her to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was privileged to discover Thomas Farmer’s headstone near family burial plots in Tennessee. Lola had also worked as a columnist for the Alexandria Times-Tribune.

A large two-story home on Monroe Street in Alexandria, Indiana when I was five years old; this is one of my earliest memories. Nothing of consequence before that. We had been given a Spitz dog which we named Fluffy and we loved her, all seven of us children, with Mom and Dad.

We had a hill going down, just steps from our back door, and we used to ride our ‘push-mobiles’ -- homemade vehicles invented by my brothers that were powered using a broom handle to push -- and coasting down that long, long hill.

The world was far away, but a home-built radio, by brother George, told occasionally of things like the kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh’s baby, the catching of Bruno Hauptmann, the abdication of King Edward of England so he could marry a divorcee, Wallis Simpson Warfield, the Hindenburg disaster, and about the president of the United States, President Franklin Roosevelt.

The home on Monroe Street was the first home to be bought in Alexandria and we all helped, even in very small ways, to pay the $11.00 per month payments to a Mr. Couch. There were three other rentals before this, all in this small, central Indiana town. The move from Tennessee was made by train and interurban in mid-1929.

My most vivid memories were of our busy home life, with Brother and I keeping wood chopped and ready for the heating and cooking stoves. We planted and tended a large garden (in railroad property) down the alley; picking and canning quarts of ‘end o garden’ veggies for the winter. Always helping Mother with quilts which were usually made of castoffs cut into squares and backed with outing flannel. Best of all, we were interested in our school books and assignments, and thankfully, were good students. Our clothes (especially during the Great Depression) were meager, at best, as well as our meals. Out of the seven children, three were high school valedictorians, one salutatorian and others in the top 3% of the class.

Another vivid memory of mine came about on the 4th of July while we were young. The older boys would work for money to buy fireworks and set off many a tin can lightning into the air and bursting into flames. After setting a 1.5-inch firecracker under the edge, they lit the fuse and stood back to see it go smoking into the air and land we knew not where. When home displays came to be considered too dangerous, I felt sorry that youngsters were to be deprived of this great holiday sight.

I greatly enjoyed playing with a neighbor girl, Helen, and being in Girl Scouts. One year we were actually able to afford one week at G.S. summer camp due to the generosity of a sister, Louise.

One memory of early childhood that was quite pleasing was with the dog, Fluffy. She was pure white, so when she needed a bath it was quite obvious. We were given the okay to bathe her in the bathtub, with her own drying cloths, including a ragged half-sheet; after she was rinsed and set on the linoleum and dried with the white sheet, she was then quite sure she did not want anyone to touch her as she knew she was clean and untouchable (for a half-day or so). It was like she was stuck up.

One thing I learned in a comical way, the brother just older, Pat, and I used to argue quite a lot until Dad tired after one dumb spat and told us we were to kiss each other as punishment; we both declared, “NO WAY!”, and I remember that that was the last dispute of any consequence between us.

A very bad accident happened about 1932 when our Dad was helping to build a scaffolding at Stillwell’s Gravel Pit to a height of 19 feet and fell off, landing on his feet; causing ankle, knee, and hip joint fractures. He was on crutches for many months and was told he would never walk again, but he did. He went back to a cane later in life, in his Golden Years.

The siblings in our Miller family could be described as loyal, caring and close-knit for many years, but rivalry and other disagreements would later arise. No doubt, this happens in the best of families. Pat, third youngest, was an epileptic, and at times, he needed extra attention. Fred had crossed eyes which drew jeers from his peers, causing family concerns, too. He had eye surgery at age 16, funded by brother George.

I remember my Grandmother and Grandfather Miller in Springfield, Tennessee best. When we visited them they had all this big farmland where we could run and investigate, complete with a creek. Also, when we were there, all the other Miller relatives would come on Sunday afternoon and bring freezers and we would make ice cream with the milk from the cows that Grandpa milked. Grandpa had lost a thumb when a mule, Ol’ Jim, had spooked and ran away with the reins taking Grandpa’s thumb with him. His milking without that thumb was an amazement to me.

Holidays were pretty much routine for us as we never got to go anyplace special. We dressed up a little more than usual to go to church, though. However, I was often asked by the Sullivans, Helen’s parents Dick and Dorothy, to go with them to a wilderness/woods near Wabash, Indiana to Frances’ Slocum birthplace, later to become a State Park, for hiking and picnicking. The wonder of F. Slocum being taken away at a young age by a band of Indians and never returning was a scary thing. I later learned that she was found in her old age by two brothers and she chose to stay with her Indian family.

- In 1835 Slocum revealed to a visitor that she was a white woman who had been captured at five years old, and two years later, in September 1837, three of Slocum's siblings came to see her. They confirmed that she was their sister, but Slocum chose to stay with her Miami family in Indiana. Slocum fully assimilated into the Native American culture and was accepted as one of its members. -

In 5th grade, I wrote a two-act play that was chosen by classmates to be acted out. It was called, “The Robins’ Busy Day” with Mr. and Mrs. Robin, Reddie, Ruddy, and Ruby. I still have a copy. I also remember flying kites with Pat; repairing and making some new ones using homemade paste made with flour and water. Mom made the best paste.

A special trip that I recall was in 1939. I went with my sister and brother-in-law and my niece to New York and Connecticut. We went to the Worlds’ Fair and on an afternoon cruise on Long Island Sound. We saw the Tryon and Perisphere, symbols of the Fair, and saw them again from the ship. On one of our trips back to the state of our ‘roots’, Tennessee, we had car trouble. Dad had replaced a tube in the right front tire the day before we left and had not gotten the lug nuts back on tight so the wheel tire tube fell off somewhere near Hope, Indiana. At the time, the town name was the only hope we had to drive on ‘til someone came by who had a tire jack and we could get the tire back on and proceed on our trip south, most joining in a chorus of ‘Back Home in Tennessee’.

OH YES, we were a musical family. While living in one of the rentals in east Alexandria, our family combined singing talent into...

...knockers with notched edges, with a tied-on-string to wrap and pull on a door or window at Halloween. Soaping windows or throwing eggs was a no-no back then. I liked to play softball on a corner lot with neighbor kids; also swim at Beulah Park pool. I learned to make fudge about this time and another friend and I would visit for the night and make a batch. We got to making it very good.

Without reservation I would say, I love my whole family, starting with parents, George and Lennie Ethel Miller, siblings, their families and especially my own children and grandchildren. My second love would be my country, the United States of America.

An airplane flew over my house at dawn today.

It was a small one. The dawn airplane would not be unusual... 10 years ago... as the early morning small airplane flyover happened everyday at dawn, on it’s way towards the north, then return at about 4:00 pm to towards the south.

I can’t recall when, but at some point, the early morning airplane to the north at sunrise, stopped happening everyday at dawn. The timing seems to have been all the changed, as the return flight south of that small airplane at about 4:00 pm continues. I am not seeing or hearing the airplane at dawn, instead, it’s either taking a different route, or is on a different schedule than usual.

Last night at about midnight, I took a walk out to the mailbox with two big framing hammers, 26 oz Vaughn “California Framer” and a lighter, 22 oz Eastwing demo hammer.

I needed to open the mailbox.

Joe Biden glued the fucking mailbox shut, so, hammers... have to open the mailbox.

On the way there, at the part of my driveway near my gate where I call it “The Valley of Death”, is where I encountered the terrorist bitch who Joe Biden ordered to be sent here to fuck with me.

“Who are you?” I said, sternly.

“It’s not Rick... nix is caught” replied a combination of live words and electronic communication device utterances from the intruding terrorists Christian Pirate assassin bitch that Joe Biden sent here, with super glue.

The assassin was wearing a “Pixel Suit” invisible camouflage electronic suit, laying on the ground at the edge of my driveway.

“THUD”... I said.

Then, someone at Monroe’s front porch said “play the tape”, then, a repeat of “Who are you” and “It’s not Rick... nix is caught” and “THUD” (then “Ooof!”) and “idiot” was heard from over there, about 200 feet away.

I walked briskly back to my house. There was some movement about three feet away from me as I walked through the Valley of Death near my driveway gate.

I checked the car door, it’s glued shut also, have to get a bigger hammer for that.

There was no mail in the mailbox, just air in there.

The Superglue on everything causes a situation where the victim needs to undo what was glued shut, and in that confusion, that moment of “what the fuck is going on with this fucking thing... it’s stuck... hmmm... darn... ok... pull this... smack this over here... shit... I broke it some more... have to get a hammer”... that is when the Democrat terror bastards attack with a sword, after flooding the area with poison gasses.
