The fact that Shenhe is often mistaken as an adeptus just because of how divinely beautiful she is and her general aura makes me think about Chongyun growing up to be just... so pretty. such a pretty boy. so ethereal and soft that people would think he's an adeptus. it's in the exorcist genes, it's a nephew-aunt thing. It helps that he greatly admires Xiao and that he's a little introverted. people would end up thinking that chongyun distances himself but he's really just a shy, popsicle-loving, diligent boy. Chongyun's light features and attitude just works so well... Xingqiu would have to be that friend that deals with all of his admirers, meanwhile Chongyun's a little oblivious to it all.

I'm posting my silly headcanons

Here's an introduction to my genshin au, yes it's modern but I may have interpretated a few things, first of all, it's known as Modernized magic au (Acronym: MMAu)

Next hcs: Nationalities!

To start off, Venti, Zhongli, Ei & Makoto, Nahida, Furina, Murata, Tsaritsa and other god-like characters are all disguised as humans. (Makoto lives in this au)

The Fatui is the mafia for this au.

Sandrone and Dottore are related. (Uncle and niece) (Fun fact: Dottore got arrested for physical violence because he protected Sandrone)

Alrecchino and Eula are twin sisters.

Arlecchino has Spock/elf ears.

Xiangling, Xingqiu, Xu and Yelan are all siblings! (Xu is an npc but I gave him a vision, I see them as siblings)

Xiangling and Xingqiu are twins. (You cannot convince me to change this, I looked at their splasharts.)

Klee and Albedo are biological siblings. (Sue me.)

Sayu is 11 years old but she's in the eighth grade. (She's a smart kid/naturally gifted)

If there's a school play, you can always count on YunJin to operate it and it will always go according to plan.

Freminet had no friends, not until he was approached by Dori, who said she could pair him up with compatible people.

Lyney, Lynette and Freminet were all part of a travelling circus, which meant they were homeschooled by Caesar. (If you saw or played Lyney's story quest, you'd know who Caesar is, and yes, they're all biologically related in this au.)

Layla and Collei love to tease Bennett and Razor about their relationship.

Chongyun fell first but Xingqiu fell harder.

Aloy knows that Tartaglia's real job isn't a teacher. (They're siblings for a reason)

Aloy doesn't like being thrown in the dark, so when she was young, Tartaglia would often give her the attention she needs, despite the fact she was in elementary and he was in highschool, Teucer didn't mind anyway. (I feel bad for saying this since Aloy is neglected in game as well)

Furina(Focalors) had always loved Venti(Barbatos), after he "ascended" to Celestia, she believed she could never find him again... Well, she was wrong, she did find him.

Xinyan always thought why Lyney always had a face of guilt when they discuss about falling from high places. Maybe a bad memory?

HuTao watches over Qiqi since they're both adopted by Baizhu, HuTao always makes sure that Qiqi is close by or guarded by her best friends.

Kujou Sara is infertile so she adopted Bennett and YaoYao with Arataki Itto

Tsaritsa, Sucrose, Xiangling, Bennett, Dori and Diona are the student council.

Mika is a transmasc, he transitioned when he was young.

Freminet has a spade on his face as a birthmark, like his brother and sister.

Paimon, Lumine and Aether are all siblings. (I adore it when people give the three the sibling dynamic, they share a braincell.)

Chongyun has a yandere-ish side he won't show Xingqiu.

Tighnari adopted Collei and Razor before he married Cyno. (Cyno met Nari through Nilou, so technically, Cyno is a dad-dad, not stepdad.)

Nilou is the rich aunt and she places work before love so y'all know damn well she spoils her neice and nephew. (I love aroace Nilou)

Cyno and Nilou are siblings.

Arataki Itto and Kuku Shinobu are half-siblings. (Itto is about 4-5 years older than Shinobu. Itto's mom died so his dad remarried and then Shinobu came into the world, and Itto was protective of her during their highschool years)

Gaming and Chongyun are twin brothers. (Chongyun is the introvert and Gaming is the extrovert)

What’s with this “Tighnari and Cyno are siblings” bs? Because they said they are like siblings? And why are some people treating this as if only Asian countries use brother/sister as terms of endearment? Once again Twitter ruins other people’s perceptions of what American culture is actually like. Brother/sister and bro/sis are endearing here too, calling someone your bro doesn’t actually mean you’re related. Plus in many religions here we call everyone brother/sister. It’s not American culture, it’s just EN Twitter culture. No one calls Ayato and Itto brothers despite Itto calling him “my bro Ayato”, because they’re so obviously not brothers. Even if you ignore the fact that Tighnari and Cyno look nothing alike, don’t you think it’s a little weird that one of them is... idunno... HALF DOG?? And if Tighnari and Cyno were actually siblings, don’t you think it’d be important enough to mention in a voiceline?? Mika isn’t even out yet and we already know he’s Huffman’s little brother! I can at least understand thinking Diluc and Kaeya are brothers because most people only see the dogshit localization, so the only hint they’d get to the real relationship is the fact that Kaeya is still Kaeya Alberich and not Ragnvindr, but thinking Tighnari and Cyno are seriously brothers because they said they are “like siblings” is quite the leap for an average player.

Beidou has a large lightning scar over her left eye from her battle with Haishan.

Beidou and Ganyu are actually best friends in canon! Beidou's "About Ganyu" line says that the two of them "get on like a house on fire", they just don't talk about it much due to their reputations.

They hang out with Thoma whenever they're in Inazuma. They're best buds! Beidou brings him souvenirs from Dornman Port to remind him of Mondstadt.

Beidou and Ningguang exchange letters via Beidou's Red Vulture (yes, she tamed one). The vulture, Xun, is a regular sight in the skies of Liyue due to the amount of time Beidou's at sea.

She has a Devon Rex named Yijun. She reminds Beidou of Ningguang due to her affectionate personality (which is reserved for beidou only). Yijun only really lets Beidou and Yaoyao near her.

This is already canon, but short people aren't allowed to drink on the Alcor. Sorry Kazuha.

She wears braces on her arms.

Beidou and Ganyu are actually best friends in canon! Ganyu's "About Beidou" line says that she gets super angry when people talk crap about Beidou and has to restrain herself from snapping. They just don't talk about it much due to their reputations.

Narcoleptic 100%. She falls asleep in meetings all the time, but Keqing takes excessive notes to keep her updated on what she missed.

Qiqi gives them herbs whenever she sees them. All she knows is that Ganyu likes them, and Qiqi wants people to be happy.

Thank you for the request, and sorry for getting around to it so late! I'm slowly making my way through my list of requests. This was fun! I've never written for Chongyun before, and he also isn't a character I ever considered writing for, so this was definitely something new!

When Chongyun woke up in the dead of night, tangled in his sheets and sweating bullets, he knew he messed up. His guts felt like they were knotted up in an angry ball of cramps.

Groaning into his pillow, Chongyun rolled over in bed, digging his fist into his stomach. He waited for the cramp to pass with bated breaths, squeezing his eyes tightly shut. Finally the knot in his stomach seemed to ease up with an unhappy gurgle that he felt beneath his hands. Of course this was the consequences of his own actions.

He knew that his stomach had trouble tolerating any form of spicy food. Even something as mild as a bit of black pepper sprinkled over a dish, left him feeling uncomfortable within an hour of eating. So why on earth did he let his pride get to him that day?

It started when he stopped by Xiangling's family restaurant with Xingqui, shortly after they had finished their classes. The original plan had been to grab a juice or ice tea, lunch wasn't even on the agenda. But Xiangling had come bounding out, restaurant menu in hand.

"I've finally perfected my new recipe enough for dad to put it on the menu!" She had exclaimed without even greeting them first, slamming the menu down on the table. "You guys have to try it!"

How was Chongyun supposed to tell her no, he didn't like spicy food?

Another cramp had Chongyun curling into a fetal position with a weak groan. The pain was so intense it left him feeling lightheaded and dizzy. Putting an arm beneath him on the bed, he stiffly got up, cradling his bloated stomach with one hand. He had to try and take something for the pain. There was no way he'd get another wink of sleep that night, and he most certainly wouldn't be going to class the next day. Chongyun knew the routine for eating something he shouldn't. He wouldn't get much reprieve from the pain that night, and the majority of the next day he would probably spend sitting on the toilet. He was regretting his earlier actions so much.

With staggering steps, Chongyun trudged down the dark hallway of his apartment to the bathroom. He flipped the light switch with sweaty fingers, flinching back when the sudden light nearly blinded him. Once his eyes had adjusted to the darkness, Chongyun walked over to the medicine cabinet, pulling it open with a shaky hand. He grimaced when his stomach seemed to contract beneath his arm, grabbing the edge of the sink to keep himself upright. The pain had him seeing spots for a moment, before it tapered off again. His stomach let out a low, gurgling growl that Chongyun swore seemed to echo around the small bathroom.

His face grew a few shades paler, Chongyun redirected his attention to the medicine cabinet, bleary eyes searching for anything that might settle his stomach. The entire time, it felt like there was a blunt blade lodged in his abdomen.

With his mind preoccupied by the pain roiling in his gut, Chongyun didn't hear the footsteps on the tiled floor. He gasped, startled, when a hand suddenly touched his shoulder in a gentle manner. Chongyun staggered back, practically hugging his stomach. He looked up, squinting at the person standing in the bathroom with him

Oh right.

In his pain-fuelled haze, Chongyun had completely forgotten that his auntie Shenhe was staying over at his apartment that week. He must've woken her up with his racket — in all fairness, he was used to living alone.

"You are ill." Shenhe stated the obvious softly, her voice seemingly void of any emotion. She reached over, raising Chongyun's chin with one hand, while pressing the palm of the other to his forehead.

"I'm fine, Auntie, really." Chongyun panted softly, leaning his head into the cool comfort of her hand. "I'm not sick, I just have a really bad stomach ache." Hopefully she would leave it at that.

Shenhe stared at him a moment longer, the expression in her pale eyes unchanging, before she retracted her hand. Then she spoke again in her soft tone of voice. "Stomach aches are not supposed to be normal, you could very well be ill."

Chongyun tried to chuckle at her statement, but his face contracted in pain instead. He groaned softly, leaning forward and tightly wrapping both arms around his stomach. Shenhe's hands gently came to rest on his shoulders, and she guided him a few steps over to sit down on the edge of the bathtub.

"I just ate something I shouldn't have." Chongyun tried to explain through gritted teeth. "Xiangling's recipe had… way too many juyen chillies in it."

Shenhe was quiet for a moment. Chongyun wasn't sure if she heard what he has said, but her next words proved that she did.

"Very well, if that is the case. You should be more cautious of eating spicy food if your stomach has trouble handling it."

Chongyun almost laughed. "I try, Auntie, I do. It's not exactly intentional."

Shenhe hummed softly in response. "Shall I make you a cup of medical tea to help with the pain?"

"Auntie Shenhe, it's-" Chongyun looked over his shoulder at the clock on the bathroom wall. "-it's one in the morning. I'm fine, you can go back to bed." He closed his eyes for a moment when his vision swam. He felt nauseous.

Shenhe looked at him quizzically for a moment. "Why would I return to bed when you are clearly unwell?"

"I'll just take some painkillers, and go back to bed myself, really."

Shenhe seemed to consider this option. Chongyun was unable to read her expression as she gazed at him. Then, expression still unchanging, she shook her head.

"Medicinal tea will be better for settling your stomach than pills. It won't take any time for me to prepare."

She didn't exactly leave Chongyun with any time to respond, turning around and silently leaving the bathroom. Chongyun watched her disappear with an exasperated expression, before he chuckled softly, leaning his head over against the tiled wall. His Auntie Shenhe may seem emotionless and cold to others, but it was clear she cared, in her own unique way.

The doctor had already commissioned Shenhe's birthday present: an Inazuma-style hairpin of a five-petaled white flower in a black base with red accents, and when she traveled back to her homeland to pick it up, she couldn't help picking a few dendrobiums as well, using her vision to preserve their freshness until she'd made her way back to Liyue. Having asked beforehand if the quasi-Adeptus had a moment to spare and meet her on her birthday, Alice found herself a little nervous while waiting at the spot they'd decided on, mostly due to the bouquet of qingxins accented by dendrobiums in her hands that caught the eyes of many she'd walked past. And when the guest of honor arrived wearing that same, gorgeous dress, Alice found herself slightly tongue-tied. "M-Miss Shenhe!" She smiled despite the rise of color along her cheeks and offered her the flowers first. "Happy birthday!"

Her birthdays used to be a lonely, solemn thing. She remembers being happy, overjoyed even, to see her parents smile at her and wish her well. It was a vivid memory she wished would fade into the darkness that surrounded it. In the years following, Cloud Retainer would invite her and the other adepti for a feast amongst friends. It had taken Shenhe a few years to accept that these gatherings were meant to honor the day of her birth. Now, as she got more accustomed to Liyue Harbor's traditions, she learned to entertain certain expectations as her birthday came around once again.

Chef Mao had been understanding with her request for time off, especially since Xiangling and Guoba had returned from their trip just in time to assist the staff during her absence. Yet, her nephew had been a bit too stubborn to invite her to their clan's gathering this year, likely because she had made the harbor her home. It would be quite awkward if she outright refused again. Reluctantly, she accepted—after imposing a few conditions, to which Chongyun was glad to agree with.

First, they would need to respect the plans she had already made.

On the stone bridge that marked one entrance into the harbor, she found her friend holding a bouquet. The familiar pale petals of Qingxins served as a blank canvas for the beautiful crimson blooms that accompanied it. A small smile gently curved Shenhe's lips as her hands, bound by the thin red rope against her palms, adjusted their grip on the handle of her own gift. "Thank you, Miss Alice."

Now that she understood Alice's penchant for gifts, Shenhe had prepared what was quoted as her "specialty" in exchange. The Dragon Beard Noodles were carefully encased in a box meant to keep warm, the box kept steady on a wooden stand until the delivery made it to its destination. (No one had to know the disaster she wrought while attempting several other recipes). "I've come to realize that I could appreciate my birthday, so long as I can ensure your happiness today, as well."

Though she had much to make up for Alice's overwhelming generosity. Once the gifts were exchanged, she lifted a hand to make sure the pin in her hair was still in place, noting Alice's attention to her different attire. "I was told that I should only wear this on 'special' occasions," she said, with a slight furrow of her brow. They certainly would have told her it was acceptable to wear the outfit on this specific day, yet the date of her birth still held little meaning to her. "I think welcoming a cherished friend back home falls under that criteria."

Chongyun opens his mouth, then shuts it as he hesitates with how to address Shenhe. "A...Auntie, I'm glad to see you at lantern rite. Are you enjoying the festival? Is it too much?"

As trips to the harbor grew more frequent with the passing of days in the year, so too had the next year's lantern rite come to pass. Her trip into the harbor last year had a mission attached to it, a known purpose that she had fulfilled with the aid of others. This year however, her entry into the city had been partly spurred on by a personal desire experience more of the life of mortals. Large crowds still drew some discomfort, but just as she had her own goals in the city, so did the others here.

A familiar face caught her attention amidst the crowd, evidently the same was for him and she turned to face the other as he appeared to mentally grapple with something before speaking.

"...Nephew." She responded decisively, nodding after. "It is good to see you again as well and at Lantern Rite. Please extend my new years greetings to your family as well." Was his face reddening? Were crowds also a source of discomfort for him as well?

"I am. It is... different from the sights of last year, yet familiar as well. I am not the most accustomed to life here, however it has been enjoyable so far. And of yourself? Is there anything that ails you?"

okay, this is me trying to make sense of a family tree and order of events for the exorcist family

so we all know chongyun called shenhe, 小姨, which is a maternal aunt, “mother’s youngest sister”

obviously shenhe didn’t know she had any family left, but that brings the question of how she think her own sister died?

so this is what i think happened:

about 2 years before their mother died, chongyun’s mom married chongyun’s dad

their marriage brought their clans together, hence shenhe’s clan being the branch to a family of exorcists aka chongyun’s dad’s clan

chongyun’s mom was 20, making shenhe 3

that explains how the elders in chongyun’s clan knew about shenhe, she was at the wedding, she was at their house a lot (pretty much everyone loved toddler shenhe lol)

1 year later, shenhe’s mother dies when she is 4

this is when her dad starts going crazy looking to bring her back

chongyun’s mom, who sees this slowly starts visiting less and less, wanting to distance herself from her father

shenhe wonders what happened to her sister that she’s not visiting anymore, shenhe’s father (hurt by the fact that his daughter is no longer visiting, or viewing him as a good father) tells her that she died shenhe’s father moves into a small village taking his youngest daughter with him while notifying no one, and chongyun’s mom looses all contact with her family.

from there a year later (shenhe 5, chongyuns mom 22,) her father does the unspeakable deed, and shenhe is taken in by cloud retainer

3 years later, chongyun is born, shenhe is 8 living with cloud retainer

about 17 more years past, making shenhe 25, chongyun’s mom 42, and chongyun 17

throughout the years, chongyun’s mother would tell stories of shenhe, the elders talk about what happened to the young girl

so he knew shenhe by name, saw one or two baby pictures, but never officially met her

(this could also explain why chongyun didnt immediately recognize her, as a child shenhe’s hair was black/dark blue)

after the events of the crane returns on the wind, shenhe’s character demo happens (ordered like this because in the archon quest, shenhe was still not aware of any living family) officially initiating the meeting between aunt and nephew

let’s just say chongyun gets shenhe to come to see his family, and re-introduce her to them

shenhe sees chongyun’s mom, and after explaining how their father had told her she died, chongyun’s mom just explained she didn’t want to be around his crazy

sisters reconcile, everyone’s happy to see shenhe well

the end

so that’s pretty much my interpretation about what went down

i really hope shenhe gets a story quest reuniting her with her family in game canon lol

there’s a lot of little details and bits of genshin lore that i love but if i had to choose one it would be that hu tao’s birthday is the same as mine :3 KIDDING one of my favorite random genshin facts is how zhongli once invited xinyan, a rock musician well known for her intense and (literally) fiery concerts, to play some music for the wangsheng funeral parlor

(this is from xinyan’s voicelines btw. do you think zhongli likes rock music because he’s the lord of rocks)

and as for the headcanons!! i can come up with sooo many behold an assortment of genshin thoughts (most of which involve hu tao and xinyan because they are very special to me) (im putting them under a readmore because i got carried away sorry)

• one of my favorite sort-of fanon dynamics is zhongli and his adopted kids ganyu (eldest daughter least likely to get in trouble with the millelith) xiao (middle child whos been an angsty teenager for the last 2000 years) and hu tao (baby of the family with the strongest Gremlin Energy)

• xiao hates zhongli’s new boyfriend childe for Many Reasons such as: he’s spent months in liyue and still can’t use chopsticks, every time he sees xiao he ruffles his hair and calls him “little man”, one time he unleashed an evil god and almost destroyed liyue harbor

• zhongli’s other two children are a little less hostile towards childe. ganyu doesn’t fully trust him because of That One Time He Almost Destroyed Liyue Harbor but he makes zhongli really happy so he’s okay for now …and hu tao thinks he’s kind of a dumbass but his job requires him to kill a lot of people so he’s good for business

• hu tao made childe a customer loyalty card (“10% Off Your 10th Cremation Service!”) however despite childe thinking it was funny, zhongli wouldn’t let her make more copies to give out to the general public

• okay so usually in fanart/fanfics the liyue kids friend group is either xingqiu chongyun xiangling and xinyan or xingqiu chongyun xiangling and hu tao. but why not both. xingqiu chongyun xiangling xinyan AND hu tao AND throw in yun jin as well. all of them are buddies peace and love on planet teyvat

• hu tao has a sort of celebrity crush on beidou (i mean who wouldn’t-) and then she meets kazuha and shes like CAPTAIN BEIDOU HAS A KID?

• hu tao: woaaahh its so nice to meet beidou’s new son… i bet beidou wouldn’t just adopt anyone so you must be super cool and badass because um captain beidou is soooo cool and badass and strong and sexy and did you know she beat a sea monster without a vision and her biceps are big enough to l- kazuha: okay how about we talk about something else

• anyway kazuha is an honorary member of the Liyue Kids Friendship Squad

• xinyan and beidou are also like family but xinyan’s parents are still alive (i think) so xinyan thinks of beidou as more of a cool aunt figure. xinyan and kazuha are kind of like siblings to each other tho

• xinyan is like genuinely very kind and good-natured so i think that aside from people who are assholes to her for being loud/a rock musician she can get along with pretty much anyone. also she just. seems like a really good friend so i think all her friends should love n support her and go to as many of her concerts as they can

• one time when xinyan was having a concert in liyue harbor and chongyun got on stage and started drumming and doing backup vocals bc of his yang energy shenhe passed by and saw them and after the concert while xingqiu was tending to chongyun she approached xinyan

• shenhe: i see you’re a friend of my nephew. your music is very unique. it both soothed and aggravated my homicidal urges at the same time xinyan: uhhh well…th. thank you miss shenhe? i’ll take that as a compliment … if you’re ever in the area again you’re always welcome to rock out at my concerts

• i love yun jin and i love yun jin x xinyan i think they would make a very cute couple HOWEVER. i think hu tao x xinyan would be cute as well. theres a lot of potential there but they barely interact in canon and ive only ever seen one person who maybe ships them uwaaaaaa

• in a modern au hu tao and xinyan would both play gacha rhythm games and they would add each other as friends in-game. hu tao and xinyan are on each other’s bandori friendlist

...while acting all aggressively flirty and romantic toward Chongyun, kissing him on the cheek and send him a wink from the now flustered young man much to Shenhe amusement.
