I hate this map.
I think it's pretty clear when i ask for a map of the polities that existed before colonialism, what i am asking for—that is, a map immediately before the scramble for Africa, hell even before European partition of Ottoman North Africa, before all that Spanish and Portuguese port-colonies nonsense.
But this map cames and then laughs at you. It mocks you. It says sneeringly, "But what do you mean before colonization! A lot happened before colonization!" And, without saying it, it jeers that those uncivilized Africans could never possibly create a stable, distinctly bordered and centralized Westphalian state, and that the system WE put on them is obviously better than their own and that WE brought civilization to them and WE organized their nations better. *Look at all those overlaps!* It thought. That can't POSSIBLY stand in a modern Westernized state!
One of the things that the Scramble for Africa, the colonization of Siberia and Central Asia and the general advent of the European nation-state is the complete close-off of facilities of cultural and material exchange. The Eurasian Steppes and its Steppe Route is now divided in three different countries and the Sahara and the Trans-Saharan Trade Routes in 11, very unstable and very poor countries. The ancient Silk Road is in seven different countries and even the Spice Trade, the ancient Maritime Silk Road is guarded by 9+ countries. Every single one of these, countries or states or whatever you call them, has a heavily-guarded frontiers and even a single centimeter of lost land or a single bit of blurriness is unacceptable, unnatural and detrimental to the survival of a people.
That is a reactionary mindset. It's backwards and it's primal, emotional, and very, very fascistic. It's the concept of the Lebensraum, but internationally accepted, the concept of an autocrat's monopoly on violence but in a nice little pretty dress.
It's awful. We need to get rid of it.

Since other people talk about websites I never use on here (AO3 and Twitter, respectively) I want to give you an update on a site you probably never use: NationStates. I just restarted playing it a few weeks ago after many years of absence, and, well, a disc has apparently been rendered nearly entirely usely and the whole site has been down for a week straight with no clue as to when it will be back up. My favorite part is that the stuff that's non-functional is stuff I don't even use; the text editor for messages and the revord of these trading cards that I don't really see the appeal of.
Thank you for coming to my pointless ramble

NationStates
is a cool concept and all (make your own country, figure out how to avoid the zombie plague, hoard uranium, etc.), but eventually you stumble upon the politics threads, which are basically the same twenty people arguing to brick walls about abortion.
On the bright side, one often stumbles upon such absurd discussions as whether ice age bunkers will be collectively owned in the climate apocalypse.

Syrakhanistan: Nation Profile (An Introduction)
<<Taken from a private UN dossier in roughly 20XX.>>
((Read this blog chronologically - this pinned post is first, and then move ahead. Don’t read from the top/most recent unless you want to be confused!))
Syraqhanistan, officially the Glorious People's Imperium of Syraqhanistan and commonly known by the more antiquated terms "Syrakhanistan" or "Greater Arabia", is a... unique nation, to say the least. Nobody, least of all the people living there (especially given the mysterious individual's reported Japanese origin), expected a single figure - "the First" - to rise from an old city with a Kurdish majority in the North and lead an economically far left, culturally progressive but militaristically jingoist movement that spread from the lands once referred to as “Outremer” (a once archaic term that now refers to one of the many autonomous regions in the area, and used by modern sociologists to refer to the region that was once controlled by states such as Lebanon and Jordan to avoid category errors) on the Mediterranean and the Fertile Crescent to the lowlands of the Karachi Autonomous Zone on the Indian Ocean.
An extremely powerful state governs with almost patient leniency, in a notion some have taken to call (in both a farcical and a literal sense) "totalitarian democracy" - where the governing party is elected directly by the people every five years, but those elected have absolute and complete power; and, in every single election in the nation’s history, despite a functioning multiparty system, the majority of votes have gone to the central leading party. This is despite international observers, as well as interviews with both members of the public plus expats outside of the nation, all saying that the elections are free and fair. There is, of course, no official comment nor mandated line from the state's rather opaque government; indeed, interviews only managed to get the phrase "we are a western democracy, just like you!" from one spokesperson - who promptly disappeared from state television.
Direct democracy is crucial to the nation's survival; with a cultural, political and ethnic powder keg, the level of devolution seen - based upon "expertly drawn" borders and precise demography, and called by critics as the insane ramblings of a lunatic - is second to none. In what critics call genocide via forced resettlement, and what supporters call the strengthening of identity through homogeneity, people are randomly tested and moved based on political, cultural, linguistic, ethnic and many other criterion. Understanding this, one notes that the People's Imperium of Syrakhanistan has what some have described as a haphazard patchwork of a party system, although most observers also note that the state has eschewed traditional partisan politics for more personal and direct democratic initiatives.
With such a vast nation, and with such high levels of decentralised governance despite ostensibly existing within a totalitarian quasi-monarchist semi-stratocracy (particularly with regards to the Imperial Marines [See: [REDACTED]]), there do exist some recognisable elements of partisanship; for example, the vast majority of the State's upper echelons remain nominal members of the long de-facto-defunct group of the MSF (the organisation largely responsible for the nation's unification); and a large number of the highest echelons have also been identified as potential [REDACTED]. However, it must be simply stated that partisanship and the traditional party system don't typically apply across the nation, though this probably can't be said the same for some region-level and provincial divisions.
Religion is often debated in the halls of the nation. Whilst there remain large minorities of various world religions here, the State endorses only one religion - misotheism, or the hatred of God. However, in an almost laughably egocentric manner, the State also "permisses" (read: orders) the worship of a single unifying concept known as the Great Blessing, inferred to be by outsiders as essentially a cult of personality around the nation's leadership - although in one of the leader's rare addresses, she rejected such a notion while implying she had contact with, and worshipped, a higher power.
Whilst the central state rules with an iron fist in matters of justice, military and national welfare (among other things), much of the day-to-day business of nation building is left to the devolved governments. Whilst this may lead some to call this less a nation and more a loose alliance controlled by a single all-powerful state, upon closer inspection the nation-state relies heavily upon it's underlings, and the devolved states require constant nurturing by their father figure.
The laws of the land are highly progressive; equal rights based on gender, race and identity mixed with needs required by each of the devolved governments allow for a unique blend of freedom and tradition based upon location. Whilst in theory the state advocates for traditional Marxist autarky (and, indeed, some devolved areas do follow strict autarky, particularly in the mountainous regions), in practice a fairly lenient welfare state exists to support any and all people regardless of situation, to the point of which that both economists within the nation and internationally renowned economists have called it the first nation with a true post-scarcity economy. Housing is free, but allocated based upon need and contribution to society; however, the state is still committed to combatting poverty and homelessness, particularly in urban regions.
There is, of course, an exception to all rules, as is always the case. In what critics call shameful "monarcho-communism", wherein all are equal under the crown, the supreme leader and those close to them enjoy all possible freedoms, wants and needs. This isn't to say that the rest of the population is in dire straits - indeed, polls show that most citizens are content with this status quo.
Despite the harsh landscape, the nation has been keen to develop high technological standards; from large investments into transportation and infrastructure, including a nationwide maglev system as well as extensive air and underground developments, to developing a fruitful space-faring establishment such as the near-complete Space Elevator, technology is becoming a speedy commodity in a once barren locale.
What is more worrisome to those in the UN is the Syraqhanistani military. The governing state tends to lean into a proto-stratocracy, with military decision making being the number one priority of nation building. Whether it be from internal tensions, or from external threats due to the nation's high resource reserves, the nation contains a formidable arsenal of armed forces. Despite assurances of retaliation-only policy, the excursions often seen by their military prove otherwise - indeed, international observers liken the scorched earth policies used by the military in one of their recent campaigns to the surface of the Moon.
Thus, this author must consider this new nation... an inherent paradox. Simultaneously nationalist and communist, helpful to others externally and internally but also prone to extreme violence towards possible threats, signs of progressive policies often unseen in the neo-conservative world view mixed with a terrifyingly totalitarian state with one of history's largest execution rates; a state with almost extreme progressive civil rights, at the cost of virtually all political freedoms, an ambiguous and almost miraculous economy, and a quasi-theocracy centred around the leadership...
It remains to be seen if this place is heaven, or hell, on Earth.
<<End of Report; the reader notes that the end of the page is tarnished by an odd black substance.>>

((Hello. This is the official "roleplay" or "informative" Tumblr account for the nation of Syrakhanistan/Syraqhanistan. It's mostly a spare backup incase NationStates bans my account again, but it also gives me the opportunity to interact with anyone interested in the subjects I look at. The original NationStates profile of the nation can be found at https://www.nationstates.net/nation=syrakhanistan.
Please also read the original fanfiction of MGNQ (Magical Girl Noir Quest), which can be found at http://wiki.magicalgirlnoir.com/index.php/Thread_index
This will be the pinned post. Feel free to like and reblog if you so choose. If you want to interact with me, feel free to send me a message or an ask. If you're not signed in and want to interact, but Dumblr won't let you because they're prudes now, you can send me an anonymous email on [email protected] using various anonymous email sending sites, such as AnonymouseMail.
This should be fun. I look forward to it.))

There's this guy who got permabanned from this online game/web forum I play called NationStates almost 11 years ago and I genuinely feel bad for the guy.
To try and explain what happened with this guy and why I feel bad for him, here's four simple things you need to know about NationStates:
You are allowed to have multiple accounts on this game
One punishment that can be meted out for rulebreaking is DEAT, which means that the nation that you broke the rule with is deleted (it may or may not accompany a temporary ban)
The ultimate punishment is DOS (delete-on-sight), which is a permaban. You try and sneak back on after you've been made DOS? You don't even get a warning, if the mods find out that it's you - your account is deleted. Find somewhere else to play.
The mods generally don't police roleplay or roleplay quality (so long as it's not rulebreaking or deliberately spammy low-quality RP)
The guy I'm talking about (I'm not going to say his nation name[s] because it's crazy easy to actually find some of his online profiles with his real name by searching his NS name) first joined NS in 2004, so several years before I joined (I joined in September 2008, for the record) and became known for the poor quality of his roleplaying. Now, poor quality RPing isn't anything unusual on NS but this guy completely refused to improve or learn and would constantly get into arguments with other players.
This eventually lead to the mods making a very unique decision regarding this player, especially after his original account was DEATed in 2007.
You see, it's pretty common for players who have their nation DEATed to just make a new account and treat it as the same as their previous nation. Which is fair enough, why start over with your lore and stuff that you've been working on.
But with this guy, on account of all the rulebreaking, flaming, and arguments that would happen with his RPs, the mods made the decision: his original nation did not exist. It was a straight up mod-ordered retcon. He could not mention his original nation, RP as his original nation, or do anything with it. It did not, does not, and will not exist in the NationStates multiverse. (This was also done to try and give him a fair shot at starting over as, by this point, he was known as one of the worst RPers on the site - but if you prohibit him from mentioning or doing anything with his infamous original nations, accusations of him being that original account are just speculation and not 'Yeah he's admitted to being him.'
Anyways, after a few more years of his continued poor RPing, trolling, and other rulebreaking (including apparently him once threatening a lawsuit against the site), in early 2012 the mods finally had enough of him and made him DOS and permabanned him from the site.
Now, why would I feel bad for someone like this? I'll tell you why: because this dude is completely and utterly convinced that the reason for his banning wasn't because of his 8 years of poor RPing, rulebreaking, and just being a general nuisance.
No, he thinks that the mods banned him because he's autistic and that they run a cyberbullying clique dedicated both to harassing him into silence whenever he tries to inform people of the 'truth' about NationStates and to banning any and all players with autism and mental disabilities from the site.
If you think I'm joking, I'm genuinely not. I'm obviously not going to link to any of this shit, but I once found his DeviantArt page and he had stuff on it like saying if you buy the book Jennifer Government (the book NationStates is meant to promote) then you're supporting Nazism, terrorism, and cyberbullying, posted a screenshot of a post on the NS forums which he said was 'proof' of the cyberbullying conspiracy against him (it was literally a post by a moderator after he had snuck back on the site and spammed the boards just saying this was a 'former user with mental health issues' or something like that), etc. He's even made online petitions to try and shut down the site for being a den of cyberbullies and he and his family once found the personal Facebook page of one of the NS mods and started harassing them.
Hell, I've interacted with this guy once before. To be clear here: I did not initiate the contact or harass him or anything like that. But he made a post on the unofficial NationStates subreddit a couple years ago (I believe it was October 2021, don't quote me on that) that was basically him talking about how people should stop using the site because it's full of cyberbullies who have been harassing him for years and I just made a simple reply explaining who this guy was, why he was actually banned, and how he's been at this for then-nearly 10 years. The worst I said was 'You're still at this shit?'
Naturally, he just accused me (and another user who also is familiar with him) of being part of the NS cyberbullying clique and asked how many rubles they were paying me in Google Translated Russian.
But really, regardless of everything else, I genuinely do feel bad for him. This guy is in his mid-30s and continues to think that he was banned from NationStates for being autistic and that the NS mods try and harass him in order to silence him. When in reality - almost no one cares about him. Long-time moderators and players around from when he was active will obviously remember him and know of him, but everyone else? He is at best just used as an example when people talk about 'infamous NSers' (and he's far from unique in that regard). That's it.
In a way, perhaps that's best. I can imagine an alternate universe where there actually was a cyberbullying and trolling campaign against him that led to him becoming an 'lolcow', but that didn't happen. And I'd rather someone just imagine that they've been harassed and cyberbullied for years rather than them having actually been harassed and cyberbullied for years (of course, them not imagining this at all would be the best option, but of the two I mean)

There's aproximately 186 Million firearms in circulation in Devonithia. That's more than one firearm for every two people in the country. The only question is:
How do we arm the other 44%?

So, uh
Sorry for not drawing any Destiny fanarts/writing fanfiction for months. I'm recently really tired and I mostly switched to playing NationStates until the next season. I have a few things in my drafts so I'll return
For now you can behold my NationStates leader, Azya Zaavim the babygirl (middle-aged flavoured)
