Chapter Six: “Iceberg! Right Ahead!”

Hello all! I’m afraid that chapters have been slow because six weeks on from me going to work at camp and thinking "ugh my throat and chest feel scratchy", I'm STILL ill. Today has literally been me going to the doctor first thing, going to the pharmacy to get antibiotics, going to a health clinic for a chest x-ray, and then going home to nap before watching television. I am, in short, VERY sick, which is why I had to take a break writing this chapter because all of last week was me battling sinusitis and a chest infection. I'm still not well at all but I wanted to get this down because, hey ho, I love writing it!

As of the end of this chapter, there's about an hour left of the film to cover - plus deleted scenes and my own additions. I'm hoping this fic will be about ten chapters, but we'll have to see how it goes.

A lot of the first two sections of this chapter are lifted heavily from Jonathan Mayo's book "Titanic: Minute by Minute" - it feels very jumpy and chaotic, and it's for a reason. In the film, the time between Fleet calling out the iceberg warning and the actual impact is something like two minutes - in real life, it was barely forty seconds. The Titanic really did not stand a chance sadly. As I saw it once so adequately described online (on Quora I think - I still have the screenshot of it saved to my phone), "the sinking was a 'perfect storm' (in calm seas) of COCK-UPS" - the crew not being trained on evacuation procedures, the missing binoculars for the look-outs, the lack of lifeboats, the fact the iceberg warnings from other ships were ignored etc.

Potential warnings for this chapter include a man hitting a woman, same man also slut-shaming her, swearing (let Newt/Tina/Theseus/Lally swear, goddammit!), people being idiots, passengers panicking because they've been locked on the lower decks, a very sad Thomas Andrews, and my un-beta'd writing.

The soundtrack that corresponds with the scene(s) at the beginning of this chapter (and the last bit of the one before it) is called "Hard to Starboard" and I highly recommend listening to it (or watching the scene if you haven't already seen the film) to get into the mood!

sooo instead of fantastic beasts 2 and 3 (which sucked) i wish we just got a 10-ep series abt newt going across pre-ww2 europe & cataloguing magical creatures 🤷‍♂️

maybe he noticed the creatures he had were oddly distrssed and went off to find the cause? maybe they sensed dark forces, aka. grindelwald's rise to power, the way birds can sense a storm

perhaps the creatures further east were more distrssed than those on the west? he couldve noticed that on his usual travels, or read some vague reports in the daily prophet

but ofc, the wizarding world doesnt rly care much abt magical creatures yet at this point. so the reports are pretty nonchalant and borderline joking

yet, they contain details that are pretty alarming to newt. maybe creatures harming themselves? or others? attacking muggle towns? herbivores suddenly hunting other animals? weird hybrids popping up that shouldn't even exist?

maybe its grindelwald experimenting with the idea of using creatures to gain power but psssst we dont know the reason yet ok

so newt sets off eastwards to figure our tf is going on. starting from britain and ending in ep 10 in romania (as we've learned in hp, romania has DRAGONS 🔥🔥🔥)

every ep has a different magical creature as the focus. some we know from hp (hippogriffs?), some are new. dark creatures (stuff from defense the dark arts classes in hp) also show up so there's action lol

and maybe grindelwald's minions are also on newt's tail? trying to stop him from sniffing around?

ofc jacob tags along because due to wizards not giving a fyck abt magical creatures yet, newt's only guides are local muggle rumors and fairy tales. and newt's a very awkward wizard, while jacob is an incredibly likable and normal man to whom villages readily open up

tina tags along too, because she's an american auror and is trying to figure out whatever dark forces could be gathering (but might be doing that in secret from local authorities cause politics).

theseus is there for the same reason except from the british ministry

we could have a slow burn romance with tina where newt's rly awkward and tina's rly reserved but they clearly care abt each other & over time & experiences, they bond

like newt has no idea how to be in a relationship or show feelings and might even doubt if there's space in his life for another person, considering how long he's been alone and how obsessed he is with his work. he's also kinda always been alone so it's all a strange new situation for him

tina, on the other hand, is incredibly guarded and careful to the point of seeming cold. over time she learns that yes, some people can be trusted.

oh and both learn to actually communicate lol

theseus has actually persuaded the ministry to send him (with some difficulty) because he was worried abt newt and wanted to be around to help. but he doesn't admit this, at first claiming the ministry made him come and that it's even a hassle for him.

he cares abt newt but theseus is a very regular dude who thinks newt's very weird. he loves his brother but struggles to relate to him at all. maybe even infantalizes him a bit? is overbearing?

over time he kinda Gets what newt wants to do and gets a newfound respect for him and learns to accept his weirdness and learns boundaries. and, again, communication lessons for both

i dunno how to shoehorn queenie into this but yeah she could be here too... if i think of a good pretext lol maybe she's just following jacob along

and queenie & jacob are very lovey-dovey but maybe they struggle with the realization that being together might mean being ostractized by their communities

maybe they get rly dramatic and queenie does an Edward Cullen like going "I never loved you" and breaks his heart because she believes he's better off without her

but ofc it horribly backfires and she admits what she did and the whole thing is a mess and they do get back together. but like everyone else, they learn to Communicate

and our merry band of misfits visits both other wizarding schools mentioned in hp (i dont remember their names sorry 😔🤡)

the french school has fairies and half-fairies in it and they have a connection to nature. so they give newt's concerns more attention than anyone else so far. newt's pretty stoked abt that, but there isn't much they can do. maybe the headmaster is too sceptical, despite other staff willing to help newt. maybe grindelwald's dark influence has spread, and the headmaster mistrusts foreigners, muggles, and wizards friendly with muggles as a result

the german school is far less welcoming. maybe they think he's a weirdo too. here grindelwald's influence is even stronger. but perhaps a student or young teacher comes out to help regardless of directive. maybe out of respect for newt's pure guts, wandering dangerous forests and risking everything for his beliefs. after all, their school values being stoic, and this student considers newt to fit this ideal. maybe they help the group find a giant (but i dont think giants are technically magical creatures...?) or an ice monster or something

i've always been fascinated by those other magical school, but we never got a glimpse. so i'd love it if they were very creative and had detailed interiors and exteriors. maybe the french one is an enormous living tree? maybe the german one is entirely underground?

along the way we might also meet other characters, both muggles and wizards, who help or hinder our heroes' journey. maybe we also meets other authors of future hogwarts books, or parents of known characters in hp. neville's parents are an idea, but i dunno if it's possible timeline-wise 🥴

along the way jacob helps a lot using the skills he has (strong social skills, loyalty, a good heart, maybe also knowledge of muggle affairs) and as such is a counterpoint to grindelwald's philosophy of wizard superiority

oh and in ep 1 newt has a near-death experience with a magical creature. rather than blaming the creature, he's understanding and just says the creature was distressed. (other people think he's insane, though.) this does scare him, though - what would happen to his beloved creatures if he was done? what about his body of work? his painstakingly acquired knowledge of magical creatures?

so he starts compiling his notes and writing a book, with doubles as an instruction manual on how to care for magical creatures. but he has no one to pass on his notes to, and it bothers him

maybe he tried to give the notes to dumbledore, but dumbledore smiles and says to give him the book when it's fully done

(dumbledore's lobbying in hogwarts to introduce care of magical creatures as a subject, but wont tell newt yet since its still uncertain)

oh and the eps can start with newt narrating the corresponding parts of his book. the ep's very first shot is always that shaggy, agressive meanace of a book we see in hp. then we see newt's hand carefully patting it, opening it, then reading

over time, he learns to trust his companions, and they begin to understand his work. maybe in like ep 9 he opens up abt his fear of dying and not being able to take care of his menagerie. so they all promise to care abt the creatures using newt's book, should anything happen to him

obv it does, he dies in ep 10 😭 maybe by sacrificing himself while trying to stop grindelwald from enchanting a dragon to do his evil bidding or something

his companions are sad ofc and they do keep caring abt his creatures. we see a montage of all of them doing so, jacob clumsily trying to feed some huge creature, theseus getting bitten, tina sadly stroking the back of some bird-like or horse-like thing

we can have a post-credits scene where, many years later, hagrid's teaching care of magical creatures. maybe fondly talking abt newt and wishing he could've met the man who Understood so deeply why all creatures matter

so yeah thats the kind of fantastic beasts content i crave and think about

and this is how i chose to spend my morning 😃 detailing my imaginary series into the void 😃

Noch vor wenigen Tagen hatte Newt geglaubt, dass er sich nie wieder vor einer sozialen Situation fürchten würde, jetzt, wo er es erfolgreich geschafft hatte, Tina um ihre Hand zu bitten. Damals hatte er nicht darüber nachgedacht, dass er zum Sonntagstee bei seinen Eltern aufkreuzen musste, gerade einmal eine Woche, nachdem er sich das letzte Mal dazu durchgerungen hatte – um ihnen zu eröffnen, dass er tatsächlich und entgegen allen Erwartungen der Verwandtschaft bald ein verheirateter Mann sein würde. Er hegte keinerlei Zweifel daran, dass seine Familie sich freuen würde. Aber er fürchtete die Aufregung und das schiere Ausmaß an Organisation, das seine Mutter für nötig halten würde, und die Einmischung in Fragen, die eine Angelegenheit zwischen Tina und ihm waren. Er hatte von dem ganzen Wirbel bei Theseus‘ Verlobung schon mehr mitbekommen als ihm lieb war.

Since I'm about 40% through with posting my 270 k Fantastic Beasts fic "Aus der Asche", I thought it was a good point to promote it again. :)

It's in German (sorry about that) and I have no idea if I have German-speaking followers on this blog, but if you do understand German, feel free to have a look! :) It's set after CoG and was written before SoD came out, so no spoilers, just my own version of what (should have) happened after Paris.

Newt Appreciation Month, day 15: Favourite Newt AU!

Ah there are a good few AUs that I like, and there are so many good ones out there. I’ve read a good few. There’s one I’m reading at the moment a part of a series, where Newt has managed to save the Sudenese girl, and adopts her. I think the first one is called something new? The author writes some amazing stories, they capture Newt so well and keep him cannon but the stories themselves are not rally cannon at all. I’m still waiting for them to finish the current one I’m reading. Another AU I really enjoyed reading was where Newt ended up teaching at Ilvermorny as the care of magical creatures teacher, while Tina I think was the DADA. It was such a fun read, but I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called. I’ve read lots and lots of AUs where Newt returns to NY to give Tina her copy of his book. That’s because there are a lot of them out there, compared to any other trope. And most of them written a lot better than Newt x reader stuff. And I have yet to find a good Newt x OC fanfic out there. I’m also currently reading a really good AU based on the first FB film, where Newt ends up working with muggle detectives trying to solve the mystery behind the attacks that are happening in Toronto. While trying to recapture his creatures. Tina and Queenie end up being part of the case and helping Newt with finding some creatures, after being taken off the case investigating the Barebone residence and a murder enquiry of sorts. But each of them have a different love interest, so not NewTina or Jacqueenie. In fact Jacob doesn’t really feature in this. It’s called the curious case of Mr Scamander which can be found on FF.net. It’s really fun and interesting read so far. Loving it.

Which was written by my wonderful friend @newt-and-salamander and gifted to me for my birthday, although she had no idea that she was gifting it to me for that reason. Haha! 😂 how can this not be my favourite, it involves two amazing characters, played by two amazing actors. This is a story where Sherlock helps Newt look for his case and the two become good friends, while Jacob and Wattson become friends bonding over Newt and sherlock, while Mycroft and Theseus becomes friends and bond over the idiocy of both their brothers. I mean what else are big brothers going to bond over. :D! I recommend everyone read it, do it now. Come on you know you all want to!!

I have 57 rn and i still can't believe i have that many fics,, it used to be more than that but i had deleted some of my older fics for an old fandom i was once in

2. What's your total ao3 word count?

127,635 words (and counting hopefully once i get out of this slump)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Right now i mainly write for BSD. I used to write for the fantastic beasts and where to find them fandom from 2018 to the first half of 2020 but i stopped cuz i left (you can still find my fics for that fandom in my ao3 and wattpad profiles)

4. Top five fics by kudos

Bored (BSD) - a little domestic fluff fic feat. Ranpo being perpetually bored while Akiko is busy working

Yes, but not always. I like interacting with those who read my fics and seeings their comments just motivates me to write more

i mostly write fluff but i have tried my hand at writing angst although i'm not sure if those fics count as that cuz i feel like i don't have the skill to properly convey the angsty feelings for it to be considered angst

but if i had to choose out of all the attempts i made at angst, i'd say If "Happy Ever After" Did Exist, I Would Still Be Holding You Like This and Con Flores (Te Llevaste Mi Tristeza Con Colores)

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

again, i write fluff so basically all of them have happy endings or are just generally happy overall. i can't really pick one of them dasjkgkas

8. Do you get hate on fic?

i hope not... that's literally one of my writing anxieties, especially when i write a fic involving an oc i have for a fandom (like Edogawa Hotaru, for example)

9. Do you write smut?

i think i tried writing once although it wasn't a fanfic. i cringed hard and never tried writing smut for a fic again. but if you guys saw my character ai chats involving my ships-

i hope not. i always try to make sure all my works are original, but if i do take inspo from another fic i always make sure to ask

yes! i think i had two or three fics translated some time ago by other people online (with my permission ofc) and that honestly makes me feel so proud??

no and i feel too shy to do so😭

never-ending inspiration i guess. i once got a "this is the fic i/we never knew i/we needed" comment on a ranposano fic that i wrote because i had my period and that just made me realize that wow i pull my ideas from literally everywhere

procrastination, my inconsistent english grammar, and constantly setting standards that are a little too high whenever i write something

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?

i'm fine with it ig? englsih is my second language and i don't usually write full dialogues in another language. i usually only include words in another language but never full dialogues

19. First fandom you wrote for?

believe it or not, i used to write fanfics for the rise of the brave tangled frozen dragons fandom, mainly jelsa (but i never published any of them my 10 year old self was too scared)

20. Favorite fic you've written?

omg Lost and Found my beloved ranposano fic daksgdkas that fic is what i like to consider as the peak of my skills as fic writer, like i will never be able to write something like that ever again

unable to stay, unwilling to leave - a newtina titanic au

“It’s been eighty-four years, and I can still smell the fresh paint. The china had never been used, the sheets had never been slept in. Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams. And it was. It really was…”

Hi all! So… I WILL finish my Newtina-TLOU fic, I promise, but… Titanic was back in the cinema in 3D in February because it was just after the 25th Anniversary of its release (fun fact: Titanic came out like three or four weeks before I was born!) and Titanic is literally one of my special interests as an autistic person, both the 1997 film and the history of the 1912 sinking. I have studied so much about it in my spare time that it’s unreal, and I even went to a Titanic exhibition last April (one day after the 110th anniversary of the sinking in fact) in London, so… yeah.

111 years ago today, in the early hours of 15th April 1912, the RMS Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in the early hours of 14th April. I was hoping to publish this chapter yesterday to coincide with the time it struck the iceberg, but life had other plans… still, this is the date it actually sank on, and so it’s still an important date to recognise.

I really wanted to write a fic as a love letter to the film and to the history of the sinking. I’ve talked about a Newtina Titanic AU on Instagram as well as a Theseus/Lally AU and who knows? Maybe I’ll write the TheseLally one at some point, (because that one when I discussed it on Instagram featured Theseus as Rose) but as I was watching the film a third time in the cinema (back in February), I started to pull together a Newtina one.

This fic is based on the 1997 film directed by James Cameron; because I want to respect the real life people who were shown in the film, I have kept most of the real life people in their respective roles instead of substituting them for FB characters. I have not only used the official cut of the film that was released, but I have also used the script and deleted scenes (some of which I believe should have been in the film even though it would have been even longer), and I’ve made some amendments to be as historically accurate as possible.

The title of this fic is taken from the name of a track on the Titanic soundtrack; it’s the song that plays when Rose jumps out of the lifeboat back onto the ship so she can stay with Jack. I highly recommend listening to James Horner’s incredible soundtrack, especially the extended one that features the Party in Third Class track, the songs the band play during the film, and the version of Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On that featured dialogue.

I’m sharing it because obviously I’d love for people to read it, but this is honestly a passion project for me due to my love of Titanic so… you know. I’m happy just to get to dive into the story of my favourite film and have an excuse to do research on the sinking.

For a lot of reasons, I'm not into adoption. Animals deserve to be free in nature and not be altered in any way by human anymore. (you can ask more about it if you wish I don't hate you if you own animals, no worries ;) )

But If I have to save one and keep it with me, I'll choose the demiguise. They're not too chaotic like Nifflers, not too dangerous, not emotionally dependant of their owner (Hello Pickett?) So he can be free and relax in my home and we could chill together sometimes haha

I wrote this scene this morning, I guess I needed a bit of NewTina fluff...

It's supposed to fit in my non magical modern AU (that said, there isn't much to change to make that fit into canon), before Newt and Tina are together.

Newt tried to open a round metallic box, but it suddenly slipped from his hands, as if it had been alive. As in slow motion, the container fell on the ground, all its contents spreaded on the kitchen floor, staining the tiles with tea leaves.

“Bloody hell !” he muttered, before beginning to mumble, as he was looking for a broom. “Can you be bloody careful once Newt ? It’s not that bloody complicated to open a bloody box… I’m tired of you Newt, really… You should be able to make yourself tea without creating a storm in the kitchen…And not be such a failure.” He was almost crying over frustration, over despair at having wasted all his precious tea reserves, and over fatigue. Probably.

A door opened, revealing a feminine shape. Tina’s eyes were barely opened, as if her lids were protesting, manifesting, ordering her to go back to sleep. 

“Newt, ‘re you alright ?”

“Oh… I’m so sorry. Did I wake you up ?”

She softly smiled at him as an answer. “Is everything OK ? ‘re you hurt ?”

“Yes…all good… I just… messed everything up. As usual… But there is nothing to worry about. I’ll just have to buy tea in the morning, I guess. I’m so sorry I woke you up Tina.” He was rubbing the back of his head, looking sheepishly at the dirty floor. 

“Oh… that’s a chance that I actually bought some tea of yours a few days ago.” She opened a cupboard and stretched, her pajamas lifting up, revealing a bit of skin over her stomach. He hurried to look away, his cheeks abruptly burning. 

“I think it’s the right one ?”

A paper bag appeared in front of him. He took many precautions to open the bag and plunged his nose to smell the content. Straight away surrounded by the scent of orange blossom, he whispered. “You remembered… Thank you Tina.” He smiled at her, a golden sparkle in his eyes, and brushed her cheek with his lips. She was the one to blush, now. 

“What if I made that tea for you ? Does that sound great ? So you’ll tell me why you were up in the middle of the night.”

“It’s 5AM, not the…” She gave him a glare, making him stop his sentence. “Right. I couldn’t sleep, I’m up for hours already. I was working.” He kept the rest of his thoughts for himself, trying to avoid to incur her wrath again, even if he was endlessly spiraling. “And you’re right, I should sleep, or rest, or things won’t get pretty soon… As it always turns when I begin to lose my motor skills.” 

As Tina pushed him out of the kitchen space, he returned to his seat at the table, and got back to work… before being interrupted only a few seconds later, by her hand putting a bookmark inside the large volume that was in front of him.

“Certainly not Mister Scamander. We’ll have that tea together. But no work. I think that all of this proves to us that you need to rest. I’ve two free hours before I need to actually get ready for work. Do you want to watch that show we began last week ?” He looked at her, flabbergasted, then nodded imperceptibly. Then, as he began to grab the teapot, she stopped his move. “What about I take care of everything breakable today ? And you get us some pillows and plaids ?”

Newt snuck in his room to bring back the thick blanket made with multicolored squares they both loved. He joined her on the couch where they snuggled against each other, Tina finally using Newt as a pillow as he turned the TV on.
