Ballister and Goldenloin poses. My final assignment on Nimona: Explore Goldenloin’s character. But where to start?? This was a super important question. I didn’t know where to begin. I knew he was heroic, brave and from nobility. But that alone wouldn’t lead me to any interesting poses. I finally decided to ask the question… “Why did Ballister fall in love with Goldenloin to begin with? What was it about him that was so magnetic?” My starting point was to create that moment where two people meet for the first time, and in a magical way, they attract each other. And we’ve all felt that at some point in our lives… that feeling you have when you can’t know enough about the other person… and you want to spend every moment together.✨From this I created a montage of Ballister and Goldenloin spending a day in the kingdom together when they were young…and in that montage Goldenloin’s confidence and charisma really drew out Ballister’s shy personality. And at the end of that day together, they kinda knew they had something special between each other. I pitched this to the directors @itsnickbruno and @troyquane. I was so sure something like this needed to be in the movie. And like so many times in my career, I was proven wrong:) The directors did something way more impressive than a montage. What they did was drop little lines through the movie that signaled to the audience that Ballister and Goldenloin knew each other so well and that they had this past that proved they cared about each other in a way that could only be described as love. BUT… the poses I did from my first idea remained, and that idea informed every single drawing I did for Goldenloin moving forward.

Some people have been saying this, but I don't think it's been said enough and I'm just going to add my voice to the mix.

Nimona's nomination is being framed as an example of "Look at what Disney missed out on!" and I get it. It's a nice, tasty schadenfreude situation and we all like to see The Mouse get taken down a peg.

But I think we need to be very clear; Disney did not miss out on anything because they were never going to take that sort of risk.

Disney was never going to release anything close to the Nimona we got. It would have been sanded down until anything obviously queer or controversial was as faint and unnoticeable as possible by the casual viewer. And then they would still be too scared of any potential backlash. So they would have given the film a limited release at theatres, with no advertising, or social media or support.

Like what happened with Strange World.

You remember Strange World, right?

No?

That's because no one does.

And I believe that was deliberate, because that way Disney can go "Weeellll... obviously we would LOVEto take more risks and have more inclusive stories but that's clearly not what the public wants!"

Look at the original concepts for Wish. The evil royal couple? The peter-panesque star boy that would have made the gen zers go feral the same way millenials went feral for Jack Frost? These could have been the best things about the movie, and even they were scrapped, and replaced with something more homogenised. And those ideas are nowhere near the level of the concepts and discussions Nimona brought to the table.

Disney can barely have explicit gay people. Nimona has a gay south Asian man in a relationship with an east Asian man. As a protagonist! But more than that, you think Disney could ever come up with a relationship as complicated and difficult as Boldheart and Goldenloin's? They would never have the guts to show one love interest cutting off the other's arm in a straight relationship. Let alone a gay one! And then for them to be on opposite sides of the conflict, shifting between feelings of betrayal, and questioning each other motives? That's some adult dark shit for a kids film.

Asha as a character was forced into the quirky girl role that Disney has already flogged to death with Anna and Rapunzel. You ever think they would allow a Disney princess to be as dark and violent and nuanced as Nimona? You ever picture the titial character of a Disney film AS the third act conflict, rampaging through a city in a self destructive rage? Nimona is anti authoritarian, vengeful, bloodthirsty, a pretty explicit trans allegory, and even, by the climax, openly suicidal. You KNOW that terrified Disney.

I had a thing about the Director here too but I was shocked by how long that got so I'll have to save her for a different post.

My point is the things that make Nimona art, that make Nimona a great story, that make the film important and Oscar worthy, are all things that Disney has become too chicken shit to produce. If Disney had released a film called Nimona it wouldn't have been Nimona. I fully believe that if the film hadn't had been 90% finished it wouldn't have been shelved. It would have been lobotomised and vivisected. Everything special and vital about the movie and its message would have been removed, and no one would have known what could have been. Once again we would have gotten scraps and been thankful for them.

It makes me think about films like Wish (and others we don't know the name of, and never will) and think of what they could have been if studio's like Disney were braver and let their artists make art, instead of content.

tl;dr Disney didn't miss out on Nimona because they are incapable of making Nimona. If they had produced it the real Nimona wouldn't exist. We didn't miss out on Nimona. And that's purely by luck.

i've been so focused on IYHM for the past couple months... now that the pub date is so close, i'm full of giddy anticipation and terrible dread. so thank you everyone for the love and well wishes! it's really getting me through it.

5 pieces of animation that knocked my socks off in 2023

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem

My favorite thing about this movie is how different it looks compared to most of the things coming out of mainstream animation right now. A lot of the rules that studios like Disney have laid out about what makes a character design appealing are ignored here, and it is so refreshing. They’re also doing all kinds of cool and interesting things with the rendering style and effects animation. I loved watching this.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

When I was younger I read the comic and enjoyed the movie a lot, but haven’t thought about these characters much since. I was expecting some cool animated fight scenes and a fun cast-reunion from this series, but not much more. We got that, but we also got some really thoughtful, funny, meta writing that showcases the supporting characters in a novel way.

Nimona

I’ve cried all three times I’ve watched this movie. When I’ve talked to the people who worked on it it is so clear that it was an incredible labor of love, both to the people who will be changed by it and to animation itself. It elevates the comic in every way while still being loyal to the source material. And it is a miracle that it was finished and released at all after Disney initially axed it. It feels extremely special.

Blue Eye Samurai

After Primal’s second season last year, I have been hungry for more adult animation that isn’t primetime sitcom. This show scratched that itch in a very satisfying way. It utilizes beautiful 3D animation that mimics traditional Japanese screen prints to great effect. Set in Edo-period Japan, it includes themes on race, gender, imperialism, colonialism, and revenge. Maya Erskine is incredible as the protagonist, Mizu. 

Scavengers Reign

I have been following @charleshuettner on tumblr for ages, so when I saw he had a show coming out I was psyched. I have long been a fan of his design sensibilities and weird animations. Scavengers Reign exists in the overlapping space between sci-fi and horror. One of my favorite things about it is that it kept surprising me: obvious writing decisions that other shows would have made are continually waived in favor of unexpected and compelling character choices. It doesn’t talk down to the audience, and it doesn’t pull its punches. It is also absolutely beautiful.

Honorable mentions/other recommendations: Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse, Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, Star Trek: Lower Decks (season 4), Invincible (season 2)

GOD okay I'm admittedly so so behind on my non-Bat comic reading because trying to read Everything Published In A 15 Year Period is fucking TIME CONSUMING, but! but but but!!! I have some fun ones!! also as always these are not in ANY particular order!

Thirsty Mermaids (Kat Leyh, 2021)

first off: yes we are including graphic novels! that's just a honkin big comic! nobody @ me! anyway, I read Thirsty Mermaids in one sitting on an airplane earlier this year and it was delightful. it follows three mermaid besties who turn themselves into humans and go ashore in search of booze, only to get stuck when the party mage can't remember how to turn them back. what follows is a mix of shenanigans and genuinely heartwarming character development as the trio cope with being landlocked and try to survive capitalism. there's a high potential for a story like this to get cloyingly oversentimental, but Thirsty Mermaids struck the right balance for me the whole way through and never went overboard.

2. My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness (Nagata Kabi, trans. Jocelyne Allen 2016)

MLEWL is one of those books that actually completely lives up to the hype and then some, and it totally knocked me on my ass the first time I read it. I didn't really know what to expect going in, but I was totally blown away by how boldly Nagata's willing to share the ugliest parts of her life through this reflection. it's so much more than romance and yearning (and that isn't even really resolved by the book's end! Nagata continues to struggle with interpersonal relationships in later books, which you should also read!), and it felt really refreshing to see such an honest depiction of how much being depressed and anxious and insecure can just fucking suck. but at the same time, Nagata's ability to turn all of that into art and process what she's experienced in a really levelheaded way as she finds the will to grow and change is really affirming.

I have to give a special note of appreciation to the actual sex scene and how intimacy is negotiated between Nagata and the sex worker she hires, especially the ultimate realization that sex is just an act and losing her virginity didn't really change anything about why she was unhappy in her life. as a sex educator, I really appreciated the honesty and sheer practicality of how it was all framed.

3. Nimona (ND Stevenson, 2015)

hi okay yes basic bitch alert I'M AWARE, but I reread Nimona last year to remind myself of why I didn't want to watch the Netflix adaptation and I was so right for that, because OG Nimona fucks so much harder. it's heartfelt but also chaotic and violent and funny and deeply jaded; I think when I mentioned it in my monthly reading synopsis here I described it as weird art for pissed off queer people by a weird pissed off queer person. and I stand by that! if you haven't read it already or if you haven't in a while, it's right there waiting for you with an open invitation to burn the entire corrupt government to the ground.

I know the word feral is overused and therefore cringe but christ, comic Nimona is feral. come on, man. just let her kill your ex. he's a cop.

4. Superman Smashes the Klan (Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru, 2020)

I had to get one DC comic in here, sue me! it's not Batman-related at all! it's a really rad Superman story that takes place in the 1940s and loosely reimagines an old radio serial, "Clan of the Fiery Cross," the was pretty much a 16-part hit piece on the KKK that was hugely successful in tarnishing their reputation and getting membership to drop. how cool is that? in this version we follow Lee family, Chinese-Americans who have just moved to Metropolis and are met with harassment from the local Klansmen, contrasted with Clark, early in his hero career, still figuring out the full extent of his alien abilities. you get some really nice parallel storytelling between the Lee kids, Tommy and Roberta, exploring what it means to be part of two different cultures at the same time Clark is going through something similar figuring out how to be a representative of two totally different planets, and it all works out in a way that's really sweet. now that I have a friend who's a baby I can't wait until he's old enough to get a copy.

it's an extremely comic book-y comic but in, like, the best way possible.

5. Hawkeye (Matt Fraction and David Aja, 2012-2015)

I can't believe I almost forgot to list tumblr darling Matt Fraction's Hawkeye! what do I even say about this series that hasn't been said already? I love the way Clint Barton is a sadsack piece of shit who's repeatedly ruined his own life, and I love rooting for him anyway because he's just trying so goddamn hard. and also because there's a teenage girl who stole his name and gimmick bullying him the whole time. (Kate Bishop you are everything to me and you will always be famous.) there are costumes and crime fighting but it's first and foremost a slice of life about a life that fucking sucks but keeps on trucking anyway, and that's so up my alley it's not even funny. a lot of the humor probably feels dated now but fuck it, the series is iconic for a reason.

MCU, eat your heart out.

bonus because I wrote out the whole thing and then decided I wanted to include a different one: Paper Girls (Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang, 2015-2019)

I'd be lying if I said that the thing about this series that I love first and foremost wasn't the art, because Chiang's art is breathtaking and I'll read anything ever if he does the art on it. but it's also just a super cool twisty, time-bending story about four girls getting roped into some high sci-fi bullshit when they're just trying to finish up their paper routes the morning after Halloween and having everything go to hell around them. I really respect a series that is committed to being weird and doesn't really care if you don't understand what's going on for a decent chunk of the plot, especially because it all comes together in a way that's pretty satisfying. waiting to read the whole series in one big run once it was all published so that I could track all the little hints and clues and things coming together across time travel bullshit was mwah, delicious.

also more than anything it's a story about how you Do Not fuck with 12 year old girls, especially in packs, because they're metal as hell, and I'm really about that.

Ballister plus henna (and a suit and tie)

Why? I got henna a couple months ago and was thinking of going back to the same Middle Eastern to have it redone. In the meantime, I was doodling the design I got last time. I drew the hand with the suit and tie because I wanted it to be doing something, and I made Ballister the guy wearing the suit because, even though he’s modeled after his British-Pakistani voice actor, I’ve never seen a character who looked so much like my Iranian father in my life (I think we do have a tiny bit of Pakistani in us, but it’d be such a distant relation that we don’t have any claim or attachment). Granted, it’s mostly a passing resemblance, but they have the same skin color, hair style, even Ballister’s mustache lowkey reminds me of the one my dad used to have when he was younger. It’s was nice, finally seeing a character that looks like your family after two and a half decades of passively knowing not to even expect it. Plus, henna is practiced in both cultures, so felt like a fun way to celebrate my background and the character’s background at the same time

Anyway, that’s the Doylist reason. What’s the Wastonian reason Bal has henna and a nice outfit here? Idk pick a reason — I basically copied the henna design I got last time and it’s way too simple for a special occasion like a wedding. Maybe once he broke free from the Institute’s hold and cleared his name, Bal wanted to reconnect with his culture? Maybe after a thousand years behind a wall and we’ll into a sci-fantasy future, henna practice has evolved to being less elaborate? Maybe it was an impulse move while out on the town with Nimona and Ambrosius?

NIMONA SPOILERS!!!!!!!!

I feel like my feelings about the Nimona movie are similar to my feelings about Howl’s Moving Castle. I’m a huge fan of the Howl’s Moving Castle book, and I can’t help but be bitter at the movie for taking away so many elements that made the story special. BUT if I view it as an entirely different property I can really appreciate the movie and I genuinely love it. But sometimes its hard and I dream of what it would have been like to have the book adapted faithfully. Same goes for Nimona. The comic means so much to me and I was so disappointed and upset to see so SO many elements I liked just completely cut. The characterization for ballister and ambrosius (just like for howl and sophie) is so different its almost entirely new characters. But if I view the movie like a different non related franchise I can see how amazing it is and how it has an amazing story and message to tell and is so good for young queer people. It will just never be MY nimona, you know? And i really wish I could have seen what the film could be if they were more faithful to the original. The movie’s good and PLEASE watch it, but yeah those are my thoughts.

Oh hey, another Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance trailer. Knew I should’ve staggered talking about the Full Armour stuff.

Anyway, given that I’m fresh out of RX-78’s to talk about (at least until we get some more information on the RX-78 Gundam Ex), I’ll have to do something drastic - actually discussing the trailer itself.

Gotta say, it is nice that we can finally get a good look at the mobile suits themselves now that they’ve got models. Regular, non-special Zaku II’s look nice, I’ll be interested in seeing how the proportions stack up. Also, those Gouf Custom’s near the end? Gorgeous. Really hope we get a HG of those (though I’m personally hoping for some unique accessories). I really, really hope we see Doms in this since they’re going to look absolutely beautiful.

I briefly misread the “11 months into the war” bit at the start as just 1 month into the war, and I had to go back and double-check. If it’s 11 months in then that basically allows for all kinds of great tech in place, and it also means that Zeon’s fortunes are going to change very quickly. Depending on precisely when it’s set, it’s either just before or after the Battle of Odessa, which is usually said to be the big turnaround of the entire war, and the beginning of the end for Zeon on Earth.

Character designs look good, I keep seeing the main character (I think it’s Illiya or Elise or something) as Nimona though, but that’s probably just me. It’s really interesting how much like a game it looks, it reminds me a lot of Gundam Igloo, but time will tell if it’s got that series’ charm.

“It’s the Red Wolves! They took out three fleets at Loum!” - The Battle of Loum is one of those things in Gundam where absolutely none of the information we are given about it matches up, so maybe take this with a grain of salt. I should note that Loum is the fight which made Char famous, as he was able to take out five ships single-handedly. The Black Tri-Stars also achieved great fame with their capture of General Revil. There are numerous other noted Zeon aces who made their name at Loum (or during the Earth drop operation), so there’s no harm in the Red Wolves being another. However, three fleets feels a bit implausible.

EDIT: Apparently this is a translation flub, and the intended line was “they took out three ships at Loum”, which makes sense.

(It’s likely emblematic how early UC was typically rather “realistic” with its numbers - a tally of three ships would be very respectable for any ace, and the title of ace itself was awarded after five kills - it sounds low, but speaks to how deadly these fights really were. But as time passes, it’s not unusual to see these numbers exaggerated in fiction. The absolute top aces of the One Year War have just under 200 kills, which would be on par with real-life fighter aces from the Second World War, which gundam’s aces draw heavily from).

Lastly, based on the general tone of the trailer, I’ll assume it’ll be shooting for a grittier take on the one year war a lá Gundam Thunderbolt, so it’ll be interesting to see how that all goes.

Witch from Mercury took 1 and a half seasons to give me married wives that went through a difficult yet fulfiling journey.

Nimona. A movie that was cancelled and almost wasn't made due to production issues (keep that in mind cause we'll come back to that) managed to give people a great gender non conforming protagonist as well as a gay couple and a heartbreaking angsty young sapphic backstory.

But this show is five fucking seasons in

And still nothing but heavy teasing.😮‍💨

I'm not an idiot. I know they're a couple. You can tell by how close they are but this show should have a solid confirmation already cause or not it's just going to keep looking like queerbait. Especially when the only characters they explicitly do confirm as queer in the show is Ms Bustier and her out of NOWHERE wife and Zoe, a character they sideline in her own focus episodes!

And yeah I'm aware Astruc, sort of confirmed Juleka and Rose as a couple on twitter but that's still pretty shit. I mean people didn't let Korrasami only being confirmed on twitter slide, so why tf should we let this pass? And the thing with legend of korra is that it was one of the first to ever do it. To try and get Queer couples in animated shows so it makes sense why they would have that level of restriction on them when it came to korrasami and even then in the end they managed to explicitly show Korra and Asami as a couple in a graphic novel at the very least!

These motherfuckers milk miraculous to hell and back with dolls, amusement park rides, movies, specials, comics and some other bullshit but they can't make any piece of media at all to explicitly show Juleka and Rose and Marc and Nathaniel being a couple and not have to tease them anymore? Really?

Oh but they made a whole episode for Mylene and Iván when they first got together and halfassed a whole romance between Felix and Kagami.

I love Mylene and Ivan btw Im just pointing out the clear double standard here with the motherfuckers behind this show.

And then Astruc says it's cause production and censorship issues (his favorite excuse btw) that they can't show explicit confirmed LGBTQ+ Rep.

And I'm like

Huh.. Funny. You sure like to tackle other pretty controversial topics like abuse and racism in the show (very fucking poorly may I add! )

But you draw the line at gay? Oooo the gays. Company not gonna like that so let's hide it. Oh but let's go ahead and have Marinette be blatantly racist to POC in a comic, show Marinette nude in said comic, show distressed children being sent to go live with their neglectful abusive parents and redeem terrorist villains in death. 💀

This show surprises me in all the wrong ways every time.

Kaiju Week in Review (June 25-July 8, 2023)

I picked a bad time to skip a week lol

Ultraman Blazar, the 35th entry in the Ultra Series, has made the scene. Episode 1 throws us right into a battle between humanity and a space monster. Blazar's the pushy type, all but forcing Gento to transform, but he doesn't speak Japanese—just yowls. For now, that makes him the show's central mystery. The show's defense team, SKaRD, won't actually form until the next episode, at which point we should have a better sense of it. But I'm intrigued so far.

Free streaming TV service Pluto TV has added a Godzilla channel. It boasts, or should soon boast, all of the Japanese Godzilla films minus King Kong vs. Godzilla and Shin Godzilla, plus Rodan, all the Mothra movies, The War of the Gargantuas, Godzilla (1998), and Godzilla: The Series. A Blu-ray.com user has composed a detailed rundown of the versions of the films used—short version, nothing we haven't seen before apart from a few small changes.

I got to see Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken before its official June 30 release date thanks to Regal's Monday Mystery Movie series. I guess I didn't retain much memory of the trailer, because it surprised me how early in the film the title character first grew into a kaiju. I can't give it an especially enthusiastic recommendation—comparisons to Luca and Turning Red are inevitable and don't flatter Ruby at all. But I get a kick out of seeing kaiju in such alien territory as a hyperactive animated kids' movie, and they continue to show off their flexibility as metaphors (Ruby is plainly neurodivergent). 7 outta 10.

Nimona dropped on Netflix the same day, and that's one anyone reading this column should sprint to watch. It saves its kaiju for the third act, and I've held off on posting much about that part of the story yet, but trust me, Ishiro Honda would be proud.

After years of lackluster Gorgo home video releases, Vinegar Syndrome seems poised to finally do it right in 4K Ultra HD. (If you're like me and don't have a way to watch such discs yet, don't worry, it comes with a Blu-ray.) New scan, new audio commentary, special features both new and old, and a killer cover. For those unfamiliar with the company, note that this release is "only available on [the Vinegar Syndrome] website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them."

Every episode of Chibi Godzilla Raids Again is now subtitled, a fine excuse to get acquainted with one of the Reiwa era's biggest surprises. No stakes, no budget, just a bunch of Toho's biggest stars acting like a bunch of fools.

There's always more Godzilla toy news than this column can hope to cover, but a few highlights:

Bandai's ever-expanding Movie Monster Series will release Gamera 1965, Gyaos 1967, and Battra larva later this month. The defunct Daiei Kaiju Series last offered a Showa Gamera in 2006, and never covered any of his foes from that era; here's hoping Gyaos is the first of many.

Hiya Toys now has the license to produce figures from the Toho Godzilla films, not just the Monsterverse.

Super7 will be selling ReAction figures of Godzilla chomping some helpless people on a subway train at San Diego Comic Con. They just get it (and hopefully the many of us who aren't going will have some way of getting it that doesn't involve scalpers).

The new unit in Godzilla Battle Line is Monster X/Keizer Ghidorah. The former evolves into the latter after his first death. Keizer is a heavy hitter with a twist: he regains 20% of his health with every defeated foe. Great against swarms, but you don't see too many of those these days.

Believe it or not (many are still in denial), but Pacific Rim turns 10 on Wednesday. Thankfully, per this Tweet from director Guillermo del Toro, the effective start of the Kaiju Renaissance (and one of my all-time favorite films) won't go unrecognized on its first big anniversary. I'm guessing a cast reunion?

More translations from Noah Oskow await on Toho Kingdom, these a collection of synopses of early versions of Godzilla vs. Mothra, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, and Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla from the Toho DVDs. Much of this has been translated in greater detail already, but the later drafts are interesting.
