James Gunn: The first series that we’re doing, and I’ve already written the entire series, is Creature Commandos. This is an animated TV series and this is art from the animation company that’s doing it. Creature Commandos is based on the great team from DC.
What we’re doing with the DCU is we’re having animation tied directly into live action. Television, movies and games all intertwine within the same universe. We’re going to cast actors that are going to be able to play the characters in this, as well as in other things, some of which we’ve already cast. I’ve written all seven episodes of this show and it’s in production now.
In the image (going from left to right), that's Rick Flag, Sr. He's going to show up in other stuff. Then Nina Mazursky. Doctor Phosphorus, a Batman villain. Frankenstein—Eric Frankenstein, specifically. The Bride of Frankenstein, who's the lead. Finally, G.I. Robot and Weasel.

James Gunn Reveals Next Slate of DC Films and TV Projects
Tumblr media
James Gunn released a video today revealing his and Peter Safran’s plans for the DC Universe going forward. One of the main plans is to connect the DCU across film, TV, gaming, and animation to make the characters consistent across the different platforms. Things that are outside of the mainstream continuity, like Matt Reeve’s Batman or Teen Titans Go, will be clearly labeled as DC Elseworlds. Gunn and Safran, along with other writers are mapping out an 8-10 year plan, with Chapter 1 being “Gods and Monsters.”
As for how often new content will release, the team Safran mentions “probably two movies and two HBO Max series per year.”
With the four projects coming out over the next year, Gunn states that Shazam! Fury of the Gods "connects very well.” Then The Flash will reset the DC Universe. The Blue Beetle will be next, followed by Aquaman 2, which will lead into the next few projects.
New projects in the “Gods and Monsters” chapter include the following:
Tumblr media
Creature Commandos, an HBO Max animated series written by Gunn. The team consists of Rick Flag, Sr., Nina Mazursky, Batman villain Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, The leader The Bride of Frankenstein, G.I. Robot, and Weasel.
Tumblr media
Waller, live action HBO Max series, will follow Amanda Waller, once again placed by Viola Davis. The series will take place between the first and second seasons of Peacemaker and is created by Christal Henry and Jeremy Carver.
Tumblr media
Superman: Legacy is a live action movie and what Gunn calls “the true beginning of the DCU.” Gunn is writing the screenplay, which will reportedly not be an origin story.  “It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.” (DC Comics)
Superman: Legacy is scheduled to release on July 11, 2025.
Tumblr media
Lanterns, a live-action HBO Max series follows Hal Jordan and John Stewart. They will discover a big mystery that will tie into the larger DCU.
Tumblr media
The Authority is a live action movie featuring the WildStorm characters, who will now be part of the DCU.
Tumblr media
Paradise Lost is a live action HBO Max series is an origin story for Paradise Island / Themyscira and takes place before Diana.
Tumblr media
The Brave and the Bold is a live action Batman movie follows Bruce and Damian Wayne and is based on Grant Morrison’s comic book run. Other members of the Bat-Family will also appear.
Tumblr media
Booster Gold is a live action HBO Max series following the titular superhero with imposter syndrome.
Tumblr media
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a live-action movie based on the Tom King and Bilquis Everly comic. Kara was raised on a chunk of Krypton for the first fourteen years of her life.
Tumblr media
Swamp Thing, a live-action movie will be an origin story for the character.

DCU Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters
After a private press event on Monday, January 30, 2023, Co-Chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios James Gunn and Peter Safran announced to the public on January 31st the first batch of projects planned for DC Universe’s first chapter, titled “Gods and Monsters”.
Collider shares Gunn and Safran’s plan maps out 2 chapters in this universe, which will take 8 to 10 years to be told, leaving space for other stories in the future.
5 films and 5 HBO Max series (one of them animated) were disclosed:

Tumblr media
7 episodes written by Gunn. Amanda Waller creates a black-ops team out of monstrous prisoners.
L-R: Rick Flag Sr. (who is going to appear in other projects too), Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus (Batman villain), Eric Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein (the lead), G.I. Robot and Weasel.
WALLER Series
Tumblr media

SUPERMAN: LEGACY Film

Superman’s actor has not been cast yet.
LANTERNS Series
Tumblr media
Starring Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart. A True Detective-type mystery on Earth investigated by the duo, who find an ancient horror that leads into the overall story arc of the DCU.
THE AUTHORITY Film
Tumblr media
DC’s WildStorm team who think the ends justify the means. Gunn explains “They are basically good-intentioned, but they think that the world is completely broken and the only way to fix it is to take things into their own hands, whether that means killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments—basically, whatever they want to do to make the world better. We’ll see how that journey goes for them. There are morally gray characters (in our DCU), of which these are.”
PARADISE LOST Series
Tumblr media
Set in Themyscira or Paraside Island, home of the Amazons and birthplace of Wonder Woman. The series focuses on the genesis and political intrigue of this society of women. Takes place before Diana is born.

BOOSTER GOLD Series
Tumblr media
As put by Safran: “A loser from the future who uses his basic future technology to come back to today to pretend to be a superhero”.
SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW Film
Tumblr media
A science fiction adventure based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic.
Gunn explains that while Superman was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, Kara was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet, and lived there for the first fourteen years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. “She’s a much harsher and more f*cked up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far.”
SWAMP THING Film
Tumblr media
The film will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing.
*****
Other projects from Chapter 1 remain under wraps for now!

Sean Gunn também dará voz a G.I. Robot.

The Longevity of George Segal by Susan King
Newer generations of audiences primarily know George Segal as a sitcom actor who played the publisher of a fashion magazine on the NBC comedy series Just Shoot Me!, and for the past six seasons, the amiable grandfather always eager to give advice on ABC’s The Goldbergs. But to baby boomers, he was one of top leading men of the 1970s. He may not have reached the heights of Burt Reynolds, Paul Newman, Robert Redford or Al Pacino during the decade, but nobody could do romantic comedy better than Segal. He was charming, adorable, sexy and a bit world-weary. Sort of a neurotic New York Jewish Cary Grant with a fabulous head of thick air.
Segal starred in such comedies as 1970’s WHERE’S POPPA? (the funniest scene is when Ruth Gordon pulls down his pants and bites him on the tuchus) and THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT, THE HOT ROCK (‘72), BLUME IN LOVE (‘73) and A TOUCH OF CLASS (‘73), for which he won the Golden Globe for Best Actor and his costar, Glenda Jackson, took home the Best Actress Oscar.
Segal, now 85, told me during an interview I did with him in 2011 for the Los Angeles Times at the famed eatery Musso & Franks that he had “no notion I was going to take a comedy direction.” In fact, one of his first major stage roles was in 1956 in Jose Quintero’s legendary off-Broadway production of Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh, starring Jason Robards in his signature role of Hickey.
Tumblr media
And when he began in features in the early 1960s, Segal starred in such dramatic fare as 1965’s SHIP OF FOOL; Mike Nichols’ superb WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? (‘66), for which Segal earned an Oscar nomination for supporting actor; the 1966 thriller THE QUILLER MEMORANDUM and that same year, CBS’ broadcast of Arthur Miller’s DEATH OF A SALESMAN.
Segal was also a popular guest on daytime and evening talk shows where he got to demonstrate his goofy charming side. He’d always bring out his banjo and sing the 1909 song “The Yama Yama Man.” Housewives and mothers—mine included—fell in love with him.
And so did director Jack Smight, who, Segal noted, thought he would be perfect for his 1968 dark comedy NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY. Segal was pitch perfect as Morris Brummel, a tough-nosed New York detective out to kill a flamboyant serial killer (Rod Steiger) with major mother issue.
Hollywood realized they had a romantic leading man on their hands.
Tumblr media
The depth and breadth of Segal’s talent—both comedic and dramatic—can be seen in Bryan Forbes’ searing 1965 World War II drama, KING RAT. Segal plays one of the 10,000 American, Australian and British prisoners at a Japanese POW II. But Segal’s Captain King is a ruthless hustler who runs the black-market operation in the camp. Segal’s skill is also present in Robert Altman’s underrated CALIFORIA SPLIT (‘74), a comedy with dramatic overtones with Segal and Elliott Gould as gamblers who bond over the gambling tables.
Segal is in full flower as a romantic leading man in Paul Mazursky’s comedy BLUME IN LOVE. He plays a divorce attorney who falls in love with the beautiful Nina (Susan Anspach), marries her, cheats on her then tries to win her back after they divorce. The film also stars Marsha Mason in her film debut and a delightful Kris Kristofferson.
At the time of my interview, Segal and the late Mazursky were still the best of friends and met for breakfast several times a month. “I just saw him this morning,” he noted. “I meet these geezers at the Farmer’s Market. We usually talk about showbusiness, the old days and what’s happening now.”
Segal didn’t turn his back on dramas in the 1970s, as witnessed with Irvin Kershner’s superb 1970 dramedy LOVING, in which he plays a commercial artist living in the suburbs with his wife (Eva Marie Saint) and their kids while not dealing very well with a mid-life crisis.
Tumblr media
Segal also starred in Sidney Lumet’s 1968 dramedy BYE BYE BRAVERMAN, a box-office flop the filmmaker didn’t like: “It should have been a soufflé, but it turned out a pancake.” The film about four Jewish intellectuals—Segal, Jack Warden, Sorrell Booke and Joseph Wiseman—that travel to a friend’s funeral in a cramped Volkswagen Beetle, may not have excited the critics either, but it’s a wonderful opportunity to catch an early comedic turn by Segal as a public relations writer. Time singled out Segal: “As the story’s central character, actor Segal shows flashes of a comic talent hitherto unexplored by Hollywood.”
By the end of the 1970s and early 80s, Segal’s career slowed because his films weren’t burning up the box office. “Most of us get about 10 years at best [at the top],” Segal confessed. “As you get into playing father roles, the parts dry up because, I don’t mean to say it’s a sex thing, but you have that testosterone vitality. But there are certain actors, like Jack Nicholson, who crested and just kept going. I am in another group, whatever that group is, but I have been tremendously lucky. You just have to keep bellying up to the table.”

365 Day Movie Challenge (2019) - #150: Miami Rhapsody (1995) - dir. David Frankel
Years before achieving significant mainstream success with the big-budget films The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and Marley & Me (2008), writer/director David Frankel got his start in feature films with the screwball comedy Miami Rhapsody, an entertaining but obvious attempt to mimic the patter that Woody Allen popularized in the 1970s. Frankel even went so far as to cast Mia Farrow in one of the film’s main roles, although the real talking point here is that the main character is a woman, embodied by Sarah Jessica Parker in a refreshing change from the stereotype of the neurotic, hyper-detail-oriented male protagonist.
Parker plays Gwyn Marcus, an aspiring screenwriter whose relatively happy existence is rocked by the news that her mother Nina (Farrow) has been having an affair with her grandmother’s nursing home caretaker, a Cuban immigrant named Antonio (Antonio Banderas). Even more shockingly, Gwyn’s usually taciturn father Vic (Paul Mazursky) has also had a fling in the recent past, dallying briefly with Zelda (Kelly Bishop), the secretary who had nursed on a crush on him for a long time and pounced on him at the first chance she got. These revelations of double midlife crises send Gwyn reeling, causing her to question her engagement to her pleasant but somewhat boring fiancé, zoologist Matt (Gil Bellows). Making things even more complicated, Gwyn’s siblings inherit their parents’ problems and deviate from their respective spouses too; Jordan (Kevin Pollak) cheats on his pregnant wife Terri (Barbara Garrick) with her best friend, supermodel Kaia (Naomi Campbell), while newly married Leslie (Carla Gugino) falls hard for her ex-boyfriend from high school, Mitchell (Jeremy Piven), when they reconnect in a lingerie boutique.
To its credit, Miami Rhapsody throws a few narrative curveballs at the audience, shaking up some expectations for how romantic comedies often wrap up in the third act. SJP does most of the heavy lifting, which she accomplishes admirably given the film’s consistently hectic pace. Most of the other performances are likeable yet undemanding for the actors, although Paul Mazursky fared well in a role that required subtlety in some serious, introspective scenes. David Frankel’s film may be Hannah and Her Sisters for the South Florida set, but it’s definitely a fun bit of fluff.
