If I saw Nie MingJue ride in on horseback to the Phoenix Mountain Night Hunt with all the heat of a solar flare, I would throw flowers to him
RIP to all the other girls but I'm different

Could you do a nmj perspective of Upon the Qinghe Mountains🥺👉👈
i've been thinking about doing this since i first wrote "Upon the Qinghe Mountains," so thank you for the excuse!
for those who haven't read the original fic, i do recommend reading it first. you can find it here. the gist of it is that i wrote a platonic NHS & NMJ Hanahaki AU!
When Nie Mingjue looked back on the previous weeks, he couldn’t say what exactly prompted him to insist on Huaisang joining him for Xichen's Cleansing. The bags, growing and growing under Huaisang’s eyes? The way his brother’s cough had worsened?
Maybe, a vicious voice would whisper, he had noticed how Huaisang avoided him, and the disciples watched with worry, and some part of him had known all along that he was killing his brother.
But when that happened, all Nie Mingjue had to do was look at Huaisang to remember his own reaction the day it all happened, and he knew in his heart that he’d had no idea. And wasn’t that almost worse than knowing?
<line break>
Nie Mingjue was trying not to doze off listening to Cleansing for the fifth time in a row when he heard it: A cough. He looked to Huaisang, a reprimand already on his lips, but at the sight of his brother, he jolted to his feet and Xichen stopped playing.
“Huaisang?” Nie Mingjue questioned, going to where his brother was bent over, hand at his throat and coughing. “Huaisang, what’s wrong?”
Huaisang ignored him—and then, with a sickening lurch, Huaisang threw up. Nie Mingjue dodged to the side, both to avoid the sick and to help pull his brother’s hair out of the way, but what came up wasn’t what he expected.
“Are those… flowers?” he asked, stunned, as he looked at the green and yellow flowers. He wasn’t sure what kind they were—Huaisang would know—but they were whole and surrounded by vines and blood, and though Nie Mingjue had never seen it before, he knew instantly what he was looking at.
Of course both of them would be attacked by their cores. Of course.
Bowing his head, Nie Mingjue allowed himself a single moment of grief—and then he leapt to catch Huaisang as he passed out.
“Xichen!” he barked.
“Here,” Xichen said, already at his side, using his sleeve to wipe the blood and sick from Huaisang’s lips. “He needs a doctor.”
“Here, Zongzhu,” a voice said, and Nie Mingjue caught the eye of the sect doctor as he came around. He had his kit and everything already out and prepped, and Nie Mingjue’s stomach clenched. The doctor had come prepared. How? Nie Mingjue hadn’t sent for him, and neither had Xichen—
The door closed, and he looked up to see a Nie disciple slipping back into place to guard the room.
Either he had incredible instincts, or the entire sect had been aware of Huaisang’s illness and had neglected to tell him. There was only one reason he could think of that would prompt that: They were protecting one of their own.
Nie Mingjue’s heart worked double-time as he fought to control his qi. The last thing Huaisang needed was the doctor split between the two of them if he had a qi deviation right then and there.
“Xichen,” he growled. “Take A-Sang to his room and watch over him. I’m going to hunt out who rejected him.”
“A-Jue—“
But Nie Mingjue was already gone.
<line break>
Hours passed as he interrogated disciple after disciple, trying to figure out who could have possibly hurt his brother like this. Without fail, though, each and every one refused to give him a name. They acknowledged they knew about Huaisang’s Hanaki, that the loved one was indeed someone within the sect, but beyond that—nothing.
Nie Mingjue hadn’t been so furious since Wen Ruohan had still been alive.
But with all options exhausted beyond torturing his own disciples, he had nothing left to do but wait until Huaisang woke up—and wake up he would. Nie Mingjue’s didi was nothing if not stubborn.
Storming to Huaisang’s room, though, proved that there was another option. A horrible, terrible option.
“Da-ge? Er-ge, he—,” Huaisang was saying. “Er-ge, Da-ge’s the reason I have Hanahaki.”
Huaisang might as well have resurrected Wen Ruohan himself, Nie Mingjue felt so stunned. He—he was the one? Huaisang thought—
He covered his mouth, and found his face wet. He was crying? Of course he was crying. He—Huaisang—A-Sang—his didi—
Had Nie Mingjue been so cruel? He must have. Even as he thought, he couldn’t remember the last time he and Huaisang had spent time together, besides listening to Xichen play. Loneliness could be as deadly a weapon as any, and Nie Mingjue wasn’t shy to raise his voice, either.
But Nie Mingjue was there now, though. And he would never leave again.
Wiping away his tears, he tuned back in to the conversation in time to hear Xichen say, “I’m going to have a servant fetch him, and you two are going to have a long talk. I won’t let either of you out until you do.”
“That won’t be necessary, Xichen,” Nie Mingjue said, stepping into the room. A talk was past-due. Nie Mingjue wouldn’t allow himself to leave until it wasn’t.
By the end of their talk, Nie Mingjue and Huaisang were both in tears—but they were also hugging for the first time in weeks, so Nie Mingjue would call it a win.

MDZS meets MBTI
The Myers-Briggs Personality type is older than the Enneagram, and consists of sixteen types based on four different pairs of personality traits: Introversion vs. Extroversion; Sensing vs. Intuition, Feeling vs. Thinking, and Perceiving vs. Judging. To be clear, none of these categories are black and white–for example, all Feelers are capable of using logic, and Thinkers have feelings and care about people–but it’s a cool way of understanding personalities.
I’m not going to do every character, but simply the characters I think are most important and the ones for whom I have the most information to analyze (some is def guesswork). :P Also, this is just my opinion and definitely open to debate! MBTI isn’t a science; it’s just something I do for fun.
Wei WuXian-->ENFP “The Campaigner”
Tumblr media
Unlike many of the others, Wei WuXian’s type seems very, very obvious. He might be the most ENFP to ever ENFP.
The ENFP personality is a true free spirit. They are often the life of the party, but unlike Explorers, they are less interested in the sheer excitement and pleasure of the moment than they are in enjoying the social and emotional connections they make with others. Charming, independent, energetic and compassionate... if they’ve found a cause that sparks their imagination, ENFPs will bring an energy that oftentimes thrusts them into the spotlight, held up by their peers as a leader and a guru – but this isn’t always where independence-loving ENFPs want to be.
Lan WangJi-->ISTJ “The Logistician”
Tumblr media
Why yes, Lan WangJi is the exact opposite of his beloved Wei WuXian. He’s another one that seems pretty obvious to me.
ISTJ personalities are no-nonsense... ISTJs have little tolerance for indecisiveness, but lose patience even more quickly if their chosen course is challenged with impractical theories, especially if they ignore key details...
ISTJ personalities adhere to established rules and guidelines regardless of cost, reporting their own mistakes and telling the truth even when the consequences for doing so could be disastrous. To ISTJs, honesty is far more important than emotional considerations, and their blunt approach leaves others with the false impression that ISTJs are cold, or even robotic. People with this type may struggle to express emotion or affection outwardly, but the suggestion that they don’t feel, or worse have no personality at all, is deeply hurtful.
Jiang Cheng-->ISTJ “The Logistician”
Tumblr media
Yes, the same type as Lan WangJi, just a tad more bitter. Personality tests, even if two people seem to fit a type extremely well, can’t define someone, because people are just so infinitely more complex. The part about being taken advantage of reminds me here of how Jin GuangYao points out that people took advantage of Jiang Cheng’s need to prove himself to drive a wedge between him and Wei WuXian.
ISTJs’ dedication is an excellent quality, allowing them to accomplish much, but it is also a core weakness that less scrupulous individuals take advantage of. ISTJs seek stability and security, considering it their duty to maintain a smooth operation, and they may find that their coworkers and significant others shift their responsibilities onto them, knowing that they will always take up the slack. ISTJs tend to keep their opinions to themselves and let the facts do the talking, but it can be a long time before observable evidence tells the whole story.
Lan XiChen-->ENFJ “The Protagonist”
Tumblr media
Sadly, this description is pretty accurate to Lan XiChen’s strengths and also his flaws--in particular in terms of his relationship with Jin GuangYao.
ENFJs radiate authenticity, concern and altruism, unafraid to stand up and speak when they feel something needs to be said. They find it natural and easy to communicate with others, especially in person, and their Intuitive (N) trait helps people with the ENFJ personality type to reach every mind, be it through facts and logic or raw emotion. ENFJs easily see people’s motivations and seemingly disconnected events, and are able to bring these ideas together and communicate them as a common goal with an eloquence that is nothing short of mesmerizing.
The interest ENFJs have in others is genuine, almost to a fault – when they believe in someone, they can become too involved in the other person’s problems, place too much trust in them.
Jin GuangYao-->ESFJ (?) “The Consul”
Tumblr media
This one I’m less certain of--FJ seems certain to me, but I/E and N/S is a bit debatable. I think he best meets the description of “the Consul” though.
ESFJs are more concerned with fashion and their appearance, their social status and the standings of other people... ESFJs love to be of service, enjoying any role that allows them to participate in a meaningful way, so long as they know that they are valued and appreciated. Coming to terms with their sensitivity is ESFJs’ biggest challenge – people are going to disagree and they’re going to criticize, and while it hurts, it’s just a part of life.
Nie MingJue-->ESTJ “The Executive”
Tumblr media
Less certain of E or I than for the other three, but the way he failed to overcome the challenge of how not everyone processes the same way seems very ESTJ to me.
ESTJs are representatives of tradition and order, utilizing their understanding of what is right, wrong and socially acceptable to bring families and communities together. Embracing the values of honesty, dedication and dignity, people with the ESTJ personality type are valued for their clear advice and guidance, and they happily lead the way on difficult paths.
ESTJs are aware of their surroundings and live in a world of clear, verifiable facts – the surety of their knowledge means that even against heavy resistance, they stick to their principles and push an unclouded vision of what is and is not acceptable... they expect their reliability and work ethic to be reciprocated – people with this personality type meet their promises, and if partners or subordinates jeopardize them through incompetence or laziness, or worse still, dishonesty, they do not hesitate to show their wrath...
The main challenge for ESTJs is to recognize that not everyone follows the same path or contributes in the same way.
Nie HuaiSang-->ISFP “The Adventurer”
Tumblr media
Interesting name for a timid HuaiSang, but I really do think he is an ISFP. He is notably one of the few Nie Sect leaders who doesn’t seem at risk of dying from a qi deviation, and hence his less brutish way of ruling might actually, in the long run, be good for his sect. (NMJ would be proud... maybe.)
ISFP personality types are true artists, but not necessarily in the typical sense where they’re out painting happy little trees. Often enough though, they are perfectly capable of this. Rather, it’s that they use aesthetics, design and even their choices and actions to push the limits of social convention...
If these goals and principles are noble, ISFPs can act with amazing charity and selflessness – but it can also happen that people with the ISFP personality type establish a more self-centered identity, acting with selfishness, manipulation and egoism.
Wen Qing-->ENTJ “The Commander”
Tumblr media
Another one I feel fairly confident in. Wen Qing is a boss queen who gives birth to one of the series’ most iconic lines: “thank you, and I’m sorry.” She’s able to win the respect of Wen RouHan and even some people who hate the Wens, and thinks outside the box, theorizing on core transfer but hesitant to actually try it when she isn’t fully confident.
ENTJs are natural-born leaders. People with this personality type embody the gifts of charisma and confidence, and project authority in a way that draws crowds together behind a common goal. But unlike their Feeling (F) counterpart, ENTJs are characterized by an often ruthless level of rationality, using their drive, determination and sharp minds to achieve whatever end they’ve set for themselves.
Wen Ning-->INFP “The Mediator”
Tumblr media
I was torn between S and N, but I went with INFP because he is more focused on thinking about possibilities--in fact his arc is about learning to be confident in his own possibilities and to explore them.
INFP personalities are true idealists, always looking for the hint of good in even the worst of people and events, searching for ways to make things better. While they may be perceived as calm, reserved, or even shy, INFPs have an inner flame and passion that can truly shine.
Jin ZiXuan--> ESTP, “The Entrepreneur”
Tumblr media
Does he have enough of a personality for me to really analyze him? Maybe not but I like him a lot. He is motivated by what seems like pride at the beginning, but we later realize he cares deeply about the people around him and genuinely cared for Wei WuXian because his wife did.
Inspiring, convincing and colorful, they are natural group leaders, pulling everyone along the path less traveled, bringing life and excitement everywhere they go. Putting these qualities to a constructive and rewarding end is Entrepreneurs’ true challenge.
Jiang YanLi-->INFP “The Mediator”
Tumblr media
Shijie was indeed the mediator between her two brothers, and it’s her legacy of love and kindness, of wanting Wei WuXian to live even at the expense of her own life no matter what he’d done, that makes a huge difference.
Luckily, like the flowers in spring, INFP’s affection, creativity, altruism and idealism will always come back, rewarding them and those they love perhaps not with logic and utility, but with a world view that inspires compassion, kindness and beauty wherever they go.
Jin Ling-->ESTP, “The Entrepreneur”
Tumblr media
Jin Ling is the hardest one to pin down and I’m mad because he’s one of my favorites. He is highly emotional, but I think he’s an ESTP like his dad.
Entrepreneurs keep their conversation energetic, with a good dose of intelligence, but they like to talk about what is – or better yet, to just go out and do it. Entrepreneurs leap before they look, fixing their mistakes as they go, rather than sitting idle, preparing contingencies and escape clauses.
Lan SiZhui-->INFJ “The Advocate”
Tumblr media
My type.
INFJs indeed share a unique combination of traits: though soft-spoken, they have very strong opinions and will fight tirelessly for an idea they believe in. They are decisive and strong-willed, but will rarely use that energy for personal gain – INFJs will act with creativity, imagination, conviction and sensitivity not to create advantage, but to create balance.
Lan JingYi-->ESFP “The Entertainer”
Tumblr media
He’s pretty easy to figure out. I constantly wonder how he fares in the Gusu Lan Sect.
...they love putting on a show for their friends too, chatting with a unique and earthy wit, soaking up attention and making every outing feel a bit like a party. Utterly social, ESFPs enjoy the simplest things, and there’s no greater joy for them than just having fun with a good group of friends.
Xue Yang-->ESTP “The Entrepreneur”
Tumblr media
ESTPs are the likeliest personality type to make a lifestyle of risky behavior. They live in the moment and dive into the action – they are the eye of the storm. People with the ESTP personality type enjoy drama, passion, and pleasure, not for emotional thrills, but because it’s so stimulating to their logical minds. They are forced to make critical decisions based on factual, immediate reality in a process of rapid-fire rational stimulus response.
A-Qing-->ESTP “The Entrepreneur”
Tumblr media
Yes, I think A-Qing is the same type as Xue Yang, which doesn’t surprise me because they are actually extremely blatant foils in the story. It’s funny the description notes how observant ESTPs tend to be, because that’s something A-Qing absolutely is, noticing Xue Yang’s minuscule changes in expression and keeping her from trusting him, and Xue Yang is also incredibly observant of her words to realize she might just not be blind after all.
With perhaps the most perceptive, unfiltered view of any type, ESTPs have a unique skill in noticing small changes. Whether a shift in facial expression, a new clothing style, or a broken habit, people with this personality type pick up on hidden thoughts and motives where most types would be lucky to pick up anything specific at all. ESTPs use these observations immediately, calling out the change and asking questions, often with little regard for sensitivity. ESTPs should remember that not everyone wants their secrets and decisions broadcast.
Xiao XingChen-->ISFJ “The Defender”
Tumblr media
The following description really reminds me of XXC especially after he hears the story about Xue Yang’s love of candy as a child, and every single day thereafter buys him and A-Qing a candy.
ISFJs take their responsibilities personally, consistently going above and beyond, doing everything they can to exceed expectations and delight others, at work and at home... Naturally social, an odd quality for Introverts, ISFJs utilize excellent memories not to retain data and trivia, but to remember people, and details about their lives. When it comes to gift-giving, ISFJs have no equal, using their imagination and natural sensitivity to express their generosity in ways that touch the hearts of their recipients
Song Lan-->INTJ “The Architect”
Tumblr media
There’s not as much to go on for Song Lan, but what we do have seems to suggest INTJ to me, particularly in how someone who would spend years looking for a friend would refuse to consider that Xue Yang might have changed at all.
INTJs are simultaneously the most starry-eyed idealists and the bitterest of cynics, a seemingly impossible conflict.
Yu ZiYuan-->ESTJ “The Executive”
Tumblr media
Welp. The Purple Spider is definitely an Executive.

There is such inherent romanticism with Lan XiChen and Nie MingJue recognizing one another at the garden of the Damsel of Annual Blossoms in Tanzhou. It is the parallel of spirits waiting to be reminded of the one they love and the broken pieces of an abandoned garden where once everything was grand and beautiful.
Lan XiChen is night hunting not far from this garden before the scene takes place. With the hope of running into him, Wangxian and the juniors pick it as a campsite.
The garden was big and majestic yet had no-one to care for it...
In the garden, there was a pavilion and a few fences, a table and a few stools, all made of stone, for people to enjoy the scenery. However, through years of wind and rain, one corner had fallen off the pavilion and two of the stools had toppled over. There were no plants or flowers in the garden, only brittle branches and withered leaves. This garden had been abandoned since a long time ago.
[Ch. 45, Exiled Rebel Translations]
The place is now in a sorry state. Abandoned, beaten, gone to ruin. Where once a few stools stood, just as three sworn brothers once stood, now only one remains. There is no lovely scenery to enjoy any longer, however, and so no one comes here anymore.
And yet it was once “big and majestic” and no doubt beautiful in its prime once the legend surrounding it is shared:
[Lan SiZhui,] "Ten years ago, an endless number of people would come to this garden." [Ch. 45]
Ten years ago is also within the realm of when Nie MingJue died. Both Nie MingJue and the garden had returned to the Earth since then, but that is now and this is then:
[Lan SiZhui,] “The legends have it that the earliest owner of the garden was a poet. He planted these flowers himself and treated them as friends, reciting poetry here everyday.” [Ch. 45]
Lan XiChen who planted the start of friendship. He no doubt desired companionship for himself like he would later desire someone to offer companionship to his little brother. To his new companion Nie MingJue, he played music. And not just any music: Lan XiChen found one of the more obscure and difficult pieces of music in the Lan collection, practiced and perfected it, and played it for Nie MingJue’s sake. He wanted Nie MingJue to live, to thrive, to bloom for years. It is a song like no other. A song played in an act of pure love.
Nie MingJue does not know much about music, just as a flower does not know much about the sun, but he senses the serene love endowed in those notes all the same. It is warm and beautiful and bright.
Consider then the parallel roles to this legend: the poet is Lan XiChen, the poems are music, and the spirit/damsel is Nie MingJue.
[Lan SiZhui,] “Affected by the emotions of the poetry, a spirit crystallized from the flora of the garden and became the Damsel of Annual Blossoms.” [Ch. 45]
Nie MingJue is effected by emotions the most out of anyone. By Baxia's fury, by the Song of Clarity's calm, by the Collection of Turmoil's chaos, by his own desires. As a fierce corpse, his body is animated by his spirit alone, effected solely by emotions. It is resentful energy which drives him now, but that was not always the case.
No one would accuse Nie MingJue of being flower-like, but his realm has always been a garden where he has protected green and growing things. It is no accident that the two most artistic characters with elegant hobbies, Lan XiChen and Nie HuaiSang, are the two people closest to him.
So Nie MingJue is like the Damsel who is not technically a flower, either, despite being in the garden.
Both Nie MingJue and the Damsel have also become spirits who know only how to show love or wrath. There is no middle ground.
[Lan SiZhui,] “When someone came, if their poetry was decent and allowed her to remember the one who planted her, she would be happy and give them a flower.” [Ch. 45]
“Under the moonlight, if one should recite poetry, when she deems it fine, she grants them an annual blossom, the fragrance of which persists for three years.” [Ch. 45]
Poetry that allows the Damsel to remember the poet.
Music that allows Nie MingJue to remember Lan XiChen.
“Under the moonlight,” the legend says, is when this meeting should occur.
Lan XiChen arrives at night and brings his music with him.
[Lan SiZhui,] “If the poetry was wrong or did not sound pleasing, she would emerge from the bushes and hurl a flower onto the person’s face. The one who had been attacked would faint and realize that they had been thrown out of the garden after they woke up.” [Ch. 45]
Both the Damsel and Nie MingJue possess a savage temper. There are no more flowers in this garden for throwing, however, which calls upon other means should the offering not suit. The smashed tree is evidence of that.
Three men approach with music: Wei WuXian, Lan WangJi, and Lan XiChen.
Lan WangJi and Wei WuXian are the first to offer their music to the spirit of Nie MingJue:
Taking out his guqin, [Lan WangJi] looked down and curved his finger, plucking one string. As if it was a formless arrow, the sound whistled as it whipped toward the corpse. The headless corpse slashed with the sword and fractured the note into pieces. Lan WangJi strummed downward. All seven strings vibrated, singing with even greater power. At the same time, Wei WuXian pulled out his bamboo flute and accompanied with an abnormally shrill pitch. It was as though the sharp blades of swords and sabers rained down from the sky!
The headless corpse lunged again. [Ch. 46]
It’s no good. Nie MingJue also wields Bichen at this point so his power is second to none. Their music isn't pleasing to him. It has no effect on him. Their music reminds him of no one. It is aggressive and fierce and battle ready, so he fights back. He moves to strike them down, to knock them out, to cast them out of the garden.
Once Lan XiChen recovers his senses, he offers his music next.
Even after a decade when such memories ought to have blurred and faded, he recognizes Nie MingJue by the shape and movement of his body. Rather than attack, his music is soothing. It is serene. It is kind when Nie MingJue has only known fury.
Nie MingJue is an angry spirit, a corpse standing in the graveyard of a once majestic garden, but Lan XiChen’s music reaches out with a gentle touch because this is the spirit of the one he loves, the companion who was always by his side, the one he had played for everyday when the garden was lush and full and they were together.
Raising Liebing to his lips, [Lan XiChen] started to play as well. Wei WuXian didn’t know if it was only his imagination, but as soon as the soft, serene tone of the xiao appeared, the corpse’s movement paused. For a moment, he seemed to have stood still and listened, then turned around, as though he wanted to see who was the one playing the music. [Ch. 46]
Nie MingJue knows this music. The music, the poem, that reminds him of his musician, his poet. Unlike Wangxian’s music, there is no mention that this music has any special technique. It could very well just be a song.
A song played by Lan XiChen for Nie MingJue.
Nie MingJue, who lacks a head, does not need ears to know this song is as pleasing as it is familiar. Lan XiChen’s music is part of Nie MingJue’s very spirit, a part of his very soul. Lan XiChen had planted a seed deep in Nie MingJue’s heart long ago and it lies there still, forever ready to grow.
And there the musician and his spirit meet again, but not as they once were. The once beautiful garden lies broken in the wake of their absence just as Nie MingJue will in moments lie broken, too, in the absence of Lan XiChen’s music.
Broken but not forgotten. A flower needs sunlight to grow and love cannot thrive on its own, but even abandoned it is not forgotten. This is a garden under Gusu Lan jurisdiction. Lan XiChen night hunts nearby. He will have seen this barren, broken place time and time again. A place for two lovers to sit and enjoy the scenery, to enjoy each other's company, before finally returning home.
And after ten years of the garden lying in wait, ten years after they lay apart, it is in this place that Lan XiChen gets to play for him again, and it is in this place that Nie MingJue's spirit once more falls in love with him.
