Before I talk a LOT (I'm not joking, A LOT)

About this au, how I stumbled upon the idea, story and all in a rushed format,

It started with me thinking and wondering about a specific fic that is unrelated to this post, frankly different fandom, and I was wondering how it would play out in a movie format, but seeing as the fic in question currently is unfinished and won't be for a while I decided to direct my attention to other fandoms, got to DCA fandom, came up with a few cute ideas i didn't write down for unfinished fics, for the record I do think it would be interesting if Solar Lunacy was a musical just saying, and then I started to think about ok what fics ARE fini-

SLEUTH JESTERS HECK YEAH

Unfortunately at the moment I don't have any digital sketches to share for some of these points and the sketches I do have are pretty messy SO I'LL JUST RAMBLE cause I already wrote down a lot of these separately

Firstly, I imagine this kind of musical being in universe kind of au. Possibly an extension of the Actor AU where the original media (tv show? movie?) got so popular it got a musical adaptation

I imagine the actual music, whether the songs or just sound track, would be heavily inspired by Jazz or smthn. Like, the genre of music most popular during the time period Sleuth Jesters is in ish. It would still be musical-like but you can tell the genre they are going for

And before continuing, to get around not actually saying "y/n" on stage cause that might be a little awkward MAYBE there could be some kind of special sound affect for the actors mics that the audience knows is y/n's name?? Half baked tho

COSTUMES

Sun, Moon and Eclipse (at least) would have highly decorated masks to match the original just added onto because they are on stage. Masks, so that there are more options for who to cast. To make up for this, the actors have to make it clear in their body language to make up for lack of expression

in productions with higher budget mayhaps one function could be the eyes have options for what emotion they could express

In most productions there will be sound effects in the background that mimic the noise that Sun Moon and Eclipse make as they move. Or at least be incorporated into the sound track ooooo

Y/n's clothes would have an easy to notice difference in quality compared to the DCAs, which makes the bell and ribbons much more noticeable on stage

Smaller note but I think y/n's make up could be kind of fun with how they show the y and n on their face

Would probably have a wig colored various shades of silver but not required

FIRST SONG FIRST SONG FIRST SONG

Would be the introduction (of course) and depict the first chapter and likely have something to do with "Until Next Time". I think possibly it would have little breaks in the song to fit in the dialogue

Honestly, in an adaptation there might just be more scenes added between the earlier chapters to fill in points in time or smthn

OR (the answer I like better) The first act uses time between chapters to fill in reader watcher on backstories or past's of characters

Actually yeah little hints would be packed in the first half

Any other songs could be filled in for the boys or y/n that could have the potential to return as a Reprise

Now listen Mandatory Eclipse Villain song(s)

this is not optional

Duets Duets DUETS

One duet could be between characters that are foils or mirror each other but it's one of those duets that have different lyrics that still match up musically

Particularly I think the latter could be used for Sun and Moon's complicated relationship with Eclipse but not completely sure where that would be, probably second half, speaking of which...

ACT ONE ends in the chapter that Y/N has to return the favor to Eclipse, where he crashes the party and they go with him, reassuring Sun and Moon that they allways can wiggle out of situations

REPRISE OF THE FIRST SONGGGGGG

Until Next Time Reprise

Which will have a moment of silence after, showing their mutual understanding yet make it perfectly clear sun and moon don't want to do resort to this

Doesn't last to long as it proceeds with the sound track DROPPING in tone as Eclipse stuffs y/n into the car, that is actually just a prop that leads to the back stage

FADE TO BLACK INTERMISSION

ACT TWO (any major costume changes or forever hold your piece) I think would start off with Sun and Moon's dilemmas first before getting back to y/n

WHICH would likely cut to y/n maybe already in the burgundy shirt but meh that's not solid

I think the way Eclipse gives them the burgundy ribbon and bell could be changed in an adaptation of the story since it would be easier I imagine to show it later than in a car set piece

(Admittedly I have to reread these specific chapters to know specifically the order) But when Eclipse drops the bombshell he knows their past, and I think he leaves them alone for a bit after that, SONG TIME (though song could still happen with him there honestly)

Something similar to the theme "I thought I burned everything" and would just

And after that likely more backstory could be cut to depending on what it is and how relevant it is at that point. WOuld be much grimmer in tone but hey it's the second act.

Though if this opportunity is taken, this could be reprised later when Y/N proposes to the boys, with the necklaces to show being more comfortable with their past

More song opportunities with Y/N's trust issues, Sun and Moon's brother issues, etc

Final act-ish, where y/n first runs away after Sun and Moon "find out" and from there would have more focus on the score than any songs that could be fit into that small frame.

My thoughts went kind of to Heather's Dead Girl Walking Reprise and then Veronica and JD's tussle toward the end if songs got implemented there

AND OF COURSE The moment of Eclipse's death is really what makes me think this would be adapted into a musical in universe

Because it does kind of fit the bill for being tragic

You feel bad enough for what could have been

But also remember "Nah that bitch deserves it"

But also.. it's sad

PERFECT FOR MUSICAL ENDING

After proposal, there is possibility to do a QUICK little glance into the future at the end, not unlike Dear Evan Hansen's ending, but maybe not

I forgot to mention earlier, but the character that is revealed to be a spy for Eclipse at the police station I'd imagine would have hints on their clothing (like burgundy) that would foreshadow their side

Eclipse would bow by himself, flaunty as ever, yet you can still kind of tell the actor is kind of a sweetheart

Sun and Moon would enter, bow together and then welcome Y/n

Who would get to bow on their own, then with Sun and Moon

Then the rest of the cast is welcomed

How the arrangement would go from left to right I was thinking

Law Enforcement and basic background cast making up crowds, Freddy, Gregory, Sun, Y/N, Moon, Eclipse, Michael, Other Aftons and Spy, rest of Law Enforcement and basic background cast making up crowds

so. the ml movie huh. hm (big ol post with spoilers under this cut btw)

so after almost 10 years of being on this bug and cat train they finally get a big ol expensive movie and I think it was. fine? maybe? there's a lot going on here and while I don't think I can call it good and mean it I don't think it was the worst thing ever. a 6? out of 10 feels kinda right for me. got a lot to say here fwiw so buckle in if ya wanna read it all lol

main issue I feel is obviously them trying to adapt 5 seasons, each of which was dozens of hours at least, and a near decade of storytelling into a movie that doesn't even hit two hours. no idea why - I imagine the money ran out tbh - but running through the entire thrust of the series in ~1h40m movie just. was never gonna work man. feel like there had to be better options out there, like just adapting Origins with some episodes from S1 thrown in between them getting their miraculous and Hawkmoth revealing himself or something. idk. I ain't a writer

but then also I felt despite the short runtime that it sorta dragged on at times? like it got stuck spinning wheels here and there. Marinette constantly needing her confidence boosted even after being Ladybug for so long was weird. it's so strange bc they flashed through a dozen akuma - some of which looked kinda cool btw, be neat if they made the jump to the show - and yet it felt like there'd been no progress made? like the flow of time in the movie just. didn't work. a lot of stuff just sort of happens at you and you gotta hang onto whatever ya like and hope it doesn't just vanish in the river of events

voice acting in English was like. pretty solid honestly. maybe the best performances I'd heard from that side of the dub tho I have no idea what they were thinking with the singing voice for Marinette at least. couldn't really tell if Adrien's was still Bryce (I don't think it was but it wasn't as jarring) and I know Keith sang for Gabe's songs but whoever they got for Marinette just. wasn't even close to Marinette's normal speaking voice and it's super distracting. really weird choice. no shade on the singer tho she was solid imo just like. no connection to Marinette's normal voice really took me out of it

also the songs were kind of nonsensical most of the time and there's way too many of them. some are kinda good - Gabe's, Chat's and tbh I kinda liked the one over the credits to name a few - but like. they were not good enough for there to be what felt like 6-7 different songs in a movie that doesn't even crack 2 hours lmao

they made a ton of changes in terms of the story and general world and I actually kind of liked some of them - Ladybug learning to swing through the yoyo (which had a neat redesign) and doing so using that Ladybug vision was cool, I appreciate that we get a reveal and how it's done even if the end card was brutal, the miraculous seeking them out felt more like nice compared to just having the weight of the world dropped on them by some ancient man lol - but then there's others I didn't. Ladybug just never uses the cure until the end? I guess? she also doesn't purify the first akuma I don't think and like. nothing happens? Adrien's just sorta out and about? going to the school already? he gets a really understated intro imo. Gabriel sort of doesn't get an ending. I'd assume he's in jail? we get almost none of Adrien's perspective on getting the ring which is really weird

and that sorta extends into my feeling that somehow we did not get enough Gabriel in this. really weird saying that after having enough of that bum for the last 4 years of my life but his motives are carried hard by my knowledge of the show, and even then they're not really shown enough - he's not shown enough, and I don't feel Adrien is either. neither is the school setting or side characters, heck I'd say Adrinette gets kinda shafted overall since most of the development they get is in a montage sequence. there's a lot chopped out of this for the sake of a brevity that doesn't feel all that brief?

there's some good stuff in here for sure. the animation is undeniably pretty and slick even if some models are kinda wack. most of the action was fun and cool, the final sequence with Chat running up the tower and such was neat. I loved the Ladynoir something fierce honestly, the bantering and the sparring and the getting closer and closer. missed them being like that a lot tbh, someone on staff clearly did too. couple of jokes got me too like the opener with Chloe getting a single drop of coffee on her shirt lmao

but then there's a lot of stuff that really didn't work for me. Plagg being reduced to a fucking fart joke kind of made me mad lmao. them being super inconsistent with their powers was so weird. no lucky charm?? WHAT?? did I miss something?? no side character getting any focus beyond Alya was disappointing too and even Alya just dips out of the story after a while. breaking out into song once every like 15 minutes got old kinda quick too regardless of song quality (tho it was funny that Marinette seemed aware of the fact that she'd just participated in a musical number at one point lol)

Fu opens the movie with some really weird monologue and basically dips after the first akuma and they just. never find him again? he plays zero role beyond that point? Adrinette's first meeting is kinda cute in an understated sort of way but it's also sort of nothing and doesn't feel like a lingering thing for long afterwards - it ain't no umbrella scene dude. also Chat Noir seemingly drops the "my mom died btw" thing on Ladybug like she'd know that and she just sort of goes "Ah. Sorry, Chat." and that was. super fucking weird lmao

like I said. there's a lot going on - tho I gotta say for sure the writing was not consistently good. there were moments, flashes, Ladynoir is the strongest thing in the movie imo but there's so many fucking craters in terms of quality that it makes me so happy we get what we do in the show

on the whole I felt the movie was somehow way too condensed and yet too long at the same time. it felt like it was made by someone who really likes the surface details of the series but not the whole thing and like that's fine but I wouldn't say it was a good representation of the show. like the things I like about the movie are kind of all things I've liked about the show, and I like them more so because of that but also like I can't say the movie was good just bc I like the show lol

shallow is a good word for it I think. a flashy, expensive hour or so with little more beneath the surface which I feel sorta betrays the show it's based on where it's cutesy on the surface but has more going on under it. which like this feels very much made for the younger demographic and those that aren't into the show, like sort of an ad for someone's ideal version series even if it sorta strays really far from the show itself. as if someone perhaps in charge of this movie was clinging to what elements of their flagship series that they thought were keeping their company afloat and foolishly believed they could do it better than the creator or any other actual writer. wonder who that could be. anyway

as an adaptation of the show I don't think it was good overall and as a movie on its own it was like. fine. imo. wouldn't sway people into picking the series up but definitely not the worst movie ever made. super safe and super shallow, really messy with a few bright spots thrown in. a cluttered Ladynoir reveal fic where the Ladynoir bits are good and the rest is not. etc.

I like it but mostly bc I love the show - I would not introduce someone to the series with this and might not even urge casual fans to watch it either tbh. real mixed bag imo

also what happened to the "Awakening" subtitle? I kinda liked it and it's just gone. weird

Last weekend I watched Bataashi Kingyo (Swimming Upstream), a Japanese movie from the 90s, adapted from manga of same name.

It's one of those movies I wish I watched 15 years ago, you know, when I was 15.

It's about a teenage boy Kaoru who is all into motorcycles, then one day, as he passes by his school's swimming pool, a girl accidentally pours a bucket of water on him. In frustration, he starts shouting at the girl, but when he realises that's Sonoko, the leading girl of the swim team, his tone changes and all frustration melts away. It's the moment he falls in love with the girl, decides to quit riding his bike with the boys, and joins the swimming team. He doesn't even know how to swim, but he's confident to win Sonoko's heart by becoming an Olympic medalist.

Of course, the movie isn't about his journey towards becoming a professional swimmer, it covers a fairly short period of time during which Kaoru constantly pursues Sonoko. There are some more spoilers ahead - all the way to the blue The End.

His swimming and training skills are only those of a beginner and willpower alone is not enough for an overnight transformation. His sport journey can be compared to that of winning over Sonoko. While chasing the object of his desire, he's tactless, impatient, stubborn, self-centred and doesn't understand a word no. His sense of self is extremely distorted. He's the main character in his own story, just like any other boy, but he's also convinced he's the main character in everyone else's story too. Especially Sonoko's, which couldn't be further from the reality. Meanwhile, the only person who sees him as the main character is the mechanic girl, his friend who is in love with him, Puu.

In this silly little triangle, he doesn't care much about this bike girl, just like Sonoko doesn't care much about him either. And isn't that just a typical teenage love story? Puu is really awesome tho.

While Sonoko is annoyed and repulsed by Kaoru's pushy behaviour, she eats her frustration away in hopes to gain weight and become less pretty to Kaoru. It is the last act of desperation, since everything else she tried didn't work. Not even fake dating with Nagai, the number 1 swimmer of their high school.

Of course, due to overeating and a change of lifestyle, she ends up depressed. And despite all of it, Kaoru still sees her the way she is, and is still just as in love as he was the first time he saw her. Once he finally understands his actions are hurting Sonoko, he gives up. In the meantime, Sonoko got so used to his presence that she starts missing him. She loses the weight and decides to pursue him. Eventually, they both end up having a fight and a conversation followed by Kaoru's love confession. The End.

This one was a lovely break from both life and kdrama for me. It is such a cliché but it depicts how boys behave during their teenage years and, to be honest, it also depicts the majority of grown men as well, those who never grow up to stop the kind of stubborn and annoying act of an immature teenager. It also shows the neverending harmful coping mechanisms girls and boys run to in acts of desperation. The main characters are teenagers but I can't stop thinking how not much changes in the adult age. Overeating, social distancing, procrastination, self-hatred. Such typical behaviour for a woman when she's hurting. And stubbornness, spite, persistence and exploitation, as traits of generally extremely immature and hurting men.

It's a good movie with everything in mind, especially for these sultry summer days, when all you need is some icy drink, deep shade and something to play in the background. And, you know, you can always not overthink it to this extent and make it a bit more enjoyable.

Have any of you watched Swimming Upstream already? I haven't found many posts about this movie at all, which could be just Tumblr search engine doing a lousy job, again. Sure, it isn't as popular nowadays nor is it trending, but I find it kind of nice to get familiar with this kind of "old school media." Acting isn't superb, and neither is the plot, but filming is so calming and beautiful I can't help but recommend this one (⁠◕⁠ᴗ⁠◕⁠✿⁠)

I hope the show isn't making the slow burn/less sex change for season 2 because people were complaining about Daphne and Simon getting together too soon last season. A couple getting married in the middle of the book is pretty standard for HR. I actually think I've read more books were the couple gets married at the beginning rather then the end. Or at least they have sex sooner even if they're not married.

Here's how I feel about it, having not seen the show and being determined to judge it for myself.

While I think that you can ABSOLUTELY have a great romance without explicit onscreen sex; and while I think there can be a trade-off for having fewer sex scenes (if the quality of them is good, if the ramp up makes them hotter, if the nature in which they occur is more exciting)... I don't think there's going to be a way I won't have some level of issue with the show having less sex in principle, if that makes sense?

It's because, I think, it feels like a response to the general prudishness people have been displaying towards onscreen sex as of late, and there's not a way that it doesn't read as more of an effort to ensemble the show and make it less of a romance. Because while I definitely get why they changed plot elements (I genuinely do not care about that by and large, unless the plot elements changed negatively affect characterization; I liked TVWLM, but I have no deep emotional attachment to the book) I think that the amount of subplots present suggest that... Everything could've happened a bit faster if we weren't also giving screentime to the Featherington heir, or Eloise Does Feminism. Which doesn't just mean you could have more sex--it also means you could have more emotional depth for Kate. Which would PROBABLY include her sexual evolution, as is often the case with HR.

If there hadn't been a precedent set with season 1, if this was the same couple we were returning to who we'd already seen fuck like crazy, dialing down sex would have no... idk, lol, political significance for me? But as a romance reader, knowing that trad publishing is toning sex down (releasing more tame romcom books, getting rid of stepbacks and shirtless men on covers and replacing them with cartoon covers that make the book look appropriate for 12 year olds) it's a bummer to watch the first true historical romance novel adaptation do the same thing.

Also, I don't really care about the success of the show because I don't think there's a chance that they get to the couple I care about anyway lol... But I don't know how having a dozen articles with titles like "Bridgerton Still Good, Way Less Sex Tho" is going to help promote the show. Like. I feel very strongly that the audience that originally watched watched in part because they heard of fuckathons occurring.

People want to go on main and act like they hate seeing sex, and Mine Eyes Have Been Violated By The Filth, but lol. The numbers would suggest that they're actually turning the fuck out to watch people fuck it out. The fact that the 50 Shades movies, LEGITIMATELY horrible movies based on horrible books, made as much money at the box office as they did? Before direct to streaming releases corresponding with theater releases were a thing? Is huge. People trotted out to actual movie theaters because they thought they were gonna see that girl get her back cracked (the sex scenes in 50 Shades are actually v. lame, but the promise of them is the thing).

Add in the prospect of streaming, where you don't even have to watch with other people if you don't want to... Look at how well 365 DNI did at Netflix. I know that a lot of y'all reject that movie (a film I hold as a BADGE OF FUCKING HONOR) but that shit was all over the place in their top 10 for weeks.

Sex does sell. And the great thing about having sex scenes as opposed to not having them is that if you want to be a prude about it, you can also fast forward. You can't add them back in. And I just don't think that the correct response to people flipping out because the hot duke was gone and where will the sex appeal be now with Generic White Men 1-3 in the leading roles was....... to dial down the sex scenes lol. Like, give this Generic White Man his chance to show that he can throw down, you know?

So while I may still fully enjoy the love story and enjoy the sex that is there, I know myself--there's no way that I wouldn't have appreciated more, there's no way I won't read into why there's less (I mean, even aside from Anthony and Kate, bizarre that you don't hear about Benedict fucking around in the background like Anthony did in season 1), and there's no way that they wouldn't have been better off keeping the levels where they were in s1. Which you could definitely do, while maintaining a slow burn. If anything, I think you need to make the payoff for the slow burn very worth it.

2. What's your feel-good movie? I'd say Spirited Away, I love that movie.

3. What's your favorite candle scent? I'm gonna be honest with you, I'm not big on candles. I like them, but I hardly know any scents by name. I definitely don't like anything too sweet tho.

4. What flower would you like to be given? I've always liked sunflowers. But lilacs and lavander also have a special place in my heart.

5. Who do you feel most you around? Definitely my mom.

6. Say three nice things about yourself (three physical and three non-physical). Oh god (can you feel the panic here?) I like my hair, it's probably one of the things I like most on myself. I like my eyes too, they have a pretty color. I like all my tattoos, if this doesn't count as physical, I'm also starting to like the shape of my body.

I like how I can easily adapt to different environments. I like my will to do things and not stop until I get them right. And I like how quick I can learn new skills.

7. What color brings you peace? I'd say a very light shade of blue mixed with green, that reminds me of the ocean.

So, about me. I have an actual name but I don't think I've heard it in months😃, instead I have a bunch of nicknames! (Rion, ri, oreo, onion, o, etc), I'm actually nb so I chose that name, however I 100% consider naming myself Arson💀My pronouns are they/them and I'm about 5'5, I have short, fluffy brown hair that I usually dye the front blue. I'm Asian hispanic, but I really don't look like either- my favorite foods are either really spicy and salty or sweet. Not the overwhelming chemical sweet tho, like a natural sweet flavor. My personality type is infp, and ig when I first meet people I can be shy (that's an understatement, I was mute for the first week of school🕳🏃‍♂️) but once I get to know people I can be pretty chaotic (once again, arson). I'm not a 100% demon spawn though, I don't really like making scenes in public and I probably will cry if I do- but I still have fun lol. I'm also the person who copes with severe mental health issues using humor, to an alarming degree 😔 I'm the therapist friend when really I'm the one who needs therapy. I also have a social battery that can die at random times, so I really like/need friends who can handle random mood changes of me going from energetic to silent in seconds. Academically, I'm really book smart, I'm a tutor, but my grades don't reflect it. I tend to procrastinate a lot and avoid studying, usually I catch myself last minute or trust memory on tests, but every now and then there's something that tanks my grades. I'm not very athletic, but I still try to play sports. I enjoy the feeling when I do something right, but the rest of the time I usually beat myself up for messing up.

And now just random facts 😃👍

My favorite color is yellow, not the bright eye sore shade that makes you want to throw up, but the nice softer, light shade. And I like anything that comes with that color! (Sunflowers, flowy sundresses and flip flops, summer activities, burning concrete, warm rain, etc). Nobody knows my music taste, it changes weekly, however I usually come back to mitski/cavetown or summer themed songs a lot! I enjoy playing music, but I have the curse of being a fast learner so that usually leads to be being bored and learning a new instrument at any given chance. And my birthday is a weird date that fucks with zodiacs so I can be considered either a leo or cancer, my personality changes a bunch, so take your pick lol. (Though emotionally I tend to be cancerous, I just express it and show it in a way a leo would) And someday I wanna be a long term traveler, or a florist. Just a job that makes me happy :). And I guess if I had to classify my aesthetic it would be bloomcore or soft grunge. I like wearing big sweaters and if I could I would wear a bunch of butterfly clips in my hair and wear mom jeans. (I would also wear man crushers, I mean, platforms if I was confident)

Aaaannnnd that was really long sorry!

although i hate unpredictable situations and having to quickly adapt to new settings, i think i adapt pretty quickly too. flexible? easy-going? idk what’s the right way to call it but yeah something along those lines. good at it but i still enjoy my stability and calm don’t want to have to quickly adapt to new situations.

very emotional HAHAH used to be much worse but i often let my emotions rule my head. i think i’ve improved A LOT though i used to be so bad but i think i’m now able to make rational decisions even if im bawling LMFAO

this sounds like a compliment but i’ve been told this too often as well. i tend to be way too nice to people who don’t deserve it. even if the person doesn’t deserve it or they’ve pushed all my buttons in the wrong way possible, i would still try to be as nice and polite as i can. really helps with me working in the f&b industry lmfao.

45 M/M Gay Movies, Ranked

The other day I bit the bullet and decided to watch Brokeback Mountain for the first time. All I knew about that movie was that it was basically the CMBYN of yesteryear and somebody got killed with a tire iron. Anyways, so I finish the movie and realize that I’ve seen a *lot* of gay movies, especially in the last couple of years. So here are my rankings according to nothing but my personal preference. I won’t write about all of them, but you can ask about something if I leave it out.

I wish I could give you a rubric for this. The reality is, there are some radically different movies on this list with different tones and intentions. There’s buddy comedies, tearjerkers, small indie features, big theater releases. So trying to rank them all is TUFF.

The Way He Looks - Such a beautiful coming-of-age movie. Maybe the 2nd one I saw on this list? Perfect length, perfect characterization, simple yet compelling, clever. And nothing feels better than reaching a happy ending (for once, because some of these movies’ endings-- SHEESH) that’s been earned. It just hasn’t been topped.

2. God’s Own Country

4. Kanarie - Yea, we don’t talk about this movie enough. It’s one of the most recent that I’ve seen. Beautiful. The way that it references apartheid and the war to reflect the protagonist’s feelings? Flawless.

5. Jongens - The first movie that I saw on this list, gets many a bonus point for that.

6. Moonlight - Yes, I am black. Yes, I understand this movie may be too low. Moonlight kind of scares me. In general, there’s not nearly enough discourse surrounding this one for me. But while it’s not exactly a popcorn-muncher, to me it’s the most personal movie on the list. When I look at Chiron and all that he’s been through, I can’t help but draw parallels to my own story up to this point. It holds a mirror up to me in a way that no other movie on this list does. That makes me uncomfortable.

But it is so poetic. Have you guys seen the script for this? The directing, the SOUNDTRACK, the acting. Phenomenal.

7. Weekend

8. Call Me By Your Name - Yes, I am aware of people’s beef with this one. Yes, I understand a lot of people may feel this one is overrated. While I do think this one gets worse on rewatch, the truth is, it’s not really *that* overrated because hot take: most (meaning over half) of the movies on this list range somewhere from “just okay” to “painstakingly bad”.

It’s the score, the cinematography, the subtext in most all of the dialogue, the acting, the way that you can smell the apricots through the fucking screen. People who say this movie is a vacation ad are fucking CORRECT. One of my biggest gripes however is that it’s too fucking long. And uh, that age difference...

And Armie Hammer’s a weirdo...

9. Dating Amber* - Dating Amber has one of those “Duh” premises that sounds like it could’ve been done like 30 times before yet I can’t think of any other examples of it. So what you’d think would be a wacky premise actually turns out to be a frankly poignant movie with an emotional story arc for the main two characters.

10. Hello Stranger: The Movie* - This movie, which is the first sequel (sorta) on the list, frankly had no business being as good as it was. Even though the web series is required viewing, I felt the movie fixed like all of the series’ issues: pacing, lack of compelling drama, the awkward quarantine format. The drama and stakes are there without us having to visit Angst City. And the theme and the ending reprise is HEAT.

11. Uncle Frank* - Uncle Frank is like The Help of gay movies. Like The Help, it’s *overall* a short, sweet and fluffy movie set decades ago. Like The Help, you’ll still come out of it feeling pretty good even though it has some dark moments. Also like The Help, you’ll wonder after the fact if the central white girl absolutely needed to be so...well, central for this story to be told. Bonus points for Paul Bettany and Character Actress Margo Martindale.

12. Brokeback Mountain - Tragic.

13. Moffie - Set during the South African border war, same as Kanarie. You even hear the word “moffie” throughout Kanarie. Anyways, this is a war movie for the gays, and a very intense watch. I liked that it was a much more realistic view of what a soldier endured during that period, and of course on the flip side I thought it was more thorough in its depiction of the rampant racism. I gotta find a good book on this era.

14. A Moment In the Reeds

15. Get Real - Maybe the most out of place movie on the list. I need to rewatch it. I do recall absolutely loving the score, however. Like, I fucks with this:

16. Freier Fall - When I finished Brokeback I was like, “Wait, wasn’t that just Free Fall with extra steps?” And yea, it kinda is. But even discount Brokeback is still pretty good.

17. Beautiful Thing - There are few things to like about this one, the relationship between the two guys, the mother’s love for her son even though it’s not all rainbows, that nice little final scene. I did not care for the dark-skinned woman being portrayed as, you know, the drug abusing, school dropout, gossipy, butt of jokes neighbor. But that guy really looks like Tom Holland tho.

18. Love, Simon - It’s at this point that I move from “Yea, that movie is good, you should watch it!” to “Look, you may like it, you may not.”

19. The 10 Year Plan - This movie is so fucking cheesy that there was cheddar coming though my speakers. But when I think of “Hallmark/Lifetime, but for the gays” this is the crown jewel. There’s some other movies on this list that could’ve taken some notes.

20. The Christmas Setup* - The trend of fluffy-white-gay-cable-network-movie continues and in good form. It’s not deep. It’s not really thought provoking. It’s cute. Fran Drescher is there. You should watch it.

23. Alex Strangelove - In a unique twist, the emotional core of this one is arguably between Alex and his girlfriend. All that ends up happening, however, is we the viewer keep wanting more Alex/Elliott scenes; those are the most electric in the whole movie. The end result is a hot yet endearing mess.

24. Fair Haven

25. The Thing About Harry - Freeform’s attempt at making a cheesy rom-com for the gays. It’s...okay. I personally feel like the main character’s friend is highkey trifling but it’s whatever.

26. Your Name Engraved Herein* - So I guess I’ve decided I officially hate angst. I mean, I get how it’s often necessary to tell an effective story, but I’m just not here for 2 hour indie angst fests that get passed off as “high art” anymore. I cannot do it. Somehow this is Brokeback’s fault...there just has to be a better way to tell gay stories in the 2020′s. Anyways, the last song was fuego.

27. The Perfect Wedding - Easily the most bizarre movie on this list. It’s so bad, I liked it a lot.

28. Naz and Maalik - The first half of the movie with the two leads just riffing is some pretty great stuff. The back half starts throwing plot developments that are just less than interesting.

29. My Best Friend

30. The Curiosity of Chance

31. Being 17 - Boring. Angsty.

32. And Then We Danced

33. Center of My World - Has some of the most trifling characters EVER. I was so angry. This movie for me has *0* rewatchability.

34. Just Friends

35. 4th Man Out - This movie was basically “a bro/Hangover-style movie, but for the gays.” I absolutely love the intention, but the execution was a little shoddy. One day we’re gonna get a flawless movie that nails what this movie was going for. I hope we remember this movie whenever that day comes.

36. Latter Days - So fucking preachy.

37. GBF - Another bizarre one, but at least this movie gets how wacky it is.

38. Beach Rats

39. Shelter - I’ve noticed a lot of people like this one. To that I say...yikes. Remember that scene from Family Guy where Peter says he doesn’t care for The Godfather? I did not care for Shelter. It insists upon itself (not really, but still).

40. Handsome Devil

41. Esteros - It’s at this point of the list that we shift from “Movies that are the definition of ‘ight’ “ to “These movies are bad. Bad. BAAAAAD.”

42. Monster Pies

43. Were the World Mine - I couldn’t even finish it. Wanna watch a better musical? Go watch Kanarie. Wanna watch a better Shakespeare adaptation? The Lion King is the movie for you, or even fucking She’s the Man.

44. North Sea Texas - So boring. I actually think this one may need a rewatch, because I swear it shouldn’t have been as terrible as it was.

45. Salvation Army - I have no idea what this movie was going for. I understand that it is autobiographical, however...it simultaneously barely has any plot or character developments. This one has shades of Beach Rats, but it’s significantly worse, and I didn’t even like Beach Rats that much.

I never saw this show exceeding past 5 seasons max. Jodie is taking advantage of her youth and whiteness/white privilege whether she likes to realize it or not. It’s not a shade or diss to her either honestly it is what it is. She knows she’s the 20 something pretty white actress from killing Eve & she wants to go into the film industry. Sandra is gorgeous & talented too but she’s older & Hollywood isn’t as kind & generous to older women especially POC women. I wanna see her in more films tho

But you’re not going to see Sandra Oh in more films. You know that, right?

It’s not because she’s not good enough. Sandra is a transcendent talent, but she has been cursed with the great misfortune by her parents. They effed her up from the beginning. They didn’t make her White. Or a hot blond with more curves than the Pacific Coast Highway. She checks none of the boxes of what a leading lady in Hollywood

When you’re none of those things, you don’t get to play the lead in Oscar-bait films. Nobody is paring Oh up with Ryan Reynolds, Ben Affleck or Matt Damon or any other leading (White) man. Nobody who is spending hundreds of millions on tentpole summer movies is going to give women who look like Oh opportunities to play those kind of gigs.

Those gigs are reserved for other women. Women who look like Jodie Comer. This is not debatable. Sandra gets to play the “ethnic, but sassy” best friend of the White lead. That’s her lane as far as Hollywood is concerned. Asian women do not get to see their names above the title in Hollywood, which could be why it took a British woman adapting a novella by a British writer of a British MI5 agent who obviously was White to cast as its star someone who was neither White or British. On Grey’s Anatomy, Oh became a star, but never was the star. Ellen Pompeo was and is, as one might expect of the titular character of a show (with a notable exception I will address in a separate post). Pompeo is considered one of the more progressive actresses in Hollywood with a Black husband, biracial kids and a $20 million annual salary, but even she is not inoculated from being occasionally clueless.

Speaking on a podcast, Pompeo said about Oh who left Grey’s in 2014, "Sandra is a different kind of actor. … You never doubt whether Sandra Oh is gonna work again, right? She’ll work forever, right? But for me, I had to think, 'Am I gonna work again? Or am I going to be so typecast?' ”

What. The. Entire. FUCK.

If you ever needed evidence that TV BFF’s don’t know shit about each other away from the camera, this is Exhibit A. Hooray for Ellen P. for getting paid and all that, but she simply sounds stupid when she says Oh is going to “work forever” when in fact she barely worked at all for four years after she hung up her scrubs.

For four years after she left Grey’s Anatomy, Sandra Oh waited. She waited for offers to come in, juicy scripts that could come alive in the hands of her Golden Globe–winning talent. Sure, she did acting work here and there; a lead turn in the indie Catfight, a cheeky supporting role in the comedy Tammy, an arc in the drama series American Crime, a few plays. But there was nothing on the scale of Cristina Yang, the sarcastic surgeon she played on Grey’s for nearly a decade—a standout performance that turned the Korean-Canadian actress into a household name, and earned her five Emmy nominations in a row. The lack of certain offers was, Oh says, heartbreaking at the time.

These days, though, the deeply pragmatic actress says she’s letting go of expectations: “That’s where I’m at. Benefiting from being born White isn’t an original sin conceived by Comer. It predates her. Today, she may be aware the pie isn’t sliced evenly between herself and Oh, but it wasn’t for Rebel Wilson either because of how she is viewed by the world.

Consider how Wilson’s 2020 ‘Year of Health” weight loss affects her personal wellness (likely an improvement), but may impact her career opportunities and probably drastically change them when she’s no longer “Fat Amy” and instead “Fun-Sized Amy.” Sandra knows this game. She was not being prescient when she mused, “A lot of things that I can't get into the room for, even just to be seen, is because they're just saying 'No. they're not casting non-white.' You're lumped into a category with people who are just not white.” She was merely being accurate. Jodie does not get lumped into those categories. Looking the way she does means more that how she acts, which is not shading her skills as much as it is recognizing her baked-in advantages. She’s paid her dues and had her setbacks and disappointments, but it would be silly to ever suggest she’s had as tough a time with a Scouse accent as someone else has with a Korean heritage.

Nothing could be further from the truth to suggest anyone is dumping on J.C. for being young, blonde and pretty or trivializing her life struggles, but her blues ain’t the same as Sandra’s and never will be. Those future movie roles you are hoping for may happen for Sandra. They could happen. They should happen. Will they happen?

No. No, they will not. Talent is not enough because all the talent in the world has ever been enough to make this mean and discriminatory world a meritocracy. Never has in the past and it doesn’t seem about to change anytime soon in the future. Now you know what Sandra already does.

the last film i've seen by nbc was three monkeys i think, i saw it in a cinema, it was extraordinarily depressing.

idk, him, zeki demirkubuz et al. are just dreadful ppl and men it seems like lol. demirkubuz is a better director i think from a purely technical/artistic pov not from like a humanistic perspective and there's always been srs gossip abt how nbc content mined demirkubuz as they were once great friends, up until nbc's alleged theft of demirkubuz’s ideas in one of his movies and now they just allude to and shade each other in their works.

they're both hailed as geniuses tho i should say and like worshipped profusely by the tiny cinema community in tr.

i prefer reha erdem tbh. jin was a great movie. i will be stoned for saying ağır roman but i love that movie for everything that it is (bad and cringe) and sort of try to ignore the super misogynistic writer of the book it was adapted from. yeşim ustaoğlu is good. tolga karaçelik is also good.

☆ I'm going to get so hated on, but "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" qualifies for this. Also "Mortal Instruments" movie, even tho the main cast looks almost nothing like in the books, AT LEAST SIMON ISN'T AS STUPID AS IN THE BOOKS. And there is less romance, which is good.

Weekly recap 4

I missed a week :( It is who I am as a person, tho.

Books: I have read The Health of Nations which is non-fiction about the eradication of epidemics (a focus on smallpox and polio) but also talks about how politics and economics play into it and gives a good overview about the history of vaccines. I thought it was really well done and researched. I am also reading Red Sister, which I am completely loving. Mainly female characters (like 80% 90%?), really well written and the world-building is amazing. Also it has wlw which is such a YAY.

Movies:

The Good Ones: Loving which I thought was really well done and I love this trend of understated romance, like they love each other but that’s not what the movie is trying to highlight, that the loving (elbow elbow) is just a given? I also liked the contrast between classes, between people with university degrees trying to fight for the issues and people that are affected by it. By the end of the movie, there was a very poignant scene where the “educated” people found something an honour that the couple were like no thank you. It was great.

The Shallows: Shark movie! Beautifully filmed, I thought the movie was very to the point; it wanted to say something and it did without messing around. One of the few movies that I was... is she going to make it, tho? Also I wanted to see this movie because 1) Catalan director and 2) I read an article about the actress being very bland in general but doing it quite well in this one (also about how many opportunities she was given to improve). I mean, she was OK but she could have been anyone else.

The Bad ones:

I went to see XXX: The Return of Xander Cage. It wasn’t all bad but it was pretty bad. I liked that the two main female characters actually went the friend route instead of being jealous of each other, and it was a very diverse movie, but Vin Diesel has to realise that he is old and 20 something don’t want to sleep with him.

I watched Fifty Shades of Grey, the first one. I had so low expectations that I found it not disastrously bad. I have no interest in it. I think the premise is faulty and abusive as shit. If I didn’t know anything about the books and the movie was not an adaptation, I would think that it is about two people that have no idea what they are doing and need to stop. And in fact, they do stop. I was like great, this is how it should end, but obviously not. And also it is connected to a book that says romance is textbook abuse and that matters.
