October 8, 2010: NPR Fresh Air revisits a 2000 interview with Jon Wiener about his book Gimme Some Truth: The John Lennon FBI Files [listen] [full transcript]
GROSS: Did you find anything in the FBI files that were released to you that indicated that the FBI went beyond surveillance - that they ever tried to set Lennon up?
Prof. WIENER: You know, there's like a couple of documents. Their concern was that Lennon would participate in some kind of concert, rally, anti-war demonstration outside the Republican National Convention. And there's a memo from J. Edgar Hoover to the head of the Miami FBI office that suggests that if Lennon could be arrested on possession of narcotics charges he would become more immediately deportable. Now this seems to me an effort to set Lennon up for a drug bust. The FBI doesnt enforce possession of narcotics charges, that's a state offense, this is not part of what the FBI is supposed to be doing. I then filed a Freedom of Information request with the Miami FBI office, asking for their files on Lennon, to see what their response to this was. They replied to me that their John Lennon file had been destroyed as a part of a routine file destruction procedure.
GROSS: Hmm.
Prof. WIENER: Now I have to note that - know that Lennon files were collected in five other cities and none of those places destroyed their Lennon file, so we wonder what was in the Miami Lennon file that was destroyed.

The scene where she sees him and just lights up and they stare at each other - aaaaa!
But then she sees YJ and her attention switches and the way his face falls at that. I don't know how a fully adult killer machine manages to look so utterly vulnerable but here we are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oooooof!
Tumblr media
And the way the camera pans to his arm, where his cut definitely reopened after saving YJ!
And then her confrontation where she is upset he's walking away but she can't really process it and picks a fight again, all about how did YJ get wounded and why didn't he help him (and we know he saved that man's life but of course his pride refuses to say) and the thing is - this is the culmination because he is so damn jealous!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way he is so shocked himself by what came out of his mouth. He loses all his cool with her.
Tumblr media
And that is why they are a perfect match, also a nice attempt to distract...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then she notices he's bleeding and freaks. AWWWW
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's so pleased heeeee
Tumblr media
I love it when EA tells him plain text and his whole face transforms. He is so canny and observant in general but with GC he isn't at all because it's too important and so he is afraid to believe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Omg the way she fusses and is all "this is a major wound you must stay here for long" ahahah girl you fancy him so! And he can tell now, EA's comment gave him a push.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course he brings this up, desperate to confirm...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And her nondenial is so obvious...
Tumblr media
That man is bursting with happiness, heeeeee

Just adding to the JKR and gay Dumbledore discussion; another thing to remember is that when JKR began writing the books, Section 28 was still in effect and she likely would have had trouble with putting in nondeniable homosexuality in her books. and yet, as the other anon said, she definitely was laying out the backstory even if she thought she'd never been able to show it beyond coding. In addition, the tabloid reporter who wrote about Dumbledore in the final book, the way she wrote about him, Grindelwald (evil wizard boyfriend), and Harry, it was in the very British way of never saying it outright, but insinuating enough to get the point across while still maintaining plausible deniability to get around British libel laws. To a Briton, it would be far more obvious that the Wizard Tabloid was trying to call Dumbles a flaming q*eer who maybe never should be trusted around young schoolboys (sorry for the language, but that was the sentiment in story). American Tabloids don't have the subtlety, so this might not have pinged anything in American readers. Or came across far more subtly. She also didn't bring up the fact that Dumbledore was gay unprompted for press. She was at a Q&A session in 2007, and a fan asked if Dumbledore ever had any girlfriends or romances [there were a few Dumbledore/McGonagall shippers back then, so the fan may have been trying to ask about that]. She replied, very casually, that well he was gay so no girlfriends but he did have a romance (with Grindelwald). The crowd went bananas, and she seemed surprised, said she would have said something earlier if she thought people cared and would be this happy about it. The scriptwriter for the movies did know, as she once had to tell him to cut a scene where Dumbledore starts talking about a girl he liked in school. She apparently had elaborate backstories for all the main teachers in school, but never found a way to make any of them relevant (aside from Snape's) to the story as it's told from Harry's POV, and most kids don't really give a toss about their teachers personal lives. But she always wrote Dumbledore in a way she thought was coded enough that older readers would pick up on it. But she never tried to toot her own horn, with like LOOK AT MY GAY REPRESENTATION!! LOOK AT HOW BRAVE I WAS! PRAISE ME!!! or anything. She wasn't trying to get praise for gay rep without actually having it be gay, like some people...
I guess now is the time to admit that I assumed the evil boyfriend was Voldemort 💀 I was just like “yeah that makes sense” and I understand if the HP fans want to point and laugh at me
A few people have pointed out the existence of Section 28 in both discussions of HP and GO, and it’s incredibly important context. (Especially when comparing how the two books went about it…one still being respectful to gay fans, and the other being like “okay section 28, you don’t want us promoting homosexuality? We’ll take it a step further and make a joke about burning f slurs, you’re welcome”)
Tbh I’m surprised that the Anti-JKR crowd hasn’t called out the inclusion of that tabloid…it seems like the perfect thing for them to misinterpret and bash her for.
From everything I’m hearing about this, it seems like she’s been very respectful and casual about the whole thing. To me, it seems like she had an idea about her character that she legally couldn’t put into the books, and was honest about it when asked. And she seems to understand that it’s not explicit representation that deserves praise, otherwise when she was accused of being anti-LGBT she’d be all “oh but Dumbledore is gay and he’s amazing representation!”. Meanwhile Neil expects praise for being all “A/C are literally anything you want them to be except gay”
Dumbledore aside, I have a lot of respect for JKR’s support of LGB people from what I’ve seen of her tweets. She’s always one of the first to speak up for lesbians when the TQ+ are being lesbophobic, which I think is really important given her large platform. I have no doubt in my mind that she’s an ally, so it doesn’t surprise me that she handled a gay character so well.
It’s so fascinating that a woman can be this respectful regarding a gay character and receive so much backlash…but a man can be Neil Straightman and have the entire internet kissing his ass. And it’s funny that JKR has lost her belief in gender because of how she’s been treated due to her sex…yet Neil’s sex benefits him so much, which allows him to deny the importance of sex.

At Random
The business of books and the merger that wasn’t
Tumblr media
by Christian Lorentzen
For three weeks, we sat in a windowless room and listened to people talk about books. Most of the time we didn’t know the titles or authors. Instead we heard about money. We heard about advances, royalties, and option clauses. We heard about foreign rights, world rights, e-book rights, and audio rights. We heard about auctions for manuscripts in all their varieties: round-robins, best bids, better/bests. We heard about preempts and bilateral negotiations. We heard about profit and loss projections, marketing budgets, and distribution. We heard about visibility in bookstores and discoverability via algorithms—all the transactions that make reading possible.
We heard that the U.S. market for books had increased by 20 percent in the prior two years: “It was like a hockey stick during COVID. The industry is thriving.” We heard about books as “projects,” meant “to create something that has inherent value for the culture,” or “to become a nondeniable proposition in the mind of the editor,” or “something that’s so exciting, or so important to the political culture, or so moving, that they call me and they say: I have to have this. What do I have to pay for it?” We heard that “there’s a tremendous wealth of intellectual property in books.”
As bad as it would be to see Penguin Random House get even bigger, they had friends at Simon & Schuster and didn’t want to see them lose their jobs. PRH would probably lay off plenty of them anyway, but Wall Street was worse.
We heard that an “unreliable narrator” was “what readers were craving”; that “psychological suspense” is “very big”; that “historical fiction is red hot”; that “sexy vampires” can yield a “franchise author”; that “it’s very hard to make a success out of short stories”; and that it’s “very difficult to create success out of whole cloth just through marketing.” We heard that “social media is having a big impact on the business.” We heard about BookTok influencers. We heard that “you can’t control” TikTok because “it needs to happen on its own, naturally.” We heard that a “celebrity-adjacent author” with a “platform” can be as good, or better, than a genuine celebrity. We heard that publishers give some authors “glam budgets” because “if fans are used to seeing these . . . authors on TV, we need to make sure they look the same in real life,” but that “you don’t ever talk about glam with fiction, really.” We heard that “if you write science fiction, there’s this endless list of sci-fi conventions you can go to. And you get paid to do that.” We heard that “Hollywood buys the rights to all these books, even if they’re not going to make them into a movie. And they pay really well.” We heard that “word of mouth is the most electric, galvanizing aspect of why people read and buy books. So we put it out there, and then whatever happens happens.”

What’s yalls opinion the SiRen response to a rude comment about their pregnancy a month ago ? If memory serves that commentor is extremely persistent and active on fundie social media and I can see how, for them, it can feel like there isn’t a right response, and even not responding can backfire. Do y’all consider the nonconfirming/nondenying responses equal to lying ? What would y’all prefer to see / do in those shoes?

Out of Right Field: Mariners prospect watch provides relief from bad news - Sat, 19 May 2018 PST
Enough with the bad news. It’s been a pretty crummy week to be a Seattle Mariners fan. Rather than dwell on the negative vibes emitting from the Safeco Field clubhouse surrounding the suspension of M’s star Robinson Cano for a PED masking agent – and his halfhearted nondenial denial – let’s instead look ahead at some of the Mariners top prospects in the minor leagues. Asked during a Fox News interview whether he was a Russian agent (as the FBI suspected, according to a blockbuster New York Times story), Trump harrumphed, “I think it’s the most insulting thing I’ve ever been asked. I think it’s the most insulting article I’ve ever had written, and if you read the article you’ll see that they found absolutely nothing.” (Trump gave a more direct denial on Monday.)
...
Like all non-denial denials, both responses were forceful, even emotional in tone. But neither really answered the question.
That’s exactly how a non-denial denial (or NDD, if you will) is supposed to work. It suggests the speaker is responding forthrightly, without really confirming or rejecting the claim.
NDDs aren’t technically lies, but they are evasive and obfuscating. By seeming to dispute a statement without actually doing so, an NDD can raise doubts about the veracity of a damning statement. They have the added benefit of letting the non-denial denier off the hook if and when more facts emerge that confirm the original report. The denier, after all, never actually said the initial report was wrong, so he or she can’t be called on a blatant lie later.

Mother Jones journalist David Corn joked about rape, gave ‘unwelcome shoulder rubs’: Emails
Emails from 2014 and 2015 suggest that a top editor for the progressive magazine Mother Jones sexually assaulted subordinates and made inappropriate comments about their bodies, a report said.
Portfolio manager accused of raping, beating women in penthouse dungeon
A former portfolio manager for an investment fund founded by financier George Soros sexually abused women at a Manhattan penthouse dungeon, according to a $27 million Brooklyn federal suit.
Kevin Spacey chose to engage an old and toxic myth
In response to Rapp’s claims, Spacey released a statement in which he insisted he couldn’t recall the night in question, and then said: “But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.” This is an apology that will make its way into the great hall of historic nondenial denials. But the recourse to blaming Bacchus isn’t even the worst of it.
In his statement, Spacey went on to confirm another rumor: “I choose now to live as a gay man.” Great. Welcome out of the closet, Kevin. But is that 2,000 years of homophobic stereotype I hear in the background?
Brett Ratner Harassment Scandal: Warner Bros. ‘Reviewing’ Allegations
Warner Bros. said it is aware of the sexual harassment allegations against producer and director Brett Ratner and is looking into the situation.
Ratner’s RatPac Entertainment banner has a $450 million film co-financing pact with the studio and rents office space on the lot. The director and producer was accused of sexual harassment or misconduct by six women, including actress Natasha Henstridge, in a report published Wednesday by the Los Angeles Times.
Second Woman Accuses Dustin Hoffman of Sexual Harassment, as Hollywood Scandal Grows
For the second time in as many days, Dustin Hoffman has been accused of sexual harassment by a woman who worked with him in the entertainment industry.
On Thursday, Nov. 2, writer and TV producer Wendy Riss Gatsiounis came forward with allegations that the acclaimed 80-year-old actor made a pass at her when she was pitching a project to his production company in 1991. At the time, she was in her 20s and he was 53.
Jeremy Piven interview pulled from The Late Show amid sexual harassment allegations
Jeremy Piven, who currently stars on CBS’ Wisdom of the Crowd, was supposed to appear on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Friday; however, that’s no longer happening.
EW has confirmed that the network decided to pull a pre-taped interview with the Entourage alum given recent allegations of sexual harassment against him.
38 Women Accuse Director James Toback Of Sexual Misconduct
In a new Los Angeles Times report, 38 women accuse director James Toback of sexual harassment.
The allegations against Toback somewhat resemble those against producer Harvey Weinstein, who was fired from his own company earlier this month after scores of women said the career-making mogul assaulted, harassed or intimidated them. Toback, 72, stands accused of harassing women he employed and women he approached on the street.
Roy Price, Amazon Studios Head, Quits Amid Sexual Harassment Claim
Roy Price resigned as head of Amazon Studios on Tuesday, just days after a producer for one of the company’s hit shows went on the record to say he’d harassed her.
An Amazon Studios spokeswoman confirmed Price’s resignation to HuffPost, but said “there is no statement at this time.”
In a story published last week, Isa Hackett, a producer for “The Man in the High Castle,” told The Hollywood Reporter that Price had repeatedly propositioned her for sex after she’d spent the day promoting the show at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2015.
What did I say just a few days ago?
The Left has engaged in a systematic war on religion–and while the bad parts of religion (such as tribalism and elitism) certainly deserve to be attacked, the aspects which teach “original sin” (that is, when we are all born we are all blank slates unknowing of what it means to be a good person) and how to be a better person (that is, how one can improve oneself morally and ethically) certainly did not deserve to be tossed in the trash heap.
Because without striving to make ourselves better–without the constant individual pursuit towards personal knowledge, self-discovery and self-improvement–what is left? People as cogs in a political machine? Piling up money and political connections? Claiming “#metoo” so you can feel good about your victimhood status and your position on the victimization totem pole?
…[W]ithout such a framework, all that is left is politics: we make moral proclamations not because we have any moral principles, but as a political tool to gin up outrage in order to force political change.
But politics cannot affect morality when political believers do not believe in morality.
All politics can do is rearrange the deck chairs: to give more political power to one group, to take political power away from another group. And worse: politics can only provide the illusion of morality–which is why Harvey Weinstein was able to thrive so long. Because as a major donor to the Democratic Party he had the perfect fig leaf, in the form of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, to pursue his own sexually abusive appetites amongst the glitterati of Hollywood, all of whom knew for decades what sort of a predatory asshole Mr. Weinstein was.
Note that David Corn, Keven Spacey, Dustin Hoffman, and Jeremy Piven [*] are all liberal Democrats.

Thats Fantastic!
The same woman who is so reviled in celebrity circles that last years Roast of Rob Lowe turned into a roast of Coulter . Barris had the same reaction a lot of people would after hearing about the coupling of Coulter and the star of a sitcom considered groundbreaking because of its portrayal of a black family in a pre-Cosby Show era. J.J. dates Ann Coulter! Barris exclaimed. You couldnt write that! Thats fantastic! After reports of the interview began to surface, Coulter clarified things on Twitter. Best of friends, love him, no romance. @mailonline : Anne Coulter is dating star of Good Times Jimmie Walker https://t.co/0Wh6YU6WGM Ann Coulter (@AnnCoulter) April 5, 2017 Coulter has attempted to shut down the same rumors before, such as the time she was asked about her relationship with Walker on HuffPost Live in 2013, after the two were photographed together at an awards show. No, were great friends; we do a lot of stuff together. We are dates, she said in her nondenial denial.
