"RWBY": The Captivating YA Animated Series
Tumblr media
Yang, Penny, Weiss, and Blake at the end of Volume 8
Last year, when looking for another animated series to watch, I came across RWBY, a young adult animation, and one of Rooster Teeth's flagship series. While I wasn't sure about it at first, as I watched all eight seasons, I became invested in the characters, especially the protagonists, and a fan of the show itself.
Reprinted from The Geekiary, History Hermann WordPress blog, and Wayback Machine. This was the fourth article I wrote for The Geekiary. Before this got published, they said I would be kicked off the publication if I don't start writing, if I remember right. So, I started writing this post and many others. This post was originally published on October 8, 2021.
RWBY is the brainchild of the late Monty Oum. It is known for its captivating stories and a theme song, sung by Casey Lee Williams, which begins every episode, foreshadowing what happens in the season/volume. Although the series has the classic conflict of good vs. evil, there are well-developed characters with intricate storylines, elements of horror, and good character development. Some characters are even morally grey, like General James Ironwood or the Ace Ops. Other villains, such as Cinder Fall, don't want to strictly follow their leader.
Tumblr media
Ruby in Volume 9 preview
The anime-inspired series is named after the four main protagonists: Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long. They stand against villains, such as Salem and her enforcers, like Cinder, Arthur Watts, Neopolitan, Tyrian Callows, Mercury Black, and the Grimm monsters. On the other hand, Ozma/Ozpin/Oscar Pine, Lie Ren, Nora Valkyrie, Qrow Branwen, Robyn Hill, and Jaune Arc, among others, help Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang fight against the forces of evil.
The show is clearly mature as it features its share of blood and gore, and the death of some characters, with the antagonist, Salem, even engaging in human experimentation. On the other hand, this science fantasy/adventure/action series has a large focus on magic, and sci-fi elements like the cyborg girl, Penny Polendina, and scrolls which can receive and record messages. Each of the protagonists, like those on RWBY, have a semblance which derives from their aura, helping them battle against the Grimm and other villains, either including powers such as object manipulation, disorienting people, or super strength.
I don't want to give away too much of the plot but I will say that the show features various supporting LGBTQ characters. In Volume 6, Saphron and Terra-Arc, a lesbian couple with a son named Adrian, as confirmed by Lindsay Jones, the voice of Ruby, who the protagonists, and their friends, stay with on their journey to another kingdom. Additionally, in the Volume 5 episode "Alone Together," Ilia Amitola confessed her romantic feelings to Blake, and was later confirmed by show writer Miles Luna as a lesbian in a Reddit AMA.
Most prominently is May Marigold, a trans woman. Unlike other trans characters in animation, she is voiced by a trans female voice actress, Kdin Jenzen, and her character came out as trans in the Volume 8 episode "War," which she described as "something so wildly powerful & meaningful."
Tumblr media
LGBTQ characters in RWBY so far
There is a lot about the series which is wonderful. There is a strong possibility of confirmed LGBTQ representation in the main cast, especially since the voice actress for Blake, Arryn Zech, confirmed her character as bisexual in May 2020, and some even have argued that the shipping between Blake and Yang, known as Bumbleby, will come become canon in the show's next volume.
Even if this doesn't happen, the show is still powerful, from its music to the characters, the voice acting to the visuals, which have improved from the earliest seasons to the present-day. Although the fandom may be toxic at times, the show is unique in its colorful ship names, especially the femslash ones, like Baked Alaska (Yang and Neopolitan), Blood Mint (Ruby and Emerald Sustrai), Freezerburn (Yang and Weiss), Ladybug (Ruby and Blake), or White Rose (Ruby and Weiss) to name a few.
So, if you haven't seen RWBY yet, whether on VRV, Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime (in some locations), YouTube Movies (for purchase/rent), or on the RoosterTeeth website, now is the perfect time during the show's hiatus, before Volume 9 begins again sometime in 2022.

Silence is Silver first things first
Then I let you meet who is my SS Her name is Nora (like default yeah) and the game which my work is based on is a Survival no mod She doesn't have a patronym... because eh! But Nick nickname her Silver because she have white hair and didn't give her name before a long time
If I had to describe her in a few lines: she is silent… it even tends to destabilize Nick, her favorite companion She is silent but over the story we discover it's because she manages very badly her emotions and the shock of what she experienced
Probably her grandpa once told her; when you have nothing good to say, say nothing
She listened to him perfectly…
She evolve in my story by discovering a deep attachment to Nick, sometimes confusing, but they will simply be good friends until the end, and basically, in this story there will be no romance
Hence the why of this blog, among other things, because sometimes I have romances ideas (or other funny situations) and I can’t integrate them into the story, but not just for that
Anyway, Silver also has three big problems:
The first is she completely abuse (but according to her, she have motivations) use of drugs. We agree it bothers Nick, but it also causes many other situations
The second is she has a strong penchant for blind obedience, sometimes even ignoring morality (and again, Nick is baffled by this)
The third was an explosive character, which to be often silent and not really fall into verbal violence, can be very expeditious in terms of actions
So, this is my Silver I let you discover by some adventures or other tickets I hope will make you laugh
Because that’s the bottom line

( nora, 25, gmt, she/her )
CLICK ANYWHERE ON THIS SENTENCE FOR SEXII GOOGLE DOC!!
bullet point summary of margo.
—   born margaret but NOBODY calls her that. its colby, coach or margo, and go to the privileged few. margo grew up in the creek commune n then dropped out of school cos of a teenage pregnancy so she was a bit of a cautionary tale back in’t’day (said tht in my yorkshire accent). she now works for summer camps coaching pee wee soccer and pee wee cheer, as well as helping out her beekeeper dad on his honey farm, which is jst north of abernathy creek, and working at scuba on the off seasons.
—  its just her and her dad, and has been for as long as she can recall !! everything she knows about her mum could fit on the back of the weathered passport photo she keeps in her wallet of a stranger who shares her face - her name’s melody, or at least tht was name she used when working as a dancer, she’s from argentina and dropped mag’s dad as soon as someone w more money came along.
—  margo’s father is a beekeeper with his own organic honey company. margo and her dad moved to irving in the early 00s, the summer between grade school and middle school, because her dad had heard about the communal living in abernathy creek and wanted to lend his skills there and live off the fatta the land in a very lenny from of mice and men kinda way.
—  for a few years of middle school margo was bullied for living with the ‘freaks from the creek’, but when they realised how chill her dad was with underage drinking, margo ‘keg-bringer’ colby soon gained popularity among the more renegade students. every so often, the high school parties would happen at her end of town, occasionally with members of the commune even offering the high schoolers a spiritual experience they’d never forget (often in the form of mushrooms) which meant people tried to stay on her good side. to get an invite to a margo colby party handed you a free pass to make up the most ridiculous shit about the commune you liked and nobody else could say anything, because they’d never been to the creek.
—  at school, margo had a lot of ‘behvioural issues’ bcos of undiagnosed adhd, she found it difficult to sit still for hours n write down huge chunks of information n her restlessness was seen as laziness. she was encouraged to do sports, as were most of the kids who weren’t that academically inclined, but she turned out to be pretty hot shit at sprinting, because she grew up surrounded by bee houses and he who runs slowest gets stung, baybeyy!! so yea, in school sports became her LIFE. she was gonna get a sports scholarship to college but ended up dropping out of school in senior year n becoming one of those kids who could have had it all but lost it.
—  she had sex with sutter at a house party when she wasnt really ready because it felt like the right thing to do at the time and everybody else was doing it. she’d attended health class, she’d seen the corny videos. she knew about all the statistics, but she also knew that it had never happened to anyone she knew and the pull out method was basically safer than the morning after pill and way less expensive.
—  a teenage pregnancy knocked her out of the runnings for prom queen and meant she had to leave school early. she didn’t go to college when her friends did, instead she spent the time interviewing potential foster candidates and eating her weight in lindt chocolate while marathoning love island in her room.
—  she had a son, who she passed off to someone else a couple of towns away.  it was a closed adoption which seemed like the best idea at the time, but she now wishes she had access to his life.
—  after peaking in high school and jumping between jobs for a few years, she got a more permanent role at scuba which she loves with all of her heart and soul, but unfortunately a bar job doesn’t pay the rent.
—  she works at summer camps coaching  junior soccer and netball on the side. she’s extremely competitive and takes it very personally if her team lose. the kids all call her, coach colby n write her longwinded letters about how they’ll never forget this summer camp before they go back to their suburban picket fence houses n she keeps all the letters in a drawer n takes them out to read when she’s feelin depressed.
—  enjoys surfing and worked for a number of years on resorts like mila kunis’ job in forgetting sarah marshall. she went on to work 18-hour days as a stewardess on luxury yachts which is a part of her backstory i added after watching season one of below deck because i guess i really am that fucking impressionable. met most of her surf friends doing tht but said she’d never in her life do it again bcos it was mostly just picking up after rich white ppl for shit pay. she came back to irving n thats when she started doing the summer camp jobs so she could move out of the creek n get her own apartment.
—  she never actually finished senior year so she’s currently going to night school at the community college to get through her exams and is trying to save to go to college or open university. she wants to major in criminology. she’s super ambitious but also super adhd so she fluctuates between thinking she can achieve anything to just feeling like a failure n thinkin whats the point
—  used to shoplift to feel joy and as an act of resistance to her hippy commune routes, but now sees herself as a reformed, bin-diving freegan (sims 4 eco living can i get a hell yaaaa). also she thinks it’s totally wrong to steal when you have enough money and clearly don’t need to steal to survive, ppl risk imprisonment for basic necessities, so for her to do it for a brief thrill and some new shades felt a bit derogatory
—  was raised jewish. became a vegetarian as a child because it seemed, at the time, easier than having to explain which foods she was and wasn’t allowed to eat together, so she just cut out meat entirely. still a vegetarian now and dabbles in veganism, although its become less about not eating certain meats in the milk of their mother and more about her global impact / carbon footprint
—  nurses little animals to health in her garden. has a hedgehog name OJ short for orange juice not the other one filthy pig. her and her dad have always been huge animal rights activists and existed on a vegetarian diet. the only one in their house who isn’t vegetarian is their cat, auggie. (short 4 augustus gloop)
—  has a lot of stupid ass stick and poke tattoos. there was a phase during her years as a barmaid where she wanted to train as a tattoo artist n would mostly practice on herself or any friends who would let her
—  she doesn’t form many long lasting friendships cos she tends to be super excited when she makes a new friend and just see them all the time but then it wears off and she can ghost a bit. she’ll always coming pinging back but she’s not the most predictable or loyal friend, sometimes she’ll sleep in your house every night for a week and then you won’t even get a text from her for a month. her best friends are elderly neighbours and houseless people she meets when volunteering at the foodbank. she thinks they’re more authentic than most of the ‘fake posers’ she meets down the vela pier
—  calls herself a butch lesbian but still has sex with men when she wants validation. sexually attracted to some men, especially effeminate men, but only romantically attracted to women. very possessive of the gals in her life.
—  stopped giving a shit about getting older or adhering to anyone elses bullshit standards, realised it was all fake p much as soon as she dropped out of school and one by one her friends just stopped texting her
—  lives in one of the lofts in port apartments. it’s open plan with rugs and lava lamps everywhere. she has a palette bed. its all very ‘sustainable chic’. like, oh wow, a pallet bed that im supposed to think you made from scratch but i KNOW you got it  off ebay because you thought it looked trendy
—  constantly says shes poor but still buys clothes from urban outfitters. sus.
—  frequently found at fannies flirting with the cute bisexual bartender with a choppy black bob.

orange peel, the smell of bleach, skeleton drawings in the margins of a journal, thumb holes poked through the cuffs of your sleeves, bleach white sneakers pounding on a gymnasium floor, setting dumpsters on fire for the hell of it. a hit flask of vodka decorated with hello kitty stickers, split knuckles, alien conspiracy theories and sci-fi paperbacks, doc martens with fraying laces, a child in an oversize bee keepers suit, scabbed knees, not eating your greens, smiling with a mouthful of blood, and piercing your own ears with a safety pin when your dad wouldn’t take you,  a tennis racket you punched through in a fit of temper, feet pounding the earth until your soles bleed crimson, sleeping in a cherry lip balm and scrunchies to keep the wild locks from your eyes.
hoo boy this is getting LONG AS FUCK but here are my wanted plots
wanted plots
ok margo’s been in irving since she was like 10. she’s quite a vivacious person?? she dresses completely instinctively without any sense of cohesion so she stands out. a guy once told her she was wearing the ugliest outfit he’d ever seen and he thought that was so cool and brave of her. but anyway where was i going.. she grew up in the abernathy creek so stuck out like a sore thumb,,,, maybe ppl who were super interested in the creek or maybe poked fun at her bcos of it idk.....
b4 she dropped out, margo used 2 b in with the cool kids at school bcos her dad would buy them booze and rarely ask for the money. maybe a fun plot cld b with some of the ‘it girls’ she used to hang around with b4 she got pregnant n dropped out and they all went off to college n stopped texting her.
frinds !! unlikely friends !! toxic friends !! some1 she feels like she knew before irving ???
since margo literally can’t differentiate between romantic and platonic love, she’s got off with so many of her mates, so i want awkward friendships where they nearly dated, or exes that have now just turned into weird friendships. fwbs. enemies with benefits. all the angst. all the slow burn mutual pining we hate each other narratives
locals who play sports. margo wld be all over community soccer n take it way too seriously. maybe ppl she plays hockey with. girls who she’s like, weirdly intimate with but its not a thing cos the other girls straight !!! what do u mean !! aha just fun !
she works part time at scuba. i want a mate that just goes and sits in there talking to her until her manager gets angry.
she's also a surf instructor and occasionally works as a lifeguard!! gal has like 7 jobs ik but regular swimmers hmu
ppl she coaches at the gym !! she wants to be a personal trainer
i reckon she might have recently started meditating to try and calm down her mind cos its always bustling with thoughts, n i think she’s p interested in buddhism so if anyone’s a buddhist hmu
someone she’s trying to make a zine with on female empowerment and women in film and art, etc. just a very feminist zine.
TLDR:  angry sports gay, former high school track prodigy turned drop out, who likes feminist literature, wearing leather jackets over slip dresses, and smudged red lipstick.
this was so long !!! im sorry !! if you’ve read this far have a biscuit, love x

When Will My Life Begin? (Fair Game, 15/?)
Summary: Tangled AU. Clover Callows has been confined to a tower for all of his life, and given the threat that his Uncle Tyrian says his semblance poses to his safety, he accepts that fate. It’s the only life he’s ever known, after all. But when he’s offered the opportunity to fulfill his greatest dream after a chance encounter with a thief -- or bandit, as Qrow Branwen insists there’s a difference between the two -- both Clover and Qrow will discover joys that they never knew life could offer them before.

Clover took pride in the fact that in the three hours since he left his tower, he’d proven himself to be rather brave. He actually left the tower itself by freefalling from the top by Kingfisher’s line, let himself trust another person to guide him to the lanterns, and even confronted that same person over their roguish past.
It couldn’t be said that Clover didn’t have good reason to be impressed with himself.
However, as he stood in Lil’ Miss Malachite’s, watching his guide get trapped in place by the rowdiest people Clover had ever seen in his life, he imagined he could be forgiven for forgetting all that bravery he’d built up.
Everything was so dark, and everyone was so loud, their voices only slightly blurred by the sound of Clover’s heart all but pounding ceaselessly right in his ears with the force of a falling dictionary.
Damn it, Qrow!
What was he thinking, taking them to this place?
Clover imagined Qrow probably thought he could get him to back out of their deal and give him his satchel back by showing him the exact types of people he confessed to fearing most. Well, the joke was on him, because as soon as Clover picked up on that notion, he made it clear to Qrow that he had another thing coming!
But then Qrow brought up a frustratingly good point -- there were sure to be a lot of other people in the capital that acted like these miscreants did. If he couldn’t handle them here in a small little tavern, what would he do then when he was in the larger town?
It was an admittedly good question, one Clover couldn’t really think about before Qrow was captured and Clover was left to fend for himself.
Either way though, one thing was for certain -- Qrow was a jerk.
However, he was also a jerk who knew his way to the lanterns. Clover knew he meant what he told Qrow: He wasn’t going home without seeing them, no matter what.
Besides, though Qrow was a jerk and a thief -- or rather, a bandit, as he claimed -- the sight before him didn’t feel right.
Clover had overpowered Qrow plenty of times today, both physically through his capture and mentally through his hidden satchel and deduction skills. However, for as many times as he defeated Qrow in just that short window of time, Qrow had never made an expression that was anything like what he currently sported.
As Qrow tried to wrestle out of the tight hold imposed on him, there was a helplessness in his eyes, a lack of hope that complemented the sparks of fear that overran his face. It was nothing like the Qrow he’d spent the past few hours with -- instead, one filled with panic that felt cruelly unnatural.
Even outside of his desire to see the lanterns, Clover couldn’t let whatever was causing an expression like that go on.
No, he had to do something.
Raven seemed to have an idea, signaling her view on what they should do by giving Clover’s collar a loose tug towards the door that led out of the tavern.
To that, Clover shot her a deadpan look.
Honestly…
“We’re not leaving him here, Raven,” Clover stated, his tone frank and definite.
Birds couldn’t roll their eyes, but Raven all the same communicated the sensation without even doing it just before letting go of Clover’s collar.
Clover looked at the sight before him.
People were surrounding the kerfuffle being created by Qrow and his captors. Among the many others in attendance, the group that approached Clover when he first entered the tavern were there.
However, while they were absolutely interested in seeing what was going down, they didn’t seem that excited, or even happy about it.
It made them seem so tired, so resigned, so different than what they were like when he first met them.
In fact, looking around the room, Clover could see that no one really appeared in favor of what was happening, not even the woman -- Robyn, he believed her name was -- who led the group who captured Qrow, nor anyone in that group itself.
Weren’t they at least going to get a reward for this, judging by what their boss said? Shouldn’t that have made them just a little more sold on the task at hand?
Clover had to admit, the attitudes towards such an order even in the face of payment seemed a far cry than what Uncle Tyrian had taught him to expect from situations like these.
Then again, Qrow didn’t have a lucky semblance. He supposed there was more empathy his fellow humans were willing to give those who didn’t have so tantalizing a prize within them.
However, as resigned as he was to think about how he was just an exception to this new revelation, Clover had a thought that he chose to focus on instead: Maybe, he could use the reluctance of those around him to get himself and Qrow out of this mess.
It wasn’t going to be easy, and he had no idea how he was going to pull it off, but he also knew he was going to try anyways.
Looking ahead, Clover surveyed his options for those to recruit for help. He couldn’t tell anything about most of the tavern’s other patrons, but some stood out, namely the group he and Qrow ran into when they first came into the place.
Well, they did want to talk to him…
They looked calmer than they did initially now, but all the same, Clover had only talked to Qrow and Raven since he’d left the tower. Raven was his friend and in addition to the advantages and leverage he held over the latter, Qrow proved quickly to not be dangerous -- a jerk, yes, but not a dangerous one. These guys were going to be different. Not only did he not know them -- and what he did know of them was...a lot to handle, but he was in their territory, and there were four of them against himself and Raven.
Clover gave a glance Qrow’s way -- reminding himself of both his moral and selfish obligation to end this -- and made his way over to the group.
With their attention towards Qrow and his captors, the group paid Clover no mind as he approached. That worked out well enough for Clover, who was still trying to figure out just how to initiate this conversation.
Everything that came to mind sounded so stupid. Why would they help him of all people? On top of barely talking to him, he was just some random guy who ran away from them -- he wasn’t sure he’d be so inclined to help himself either after that. And it’s not like he had anything to offer them for their help apart from maybe a good recipe for bread rolls.
He couldn’t do this. Qrow was going to go to jail, and he was going to lose out on his dream forever.
Could he even navigate himself home from here? It wasn’t like anyone could help him, and sure, he put a few landmarks to memory, but that was only going to get him so far.
Uncle Tyrian was right. He never had a chance of surviving outside of the tower on his own.
So much for his bravery…
Suddenly, someone moving from across the bar accidentally pushed Clover to the side, inadvertently knocking him right into one of the group member’s backs. Clover backed away quickly, but the damage had already been done.
Upon being hit, the group member jumped in place, letting out a shapeless exclamation before slowly turning around.
It was the girl from earlier...the especially loud one…
Clover was pretty sure her name was Nora.
“Ooh!” she said upon recognizing him. “Look, guys! It’s that weird stranger from earlier!”
Immediately, the rest of her friends’ turned around to face him.
Clover knew having the group’s eyes on him was something he should have expected if he wanted to enlist their help, but it didn’t make the actuality of it happening any less scary than it was.
Gods, what he would give for some water right now.
Looks like whether he wanted it or not, that very bravery Clover was about to abandon was going to be thrust upon him.
Lucky him...
“Hi,” Clover squeaked.
He waited for a second, hoping one of them was going to say something.
None of them said anything.
Where were the chatterboxes he’d encountered when he first came in here?
Damn it.
“Look, I need your help,” he said, suddenly finding himself able to speak quite a lot, probably as compensation for how quiet they were. “My name is Clover and that guy they have bound up is my guide and I know he’s a thief or a bandit or whatever and it’s going to be really, really hard to save him with all those people in the way trying to get that reward, but I need him to take me to see the lanterns tomorrow because I’ve been dreaming about them my whole life and this is going to be the one chance I’ll ever have to see them up close and in person. I don’t know if you’ve ever had a dream like that, but this one means everything to me, so will you please help me?” Upon finishing, Clover took a deep breath. He was pretty sure he’d picked up the speed speaking, but he got the sense that he got a lot faster than even he thought he did.
Well, at least he didn’t mumble…
Uncle Tyrian could at least be proud of him for that...once he got over every other rule Clover broke today.
For a moment, none of the four of them said anything.
Clover bit his lip. Had he said too much? Did they, in fact, ever have dreams like that? Were dreams even valued by those outside the tower, or was Clover an anomaly in that regard, only admiring them because they were some of the very few things he had to get himself through the lull of repetitive days and years?
The group’s other girl -- Pyrrha, if Clover recalled correctly -- let out a somewhat despondent sigh.
“We know about dreams,” she said. “We’ve been fighting for ours for years now.”
“But to no luck,” one of the boys -- Ren, Clover was pretty sure -- added.
“W-what’s your dream?” The question left Clover’s mouth before he could even think about it, but he dared not take it back, somewhat because he still didn’t know what to make of this group, but mostly because that question allowed him to pursue an opportunity to experience something that didn’t come by his way that often -- someone else talking about their dreams.
Uncle Tyrian had talked about his dreams a bit -- for Clover to remain safe and happy in the tower for all of his days while he took care of him or for a world that didn’t care about semblances -- but it was always so vague and in the former case, it was a dream that they were actually living.
But to hear someone else, and not just one other but four others talk about their unfulfilled dreams was something Clover never knew he wanted until it was something he had the chance to hear for himself.
“We want to defend Remnant from evil!” Nora called out, raising a large hammer in her hand. Quickly, Clover backed away, intimidated by its size.
Uncle Tyrain wasn’t wrong when he spoke of the weapons of those outside the tower. The hammer that Nora held in her hands could probably separate a man’s head from his shoulders, and Clover needed both of those things intact.
However, while Nora raised her hammer, she didn’t attempt to hurt Clover, nor anyone else with it. She was just kind of showing it off before settling its head back on the ground a few moments later and balancing her hands on the base of the handle. Clover had to admit that once his shock had worn off, she looked like a hero from a book yielding such a behemoth. The other’s weapons, still in their sheaths, looked great as well.
Fighting evil, huh?
“That sounds amazing,” Clover said, unable and unwilling to prevent the smile on his face from growing.
“But the only problem is that the royal guard doesn’t consider us ‘couth’ or ‘soldierly’ enough to fight alongside them,” the final member of the group, Jaune, sadly interjected.
“Even though we’ve got the fighting chops,” Nora countered.
“And the desire to help,” Pyrrha added.
In all fairness to their group, the royal guard -- whoever they were -- weren’t entirely wrong. This team that he’d seen in just those short moments they’d interacted with was unabashedly loud, eccentric, and definitely didn’t look all that interested in following rules. No, they just looked like they wanted to do good for the world as they saw fit.
Clover admired that, and right now, that kind of attitude he needed in abundance to fulfill his dreams.
Perhaps it was the attitude that best suited them towards their own dreams, as well.
“Well,” Clover said, “can’t you just fight without them?”
“Fight without the royal guard?” Jaune repeated.
“No one’s fought outside the purview of the general before,” Ren said.
Clover shrugged. “Is there any reason why you can’t be the first? You already have a team, you said yourselves that you’re willing to face evil, and if you’re as good as you say you are -- and with weapons like that, I’d bet you are -- then there’s no reason you shouldn’t be allowed to be heroes of Remnant in your own right! And if the royal guard doesn’t want you, well, then that’s their loss, right?”
Jaune released a hum, followed by Pyrrha, followed by Nora, followed by Ren.
In front of Clover, the group exchanged looks with each other, their frowns slowly rising until they became smiles.
“He’s right, you know,” Pyrrha said, waving an agreeing hand .
“There’s nothing illegal about it, after all,” Ren supplemented.
“General Ironwood’s not going to be happy about it,” Jaune said, all the while sporting a smirk that all but shouted how little he cared about that.
“Well,” Nora replied, shooting her friend a knowing smirk, “then he needs to write some better laws in the future because the Juniper Jaggers aren’t about to let anyone tell them ‘no’ so easily anymore!”
Jaune, Pyrrha, and Ren gave a holler, and even though he didn’t join in, Clover could feel his cheeks pinch from how big he was grinning.
Everyone then turned to Clover, and this time, he didn’t feel intimidated by the action.
“So,” Nora continued. “How about in return for reviving our dream, we make our first mission helping you save yours?”
Clover smirked. “To that, I’d say, ‘what do you have in mind?’”
Nora signaled for Clover and her teammates to look at Lil’ Miss Malachite, who was presently looking at Qrow with a greedy, sinister gaze.
“Robyn and her team aren’t bad, they’re just following their boss’ orders, but without her, they’ll change their tune quickly enough,” Nora said. “If we can get her away from them and Qrow, then we can unleash our secret weapon and get him free.”
“Secret weapon?” Clover asked.
In truth, he was eager to hear about how the Juniper Jaggers would fight them off.
Did they have a team attack? Did they have an ancient trinket or a powerful weapon to exchange for Qrow’s freedom?
“Yup. You.”
Clover blinked.
There is no way he heard that correctly.
“I’m sorry. What?” Clover questioned, begging to the Gods and his semblance alike that he misheard what she’d said.
“You were able to convince us to help you,” Jaune said. “No reason why you can’t do it with everyone else.”
That begging apparently went unheard.
Stupid semblance.
Stammering, Clover tried to come up with an objection.
“I-I can’t-”
“Sure you can!” Pyrrha said, waving a dismissive hand. “Just talk to them! They’re more receptive and kinder than they look.”
“But you guys know them be-”
“They’re not going to listen to us,” Ren said, interrupting him, though blushing immediately afterwards while whispering an apology.
“For some reason, they think we’re annoying, so they just drown out whatever we say,” Jaune explained.
“But you’re new and interesting!” Nora countered.
“And you haven’t worn people out yet,” Ren added.
“Not to mention, you’re kind of good looking with those muscles of yours,” Jaune admitted.
“And you’ve got a good heart,” Pyrrha finished off.
“Guys,” Clover protested. “I could barely talk to you. I almost wasn’t going to until I got pushed into Nora.”
“But even though you were scared, you did,” Ren pointed out.
“You’re braver than you think you are,” Pyrrha promised.
“And you’ve got what it takes to fulfill your dream,” Jaune said.
“So what do you say?” Nora asked.
Well, it was either do this or lose his dream.
There wasn’t much of a choice to be made, and just like the Juniper Jaggers, Clover wasn’t about to let the world tell him ‘no’ so easily anymore.
His resolve didn’t make the deep breath he took any less shaky, but he nodded all the same.
“Let’s do this,” Clover said, however uneasily.
The team nodded at him before bringing him in close and telling him how they’d distract Lil’ Miss Malachite, as well as how much time they theorized Clover had to work with before the guards arrived.
It was going to be hard -- Clover would dare say impossible.
But he had already done a few things today he never thought would be possible for him. What was one more?
In any event, for whatever bravery Clover either had prior to or garnered today, he knew now that it was about to be put to the ultimate test.

Emma’s 2020 Questionnaire!
Your Name: Emma Characters: Phineas Flynn, Tiana Truitt, Aquata Triton, Henry Charming, Evelyn Deavor Pick one of your characters and talk about their growth (we recommend choosing an older character, but it’s up to you!) What about their story has surprised you? What are you proud of? How have they changed from their original inception to now? I’m going to talk about Phineas because I’ve had him for the longest and I think he’s the one I’ve been able to spend the most time developing. So basically something I struggled with when I first picked up Phineas was how he deals with people he doesn’t like, because in the show I don’t think he really dislikes anyone. And I feel like this drama with Tony recently has finally helped me crack what Phineas’s deal is when it comes to conflict-- he doesn’t really feel down about it unless he feels like his character is being questioned, and that’s why with Wilbur he’s mostly like whatever while with Tony and Lock (in the past) Phineas has gotten petty and vindictive-- he doesn’t like the role he’s found himself in and he takes that personally if that makes sense. (Also Phineas just way prioritizes his job with Cornelius over getting back at Wilbur, even if he’ll make the occasional jab at Wilbur in Among Us or on Twitter). So that’s been really cool to explore. And I think he’s also gotten a little less finance-bro-y than I originally intended, but I think that side of him will definitely come out once he graduates and goes to uni. I think the thing I’m most proud of with him is kind of maintaining that balance between being totally likeable and fun while also pretty infuriating and obtuse, like he’s a sweet and well-meaning person who’s also really annoying and idk I think I do that balance well.
Pick another character (or the same character if you only have one) and talk a little about where you WANT them to go. What are your plans for them going into the new year? I’m really excited to see where Tiana goes! Ever since I picked her up, I’ve been focused on this goal of getting the restaurant to happen and now that I’ve done that, there are a lot of possibilities. I want to see Tiana burn out from the stress a little bit-- maybe take on more than she can handle because a big part of her arc has been learning to accept help and collaborate with people, and I got to do that a lot with planning Tiana’s Place, but I would also really like to see that continue because those tendencies don’t really go away. I also want LOVE for Tiana even though I keep saying she doesn’t have time for it-- I want her to get a stupid crush that distracts her from work lol I think it could be really fun. And I’m also really excited to keep developing all her friendships, I love all of her Swynlake native connections and PRINCESS HOUSE and other small business owners and now that she really feels like she has put down roots with her restaurant, I want to see her branching out more.
Pick a thread or a plot that you’re proud of and talk about why you loved it. In terms of your own writing, identify 1-3 strengths and talk about why you think it’s one of your strengths. Ok sorry to keep talking about Tiana I promise I have other characters but I’m really proud of all of the different characters I incorporated into the Tiana’s Place opening. My goal was to make a real community effort to show that, no matter how much she wanted to do it on her own, she still has a whole group of people supporting her and who have a stake in it-- from Nuka and Ratigan in the beginning with the financial stuff to Clara and Toulouse and Laszlo with the music/art to Jun and Al for business advice to all the people who donated to the raffle. And the raffle was so fun and I hope people use that for plots!!
I also gotta shout out one more: writing the pirates AU Phineas and Ferb stuff was so much fun and really pushed me as a writer I think. I was a little uneasy going into pirates because action/movement/fights are not my strong suit and I knew there would be a lot of that. But the generated stuff was really helpful in kickstarting some ideas and Sid was so great to work with on that. I thought we got really creative and personally I had so much fun and I hope other people did too.
In terms of strengths for my writing-- I think I’m good with flaws? Like even characters who are really sweet and nice (I’m looking at you Henry) I think I try to show the different sides of them and explore how you can be both really well-meaning and really misguided at the same time. And I think that’s good because it has the potential to cause conflict and drive forward more plots where there’s no clear ~bad guy~ just flawed people trying their best and that’s the most interesting stuff to me. Of course I also love big bads! I think macro plots are really important. I think my niche though is those petty little conflicts and I think I do a good job with them.
I’m adding another too because you know what why not. I think I've gotten pretty creative recently?? Like I’ve done some really weird fun stuff this year-- Henry and Jake’s acapella audition is up there as one of my favorite threads, and I’m really excited about Tiana and Aurora’s fake date and Greg and Q doing Santa’s Workshop and I think Henry’s first open was one of my favorite opens I’ve done. Idk I think one of my insecurities about RP has always been that I worry I don’t bring enough ideas to the table with plotting and I think I’m getting better at letting my brain dream up weird cool stuff.
In terms of your own writing, identify 1-3 areas of improvement.
Like I said, plotting is still something I struggle with-- I spent the majority of my early RP experience in a very gif-chat-heavy open-heavy fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants rp, so coming to BDRP even back during round 1 in 2017, plotting was a big surprise to me. And this is also something that I struggle with in my non-RP writing-- story arc and structure is something I have always wanted to improve. But I think I’m getting better at fleshing out ideas and not putting too much pressure on myself. And I think I’m also getting better at stepping out of my comfort zone and messaging people I don’t write with as often which is important because literally everyone here is so fun and talented! So I want to keep doing that. I know I can be a little shy sometimes (this sounds SO weird I never shut up lol but it’s how I feel) and I don’t want that to hold me back
In terms of actual writing stuff, I’d like to expand my vocabulary a bit more? I think I use certain words and phrasing so often that it annoys me and maybe it annoys no one else and my writing will be worse if I try to throw in unnecessary words but yeah. I think reading more will help with that. And in general I just really want to get better at thinking stuff through and building story arcs.
Pick one of your plots, or even just a character, and come up with a list of 3-5 “mentor texts” where you can look for inspiration or research, then write a short (2-4 sentences) why you picked those texts. (They don’t have to be books, either!)
Ev is the one I feel like I need to do the most development on so here goes!
1. Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, specifically the character Nora
Messy nerd girls! Messy nerd girls! Please recommend me more things with messy nerd girls! Nora is basically Ev’s exterior, the person people know her as. She’s chaotic and fun and relatable, and also kind of a genius.
2. Macbeth, specifically the character Lady Macbeth
This is one I wanna dive into! I’ve seen a heavily abridged version of Macbeth and that’s about it but I have a copy sitting on my desk. I love a villain who likes to stay behind the scenes and pull the strings, and while Ev is in this for “moral reasons” (lol) she’s also in this for #power. I’m not used to playing manipulative villains-- I’m usually more of a henchperson type deal, so the ultimate 4-D chess gal would be some good inspo.
3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, specifically Professor Quirrell.
Ok I am really sorry to bring Harry Potter into this but I think something that’s important about Ev is that one of the things distracting from her villainy is her vague air of incompetency. We know she’s very smart and she has the whole nutty-professor thing going, but she’s kind of a mess and I want characters to underestimate her. I think Quirrell’s vibe of being nervous about everything is similar to Ev’s messy exterior and I would love a good end-of-the-book villain reveal.  And now, a wishlist! Jot down a few themes or stories or genres etc that you want to maybe pursue in the upcoming year! (i.e. a good ol’ fashion forbidden romance, maybe you want to dig deep into racial identity etc) This doesn’t have to necessarily be attached to any characters or stories you have now– it’s just meant to help you see for yourself what kind of stories call to your heart.
Oooh so many things. Generally more romance-- I always hesitate a little with shipping IDK WHY maybe it’s insecurity about jumping into what always feels like a bit plot to me lol. But I wanna take that plunge more-- especially with Tiana! But I’m pretty much open to stuff with anyone, especially really silly rom-com type stuff. I also think that my shipping niche is super complicated stuff with villains (the irony and craziness of the Henleigh situation is so FASCINATING and FUN and I want MORE OF THAT) so just saying a I’m-flirting-with-you-because-you’re-a-good-ally-to-have-on-my-side-oh-no-I’m-actually-falling-for-you thing with Ev could be really fun (LISTEN her entire tag is just shipping content. I scroll through so much of it so of course it gave me some ideas)
I’m also REALLY jazzed about the uni stuff going on right now. Like I’ve said before, I think college is a really interesting place and so much weird shit happens there because you have all these 18-22 year olds living in close quarters and they come up with weird ways to entertain themselves. The secret santa/RA stuff has me loling every day and I just love stuff like that. Like, I’d love to have shenanigans like people sneaking into dorms and staying up until 3 am in the library and all that stuff. I just love that stuff.
Also I am really trying to do big bad stuff with Ev!! As I have mentioned... plotting and story arcs are a major thing I’m trying to work on, so it’s a lot to think about, but I would really just love to do all kinds of things-- I’d love to have her enable small-time villains, or manipulate people who are easily swayed, or to trick people. It’s a new area for me, but it’s something I’m excited about and I want to challenge myself.
OPTIONAL: Why do you RP?
Because I literally can’t stop apparently lol. No but the thing I love about RP is getting to collaborate on a story and getting surprised by people, getting to geek out about something that I can also participate in, and having NO RULES. I think there’s something really special about having an interest that I can’t monetize or market, that I can do for pure fun out of my love of creating and writing. And I love having a community of people on the ride with me. It’s so much fun and I’m so grateful for you guys!
I always end with a gif so here’s my favorite gif it legit makes me laugh out loud

Top Five Failed Attempts By WWE to Create the Next Trish Stratus.
Tumblr media
Trish Stratus, even at her peak, was never something out of All Japan Women, circa 1994. She was a decent worker, although Victoria (now Tara in TNA) and Molly "Nora Greenwald" Holly (two performers she often  feuded with in 2002-2004) were superior to her in the in-ring department. She was over, but never had the connection with fans that, say, Sunny or Lita did in their primes (indeed, after Trish’s brief in-ring return this year, she just disappeared. Fans didn’t seem to notice or care.)   She was never a huge ratings draw like Sable (who in 1999, believe it or not, was actually pulling in bigger ratings than Steve Austin.) In short, Trish was a decent all-rounder, but never excelled in any area (although her heel promos were occasionally very good.) but still WWE brass has placed her on a lofty pedestal.  She was brought into be a trainer for Tough Enough. She’s likely to go into the Hall of Fame next year. Announcers and fellow wrestlers will often lavish praise on her and refer to her as a legend. Why, all the adoration? Well Trish is the only tangible proof management have that they can take a model and turned her into a good performer. It likely justifies their whole attitude to the women’s division: why bother hiring actual female wrestlers (who usually don’t have the looks), when you could just get models in and train them to be good wrestlers? Accordingly, they’ve tried to replicate the Trish experiment since. Even if, as I have noted, the original was probably a bit over-rated anyway. But, nonetheless, they’ve still tried. And, needless to say, most of the results have been a dismal failure. So, let’s have a look at five of the most blatant failures:
5.Ashley Massaro
Tumblr media
What She Had Going For Her: She was a rock chick! She was totally different from all the other blond models! Well, okay, she really wasn’t. But the glimmer of personality she showed during the second Diva Search contest allowed her to win and gain the $250,000 contract. Also, Kevin Dunn and Vince McMahon liked her. A lot. This was mainly why she got the WWE spot on the CBS show Survivor, when the company was asked by the show to submit a contestant, even though most thought she would be a disaster and it would be ample opportunity to push an up and coming male star (indeed, Ashley lasted about 1 week and a half before getting kicked off).
What Went Wrong: Ashley was an atrocious wrestler. Like, unbelievably bad. Sloppy, un-coordinated, injury-prone...frankly, Manami Toyota would have dug up her grave to roll in if she ever saw one of Massaro’s matches. Jenna Morasca even thought Ashley was a crappy women's wrestler and could have put more of an effort in. Massaro also battled personal issues (reportedly, getting sent him from a Raw taping, due to being in "bad shape", which in wrestling usually means only one thing); she also shrunk dramatically in size, prompting worries about her possibly having an eating disorder. No, it’s never a good sign when we can clearly see your rib cages in pictures.  Then there was the small matter of Rolling Stone Magazine outing her as a high-priced escort in their May 2008 issue after an FBI sting operation. Ashley took to her MySpace, vociferously denying the reports and claiming she was contacting her lawyer to demand a retraction. The Rolling Stone writer, Michelle Grigoriadis, stood by the claims that Massaro had worked as a $50,000 a night for a Los Angeles Escort Agency (and denied the theory that Massaro had been mixed up with a Las Vegas model of the same name.)  The magazine never issued an apology or retraction, and nothing was ever heard about Ashley and her legal action again (quite similar to the time Dave Batista dramatically announced he was taking legal action against Sports Illustrated for linking him with steroid use, and then never made another peep about it again).  She was released some time afterwards. Although it probably had less to do with the Rolling Stone story, and more with the fact that management had had it with her.
Where Is She Now: She was apparently in talks to do a reality show with VH1 (isn’t everyone?) The pitch of the show is that unknown MMA fighters would fight in gruelling matches to win the privilege of dating the supposedly stunning Ashley (for some reason, this concept conjured up the memory in my mind of GSP after he won the interim Welterweight title: “No, No, I don’t want this!”)
4.Christy Hemme
Tumblr media
What She Had Going for Her: She was the winner of the first Diva Search and a management favourite for some time- they liked her look and her willingness to learn. Indeed, Christy was enthusiastic and worked very hard to get better in the ring. Indeed her first few performances were, for someone with limited training, very good indeed.
What Went Wrong: No-one is quite sure, actually. She was demoted to OVW in late 2005 (in a move that was speculated to have been an encouragement by WWE for her to quit on her own; although, instead,  she relished the opportunity to get better)  She was officially released from WWE in December of that year for what were apparently “budget reasons” (which makes sense: she was making quite a lot of money to not do that much, after all). Although Hemme strongly denied this and said she was more than willing to take a paycut. There were also some bizarre rumours about her and HHH (which were shot down by most reporters; after all, Christy looks way too much like a woman for HHH to be interested.) So, what was the deal? Later, Hemme writing in November 2008, claimed she had quit: “My departure from WWE was on my own terms because I stuck to my guns on my morals and values as a human being. I knew in my gut that it would be the end, but I also knew that carrying guilt for knowingly doing something against what I believed wasn't worth getting ahead. Leaving broke my heart... but doing the right thing is something I will always be proud of." Hmmm.
Where is She Now: Earning a huge pay check in TNA to do something that only mildly resembles ring announcing.
3.Kelly Kelly
Tumblr media
What She Had Going for Her: Signed at 19 when Johnny Ace spotted her photo in a bikini magazine (prior to that the only wrestling match she had seen was Andre vs. Hogan at Wrestlemania III)   Kelly was probably far too young when she got called up in 2006, but she is, nonetheless, an enthusiastic performer and well-liked backstage (It’s been noted that Randy Orton got a ton of heat for his criticisms towards her in his infamous interview with Arizona's Real Rock Radio Interview, because of her popularity in the locker room). She worked hard to get better in the ring and was given the divas championship after she won a title match in the fan voting for the interactive edition of Monday Night Raw. She even cried when she won her title(presumably because she was happy, not because she was distressed at being burdened with the ugly thing.) Also, she can count Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn among her biggest supporters backstage.
What Went Wrong: She’s deathly afraid of the ring ropes, for a start. She’s also had some absolutely atrocious matches (Notably with Brie Bella at Money in the Bank) as champion. Also, in recent times, she’s become far more well-known for her turbulent love life than she has for any of her in-ring contributions. In the past, she’s been romantically linked with Dolph Ziggler, Andrew “Test” Martin, Chris Jericho and Batista (who admitted that, shockingly, he found the girl was dating “immature”, apparently not realizing that’s what happens when you date someone young enough to be your daughter.) It was all this that apparently inspired Orton’s harsh remarks last month.
Where Is She Now:  Still hiding in fear from the ring ropes, I assume. Also: shooting Randy Orton evil glares if she spots him backstage at a taping.
2. Candice Michelle
Tumblr media
What She Had Going for Her:  Former fetish model Candice worked hard to improve her in-ring skills after joining WWE in 2004. Eventually, her hard work paid off and WWE rewarded her with the title at the notorious WWE Vengeance in 2007. Oh, and Vince liked her. A lot.
What Went Wrong: While she improved a lot as a wrestler, she still wasn’t that great. She was never particularly over either. Of course what really killed her career was broken collarbone in a late 2007 match with Beth Phoenix, an injury she was never able to fully recover from. She also committed the ultimate diva infraction of Not Being In Totally Perfect Shape and was released soon afterwards. After her release, she put up an incredibly gracious goodbye note on her official WWE blog, thanking the McMahon family and everyone else at WWE for everything they had done for her. It was rather coldly yanked from the site an hour later.
Where Is She Now: She got married to a doctor and had a daughter called Aki-Anne (almost as bad as a NXT name, isn’t it?). She can occasionally be found on the convention circuit, but appears to have moved on from wrestling for the most part.
1. Melina
Tumblr media
What She Had Going For Her: Upon her debut, former beauty queen and Tough Enough contestant Melina Perez gained notice for her wrestling talent, presence and mic skills. Indeed, many predicted that she, along with her on and off screen boyfriend John Morrison, would become a major star in wrestling. Also, Mick Foley was a big fan. And Batista. And Bret Hart (who, in something he will probably never live down, once called her the "best wrestler in the world".)
What Went Wrong: Where to start? She was a heat-magnet for a start: shortly after her debut, she got sent to wrestler’s court in Australia for being rude to the other women and hitting on the wrong people (in their infamous shoot, Paul London and Brian Kendrick noted that she cried the entire time, and they thought the whole thing was awkward, needless and a complete waste of time) She apparently got into a catfight with Sharmell at one point, too. Melina’s erratic behaviour eventually got her and Morrison sent over to Raw. Later, she was kicked out of the locker room by Lita for her attitude. She was often compared to Tammy “Sunny” Sytch, who was also known for being a handful backstage during her run. She also allegedly got Brooke Adams fired for daring to wear furry boots, like she did (for her part, Brooke denied the story on Twitter, but acknowledged Melina was extremely difficult to be around in WWE, calling Melina a "rude, fake b****.")
More recently, Melina convinced herself that Trish Stratus had “stolen” her spot at Wrestlemania and instructed Morrison (who really does need to grow a pair) to give Trish the cold shoulder, bringing down an avalanche of heat on herself and Morrison. She also suffered a fair amount of injuries, including a torn ACL in early 2010, which seem to have affected her wrestling too: She has went from being a decent women’s wrestler to being as bad as the rest of the models turned wrestlers. Even if Ariane from Tough Enough claimed she had a five star classic with Alicia on Superstars once. And, worse still for any diva, years on the road and bad plastic surgery have also taken their toll on her looks: Melina has went from being a pretty girl to looking a bit like Michael Jackson.  In such a cosmetic business (even the always- thin Maria Kanellis once claimed she had been dragged into WWE offices and told to lose weight) this likely doesn’t bode well for her future in WWE.
There’s also the strange behavior: the odd tweets, the strange Youtube videos, her new work-shoot persona (as for whether the angle is any good, let’s put it this way: she’s no CM Punk) and, of course, the skittles. Don’t forget the skittles. You know it’s never a good sign when Michael Cole (who is usually receiving instructions from Vince McMahon) refers to you as a “wackjob” on air (as Cole did last Monday) and it has nothing whatsoever to do with your on screen character.
Where Is She Now: Still munching down skittles and bossing Morrison around, I guess.

Our Talk with Nora Loreto
The first official campaign event for #Refund2020 was a talk with Nora Loreto (writer, journalist, and host of Sandy and Nora’s podcast). Nora has a background in student activism, and has since been advising and encouraging others to get involved across Canada. We were very excited that she agreed to speak with our panel and engage with the audience that attended.
While I don’t have a transcript of the event, I will carefully characterize her responses.
We started with the question:
Why does Concordia admin owe us free/reimbursed tuition?
While our panelists spoke on the services we paid for and did not receive, Nora pressed us a step further, encouraging us not to focus on education as a commodity (because then the capitalists win), but to demand education as a right. This (somewhat profound) insight prompted a bigger discussion than we initially planned. While we still believe Concordia students are owed a refund for the 2020, and now Winter 2021 semesters, we need to consider our place in this movement—fundamentally, what do we want to win for students to come?
I thought back to a book I read last year, Escaping Paternalism by Rizzo and Whitman (2019). In the second chapter, they speak of behavioural economics under neoliberalism. They present a few key considerations that impact whether or not members of a given community will change their mind: framing effects, endowment effects, and status quo bias. You can view these in a snapshot from Google Books: https://books.google.ca/books/publisher/content?id=w4DCDwAAQBAJ&pg=PA47&img=1&zoom=3&hl=en&sig=ACfU3U3mq8_-lBm3K5EpeS-4LqLC2TIkvw&w=1280 (Rizzo and Whitman, 2019, ch. 2).
After speaking with Nora, I’ve been looking at framing and status quo bias. Has my own bias gotten in the way of achieving more? Has our framing centred on the status quo by viewing education as the commodified experience it’s sold to us as? Always considering, always learning.
The second question that our panelists took on was:
How would a refund/free tuition work?
And the answer among members of our campaign was that we hold the administration accountable, but ask them to stand with us as needed to approach the provincial government.
Nora put it more bluntly: that we need to demand it from the province. That we need to build coalition with universities across Québec and get it done (admitting this would be difficult under the CAQ).
The more I think about it, the more I see two goals: one, to demand better of our administration, and two: to continue the fight for free tuition in a way that won’t grow stagnant at our campus, but have reach across the province. This gives me a lot of hope and excitement about where this movement for economic justice can go.
One great question from the audience concerned union organizing methods that could be adopted by the student movement. Nora shared plenty of tips, many of which can be found in her work, “From demonized to organized : building the new union movement (2013).” This crucial advice, naturally, had me revisit some of the class readings we had: namely, Shragge and McAlevey.
In chapter 5 of Activism and Social Change, Shragge provides the following critique of Lotz’ ideas on community development:
“Although there is a rhetoric of change, in contrast to the social or community action approach, this change is usually focused inward on the community itself rather than outward on the wider social, economic, and political structures. Further, the process of working towards these changes is through consensus-building across interests rather than organizing to promote specific interests of the poor or oppressed groups. The emphasis is on meeting needs and finding pragmatic ways to do so that do not challenge those with power. There is little discussion about inequality, interest, power, or the ways that development can challenge these factors that play such a large role in shaping the social issues and problems. (Shragge 2013, p. 101-102).”
I think, whether we aim to fall to one side of this or the other, asking these questions regularly as we build any movement for change is crucial. And we can hardly speak of organizing for bigger changes without looking to Jane McAlevey, who writes of a union-organizing campaign that took place between 1998 and 2001:
“We thought in terms of ‘workplace/nonworkplace’ issues, rejecting ‘community/labor,’ the latter implying that workers are not members of the community and that community members do not spend most of their time at work. Everything about this model is focused on creating synergy between workplace and nonworkplace struggles, and recognizing the labor movement’s need to be at the table inside and outside the shop.
“We organized the ‘whole member’ by integrating the members’ concerns. Plenty of economic forces outside the shop conspire to negate even direct wage and benefit gains made by the contract. (McAlevey, 2003, p. 31).”
This reminds me, personally, that the paradigm through which we base or organizing matters. We are students, but we are also largely residents of Québec. And international students, who may not be residents of Québec, are still members of our student (and typically local) community. And in order to achieve change for our communities, we must be in community. The reason this is so often difficult is because we are simultaneously entities in a system designed to overwhelm disband us.
“This (Thatcher- Reagan neoliberal) revolution aimed at releasing markets and morals to govern and discipline individuals while maximizing freedom, and it did so by demonizing the social and the democratic version of political life,” notes Wendy Brown in her 2019 book, In the Ruins of Neoliberalism (p. 22). She later adds, “By the end of the 1970s, exploiting a crisis of profitability and stagflation, neoliberal programs were rolled out by Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, again centering on deregulating capital, breaking organized labor, privatizing public goods and services, reducing progressive taxation, and shrinking the social state…The above account, hewing to a neo-Marxist approach, formulates neoliberalism as an opportunistic attack by capitalists and their political lackeys on Keynesian welfare states, social democracies, and state socialism (p. 29).
This attack is ongoing, and we’ll only be able to stand against it with the power of empathetic, strategic collective organizing. We're extremely grateful to Nora Loreto's assistance in pointing this out, and are focusing even more on building the right coalition as we move forward into the next phase of the campaign.

Here’s some more Nora
I changed a few things regarding my Django OC Nora Kingsbury. She’s known to the masses nowadays as Nora Lémieux because I said so. x3 I have a lot of her history written down here, but I’m sans a good FC for her. I was going to use Robin Wright, but I just don’t think she has the right look I’m going for. If you guys have any ideas, I’d love to hear them! So, here’s a shit-ton of OC information that no one asked for. Enjoy.
Section 1: The Basics 1A. What is your character's full name? Eleanor June Lémieux 1B. Was it their parents that named them that? If not, who? Nora was named after her paternal grandmother, and it was at her father’s bequest. 1C. Is there any special meaning behind the name? The name Eleanor has a long history with queens, and it was because of that history that I chose it. Plus, I just really like the name.
2A. How old are they now? Nora is in her late thirties to early forties 2B. Where were they born? Nora was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but primarily raised in Macon County, Georgia 3A. What's their race?
Caucasian 4A. Where do they stand on the social pyramid? She’s comfortably middle class and lives in a relatively nice flat above a bookstore. Section 2: Lifestyle 1A. Do they have a job/occupation? What is it? Yes she does. She’s a schoolteacher. 1B. What motivates them to keep doing this job?
Nora may not seem like it, but she does like children. She enjoys teaching, especially encouraging young girls to read. She’s quite motherly and tends to be something of a hen. 1C. What job would they rather have?
In all honesty, I think she’s pretty happy where she is. She likes teaching and she greatly enjoys the children. 2A. What are their religious views? Her family is Catholic/Southern Baptist, but she herself is nonreligious 3A. what have they accomplished? When?
Well, she happens to be an intelligent woman circa the Civil War Era. She hasn’t died in childbirth yet or done anything remotely terrible to other people (other than seducing murderers while her friend shoots them in the face, but that doesn’t count). She’s got a pretty decent job for a woman in the American South, she can hold her own in a fight, all in all I think she’s doing fairly well. 4A. Are they a part of any organizations? She joined a woman’s suffragette party. Because of reasons. 5A. What do they do in their spare time? Nora greatly enjoys reading. She favors French literature and her favorite book is The Three Musketeers (she is loathe to find out Candie enjoys it as well). She enjoys listening to German classical composers, mostly Schubert (he’s Austrian, but she claims there is little difference. It’s one of those delightful debates she has with Schultz). She also likes to go for walks in the park on Sundays and look at hats. Section 3: Psychology 1A. Describe their basic personality.
Nora is a feisty firecracker of a woman hidden beneath a demure outward appearance. She’s extremely quick-witted and dry-humored, and she can come across as arrogant very easily. She’s not prone to the realm of extreme emotion often and can come across as unfeeling. She has a very strong moral sense of justice and is quick to judge. 2A. What part of their personality really stands out? If any part? Her sarcastic wit is famous throughout her aunt’s social circles. Rumor has it that she picked it up from her grandmother from beyond the grave. 3A. How do they view life? Are they an optimist? Pessimist? Realist? Idealist?
Nora tries to be an optimist, but it’s rather difficult when you’re a woman during an era where women were nothing more than pretty dolls on a shelf to be admired for a bit and then cast aside when their beauty fades. She’s absolutely a realist with idealistic tendencies and these are among other things she gets into debates with Schultz about. 4A. When it comes to making tough a tough decision, do they rely on thought or feeling? Faith or fact? Absolutely she relies on thought and fact. She prefers not to be seen as a well of emotions as men were prone on viewing women (and still are). There are few times where her anger can get the better of her, but she prefers to stuff that deep down inside where it can fester quietly as a mental illness. 5A. Do they have a sense of humor? She’s extremely dry, yes. Schultz greatly enjoys it when they’re caustic little shits together. 6A. What motivates them to keep moving? The will to just live as well as she possibly can. 7A. What do they desire in life? The right to vote would be a good start. 8A. What are they afraid of? Horses. Horses and heights. 9A. Are they superstitious about anything? No. 10A. What secrets do they keep, if anything? Nora is not a very secretive person. There are some things that she’d rather keep to herself, but nothing jarring. She has very few skeletons in her closet and she prefers to be open and brashly honest about things. This usually lands her in trouble. 10B. How well are these secrets kept? It takes quite a bit to get her to trust someone openly enough to spill any secrets, so I would say fairly well. Section 3: Mental Abilities 1A. What can/cannot they do mentally? (ie, IQ, certain school subjects, mental/emotional health)
She is an absolute master with literature and wordage. She loves the musicality of language and she has an excellent memory. She’s not quite as in touch with her emotions as she should seem, and often comes across as cold and arrogant.
1B. What are they strongest at? She is strongest with language. She can find just the right words to express how she feels or the right passage to say what she means.
1C. What are they weakest at?
Her emotions are well-guarded and very much a treasure. She is not prone to passionate outbursts as some would like to believe, but get her angry enough and she will explode like a tiny blonde volcano. 2A. What do they like to do?
She likes to read and write letters. She also greatly enjoys arguing and debates. 3A. What do they hate to do? She hates having to dumb herself down or to play the simpering dumb blonde. It’s demeaning and very much something she’s had to do before. She loathes it.
4A. Were they educated? Absolutely. 4B. If so, did they enjoy it? Very much so, yes.
4C. for how long? She’s got a basic ladies education and some charm school (she never graduated because she was kicked out for radical ideas and sassing the teachers)
Section 4: History
1B. What do they remember most about it?
She mostly remembers arguing with her teachers about certain points in history and societal views on marriage, owning property, ect. Add to the fact that she did not have many friends at this point that she could talk to. She was rather lonely at school.
2A. What were their teen years like? It was full of frills and lace and it’s something she shudders to think about. This would be around the time that her Aunt Jessie took her in and started grooming her to be a good Southern debutante. This means charm school, girl’s boarding school, things of that sort. She was sort of groomed into the perfect wife, but it made her angry and bitter. She’s like a tiny human espresso.
3A. What do they struggle to accomplish? Being a woman in the Civil War Era, you struggle with a lot of things. Men do not take her seriously when they absolutely should, people don’t listen to her, her emotional health is all over the place from her concealing everything inside, the woman is a mess of issues. 4A. What do they regret the most; if anything? She greatly regrets moving down to Georgia. She completely ruined her relationship with her mother in that regard and there are times when she wishes things could have been different between them. 5A. How did they end up on their current path? Was it their choice? Yes and no. Her aunt took her in when her mother was at her wit’s end and that was beyond her control, but she made the choice to run away from her own engagement party and fraternize with a dentist turned bounty hunter.
6A. Did anything serious happen that changed their life forever? Absolutely. Meeting Dr. Schultz completely changed her life around, sometimes for the worse and sometimes for the better. She likes to joke that it was for the worse, but he knows better.
Section 5: Family 1A. Who are their parents? Jacqueline and George Lémieux 2A. What is their sexual orientation? Nora is a boring run-of-the-mill heterosexual 3A. Are they involved with anyone romantically? Who?
You bet your ass she is, but she’ll never admit it. Dr. Schultz is her dearest and closest friend, and there are times where she feels they’re more than that. She usually keeps that to herself. 3B. What do they like/love about this person? what do they dislike or hate? She is in love with his mind, his manner of speaking, his quick thinking and his sense of morality. What she doesn’t like is his stubbornness and pride. And his innate selfishness. She could smack some sense into that man, seriously.
4A. Do they have a best friend? Who?
She doesn’t really have friends? Nora is a quiet and closed-off sort of person, though she does get on well with Hildy. 4B. Why are they best friends? I don’t think anyone could not like Broomhilda. She’s adorable and sweet and must be protected at all costs. Nora likes her because of her unrelenting spirit and because she has someone she can learn German from who doesn’t like to annoy her for shits and giggles.
4C. Any other friends?
Sure, any friend of the good doctor is a friend of hers. She adores Django especially.
5A. Do they hate anyone? Does anyone hate them? Who?
She hates Calvin J Candie and all his ilk. She especially hates his cousin Randy Mackle because she was forced into a marriage with him. The feeling is rather mutual. Randy doesn’t appreciate a smart mouth or anyone who doesn’t take his shit. He’s a bully and a douchecanoe. Section 7: Is there anything else you have to say about this character?
I absolutely love writing about Nora and I hope you guys enjoy learning more about her. She’s a load of fun to write with, and I hope she’s a joy for you guys to interact with if you ever find the time!

1. Your first OC ever?
It was a vampire in the Beyblade universe, her name was Tru Darling and I was 14, don’t judge me lol
2. Do you have a personal favourite among your OCs?
I have a personal soft spot for Eleanora ‘Nora’ Argent obviously. She’s the first fully fleshed out character I’ve created and I thought about her for a year before I started writing. I’m just super proud of her.
3. Have you ever adopted a character or gotten a character from someone else?
The same beyblade fic I had made friends with some folks on ff.net and basically added them as characters. By the time I was down there was like 20 OC’s in the story and it wasn’t finished. It was a mess lol.
4. A character you rarely talk about?
Mika Parker, she’s a poly-sterek fic I started to work on but she never got very far. I might still write her some day. She helps spark!Stiles control his magic and come to grips with his attraction to one Derek Hale
5. If you could make only one of your OCs popular/known, who would it be?
Ooooo it’s hard to pick, but I think I’d have to go with Nora. Just because I’m like 18 chapters in and I just really want to see people love my little broken bird.
6. Two OCs of yours that look alike despite not being related?
The only ones who aren’t related that look somewhat alike would be Gabriel and Valentina and only because they’re blonde and blue eyed. Not really anything other than that.
7. Are your OCs part of any story or stories?
Eleanora and Gabriel are part of The Moon Huntress (latest chapter here)
Frankie and Ben Connelly are part of Above All Else which is in the process of being written. (learn more about them here and here)
8. Do you RP as any of your OCs? If you do, introduce one of your RP OCs here!
I don’t RP sorry
9. Would you ever be willing to give any of your OCs to someone else?
I’m willing to allow crossovers or fan works but I would like to be asked first although those who’ve already made me stuff no they have full permission ;)
10. Introduce an OC with a complicated design?
All of them lol I love writing complicated characters what can I say?
11. Is there any OC of yours you could describe as a “sunshine”?
Not sure what’s meant here, but Frankie is all smiles and sweetness on the surface...
12. Name an OC that isn’t yours but who you like a lot
I can’t pick just one lol.... a few OC’s that I’ve read so far are and they’re all great. If I miss someone I’m sorry.... Ellie Connor, Piper Dean & Merikh Amor by @lady-baratheon Fred Ackerman by @susiesamurai Emery Duran, Diana Chang & Bianca Larson by @dubonet Maddie Hayes by @anarchxst Arianna Patrakis by @fraysquake and there’s so many more my brain is just not functioning right now.
13. Do you have any troublemaker OCs?
My biggest troublemaker would be Gabriel from TMH, he’s not even fully introduced into the fic as a real person and he’s causing all kinds of problems ;)
14. Introduce an OC with a tragic backstory
Eleanora Argent thought she was tough as nails, but being back in Beacon Hills hunting a rogue alpha werewolf throws her world for a loop. And the addition of Derek Hale in her life only helps to complicate things. Her family has a code, but what's her code?
15. Do you like to talk about your OCs with other people?
Like it? I love it! And I love hearing about others OCs as well. Anything you wanna know ask away and I’ll try my best to answer.
16. Which one of your OCs would be the best at biology (school subject)?
Probably Frankie, she’s super smart and not afraid to go after finding something out she doesn’t know about. Unfortunately she doesn’t have much time to study.
17. Any OC OTPs?
Obviously Eleanora x Derek for sure..... my OTP ride and die.
18. Any OC crackships?
A few Eleanora paired with @lydamartin‘s Oliver always has amazing things. And I have a feeling her with @dubonet‘s Will Martin would be interesting as well. And I also love her with @susiesamurai‘s Kevin ;)
I’ve always thought Gabriel and @papermoon262‘s Alex would be really interesting if they could survive each other lol.
Frank with @dubonet‘s Dylan Larson has been interesting lately as well. And Ben could be interesting with either @catgrant‘s Gwen Lodge or @lady-baratheon‘s Piper Dean
19. Introduce an OC that means a lot to you (and explain why)
20. Do any of your OCs sing? If they sing, care to share more details (headcanon voice, what kind of songs they like etc)?
The one that would probably sing would be Valentina and it’d be a soft sweet voice singing something in Russian
21. Your most artistic OC
Nora for sure, if she was in AU she’d be finishing art school and have a thriving career illustrating graphic novels or something similar. She draws allot to try to sort her mess of a head out.
22. Is there any OC of yours people tend to mischaracterize? If yes, how?
Nora again, I sometimes get the feeling people think of her allot like Kate but I hope that the more you read the more people realize they couldn’t be more different.
23. Introduce OC that has changed from your first idea concerning what the character would be like?
Frankie has changed allot but it has to do with development as she doesn’t have a story fully yet. Also watching the first episode of Riverdale changed some things in my head.
24. If you could meet one OC of yours, who would it be and why?
Probably Nora so I could give a hug she wouldn’t take ;)
25. The OC that resembles you the most (same hobby, height, shared like/dislike for something etc?)
There’s allot of myself in Nora, hard to write some of the traits without including myself or having personal experience but I feel each of my characters has a small part of me in them. Yes even Gabriel... :D
26. Have you ever had to change your OC’s design or something else about them against your will?
I changed Nora FC after joining tumblr and realizing that I wanted to learn to edit and it was just to hard to find good stuff to makes edits with her original FC.
27. Any OCs that were inspired by a certain song?
I’m one of those people who writes with my entire music library on shuffle so there’s probably some crossovers from my favourite songs but not inspired exactly no.
28. Your most dangerous OC?
Definitely Gabriel, there’s nothing more dangerous than a man with no morals, he’s the true definition of beast when it comes to werewolves.
29. Which one of your OCs would go investigate an abandoned house at night without telling anyone they’re going?
Pretty much all of them... they’re all pretty much lone birds if you know what I mean.
30. Which one of your OCs would most likely have a secret stuffed animal collection?
I wanna say Gabriel because it’s just too funny but probably more like Frankie, she wants to be mature but she’s just a small child inside.
31. Pick one OC of yours and explain what their tumblr blog would be like (what they reblog, layout, anything really)
Frankie’s would be lots of pink, sayings reblogged and lots of fashion and hipster blogs reblogged.
32. Which one of your OCs would be the most suitable horror game protagonist and why?
Nora.... girls got skills!!!!
33. Your shyest OC?
Probably Frankie, she’s shy to go after what she truly wants.
34. Do you have any twin characters?
No I don’t
35. Any sibling characters?
Well Eleanora is Allison Argent’s sister
Ben & Frankie are siblings.
36. Do you have OC pairs where the other part belongs to someone else (siblings, lovers, friends etc)?
Eleanora is paired with Derek Hale and Gabriel and is siblings with Allison Argent and daughter to Chris and Victoria, Niece to Kate, Granddaughter to Gerard and Friends with Stiles, Isaac, Erica and Boyd.
Gabriel is paired with Eleanora.
Valentina is paired with Oliver Queen.
Frankie is paired with Jughead Jones and becomes friends with the gang. Sister to Ben.
Ben is paired with Ms. Grundy and is friends with FP. Brother to Frankie.
Mika is paired with Stiles and Derek and Friends with Jackson.
37. Introduce an OC who is not quite human
Mika is a talented spark and emissary from England that is a member of the pack Jackson ends up in. She meets Stiles through Jackson and then Derek through Stiles. She’s a fun loving but no nonsense when it comes to magic kind of girl.
38. Which one of your OCs would be the best dancer?
Valentina is very good on her feet and could whisk you away ballroom style.
39. Introduce any character you want
Valentina has climbed the ranks of the Bratva for the past five years. All without a care about what Oliver Queen had been doing since their last meeting. The last time they spoke one of them was laying on the ground bloody and beaten and the other stared coldly down.
She had been 20 at the time and full of rage and a need for revenge. Now when Church is busy destroying Star City the Bratva bring in their best enforcer and assassin to take him down. Her mission is to strengthen their holdings in the city and it’s not long before she runs into it’s new Mayor.
Seeing her again brings up questions for Oliver and gives his new team more reasons to question his methods. But can he stop her from adding another name to her ever growing list of regrets? Or is she too well trained by the Bratva for even Oliver to stop her when she gets her target.
40. Any fond memories linked to your characters? Feel free to share!
The fact that Nora is basically the reason I’ve gotten to meet all you amazing people, love ya.
41. Has anyone drawn fanart of your OCs? If yes, maybe show a picture or two here (remember sources & permissions!)
No I haven’t had any drawn I’ve had many awesome other edits made for my characters and I love them all.
42. Which one of your OCs would be the most interested in Greek gods?
Probably Gabriel ;)
43. Do you have any certain type when you create your OCs? Do you tend to favour some certain traits or looks? It’s time to confess
I don’t think I do....
44. Something you like about your OCs in general
I love that they’re all fun to write for in different ways...
45. A character you no longer use?
That original OC lol.
46. Has anyone ever told you that you treat your OCs badly?
A few times teehee....
47. Has anyone ever (friendly) claimed any of your OCs as their child?
A few times teehee....
48. OC who is a perfect cinnamon roll, too good for this world, too pure
None of my characters are pure......
49. Which one of your OCs would most likely enjoy memes
Probably Frankie or maybe Gabriel in a weird way....
50. Give me the good ol’ OC talk here. Talk about anything you want
I just want to thank everyone who continues to support me and my OCs I love you all. Even if it’s just reading these and not comment or liking or anything I still love that you take that time. I just want everyone to love my children like I do :D
Wow this is a beast, sorry some of my answers aren’t longer...

Cover Story: No Man's Land
Tess Bennett 2018-07-30
For the month of July, we secretly erased men from Which-50. Our audience numbers dropped, our social presence evaporated, and we annoyed people who for years have helped us build our brand off the back of their hard work and expertise. They did nothing wrong — we were just jerks — but that’s discrimination for you. Worst of all, as you will see at the end of the story, we still couldn’t balance the ledger — even when we stitched the men’s mouths shut.
Those men we silenced are an impressive bunch. The ones we know personally are all good people who are supporters, mentors, and allies to the women they work with. None of these men, as far as we know, ever did anything to warrant our harsh treatment of their endeavours.
But many others do, every day.
Among the voices you didn’t hear in July, and whose contributions we ignored, discounted, or — best of all — passed off as our own, you can include: the Chief Digital Officer of PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the Head of Digital for Moët Hennessey in Australia, the chief of NORA, the founder of Kogan, the current and past chiefs of the Digital Transformation Agency in Australia, as well as the former digital chief of the ACT, Oracle’s Senior Vice President of Customer Experience (14 hours on a plane just to be ignored, and he’s a client — eek!), the CEO of Domain, the new Managing Director of SAP (One of our top five clients — eek!!), the APAC VP for Strategic Solutions at Sizmek, the boss of Catch, the Australian boss of Amazon, the President of the ACS,  the CEOs of Nine, Fairfax and News, the Chief Digital Officer of QBE, the Chief of Sales of Nine, the Head of Digital Transformation at software house Adobe (another of our biggest clients — eek!!!), the founder of Red Piranha, a Gartner Fellow, the Group Managing Director of Networks at Telstra and more than 50 others.
They did nothing wrong — that is important to understand in the context of this story. They worked hard, they put themselves out there every day, they helped us when they didn’t have to, even at their own inconvenience. And still, we discriminated against them — because it served our interests at the time to do so.
This is not a story about women. This is a story about men, and why we chose to bring a bazooka to the diversity knife fight. The current approaches simply don’t move the needle fast enough.
Barely a month goes by without one of the major business titles, industry conferences, or business networks running features or panels on Women in IT, or Women in Business, or Women in Media. Often these are managed and run by people who care deeply about the issue, and who have committed years to the cause — and their efforts should be applauded and encouraged. Just not today.
As much as the next person, we love a fancy lunch with tasteful floral centrepieces and a menu which always features salmon and white wine (please keep the invitations coming). Yet it’s hard to escape the nagging doubt that something is missing.
Women — and especially young women — need role models, opportunities to network, and the support of their peers. But the thing that will really help them — and will truly move us towards a world where everyone benefits from throwing the largest available pool of talent at any given problem — is for men to change their behaviour.
However, as John Birmingham’s bro-tacular deep dive into the world of workplace misogyny — “Men, Sucking” — amply demonstrates, cluelessness remains all too common, as does the most appalling behaviour.
Stop pretending that bad is good
Here we are in 2018 and only 11 of 200 CEOs on the ASX 200 are women. The percentage of female board members at those companies has stalled at 25 per cent. Some people boast that it’s one of the best diversity results in the world, but the truth is that 25 per cent is a terrible number for which there is no justification.
Sadly, executive recruiters tell us that it’s actually easier to get women onto boards than into the C-suite. That’s why, at an operational level, the number of female CEOs, CFOs, CIOs and CMOs and other C-suite roles has not radically shifted from where it was a decade ago.
Because women aren’t the problem. Men are the problem.
So is Which-50
It turns out we are as bad as everyone else, as the stats around our stories reveal. In June 2018, Which-50’s editorial coverage mentioned 111 men and 24 women (and seven of those women appeared in a single story).
And unless you stop and take stock of figures like these it’s too easy to just to keep calling the same people and amplifying the same voices. (For the record, Which-50 has six full-time staff in its Sydney office, five of whom are men. Diversity much?)
It’s been a long month.
Apart from the bit about excluding half the population from our stories, we very deliberately changed nothing else about our coverage. We decided from the start that we would write the same kinds of stories we would always write. We interviewed women and men, but we just ignored the men. Or rather, we discounted their contributions — either by removing them completely from the story or more commonly by simply referring to them as “spokespeople”.
Men also disappeared from the images we used to illustrate our stories.
In practical terms, that meant the CEOs of Amazon, Microsoft, Walmart and Facebook — and the US President — were all relegated on the basis of their gender. They probably didn’t notice. (Well, maybe Priscilla Chan’s husband did — we are pretty sure he monitors everything.)
Closer to home, Australian male executives and visiting male VIPs we interviewed also got the silent treatment. And, while it took them some time, eventually they started to notice.
Hypocrisy
We were not entirely pure of heart. About five to ten per cent of the content on Which-50 comes from our Digital Intelligence Unit — the digital agency whose work with clients funds our journalism (our brand and our relationship with readers fuels their sales — it’s kinda symbiotic, like rats and the plague). We didn’t ask our clients to change their marketing content to reflect our new rules, nor even tell them what we were doing.
Why not? Honestly, we didn’t think this through properly, and we like money.
So a lucky few men skated through — ironically, perhaps, because of money. And yeah, it was hypocritical of us to profit from discrimination, but it’s not like discrimination was ever anything but hypocritical so we were in good company.
However, if male executives from those same client companies crossed our path as part of our regular news reporting during July,  then yeah, they got erased.
It’s also worth noting that we didn’t touch the wider issue of diversity. This experiment was solely conducted on the basis of gender, without taking into account race, sexuality, disability or socio-economic background.
What did we do?
Individual approaches to this task varied across our editorial team, and my colleagues (who we can’t name because they are blokes and those are the rules) certainly rose to the challenge.
There were immediate concerns about the effect the initiative could have on the quality of editorial coverage. And with good cause. An email from one of the Which-50 journalists noted, “Removing an individual from an article presents several practical challenges. For example, an article about the former head of the Australian government’s Digital Transformation Agency slamming a major government initiative carries less weight if you cannot name the former DTA CEO (there are four to pick from already)”. Gee, it turns out that when the discrimination grenade goes off, there is collateral damage. Who’da thunk it?
It’s also harder to blatantly discriminate against people than you might imagine — at least if you have anything even remotely resembling a moral core. We all experienced a level of discomfort during the month, although some of Which-50’s editorial staff enjoyed the drama of it all more than others.
Another colleague also took to their gender baiting with a little too much relish on occasion. In his words: “Some of us also took some of the smarter ideas from the men we interviewed and passed them off as our own … because that happens all the time …. All. The. Time. Plus it appealed to my sense of humour. However another journalist point blank refused to do this, and fair enough (but he’s a wuss, just saying)”.
With two days left in the program, we’ve doubled the number of women mentioned on Which-50 month-over-month, but that still doesn’t come close to the 111 men we wrote about in June.
What happened next?
When men rang up to query why they had suddenly gone missing from the story (or, more commonly, when their female PR managers or agents rang on their behalf to ask) we simply responded by asking “How does it feel to have your contribution discounted on the basis of your gender?”
Sadly, no-one took us up on the offer to describe their reaction — but the offer still stands, fellas.
We kept the program secret. That secrecy extended to all of our own staff who were not directly involved in editorial. They are only learning of the initiative this morning. We knew if the experiment leaked, it would fail. It’s not that we don’t trust our salespeople, but they’re all men and you know how men love to gossip.
This month would have been easier on us if we had co-opted the industry’s help and lined up 20 female executives to interview ahead of time. In the end, we rejected that approach because the worst kinds of discrimination happen in the dark, not in the light — although a surprising amount occurs in plain sight.
And we didn’t apologise to anyone because that never happens either — although we did tell one of our contributors who was caught up in the program simply because it made sense to do so at the time.
What did we learn?
Throughout the month we kept a record of the things we learned, how it made our jobs harder, or how it hurt the mission of the masthead:
The most common reaction of the men who discovered what we did to them was confusion. You could almost hear their inner dialogue, “What just happened?”  In truth, we would have to run the experiment for a year and repeatedly exclude them to replicate the daily experiences of their female peers. Oh, and pay them 15.3 per cent less for doing the same job they do today;
Lots of discrimination happens in plain sight, in open-plan offices or in team meetings, or on stage at conferences, and everyone sees it happen. Yet, nothing changes;
We learned that women are less likely than men to share stories about themselves and, as a result, our traffic — especially for our cover stories — tanked;
Indeed, we suffered a double-digit decline in traffic in July, our first reversal for seven months;
We spent a lot more time chasing women for interviews and a lot longer in iStock searching through canned pictures of women in professional settings;
We annoyed people who for years have given us their time and insights, often at their own expense;
We discovered successful female executives in leadership roles all over the country in different roles and different companies who we had never spoken to before. We never called them in the past because the men we called in leadership roles were always happy to call us back. (Please keep returning our calls guys!);
Our jobs got harder immediately. Try writing an appointment story about a male CEO without mentioning him;
And our readers suffered from a diminished product. They didn’t get the full context of the remarks or any chance to reference the experience and expertise of the men we interviewed. But guess what — that happens all the time when women’s voices are silenced.
While what we’ve done for the past month was overt and confected discrimination — conducted joyously with malice aforethought — subtle discrimination is everywhere. Often we will receive a press release quoting men and women and the men always seem to get prime billing. We visited the investor relations page of every ASX 200 company in the country, and we found that the female directors were more likely to be listed last or at least towards the end of the list.
Here’s the bottom line: everybody lost
In two days’ time, the experiment ends and men are back. Forty-five women told us their stories, but that was still too small a portion compared to the 70 faceless, nameless men who dominated the pages and the agenda of Which-50.com in July, despite our best efforts to exclude them.
Deliberately and actively discriminating against an entire gender is hard work and gets harder the longer it goes on. Seriously, it would be so much easier to treat everyone the same.

Trump’s male admin is obsessed with attacking women’s health care and I’ve had enough.
The Trump administration on Friday, October 6, 2017, moved to expand the rights of employers to deny women insurance coverage for contraception and issued sweeping guidance on religious freedom that critics said could also erode civil rights protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Basically, Trump’s administration rolled back an Obama-era rule requiring most employers to provide their employees with birth control coverage without co-payments. The mandate, established under the Affordable Care Act, has helped millions of women avoid unwanted pregnancy by eliminating out-of-pockets costs for contraception.
Tumblr media
TRUMP’S ASSAULT ON THE BIRTH CONTROL MANDATE
Under new rules, the Departments of Health and Human Services, Treasury and Labor will make it easier for employers to deny contraception coverage if they have a “religious or moral objection” to doing so. Further, the departments have made it harder for women who are denied birth control coverage to get no-cost contraception directly from insurance companies, under a process established by the previous administration.
If that were not bad enough, officials made the changes effective immediately.
The administration claimed, absurdly, that the rule had to be issued quickly because the normal process of seeking public comment before acting would be “impracticable, unnecessary, or contrary to the public interest.” It used other specious arguments to justify its decision — asserting, for instance, that coverage of contraception could lead to more “risky sexual behavior” among some teenagers and young women.
OBJECTIONS AND LAWSUITS
Dr. Haywood Brown, president of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The move fulfills a promise made by President Donald Trump in a Rose Garden ceremony in May when he signed an executive order that he said restored religious freedoms, said Roger Severino, director of the Office for Civil Rights at the Health and Human Services Department.
Medical and legal groups immediately objected.
“By taking away women’s access to no-cost birth control coverage, the rules give employers a license to discriminate against women.” - Fatima Goss Graves, President of the National Women’s Law Center
The American Civil Liberties Union said it would file suit immediately.
Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey also sued.
"Among other things, many women are likely to turn to MassHealth – the state’s Medicaid plan – for coverage, which will place a financial burden on the state," Healey's office said in a statement.
"Today’s complaint alleges that the new rule is unconstitutional by allowing the federal government to endorse certain religious beliefs over a woman’s right to make choices about her own health care."
Most U.S. women use birth control at some point.
“Contraception is a medical necessity for women during approximately 30 years of their lives.” - Dr. Haywood Brown, president of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
“It improves the health of women, children and families as well as communities overall; reduces maternal mortality; and enhances economic stability for women and their families. All Americans deserve the ability to make personal health care decisions without intrusion from their employers or the government.”
HOW HAS THE CONTRACEPTION COVERAGE RULE AFFECTED WOMEN?
Tumblr media
Contraceptive use among women is widespread, with over 99% of sexually-active women using at least one method at some point during their lifetime.1 Contraceptives make up an estimated 30-44% of out-of-pocket health care spending for women.2 Since the implementation of the ACA, out-of-pocket spending on prescription drugs has decreased dramatically (Figure 3). The majority of this decline (63%) can be attributed to the drop in out-of-pocket expenses on the oral contraceptive pill for women.3 One study estimates that roughly $1.4 billion dollars per year in out-of-pocket savings on the pill resulted from the ACA’s contraceptive mandate.4 By 2013, most women had no out-of-pocket costs for their contraception, as median expenses for most contraceptive methods, including the IUD and the pill, dropped to zero.5
CONCLUSION
For the first time, the ACA set federal preventive services rules, including no-cost contraceptive coverage, for all insurance plans. If the Trump Administration modifies or eliminates the ACA contraceptive coverage rule, scope of coverage will depend on where a woman lives, where she works, and her insurance plan. Millions of women could lose no-cost coverage for the full range of contraceptive methods. Insurance companies and employers will be the ones to make choices about coverage and cost-sharing.
For some women, their choices will be limited, and some of the most effective and costly methods will be out of financial reach.

Tattooed Ladies! Though we missed the circus sideshows that hurried the name itself conjures up images of resides, lived on the edge by women that were interesting.
Tattoos on women are not brand new to us, and they were not new to the women of the circus sideshows. Girls and tattooing have a long history, which twists and turns with changing ideals about adornment, modesty, independence, and function.
The earliest known tattooed ladies were Egyptian: several feminine mummies have patterns of dots above their abdomens, thighs and chests. Early explorers assumed that these women - ancient guys didn't have tattoos - were prostitutes. But new interpretations (and understanding of varied tattooing practices) suggest that these tattoos were likely given as talismans to assist women in childbirth and pregnancy.
The ancient Greeks learned tattooing from the Thracians in what is now Turkey, and they used the technique to tattoo the faces of criminals and slaves with such charming inscriptions as "stop me, I am a runaway". You would not want one of these tattoos lives on in the word "stigma"-that the ancient Greek word for tattoo has been "stig", meaning "prick" or "stitch".
In northern Europe, the pre-Celts tattooed themselves together with moons, stars, and animals, for ornamental purposes as favorite themes for women. And despite periodic bans on tattoos from authorities, Medieval Christians returned with tattoos of symbols - memorabilia from and evidence of their adventures from crusades and religious pilgrimages.
When Captain James Cook returned from the Pacific Islands in 1769 with accounts of "tatau-ing", the word "tattoo", which was also utilized to describe military drumming, came into the lexicon. A new craze for tattoos arose in England, starting with sailors, working up to the officers, then to royalty. And women got tattoos as well - even Lady Randolph Churchill, Winston's mother, got a tattoo of a snake. But while women were Flirting with raciness by acquiring tattoos, they were subject to the requirements of Victorian culture, and made certain those tattoos were coverable - to be safe from judgmental eyes. The trend for tattoos spread to the United States also: in 1876, The New York Times reported on it. However, something strange happened women decided that they would become tattooed women.
We do not know if the first tattooed woman was Nora Hildebrandt or Irene Woodward, but both contenders for the honour made a decision to become tattooed women in 1882, letting Martin Hildebrandt, the most prominent tattoo artist of the time, to help them recreate themselves and an industry. And their success was immediate - once tattooed girls started working the circuit, the mixture of stories and showing of skin was too strong a force to be resisted, though there had been plenty of men in circuses for more than 80 years. Nora has been supplied a narrative of catch by the Lakota Sioux and enforced tattooing. The exotic story of Irene told tattooing her to pass the time before he was killed by Native Americans, who is scared by her tattoos - released her unharmed.
Others followed at Nora and Irene's footsteps: employees left a great deal less, and a lady could earn per week at a time when about $ 22 per week was made by clerical workers. And even though we think of women as staying home then, tons of girls needed to work for wages. One of those girls, Anna Mae Burlingston, had been helping support her mother as a domestic servant when she met her husband, a tattooist named "Red" Gibbons. Shortly after they were married, she decided to change her match: she let Red tattoo her (with religious imagery - she was a devout Christian), and from 1919 she had been performing as Miss Artoria, traveling with her husband at sideshows that featured her on stage - and him functioning too. And she worked a long time: even with the rise of television (and the reduction in importance of "freaks" in live entertainment), Artoria worked in carnival sideshows until 1981.
There is no denying that part of a tattooed lady's appeal is her sex appeal. The stories of pain and danger, along with the opportunity to check at skin than ordinary society might let, were irresistible. But female audiences were also drawn to the ladies - who had been, after all, a lot like them. Tales comprised references to morals of these women and the behavior. In the end, tattoos were still regarded as racy - as late as 1955, an editor of a sociology anthology composed that "most tattooed women are prostitutes." Not that they were: many were like the remainder of the girls, taking care of kids and husbands also.
But women had taken control over their bodies, which came with a few chance of isolation. Lady Viola (born Ethel Martin at 1898) obtained herself tattooed(with images of people she admired) when her first marriage ended. She worked - as "The Most Beautiful Tattooed Lady in the World" - until she retired in 1932 to increase nine kids with her second husband. After he died in 1969, she moved back out on the road to raise money and never to be lonely. But later, when she died, there was no mention in her obituary of her profession as a tattooed lady - her fellow churchgoers never understood. Was tattooing still taboo, but working in a circus sideshow would have seemed seedy by then.
Tattoos also carried connotations of class - they were seen as adornments of the class. Even if society women had them (and they did), the stigma(!) Was that they were vulgar. While the tattooed women were given exotic tales that frequently included birth, they had been really working-class girls who chose to have a chance - a significant one - and get paid over their sisters. 1 lady - Betty Broadbent - was quoted as saying she regretted getting her first tattoo. Now I'm convinced she did not repent Everything - she had been among the tattooed ladies that are more powerful - but once they went in, there was.
And it is not completely different now though a lot more girls are receiving tattoos: there is a class divide within the world between who does not and who has job that is good. And while business legend Lyle Tuttle credits women's liberation with the newest renaissance in tattoo art, there's still some split between those women that have a discreet surprise (or much more) and people who've gone full-force into decoration. The chance to be an expert lady may have finished because a lot of girls are receiving designs inked in their skin but today tattooed ladies work in jobs. So if we can't imagine their being abducted to the islands of the South Seas to get everything that ink, we know that they won't be moving directly anytime soon.
Most of us know for the ideal pair of women shoes can be time-consuming looking! If they think that they have big feet and some girls can feel embarrassed. But lots of girls have bigger in the united kingdom and size 8, and with more High Street ladies shoes shops stocking size 9's it proves that it is quite normal! And you can bet since they can do to you, that your feet will likely not look as big to everybody.
So try not to worry about your shoe size, as there are designs and fashions for folks of all shapes and sizes, and remember that lots of famous and beautiful girls have big feet, believe Uma Thurman, Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet, who all have size 9 and!
If you're tall, your nice big feet will look absolutely in proportion with your body anyhow so you shouldn't have any problems with them, they're there to help you balance; which you will need if you are going to be dancing the night away! If you are not so tall, or you only wish to make your feet look smallerthere are tried and tested suggestions that will help you choose the right shoes to do exactly this.
High Heels or Flats?
Wearing sneakers with a heel will always make your feet look shorter as transferring the foot away from being flat on the ground steels some length. But this doesn't mean that you have to balance like a ballerina on stilettos, you can opt for moderate heels for comfort, and walk down this street with catwalk assurance!
Pointy, Round or Square toes?
If you would like to make your feet look shorter, unfortunately sneakers aren't our best friends, as the piece of shoe in the point may add a lot of extra length. Instead go for a rounded toe , or a timeless square; such as the classic ladies apartments - pumps - which comes all year round, in all colours and designs conceivable. Simply remember to get shoes which are cut higher up the foot; as too much 'toe cleavage" can elongate the Appearance of them
What about colors?
In the way we use colours to define body shape with clothes out, it's true that colored shoes can help our small tootsies look smaller. So ditch those shades and why not try sexy shades of reds, blues, greys and greens as well as the black and brown.
Showing a bit of flesh;)
Thin strappy shoes that reveal lots of your foot will make it appear bigger try T-bars or peep feet. If you try gladiator sandals with straps across the front to create width must have straps afterward the wider the better, and subsequently make the length appear shorter.
Purchase the perfect size shoes!
The main thing you have to do is to get your feet measured and purchase the ideal size footwear - do not go squeezing your feet into shoes that are too small since it makes you feel better about your feet. This will look ten times worse if your feet are spilling out of the sides, and you're currently hobbling about and can not stand up tall and confident because of the pain! Learning is the best way make certain you don't do any harm and end up with painful bunions, and to feel great about yourself.
