Did you know: The village of Grosmont in North Yorkshire was originally named Tunnel? 🚂 Grosmont Co-operative Society Ltd, founded in 1867, is the oldest independent retail co-operative in the UK. The building occupied by the Co-op and the Post Office was formerly known as the Tunnel Inn and had stables for the horses that worked the early Whitby & Pickering Railway, before the days of steam. 🚂 In 1963 the railway line to Pickering closed but was reopened by volunteers as the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in 1973.
