Spoilers for Slay the Princess’ endgame below the cut.
I just love love love Shifty’s design so much! She captures that “eldritch” feeling without being a classic Lovecraftian “eyeballs n’ tentacles” sort of design. Like, your brain can just barely wrap itself around the concept of “someone who is made of an infinite fractal of someones existing simultaneously,” but then you get into the fact that all those “someones” are not only constantly changing but also all exist in potentia within each other and throughout the Shifting Mound’s being as a whole…woah!
It also touches on something I’ve been thinking about in the context of Hindu artistic depictions of divinities with multiple incarnations, along with one of my favorite cubist paintings by Marcel Duchamp, “Nude Descending A Staircase No. 2.” I think art depicting an entity with multiple faces or limbs, especially in the context of divinity, isn’t just about a god literally having twenty heads or a million arms. It’s the artists’s attempt to capture a being who exists in several contradictory states simultaneously, or whose existence spans across dimensions of space and time humans can’t even conceive of, much less try to capture in a drawing bound by artistic conventions founded in the finite.
Duchamp’s “Nude Descending Staircase” depicts its subject as a centipede-like figure with many legs because it’s attempting to depict all possible states of the subject in motion simultaneously. The subject is at once animated into frames to give it the illusion of motion, and yet is also a static image comprising a series of static images of a body in motion. The painting depicts a mortal body instead of a divine one, but the concept of “multiple states of existence simultaneously” feels similar.
Both are attempts to capture something that by its nature cannot be captured, whether that’s the passage of time or the true form of the infinite. It’s incredible and a little disorienting to try to wrap my head around it. It’s the same feeling I get when I look at Shifty’s final design.

Elvis Fuckin’ Christ
If you listen to any of these go with Naked Girl- It’s about falling in lust with the cubist Duchamp painting “Nude descending a staircase” and I’m obsessed with it

Gjon Mili Nude Descending Staircase
Born in 1904 in Albania, Mili moved to America in 1923. He trained as an engineer and was self-taught in photography. He is most famous for his images that captured Picasso drawing with light.
Mili attended MIT shortly after he moved to America, where worked with Professor Harold Edgerton utilizing electronic flash to refine strobe photography. Since the late 1930s, he used a rapid-firing sequence technique in his photography, which allowed him to catch multiple images in a single frame. His photographs of dance, athletics, and musical and theatrical performances were then able to show the graceful flow of movement too rapid for the naked eye to distinguish. In 1939, Mili became a freelance photographer working for LIFE.
