As emissões de dióxido de carbono (CO2) na Amazónia brasileira duplicaram em 2019 e 2020, os primeiros dois anos do mandato do ex-presidente Jair Bolsonaro, quando a desflorestação atingiu o ponto mais alto, segundo um estudo divulgado.

Os cientistas demonstraram que a maior floresta tropical do mundo, vital para conter o aquecimento global, já começou a libertar mais CO2 do que aquele que absorve, aproximando-se de um “ponto sem retorno” que a faria transformar-se numa savana.

Usando amostras de ar recolhidas durante sobrevoos na floresta, os investigadores mostraram que as emissões na Amazónia caíram de uma média de 240 milhões de toneladas de 2010 a 2018 para 440 milhões em 2019 (+83%) e 520 milhões em 2020 (+117%). A média destes dois anos é o dobro da dos oito anos anteriores.

A investigação científica, publicado na revista Nature, foi conduzida por uma equipa do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), a agência espacial brasileira. Essa mesma equipa foi uma das primeiras a detetar que a Amazónia liberava mais carbono do que absorvia, numg outro estudo publicado na Nature, em 2021.

Os investigadores observaram que o desflorestamento na Amazónia brasileira (cerca de 60% da floresta tropical sul-americana, que abrange nove países) aumentou 80% em 2019 e 2020, em comparação com a média do período 2010-2018.

O INPE também observou um aumento de 14% nas áreas queimadas em 2019 e 42% em 2020.

Segundo os autores do estudo, esses números mostram os efeitos do desmantelamento dos órgãos públicos de proteção ambiental durante o mandato de Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022).

Esses órgãos “pararam de aplicar multas ou confiscar terras onde foram constatadas infrações ambientais”, disse Luciana Gatti, autora principal do estudo.

No Brasil, quase um quinto da floresta tropical foi desflorestada, deixando espaço principalmente para terras agrícolas ou pastagens para gado.

O setor agrícola é um dos motores de crescimento do maior país da América Latina, que exporta massivamente soja e carne bovina para todo o mundo.

“O mundo quer carne barata, soja barata para alimentar o gado, por isso também a floresta está sendo destruída”, lamenta Luciana Gatti.

O Presidente brasileiro, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, que sucedeu a Jair Bolsonaro em janeiro, prometeu que o Brasil estava de volta na luta contra as mudanças climáticas.

Nos primeiros sete meses de seu mandato, o desmatamento na Amazónia caiu 42,5% em relação ao mesmo período do ano passado (janeiro-julho).

Farey Sequence and Irrational Approximations

My recent thoughts have wandered away from Heron’s Algorithm onto Farey Sequence when I noticed that both 7/5 and 17/12 show up quickly when calculating the square root of two as a number between 1 and 2. Normally, the Farey Sequence finds fractions between 0 and 1 but it can find fractions between any two rational numbers (fractions), even numbers greater than 1. What’s so exciting about this sequence is that the numbers found are always in their most reduced form and so you never need to use GCD and reduce fractions. Which is a big resource hog for some algorithms. Starting with Heron’s Algorithm, I will guess that the square root of two (Num is 2) is 2/1 or my Numerator Guess is 2 and my Denominator Guess is 1 Num = 2 NumG = 2 NumD = 1 When solving for the first iteration of Heron’s Algorithm, we take the Guess and Add the Number (or Num is 2) and multiply the inverse of the guess and then take the average of the two, keeping the part in fraction form, we can solve for common denominators and we get the answer 3/2 or NumG is 3 and NumD is 2

Take 3/2 as the next guess and you get the following

WIth the Farey Sequence we start with two guesses. The first is lower than our target number, we guess 1 is lower than the square root of 2. The second guess is 2, we know that 2 is larger than the square root of two. Then we add the numerators to get a new numerator and we add both denominators to get a new denominator. This is sometimes called  Farey Addition. Num = 2 N1 = 1 D1 = 1 N2 = 2 D2 = 1

This yields a familiar result, same as Heron’s Algorithm but just a coincidence for this particular solution to find the square root of two. Since 9/4 is greater than 2 we say that this new guess takes the place of our N2 and D2 variables Num = 2 N1 = 1 D1 = 1 N2 = 3 D2 = 2

Now we have a new number and we find that Farey may take more iterations to get the same precision as Heron but if we keep at it, we may find the same answer. Since 16/9 is less than 2, we replace our N1 and D1 variables Num = 2 N1 = 4 D1 = 3 N2 = 3 D2 = 2

This is a very exciting answer since 14/10 is a well known approximation for the square root of two and 7/5 is just it’s reduced form. One way of looking at this is that Heron’s Algorithm just skips this approximation, even though it find 7/5 with a different starting guess, when 2 is your starting guess (or when 1 is your starting guess) you get better than this with 17/12 after two iterations. Now we are on the third iteration and since 49/25 is less than 2, this becomes our lower guess. Num = 2 N1 = 7 D1 = 5 N2 = 3 D2 = 2

Since 100/49 is greater than 2, we have a new upper guess.

Wow. This is very exciting. We used Farey’s Sequence to create an algorithm that finds the same exact result as our Heron’s Algorithm approximation. More research on the Farey Sequence shows that when you iterate to find increasingly larger denominators, you can actually calculate all the rational numbers between two points with denominators less than or equal to your limiting denominator. So on some level, it makes sense that Farey is just guess all rational numbers between two guesses and our extra step to square our guess and compare it to our original Num will help the sequence pick a new rational number that is increasingly closer than our last guess. What I really like about this algorithm over Heron’s Algorithm is that it will guess all rationals between two points which can find hidden gems like 7/5 and Heron’s Algorithm will often just jump to the next fraction of higher precision, missing out on these potentially rare and closer approximations.
