FTWT CCCLXXIX
from many moons ago, thanks, Ghosty. @zmwrites
handle (youth story supplemental)
“It was bound to happen. My scarf, my hot cocoa, I guess it’ll be my heart that goes next. I’m doomed to be the victim of thievery.”
Nyks and Cal dropped their hands so they could glare at R instead.
Evie took another sip of the cocoa and said primly, “You wish.”
R opened his mouth and then paused. “Actually, I don’t think I do. I don’t think I could handle you barging in and messing up the place. Please don’t steal my heart, like, ever.”
Evie crossed her heart. “I promise.”
tonight (youth story d0)
“Do you guys want to come over for dinner? My mother isn’t home and I don’t want to be lonely.”
R let Nyks play with his fingers while he perched next to him on the arm of the chair. “You sure you want all of us coming over? Would you rather just steal Nyks so you can cuddle him to sleep tonight?”
Daniel nodded, not even trying to deny it. “Yeah, but Evie loves eating my food, and if Nyks comes over he’ll tell her about it, so before I hear any complaining about favoritism, I’m formally inviting you first.”
“I accept,” Nyks said happily.
next (youth story d1)
“You know I don’t prefer when you buy me clothes,” Mark said, moving on to the next box so he could judge the mentioned shirt on fair terms.
“But I also know that you’ll wear them anyway, and I can’t help it. Buying clothes for my friends is one of my love languages.”
Mark found the shirt and ran his fingers over the fabric. It was soft, and the print was subtle. But it was blue, and bright, and Mark was unaccustomed to wearing such shades. “This is a Nyks shirt.”
Daniel sighed. “Yeah. He picked it out.”
Oh. That was different then.
personal (youth story d0)
It didn’t help that the confession had been delivered in such a profoundly confusing way, at once arrogant and apologetic.
“I was just a person to you, I didn’t matter, and that stung, so I decided I despise you and you let me, but your cooperation in this feud is no excuse for my absolutely horrid behavior, using you as my personal punching bag, so for all of it, for every terrible insinuation and every fight, I am so sorry.”
And then R had fallen silent, his own hands stuck in his pockets and gaze occasionally flitting to the side, but expression resolute as he waiting patiently for Mark to form some kind of response. But Mark had nothing to say. Not because he wasn’t sorry himself, but because sheer amount of visceral, undisguised emotion radiating outward from R’s entire being was intimidating, horrifying. Mark had never wished to see R like this, open and hurting.
change (youth story supplemental)
His fingers rub at one of the buttons. Roland licks his thumb afterward. The lemonade was perfectly made, too. Callum has long since mastered the art of refreshing summer drinks, and his lemonade is no exception.
“Maybe I should keep this on and smell sweet all day.” He turns around in time for Callum to throw a damp towel at him. It lands neatly on his head. “Thanks?”
“For the stickiness,” his brother clarifies, his smile goofy and wide. “Just wipe your face and change your shirt. You can’t drink lemonade through your skin even if you try really hard.”
Roland scrubs at his chin. “How did you know that was what I was thinking?”
rise
call (continuing on from the above)
Callum places his hands on his hips, balanced on one leg with the lemonade spill beside him, soaking into another kitchen towel. “I know everything.”
“You’re a dirty sneak, Caldridge, get out of my head.”
“Call me by my proper name and I’ll consider it.”
Roland tosses the towel back and it lands in a heap with the others. “Your name is Cal,” he says, words floating softly in the air.
Cal continues smiling, brighter than the day outside. “And yours is R.”
proud (youth story supplemental)
Cal stood next to Nyks, less bundled and also less spellbound, but watching Nyks was almost as fun. Even if Cal was the youngest of the group, Nyks was still someone he could feel protective of and care for greatly. The absolute delight all over Nyks’ face was making Cal’s heart thump with proud, fond beats.
“You’re adorable.”
Nyks stopped gazing upward to glance at Cal, still delighted while also cutely confused. “You can’t say that, you’re the baby.”
“Do I not have eyes?” Cal shoved his hands in his pockets and leaned his face in closer. “I think I do. And I’m pretty sure they’re looking at an adorable Nyks right now.”
“Look,” Nyks said, getting a little disgruntled now.
“I am.” But Cal was smiling so sweetly that Nyks would’ve had to bite his tongue to make himself feel actual disappointment.
I behoove you to find answer, allow, admit, ache. BONUS: alleviate, askew. @cwritesfiction @the-orangeauthor @writing-with-melon @flock-from-the-void @emelkae OR ANYBODY (or nobody, if you don't feel like it)

"Daniel has tried to teach me about memes and I don't think I did it right but I had Jae help me because he's better at art things and he also doesn't think I did it right, but he also also doesn't think I met a spirit in a forest, so whatever. I'm very happy Aspen is doing well. I wanted to enclose a sprig of rosemary here for them, but I lost it. Maybe they can grow some rosemary themselves. It smells nice. Love, Nyks."

welp, had to stop writing rival potion shops so Aspen could properly respond to this:

The Pandemic : Safehouse & The New Normal
As we know, all good things must come to an end. Despite the positive growth of Safehouse, the pandemic has affected Safehouse badly. They are struggling to sustain to pay for rent and operational costs. But like everybody else they took measures to keep Safehouse alive.
The First MCO
When the government announced the first MCO back in March all plans for future events and showcases by Safehouse had to be cancelled. Struggling for the economy, Safehouse decided to take some measure for them to be able to sustain and keep the place alive. Below are the statements released by Safehouse in March
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the world was still in Crisis with the pandemic around, Safehouse decided to shift their operations online by making an Online Music Event by livestream! I had the honor to help them set up and even Play music as “Tobu” on their first episode of the livestream.
The first ever Safehouse live session with Orang Malaya, Nyk, Midnight Fusic and ME “From The Comfort Of Ur Home” this was their first attempt at shifting live events online. This was a free live stream but they opened up donation links for people to donate and help them sustain and pay the artists. They will host this every weekend with different artists until the end of MCO.
Tumblr media
Aside from hosting livestream events, they are still struggling and barely making any money to sustain. To further generate some income to survive they also setup and organize online workshops! Again I’m honored to also partner with safehouse on one of the workshops.
Tumblr media
Post MCO
The situation post MCO is not any better but they were allowed to operate daily as a cafe or hangout spot with specific SOP and limited crowd. As a measure to recover economically they did host few physical events with a really limited amount of pax at a time. “Gerak Gerai” was one of the events hosted post MCO, there’s food, some music and also arts and crafts being sold by selected vendors at safehouse.
Below are the SOP applied during events after MCO at safehouse.

Initiative To Recover
In times of crisis, maybe all you can do is ask for help from the community around you.  As things are still so shaky and uncertain for our non- (but to them, incredibly) essential service, they kickstarted a relief campaign for Safehouse - Save House. This campaign features 6 different initiatives to stimulate business for their  organisation throughout the remainder of the year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lot has been done in an attempt to further grow and recover, but things are not as easy as it seems. I really hope the future of Safehouse is secure after all their tireless efforts. Shifting to a new normal era is never easy, the fact that being independent creatives in Malaysia is hard even before the pandemic. Just imagine the damage after the pandemic hit. This is why a platform like Safehouse is important to our Creative Communities, this is for the voices of the unheard, the underdogs and the ones who are just starting. To further continue below is a quick interview I did with one of the people behind Safehouse Farhan Fauzi. So check it out below
youtube
Safehouse definitely a safe space for creatives to express themselves and maybe just to do stuff! Save Safehouse by supporting them https://www.instagram.com/safehouse.kl

The NBA All-Star Team is a social construct
Tumblr media
We have that and more in Wednesday’s NBA newsletter.
The list of 2018 NBA All-Stars was completed on Tuesday as the league announced the coaches’ choices for reserves. The coaches got 13 of the 14 picks right, by my count. Congratulations to them.
Those who believe they deserved recognition and did not receive it, and teammates of those who those teammates believe would appreciate some public anger on their behalf, complained about the injustices, of course. In some ways, this spectacle is the true All-Star Game. We listed seven real snubs; I would argue only Paul George and Andre Drummond truly meet snub criteria. Everyone else was a bit of a stretch compared to who actually made the team.
Would you believe that fans of players not only snubbed from the All-Star roster but snubbed from the snub lists are up in arms? This is how constructivist the NBA has gotten: we are creating lists of those disrespected by the people nominally in the role of suggesting who was disrespected by official voters. There is a conventional wisdom (fans of the twice-snubbed) challenging the conventional wisdom (we who create snub lists for almighty content) challenging the social construct of the All-Star rosters.
The NBA is so meta sometimes. I love it.
Scores Galore ...
SAC 105, ORL 99 BKN 108, OKC 109 CLE 102, SAS 114 NYK 112, GSW 123 BOS 107, LAL 108
... And So Much More
I want to commend Marcus Smart on his growth mindset on display at the end of Lakers-Celtics. Smart, shooting 35 percent from the field this season and a career 29 percent three-point shooter, brought the ball up full court down one with seconds remaining, looking off open teammates, to fire a three off the bounce. This one rimmed out. But that commitment to taking low-percentage shots despite all evidence suggesting he should not shows real courage, dedication to personal growth, and mental strength. Kudos.
Whoa buddy, big Thunder comeback and a Russell Westbrook game-winner.
The Cavaliers got trucked again. You can tell these dudes are simmering because Uncle Jeff Green had a vicious dunk and no Cavs reacted. Ty Lue has promised a mysterious lineup change before Cleveland next plays on Friday. All indications are that the Cavs will soon finish a trade bringing George Hill to town. Paul Flannery has six ways the team can fix itself. (When we considered all the ways the Cavaliers could fix their season and maybe even challenge the Warriors, did anyone consider “enter extended trade conversations with the Sacramento Kings” as a game-changing option?)
LeBron became the youngest player -- and only seventh ever -- to score 30,000 points. He’s the only guy in NBA history with 30,000 points, 7,000 rebounds, and 7,000 assists. (He already has more than 8,000 rebounds and will have 8,000 assists by the season’s end. There’s a non-zero chance he could have 40K-10K-10K by his career’s end, assuming his career ever ends.)
The new Miami Vice uniforms are maybe the greatest uniforms in sports history. They are responsible for global warming.
Zito Madu on Gregg Popovich’s greatness and the art of compromise.
Kobe is nominated for an Oscar.
Why the Bucks fired Jason Kidd. Was Kidd’s time in Milwaukee at all helpful to the Bucks? What does the team do now?
Kevin Durant got ejected for arguing calls again. That’s the fourth time this season. No one has been ejected more than four times since Larry Sanders had five goodbyes in 2012-13.
Is Memphis really ready for a full-on rebuild?
Assessing the path to the NBA Finals for the Warriors.
Be excellent to each other.

10 Albums That Made A Lasting Impression During Your Teenage Years
I lived my Teen years (13-19) right in the middle of the Aughts, 2002 through 2008. That was an interesting time for music. Emo revival was just starting and Hardcore bands of the 90′s were starting to figure out what came next for them. I’m sure pop music was doing interesting things, but I was adamantly opposed to pop music as teenage, so there won’t be much of that.
The only Rule™ for this list (because lists need rules), is to use only one Album per Artist/Band. I will also try to go chronologically, but if you’re playing along at home, you make your list however you want. The “Chronogality” (that’s a world, don’t look it up) might get a bit skewed because, as I previously mentioned, I tended to shy away from popular music, so some of the albums didn’t come out during this time frame, it’s just when I discovered them.
On with the list!
2002
Gorillaz - S/T (2001)
Tumblr media
Okay, so right out the gate I’m cheating. The brainchild of musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett came out just before I was a teen in 2001. But the virtual band consisting of 2-D, Murdoc, Russel, and Noodle illustrated by Hewlett was one of the first bands I discovered for myself. And I didn’t discover it until it had been out for a while.
Largely to do with their interactive flash animated website and bizarre music videos, their music and artistic style largely influenced my own art and led me to discover Tank Girl, Hewletts comic book series.
You might be thinking “Didn’t they say they didn’t listen to pop music? Their first pick is a pop group, what’s going on here?” To which I remind you I said there wouldn’t be much of that, not none at all. This was also “Phase 1″ of the Gorillaz master plan, entitled Celebrity Take Down, so that resonated with me. Also, the Gorillaz may enjoy some commercial success, but at this point they were still largely an indie group, collaborating with Hip Hop artists, producers, and indie rappers (Kid Koala, Dan the Automator, and Del the Funky Homosapien respectively). Also, revisiting this album later on led me to discover Del’s other project Deltron 3030.
2003
AFI - Sing the Sorrow (2003)
Tumblr media
2003 was the year I discovered the color black, and I’ve never worn another color since (exaggeration, but not by much). This is also when I started to struggle with depression and other feelings and the goth-punk songs written by singer Davey Havok, bassist Hunter Burgan, guitarist Jade Puget, and drummer Adam Carson spoke to my early teen angst.
My introduction to AFI came from seeing the video for Girls Not Grey on the music channel Fuse (formally Much Music). I then probably pirated the music, because it was the 00′s, but I did also eventually buy a copy of the Album. This was also the first commercially successful for harcore-group-turned-goth band AFireInside.
AFI was the group that bonded my first real best friend and I together. We were both obsessed with the album, and we were determined to start a band (which we did and it was terrible). Together we worked our way through their back catalog and eventually discovered punk and hardcore music.
Minor Threat - Out of Step (1983)
Tumblr media
After listening to Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes by AFI and learning of the existence of Hardcore music, it wasn’t long before I discovered the “Big Three” of 80′s hardcore punk music: Black Flag, Bad Brains, and Minor Threat.
The icon art of Raymond Pettibon for Black Flag is still something that influences my art and Bad Brains influences many of my favorite bands and I appreciate them much more today, but Minor Threat’s anger is something that really resonated with me at the time. They definitely shaped the sound of the next band I was in, which was only a little better of an attempt than my first band.
Strangely enough, the Straight Edge mentality that is extremely prevalent throughout Minor Threats music never really took hold on me, but their other messages were clear to me, we’re outsiders and we’re taking a stand for what we believe in.
2004
My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004)
Tumblr media
After my band broke up, I got pretty sick of the monotony of 80’s hardcore music (get over it, it’s boring). I was still pretty goth, even if I was a hardcore kid, so the second album by MCR was the perfect pop-punk answer to my jaded hardcore sensibilities, with Gerard Way’s long black hair and makeup, guitarist Frank Iero & bassist Mikey Way’s emo-hair, and lead guitarist Ray Toro & drummer Matt Pelissier’s heavy riffs and fast tempo playing.
Three Cheers remains one of my favorite guilty pleasure albums. I got made fun of a lot by my hardcore friends and ex-bandmates for liking them, but my lifelong friend Nyk and I would drive around (with my newly acquired license) and sing along to “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” at the top of our lungs. Sorry about outing you, Nyk.
The Blood Brothers - Crimes (2004)
Tumblr media
After cleansing my hardcore pallet with emo music, I discovered The Blood Brothers seminal album Crimes. It was a perfect mix of the hardcore music I had started my teens with and the more theatrical emo music. Jordan Blilie’s soulful crooning and shrill scream and Johnny Whitney, whose voice has been described as “a child being tortured”, battle over lead vocal duties with Cody Votolato, Mark Gajadhar, and Morgan Henderson rounding out the instrumentalists (they all play multiple instruments), The Blood Brothers are a force to be reckoned with.
I didn’t know hardcore music could sound like this. I learned people called it “post-hardcore” usually lower case like that. The Blood Brothers and the label they were on, Three One G, led me to many other bands that I loved.
I’m pretty proud to say that between 2004 and 2007 when they broke up, I never missed a show when they came to town. Their live performances were extremely energetic. You could feel the electricity in the air.
2005
Modern Life Is War - My Love, My Way (2003)
Tumblr media
In 2005 MLIW released the album Witness, which is a fantastic album and I contemplated putting it on here instead, but in anticipation of the new album coming out I listened My Love fairly constantly. My hardcore friends were already fans of Modern Life, but it wasn’t until 2005 that I discovered them.
It’s hard to say how important My Love, My Way is to me without sounding cliche, but this album honestly saved my life. I had been struggling with my depression and Jeff Eaton told me it’s okay, I am too, but we’ll get through this. I’ll let the lyrics speak for themselves.
“We’ve been to the edge and we know what it’s like to want to die, and that’s something we won’t glorify. We’ll leave those miserable times behind. How far can I go? I’m rising from the depths of my own hell. I don’t need another tragic tale, I need the strength to walk the other way. I found conviction in my ever changing mind. I grew up tied down and bleeding on the inside, but I know I was a victim of my own device, and I want to live to see a brand new life.”
Modern Life Is War is another band that I went to every show I could. Even driving to Marshalltown, Iowa to see their Farewell Show. Their breakup didn’t last long as they got back together in 2013 to release another album and play more shows. They are still going strong now.
2006
Tegan and Sara - So Jealous (2006)
Tumblr media
Sisters Sara and Tegan Quinn playing heartfelt indie songs about break-ups is exactly what I needed in 2006 when my first serious partner dumped me. Even listening to it now as I write this, it’s bringing up memories of feeling heartbroken and that every song is specifically about you.
Where do you go with your broken heart in tow? How do you know when to let go? Where does the good go??
Everyone who has experienced love and a hard break-up should listen to this album. Do that and tell me it’s not perfect.
Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica (2000)
Tumblr media
2006-2007 was my senior year of high school, and I was lucky enough to have a pretty incredible art program at my school. I had teachers who were actually working artists and forced us as students to create better and better art. They treated us like artists and it was the first time I felt like an adult was giving me any respect.
My studio art teacher was a huge fan of Modest Mouse and would play their music during class. This was the golden age of the iPod, so I soon had Good News For People Who Love Bad News and The Moon & Antarctica and listened to it even while not in class. It was also one of the first Vinyl albums I ever bought.
Twangy guitars playing over Isaac Brock’s strange voice singing about the concept of being an asshole and that everyone has the capability of fucking you over. What’s not to love? And the deeply critical song “A Different City” about the escapism of moving away and the terrifying reality of failing. A great song to listen to when you’re making your plans to move out on your own for the first time.
2007
Against Me! - Searching For A Former Clarity (2005)
Tumblr media
After graduating high school with limited interest in attending college, my parents bought me a laptop as incentive to apply. I did and went for about one semester before dropping out, but now I had my own computer, so that was a pretty good trade off.
I ended up putting three AM! Albums and one Mischief Brew album on my computer and I listened to them constantly. I didn’t have internet access at my house during 2007 so that was the only music I had. Against Me! became my favorite band. Laura Jane Grace’s take on punk-rock and anarchy shaped my worldview.
I didn’t realize then why Laura’s music was so important to me beyond the anarchist politics until years later in 2012 when she came out as a transgender woman. In 2007 I was starting to understand where so much of my depression was coming from. So listening to Against Me! songs about dealing with the same issues and feeling was a great feeling of commiseration.
Looking back now, the songs only make more sense. Even if I didn’t know it at the time Against Me! was speaking to me about deeply personal issues, even if subconsciously.
2008
the Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride (2008)
Tumblr media
The album that introduced me to the Mountain Goats! I’m really not that cool, so I don’t really know about awesome people like John Darnielle and how he’s been writing music since I was 5. But I heared the song Heretic Pride on the indie radio station and instantly fell in love with them.
Heretic Pride is not my favorite Mountain Goats album (that would be Tallahassee) but it’s the first one I heard at 19 years old and their literary songs have made me strive to make my own writing better.
It’s also the album that I tried to show to my future partner (we started dating in 2009) to try and impress her. She, of course, was a fan already because she’s much cooler than I am. She then proceeded to show me the extensive discography of the Mountain Goats (15 albums) and the rest of the Modest Mouse catalog just for good measure.
Well, there’s my 10 Albums. There are a few more I would like to add if I could pick more than ten. Like Dumby by Portishead, De-Loused in the Comatorium by The Mars Volta, and Pass The Flask by The Bled all squished in there somewhere. But I won’t cheat and have a list of 13 albums. That would be wrong...

The Art of Hot Glass Evaluation from Proffesor Patricia Bennett
The January term glass class was a new experience for me. Though I have taught glass classes before, the length and intensity of this class was unusual. Many of the students who did not have experience with glass had a difficult time maintaining focus for the entire two weeks. We discussed how it might be better to spread it out over the semester as a non-credited class.
Nyk Lifson was one of the students that had not worked with glass before. They were able to maintain their focus and enthusiasm throughout the course. Nyk worked hard and was determined to pick up certain techniques. They were very focused on working with tubing and color, both rather difficult to master. Even given that, Nyk made good progress in the class. They also tried many of the solid working techniques that were demonstrated. Nyk got pretty good at making pendants as well as working the tubing by pulling points and learning how to heat the glass. I was impressed by Nyk’s determination.
It was great to have Nykin the glass class. They worked hard and came away with several glass skills. I hope to see them in the Lemelson Center next semester.
Cumulative Skills
Nyk worked independently on the torch in class while I was helping other people.
Nyk was a great student in the glass class.

oc's as tens but tag
I guess it's time to invent a new tag game.
rules: list your ocs as "tens but" to give us a not at all comprehensive scope of their characters
I'm doing youth story! because that's how this idea popped into my brain.
R - he's a ten but he also thinks he is
Bell - she's a ten but she will quote poetry at any opportunity
Cal - he's a ten but he will have anxiety about you not wearing a coat in cold weather
Evie - she's a ten but she can see all your repressed memories
Daniel - he's a ten but he puts cinnamon in his hot chocolate and honey in his coffee
Irina - she's a ten but she'll comment snide things about your fashion sense without saying a word
Mark - he's a ten but he appears to attract bruises like they're gold star stickers
Jae - he's a ten but he'll answer your questions in a language you don't speak
Savannah - she's a ten but she'll announce your feelings to the room if she's pissed at you
Nyks - he's a ten but he's sometimes not all there which is really unfortunate for hugs
