Since it's less than one month until Tales of Festival 2023, I want to share one of my most favorite moments in Tales of Festival related to Zestiria lol.
It's the telephone game in Tales of Festival 2018, but only the Team C (Zestiria & Berseria) part. In order of the telephone game, the team consists of Satou Rina (Velvet Crowe - Tales of Berseria), Tsuda Kenjirou (Zaveid - Tales of Zestiria), Ohsaka Ryouta (Mikleo - Tales of Zestiria), and Kimura Ryouhei (Sorey - Tales of Zestiria).
By the way, this is the perfume referenced in the video:

Hi IX!!! I was hoping you could help me with something please 🙏
Where in the manga do Miyuki’s teammates call him a tanuki? I’m pretty sure they never said it in the anime (but I’m suffering from early senility so I could be wrong).
I was reading the wiki and according to it, the tanuki nickname was only mentioned in the guidebook when Eijun was trying to think up a name for Miyuki. For some reason this is disappointing information lololol
Hm. In all honesty, I don’t know if they do. In the first act, there’s no instance of it; it’s only mentioned in the guidebook. If ever it’s mentioned in the manga, it’d be in Act II, but I personally cannot remember if they ever do. (I could be wrong and I very much encourage someone to tell me if I am!! I’d love to know the chapter if it’s happened!!)
I believe it might be something that we were given with the guidebook and that the fandom ran with. Not to suggest it’s not canon, but I don’t believe it’s something we see in the manga either.
Here’s a translated sheet and notes from the guidebook (and the original below).

Tumblr media Tumblr media
source: https://twitter.com/opus_colors/
1) Q&A with Takise Kyo
Dark past (something one wants to forget or pretend it never happened)?
When I was a child, I cried because I wanted to keep a cat I picked up and brought home.
2) Takise Kyo - Ohsaka Ryota I’m really looking forward to seeing how the work will turn out, as it deals with works of arts that are drawn in a virtual space, and I’m sure that each character’s personality and emotions will be expressed in the pictures.
The main focus will be on how the strained relationship between Kazuya and Kyo will change, so I hope you’re looking forward to it.  Favorite color: I like bluish colors.

Things that went through my head while watching this episode:
--It's pointless for demons to fight each other… unless it's fun.
--Have we ever seen more joy on Nezuko's face? Maybe joy isn't the right word, but it's close, at least for a demon. I know we're getting more of Nezuko: Advanced in the swordsmith village, but I really wish we couldn't have gotten just a little bit more of her losing herself like this to drive home the point that, at her core, she is currently something different from human now, and for as long as she's not human, she'll run the risk of doing this again. Also, it would drive home just how hard she's always had to fight her demon nature, even if it did get easier once she freed herself from Muzan's control and unlocked the restorative powers of sleep.
--Speaking of Nezuko's powers, Daki's right, Nezuko is a but of a one-trick, two-trick pony using the same sloppy kicks and slashes all the time--she totally lacks finesse or conscious effort to improve in her fighting abilities. Rather, the abilities she comes up in the moment--exploding blood, and now regenerative abilities that put Daki's to shame, and hardened blood that saves her the trouble of her body part flying every which way--are things that her more of a gut reaction of what she wants in the moment. And, while there's other motivation behind it like wanting to protect her brother, what Nezuko wants most deeply and simply in those moments is violence. Rui? She wanted him to burn. And here, we see she wants to hurry up and get back in the fight--a fight which has now been more safely removed from where Tanjiro is--and she summoned back her form purely for the purpose of want to kick Daki again, really hard. And when Daki makes that's harder? Nezuko adjusts, again, so that she can kick her harder. Oh! Turns out stomping on her is pretty satisfying. Let's do more of this. Tanjiro who?
--I love how before Nezuko truly remembers the song--much less who she is--she is very slightly starting to calm down as she feels the memory of her mother (or least enough of a memory of her to welcome her ghost back, if that is the case. These poor Kamados have a such a busy afterlife) . Some fun things Hanae-san said in the Kimetsu Radio reaction to this episode were that Kuwashima-san (a veteran seiyuu who voices Kie) had to reign in her very skilled singing voice to make the lullaby more believable something a simple mother would sing to entertain a child, and Hanae's first recording session for Yuukaku-hen was the "singing" (thank goodness he didn't) of the lullaby as Nezuko is beating him up, as the animators/producers wanted to fit the scene to his performance and timing instead of the other way around. As for his timing, he considered it on a panel by panel basis, down to every whack and thump from Nezuko that interrupts him.
--Hey, Tanjiro, stop making promises you can't keep. You sure as hell haven't been able to keep Nezuko from getting hurt and having to fight. You said something similar to this right before Daki crashed the town.
--Speaking of promises he doesn't have the power to keep, I love Uzui laying into him about how he made such a brazen promise to Oyakata-sama about this not happening. It's doubly satisfying after having rewatched that recently.
--I love the scene of Daki whining and crying at Uzui so much that it spawned a feel-good fix-it AU, in Part 1 and Part 2.
--I love how when Gyutaro first made an appearance the fandom's collective response was, "His voice, I hate it!! …It's perfect."
--Because it is!!!!
--Excellent job, Ohsaka Ryota-san. After your career of voicing pretty boys, I hope you had the time of your life performing the most wretched a voice imaginable, yet still making us all fall hard for Gyutaro as a character. Good source material for his story, yes, but what really sold his anime adaptation for me is the cooing and affection in his voice not just for Daki, but even for teasing Tanjiro later.
--On that note, I love Daki's complexity. Aren't we all like her, at some level? "I did my best, but it didn't work, I'm done being a big girl, time to baby me?" We all have an inner Daki, she just blows it to demonic proportions.
--Then again, that's something that makes her such a foil to Nezuko, the other feature imouto of this episode: in the Taisho Secret, Tanjiro harps on how she was always so reasonable and patient and mature, even when she was hurting (which I guess makes her a good embodiment of the "don't you ever get tired of being nice" meme). Even though tiny!Nezuko indulges in getting Tanjiro's love and attention, as a human, she never hoarded Tanjiro for herself or expected him to do anything special for her. However, she and Tanjiro had a secure, loving family, whereas Ume & Gyutaro's enire worlds were each other. Now as demons, they take "unhealthy level of attachment" to a literal level.
--One thing that makes me curious is how often Gyutaro comes out and does anything, as it seems Daki doesn't frequently undergo anything as frustrating as Nezuko's fire or a Pillar chopping off her head. However, Gyutaro has eaten more Pillars than she has, and as the more powerful one, presumably done the larger share of killing the Demon Slayers who come into town. Sure, maybe Daki has to fish them out, but maybe there are a lot of times when it's more advantageous to just sick Gyutaro on somebody right away instead of blowing Daki's oiran cover. Also, perhaps earlier in their demon careers, Daki got beat up on more frequently so Gyutaro was more acively involved in beating bullies up, hence, why he got Muzan's attention.
--In the midst of this long and different night Tanjiro is already having, he's just so bright and happy to hear the sound of Inosuke's voice and that is heartwarming. And I just had to check against the manga, yup, Tanjiro is totally confused that Zenitsu seems to be asleep. He's got no idea. I love how, perhaps, all three of them have had no idea for all this time. Nezuko, though. Nezuko's witnessed it four months ago and I'll bet that scene plays in her dreams.
--Speaking of Power Napping, I love how Nezuko looks so little here, like the littlest she's been in this whole series???? She may as well be asleep on her mother's back again while being unable to stay awake to watch Dad perform Hinokami Kagura. I hope she's having good dreams about her mother.
--Finally, a doodle I made after this episode first aired:

Kenji/Tracey Sketchit. Shinomiya Natsuki. Kashuu Kiyomitsu. Kogarasumaru. Ikaruga Misumi.
These five are my comfort characters and I decided I wanted to make a short clip of excerpts of them singing. These are from their actual character songs, I did not cheat and choose any random songs their seiyuu sing. (Which is why Kogapapa's excerpt seems incomplete, because he sings the other half of the chorus with two others and I needed to focus on their solos.)
Songs chosen...
Minna de Arukou (originally performed by Satoshi, Kasumi, Takeshi and Kenji with Pikachu, Togepi, Rokon, Mariru and Fushigidane - Matsumoto Rica, Iizuka Mayumi, Ueda Yuji and Seki Tomokazu with Otani Ikue, Koroogi Satomi, Aikawa Rikako, Kanai Mika and Hayashibara Megumi) - Pokémon
Piyo-chan no Uta ( originally performed by Shinomiya Natsuki - Taniyama Kisho) - Uta no Prince-sama
Anata to Watashi to -Kashuu Kiyomitsu solo- (originally performed by Kashuu Kiyomitsu - Masuda Toshiki) - Touken Ranbu -ONLINE-
Medetashi Tsukurigoto (originally performed by Yamanbagiri Kunihiro, Shishiou and Kogarasumaru - Maeno Tomoaki, Ohsaka Ryota and Hoshi Soichiro) - Zoku Touken Ranbu -Hanamaru-
Ichi, Ni, Sankaku (originally performed by Ikaruga Misumi - Hirose Daisuke) - A3! - Act! Addict! Actors!

Chihayafuru 54: Who is there left now that can claim to know me well?
AKA. In which the former Queen reminded all of what she’s capable of.
[Previously: Arata gave Taichi advice on memorization mid-match and Taichi’s adorably awed face]
I really should have been more careful about what I wished for.
Bad bad Sudo-san, so misogynistic. Can’t wait to see Chi-chan handing you yo ass. Or Taichi, I’m not picky.
Yeah... next up against Sudo-san is Taichi.
I get it though, it really can’t go any other way. Fellow Shiranami members aside, anyone would also be a tough match-up. Haruka is a former Queen, Murao-kun had way too much experience under his belt and had been playing against Arata-kun for ages, and well, Arata is Arata. Would be fun to see Arata vs Taichi in an official match but that is probably too soon for now - like an premature final of sorts.
Tumblr media
“Can I make through a match with Sudo-san?”
Tumblr media
Taichi’s anxiety and wariness make for a sharp contrast with Chi-chan’s lack of awareness of her opponent and buoyancy in getting to play more karuta.
Tumblr media
Once again, Nishida tried to be the voice of reason and a stand-in coach for Chi-chan but it kinda backfired? lol
Tumblr media
Chi-chan’s reaction to Nishida’s revelation and words of counsel truly showed how much she had grown. Gone were the days when her game play would be affected by her opponents’ track record, like with Yumin and Megumi Ohsaka. What matters to her now is to play her karuta and enjoy karuta to the fullest.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the question on the tip of everyone’s tongue was how strong the former Queen is, and another for those in the know is whether she had returned to her former glory. The anticipation was almost palpable, as even the head of Suihoku Society exclaimed that no one wished to have Haruka as their opponent in a conversation with Yumin. And Nishida is not given to exaggeration, so someone who could surpass Shi-chan in terms of game sense is truly worth watching out for.
Tumblr media
The individual-turned-team tournament
Tumblr media
I absolutely love how exuberant Harada-sensei was - and why wouldn’t he be proud of all his treasured proteges making into the quarter-final stage?
Tumblr media
Like a general rousing the troops before a major battle, Harada-sensei sought to inspire fellow young Shiranami members with his infectious confidence and unshakeable self-assurance.
Tumblr media
All in a such a loud and assertive tone too, lmao.
Tumblr media
Would have made for a good intimidation tactic, had it not been for these battle-hardened veterans and their formidable charges.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Chi-chan was on cloud nine.
Tumblr media
Before the match began, the audience was far more interested in Haruka than Chi-chan, for obvious reasons. Our dear protagonist was viewed as no more than a capable player who could help them assess Haruka’s performance.
Tumblr media
Chi-chan of course had no idea of such expectations and she went into the game with no more than the usual desire to play her karuta.
Tumblr media
Much as Taichi would like to take heart in Chi-chan’s presence right by his side and the team spirit of Harada-sensei, he was also keenly aware of his own battle and the need to not let Sudo-san’s taunting get to him.
Tumblr media
The qualities of a sound
Without further ado, the reader recited the Naniwa Bay verse and the quarter-finals kicked off. All eyes (well, nearly all) were on the highly-anticipated match between Chi-chan and Haruka, and it was certainly the wise thing to do, though not quite for the reason the spectators had in mind.
Tumblr media
No-one could have thought that Chi-chan would take the first card right off the bat, with such decisiveness and surety in her movement.
Tumblr media
Rising to the challenge, she made use of her newly-gained grasp of low and high pitch from Yama-chan to seize the momentum.
“Maybe what we’ll be seeing today isn’t Inokuma Haruka’s comeback, but a new generation’s takeover!”
Tumblr media
Unlike Chi-chan, the former Queen was certainly more conscious of the crowd’s dimming interest in her and rising expectations for Chi-chan’s ascendance. But far from letting it affect her play, she seemed only more determined to assert her presence and reclaim her rightful place.
Tumblr media
Because that future, until which,
you say, you will “never forget”
is hard to rely on,
oh, if only today could be
the last day of my life!
In true Chihayafuru style, no poem is coincidental. The poet’s fear of being forgotten by her love resonated deeply with Haruka’s desire to not be dismissed and replaced by a new star, and the second verse’s desperate prayer echoed her perseverance to not give up on karuta after her pregnancy. As Coach Sakurazawa said, she could not be here had she not such enduring passion to come back to the game.
Tumblr media
“It is hard to discern the pitch for the “The” cards, yet she could hear it?”
Tumblr media
As befitting of a 4-time Queen, Haruka immediately picked up on what Chi-chan was trying to do and moved it up several notches.
Tumblr media
Haruka’s genius-like hearing was shown to be honed by her experience of many many matches and readers. Pitch is not the only quality of a sound that she could discern, for a sound has many colors.
“High and low, strong and weak, feminine and masculine, soft and sharp...
Whether the reader is from the east or the west...”
Tumblr media
The match heated up as Haruka finished her warm-up and got her hearing back to her usual competitive *read: insane* level. But that is not the only “trick” she has up her sleeve.
Tumblr media
Unlike most players, she does not move her cards to fill the gaps left behind by those that were read. The positioning of her cards does not change for the entirety of the match. I am still not sure as to what she would substantially gain from this unique play style, besides it being a lesser burden on memorization. Nonetheless, regardless of the rationale behind her strategy, Haruka was certainly living up to her reputation and more, convinced that she had yet to reach the peak of her abilities.
Tumblr media
The Shiranami Offensive
Tumblr media
Things were not looking exactly favorable for the other Shiranami members.  Their attacks were pushed back while their opponents were all taking the lead. Harada-sensei had the biggest card difference of 10, and Hiroshi was not faring much better against Arata and his insane acceleration speed. But the matches were far from a done deal, as the 4 Shiranami members had yet to give up on turning the tide of battle.
“I still don’t know much about the finer points of karuta but...”
Tumblr media
And though all eyes were on Chi-chan’s match and Haruka, one can always rest assured that there would always be a certain avid fan following Taichi’s progress at every step of the way.
Tumblr media
The game was doubtlessly arduous but if there’s anything, Taichi is no stranger to the sort of mind tricks employed by Sudo-san to confound and rattle his opponents. Even when he lost a card to Taichi, albeit by a hair, he still managed to put a demoralizing take on what happened by claiming that Taichi could not see exactly how things went down.
Tumblr media
Since this tactic did not work so well, Sudo-san lived up to his name by taking digs at Taichi’s lack of love life.
Tumblr media
oops.
Tumblr media
Taichi did not take it well. Nonetheless, true to Sumire’s assessment, he quickly recovered from the psychological attack and gathered himself together. The little voice of belittlement was conspicuously absent and he still retained enough composure to be aware of Sudo-san’s increasing fatigue (thanks to Nishida’s valiant effort to sap at his stamina!) and not be taken in by his aggressive act.
Tumblr media
Taichi’s balanced perspective of his opponent’s strength and weakness in this match helped him clear his head and be free from the usual self-doubt.
Tumblr media
And a calm and collected Taichi is one hell of a player.
Tumblr media
It was time for him to display what he had learnt from recent tournaments and the Fujisaki camp, including an upgrade to his movement speed and the tactic to cover multi-syllable cards with few unique syllables, taken straight from Emuro-senpai’s book.
Tumblr media
Sudo-san, he’s not the same Taichi that you met at Omi Jingu anymore.
Tumblr media
While Taichi was pushing himself, Chi-chan exploring the depth of sound, and Hiroshi holding on against Arata, Harada-sensei seized the spotlight with a loud and clear rally call, delivered in his usual style of intimidation.
“GOT THERE IN TIME!”
Tumblr media
He shouted “Got there in time!” after executing a swift and powerful turnabout that allowed him to grab his card after making a move at his opponent’s.
Tumblr media
While it’s true that Harada-sensei’s game etiquette was questionable in that instant, I absolutely love that he was still so energetic, at his age and after several games in a row, not to mention during such a tough game.
Tumblr media
Harada-sensei’s triumphant shout was a spontaneous move but it was just in time to lift the morale of his “troops”, a call to stay true to the Shiranami method.
Tumblr media
First to respond was Chi-chan, who pulled off yet another unexpected feat against the former Queen.
Tumblr media
Sliding a finger into the gap under Haruka’s hand, she managed to take a multi-syllable card that seemingly was already in Haruka’s grasp. But that’s not the only outrageous thing that she aimed for.
Tumblr media
“She’s sending ‘Chihayaburu’ to Inokuma’s side, despite her tight defense? Even if this is offensive style karuta, just how offensive can the Shiranami Society be?”
I absolutely love Suihoku coach’s aggressive commentary that is a constant dig against Shiranami Society. Nonetheless, while it is true that Chi-chan made a rather risky gamble in giving her best card to such a formidable opponent, it was not an act made in the heat of the moment.
Tumblr media
Pushing herself to the limits has always been Chi-chan’s creed in karuta. If she’s gonna “be greedy” and aim for the best, then she will need to face opponents head on and make use of all learning opportunities for self-improvement. That translates to not playing safe against a former Queen and sticking to her chosen style of card taking, no matter how unique the placement.
Tumblr media
Even Haruka could feel the mounting pressure exerted by Chi-chan...
Tumblr media
The moment of truth!
Tumblr media
Both of them were so fast (all I could catch of the animation is their blurred hands)! But unlike the stalemate 2 cards before “Chihayafuru”, there was no doubt as to who reached the card first.
Tumblr media
She did it!! The flames behind her are incredibly apt in representing her passion, all the more so given that she got the one card that Sakurazawa-sensei had never been able to take from Haruka, back in her competitive days.
Tumblr media
The other battles were far from decided as Hiroshi, Harada-sensei and Taichi did their best to wrestle control of the match from their opponents in their own ways. Hiroshi held on by the virtue of taking cards carefully and relearning the basics while coaching his merry band of karuta club kids. It’s sweet that the kids came to cheer for him and got a shout-out too (in Hiroshi’s mind LOL, not out loud a la Harada-sensei).
Tumblr media
Against Sudo-san’s cutthroat karuta, Taichi’s relaxation technique worked wonders in ensuring a clear focus on the cards themselves, prevent him from second-guessing himself and worrying about what his opponent might be up to.
Tumblr media
Among the four match-ups, it is likely that Taichi and Sudo-san are the pairing with the greatest knowledge and understanding of each other’s strength, mentally and physically. This makes for really interesting dynamics, as if they mirror each other. They were both acutely aware of the other’s growing fatigue, particularly after their fumble over a dead card. They ended up being fired up over the same thing - Retro’s victory in his class B final, as their game neared its closing. It would be interesting to see more interactions between these two after the match because difference in play style aside, they are more alike than expected.
Tumblr media
LOL, Harada-sensei looked so fierce here. He’s certainly not one to give up early or easily.
Tumblr media
I truly appreciate the show’s dedication to realism when it comes to portraying the trials of child-raising faced by Haruka and her husband. It’s not easy to keep an eye on a toddler and a baby at the same time, and I’m really curious as to how Haruka would handle her child’s presence in the thick of action. Would she be distracted or remain calm and cool?
Tumblr media
This episode wound down with shots of players making tenacious grabs for cards at the last stage of the game. It made for a very intense cliffhanger but as Chi-chan said, this four-on-four team match has been so much fun! All in all, that’s the kind of energy that only true lovers of karuta could manifest, and I can’t wait to see the outcomes of this team match!
Tumblr media
Thanks for reading and see you next episode!

Opus Colors Episode 1 Review: Perception Art Seems Cool
Here’s the review to one of the three animes I am watching this season. My first impressions? I feel like I have to see more to truly understand the story, but it’s not bad so far.
Tumblr media
From what I’m seeing, the anime is about Perception art, which is basically AR/VR type art. There is a school dedicated to it, which is where our three main protagonists attend.
I think Perception art is a cool concept in general. The way you can make stuff via AR/VR makes me wonder if it’ll be a thing in the future. However, my gripe is that the animation for the Perception art stuff can be a bit…weird? Like there are floating eggs at times but there are other instances of flowers and a wolf. Though, the little story with the masked boy was super cool and the best usage of perception art so far. If the anime keeps giving that sort of animation, I think this would be okay.
The first protagonist Kazuya Yamanashi is a Perception artist due to his parents’ influence. He stays in touch with his childhood friend Jun, but is distanced from the other one, Takise, who is two years older than him.
The school they attend is divided into two sections, Artists and Graders. Both sides are heavily hostile towards each other and it makes no sense to me. If you’re going to work together in the art industry, wouldn’t it be best to work together? I think that the school is going to be united by the end. Kazuya and Jun are Artists while Takise is a Grader, by the way.
There are a lot of characters that I can’t really keep track of. Hopefully, pairing them together will help me understand who they all are because a large cast from the get go is going to get messy if not done properly. The most jarring thing about the character designs is that all the characters HAVE THE EXACT SAME FACE! Just tweaking the eyes and changing the hair style won’t conceal these eyes of mine. I can see that they all suffer from same face syndrome. Gosh, am I going to be able to remember all these characters?
The voice cast is superb; it’s pretty much the reason why I wanted to watch and review this anime. Even if this anime turns out bad, I will enjoy it for the cast. For now, I can hear Yuma Uchida, Natsuki Hanae (though, he was a bit hard to decipher since his range for cute teen boys varies depending on the appearance), Ryota Ohsaka, Nobuhiko Okamoto and Daisuke Ono so far. I have to hear the others later on to see who they are voiced by.
The music so far seems generic. Though, the song used in the perception art portion was good. Other than that, the regular BGM are just there—not memorable at all.
For now, I’m probably going to write shorter reviews for this anime because there’s not much I can talk about since I don’t know anything right now. All I know is that the reason Kazuya and Takise had a falling out was due to an accident that caused Kazuya’s parents’ death. Yikes. There’s going to be angst in this anime? I’m never prepared for sudden angst.

From the Official World Guidance interview with Kimura Ryouhei (Sorey’s VA) and Ohsaka Ryouta (Mikleo’s VA).
Tumblr media
――Are there any scenes with Sorey and Mikleo’s interactions that stand out in your mind?
KIMURA: That they also fight normally. That stood out to me.
OHSAKA: Like in the Aqueduct.
KIMURA: Yeah! It’s still early in the game there so in that sense, it’s not surprising that they got into a fight. Sorey is fundamentally mild-mannered towards others, of course he will get angry at things he should get angry at, but this wasn’t the case here at all. They really fought like children and went their own separate ways, but they understood about each other, about what would happen afterwards. The amazing bond I felt there left a deep impression on me. I also thought that they were amazing, the both of them; they fought because they cared for each other.
OHSAKA: Even though what they do is different, what they see is the same, after all. Like, even before the final battle, “I’m not going to go into too much detail in particular here because I know everything about you.” That is true for both of them. Although it was short in terms of time, they shared a lot of things in their journey, they got to know each other even more, and in the end, they don’t need to say anything to understand each other. That kind of bond that feels like tacit understanding left a great impression on me, and I thought it was very like them.
――What did you think of Sorey’s decision to save the world by going to sleep?
KIMURA: The world will be saved, but it is a decision that will not please all of his friends. That is why I had hoped that Sorey, who knew about this, would come back. I believed that he would not betray that, that he would not make his friends sad.
OHSAKA: I think Sorey had thought about this and made his decision after much consideration, so Mikleo could not say anything to that either, or rather, he let him exactly because he wanted to believe in him. Mikleo also had a lot of trouble making up his mind himself, but I wonder if he eventually came to terms with that decision out of respect for Sorey’s feelings. Well, in the end, there’s a scene where Sorey seems to be back, so that’s good for him. I also like it that it had the same situation as the one at the beginning of their adventure.
