FADING GLORY: ON THE TRAIL OF JACK MORRISON
Olympia Shaw | July 6, 2015
Tumblr media
I remember the day Jack Morrison died. It was the day the world lost a hero.
Like other members of the so-called "Overwatch Generation," I spent my childhood looking up to Morrison. He taught me that heroes were real. He made me believe that even I could be one. When he died under mysterious circumstances six years ago, I felt as if a part of my childhood died with him.
The details about his death have always remained few and far between, a strange fact, given that he was such a public figure. Maybe that's why after all this time, I find myself looking back at Morrison's life and asking the big question: what really happened to the man who defined my generation?
Tumblr media
Traveling through rural Indiana, I find it easy to forget that a monumental figure like Jack Morrison came from such a tranquil, time-lost place. A sea of green and gold cornstalks stretches from horizon to horizon. There is no wind, no sound save the buzz of a few lonely insects. On the rare occasions when I cross paths with other living souls, they describe young Morrison in different ways. He was a rambunctious youth. A humble, salt-of-the-earth farmer's son. But these people all agree on one thing: Morrison was never destined to live out his days in the land of rolling plains and deep blue skies.
At eighteen, Morrison packed his bags and joined the military. He had planned to serve a brief stint in the armed forces and then return home to the family farm, but his work ethic and courage caught the eye of the military brass. Before long, he earned a coveted position in the government's controversial and still-classified (but widely acknowledged) "soldier enhancement program." Military scientists shaped Morrison and other inductees into the perfect soldiers, blessed with superhuman speed, strength, and agility.
Morrison and his fellow augmented soldiers would soon put their abilities to use with the advent of the Omnic Crisis. Across the globe, the omniums went rogue and churned out legions of militarized robots. The world reeled at the appearance of this new enemy. The omniums and their robot populations had originally been built to bolster manufacturing and create economic equality worldwide. Now, these marvels of modern science sought to overthrow the human race, posing one of the greatest threats to the survival of our species since the Cold War of the 20th century.
"Even I had my doubts about whether Overwatch would succeed, but Morrison never gave up hope. He didn't just meet our expectations for what Overwatch and its agents could achieve; he shattered them."
As governments tried and failed to neutralize the machines, the United Nations was busy forming an international task force called Overwatch. This small, experimental group would bring together the best and brightest from around the world to wage asymmetrical warfare against the robots. Overwatch's short list of prospective agents included two members of the soldier enhancement program: Morrison and Gabriel Reyes, a senior officer. Reyes, a hardened and highly respected veteran, grew up about as far from rustic Indiana as you could get—the sprawling urban melting pot of Los Angeles. Despite their differences, the two soldiers became friends. Their decision to join Overwatch together would change the world, for good and for bad.
Leadership of Overwatch fell to Reyes, but Morrison would have a greater impact on the group in the long term. He brought out the best in the people around him and helped mold Overwatch's diverse (and sometimes conflicting) agents into a cohesive fighting force. In unity, they found the strength to defeat the robots and end the Omnic Crisis.
Tumblr media
"Even I had my doubts about whether Overwatch would succeed," UN Under-Secretary-General Gabrielle Adawe, one of Overwatch's key architects, said shortly after the end of the Omnic Crisis. "But Morrison never gave up hope. He didn't just meet our expectations for what Overwatch and its agents could achieve; he shattered them."
The UN rewarded Morrison for his contributions by making him Overwatch's first official commander. Reyes was passed over in the process, and it created a rift between the two men that would lead to tragic consequences.
After the Omnic Crisis, Overwatch experienced a meteoric rise in prominence. New funding and resources gave the now-public organization far-reaching global influence. The world celebrated Overwatch's agents as heroes, but none more so than Morrison. He became the face of Overwatch, a symbol of hope and promise, from the cobblestone streets of King's Row to the sweltering night markets of Bangkok.
Strike Commander Morrison envisioned a bright new future for humanity. Under his leadership, Overwatch served as a global peacekeeping force and an engine for innovation, making advances in scientific fields as varied as space exploration and medical research. But even as Overwatch grew in power, Morrison stayed dedicated to the people around him. He trained new agents, instilling in them Overwatch's noble goals and ideals. At Morrison's memorial service, Reinhardt Wilhelm, one of the group's original members, said, "He devoted everything he was to Overwatch. He was our moral compass. Our inspiration. Our friend."
Tumblr media
Morrison and his peers ushered in an unprecedented era of peace and prosperity, but it was not to last. Two decades after Overwatch ended the Omnic Crisis and saved humanity, it was brought to its knees by a series of shocking allegations: negligence resulting in high-profile mission failures; corruption and mismanagement; weapons proliferation; human rights abuses; and more.
A special UN committee launched a lengthy and highly secretive investigation into the claims. This inquiry would lead to the dismantling of Overwatch, and its once-beloved agents would become objects of derision and suspicion in the media. But before all of that could happen, another tragedy would rock Overwatch and serve as the troubled organization's death rattle.
As the UN investigation proceeded, Overwatch's Swiss headquarters was destroyed in an apparent accident. Among the casualties were Morrison and Reyes. The UN has steadfastly maintained that there was no foul play behind this event. However, an anonymous source has given me access to classified UN debriefings and other data that paint a different picture of Overwatch's final days.
"After Morrison's promotion to strike commander, his relationship with Reyes changed. The tension became more pronounced as time went on. I tried to mend things. We all did. Sometimes when the closest bonds break, all you can do is pray you stay out of the cross fire."
These records indicate that a rebellion tore the group apart from within. On one side was Morrison, determined to hold together what remained of Overwatch. On the other side was Reyes, whose agenda remains unknown to this day. A battle raged between these men deep within Overwatch's base. At some point, their fighting triggered an explosion that destroyed the facility and sent the dreams of an entire generation up in flames.
According to Overwatch's former agents, this outcome was inevitable. "After Morrison's promotion to strike commander, his relationship with Reyes changed," Dr. Angela Ziegler, medical director of Overwatch, stated during a UN committee hearing. "The tension became more pronounced as time went on. I tried to mend things. We all did. Sometimes when the closest bonds break, all you can do is pray you stay out of the cross fire."
The UN data goes on to disclose something even more disturbing: Morrison's body was never recovered.
This revelation could explain a recent string of high-profile robberies and attacks that have dominated the news. A masked vigilante whom authorities have named "Soldier: 76" is considered the prime suspect in these incidents. In addition to bombing corporate offices and financial institutions in the United States, this individual has breached a number of former Overwatch bases. Soldier: 76 has stolen valuable technologies from these sites, including experimental weaponry, causing untold damages in the process.
Tumblr media
I've heard my share of theories that Soldier: 76 is Jack Morrison—theories I once would have discounted as fiction. But based on everything I've seen, I now believe these claims are true.
UN officials have declined to comment on Soldier: 76's identity. However, security personnel who were present at the former Overwatch base break-ins described the attacker as someone well versed in covert ops tactics. Surveillance footage of Soldier: 76 shows him performing superhuman feats of strength and endurance. At my request, noted forensic expert Amir Nejad, PhD, analyzed this footage. He determined that Soldier: 76 is precisely the same height and build that Morrison was in his last public appearance.
If Soldier: 76 is indeed Morrison, what is he doing, and why?
The veracity of the allegations leveled against Overwatch years ago remains a point of contention. Some historians and political pundits have questioned the motivations of those who first made the corruption charges against the group. Is Soldier: 76 on a mission to avenge the fall of Overwatch and restore its name? Is he trying to uncover a vast conspiracy that discredited and destroyed Overwatch? Or is he simply a bitter old soldier, clinging to lost glory and fighting a phantom war that he believes is still raging?
Even I, a child of the Overwatch Generation, know that the more altruistic of these scenarios are the stuff of fantasy. Soldier: 76's reckless activities, his willingness to put the lives of innocents at risk, prove that he is not driven by noble intentions. He is just a man acting in his own interests, another villain in league with the despots and international crime lords who terrorize our communities on a daily basis.
Standing before Jack Morrison's grave in Arlington National Cemetery, I'm reminded of rural Indiana's quiet serenity. Like the sea of cornstalks, neat rows of ivory tombstones seem to go on forever in all directions.
In this place of reflection and bittersweet remembrance, I realize all the more that Soldier: 76 is not the Jack Morrison I knew from my childhood. The Morrison I knew wouldn't hide behind a mask. He wouldn't plant bombs and steal weapons while the world suffered through another year of war and heartache.
That Morrison was buried here six years ago. All that's left is the shadow of the hero we once knew.

Physique — Overcome by Pain (Iron Lung)
Tumblr media
D-beat maniacs Physique hail from the insanely bumping punk scene in Olympia, WA, which also includes hardcore speedsters Electric Chair and noiseniks Cyberplasm, whose unclassifiable tunes work the Ven diagram of electro, blackened punk and harsh noise. The considerable pleasures to be had on Overcome by Pain are more straightforward: grinding hardcore inevitably driven by d-beat rhythms. It’s a grimy old sock, with plenty of gaping holes in it, but somehow it feels so right when you drag it onto that tired foot. Your barking, aging dog sort of feels younger again.
That suggests a question which clarifies when you drop the needle on this record: How long can forms so simple in their design (and seemingly so hostile to innovation) sustain the explosive energies of something like a punk song? Even Discharge felt the need to explore other sounds, for at least a little while, with notably disastrous results. Physique entertains no such ambitions, however harebrained. From “Onward” to “Game,” you get the same overdriven, buzzsaw Swedeath guitar tone; the same growling, barking vocals; the same essential rhythmic patterns, seemingly repeated with a ball-peen hammer to the back of your skull. Some of us really like that sort of treatment, but we don’t expect the rest of the world to share our issues.
Physique seems to be aware of the limitations and the lineage of their antics. See their direct visual quotation of Doom’s famous bandname logo, and check out “As Tradition Dictates,” which is the record’s most faithful reading of d-beat’s required sonic features. It may be necessary to the success of Overcome by Pain that the experience is so quick (the record passes by in a fleet, feral eleven minutes), and that it’s presented as a 7” record. As tradition dictates, indeed.
On the other hand, why shouldn’t the punk kids hold on to some semblance of stability? The world is on fire, full of chaotic volatility that presents nothing but doom-struck dread and disgust. The fascists are back, their moronic populism more than just an undercurrent of reactionary resentment; it’s got political juice all over the map right now (Argentina, the Netherlands, DC…). Those are old fights, and maybe some enduring tactics for resistance are worth keeping in practice. In any case, if you’re looking for a kick in the teeth that’ll make you smile through all the blood and shattered bone, give Overcome by Pain a spin. It hurts, and it’s really good.

cherik au fics
Other Crabs Cannot Be Trusted (8.4k) - Erik is a hermit crab and proud. He is also stalking a shore crab named Charles. Rating: General Audiences I absolutely adore this fic. It's definitely crack material, but it is SO good. It's super cute and funny and had me laughing at multiple different points in the story. Erik and Charles' characterization is spot on, and it is overall just super well written. Other notes: Crack AU A (More) Modern Olympia (4.6k) - Erik is a burglar who breaks into a house he assumed would be vacant for the night. He creeps into the house and enters a bedroom, only to find a very naked Charles in bed. Charles wakes up from the noise and finds a burglar staring back at him... Rating: Explicit So. Freaking. Good. I love Charles and Erik's dynamic in this one. They are both written so incredibly well. There's a perfect blend of humor, fluff, and the smut at the end really ties it all together. Other notes: Modern AU, no powers Let It Snow (6.9k) - Old high school enemies Charles and Erik bump into each other on the street during a freak snowstorm. After taking shelter at Charles' place, they spend the evening catching up and eventually figuring out they actually had a thing for each other back in school. Rating: Mature LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEE!!! The balance of tension, fluff, and humor is SO perfect, as well as the way Erik and Charles are written. I could literally hear them saying the dialogue in their voices. Super cute. Other notes: Modern AU, powers An Exercise in Frustration (4k) - Erik Lehnsherr's latest critically acclaimed film Shame features a full-frontal nudity scene. His long-suffering husband Charles is really very peeved about it. Rating: Mature So funny. Charles' misery is hilarious to read, and the way Erik treats it is even funnier. Very light-hearted and humorous with a touch of smut. Other notes: Modern AU, Acting AU, powers Sprich Mit Mir | Talk To Me (23k) - When Charles meets Erik on a midnight train to London, it’s like all of his Christmases and birthdays have come at once – until Erik opens his mouth and reveals he cannot speak a word of English. It isn’t easy to pursue a relationship with someone you need to play Pictionary with just to chat to, but with a little help from Charles’ telepathy, the two language-barrier lovers are determined to make it work. Rating: Explicit THIS FIC. THIS FIC!!!!!!!! I WILL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT HOW MUCH I ADORE THIS FIC. IT IS SOSOSOSOSOSO GOOD. Everything about it is perfect from beginning to end. I love the little details that the author incorporates, and the challenge of there being a language barrier between Charles and Erik really just adds a whole other level to their relationship. Their interactions are so realistic and adorable. The touch of conflict that the author throws in between them ties into the story SO WELL. And the smut is perfection in itself. Overall, an 11/10 read and I will continue to religiously read this fic until the end of my days. Other notes: Modern AU, powers Serendipity (16.3k) - Charles sends a text to the wrong number. Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Loved this fic so much. The text interactions between Charles and Erik are so freaking sweet. The shameless flirting on both of their parts was SO good, too. Overall, a sweet fic, and it is also the first part to a pretty small series of shorter fics in the same universe. Other notes: Modern AU, no powers Not So Much the Teacup (9k) - “Charles is basically the bride whisperer. It’s like he can read their minds.”  Rating: Explicit I love everything about this fic. Since the summery doesn't reveal much, this is basically an AU where Charles is a wedding planner. He is hired by Shaw to plan he and Emma Frost's wedding at museum, and while doing so, he meets Erik, who is an architect working on an exhibit. It's a really light-hearted story and the characterization of all the characters is perfect. Also, Charles and Erik get locked in a dark sound booth and have sex, so that's a bonus LOL. Other notes: Modern AU, Wedding Planner AU, no powers
Order Up (4.3k) - Charles has a terrible habit of multitasking, and that is probably why he absentmindedly tells the pizza man that he loves him when hanging up. Then the pizza man says it back and Charles is pretty much smitten from there. Rating: General Audiences I adore everything about this fic. Literally everything. It's funny and cute and perfect in so many ways. The flirting between Charles and Erik is so entertaining to read and I really enjoyed the way all of the other X-Men characters came into play. Other notes: Modern AU, powers The Associates (176.8k) - A series in which Erik is a mob boss who Charles is involved with. Rating: Explicit
I will say that I was wary about starting this series at first, especially since I'm not someone into the whole 'mafia mob boss' trope. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this series! It's really good and extraordinarily well written. The characterization is spot on for each character and I love Charles and Erik's dynamic, as well as the incorporation of other X-Men characters. Lots of smut and violence, but also moments of fluff, hurt/comfort, humor, etc. Other notes: Modern AU, Mafia AU, powers

This messy segment is dedicated to miss @ardeney-sims
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Byron Charles: Good morning everyone! Thank you for tuning in with us as I'm sure we've all heard the sad news by now about the tragic accident that claimed the life of our very own Duchess of Volos, Savannah Morris, and has left the Duke, Prince Damien hospitalized!
Lacy Evans: Waking up to that news was devasting for me. I know the feeling is a lot worse for their children, Princess Pandora, and Lady Daphne.
Maranda Shaw: Before we get any further, I want to introduce someone who is joining us on the panel today, Olympian Royal Expert: Jim James!
Tumblr media
Jim James: Good Morning everybody, thank you for having me today. Yes, I agree the recent news about the Duke and Duchess is sad indeed.
Arnold Mattis: Good on you Jim for joining us here today! With you here, I think its the time to talk about why having the monarchy and the nobility in Olympia is going to cause our downfall!
Jim James: Uh well, Olympia's monarchy has been around for -
Lacy Evans: Sorry, not to cut you off Jim but i don't think we should have that conversation right now
Arnold Mattis: Listen I'm just saying I think the nation should have this debate, now more than ever!
Lacy Evans: And you think the time to talk about this is now while were about to discuss how two of our royal children became orphans overnight?
Tumblr media
Arnold Mattis: They are no different than every other orphan in the country! What makes them any different?
Maranda Shaw: I can believe what I'm hearing
Jim James: Um...
Lacy Evans: I just don't think this is the time to talk about this.
Arnold Mattis: I mean look at things from a sensible viewpoint. Ever since the Kings wife died-
Maranda Shaw: Queen Eleonora, Speak of her with respect!
Arnold Mattis: Right ever since she died, The King has never been the same and as soon as Damien and Savannah got the chance, they took their kids and noped the fuck out of there, and now that they came back this tragic accident happens? Something is going on and the two people that know about it, are one in the ground and the other is a fucking vegetable! Something is going on with the monarchy, something rotten and if we don't do something now, I'm telling you Olympia’s is gonna suffer for it!
Arnold Mattis continues: That's all I'm gonna say on the topic. Take it how you will.
Byron Charles: I think after all of that, let us take a commercial break!
Tumblr media
<Commercial Break> <Commercial Break> <Commercial Break>
Tumblr media
Byron Charles: Welcome back! There so much we need to talk about today, so let us hop right into it! Yesterday evening, the day after this tragic accident occurred, Their Royal Highness, Princess Pandora, and Lady Daphne finally arrived in Olympia!
Maranda Shaw: and let me just say, arrived they did!
Lacy Evans:  After news of the accident, we all knew it was only a matter of time before the Princess was set to make their way home. A few media outlets were tipped off of when exactly that time would be and managed to secure an invite to Olympus to be there in person. This was how Princess Pandora was welcomed home after being away for 10 years unfortunately, the full video is copyrighted but we have screencaps of the video in question.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jim James: Wow, I have no words. This was very inappropriate and very much out of line to treat our royals as this!
Lacy Evans: And just in case, that wasn't enough for you here are some photos that were taken that are currently circulating around the internet.
Tumblr media
Maranda Shaw: What I'm most curious about is that little child right there hiding behind Lady Daphne. Was there an announcement of another child that I and millions of other people somehow missed?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Byron Charles: Yes who is that?
Jim James: There was no announcement of another child being born into the Royal Family.
Arnold Mattis: Well I can tell you why there wasn't an announcement! Having a teen mother in the Royal Family isn't exactly a good look to have! They wouldn't want another dark stain on their picture-perfect image of royal goodness.
Maranda Shaw: There's no way King Abraxas would allow something like this to have happened.
Arnold Mattis: Well it's not like he can control whatever happens outside of Olympia right?
Maranda Shaw: right, whatever happens outside of Olympia, King Abraxas has no say over it. It's the parent's job to keep their children in check and not have them be out here sleeping with whoever while underage and unwed! The fact that this happened while under Prince Damien's and Savannah's watch says all the more of how terrible their decision was in leaving Olympia and raising their children on their own.
Tumblr media
Arnold Mattis: Yes girl go off
Lacy Evans: First off, no. Everybody wants to push this narrative that their decision to leave Olympia and step down from having an active role in the family was because they were selfish and oh poor Savannah couldn't handle her responsibilities when everybody and their mothers know that was not the case at all!
Maranda Shaw: What are you even talking about! She couldn't handle it! She knew what she was getting into when she married into the Royal Family! She bit off more than she could chew and that's why she had that mental breakdown and was hospitalized for like 2 months!
Tumblr media
Lacy Evans: How dare you! You know why that happened! She had her *beep* child snatched out of her *beep* hands-
Tumblr media
<Commercial Break> <Commercial Break> <Commercial Break>
Tumblr media
Byron Charles: Princess Pandora is finally here in Olympia and many doubt how she and her sister will handle royal life after living out of the spotlight for so long
Arnold Mattis: Obviously, they won't handle it well considering how they reacted yesterday
Lacy Evans: How would you react to having someone shout about your dead mother not even 24 hours after she passed?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jim James: I'm personally curious to see how these kids will adjust to life in Olympia now that they're here though. I'm particularly interested in the oldest girl, Princess Pandora. She gonna have a lot more pressure on her shoulders now and after yesterday, unfortunately, it wouldn't score her any good points with the people.
Jim James continued: She shouldn't have answered any questions or have been unprepared as she was there. She showed weakness and someone will capitalize on that. She needs to toughen up and learn to not react so obviously to things, otherwise, her time in Olympia will get a lot worse, and completing her duty as a Princess of Olympia will get a lot harder!
Byron Charles: Well said, Jim. I think we're gonna end it on that note. Thank you everyone for spending your mornings with us. Viewers let us know how you think Princess Pandora will handle her Royal life and duties to Olympia? Thank you and see you tomorrow!

OVERWATCH IS BACK: UNCERTAINTY AND HOPE AFTER UN CONFIRMS VIGILANTE ACTIVITY
Olympia Shaw | May 27, 2016
Tumblr media
NEW YORK CITY (Atlas News) – In the past few weeks, investigators confirmed that a number of violent incidents across the world, including Monday's attempted museum heist, have involved several notable former Overwatch operatives.
The United Nations finally admitted today that those individuals were not acting on official orders.
In its entirety, the UN's terse statement reads: "The United Nations has not authorized any Overwatch operations. The organization’s charter remains revoked." Further questions from this reporter were met with hostility or silence.
Such a short statement belies its astonishing truth: We have not seen the last of Overwatch. Being dismantled by the UN only drove them into the shadows.
Tumblr media
This news will undoubtedly spark concern. It should. Overwatch was dismantled due to overwhelming negative public sentiment and allegations of corruption and abuses of power; the thought that the organization's remnants are operating without supervision is a chilling one.
But while governments from the Kremlin to Downing Street were quick to issue unreserved condemnations, the public was not. An Atlas News flash poll taken today showed a large amount of anger over the possibility that agents of Overwatch had gone "rogue," but it was the poll's final question that revealed the most interesting reaction. Nearly three out of every four respondents said they were "uncertain" what Overwatch's return would mean for the world.
Overwatch's history invites such uncertainty. In wartime, it was regarded as humanity's savior. Today, many have bitter memories of its disgraceful ending.
In order to understand what may happen now, it may help to take another look at Overwatch’s past, and the desperate circumstances from which it was born.
The Omnic Crisis
When Omnica Corporation revolutionized robotic manufacturing, it seemed the world was on the verge of entering an economic golden age. Their massive factories of automated construction machines and self-improving software algorithms were patented, marketed as "omniums," and installed on every continent.
What came next is well-documented. The omniums began to break down. Independent analysis showed they would never come close to meeting the corporation's promises of growth and output. Omnica was investigated and forcibly dissolved after evidence of fraud was uncovered, its omniums shut down.
Tumblr media
That is why it came as such a surprise when these defunct, dismantled omniums woke themselves back up and immediately launched a military campaign against all of humanity.
This was a war many countries thought they were prepared to fight. But no single country, no matter how powerful its military, could permanently shut down a single omnium. The adaptability of robots, once celebrated by humanity, had become a tactical nightmare. Worst of all, there were no demands from the omnics. There was no ideological reason for their aggression. They simply attacked, and we did not understand why.
Overwatch: A Change In Strategy
No country was succeeding in securing its own territory. But some soldiers and strategists showed remarkable ingenuity in acclimating to this new brand of warfare. The United Nations covertly brought a few of these unique minds together to form a small, nimble team, aimed at striking significant blows against omnic strongholds. Their names—Morrison, Reyes, Amari, Liao, Wilhelm, and Lindholm—have since become legendary. The world would come to know them as the founders of Overwatch.
Tumblr media
In highly secretive missions, they targeted the omnics' command and control protocols. After great sacrifice and heroism in a series of dangerous raids, they destroyed it all, rendering the omnic armies inert. The Omnic Crisis had finally come to an end.
For decades, as Overwatch grew, they made global stability their mission. And the world was happy to have them. Rogue omnics, terrorism, warmongering dictators, none of them could stand for long against such a capable, dedicated force. During natural disasters, we watched heroic rescue operations and efficient rebuilding initiatives. We saw Overwatch pioneer scientific initiatives to eradicate epidemics, reverse ecological damage, and develop new breakthroughs in medical care. They were a symbol of hope. An entire generation, my generation, was raised to see them as the best of humanity.
The Fall
Overwatch never had a shortage of critics. Even in its glory days, many voices called for severe restrictions on the agency's mission, insisting that such a powerful group of individuals needed careful oversight. Rumors of black-ops missions—carrying out tasks like assassination and kidnapping—were dismissed by the public as paranoid fantasies.
Tumblr media
But as time passed, criticism became harder to shrug off, and the agency seemed to be tone-deaf to public concerns. Controversial missions stoked public outrage until it reached a fever pitch, and some of Overwatch’s most famous and celebrated agents were forced to retire in disgrace. If that had been the end of it, many might have accepted these missteps as the unavoidable signs of an aging, bloated bureaucracy, suffering under monolithic leadership that desperately needed a change in direction. The truth was much worse than that.
In the final years of Overwatch's existence, a top secret division called "Blackwatch" was revealed. There were stories of assassination, coercion, kidnapping, torture, and worse. Governments called on the UN to shut down the "aggressive and repeated violations of many countries' sovereignty." As public distrust swelled, a massive explosion wiped out Overwatch's headquarters in Switzerland. The United Nations called it an accident; today we know it was a battle, a dispute between Overwatch commander Jack Morrison and Blackwatch commander Gabriel Reyes. Overwatch's death knell was that of two former comrades laying waste to all they had built.
In the wake of such an incident, little could remain hidden. The full transgressions of Overwatch's shadow operations became known. Even the most ardent defenders inside the organization bowed to the truth and called for its dissolution.
The United Nations could do nothing but shut down Overwatch. Few people at the time doubted it was the right call. The world had never been more peaceful—the biggest threat to global stability and growth was, in many minds, Overwatch itself. Its time had passed.
Today
In the years without Overwatch, we've seen the world change. A movement promoting omnic civil rights and citizenship gained traction. The global economy surged. There seemed to be no shortage of good news.
But, as with Overwatch, the good news hid many darker trends. Tensions between humans and omnics have never been higher, particularly after the assassination of the omnic spiritual leader Tekhartha Mondatta. War may very well be inevitable. Local political leaders have accused certain corporations of using covert operatives to "persuade" government officials into accepting exploitive deals, and when that failed, of hiring mercenaries to enact more permanent solutions. We've seen shadow organizations operating with impunity, often leaving a trail of dead civilians in their wake.
Is this why these former Overwatch agents have come out of hiding? Could they not stand by and watch any longer?
Has the world's situation grown so desperate that they believe nobody else can help?
And does the world want them back? Should it?
Tumblr media
The surveillance footage from Monday's attempted museum heist instantly caught the world's attention. Two former Overwatch agents risked life and limb against two frighteningly capable mercenaries, and the theft was thwarted. But while much has been made over the images of sheer mayhem—that, miraculously, did not result in any deaths—there was another moment that caught my attention.
Two young boys were caught in the middle of the violence. (And someone give them a medal, please, for keeping their heads straight in that situation.) When the attack ended, they spoke briefly to Lena Oxton, an ex-Overwatch operative known to the public as "Tracer." The surveillance footage does not reveal what she said to them. But it does show the expression on the older boy's face.
Hope.
When it comes to Overwatch, my generation understands that feeling all too well. To us, Overwatch embodied it. Its corruption was nothing short of a betrayal. The cynical part of me urges the world to take firm action if the dark forces that brought Overwatch down rise again in the form of self-appointed vigilantes.
All that gives me pause is this: The Overwatch Generation has grown up. We once believed in hope. It still lives within us, and some have chosen to act upon it in astonishing ways.
Consider the news from around the world in recent years. A Chinese environmentalist with a taste of adventure saved a nest of endangered arctic wildlife from a collapsing glacier using nothing but her own inventions. A musician from Brazil became a hero of his favela when he exposed and destroyed a corporation's exploitive use of local land. A professional-gamer-turned-mech-pilot has become a celebrity in Korea due to her publicized acts of heroism.
Tumblr media
These are exactly the types of remarkable individuals Overwatch would have recruited. Take a look on the net; they are exactly who today's kids are looking up to as heroes. Would they have been inspired to take such extraordinary action if not for Overwatch?
The future is unknown. Evidence suggests that not all surviving Overwatch agents have been using their talents for the good of peace. But examine what happened yesterday at the museum. Which Overwatch did we see in that surveillance footage? The secretive, corrupt assassins? Or two disciples of Overwatch's original ideals?
More importantly: Should we fear the new generation of heroes just because the old generation let us down?
I don't believe we should.

All eyes on Andrea Shaw
There’s a reason Andrea Shaw is the Ms Olympia champion, and she’s going to prove it yet again at the 2021 Ms Olympia.
Andrea first graced the Ms Olympia stage in 2020 and won first place (on her birthday no less!). She was a breath of fresh air. For 10 years, world-renowned champion, Iris Kyle dominated the Ms Olympia, and people were ready for a new face to represent the sport. Andrea was the perfect fit.
Tumblr media
Let’s get the obvious out of the way - the woman’s beefy. Cartoonishly so. Sure, you’ve got Margie Martin who looks like Jebriodo’s beautifully rendered amazons, but Andrea’s got her beat in terms conditioning. The lady’s ripped. Diced. Peeled. Shredded. Her muscles are perfectly etched with a fine detail that’s even beyond Michelangelo.
Tumblr media
To fully get what I mean, you have to watch her videos with MuscleAngels. It’s some of the best female muscle content you’ll ever watch.
You’ve got some ladies who are great because they just ooze sex (the orgasmic Brandi Mae Akers). Others have that one defining feature that keeps you coming back for more (Angela Salvagno’s sentient pecs). But, Andrea is different.
She’s more modest than Brandi, but is sexy nonetheless. She doesn’t have one defining trait like Angela, but every muscle is pumped to perfection.
When you watch her flex her biceps, you would think it was photoshop if not for it being a video. The sheer mass of her arms. The thick, ropey veins bulging their way out. Every muscle ripples the way you want them to. Andrea is a bonafide hunk. A stud. A beefcake. Take your pick.
Tumblr media
That being said, her feminine appeal is undeniable. You see it in her videos, and you see it onstage. The way she moves from one pose to the next. She doesn’t just hit a side chest pose. She flows into it. Embodies it. Owns it. It’s like no matter where she is, the woman feels at home, and we’re just a visitor. It’s that contrast of brawny muscle and delicate grace that makes her a cut above the rest.
Tumblr media
To top it off, she’s charismatic as can be! Watch any interview with Andrea, and you’ll see that she’s a smart, funny, and easygoing woman with an incredible work ethic. Plus, her love of bodybuilding is infectious. For years, she struggled with “fitting in” certain divisions, but the return of women’s open bodybuilding has allowed her to flourish in ways she never could. You can learn more about her fitness career in the video below.
Tumblr media
There’s no doubt that Andrea will take the 2021 Ms Olympia. If her recent showing at the 2021 Wings of Strength contest is any indication, she’s still got that sharp, shapely physique that the other ladies would kill for. Sure, the competition’s stacked. But, then again, so is Andrea.
