I was never able to really get a feel for Leafpool's personality in the books, especially since she's always contrasted with Squirrelflight who has a pretty consistent personality (at least for Warriors standards). She's kind of like Hollyleaf where they change her personality depending on what they want to happen in the plot I think. How do you approach writing her? I'm really fond of your Spottedleaf, so I was wonder if Leafpool has any fun quirks like her.

I approach Leafpool as being VERY tired. Her life is characterized as never really being in control of her own fate, being punished for any simple pleasures she takes tenfold, so I write her as becoming very defeatist. Poor girl.

Because Leafpool is never in REAL control, somehow, it gives her this air that she's in total control. You can't scare her. StarClan can tell her that her kids are cursed, Hollyleaf can tell her to kill herself, Bramblestar can jump in front of her and snarl, she's never more than briefly phased. "Yeah sure this may as well happen."

In a way, she's almost the total opposite of Jayfeather, who never met a rule he wasn't willing to punch. It is interesting that each one of the Three has a unique relationship to the fate that chains up Leafpool.

Allows herself to love Mothpaw... war breaks out and Moth has to return to RiverClan.

Tries to warn Squilf about Brambleclaw in spite of StarClan wanting them to be together, first fight with her sister ever.

Runs off with Crowfeather, returns home to find out her mentor died before she could say goodbye.

Gives birth, allows Squilf to take them, eventually gets threatened by Hollyleaf.

(side note: i am considering leafpool's name being an honor title, with her old name being Leafstripe, and Squirrelpaw failing two assessments just like Nightheart)

But a big change in my rewrite is that the dramatic scenes that aren't consistent with that resigned sorrow go to Crowfeather. He's a complete and utter ham. Leafpool isn't out here trying to name Hollykit 'Crowkit' or confessing her unwavering love for him in front of his wife and child, THAT is Crowfeather making an ass of HIMSELF in front of that wife and child lmao.

Leaf's feelings are more complicated and repressed. Hard life.

On the bright side though, there ARE changes from canon so that the Clan has more nuanced feelings about her instead of her whole life being a nonstop beatdown.

Most of ThunderClan, which heavily leans Fire Alone, agrees that Leafpool did the right thing by giving her kits to Squilf to invoke the Queen's Rights. Sure she lapsed, but Fire Alone cats are softer on the Cleric's Vow in general.

Bramblestar demoting her in Cruel Season has a VERY mixed reception. It's Leafpool!! Leafpool Moonpool!!!

Her death many years later in the Sister Raid actually tanks Bramblestar's reputation. It was seen as cruel, pointless, and avoidable, and they lost a very popular and experienced Cleric.

(side note again: still considering how the 'unclear sign' plot beat is going to go in my rewrite, because i cannot imagine jayfeather not just lying about that. "yeah yeah yeah they said yes bramblestar, im supposed to heal this cat obviously. move.")

Misc Design Stuff:

She's got a mane that you can see on Dovewing too, since Dove is Leaf's grandchild now.

Like Sandstorm, uncle Longtail, and grandpaw Runningwind, Leafpool's stripes are horizontal.

I'm still doing research into what she has specifically, but Bonefall Leafpool is intersex. Those are stud jowls.

Considering the cat version of PCOS because it explains a lot; weight gain, a receding hairline that could be shared with Lionblaze, the jowls as a facial hair parallel, difficult pregnancy, etc.

Still doing my research though.

And lastly, Mothpool is endgame in this Rewrite. They can never be together officially, but it's about the yearning. It's about finding freedom with your escapist fantasy partner or being in shackles with your true love. She chose the CHAINS.

I'll go first by saying Mothpool is overhyped and Leafpool had more chemestry with Cinderpelt. (in my opinion, ship what you like!)

Positive:

I did think of leafcinder before and thought it was cute but not really something I'll get passionate about (i tend to be very picky on these kinda age gap/mentor x apprentice ships), now that I'm reminded of it I can really see it! They would have a great dynamic (taking tnp cinderpelt personality into account here. tbh her in tpb and her in tnp are almost different characters to me... where's your whimsy girl...), and honestly, there are almost endless options for Leafpool ships (she interacts with so many cats woagh that's crazy for this series she actually has friends??) that have more chemistry than crowpool. I mean it's fine I guess from a strictly plot perspective (and even that's well. bendable) but why is Leafpool, 30 cat years after their breakup, dead, in cat heaven, STILL deeply in love with cat Clay Puppington. I know they will get back together in StarClan because the authors absolutely love them and think they popped off writing their romance subplot they think they created a banger. Sorry this veered off into negative can't help being a hater.

hollyjaylion, leafsquirrel and bramblehawk are the three shipcest pairings I will never be able to be normal about. Canon to me. people complaining about dovetiger's age gap (which are commonplace in the wc series tiger is not alone in dating apprentices) are so boring. they actually have the most wholesome dynamic in the current era/arcs I'd argue. they're in love and I love them. as a ship and both as characters.

fallenholly had the option to be one of THE best dubiously-canon wc pairings to come out of this series had they just went the direction of making fallen actually somewhat more messed up after being trapped as a ghost in the torment tunnels for cat centuries like. I actually prefer spottedfire and cinderfire over sandfire. anything over sandfire.

Standing by my shoes a flower is blooming. Fire flowers filled the night with their booming. Maybe in the sky, I could leave behind my heart and it’s weeping. Summer days are all that I am dreaming~

A rose colored glasses Mothwing picking flowers across the river. Fireworks Beneath my Shoes is such a mothpool song I adore it so much and was listening to it on loop while drawing this- I’m sketching a anthro piece with these with moth and leaf right after I post this with this song again lol

(ID- Mothwing is standing to the left with her head looking to the camera and pretty orangy amber eye looking off to the right. Her front paw is up and a woven satchel hangs off it, small purple flowers inside it just like the ones dotting the ground under their paws. She is a peachy orange kind of color with brown down their back, mane, hair floof, and tail. A white stripes goes down from their chin, chest, and belly with a moth marking on her chest just like the one on their back which is brown instead. Willow leaves hang off her ears on two tendrils with two more bracelets of it on her tail and a lilypad on their tail. Under them is very messy windswept grass, small purple flowers dotting it and a river right at the base which her tail sweeps over. Behind them os a massive willow tree mostly just showing off its hanging leaves. Mothpool my loves<3333

I am so tired so I’m just gonna post and pass out lol but I wanted to draw them. Also changed my Leafpool design to be more Leafpool, her other eye is the same green but with blue while her left is green with orange. Cuddle cats <<3333333

(ID- Leafpool is laying down with her back against a tree, her tail curled up, and her paws around Mothwing who is cuddled into her. Leafpool is a light brown with orange markings on her cheek, nose, tail, paws, and side. Cream is on her belly, muzzle, ear tufts, tail tip, and toe tips. A darker color stripes around her pelt with a few black markings on her hair, tail tip, and back leg. She is looking down at Mothwing with a sweet amber and green eye, a small smile on her face. Mothwing is curled up on Leaf with her front leg over Leaf’s side, her other wrapped under, his tail swooping up, and his back leg curled up. She is mostly pale yellow with peach on her face, ears, and back legs. And brown is on her hair, mane, tail, back, and paws with a darker brown striped down her tail on her paws, on her back legs, on her muzzle, and on her hair tuft. Demon inspired Mapleshade for @bonefall ‘s “Better Call Mapleshade” au that I adore. She’d definitely stand out in Starclan and everyone pretty much on sight would know she’s from the DF. I think her hooves would make that clop clop clop noise as she walks and as she strolls up to the her council all the cats who don’t like her (mostly Moth Flight) all they hear is her hooves and know exactly who’s about to show up. She’s amazing and I love this design so much.

(ID- Mapleshade is standing to the left with her head slightly turned to the right and back legs sprawled out to give her a wider stance, her back front paw raised up and her tail twisting upwards. She is a cherry red kind of color with dark almost black back legs, streaks down her eyes, and on her ears. Over her face is a mask shape in a darker red that also goes down her back, and dripping down her front leg. Her fur has a very wavy almost weightless feel especially on her face and on her ears twirls in a cyclone like shape, the same as inside her ears and on her tail. Her chest, paws, tail, ear tufts, and inner ear tufts are mixes of a pink and pale almost white pink color. Her white mane twisted to make a sort of cravat shape. The end of her tail is twisted to make a spade referring back to devil tail imagery and her back paws are replaces with hooves. Her sclera are black with a flame for her pupil and the same flamey colors on her eyelashes. On the corner of her lip is a little heart beauty mark in black. Her lineart has a bright magenta over it giving into the evil feel. End ID)

Also just for Refrence Maple is HUGE especially compared to Moth Flight who is pretty short lol. She’s massive and I love her.

Ratatattstststtst

Knew how I wanted to draw these two so I drew Apo and Owen! Took a bit to get used to more human proportions but I like how they came out. The minute I saw parkour on Apo’s sheet I knew I had to draw him in a tree, little rat guys. Semi made to parallel eachother even tho we don’t know if they’ll be close in RatsSMP.

(Apo is the first image and is sat on a tree branch with dark spruce leaves all around him, his pink rat tail curled up to him and little rat paws holding onto the branch. He has dusty brown hair that swoops up under his rounded ears and falls over his eyes. He has a big nose and mischievous Berry colored eyes. My #1 post of 2022

Gosh okay but the story of Hawkfrost being a creation of the clans still vying hatred for each other and clear aggression and how power is so easily manipulated is so good. I hate hate hate when he’s just pushed down into ‘born evil/genetic evil’ bc it’s so dumb and I hate it.

He was brought in and immediately outcast. Taken in a horrible time when Riverclan were recovering still from Tigerstar’s claws him and his sister were treated horribly. They both learned that the world isn’t fair and they had to fight for what others were born with. Hawk took this in a more aggressive way, thinking the only way he’d ever be anything was to take it while Moth worked her fur off to show she was good enough at all. He gets praise for being loyal and cruel to outsiders while shamed for holding his heritage or letting his softer side out, especially by his mentor Leopardstar. Others attention on him is like a full belly. He needs it he has to have it. So he trains to be stronger, more charismatic, smart, tougher then his brutish father who was so one sided. The only ones he could be open to were his sister and then his brother. They must be feeling the same way he was? Scrapping for sunshine? But he couldn’t leave them behind he had to get them what they wanted, high spots in the clans just beside him.

Hawk fakes the sign for Moth finally showing she was worthy of being a healer to the tough Mudfin(claw). And he sets up a plan to get Bramble as leader! Seeing his siblings and him prove everyone wrong fuels him with happiness. He’s at the lake. Standing over Firestar with a smile across his face, practically able to taste the power soon to come to his blood. But Brambleclaw won’t accept it? Why can’t he see what they can become? Hawk is angry, fueled like his heart was on fire he attacks Bramble but then it stops. A stake through the chest. Pain not from his wound but form the betrayal in his belly. He was so lost in power he fell in a fools way. He was nothing but a blinded firefly, bright but unable to see it for himself.

Leafmoth/Mothpool 7/10 It's nice! Not personally invested. I'm just like looking from the sides like yeah them girls gay. Good for them. I do think it's cool that they have this whole "Devoted Christian girl and her secretly atheist gf and they're both closeted" kinda vibe. To me at least. Good ship, I don't think I have anything particular to comment on their relationship? But Tangentially related, those aus where Moth is the other parent of the three bc she's a trans molly.. so I had to try to not think of one that wasn't Mothpool or SorrelLeaf, but then I had a funny idea;

Leafpool x Daisy

instead of becoming close to Crowfeather, when Leafpool first met Daisy, she found herself awestruck with the barn molly

as Daisy joined ThunderClan, Leafpool made excuses to visit the medicine cat den, checking on her and making sure she's alright. The two grew close and Daisy was thankful to have someone by her side

they were fast friends as Leafpool taught Daisy about life in ThunderClan

when her kits were born, Leafpool doted on Berrykit, Hazelkit, and Mousekit and part of her wished that she herself could have her own family

one with a partner as caring as Daisy

as Daisy learns about her former mate Smoky, she's heartbroken and turns to her friend, Leafpool for comfort

the medicine cat is there for her

Leafpool helps care for the kits and as they watch them one day, Daisy asks if Leafpool ever considered taking a mate and having kits

Leafpool reminds her that she can't do that - she's a medicine cat, after all

Daisy seems saddened about learning this before it clicks with her and she asks if she was willing to have a secret surrogate

Leafpool is surprised and brings up that she doesn't even have a mate - she can't have a mate

Daisy reminds Leafpool that she, herself, doesn't have a mate, either, and yet she's taking care of her kits

Leafpool points out that Daisy has her for help

Daisy retorts with the fact she's here to help Leafpool

taking in what she said, Leafpool feels flustered by how Daisy just wants her to be happy and brings up how she's not even interested in a tom to get any help having kits with

without hesitation, Daisy asks if there's any she-cats she's interested in

surprised, Leafpool looks to Daisy and isn't sure that to say

Daisy misreads Leafpool's silence and states that it's okay for she-cats to like she-cats and toms to like toms and how those feelings are completely natural

and Leaf ends up having to interrupt her, assuring that she knows but that she didn't expect the question

Daisy prompts her to tell but Leafpool looks away

finally, Leafpool admits that she likes being around the fluffy cream-colored queen and that, if she ever wanted a mate, she wanted one like her

More Main Gay Cats

TO CLARIFY: This is about adding stable, long term couples.

The Bonefall Rewrite is already full of bisexual/pansexual characters who date the same sex, plus a couple transgendered warriors, but because I work by fixing canon ships and events, this means that a lot of the long-term stable couples are between opposite-gender cats. I want to add more long-term MLM and WLW couples.

Additionally, the WLW/MLM couples I’ve got are mostly background elements, as a result of the fact I save cats who would have died and have more freedom to change the genders + orientations of side characters. We need more in the foreground between main characters.

(hollyleaf and leafpool have sapphic relationships but they don't work out for either one, because of Canon Reasons, though I am seeking to do something with mothpool. Notably, Hollylark dies in a similar way to her canon equivalent, Larksong)

Other: Firestar is Aromantic and in a QPR with Sandstorm. Rosetail is aromantic. Toadnettlepool is a polycule.

I think one of the more decent Mothpool content is the Bluebells MAP. Where Leafpool sufferers from Hanahaki disease. (A fictional disease that occurs when one is suffering from one sided love, the patients throat will fill up with flowers and proceed to cough up petals. The only way for it to be cured is if the crush returns the feelings) and when Mothwing returns her feelings she is cured. It’s pretty unique.

The timeline gets switched around and "The Three" from Misty au (Moth/Hawk/Frog) are the prophesied Three. What would their powers be and how would they / their family react?

ksh to be clear the three in the misty au are not the three from po3. i'm still deciding if hjl are mothpool's, or if they're part of the five f family panclan polycule (altho technically at the time it's the four f family panclan polycule), but.

hawk would have lion's power straight up. he's terrified of being like his father/scaring feathertail, so being unbeatable in a fight would terrify him. at the same time, one of his major flaws being arrogant, so it's character fitting.

frog...i'm not sure. hm. you may know that i like giving cats powers that don't have to be magical, like, that cats could think were just being really good at things. anyway, frog's deeply empathetic, and also very volatile. so i think enhanced empathy for him, similar to jaystorm in ashes.

moth's power should be the most subtle, because of her atheism. (i haven't decided how it works in the misty au, but moth's atheism Always informs my decisions about her, even if she's not an atheist.) i think...i want her to be unnaturally good at finding things. like, she finds the moonpool, she finds (magic plot device herb), etc.

tigerstar would 100% try to convince them that these powers are because of him/connected to him. because of the nature of moth's power, he wouldn't be able to hook into her as well, and frog would pick up on tigerstar's motives fairly early on, but hawk would kind of be seduced by this idea of being able to control his strength, sort of like using tigerstar against tigerstar.

moth and frog do eventually get hawk out, but they have to work for it.

feathertail is proud of them. that's p much it. same for stormheart and stonefur. mistyfoot's even more detatched, because it's like, great! the kits i didn't want to have are blessed by starclan. how fantastic. i'm sure the cats who are probably already judging me for giving up my kits are judging me even more.

(they aren't. judging her, that is. it's just that tiger spent a Lot of time mocking her abilities as a mother.)

they probably wouldn't tell leopardstar. maybe mudfur. he'd probably find out anyway. so uhh...there's no po3 drama to be had, so ig that's it for this.

feathertail gets very fuck you, starclan, because of the quest. so now she's kind of like. cool. cool cool cool. you couldn't save me as a kit, you sent me on a quest that should have killed me, and now you force this onto my kits.

by the end of tnp, mistyfoot has been able to somewhat connect to the three, so she doesn't really take it negatively.

stormheart and stonefur are still supportive and still have no idea what they should do.

uh, yeah! that's basically it.

They find Tigerstar before they find Feathertail.

"Where is she?" Frogpaw asks.

"Is it so impossible I want to talk to my children alone?"

Hawkfrost sits. "Why do you even want to talk to us?"

Tigerstar sighs, his eyes half-closed. "I died before you were born," he says. "I never got to know you."

"Why now?" Frogpaw asks, half-hissing.

"I thought...I thought RiverClan would tell you stories about me. And I guess I wanted to give you a chance to come to your own conclusions. But you can't do that unless you hear my side of the story."

"Feathertail is scared of you," Mothwing says. Her shoulder still aches.

"I suspect Feathertail is afraid of a lot of things," he says.

She hates that it's true.

HOOOO BOY-- I love Darkstripe, every inch of his gross mean self, and I like DarkTiger ONLY as a one-sided deal. Tbh their relationship is unbalanced and stinky so I don't support it or relationships like it, I just think the dynamic is neat. 

MothPool, obvs. Just two medicine gals putting flowers in eachother's fur. 

I also really like Moonflower and Sunstar as a couple but-- I don't know if Sunstar could handle all that woman. 

A poly ship I enjoy is Gray Wing, Turtle Tail and Slate... just... all good...

Mothpool AU Rambles - Po3

I made some Mothpool hypokits.

Quailwing (named after Mothwing and equivalent to Jay) is a dilute chocolate mackerel tabby tom with blind blue eyes (blue is inherited from Mothwing).

Russetleaf (named after Leafpool and equivalent to Holly) is a chocolate and red mackerel torbie she-cat with green eyes (green is inherited from Leafpool who carried the gene from her parents... she’s also a demigirl cuz I said so).

Lynxcloud (equivalent to Lionblaze) is a fluffy reddish-orange mackerel tabby tom with amber eyes (inherited from Leafpool).

I got the genetics from a genetic generator (I changed them a bit though...) so they should be accurate.

Excuse me as I rant about an AU idea I had-

So basically.

Leafpool (at the time Leafpaw) ends up getting really close to Mothwing while Squilf is out and about.

Mothwing feels comfortable telling her that she’s trans and just didn’t want to tell anyone outside of RiverClan, because she already knew she was by the time she was apprenticed so why would anyone care? Plus she didn’t want to get discriminated against even though at this rate the Clans are used to same sex couples (Firestar and Graystripe are a thing, Sandstorm’s also there) and trans cats (Firestar, Sandstorm, probably a lot of others)...

Anyways, most of TNP goes the same, but then Leafpool ends up having kits with Mothwing instead... Mothwing is surprised to hear this, but the two of them, Squirrelflight and Ferncloud (who Leafpool decides should nurse the kits... Mothwing has other thoughts though) go to have the kits away from the Clans.

The first born is a chocolate she-kit (you’ll see...). Before even seeing his eyes or anything Leafpool knows that she should be named Quailkit, so she is.

Next is a chocolate and red mackerel torbie she-kit. Mothwing names this one Russetkit, having heard of ShadowClan’s deputy and her friendship with her mother Sasha.

Lastly is a fluffy red she-kit (they trans boiiiiiiiiiiii). While Leafpool wants to name her Mothkit, Mothwing advises against it and Squirrelflight decides to name her Lynxkit.

When it comes time to go home though, Lynxkit has established a bond with Mothwing, who already wanted at least one of the kits to come to RiverClan. Leafpool bids her daughter and Mothwing farewell and brings Quailkit and Russetkit to ThunderClan.

Quailkit soon decides that he/him pronouns fit him better after getting to know his grandfather Firestar, and in RiverClan Lynxkit does the same upon getting to know Mothwing, who he has a close bond with, better.

The only cats who know the truth in RiverClan are Leopardstar, Willowpaw and Mothwing, while in ThunderClan many more know the truth - Squirrelflight, Brambleclaw (vaguely;he knows the Three aren’t his and Squilf’s kits but doesn’t know who they are), Firestar, Sandstorm and the nursery permaqueens.

The Three get apprenticed. Russetpaw is excited to be a medicine cat apprentice, while her brother Quailpaw is determined to become a warrior and overcome his disability. Meanwhile in RiverClan, Lynxpaw is excited to become a warrior, despite his crush on Willowpaw slowing his progress down a bit.

Now here, Quailpaw and Russetpaw don’t switch roles. While Russetpaw does still struggle with herb meanings and such, Leafpool gives her ways to remember them, through little rhymes or short songs. Quailpaw gets training in his dreams from Yellowfang, Spottedleaf and Cinderpelt (though Cinder’s presence is weaker due to her also being by Cinderpaw’s side as a guardian angel/imaginary friend to her, more on that later), learning how to hunt through both sight and smell.

Eventually Russetpaw goes to RiverClan to make sure everything’s okay, before getting stuck due to Twoleg doing... I don’t know what they were doing during Dark River. During her time in RiverClan she bonds with both Lynxpaw and Willowpaw, the latter of whom she was already close to due to medicine cat meetings.

Now, in the canon books, Lionpaw meets with Heatherpaw in the tunnels. Here, however, instead we have Quailpaw meeting with Minnowpaw... I’m not sure where. Perhaps they were exploring ThunderClan territory and accidentally overstepped the borders, Quailpaw falling into the tunnels and them LARPing there? Anyways, both want to be warriors despite both having short fuses. Unlike in the canon books where after saving the WindClan kits Lionpaw and Heatherpaw’s friendship fades away, Quailpaw and Minnowpaw keep being friends, talking at Gatherings and occasionally asking Russetpaw, Willowpaw, Leafpool or Mothwing to tell them something or give them something when they come over to help. The kits they save here are Sneezekit and Mallowkit.

And as in the canon books, Lynxpaw trains in the Dark Forest. Tigerstar mentoring him honestly makes sense to me - there’s probably been several leaders named Tigerstar who have been colored like him given Tigerheart. Anyways, Tigerstar tells him he just wants to help him hone in on his powers. Of course, he wants to, so he trains in the Dark Forest.

Oh, also Russetpaw does have a power! At first Quailpaw tells her about his power and she pretends to be the one with it. However, after a bit, Leafpool figures out the facade and confronts Quailpaw about it. Russetpaw’s power takes longer to manifest, but she does have it, and it’s getting cats to tell the truth, basically hypnotizing them. She uses it a bit before she runs away into the tunnels to get cats to confess to breaking the warrior code, but after the reveal she decides that maybe she shouldn’t do that and instead uses it to figure out who’s training in the Dark Forest.

Anyways, onto Outcast!

Due to Brook and Stormfur formerly taking refuge in RiverClan, Leopardstar decides that one of their cats should go to the mountains as well alongside Crowfeather, Breezepaw, Squirrelflight, Tawnypelt, Quailpaw, Russetpaw and Brambleclaw. Lynxpaw volunteers, and his mentor (Dawnflower, Minnowpaw’s mom) therefore goes as well. Mothwing considers going, but ultimately doesn’t, instead deciding to teach Lynxpaw some herbs due to not fully trusting Russetpaw’s herb skills. He becomes a bit interested in them, but not enough to become a meddie.

After watching Lynxpaw during the battle with the rogues, Quailpaw tells him and Russetpaw a prophecy.

There will be three, kin of a great leader’s kin, who hold the power of the stars in their paws. Look for the sharp-eyed quail. Listen out for the lynx’s roar. After both of these events have come and gone, peace will come on a gentle russet leaf.

Russetpaw is certain that she and Quailpaw are two of the cats in the prophecy, simply believing that Lynxpaw’s prefix being mentioned is just a coincidence due to the commonality of the prefix.

Lynxpaw doesn’t know what to think about it.

The prospect of being important excites Quailpaw. The cats who doubt him won’t any longer when they find out he’s a prophecy cat! Or at least, that’s what he hopes...

Eclipse goes about the same... aside from Lynxpaw not wanting to fight Quailpaw! He just became friends with him, and might be in the prophecy with him!

Sol tells Lynxpaw that he can explain the prophecy. Lynxpaw decides that he should tell Mothwing and Willowpaw about it, and firstly tells the latter of the two.

Willowpaw and him both agree that the great leader is likely Firestar, but could also be one of the original leaders, leaving Heatherpaw and Breezepaw as possible candidates. Lynxpaw tells her that Quailpaw told him the prophecy, and she says that they’re possible candidates too. He starts to have low self esteem after this, but Willowpaw comforts him and the two basically get together but they don’t realize cuz they’re dumbasses.

The two of them then go to tell Mothwing. At first she’s hesitant to believe them - she’s never really seen StarClan as much of a higher force then the living cats, they’re just dead cats, they’re as reckless and at times mouse-brained as they were when they were alive. 

But she sees the glow in Lynxpaw’s eyes. It reminds her of what she loved about Leafpool. She sees Leafpool in the son she could never treat as her own. Believing Willowpaw to have received the prophecy (mouse-dung, we forgot to tell her that Quailpaw told me the prophecy), at the next Moonpool meeting she gives her her medicine cat name - Willowshine.

Due to how valiantly he fought in the battle, Lynxpaw is given his warrior name of Lynxcloud. Minnowpaw is given her warrior name at this time as well, as is Pebblepaw, with those two being named Minnowtail and Pebblefoot like in canon.

Quailpaw is also given his warrior name by Firestar, that being Quailwing after Mothwing.

Long Shadows is mostly the same except for one minor change, that being that Jay’s Wing is now named Quail’s Feather. Flamepaw, Dawnpaw and Tigerpaw help the Three fake an omen to get Blackstar to believe in StarClan again like in the canon books. The fire scene is also slightly different... but anyways, Russetpaw gets her full name of Russetleaf.

Now the fire scene... the whole reveal happens but afterwards Squilf reassures Russetleaf and Quailwing that she loves them as if they were her own kits, and that Brambleclaw does as well. 

Quailwing takes a while to accept it, still being confused about his power... StarClan has given cats powers before, but for all he knows he’s just a kittypet or rogue or loner who was brought to the Clan at a young age. And how does Lynxcloud fit into this? Eventually though, he accepts it, deciding to try to help whoever the Three are with whatever the prophecy requires them to do.

Russetleaf, however, can’t accept it. She’s a disgrace to her Clan and has no right to be a medicine cat. She should’ve known she wasn’t in the prophecy, she doesn’t have a power at all... Cinderheart notices something’s wrong and talks to her about it, and they get together and she starts to feel better, even if she realizes that she’s breaking the code... she’s stopped caring anymore.

Eventually though, Russetleaf’s power appears and she’s confused. She accidentally uses it without realizing after Quailwing finds out that Leafpool’s their mother, in an attempt to figure out who their father/sire is. Also yes, I did shuffle events... partially cuz I forgot the order they happen in.

Russetleaf carried the blood red berries in her jaws as she entered camp. No one questioned her, though she saw a few cats giving her weird looks. I have to do this, she thought.

As she entered the medicine cat den, Leafpool looked up at her, fear in her eyes.

“Russetleaf, what are you-” Russetleaf cut her off.

“I know now,” she hissed, “Mother. I may not know who our father is, but-”

The medicine cat cut her off. The tortioseshell tabby noticed that her eyes looked... focused on something else, as if in a trance.

“While she’s not your father, per-say, Mothwing sired you, Quailwing and Lynxcloud,” her mother mewed, “now, may I please leave the den?”

Her eyes looked normal again halfway through her second sentence. Still confused, Russetleaf nodded, allowing Leafpool to exit the den.

What did I just do?

She experiments with her power, seeing who may’ve broken the warrior code. Mousewhisker (relationship with Minnowtail), Squirrelflight (hiding the truth), Brambleclaw (same as Squilf), heck, even Firestar (giving prey to RiverClan, giving Yellowfang prey and eating some of it before bringing it to the Clan, hiding Graystripe’s relationship with Silverstream, probably more)! ... all of them admit it.

She begins to feel... power-hungry. While the Dark Forest has been unable to recruit her due to her loyalty to ThunderClan, they are able to do one thing: will her to kill Ashfur. Leafpool had taught her some fighting techniques she’d learned from Cinderpelt and Mothwing, she knows a decent amount, and uses them to kill Ashfur. To keep her Clan safe.

This starts to weigh her down. She feels terrible. She broke the code... but she did it to keep her Clan safe! ... didn’t she?

She can’t keep it inside any longer. She tells everyone the truth at a Gathering. Mothwing and Leafpool are exposed. Firestar doesn’t want to make her give up her position, but Leafpool insists on it, scared of what Russetleaf could do. Leopardstar, who’s always been a code junkie even if she made two half-Clan cats deputy, made one of Tigerstar’s kits temporarily deputy even though she (I think) knew he was Firestar’s son, allowed one of Tigerstar’s kits who was formerly a rogue to be a medicine cat, relinquishes Mothwing’s position.

Lynxcloud says he wants to talk to his siblings, and they all go to the tunnels. Russetleaf needs to tell someone what she did... so she tells her brothers. And she runs in. And it seems as if she’s gone... dead...

But two young kits have potential.

I think she was supposed to take after her aunt, Princess, and that's really cool, but unless you remember Firestar's siblings, you have to wonder where her pattern came from. She's a pretty good medicine cat, the first I've ever seen as wanting to be a medicine cat even if she recanted in favor of her feelings.

That rule is stupid. Do medicine cats have to give up their parents and siblings and friends as well? Make that the rule and I get why breaking it is such a crime. Pull the whole "you must give up all earthly things" thing that they have monks and other similar religious leaders do and I'll believe for a second that she deserved a trial. We didn't see Yellowfang or Bluestar get one. We didn't see Raggedstar get one for enabling Brokenstar. What the fuck, Erins?!

I wish her relationship with Crowfeather was more fleshed out. We got more of her oogling Mothwing and pages upon pages about how pretty the golden she-cat was but Crowfeather might as well have been a one-night-stand that she got pregnant from.

Like Bluestar.

Which makes it a lot more hypocritical that Bluestar and Yellowfang were at that "trial."

Goodness, StarClan is driving me up the wall.

The Erins did such a good job of portraying Mothwing through Leafpool's eyes that I'm actually not surprised there's a Mothpool fandom. It actually makes sense here. Leafpool didn't wake up one day and say the RiverClan medicine cat was pretty, she thought that gal was smokin from the get go. All the favors they've exchanged throughout the books could be because Mothwing doesn't believe in StarClan, but it's also a really good indicator that they're in love.

I really wish she had advocated for Jayfeather. I wish he wasn't forced into the medicine den by "destiny" (fuck you, Spottedleaf. And StarClan's warped version of Yellowfang.) He could have helped her out with herbs or interpreted a message but he didn't have to be a full-time medicine cat. He fought her every step of the way and it showed every single book.

Also: naming your son after the father he's not supposed to know he has is a major fuckup. Leafy, my girl, what are you doing?!

Speaking of major fuckups, are we just going to floss over the fact that Hollyleaf tried to kill her relative(aunt-turned-mother)? Yeah,it was a sign of her breakdown after she found out The Secret but damn, the words that spilled outta Leafpool's mouth made me wanna scoop her up. She and Squirrelflight inherited Sandstorm's tongue, for sure, because they are extremely good liars when desperate.

I think all of Squirrelflight's Hope was stupid so that's what I've got to say on that.

AU stuff

I wish she and Squirrelflight had the same pelt. Maybe a reddish brown. That'd be cool.

I think she and Crowfeather would have been better off as friends built up over time. Maybe he could help her navigate a relationship with Mothwing, but they never showed any true indication of wanting to be with each other. Crowfeather was getting over a broken heart and Leafpool was happy to go with it. Could they be friends? Absolutely. But as lovers... Either let them run away together or let them figure out they're not good for each other.

My personal AUs have Leafpool as a character who orients herself around others. She encourages cats. She heals them. She gives great advice. But taking for herself is foreign to her when she's spent so much time in service to others as a medicine cat.

Don't get me wrong, she's not subservient. She's just as feisty as her sister and in one of my fics she stands up to Firestar when he goes too far trying to keep Squirrel and Bramble from figuring out the message StarClan sent Bramble. She's a messenger for StarClan and she takes that seriously. But maybe she's a bit too serious about that.

Sorreltail remains a friend of hers. Leafy delivers everyone's kits but she coos extra hard over Sorreltail's.

She helps Brightheart and Cloudtail figure out what's up with their relationship. Cloudtail isn't in love with Daisy, he's ecstatic at the chance to prove that outsiders can make it in ThunderClan. He was given a lot of shit in the books so of course he would attach his success to Daisy and her kits. It's not something Brightheart picks up on because the Clan has always rallied around her and treated her well. But Leafpool knows stories that her father won't tell anyone. Mostly about his childhood and how he didn't fit in. It helps every now and then.

The medicine cats are more like co-workers than anything else. They're doctors and religious interpreters, so of course they'll side with each other over their Clans and turn to each other for advice. But their mileage varies. Cinderpelt, Little loud, Mudfur, and Barkface had different relationships with each other than their apprentices. So on and so forth.

In all of my fics, the "medicine cats can't have kits" rule is challenged. It's either abolished earlier than the first book because Mothflight's issues no longer apply, or spread to encompass all relatives and abolished later on because it proves to be a strain on mental health.

Leafpool tells her parents that she's pregnant in all iterations of my fics. Some of them, Squirrel tells Bramble. Some of them, Squirrel doesn't know and really does find them in the forest. She always suspects in those but surely her sister would never!
