…. So Mister(s) steal your girl, huh?

Unhappy Relationship, (Brief) Gaslighting, Sad Reader
Bombshells, you always thought, were supposed to making a whistling sound before landing. A high pitched warning of impending doom. Too late to escape the incoming devastation, but at least it wouldn’t come out of nowhere. There’d be some time to brace, for all the good it would do.
Maybe you watched too many movies.
Three months. That’s how long you got to enjoy the bliss of engagement before the world began to fall around you.
Your fiance came home and sat you down, his hand around yours. You thought he was breaking it off for some reason. What he did instead was worse.
In the aftermath you can only remember snippets of the one-sided conversation. Like tinnitus, an awful running in your ears left over from a dropped bomb.
Things like,
Still young, I want to explore…
How will I know you’re my forever unless I know what’s out there?
Last bit of freedom before being tied down…
If you love me and our relationship…
You love your fiance and your relationship. You don’t want to lose it just because you’re selfish. He’s still coming home to you, after all. You’re the one with the ring and all the plans for the future. So what if he wants to… explore? He’s even offering the same to you.
An open relationship, he calls it, like it’s some innovative idea.
You’ve heard of them before, never had much interest. Still don’t, honestly, but it was that or the desolution of 4 years.
You insisted on a long engagement. Your fiance promises that you two can revisit the open relationship when you’re married.
Within a week of agreeing, he’s leaves for the weekend. He doesn’t tell you where he’s going, who he’s meeting. He comes back Sunday evening smelling like someone else’s perfume with a hickey on his collarbone. When you refuse any advances, he sighs and says he “understands that this is a transition” and goes to shower.
It’s like that for six months. Weekends without him. Sometimes sending him off Friday morning and not seeing him until Monday evening. Lipstick on his collars, strange perfume invading the laundry. You start doing his clothes separately.
Six months. You spend months suffering in silence, sniffling through Saturdays and drifting through Sundays. Adjusting meal plans to cook for one.
The last straw is when you try to make plans on a holiday. You and your fiance haven’t done on a proper date in months. You want to go out, have all his attention on you, not shared with his phone.
“Ooh, sorry dear, I’ve already got plans with Malorie. Rain check, yeah? We’ll do something next week.”
You decide to go out anyway, sick of feeling sorry for yourself. Nothing fancy, just a bit of self care. You buy yourself a cute new outfit, put on a bit more makeup than usual, do your hair. Find an interesting little late night book shop. They serve wine and food and have comfy booths for people to read or talk or play board games.
The perfect place to be out but alone.
You’re debating the merits of a romance novel when a voice comes from your left.
“Love that one.”
You blink, glance up. Find a handsome man with eyes simultaneously so dark and so warm. Coals, you think. There’s a cheeky little quirk to his mouth as he nods at the novel.
“It’s good if you like will-they, won’t-they.”
You hum. “I’m more in the market for something… easier? If that makes sense.”
He hums, gives you a solemn look. “It does. Here, you might like this then.”
He plucks a book off the shelf and offers it for inspection. You feel awkward reading it the summary thoroughly, especially when you can feel his eyes on you. But you skim it, it looks promising, and a hot guy just suggested it, so…
“Read a lot of romance?” you ask curiously.
He ducks his head a bit, endearingly shy. “A bit, yeah. Call me hopeless.”
You bite the inside of your cheek, but can’t help saying. “I think it’s just romantic.”
His eyes light up. “Yeah? And what kind of books d’you usually like?”
Before you know it, you’re talking thrillers and horror novels with him. Recommending your favorite spooky novel and then following up that you always read a comedy afterwards as a palette cleanser.
You end up touring each other around the shop, talking books and authors and genres. Yet you’re somehow surprised when he asks if you’d like to sit with him. But you agree, a little thrill in your stomach that you haven’t felt since… a while.
You each buy a stack of books, then claim a booth and proceed to read none of them. He tells you his name is Kyle, that he’s in the military but on leave right now, stocking up on entertainment for flights or long spans of hurrying up and waiting.
You’ve never met a military guy before, and you trip over your curiosity. Trying not to pry but interested in what he does. He’s polite and patient, admitting there are a lot of things he can’t tell you but he’ll answer. You don’t stay on the subject long, figuring the last thing he wants to talk about it work.
He gets you back in the department of uncomfortable topics when he notices the ring on your finger. You’re quick to explain the situation, hot with shame all over again, eyes stinging despite yourself.
Instead of mocking you or just getting up and walking away, Kyle sits back looking flabbergasted.
“That’s fucking mental,” he says, “excuse me for saying.”
You burst into laughter. Haven’t told anyone any of this out of embarrassment, but hearing someone on your side is… good.
“I thought so too, but… he’s happy,” you admit.
Kyle frowns. “What about you?”
You blink, can’t look him in the eye. You know the answer but make a show of thinking about it.
“I’d… like to be again. This — the open relationship thing — seems to be working for him. So… maybe it’ll work for me too?” You shrug. “Worth a try.”
Kyle reaches across the table, a big warm hand enveloping yours. There are callouses you’re not expecting. Tantalizingly different.
“Would you like to try it with me?” he asks. “Don’t have to put a label on it or anything. But my schedule is a bit… it’s hard to keep up a traditional relationship, you know? But I like you, and I think your fiance is a knob.”
You snort, but flip your hand around, thumb brushing over his.
“Yeah…” you muse, and after saying it, a surge of confidence infuses you. “Yeah, I’d like to try this with you.”
His smile is absolutely brilliant. You won’t admit — not even to yourself for a long time — but you fall in love a little right then and there.

She closed her eyes as soon as she opened them, blinded by the sudden light. She was laying on a cold metal floor, she felt dizzy and had a strong headache. Her ears ringing, she couldn’t make out the sound around her but it seemed to be people talking.
She finally opened her eyelids to see a boy standing in front of her. “Are you okay?” he asked her, he was rather tall and had dirty blond hair, and he talked with a strong British accent. She sat and brought her knees to her chest to gather her thoughts before glancing up at him. She stared at him in silence, confused.
She didn’t understand anything. She looked behind and saw thirty boys standing up there, outside of the box she was in. The blond spoke again “Can you remember anything?” his voice felt far from the girl’s ears, her tinnitus distorting her hearing.
He got closer to her and repeated his question but she tried to distance herself from him before hitting the wall of the box. He kneeled beside the greenie and talked softly “Hey, no one is going to hurt you. I’m Newt, do you remember your name?”
She shook her head “Where am I?” she questioned him; panic could be heard in her voice. “I’ll tell you everything after getting out of this.” He told her but she didn’t move when he got up. She could listen to snippets of conversations above her “What are we going to do with a girl?” she heard one guy say, “A chick? I know how she could help us” another one said followed by loud laughter.
Newt could tell that she was uncomfortable and sent a look to a man, the latter shouted “Everyone! Go back to your work if you’re not a keeper!” The girl watched as everyone left, only a few boys staying.
The blond boy held out his hand for her, she grabbed it and stood up. He helped her to get out of the box, still holding her as she stepped on a box and put a foot on the grass. She quickly pulled out of his touch, uncomfortable under the gaze of ten guys whispering and staring at her.
She didn’t get anything What was a keeper? Why did they all seem shocked that she was gir- wait, why there were only boys? Ooh… she understood now. She was the only girl here. They started to explain to her about the loss of memory, the new greenie every month…
She watched around her and observed huge walls covered in vines and moss surrounding the field they seemed to be trapped in. But as the man that others called ‘Alby’, the one that told everyone to go back to their work, continued to talk she spotted someone sitting at a table.
“Who’s this?” she asked to Newt as she pointed at the boy. “Oh, it’s Leo, he’s a Runner but he got a day off-” he didn’t even have the time to finish his sentence that Y/n ran towards the Runner.
When he said his name, it was sure, it only could be him. She didn’t know why she was remembering him, but she was convinced, it was her brother. It was obvious, the more she looked at him the more she could recognize him. She was crying while the keepers were shouting at her to come back.
Leo stood up, not knowing what to do. Why did the girl was running to him? Before he could do anything, she wrapped her arms around him, and he could feel her tears soaking his shirt. “I’m so happy to see you,” she said as she looked up at him. He was too stunned to act. What was happening?
*:・゚✧*:・゚
Y/n shouted with all the strength she had, burning her lungs “LEOOOO!!!” as she ran after the WICKED guards before being hit by a bullet in the shoulder. She fell to the ground and shut her eyes at the pain.
Leo was taking away from her, men covered in black clothes were escorting his unconscious body to an aerial vehicle as other soldiers were still aiming their guns to Y/n. She couldn’t stop crying, she tried to protect her brother so much and now he was being abducted in front of her.
She was powerless in this situation, trying to get up as she pressed her hand against the wound, blood covering her forearm. She screamed as loud as she could when they took her brother on the plane, she couldn’t see him anymore.
She stopped fighting as the Berg flew away, breaking down, her shoulder shaking, allowing herself to cry, hugging herself in the cold air of the night. She was devasted and panicked, she couldn’t breathe.
*:・゚✧*:・゚
She screamed as the boys were pulling her away from Leo. “Please! Let me talk to him. It’s my brother!” She begged a tall guy with furrowed brows, Gally from what she heard, but he only lifted her and took her away from her brother. She tried to fight him but he was way stronger than her, she was struggling and still shouting at Gally.
Another guy helped him, keeping her legs away from the keeper of the builders. Everyone was looking at her screaming, fighting even if she knew she couldn’t win. They were whispering as she passed by them, hysterical.
The two boys placed her in a sort of cell dug in the ground and closed it sharply. She gave up and curled herself in a ball, crying, aggravating her headache. She fell asleep, exhausted by the recent events.
*:・゚✧*:・゚
Y/n stared at the sky, dried tears on her cheeks. It’s been two weeks since her brother’s been taken away and she felt incredibly lonely, she didn’t have anyone.
Her father died a year ago. The flare taking him weeks by weeks. Hopefully, he was always there for Y/n and Leo, he told them how to survive, hide from WICKED. They were targets for the organization, being immune they were in WICKED’s sights.
During their entire life, they had to flee from them. They wished that their father was an immune too but when he got attacked by a Crank and quickly developed the first symptoms, black veins appearing on his right leg, their hope died.
His state quickly increased, painful headaches and irrational anger getting him. When he thought that he could be dangerous to his children, Y/n’s dad left them, she tried to stay close to him but her brother stopped her. As they argued, they heard a gunshot.
They knew. They looked at each other, a tear fell on Leo’s cheek, and Y/n hugged him warmly. They were alone together now.
*:・゚✧*:・゚
The girl woke up by the sound of her cell opening. She saw Newt holding out his hand for her “C’mon, I’m going to show you the Glade” she stared at him, with a heavy heart she got up and went out of the cell, ignoring the second in command’s help.
He could tell that she’s been crying a lot, her eyes were bloodshot with dark circles under them. “You’re okay, greenie?” he asked her but she simply looked at him, he had his answer. “I know my name now, it’s Y/n” she told him. He smiled at her “Welcome to the Glade, Y/n”
They walked without talking before Newt broke the silence “Can I ask you a question?” she nodded slightly still staring at the ground. “Why did you say that Leo was your brother?” she glanced up at him and sighed.
“Because he is my brother maybe?” she responded dryly. He stopped in their tracks so she did “Hey” he said softly “I’m not accusing you of anything, I just want to know. No one remembers our past so I was surprised.”
She felt tears in her eyes but she stopped them from falling and cleared her throat “I don’t know, I just felt it, I knew it. I can’t describe the feeling, but when you said his name and I saw his face, everything connected. But him- He- he doesn’t remember me…”
He placed a hand on her shoulder as she cried “I promise I don’t lie. I came here for him, I know it.” He tilted his head “What do you mean?” she took a deep breath before responding “I had a dream in the Slammer. It was a memory.”
*:・゚✧*:・゚
She flattened herself against the wall, she didn’t want to be seen. She was following some WICKED guards, hoping they could, somehow, guide her to Leo. With a gun in her hand, she tried to be as silent as possible. She tracked those WICKED members for months, from the snippets of conversation she heard, they could be related to what happened to her brother. Today was the perfect day to follow them, they were supposed to go on a WICKED base, the closest she was from their weird experiments, the closest she was from Leo.
After some minutes of waiting, she got out of her hiding place. She aimed her weapon at the two persons in from of her before they had time to do anything she shot. She placed their bodies and a sort of closet she found. She undressed one of the guards, she had almost the same corpulence as Y/n, the girl put on the clothes and took their guns.
She acted as natural as she could, grateful that the WICKED uniform had a helmet. She passed by a group of people in the same clothes as her “What are you doing here? We have to go before the Berg flight away!” one of them shouted at her. With no need to be persuaded she came by their side. She followed them through hallways to finally reached a type of plane, the same one they took her brother away with. Her jaw clenched at the thought.
She sat, next to the others, her heart was racing, from what she heard they were going to a maze where they kept some immune kids to study their capacities. God, she hoped one of them was her brother.
*:・゚✧*:・゚
Y/n sat on the ground, the sun on her face, she closed her eyes. She got into the Glade two months ago which means that two new greenies came up, every time she hoped it was a girl but unfortunately she was supposed to be surrounded by boys during her entire life. She couldn’t help but felt a little jealous, they fit in more than her even though they came after.
She worked as a Track-Hoe, since no one seemed to like her Newt took her under his wing. He was her only support, Leo still not remembering her, she only had the second in command to rely on even if she mostly stayed alone.
He tried to understand her, but it wasn’t hard to believe that what she was saying was true, or she thought it was true when he saw the way she looked sad, even sadder than usual when Leo passed by Y/n without acknowledging her.
Newt talked about it to Alby, but the latter said that it didn’t matter if Leo didn’t recognize her, they didn’t have time to care about this. The least he could do was give her a chance to live in the Glade like every other boy but Newt hoped he could give her more than that. Y/n was grateful to him. She also told them about what she knew about WICKED and the Flare, they didn’t know if they could believe her but they didn’t put her thoughts away.
She looked up as Newt called her name “Come eat with us.” She got up and walked next to him, she hated dinner, it was the moment when she had to be close to boys. They were weird around her, it’s not just that she acted crazy on her first day, it’s also that she was the first girl they remember seeing so their hormones were on fire.
Everywhere she went she was always observed, she felt uncomfortable around most of the Gladers. Newt was quite the opposite, he always wanted her to be comfortable and didn’t hesitate to talk about the boys’ behavior to Alby.
Although the leader wasn’t comprehensive about Y/n’s relationship with Leo, he found intolerable the way some guys were acting toward her. Therefore, some rules were established. Whoever be tactile with the girl we’ll be sent in the Slammer and for a more important infraction, a council will take place with Alby, Newt, and the Keepers.
She sat next to the blond boy after taking her meal. The runners had taken more time than usual but nothing alarming so even if her brother was running that day, she ate her food but her peace was broken by screams coming from the maze doors.
*:・゚✧*:・゚
She watched the screens; they were showing the member of the Maze to the base she was in was related. Her heart missed a beat as she saw Leo on one of them. He didn’t really have a name anymore, a number next to him was his new identity.
She verified that no one was looking at her and looked down at the dashboard, searching for a button who could help her brother. As she placed her finger on one of them, a man grabbed her wrist “What you doing?” he asked her. She didn’t have time to respond that another person came next to her other side. The two men looked at each other, one of them grabbed Y/n, she tried to scream but the helmet muffled her voice.
The other WICKED member took her helmet out “You seem suspicious my little girl” he licked his teeth “And you seem young to work here.” She wanted to answer but she saw the look in his eyes, he had recognized her. During the time she infiltered the organization, she could observe some posters or files with the faces and names of the immune they knew and wanted to keep, she was one of them.
She felt arms grabbing her from behind “Hey! Put me down!” other guards were surrounding her. She fought as much as she could, receiving more hits than she gave. She was still screaming and crying, she was so close to the aim, so close to her brother, to Leo. But all of a sudden, she got hit in the head. Everything went slow, and silent, and finally, nothing. Just dark and emptiness.
*:・゚✧*:・゚
She got up and ran to the entrance as the shouts continued, Newt stayed behind her as her eyes widened at the scene in front of her. Minho was holding a bleeding Leo, he was slow, the weight of his partner attracting him to the ground.
At the same moment, the sound of the doors starting to close could be heard. Y/n’s heart missed a beat, she couldn’t let her brother die. Not after everything she did, even if it costs her life. The two boys were about ten feet away from the doors, they couldn’t make it alone. Without thinking she ran towards the runners; she heard the Gladers yelling at her to stay but she simply couldn’t. Of course, she knew the rule, but she didn’t care if she had to spend her following night in the Slammer. The girl quickly came on Leo’s other side, Minho looking at her like she was crazy. She placed her brother’s arm on her shoulder and glanced at the Keeper “We have to give everything we got.”
The entrance was smaller as the doors were closing, they sprinted as fast as they could. They didn’t how they made it, but they did; falling on the grass the second they went out of the maze, the doors closing right behind them. She took a deep breath and looked down at Leo, he was unconscious. She glanced up at Minho “What happened?”, she was clearly panicked, she struggled to breathe as the overwhelming feeling of all the Gladers around them.
The Runner swallowed hard “He’s been stung.” Y/n cried as some boys took Leo to the med-jack hut. Newt stayed next to her, “Hey… it’s going to be okay.” He murmured softly but she shook her head “No it’s not!” she regretted instantly how she talked to him “Sorry… didn’t mean to yell.” He reassured her and took her in his arms, her head hiding in the crook of his neck and her tears soaking his shirt.
“It’s going to be okay. You didn’t tell me something about him being immune” she lifted her head to look into his eyes, he placed a hand on her cheek to wipe her tears and she nodded. “So it’s supposed to be fine” he reassure her. She smiled at him, relieved to have someone she could trust. “I’m here for you. Don’t forget that.” He remembered her.
“Wait for me, I want to clean your wounds” he told her as he left. Her arms and legs had some cuts from the fell. About five minutes later, Newt came back with bandages and disinfectant in his hands. He kneeled next to her and took her arm. “It’s going to sting” he informed her as he poured some products on a cotton disc. She bit her lips and watched him healing a wound on her wrist. He continued with every single cut he could find on her arms and legs. After what he had to leave her, Alby calling him.
She spent the next two days worrying about her brother’s state. She didn’t even work, too anxious, Alby let her take days off until Leo will feel better. Newt finally called her “Y/n! Leo wants to see you” she stopped breathing for a moment and her mind was exploding.
She ran to the med-jack hut where she found Jeff waiting for her. He escorted her to Leo’s bed, and she sat on a chair next to it. “You’re okay?” she asked softly, he nodded and swallowed “I remember” he said as he looked in her eyes “You really are my sister…” he started to cry so she did. They continued to talk, happy to have found each other. Leo was apologizing to her for letting her down many times. An hour after, the runner fell asleep, still exhausted.
Newt is the first person she went to see and hugged him happily, he simply chuckled and embraced her back after she was looking up at him “He remembers me! And he is alive and safe!” she smiled widely. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile.” He said and she glanced at him, her brows furrowed but her beam was still present. “It suits you well, you’re cute when you smile,” he told her as he booped her nose. “You think I’m cute?” she asked innocently and he nodded, his thumb brushing the skin on her half-exposed shoulder.
The entire Glade was talking about this, Y/n didn’t lie and she wasn’t nut. She couldn’t help but felt a little irritated, no one believed her for two months but in a minute everyone trusted Leo. It was normal but still, it was annoying.
It’s been now a month since Leo remembered Y/n as his sister, and the Glade seemed more welcoming to her. She got closer to Newt too, or Newt got closer to her. He couldn’t help but felt jealous now sometimes, the boys were more around her but differently, it was not just physical, they were really interested in her.
She just refused another invitation from a Slicer, Newt next to her didn’t seem thrilled “Everything fine Newt?” he just nodded. She shook his shoulder lightly “Are you being jealous?” she smirked. He shrugged “No.” she looked at him and wiggled her eyebrows “Yeah sure. You’re really not jealous?” he shook his head but was smiling now “I- Yeah, maybe I am?” he was blushing.
She took his hand and stood up “You don’t have to be!” he stood up next to her and raised his eyebrow “Follow me…” she simply walked, still her hand in his. They reached a big tree in the woods, Y/n sat and Newt followed her. She placed her head on his shoulder and squeezed his hand “You really don’t have to be jealous.”
Y/n realized approximately a month ago that Newt liked her, it was obvious. She saw the way his cheeks and neck would go red when she was close to him or how his jaw would clench when another boy was too friendly with her. That day, when Leo recognized her and she hugged Newt, the way he was happy for her and was smiling at her, she knew she loved him. He was always there for her and supported her from the very beginning.
He was sweet to her whatever the situation. He was showing her around, helping her to make friends with people but keeping her away from the weird boys. It was thanks to him that she didn’t stay alone all the time, sometimes talking with Minho, Ben, and Clint.
She didn’t tell him about her feelings right when she knew, she wanted to be sure of how she felt. But now, she couldn’t be more sure.
She lifted her head and looked in his eyes “Did I ever tell you that you’re pretty?” he shook his head “Well, you’re pretty Newt.” He was even redder than before and cupped her face, then he placed a strand of hair behind her ear.
They both leaned in at the same time, their lips brushing. “Newt!” they heard someone yell, they pulled away, blushing mad to find Minho standing in front of them “I am interrupting something, right?” he said, his finger pointing at them. “What do you want?” the second in command asked sharply, the Runner chuckled awkwardly in response “Alby wants you.” After sighing, Newt got up, leaving Y/n and Minho together.
The Keeper looked at her with a smirk “Are you, like, together?” she shrugged and bit her lips. Minho was a good person, Y/n could totally trust him. He was a good friend she could rely on, his constant flirting making her more laugh than anything, it sometimes could make her feel uncomfortable but he would quickly stop and apologize.
A week passed, without Newt or Y/n talking about the almost kiss. Tonight, Y/n had a nightmare. One where she didn’t find Leo at WICKED, where she spent her life alone, where she found a Crank looking like her father. She woke up panting and sweating, she looked around her and found Newt in the hammock next to her. She didn’t want to wake him up, but she couldn’t stop the tears falling from her eyes.
She sat, shook his shoulder gently, and whispered his name, he awakened and rubbed his eyes “Everything’s fine?” he asked, his voice hoarse. He saw the tears on her cheeks and sat up, he cupped her face. “What happened darling?” she liked that nickname, it felt intimate. She swallowed “Nightmare”. He cooed and sat next to her on her hammock before hugging her “It’s not real, it’s okay. You are alright and safe.” He kissed her temple.
“Can you stay with me?” she asked quietly. In response he laid in her bed, placing her over him. Her head resting on his shoulder, her arms finding his neck. He wrapped his arms around her waist “Do you want to talk about it?” he whispered slowly. She shook her head and some sobs came out of her throat. He hugged her even more tightly, whispering sweet nothing in her ear. Newt waited for her to fall asleep before drifting off.
In the morning, they were waked up by the sun on their faces. “Hello sweetheart, you’re feeling okay?” she hid her face in the crook of his neck and nodded. They got up and started their day, but still stayed together. At night, since there was a new greenie showing up there was a bonfire. They sat next to each other, drinking Gally’s awful beverage, Y/n didn’t know if she liked it or not but all she knew was that it made her feel good after a long day.
They watched the Builder fighting, well winning, against other Gladers. Y/n yawned loudly “Shuck- I’m so tired.” Newt glanced at her “Want to go to sleep?” she nodded and rubbed her eyes. They walked towards her hammock, they stopped as they reached it. They stared at each other; she licked her lips as he got closer to her. He brushed the hair out of her face “You’re so pretty Y/n” he told her. She smiled and blushed “Thank you.” He felt her breath on him and leaned in, his lips brushed her and he looked up “Can I kiss you, darling?” she nodded. He placed his lips on hers, his hands on her cheeks as hers found his chest.
They pulled out for air after they don’t know how many minutes. Her forehead rested on his “I liked it. I like you.” He smiled as she spoke, “I like you too, love.” She brushed her nose against his as an answer “As much as I like you Newt, I want to sleep” she chuckled.
They laid on her bed in a sweet embrace. Her head in the crook of his neck, his mouth against her hair, her arms around his shoulders, his hands on the small of her back. She knew that one day they’ll have to get away from here when WICKED will decide to open the exit and they’ll have to fight the Flare. But with Newt, Y/n was the safest she’s ever been.
