After the players roll initiative, have them each roll a d6 to determine which D&D edition’s combat rules they’re going to be using for the rest of the encounter.

hi jasmine! just writing to let you know that your use of the word “decapitate” in this context is incorrect, as “decapitate” implies head (please see the etymology of “capit”). i believe you mean “severed”! thanks, finley
My darling Finley paradoxspaceoddity,
trust me, i don’t. every single greek god’s center of consciousness was located in their genitalia. i will not take this slander from someone who knows all the words to karkalicious.

paradoxspaceoddity replied to your post “there’s no way of knowing whether doctor who season 8 is a masterpiece...”
i would love to hear more of your takes on this because i was actually just thinking about these seasons today
Tumblr media
Moffat era hot takes incoming
season five of doctor who is actually genuinely pretty good—it has The Beast Below, Van Gogh, a very good River two-parter, and also the two thousand years thing. the companions lack lives outside the Doctor, but at least Rory is pushed to his limit as a character and changes as a result, as does Amy. compared to earlier seasons, eleven feels more like the point of view character than Davies era; at the same time, though, he grows and changes far less. but it’s okay, because he fails, and we see his flaws, and we respect him for it. doctor who is about having fun and being invested in the companion dynamic, and okay maybe I had a little less fun and was definitely less invested, but it was passable.
but there’s still a slip starting to happen. Steven Moffat, as a writer, loves crazy plot reveals that’ll hit the audience where they don’t expect. but to put it kindly. he thinks he’s so much fucking smarter than he is. all of seasons five through seven revolves around a crack on the wall, which is explained badly and used confusingly. season six involves... the doctor dying in episode one, and then every episode is more or less dedicated to figuring out how to stop it, and the solution still literally does not make any sense. i was so optimistic when season seven pulled off an actually sensical & interesting reveal about clara!! and then the season seven special actually makes so little sense that it makes me angry, i watched it five days ago and i could not explain it to you except for the fact that it BROUGHT BACK THE CRACK, WHICH THE SEASON SIX FINALE FOCUSED ON FIXING. who wanted that??? who asked???
there’s this idea of each episode needing to build towards the conclusion, and I don’t think that’s THE dumbest idea ever, but it doesn’t actually... work for doctor who? i think hbomberguy put it best in that sherlock is garbage video—the effect is that every episode is just introducing new questions and saying “keep watching and maybe you’ll find out!” Which could be fun, on a different show, but on doctor who the effect is it feels like it’s taking itself too seriously. in trying to be Dark all the time, it instead becomes... kind of laughable? also, it means that most of the episodes, as standalone stories, are like. just not good. they’re trying to build to a really convoluted conclusion instead of just trying to be interesting. none of the standalones are FUN.
ignoring all that, the biggest problem of 6-7 (which 5 doesn’t share) is that character beats get pushed to the side for those bad plot points. the eleventh doctor quite literally identifies himself as the man who forgets, his character conflict, in his second-to-last episode. which is actually a problem! we don’t get a sense of who he is and how much he cares about amy and rory in seasons six and seven, because the writers don’t actually care. amy’s pregnancy subplot is for the twist, not for her character growth; same with the evil river episode. amy and rory break up over infertility for one episode in the seventh season and it shits on any development they’d gotten in season five. the dynamic between amy and the doctor will be forgotten for like, a slew of episodes, and then maybe they’ll interact once. clara’s dynamic with eleven feels just generally lackluster. seasons six and seven completely lack respect for their characters beyond their use as plot tools.
and now we have... season eight. and there are still some definite moments where characters feel very undefined, they play with several varying characterizations for the doctor, a couple episodes are still duds. (Also I think there’s something kinda weird about introducing a black love interest just to kill him at the end of the season.)
however. the show actually makes an attempt at exploring its characters. Clara and the Doctor’s conflict is treated as an actual problem that both of their characters need to grow past: the Doctor via showing that he always did care with the forgiveness line, and Clara via growing her own life outside of the Doctor. I also just think their dynamic is straight-up fun—they’re both generally combative people, but also start to get each other. it’s fun to watch that growth.
also, the season just goes in fun directions! there’s a heist episode that is one of my favorite DW episodes now! the entire episode Listen is super convoluted but also really good? episodes are scary, creative, and genuinely entertaining to watch. the addition of Missy is the best thing to have happened on the show ever. and more importantly, the finale slaps! they resolve conflict between the doctor and Clara and leave them on a sad note, but a very in-character sad note that made me emotional! well-foreshadowed finale that makes sense, pays off character beats, and made me cry a lil... I love to see it.
this isn’t a perfect season of television (and so far season nine is better). however, doctor who is about having fun and cryin a little about the doctor/companion dynamic, and i had fun and cried about the doctor/companion dynamic. so I’m a fan.

PLEASE tell me about your star trek and social theory class omg. also hell yeah far beyond the stars slaps
Oh hell fucking yeah
So the general format of the class was we would get a paper on social justice to read, which we talked about when we met on Tuesdays so everyone understood it, and then on Thursdays we would watch an episode the prof thought was relevant to the reading, and we'd discuss afterwards how the reading and episode applied to each other
We read about an incredibly normal person who committed horrible acts during the holocaust and felt no remorse, then watched Duet. We read about labor issues, and then watched Workforce pt 1. For our final essay we were allowed to write about basically anything we wanted so long as it didn’t focus on the episodes covered in class, so I wrote an essay about how Lore is emotionally abusive.
We also just talked about general trends of the show, like how it's inherently colonialist and even though human characters do come from different countries, there's the idea that they all come from one human culture, and the alien species also tend to have one culture for the entire planet.

top 5 dog breeds! or top 5 songs right now :0
I like to believe that I love all dog breeds equally, so I’ll do songs right now:
1. Untangled by Khai Dreams
2. Taking Care of Things by Cavetown
3. The Real World by Owl City
4. Summer Song by Treelines
5. Old College Try by The Mountain Goats
Okay in reality I usually listen to one artist for like weeks on end (most recently it’s been Cavetown and Khai Dreams), but that’s a more diverse smattering I think

hmm.. daroach and galacta for the ask meme!
Daroach
1: Sexuality: Pan!2: OTP: MetaRoach or NebRoach, both very good3: Brotp: Him and Dmk probably, his crew as well4: Notp: him and any of the more childish characters (ie: kirby, bandee, etc.)5: First headcanon that pops into my head: he likes to read in his free time and prefers drinking tea over coffee6: favorite line from this character: (prolly one of the only kirby characters I could do this for, but I havent played Mass Attack, so heres one I found on the wiki thats sweet )
“Saving the world from darkness can be exhausting work. Don’t forget to take a break now and then.”7: one way in which I relate to this character: be gay do crimes 8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: while it can be cute sometimes he does canonically talk in third person9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?: problematic fave defGalcta Knight1: Sexuality: Bi but prefers men2: OTP: MetaGala dude do you even have to ask 3: Brotp: I feel like him and the meta-knights would get along well, him and mags could prolly talk about Halcandra and the ancients plenty too4: Notp: idk.. him and susie I guess? I dont trust her around someone as legendary as him5: First headcanon that pops into my head: He sealed himself the first time during a war between the ancients and the dark  matter, so his body wouldnt be possessed and used to cause mass destruction6: favorite line from this character: he has 0 dialogue so imma go from your fic: “Farewell my love” … “until we meet again.” He leaps forward and takes to the sky, soaring into the vast expanse of space above you. You watch him until hes a flicker in the distance, a single spark that shines like a newborn star7: one way in which I relate to this character: its hard to trust yourself sometimes so you should find someone you trust, who can in turn, trust in you8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: this knight… has the power of a few exploding stars in him, this can lead to unsavory situations 9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?: I wanna say cinnamon roll but hes canonically destroyed entire planets so well go closer to Problematic Fave

magolor and taranza for the ask meme!
(sorry this was kinda late, I didn’t see it till now!!)
Magolor:
Sexuality headcanon: I vacillate on if I see him as trans male, nonbinary, or cis male, but the constant is that he’s into dudes so I say “gay” for simplicity but its Complex tee em
Otp: MarxolorMarxolorMarxolor, Magochilly is also really cute
Brotp: Marx is his bestest bro but they’re also dating so I don’t think it counts here so uhh ima say Wave 3 Squad
Notp: With any of the younger kids like kirby obvs, I also am not a fan of shipping him with girls but that’s a personal thing
First headcanon that pops into my head: He absolutely loves seafood, something really rare and expensive on Halcandra, and the fact that it’s abundant on popstar blows his mind
Favorite line from this character: The gotcha bravo speech from TKCD, the absolute madman
One way in which I relate to this character: The loneliness and the difficulty in making friendships is a goddamn mood
Thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: Please… Stop selling merch of yourself, even though it works… his ego is through the moon
Cinnamon roll or problematic fave? Problematic but he’s on the road to recovery
—-
Taranza:
Sexuality headcanon: Bi!!
Otp: I ship spider boy and healing… I don’t have any strong ships for him aside from pre-corruption sectonia
Brotp: Wave 3 like I said above
Notp: nnnnooo kiddies, otherwise I don’t have any notps
First headcanon that pops into my head: He takes over ruling Floralia after Sectonia’s death and it’s a lot for him to get used to, it keeps him very busy much of the time.
Favorite line from this character: Not a line but that scene where he throws the fruit for kirby… good
One way in which I relate to this character: I too really like gardening
Thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: Taranza buddy… having your dead gf in your moveset won’t help you move on
Cinnamon roll or problematic fave? The cinnamonest of rolls

resting grounds, greenpath?
Resting Grounds: What location had the most emotional significance to you?
the abyss is an obvious answer so i wont say that
i’ll fully admit to avoiding the location where myla used to be. i literally never go into that room anymore. i take the lift from dirtmouth, usually, and will opt for that lift even if i’m closer to the entrance where myla used to be. i unironically and completely feel like i’m at the site of a crime scene–my crime–the site of a murder i committed–whenever i go there. so i dont. because i’m a weenie.
Greenpath: What part of the game did you find most difficult?
i think on its face that either goes to the watcher knights, lost kin, or failed champion, because those three are the guys that gave me the hardest time very early on because i was still fighting very aggressively and very angrily. like i knew logically from hornet in greenpath and other bosses around the map that the bosses would be tough and require a lot of dying and respawning and trying again, but i dont think i really GOT it until i got to lost kin (they were the first dream boss i fought). lost kin telegraphs their attacks like they’re a billboard advertisement, but i was still REALLY bad at it because i kept trying to walk in and beat the hell out of them, instead of dancing around their moveset, and every time i failed i just got angrier at myself for having such a hard time. i swear it was a whole spiritual journey of going from confusion to irritation to frustration to anger to cooling down to fury to realizing that the only way that i was going to get past this dude was if i worked WITH them and their moveset to try and save them; that was the first time i realized that boss fights in hollow knight are cooperative effort. i still remember lost kin as a huge turning point in how i thought about the game and i unironically adore lost kin even tho they have no canon personality or development or character at all
i just hate the watcher knights tho. no compelling backstory and they beat my ass for like 7 hrs straight bc i didnt have shadow dash. fuck those guys

1. What is your favorite Kirby game?
super star! robobots a close second though. (also conceptually, star allies)
5. What’s your favorite music track from the Kirby series?
any of galacta knights themes (if i have to pick one, the rtdl one.), marx’s theme, and the nightmare remix from star allies. you cant expect me to just pick one :pensive:
9. Which final boss is your favorite?
marx..............
also i just realized maybe this ask game might be skewed bc i had a period in which i played no kirby games from about the n64 to the switch (then picked up robobot)

you've probably covered this before, but i was wondering why you think jake is manipulative, especially in the scene where jane almost confesses to him? i always saw him as socially clueless, or just unconsciously manipulative perhaps, but it seems like a lot of the fandom disagrees
I dunno about “a lot of the fandom”, it seems to me like most of the fandom saw him that way (which I did too for a long time, and which I still see at somewhat true) but here’s some posts for reference on the issue:
