A Rant.

A lot of you have sent me asks about how JK's solo promotions isn't the same as Jimin's and other BTS members, about JK's rumoured all-English album, about BTS doing payola (you can read my views 4th paragraph from the bottom), about how HYBE has apparently destroyed the BTS OT7 agenda...

I don't want to answer y'all for two reasons:

Perhaps some of you are newer followers, but I can only repeat myself so many times. Don't you get bored of hearing me say the same thing over and over again? /gen

I don't share the apprehension, worry, or appetite for speculation and theorizing that I'm seeing from many people on Tumblr and Twitter.

It's very possible I'm the one in La La Land and you all have good reason to be concerned. But the way I see it, a lot of hysteria is being driven by two things: (1) a very myopic pov, as though the time between June 2022 and December 2025 is the most defining period of BTS's solo careers, as though this is the best and only time for any member to make a move, leave their mark, and thrive. And that BTS/BigHit is working on the same timeline.

(2) All these conversations are being driven by people who have brought that toxic hyper-competitive feature of k-pop, inwards, into the group, and now see the members as direct competition in the narrowest and most reductive sense possible.

And I just don't relate.

I don't feel sad for Hobi on how his solo roll-out was 'sabotaged' relative to Jimin's, I don't feel angry for Joon on how his roll-out compared to JK's, I don't feel confused at JK possibly having a full English album, if anything I'm even more excited by how he's pushing himself and I think it suits him given his pronunciation is one of the best in BTS. I know he'll be more involved than with Seven given how long he's been working on his album, I just hope he doesn't sacrifice depth in his artistic and lyrical expression for a shallow, wider reach.

In my very honest opinion.

When BTS talk about wanting to be together for a really really long time, I wonder if people have sat down to really think about what that looks like. Because maybe it's just me, but I don't think it makes sense for a company/group that has operated like BigHit/BTS, to shove their grandest plans for seven individuals into a ~3 year window. Right now, it's JK getting the push, he's been very vocal and consistent about his solo ambitions for the last 4 years, and I'm glad he's getting this shot.

Also,

While I feel BigHit has become bloated and inefficient, the boys are still capable handling their affairs and I feel very comfortable not having all the answers for a business and career that isn't mine.

I have my opinions about how things could be done differently, and I think if people want to voice their dissatisfaction to the company that's obviously fine, but I don't feel sadness, anger, or pity for any of the guys in BTS in Chapter 2. Not for my biases, not for Jungkook, and certainly not for Jimin. And it's getting tedious repeating my unpopular sanctimonious opinions to people who have already made up their minds and really ought to be more honest with themselves.

Speaking of Jimin, it continues to amuse me how the top group of people who just do nawt rate this man, is his solos. It's like dejavu for the discourse around OSTs circa 2018 - 2021 all over again. PJMs complaining about how BigHit was holding him back from doing OSTs, just for Jimin to say he wasn't interested at the time. Or how in 2022 people were fretting in my inbox about how only Jimin hadn't done any solo work/promotions yet and I would put out gentle reminders about how he operates and his tendency to leapfrog the rest when he's ready, then we started getting the producer pics.

Jimin has always been a 'bigger picture' kind of guy so how can anyone blame me for not taking this latest outcry seriously when that man continues to do what he's always done: work in silence, and wow with the result.

(Does anyone really think a man with no plans would be airborne every 2 weeks, and that a company with no desire to market him would be paying for and managing those plans?)

Not to be dismissive of people who wanted a stronger American push for Jimin's debut, while I agree he would've benefitted from a more targeted push, I genuinely think Jimin has always been better suited for Europe anyway.

Anon from yesterday said they envisioned Jungkook doing a song/video like Troye Sivan's Rush... I didn't comment on it yesterday, but Anon, personally, I've never seen Jungkook as capable of making a song like that. Jungkook will never make anything like that. The only person in BTS who has the range for that sort of provocation and subtext, is Jimin. And the market that will fully embrace that sort of art isn't America, it's Europe. In my opinion.

We'll see what his plans are.

Anyway, I'm not sure how more tactfully I can say this, but my blog isn't the place to be if you feel some type of way about seeing Jungkook succeed like this relative to your bias, if you think his promotion and success is at the expense of your bias, and so on. It's not even that I care about some vague OT7 ideal, it's that while I understand the anger and heightened emotions a lot of you feel, I just cannot relate to it. And it won't be enjoyable for either of us if you come to me with asks about it because we think very differently about the group and our relation to BTS.

childe is payola(/j). no but fr tho, whenever his faves release anything ever he is collecting albums and photocards until he has complete collection. he's rich and so will travel to south korea to watch his groups at inkigayo and music bank so he can get broadcast pcs. he's not creepy tho and so he's on "friendly stranger" terms with most of the idols in groups he likes. at this point, it's a game with his fans to find him in the background of any photos of groups he likes leaving/entering a music show. can see him liking a mix of groups, so probably twice, aespa, cherry bullet, and loona

heizou loves any and all groups that have lore. pixy, loona, stray kids, etc. if they have some sort of lore, then you can count on heizou being a fan of them. probably doesn't collect all that much, he usually just buys one version of an album and accepts whatever photocards are in it like a weirdo. definetly does streams going through groups music videos/etc to look for lore and make theories

It’s me, hi. I’m back. Your favorite minority opinion army. With 3D looming this week, I thought I would rant my thoughts again about this more “mature” direction that I won’t lie, hope it’s not more mature than Seven in the same sexual, heteronormative way. Especially if a music video is involved. Still haven’t watched the Seven MV and I never will so cancel me idc 🤭

The thing about me is I’m 30 years old. I have a PhD and I’m not going to watch and like every single thing the boys put out. I love JK. I wish he wasn’t hell bent on entering in the Western, specifically US market because it’s super toxic and if you are just aiming for mainstream radio play, it’s pretty boring these days too. Idk Troye Sivan has put out two BANGERS recently and I just can’t help but miss the shy younger JK who loved Troye Sivan instead we have these heavily paid for, manufactured collabs with artists I don’t think he cares about or has listened to at all. Maybe Troye is “too gay” for him to collab with these days because JK is just so famous, and I know he still queer codes, but I still just wish for less heteronormativity. I’ve listened to Jack Harlow here and there. I actually tutored someone who went to HS with him and was friends with him. And he’s exactly what you think. The straightest white boy. Perfect for all the cis hets screaming every five seconds that JK is straight. I *know* he’s not (as much as I can know without actually knowing) but it’s disappointing and exhausting nonetheless to see constant y/n Stan’s thinking that have a chance with our Kookie when he’s very much so taken. And I love that he makes a point to showcase how much of a priority Jimin is to him. I just wish that his music was more introspective and reflective of who he is as a human soul.

Basically, I don’t have much hope for this. I expect to hate it if it is going even further than Seven on the sexual side. I expect to not watch the music video, which hopefully there isn’t one. If anyone else feels as melancholy as me, hi I see you. And Get Me Started and Rush by Troye are both bangers. Wish JK still acted like Troye existed instead of these payola collabs.

Even though Directioners strongly resisted the idea of 1D splitting and Harry going solo (going as far as writing essays about how Harry would never ever ever x 1000 go solo, that Irving and Jeff Azoff were here to save One Direction— giving them cute nicknames like Papa Azoff and Mochi Corden etc.— calling people who didn’t support all the boys “anti’s and cunts,” and then eventually morphing into Harries who called fans who disliked Harry’s solo career “Rads and cunts”)— still, eventually, month by month and year by year, Sony and capitalism won.

The same thing happened to Fifth Harmony.

The same thing is happening to Little Mix.

Sony picked out the guy we were supposed to support. Fans acquiesced.

However, the story doesn’t exactly end with the demise of OT4, while Harry bathes in cash as winner of the hunger games. Harry is still — as are they all — “from One Direction.”

OT4 aren’t gone. Louis and Niall are touring quite successfully. Zayn is making his fourth album.

The music industry’s power players— heads of big labels, the big managers, the CEOs of streaming services and radio companies— still have a stranglehold on the feed to consumers, but there are ways of circumventing it through social media. One can still tour without radio play, without payola. Big artists like Louis can lift up smaller artists, and fans will respond.

It’s all David vs. Goliath and industry is still winning by miles. Fans generally do act like lemmings. But occasionally, something good happens, and some good artists are heard, and get followings. Occasionally good music is made and the artist survives.

I think popularity also depends on what you’re known for. Ppl can be popular but nobody cares about their music. Cha eun woo, for eg. They just care about his visuals.

The demographic of ppl who know or follow you counts. Take exo and sm groups, kpop stans token groups but when it comes to listening to their music no one gaf. Comparatively, look how when lsf is doing even though they’re getting hate twt upon hate twt. Even new jeans doesn’t get likes on twt or have a huge fandom but even without the payola they have ppl tuned in to their music( hype boy)

The kpop demographic outside of maybe armys and a few groups don’t care as much for the music. They’re more here for the competition, visuals, drama, etc. So most labels are trying to promote their idols outside of kpop stans when they want streams using playlisting etc.

Jm has fans outside of kpop demographic. And his fans inside the demographic are loyal and serious about music. Ppl were tuned in for his solo. Some to hate, some to like. But they were tuned in. That’s what a lot of idols don’t experience. Tbf his popularity in terms of likes and engagement isn’t stable cos he has haters reporting and armys have black listed him and his fb internally, and he himself isn’t active on socmed. But music wise he’s popular.

TMI, I actually heard Filter as a non fan before I knew about jm and checked it out, saw it was tagged to BTS and didn’t tune in cos I hated armys back then (yes, I regret it now)

As long as jimin is thriving in his career and successful that’s the only type of popularity that will ever concern me.

Jk solo Stan’s and their jealousy and insecurities need to be study. Jm achieved everything Jk achieved WITHOUT the privilege of have all the resources Jk had. Jimin has been #1 on South Korea’s Spotify for what…170 days (or something around that number).

Jk had multiple versions so now they are saying Jm has versions too. They are saying that BigHit is using Jk to promote Jimin because if you search “Jungkook Closer” on Spotify Closer Than This pops up too. Yet, I search “Jimin Closer Than This” on Spotify, and JK’s whole solo album was on there. Two of Jin’s songs were on there. When I searched it yesterday, Sexy Nukim was on there. Jk solo Stan’s are trying so hard to start some shit.

Jk wouldn’t have gotten hate during his solo if Jk solo Stan’s (and others) hadn’t attacked Jimin when FACE was released. I don’t agree with anyone get called names but you can start something by attacking Jm and then get mad when PJMs retaliate. Thinking of physical confrontation is a bit of an overreaction?Taekookers are acting up because they are now getting taekook content.It is higly unlikely anyone from that group will hurt JK or Jimin.Specially when JK is half of their preferred ship.Also on twitter more Tae fans fight on behalf of Jimin against Taekookers than Jimin fans do for Tae against Jikookers.No one is physically attacking anyone.

This type of inflammatory remarks and overreaction should be reserved in thoughts only.

Excuse me, Nonie, but no, absolutely NOT. Now is exactly the time to raise the alarm.

I'm not sure which parts of Twitter you hang out on, that you can remain blissfully unaware and think the majority of Taekookers fight on behalf of Jimin or champion JK as half of their ship (instead of treating him like a prop), but why don't you join some JM and JK report accounts for a few weeks and take a good long look at the daily hate comments, death and rape wishes, stalking tips, and targeted attacks toward JM and JK fans? Stay on those accounts for at least a month so you can see how many Taekookers get suspended and then make new usernames and come right back on to keep doing it. The volume will shock you.

Now I would expect some cat-fighting online and for Taekookers to constantly comment on their ship on the Vlives. People are people. But unlike the other fanatics and shippers, unhinged Taekookers and Jimin-antis have:

--doxed Jimin's personal info online (a huge security risk)

--published photos and private info about Jimin's family members (invasion of privacy)

--bashed JK and Jimin in group chats and then campaigned online by trending the "Free Taekook" type hashtags (defamation, lies)

--paid serious money to fly to Korea and show up at the airport with "Taekook is Real" signs where the boys saw (proximity, extreme behavior)

And in an effort to prove their ship and out two supposedly closeted members, Taekookers have harassed:

--a child from a music video

--Tae's hairdresser

--a necklace maker

--a ring maker

--collaborating musicians and artists

--models on instagram

--models in Paris

--an actor whose partner died

--JK's brother

--JK's tattoo artists

That's just what I have seen as a very new Army and remember off the top of my head. I'm sure if I went digging, I'd find more.

And look, Jikookers aren't angels--there are assholes in every subset of humanity. Jimin, Tae, and JK deserve better from everyone. But no one else is doing this amount of sheer toxic crap. Don't equate what some asshole Jikookers say about Tae; there's no way it's on the same level. This isn't normal fan behavior. They don't just celebrate their ship. Big accounts keep whipping up anti-Jimin sentiment and false narratives about Tae and JK. They flat out LIE. And I and other Armys are telling you: it is escalating.

Three years ago, Taekook fans used to say things like "Jimin and JK are just doing fanservice; Tae and JK's relationship is real and not for the cameras." Which was rude but not insane. NOW, some Taekook fans go around saying things like "Jimin is a slutty fat pig, a no-talent whore leech, who brags about doing charity work to cover up dodging his taxes and his father's right-wing connections, all while he fucks Bongo for payola on his songs that he makes with rapists, and then he forces poor Tae to watch him use JK's body for fanservice to appeal to Korean Jikook fans for money."

This kind of fantastical bullshit goes round and round until more and more people start to believe some or all of it (or they stop fact-checking it and shutting it down because it's exhausting). It's not just defamatory, it's dangerous. It's right up there with the smear campaign that Hillary Clinton runs a child sex trafficking ring out of the basement of a pizza shop in DC. Folks laughed that off and said not to indulge such fantasies with attention, right up until a crazed patriot with a gun showed up to shoot up the place.

Am I saying FOR CERTAIN that antis and/or Taekook fans are going to attack a BTS member? No, of course not. I don't have a crystal ball. But I am saying their unacceptable behavior is escalating, and BEFORE it turns into orchestrated blackmail or becomes violent towards members or other fans who don't support the Taekook narrative, we all need to shut it down. The company, the members, Army, and other Taekookers especially need to work to shut it down.

There are crazy people in every fandom and always have been and it shouldn't be our responsibility to police their thoughts--but their actions reflect on all of us. And unfortunately a few psychos is all it takes to make a huge problem for everyone. This rabid subset of Taekookers are going from having feelings and opinions to having a faith narrative and taking invasive actions. So rather than sit around clutching our pearls or rolling our eyes or keeping our thoughts to ourselves, NOW is the time for Army to recognize the extent of the problem and actively call it out.

If after you do a bit more investigating into the dark side of BTS fandom, you still think I'm being inflammatory and uncalled for by raising red flags here--come off anon. Comment on this post. State for the record your defense of Taekookers. I'll bookmark it and circle back with you in a year. And if by then, everything died down on its own, and Taekookers didn't keep escalating their anti behavior, I will personally apologize for over-worrying and remove this post.

I hope I'm never too proud to admit it when I'm wrong. But Nonie? I'm not wrong. Our community needs to check this behavior before it gets so far out of hand that people get hurt. If that stance seems too controversial to you, it might be best we part ways here.

As for the situation, there is just so much misinformation, lies and jealousy being spread, exaggeration about the amount of versions and etc. In jungkook’s live, he said official promotions are over so he only got 7 days of promo (ironic lol).

The rush to get everyone enlisted quickly is annoying because it feels like people aren’t really able to have their own “eras.” From a western perspective I was thinking solo debut wow that SHOULD be months long of promo right? But what we’re getting is rushed. Ofc yoongi went on tour but that was a personal decision and I don’t think I’d a sign of privilege- he has a lot of solo songs.

Anyways I agree that the company didn’t react well to the rule change for Like Crazy and allowed it to free fall embarrassingly. I also heard it was sent to radio but didn’t get many spins.

No, I wouldn't be celebrating because I'm not a double face person. Anyone who reads me and knows me can vouch for that. I couldn't celebrate Jimin being treated nicely while Jungkook got scraps because I care about about of them. Yes, I love Jimin the most but I care about both.

I haven't dropped Jk. I'm not judging him for the choices he's making. Go and read my posts. I question things because I want them to make sense but I also know, and have stated, that I would probably do the same as him if I was in his shoes.

There is no exaggeration of what has been said. It's just that the truth hurts and people would rather avoid it. It's not ironic that Jk got 7 days promo...sigh.. that was the whole point -_-

All the hype didn't matched with the song

1. rest members songs had so much depth and substance to it while this was the cliche boy chasing a girl song. Like we always dont need deep songs but the quality could be so much better. This was like just another pop song.

I think I'll put this on same level as BAD DECISIONS. But for bad decisions, atleast the chorus was staying on my mind while for this nothing was catchy enough for us to humm. Just because it's JK it will get hype but otherwise it's so generic. I think I liked LEFT and RIGHT way better than Seven. Even the rap portion felt so unnecessary and boring.

2. MV was kinda nice because of the production but concept was too shallow, the stalking and chasing was so outdated. In my country we have like 9293928843837 MVs in this same concept that not many make the same theme songs again.

3. The choreography. We haven't seen the full version. But for tiktok they do the highlight portions if that's so mediocre idk how rest will be. It was again giving the same mediocre showing off choreography and for me backdancers ruined it with their awkward moves.

4. they wanted this song to be played everywhere around the world. But there was nothing catchy enough to attract gp or go viral on tiktok, even if we sped it up. The only way to make everyone listen is to shove it down their throat but doing payola. But idk if investing in payola is worthy for the song. I also doubt the longietivity, as for me it was boring after 2 listens. I'll rather listen Like Crazy or wildflower or closer 20 times than listening this once.

5. I HOPE he'll bring something fresh to the table for his album and don't involve this mediocre producers who uses the same formula and same superstar persona to make a song successful. He is so much talented to sing a song which is so rich in melody and lyrics. And he can produce way better songs by himself.

I don't mean that in a 'I expect the things JK to make to be gay' way just in the way it's a fun, very danceable, sexy summer song that doesn't pull its punches. I’ve streamed Seven about 20 times since then I think, took a break from the song for a few hours, watched his GMA performance, caught a few minutes of the Wlive, then listened to it again just before writing this post and…

I still don’t like it.

Jungkook did a good job on the song, Latto's verse wasn't terrible, and while the song itself isn’t bad… the song isn’t good either.

It’s painfully, and at this point it’s a pattern so I have to add, predictably, mediocre.

Reserving judgement for the album, but Anons, I agree with you for the most part. The suits at BigHit are trying but they are woefully out of touch with the reasons BTS blew up in the West in the first place. I don't even feel like spending any energy doing a review or even trying to explain what I mean. So I'll just ramble on for a bit but try to keep it brief.

I have to give BigHit some credit because I can see what they're going for here. Andrew Watt is a very celebrated producer in the US, he won the Grammy award for Producer of the Year in 2021, he's got A listers in his portfolio. So, he's not a cheap name to book and I can see why the suits at BigHit thought he's the genius to gift them a song clinically designed for American radio.

But that pandejo phoned it in. There isn't a lick of creativity to be found anywhere in all 3 minutes and five seconds.

It reminds me of VIBE by Jimin and Taeyang, as the closest analog to the vague dissatisfaction morphing into annoyance and then pragmatic rationalization I experienced in that same sequence when listening to it the first few times.

The song is disappointing because we've all heard it before. Too many times, and we're bored of it. We've heard JK sing this sort of song for years, as covers mostly. So on one hand, while I guess it's nice JK gets to have an American summer JB-reject pop tune of his own, it's not good enough to be the track that introduces him to the world as a solo artist.

It's fine for any white, blonde, blue-eyed heartthrob that can ride on a pretty face and implicit bias to rack up accolades, it's not good enough for Jungkook.

And BigHit needs to start using whatever leverage a US$10.6 billion market capitalization buys you in Hollywood, to insist for songs that are at least as good as the songs made by BTS members and produced by their in-house team. It's a waste of money and everybody's time to fly a battalion to LA just to record 2014's summer hit in 2023.

All that said, I can't ignore JK has a taste for songs like this, and it's not his fault the song is shit (he didn't write, compose or produce it), so technically he shouldn't be punished for it. And the song is made for radio, while it's not my personal taste a lot of people really like the song (one of my friends likes Seven the most out of all the BTS releases so far), and it will catch on with some support. So, ARMY will support it including me, just to a lesser degree than I've done so far. Fingers crossed JJK1 has something solid on it.

the fact that some people are genuinely buying into seven using payola because of the numbers it's pulling must have their heads under the sand. I haven't seen this many casual fans and just random locals talk about a BTS release since Butter. Seven is a fun catchy pop song by a member of the biggest boy band in the world, with one of the most anticipated debuts, like of course it's going to break records...

Yes the TGM dogfight football scene is candy for the eye, but hear me out: the Top Gun original volleyball scene still remains the most homoerotic scene ever made.

Because it is so natural and real and effortless.
