Ok people wanted to hear my thoughts about Phoenix wright characterisation and I am very down!!! So here take this
Just a fair warning, I know a lot of people haven’t played the aj trilogy, I’m gonna talk about spoilers for aa4 in this
Mainly I just hate when people make Phoenix stupid. He’s a lawyer, he passed the BAR EXAM, he’s not some oblivious little stuttering twink. It especially pisses me off when people act like he relies soo much on his bluffing. Yeah he bluffs, but he knows they’ll stick because most of the time he’s figured it out, he just doesn’t quite know how to get there. He’s smart about it. And he’s not always bluffing! Most of the time he knows what to present! It’s just when it gets to peak ace attorney trial insanity that he has to try his luck. Also, he tells people to die in his mind guys lmao. He’s not outwardly mean, but also he’s not some innocent little uwu smol cinnamon roll.
In a similar vein, and I’ve only started noticing this recently cus I’ve been reading a lot of college au’s, but people write Feenie like he’s a damn toddler. He’s an 18(?) year old man studying for a law degree. Yeah he’s gonna be a bit immature, but he’s not some bumbling idiot who just smiles all the time. I sort of get it because we didn’t get a lot of time with him but STILL! He acts stupid during the trial yeah, in no small part cus dahlia/iris(I’m sorry iris ily) had been manipulating him and he couldn’t believe she would try to hurt him. Which is a little dumb! But also understandable for an 18 year old who’s just been told his girlfriend was trying to kill him/frame him for murder!!! And after the trial when he’s talking to Mia, he gets serious. For most of the trial he is a little bit of a Larry, but the end shows that he’s not an idiot!!
AND THIS ONE PISSES ME OFF THE MOST, and it also involves mischaracterisation of Kristoph. So many people who write krisnix, which I’m all for tbh love some toxic old man yaoi, write it like Kristoph was an evil manipulative abuser and Phoenix was some oblivious smitten victim. Guys. In like one of the first cases of aa4 I’m pretty sure, Phoenix talks about how he knew who Kristoph was and what he did, he only kept him around for so long to get proof. Again, he’s not oblivious!! Plus, he was manipulated by Dahlia in a pretty similar way to Kristoph(which is something else I could talk about forever), so he knew what to look for. And yes, Kristoph was a piece of shit, but he wasn’t obvious about it. That’s how he got so many people to trust and believe him, he’s charismatic and he knows how to make people like him. And only once they do does he start his bs.
Granted, Phoenix is a little hard to get right, especially because originally Shu Takumi designed him as a sort of self-insert for the player, with his thoughts being based on Takumi’s own thoughts about the trials. But a lot of people just take a single trait and run with it and it annoys me so bad anyway I hope u enjoyed

Welcome to the Ace Space!
Call me Ace! I use she/him pronouns and I'm 21.
Tumblr media
This is my primary blog! If you're looking through my profile because somebody's been liking your Pokéblogging posts, my active Pokéblogs are @humming-pokemon-helpers, @swagtastic-bougie-pompadour, @wigglytuff-guild, @pkmnathlete, @malie-city-library, and @mc-pokeprincess. Happy to talk about them OOC here too!
Otherwise, this blog is where I reblog stuff (sometimes with commentary), talk about my favorite fluff ships & series info, post the rare fics I complete, and sometimes even talk about life!
My main fandoms are Pokémon (most common), Undertale/Deltarune, Ace Attorney, Fire Emblem, and Splatoon (mostly for Pearlina content), but occasionally I'll talk about other series that interest me. Under the cut for post-shortening's sake.
Most of my ramblings are pretty much just character headcanons/interactions, but at times i like to focus on world-building/larger theories, and I'd love to connect with other people with those interests in my fandoms (especially Pokémon SWSH and SV!!)
Also, if anybody ever wants to toss me some writing requests, feel free! Just know I make no guarantee of speed. (If you want to see my writing, here's my AO3!)
A few things to note about me:
This should generally be a SFW blog! Please keep any asks/requests or the like SFW, but as long as you're respectful, anybody can interact.
I post a lot about ships I like! More below the cut. I try to tag 'em.
I try to be canon compliant. I make no guarantees of that.
Maybe I'll post OC stuff here one day???
If you're discriminatory towards any marginalized groups (racism, sexism, homo/transphobia, ableism, fatphobia), I reserve the right to block freely. Likewise, if I say/repost something that makes folks uncomfortable without realizing it, please let me know! Happy to correct myself.
Other reasons I'll block people: being rude, posting pro-ED content, posting pedo stuff, actively hating on my faves. Probably other stuff that squicks me I'm forgetting right now, too.
That's most of the important stuff! Please feel free to reblog, I'd love to find some mutuals here I can talk about shared interests with!!
Favorite characters/pairings/hobbies below the readmore! It's a lot. You have been warned.
My Faves!
Tumblr media
Characters (top favs in yellow, sorry the list is so long,,,):
Hop (Pokémon SW/SH): I could rant about this boy for days and still not have said enough about how much I love him as a rival and character. He is the best thing to come of out SW/SH. And besides, we love Wooloo enjoyers.
Nemona (Pokémon S/V): She has so much passion and energy for battling!!! She genuinely just wants to connect with someone even though she's so misunderstood!!! Also, she can't handle exercise. I feel you, girl.
Hanamaru Kunikida (Love Live! Sunshine!!): I'm not much of a Love Live fan anymore, but I still love Hanamaru so so much. She is sunshine and light and sweetness and a bookworm and she gets so much joy out of enjoying food and spending time with her friends. A comfort character of mine.
Noelle Holiday (Deltarune): She's such a nervous little dork who's actually just a freak (affectionate), and honestly that is peak young lesbian representation.
Kris Dreemurr, Ralsei, Susie (Deltarune): Please ask me to rant about them individually. I love all of their writing.
Pearl Houzuki (Splatoon): I live for her gremlin energy. Yes, even the eating mayo straight from the bottle. I also admire the fact she managed to pull Marina.
Marina Ida (Splatoon): They really did make the coolest, prettiest hacker girl who loves anime and manga and said "make her fall in love with the scrungliest little squid".
Ashe Ubert (FE3H): He's just a little guy!!! A little fella!!! Love his voice acting, his love for books, cooking, and honor, and his tragic backstory. Poor boy.
Ibuki Mioda (SDR2): Is Danganronpa a great series. No. Did Danganronpa give us the most beautifully chaotic lesbian I have ever seen and then cruelly rip her from my hands far too soon. Yes.
Trucy Wright (Ace Attorney): Please, Capcom, please remember she exists, I am begging you. Yes she's another "teenage assistant putting on a brave face so she can help solve the mysteries". But I love her magic tricks and her interactions with Phoenix and Apollo, so here she is.
Apollo Justice (Ace Attorney): Please stop giving him backstories.
Bianca, N, Yancy, Skyla (Pokémon B/W/B2/W2)
Gloria, Marnie, Victor, Bede, Leon, Raihan (Pokémon SW/SH)
Arven, Penny, Clavell (Pokémon S/V): If you want more Penny and Clavell, I write them constantly on @swagtastic-bougie-pompadour.
Lillie (Pokémon S/M)
Nagito Komaeda (SDR2): No defense here.
Komaru Naegi (DRAE): I do not like UDG for many reasons. I do like Komaru.
Miles Edgeworth, Phoenix Wright, Maya Fey, Klavier Gavin (Ace Attorney)
Rin Hoshizora, Umi Sonoda, Kotori Minami, Ruby Kurosawa, You Watanabe, Emma Verde, Rina Tennoji (Love Live!): My grab bag of gay people. I also generally love most of Aqours.
Edelgard, Caspar, Linhardt, Mercedes, Annette, Marianne, & more (FE3H)
Pretty Much Everyone In Undertale.
Dusa, Artemis, Zagreus, Thanatos (Hades)
My OCs! Feel free to ask about them.
Tumblr media
Personal ships!
Mostly in the "I like the dynamics" sense, rather than the "I think these two would be perfectly well-adjusted together" sense. Ships with minors in them are purely fluff.
Hop/Gloria/Marnie (Pokémon SW/SH): Hop/Gloria is my main focus, just because I think their high energy (in my headcanons, anyways) play off of each other really well. I also like Gloria/Marnie for sunshine/serious. I also like Hop/Victor. I think about the Sw/Sh characters a lot.
Nemona/Juliana (Pokémon S/V): After 君と雨上がりを and Biri-Biri, they're canon. But also, you can't just ask someone to be your best rival like that!!!
Pearlina (Splatoon): They were literally built for each other. They are perfect. I will pull out a thesis on the Octo Expansion and Splatfest dialogue. Do not make me do that.
Caspashe (FE3H): Three words. Gay cat dads. (I also like Casphardt.)
Edeleth (FE3H): Yes, I'm basic. Speaking of basic:
Wrightworth/Narumitsu (AA): Like I said. Basic.
Klapollo (AA): I just find 'overly flirty guy and straight-faced serious guy who believes not a word of it' such a fun dynamic.
Suselle (DR): May I please point you to the ferris wheel scene as a whole.
Alphyne (UT/DR): Just a classic. They're cute and complement each other really well.
Komahina (SDR2): In the sense that "I think if you leave them in a room for enough time the room will literally explode". They're fun because they're so terrible. And on very, very rare occasions, fool you into thinking they're not.
Mikan/Ibuki or Band-Aid (SDR2): Let's be honest, 2-3 was a cop-out.
Rubymaru (Love Live! Sunshine!): Sunshine and sweetness.
Standard Love Live ships (When I say standard, I mean basic.)
Tumblr media
Hobbies/other interests! (Alternatively: Ace Touches Grass)
Cooking/baking! I don't post my food much, but I do tag food.
Writing: I started out with Club Penguin fanfiction at age 8 so you know I'm the real deal.
Practicing Japanese! I like to practice by listening to Japanese music (Ado/Suisei/Polkadot Stingray/Aqours/Vaundy/King Gnu/YOASOBI) and playing games in Japanese.
Archery! I got to try out kyudo in Japan. Best thing I ever did.
Sightseeing, trying new restaurants and foods!
Libraries, I work at one!
Reading (one book, in two days, every 6 months.)
Psychology! Mainly clinical and developmental psych.
Collecting stuffed animals and other cute things!
Animals! Favorite are penguins and foxes :)
RTGame, the Drift King Himself
Bad Karaoke (in Japanese.)
If you got this far, thanks for at least skimming over my post! Hope to make some new friends, allies, or maybe at least queer-coded rivalries here on Tumblr.

Ace Attorney and Danganronpa

Chapter 1
Takaaki Ishimaru had just woken up from what seemed like long slumber. Which was very unusual for the man. Since he would all ways worry about what he and his son would eat today or could they even eat today? Or how will they handle the debt that his own father left behind. He was very lucky that Hope’s Peak Academy the school his son goes to gives scholarships to Ultimate students.
Takaaki sighed as he took his body off the bed. He then changed out of pajamas and wore his usual clothes a white shirt, black pants and jacket lastly his black tie as he was grabbing his tie from the closet. But instead of grabbing his usual tie he accidentally grabbed the wrong tie. The tie that Takaaki was holding was a dark blue tie with a starry pattern on it. Takaaki looked at the tie. He remembered how he got that tie it’s was a gift from someone he loved someone he tries to forget. Takaaki wanted to put the starry pattern tie away but after some minutes of searching and not finding his usual tie he reluctantly wore the starry pattern tie and went to the kitchen to cook breakfast. As he went to the kitchen he saw his son Taka in the kitchen sitting on a chair with his bunny plushy that Taka calls Etsuko. “Good morning son… and Etsuko” said Takaaki looking at his son and Etsuko I guess he wasn’t the only one who was using her gifts. “Good morning father” said Taka holding little Etsuko in his arms looking down at the floor.
Takaaki was worried about his son, today was Friday a school day and whenever there was a school Taka would be in full energy and sometimes he tries to skip breakfast to go early to the school. But this time he looked tired and spaced out “Taka is everything ok?” “It’s just I saw a dream about Etsuko last night” said Kiyotaka without talking his eyes off the plushy. “Was it a nightmare?” Asked Takaaki “It’s wasn’t a nightmare in fact it was quite opposite actually, it was a comforting dream” said the Moral Compass now looking at his father.
“Then what’s wrong? Asked Takaaki confused. “My dream was about how I met Etsuko. There was a woman in my dream her face was blurry but she looked nostalgic to me”
“Taka…” Takaaki tried to find some words but nothing came to his mouth after all what can he say about this. “Father is that a new tie?” Asked Kiyotaka looking at his father starry patterned tie.
“Its nothing special just some Tie” said Takaaki looking at the fridge for some food but the only thing was left was a cup of noodles. Takaaki sighs and says to Taka “Taka would you like to eat while you go to school?” “I have no problem with it father I already prepared the necessary things for school!” Said the Moral Copmass excitedly ”Alright here you go then this is what I can give for now” said Takaaki giving Kiyotaka the cup of noodles. “Thanks father!” Said Kiyotaka smiling then grabbing his bag but before he left for school he put Etsuko The Bunny in side his bag he knew toys weren’t allowed during school hours but he couldn’t help but break this rule for some reason he would always hide his dear bunny friend either in his locker or in his bag he knew it wasn’t right to break the rules but he couldn’t help but make an exception for Etsuko. Whenever he was in so much stress or sadness or anything like that Etsuko would be Taka’s only comfort item. “I’m leaving father see you soon” said Taka as he left for school.
……………
Taka had just arrived at school on time as always. He was going to his class but he couldn’t help but think about the dream he had last night What did it mean? Who was that woman these thoughts were interrupted when he heard yelling in the Corridor. Taka went were the yelling was coming from to warn the student who yelling in the corridor when he came closer he realized it’s was his boyfriend Mondo Owada who was doing the yelling he was on the phone with someone but that didn’t mean he was going make an exception for his boyfriend.
“I swear Takemichi! What if he doesn’t like it what if he hates it’s and hates me for it!” Mondo was saying or well yelling at his phone. Taka slowly tapped his boyfriend shoulder. I when Mondo looked at his shoulder and saw his boyfriend behind looking at him with his red eyes a bit angry at Mondo. “Boss?” Said Takemichi behind other hand. “I’ll call you later Michi” Then Mondo hang up the phone. Soon after Taka scolded Mondo for yelling at the hall. After Taka scolded Mondo,
“Sorry Taka for yelling in the halls” said Mondo apologetically
“Just don’t do it again” warned Taka to his boyfriend “Besides what we’re you yelling at the phone for?” Asked Taka out of curiosity
“Well…” Mondo paused then blushed
“Is everything alright darling?”Asked Taka innocently, Which made Mondo blush even more. “Well I was planning to ask you on a date today” said Mondo while blushing so hard “I was asking one of my buddies in the gang for advice and he said he won two free tickets to a show for tonight and I was just so nervous that I kinda yelled” said Mondo looking at the floor his face was redder then a apple.
Kiyotaka smiled at his boyfriend and kissed him on cheek “Thanks darling I’ll be looking forward for the show!” He said happily,
Mondo was so happy and thought “What did I do to deserve such an amazing person like you.”
But what the both of them didn’t know that after tonight’s date everything will not be same again.

Whew, part 2 done and called in! Rollcall please!
FULBRIGHT! God he's so stupid, he loops right back around to being lovable. "Whose justice is more just?!" You're reading from the same lad who enjoys the Great Saiyaman and other dumb parody things of that nature, so he's a major yes from me! And being paired with a convict (not in that way! yet!)? Peak comedy potential there.
Get the feeling they're leaning a little on Nick and Maya's dynamic for Apollo and Athena, but I enjoy them both well enough here. They get along like bread-and-butter!
Athena's characterisation carries on nice and strong! She's quite insecure about her job it looks... someone's got Impostor Syndrome methinks.
Ah, so the Psyche Duo's plot begins here... for some reason, I was afraid it wouldn't even be mentioned until 5-4. Ya'll didn't leave me with a lot of faith in the game's writing lol
Ah yes, the Amazing Nine-Tails, ie the signature Ace Attorney not-really-a-mystery-but-we'll-nerf-the-characters-IQ-to-make-it-look-that-way. Gourdy was more convincing than this and he was just an inflatable Steel Samurai.
Yeah, I don't think I mind Filch too much anymore. Very much a C-list witness, but I don't hate him. Good on ya, ya stereotype.
Jinxie's just chock-full of anxiety, isn't she? I hope she gets a god damn hug by the end of this.
I said it once and will say it again; L'belle is just a poncier Redd White. Nough said.
Think I'll leave the rest till the weekend nights. There's... Jesus, 7 more parts to 5-2 alone?
Gonna be a while till I get to the juicy stuff, lads...
Right, in the meantime, think I ought to release those tournament polls already!

Admin/Mun Speaking…
☄️: What you think of your muse
I cherish and adore Solar with all my heart and I’m quite happy with her design, but I’m also always tweaking and polishing her character and story to what I think suits best
I think she’s adorably dumb- but one thing is for sure: I made her to be morally grey, which is interesting because I haven’t shown much of her morally wrong side yet but hopefully, that time will come EHE
example of morally wrong solar with no context:
Tumblr media
✫: Why you began RPing.
I have played Roblox, Moviestarplanet and games with chat features ever since I was young and I guess that’s how roleplay became a hobby of mine LMAO
Writing and interacting with other people is a lot of fun and it’s nice to see myself improve on Tumblr and on Discord- \(^o^)/
My roleplaying peaked when I was in the Ace Attorney fandom, good old days 😩
☑️: An OTP with your muse in it
THIS ASK RIGHT HERE. I literally am so indecisive because I love all the potential ships that Solar can enter, whether it be canon or with OCs. I cannot choose only one.
For some reason, I love Solar x Kou EVEN when it's canon in Solar's personal story that nothing goes further than a mere crush on him and Kou only views her as a friend. because im a sucker for unrequited love.
AND I CAN'T FORGET SOLAR X YUI. LITERALLY. THEM. Solar my lovely bicon (oh my wlw heart 🤧)
However... when it comes to original characters...
Solar x Maeko Igarashi @renamami
Solar x Vilhelm Herron @ethereal-logy
Solar x Havria Del'vrie (also @ethereal-logy literally all of his OCs are hot)
...Don't tell Solar I said this but *COUGH COUGH* this guy right here: @mukami-kuron-mrsadisticcat
Solar x Korisu Hanabusa @korisuu (I know we only mentioned this once probably as a joke BUT NOW I'M INVESTED)
Of course, those probably won't be the only ones and I'm excited for a lot more to come in the newer future (๑•̀ㅁ•́๑)✧

Pairings: Miles Edgeworth/Phoenix Wright, Phoenix Wright/Dahlia Hawthorne Rating and warning(s): T (Teen and up); contains spoilers for Ace Attorney Trilogy, specifically games 1 and 3 Words: 2656
“Detective,” he asked Gumshoe as he was about to leave the room. “What is this?” “It’s a letter, boss,” he said unhelpfully. “Looks like personal mail. Kinda weird that someone wrote to you here, huh?” After five years, Miles receives a letter from Phoenix again.

💬💬💬👀👀👀👀
hello hello. here’s a few things I hope you’ll like ❤️ Interesting that almost none of what I picked is dialogue...
First up, a lil bit from Accompagnato, an unpublished Ace Attorney orchestra au.
The sound of his violin fills the cavernous space of the concert hall so completely, Miles feels that all the air in the room—and everything between his ears, and nestled deep within his ribs, too—has been replaced with the music.
They approach the più mosso agitato in perfect time with each other, and Miles descends the scale to his lowest string once more. This time, he’s ready to feel it vibrate through the cavity of his chest.
With his eyes screwed shut, Miles pours as much vibrato into the anguished notes as his bleeding heart desires; he leans the weight of losing his father into scraping the bow across the strings, making the violin moan out its sorrowful lines.
Uninterrupted this time, the piano drops away for its only extended rest in the piece, and Miles climbs out of the turmoil of the agitato alone. He hangs on the pause between the heartbreak of the previous passage and the fragility of the next.
When the violin slides into the following section, fragile and tentative, the voice of the piano returns to console it. It stays with the shifting, uncertain tones of the violin, supporting it, building in conviction with Miles as the bitter melody sweetens. The piano in Meditation is written as accompaniment for a solo violinist, but when Wright very purposefully oversteps his bounds on one of the piano’s reaching phrases, Miles becomes acutely aware that he’s asking to play the piece more like a conversation between the two instruments.
An intimate, difficult conversation (if Miles lets them have it)—one that he does not want to have aloud—one that he doesn’t think he knows the words to have aloud.
Departures and Arrivals. Unpublished 7yg fic. (Tom, I wanna finish this one so bad. Kick my ass so I work on it more. Ground me.)
Miles has been the opposite of a fair-weather friend to Wright. He comes running to his aid when tragedy strikes, but now, as he finds himself rushing off under dire circumstances once again, he worries that this pattern may make him a less than satisfactory friend. It’s only occurred to him recently that maintaining Wright’s friendship may require more than just courtroom cooperation—and only then because he’d said as much the last time Miles left.
With the third State v Fey trial in as many years concluded, Wright had seen Miles off at LAX. It had been an unusual experience, having someone voluntarily accompany him to the airport for no other reason than to say goodbye. Miles hadn’t seen the point; a farewell at the courthouse would have been just as serviceable (and cost him less in taxi fare), but Wright couldn’t be dissuaded, even with the flush of fever still visible on his skin. He had been unnervingly candid with him when it was time to part ways.
Giving him a glassy-eyed look, far too fond and bittersweet and forthright for the way he was used to talking to Wright, he’d taken Miles completely off guard by asking, You know I miss you when you leave, right?
Stranger than Fiction, an unnecessarily long unpublished AA park ranger au that I really hope I finish because oh my god, it’s such a stupid premise but I love it so much. I love to write about nature!!!!!
It had been pleasant in the morning, and then not so bad under the trees, but by noon they’d made it out onto the homestretch of the Foothill Loop, an exposed section of trail out in the rocky, sunbaked hills below the south face of Shroud Peak, where the only shade trees were a few spindly evergreens that looked like they wanted to keel over and die even worse than Phoenix did. Scrubby, brittle grass poked up through the rocky shale, reaching towards the cloudless sky as if in one last, feeble plea for water before it shriveled up for good.
The occasional wind might have given them some relief, but that was hot too.
“Hey,” Phoenix said—the first thing either of them had said in quite a while. Ever since they’d left the tree line for the open field at the foot of the mountain, they’d been too focused on being baked by the sun to say much of anything. Miles slowed to glance back over his shoulder, looking tired and miserable under the brim of his campaign hat. “Pull over at that tree up there.” Phoenix pointed ahead to a scraggly white fir, canted at a drunken angle just off the trail.
Miles scrutinized the tree for a long moment. “If you’re thinking that toothpick is going to give us any shade, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed.”
“Just trust me.”

Pie. Give us the Trolls manifesto. Poppy has never felt that into Branch it just feels like a comphet scenario to me. He always just rolls up at the end of a movie like "I like you" and she goes "oh okay me too" when her arc in the movie had nothing to do with her feelings for him at all. (Also girl Barb is RIGHT THERE)
Okay, fuck my deadline, we're doing this. First of all I'm gonna be self-indulgent and paste in the review I wrote of it after my first watch:
"the straight couple confessing their love to gay anthem true colours by gay icon cyndi lauper while the world literally goes from grayscale to color in a movie about finding happiness & which poster is rainbow themed is maybe the biggest waste of potential i've ever seen but Straights gonna Straight i guess"
Second... I actually really like Poppy and Branch's dynamic, but I think most of that is because I usually watch kids' movies and insert my current fav ship in it, and they are just PEAK Klavier/Apollo from Ace Attorney.
BUT! I totally agree that in the movie itself? Doesn't make much sense. Kind of like the Lego Movie where iirc the straights are just forced together for the sake of the main character's arc. Poppy really isn't particularly inclined to him, she's just like that with everyone, and her arc DEFINITELY doesn't involve him, he's more of a helpful sidekick than a romantic interest.
I honestly don't remember enough from the second movie as I've only seen it once and unfortunately, ADHD, but I remember looking respectfully at Barb and Poppy's... energy hahahaha
Since we're already talking Trolls here... can I spread my Norwegian propaganda again lol?
You know Bergentown? There's a city here that's called Bergen and it's the city in Norway that gets the most rain, and people there are sometimes stereotyped as grumpy because of the weather (and equally as annoying, overly jovial, so it's a mixed bag) and it's definitely an intentional dunk on them hahah, especially with the song Clint Eastwood playing when they first get to Bergentown. Also the second I knew I would love this movie, was the fucking dubstep remix of In the Hall of the Mountain King from Peer Gynt, which is composed for when Peer Gynt (in a dream) visits the troll king. Mixed with a THE SHINING REFERENCE????? God, this movie is just IMMACULATE

Hot take: Now that I’m rewatching Danganronpa 1...I really feel that Kyoko Kirigiri should’ve been the protagonist
First off, I don’t hate Makoto Naegi. He’s a good guy and, aside from his occasional perverted comments, a likable person. However, I feel that he was the wrong choice for the protagonist. He’s just too passive; he never understands what’s happening around him and most of the major story progression comes from the other characters. Makoto’s role is mainly to just react to the people around him.
I mean, this is a mystery game, right? So wouldn’t it make more sense to play as the character who is actively trying to uncover the truth behind Hope’s Peak aka Kyoko? Wouldn’t it be more satisfying to play as her, making your own discoveries and deductions instead of relying on someone else to do it for you?
Now, the counter-argument to that would be if we were to play as Kyoko, there’d be no mystery, we would just know everything. But I don’t think that’s right either. Kyoko is smart but she’s not omnipotent. She still has to do the investigations and she also has no idea what’s happening in the school. Also, just the fact that she has amnesia is good enough to show that the game’s overall mystery wouldn’t be ruined with her as the lead.
Also, just from a writer’s perspective, there’s more reason to be invested in Kyoko’s story than Makoto. She’s trying to find out what happened to her dad and what memories she lost.
Meanwhile, Makoto’s character progression came to a grinding halt when Sayaka died. At least with Sayaka, we got to learn more about him and he grew as a character from their interactions. When she died, Makoto becomes a passenger in the story, especially when Kyoko takes on a more active role in the story. It really doesn’t feel like Makoto actually contributes to the story until the last two chapters.
Also, this is why I feel the trial sequences are really awkward compared to DR2′s trials. Makoto has to be led on by the others and, for no good reason, Kyoko has to have Makoto speak for her. Like...why? Why can’t she just say it herself? While you can argue that it’s a game mechanic in order to help the player, it comes off as stilted and ruins the immersion. Plus, it takes away from the experience since it doesn’t feel like you deduced the clue yourself. You’re just picking up on what someone else found out before you.
Here, take this for an example. Imagine if in Ace Attorney, instead of playing as Phoenix Wright, you played as Maya Fey. Instead of Phoenix just coming out and saying what he found out, he has to turn to Maya and get her to say it for him. But obviously, Maya has no idea what to say, so Phoenix has to drop vague clues in the hopes of her figuring it out. That’d be counterproductive and yet, that’s what Danganronpa did.
And yes, I acknowledge that Mia Fey did the same to Phoenix. But let’s be real here, Mia wasn’t the main partner. Plus, there are a lot more moments where Phoenix has to prove himself as a competent investigator in comparison to Makoto.
This is why I feel Hajime Hinata was a result of the writers course correcting from Makoto. I think they realized just how weak of a protagonist Makoto was that for the second game, they made Hajime the most observant, overly cautious person who is also the one actively pushing the story forward. And, unlike Makoto, Hajime was the best possible choice for the protagonist role among his cast.
True, you have Chiaki and Nagito who seem to know more about the island than him, but at least you know for sure that those two shouldn’t have been the protagonist. If Chiaki was the protagonist, the whole twist would be ruined while Nagito was better off as an antagonist. Plus, there’s a better reason for Nagito to hide information from the group since he is portrayed as a villain for most of the game.

My Top 30 Favorite Video Games
Inspired by @ultraericthered’s Top 30 Favorite Anime post.
Although I’m doing mine in countdown form, ‘cause it’s more fun that way!
30. Super Mario Bros. - Arguably the first “blockbuster” game to be released, not only does Super Mario Bros. still hold up over 35 years later but it’s a gift that keeps on giving with how many different incarnations, remixes, fan games using its assets, etc. that we have now.
29. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - OBJECTION! While I cherish the entire original Phoenix Wright trilogy of the Ace Attorney franchise, I’ll always be the most partial to the original outing. The sheer audacity and hilarity of the concept, which is grounded by endearing characters and compelling mysteries, shines brilliantly in this little, easily accessible game.
28. Trigger Happy Havoc: Danganronpa - While similar in many ways to Ace Attorney, Danganronpa boasts a variety of more actual gameplay than mere point-and-click text scrolling. But what really makes this stand out, beyond gameplay or even the strength of its concept, story and characters, is the atmosphere it creates. For good and for ill, traversing the pristine, neon-lit hallways of the abandoned Hopes Peak Academy looking for clues as I’m forced to play by Monokuma’s twisted rules is an experience that will stay with me forever.
27. Star Fox 64 - Beyond all the entertainment this game provides through memes, it’s really just a fun, reasonably simple but just moderately complicated enough game that’s accessible to any player even if they usually don’t go for aerial shooters. It’s also one of the earliest console games that I ever played, so of course it’s going to hold a special place in my heart.
26. Batman: Arkham City - It’s an impressive feat when an open world game can still feel so claustrophobic in all the right ways, and that’s what Arkham City accomplishes. This game is essentially The Dark Knight to Arkham Asylum’s Batman Begins, escalating the action, suspense and sheer Batman-ness, providing unlimited opportunities to enjoy yourself playing as Gotham’s defender and facing down the greatest Rogues Gallery in comic book history.
25. Red Dead Redemption - Look, I know that Red Dead Redemption 2 is technically the superior game. But its complicated story, sprawling cast of characters, and vast canvas of a world can be pretty daunting, whereas I feel like the original Red Dead Redemption struck a much better balance. Allowing open world freedom within the confines of the straight-forward story of John Marston’s redemption really makes you feel like you’re in an old Western film, and the way that choices you make as a player impact the way that film ultimately turns out is one of the strongest arguments for video games being worthy of consideration as true art.
24. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - So, ten years ago an open world adventure video game series releases its fifth entry...and to this day, we’ve had no sixth, in favor of expansions and updated re-releases of said fifth entry. But that’s not a sign of laziness; it’s a sign the developers know they hit such a peak in quality that they have no need to rush anything further out the gate, as Skyrim is a gift that keeps on giving. Addictive in how unlimited in possibilities it is, with each playthrough never being the same as the one before, Skyrim is a gaming masterpiece that I don’t think I’m going to get bored with playing anytime soon.
23. Super Paper Mario - This may be an unpopular opinion, but I vastly prefer this game’s action-platform-RPG hybrid gameplay style to the prior installments’ traditional turn-based RPG style, which feels more at home in stuff like Super Mario RPG and the Mario & Luigi series. But gameplay aside, I think this has the strongest story of any Mario game, trading in the usual “save the kingdom/princess” fare for saving all of reality, with legitimate emotion and drama and even character development. It’s one of the Wii’s shining gems, to be sure.
22. Epic Mickey - This game’s graphics are by and large unremarkable, its gameplay is fraught with issues (that camera is unforgivable), and it’s nowhere close to the best on its system or genre. But Epic Mickey is a case study in where the effort put into crafting the game’s world and story, not to mention the obvious love and respect for the material being worked with, pays off. Any Disney fan will love this game for its story, which puts Mickey front and center as an actual character rather than a mascot and dives deep into his history as he meets his “half-brother” Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, and its mystical, unique atmosphere - what the graphics can’t deliver, the fucking music more than makes up for. All of the game’s flaws mean nothing compared to the sheer heart on display, and I treasure it greatly as a result.
21. Batman: Arkham Asylum - I already mentioned that Arkham City is the superior game, but as was the case with Red Dead Redemption and its sequel, personal preference strikes again. The simpler story and narrower confines of Arkham Asylum just appeal to me slightly more, and I feel like the borderline horror atmosphere this game has could never fully be replicated by all of its sequels and spin-offs. Also, you can play as the Joker in this. WIN.
20. Metal Gear Solid - And on the subject of Arkham Asylum, it owes much to this game, which created the template of a lone badass hero having to use stealth and weaponry to liberate a government-owned island from the lunatic terrorists that have taken over. Hideo Kojima famously never wanted this game to have any sequels, and I can definitely see his point, as it’s a complete and wholly satisfying experience in of itself and I don’t feel like it’s ever been topped. At the very least, it’s certainly the most enjoyable of the series to me.
19. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Also, speaking of “borderline horror atmosphere”, we have the freakiest game that the Legend of Zelda series ever put out. What was supposed to just be a gaiden to Ocarina of Time mutated into this beautiful monstrosity that’s become just as iconic. Nobody who plays this game is ever going to forget that fucking moon and all the constant jumping back and forth in time across three days as you try to prevent the apocalypse of Termina. It’s the kind of gaming trauma that’s well worth experiencing.
18. Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories - Like Majora’s Mask, this game is a case study where you can take a bunch of recycled assets and gameplay, and then make something unique from it if you have a well-crafted story with a dark and disturbing atmosphere. It’s hard to experience or appreciate the transition between Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II without playing this midquel, which takes the narrative and characters to deeper levels without being pretentious about it and sets the stage for the proper console sequel perfectly. And if you can’t get into it being on Gameboy Advance, then just play the PS2 remake (which is arguably the superior version anyway) and you’re good! Just...don’t mind the cards, OK?
17. Sonic CD - And now we have another game about jumping back and forth through time to prevent an apocalypse! See the common threads at play here by this point? Sonic the Hedgehog is at his best in 2D gameplay, and I personally enjoy this the best out of all the 2D games in the series. As obscure as the Sega CD was as a system, it was powerful enough to take the blue blur’s speed to its maximum level, set alongside beautiful graphics and a kick-ass soundtrack (well, two different kick-ass soundtracks; and I actually prefer the US one).
16. Pokemon Black & White - While there were advancements made to story and graphics and gameplay features in the third and fourth generations of the Pokemon series, nothing felt as truly ground-breaking as the second generation games until the fifth gen with its Black & White games. This was arguably the game series’ peak in quality on all fronts, but its specifically the story that lands it on this list, as its well-written and paced, subverts many formulaic elements from the previous games, is set in one of the most unique regions in the Pokemon world, and has a timeless message that has only grown more relevant with age.
15. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - The whole series could really go here, but fortunately the most recent entry is the perfect embodiment of said series, with every playable character there’s ever been and then some. The sheer variety is unmatched by any other fighting game out there, and its story mode, “World of Light”, is quite possibly the greatest video game crossover in history given how many characters are featured as both fighters and spirits.
14. Super Mario 64 - I’m pretty sure this game used to be higher in my favor, but replaying it on the Nintendo Switch recently has made me aware of how, as the first game on the Nintendo 64 and the first 3D platformer, it’s poorly aged in several areas. However, I must stress that it is still a very good game. The fun of going to the various worlds within paintings in Peach’s Castle hasn’t changed, nor has how smoothly and seamlessly Mario managed to make the jump from 2D to 3D. Just like Super Mario Bros., the number of games that owe something to this one is too great to count, and that’s an achievement that remains timeless.
13. Dark Chronicle - Also known as Dark Cloud 2. I hadn’t heard a damn thing about this game before renting it on a whim many years ago, and I was caught off guard by just how good it was. It’s got a simple but effective story and likable characters, a timeless atmosphere, beautifully cel-shaded graphics, dungeon-crawling gameplay, action-RPG combat gameplay, literal world-building gameplay, and even a fishing minigame! This game can actually stand besides the Zelda series without shame; it’s truly an underrated gem.
12. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Oh, speaking of Zelda, this game goes full Lord of the Rings-style epic fantasy with it and it is glorious. Between the near perfect gameplay, beautiful 3D graphics, and one of the best stories in the series (with one of the best characters: Midna), Twilight Princess’ most prevalent complaint from critics all the way up to its own developers is that it wasn’t even MORE expansive and awesome given how long it was hyped, and if that’s the biggest issue with the game then I’d say it’s in pretty good shape.
11. Super Mario Galaxy - Super Mario 64 may be held back a little by how its aged, but no such thing is holding back Super Mario Galaxy. Super Mario Odyssey might be as good or possibly even better, but I just don’t hold the same feelings of amazement and respect toward it that I do for this game. From the blitzkrieg-style attack on the Mushroom Kingdom by Bowser to the discovery of Rosalina’s space station, this game had me hooked from the first few minutes, especially with it blaring that awesome orchestral score the whole way through. To this day, I maintain that this is Mario’s greatest 3D adventure. It’s simply magnificent.
10. Final Fantasy X - Ha! See what I did there? This game has caught flak for some of the awkwardness that comes from being the first fully 3D entry in the series, but I think that’s tantamount to nitpicking when compared to all it does right. To me, this was the last really good installment of the main Final Fantasy series, with a story and world so brilliantly developed that the game earned the immediate breakthrough success and acclaim that it found in its native Japan. 20 years later and, as the HD remaster has shown, it still holds up as one of the most engaging JRPG experiences I’ve ever had the pleasure of having.
9. Banjo-Kazooie - At the time, this was basically Rare’s copycat version of Super Mario 64, although considered about as good. Now, however, there’s a difference: the aging issues I mentioned for Super Mario 64 don’t apply for Banjo-Kazooie. Whether replaying it on the Nintendo 64 or on whichever Xbox you’ve got, this game is still just as fun, imaginative and hilarious now as it was back then. It’s quite possibly the greatest 3D platformer ever made.
8. Pokemon Crystal - The definitive edition of the Gold & Silver games of Pokemon’s second generation, taking what was already a phenomenal advancement and improvement to the first generation and making it even better with additional features such as the ability to play as a girl for the first time and a more clearly defined storyline centered around the legendary Pokemon featured on the game’s box art. Pokemon had been written off as just a passing fad up until this point. This was when its staying power as a video game juggernaut was proven.
7. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Talk about a win right out of the gate for the Nintendo Switch! This game returns the Legend of Zelda series to its roots while also applying all that has been made possible in video games since the original game’s release, and the result is an enthralling, addictive, open world masterpiece that has set a new standard of quality for both the Zelda series and for many modern video games in general.
6. Kingdom Hearts II - The Final Mix edition to be precise, although in this day and age that’s basically the only edition people are playing anyway. This game is the apotheosis of Kingdom Hearts as both a video game series and as a concept; filled to the brim with Disney magic and Square Enix RPG expertise and paired with some of the most refined action-based gameplay there is. And when it comes to bringing the original Kingdom Hearts trilogy’s story to a close, does this game ever stick the landing. The series could have ended right here and I would have been completely satisfied (and its reputation would be a lot better off, too!)
5. Pokemon Yellow - While I maintain that this game, the definitive edition of the original first generation Pokemon games, still holds up as fun to play even now, I’ll admit that it’s pure bias that it ranks so high. It was the first proper video game I ever played, there was no way I was leaving it off the top 5! Its blissful nostalgic atmosphere is always such a delight to return to.
4. Banjo-Tooie - Remember when I said Banjo-Kazooie was “quite possibly the greatest 3D platformer ever made”? The “quite possibly” is because its in stiff competition with its own sequel! And personally, I’m in Banjo-Tooie’s corner; something about how inter-connected its worlds are and the addition of so many things to do all while maintaining your full moveset from the original game is just beautiful to me. Both it and its predecessor are like obstacle courses that I never tire of running through, which is the hallmark of brilliant game design.
3. Kingdom Hearts - Another case where the sequel may be the superior game, but my own personal preference leans toward the original. And in this case, it’s a highly personal preference: this game and my memories of playing it for the first time are so very dear to me. The characters and worlds of Disney put into an epic crossover RPG was like a dream come true for me and no matter how far the series it spawned has deteriorated, nothing can detract from the magic of this game. It’s got a certain, indescribable feel and atmosphere that’s never truly been replicated, and that feel and atmosphere still holds up whenever I revisit it. The gameplay may not be the best, particularly when compared to Kingdom Hearts II’s, but the charm of the story and the characters and the world and the very concept more than makes up for that. As far as I’m concerned, it’s one of Disney and Square’s greatest masterpieces.
2. Final Fantasy VII - I was aware of the hype this game got and was totally ready to call it overrated, but damn it, it got me! I don’t know what it is about this game with its blocky early 3D graphics, poor sound quality to its excellent soundtrack, and frequently mistranslated script that proved to be so gripping and enjoyable to play through, but man did it ever Limit Break its way into my heart. This is considered a JRPG classic for a damn good reason.
1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Do I really need to explain this one? It’s famous for being frequently cited as one of the greatest video games ever made, and like Final Fantasy VII, its hype is well-deserved and totally justified. Whether you’re playing it on the Nintendo 64, the Gamecube, the Wii, the 3DS, and hopefully the Nintendo Switch in the future, there is a magic quality to this game that permeates through every step you take in its fully 3D world. It’s a triumph that has stood the test of time, cementing the Zelda series as truly legendary.

Okay, so...  I’d like to do something a little different tonight and talk about a game that I actually have an overall negative opinion about.  I’m admittedly a pretty picky gamer, so there are a lot of games that fall into my “no thanks” category, but sometimes you just have to share your feelings on one of them.  That’s just the life of a professional game critic (or a professional game critic wannabe, in my case), so here goes...
The game in question was apparently inspired by Ace Attorney, a favorite series of mine (in case that wasn’t obvious by now), and has found a good amount of popularity among visual novel fans.  I hadn’t planned on exploring it myself until a couple of my friends recommended it, so I decided to watch a playthrough of it on YouTube.  What I found was...quite the bizarre experience, I have to say.
Simply put, it’s a game that centers around the battle between hope and despair, and the struggle shared by 15 youths to hold onto the former while being surrounded by the latter.  I am, of course, referring to Overkill: The Game, also known as...
Tumblr media
(Danganronpa Spoilers Ahead)
So, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I ventured into the crosshairs of this game (pun fully intended), but after watching the story of the first Danganronpa game, I’d say the best way to describe it is Ace Attorney on steroids...and drugs.  I’m sure I may have missed out on some parts of the game by not playing it myself, of course, I believe I got the gist of it.
It begins with 15 “ultimate” students starting out at Hope’s Peak Academy, a school that “sends the cream of the crop into the work force every year.”  Unfortunately for them, they soon discover that a different sort of force has been at work behind the scenes, and that a crazed mastermind, hidden behind a robotic bear named Monokuma, has apparently trapped them inside the school, and will only let them leave (or “graduate”) if one of them is able to murder a fellow student and fool everyone into believing they’re innocent.  This makes for one intriguing setup...but then some of them begin actually playing the game.  Needless to say, things get uglier and uglier from there.
The player fills the shoes of Makoto Naegi, the only student there who doesn’t have an “ultimate” talent, but was picked at random and is therefore considered the “Ultimate Lucky Student.”  As the game progresses and students meet unfortunate ends at the hands of their classmates, he ends up playing the role of a makeshift detective, attempting to dismantle a series of clever murder-and-coverup schemes.  So far, this game may sound like a fun (if a little creepy) experience from its description, but watching it was...a bit of a different one for me.
My “ultimate” verdict?
Tumblr media
I didn’t hate it enough not to watch it all the way through, and I ended up finding some things I liked about it (and a few that I loved), so please bear stick with me as I describe my experience with it.  With the help of sprites from the game, naturally.
In terms of the pool of violence, language, sexual content, and sadism I was marinated in:
Tumblr media
In terms of an overload of suspense for suspense’s sake:
Tumblr media
In terms of one shock to the system after another:
Tumblr media
In terms of believability:
Tumblr media
And in terms of a more confusing than satisfying conclusion to it all:
Tumblr media
Whew...  All right, on to the good parts.
In terms of fun and creative mechanics:
Tumblr media
In terms of upbeat and engaging music:
Tumblr media
In terms of getting me to glare at fictional characters for making a bad (also fictional) situation worse:
Tumblr media
In terms of Aoi Asahina:
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, she brought the game’s likeability up by at least 25% for me.
And finally, in terms of making it a challenge to hold onto hope until the bitter end:
Tumblr media
Also, it’s kinda hard for me to completely hate a game with a line like this in it:
Tumblr media
She’s probably right, y’know.
So, overall, I found a lot to enjoy about this game, but sadly, I felt that the generous amount of NSFW content and outright sadism diminished its potential audience and made the good stuff harder to enjoy.
The investigation and class trial’s mechanics were interesting, BUT hard to feel good about when you’re just playing a psychopath’s game.
The characters were fun and relatable, BUT you have to see most of them either die or become “blackened”...and also die.
Monokuma was cute at times, BUT there wasn’t much else to like about him.  I know he was basically designed to be hated, but the writers pushed it WAY too far in my mind.
My “ultimate” point here being, creative freedom is a wonderful thing, but creative limits are important, too.  This game serves as a perfect example of how creative freedom is overrated in video games (and other media), whereas limits are underrated.  I hope I’m not alone in that assessment.
Anyway, just so we can leave this on a positive...ish note, here’s a Danganronpa meme:

🔍 The Adventure of the Detection Club
Chapter 12: Opening Arguments
Table of Contents & Trigger Warnings
⚠ Chapter Specific Warnings: Contains allusions to spoilers for The Great Ace Attorney 2, as well as passing references made to blood and gore.
The next morning Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey Defendant Lobby
Ryunosuke Naruhodo quickly sorted his way through a stack of papers that made up the official court record for the case, shuffling his way through at such a speed that he looked as though he was certainly doing his best not to drop any.
Redford took a long drink from the flash of cocoa that Iris had specially prepared for him, whilst Susato kept a watch over Ryunosuke.
The door swung open with a loud crash as Sholmes barged his way into the room. “Morning, folks!” he roared.
Ryunosuke gave a yelp as he promptly dropped the pages of the court record across the floor. “Sh-Sholmes! Look at what you made me do!”
“Oh I’m terribly sorry about that Mr. Naruhodo—”
“Just help me pick these up!”
Ryunosuke fell to his knees, along with Sholmes, frantically picking them up and trying to re-organise them, all whilst Ryunosuke swore several oaths under his breath in Japanese.
“Apologies if I sound rude or anything, Susato, but is Ryunosuke always so…‘jumpy’ before a trial like this…?” Redford asked quietly.
“No…well…at least not that I’ve ever seen before…” said Susato, carefully playing with a loop of her hair.
“Me neither,” said Iris. “Normally when he’s a little anxious, his eyes dart around the room like no tomorrow. But this is definitely a new one…”
“Well it explains the way he was acting during breakfast this morning. With the way his eyes were rolling about in his skull, I thought they were going to roll out of his head or something. If I were trying to maintain eye contact with him, I think I’d’ve ended up giving up.”
The bailiff suddenly appeared from the entrance and called: “Now hearing the case of Regina V. Ninate, will all parties please report to courtroom no. 3 immediately!”
Just in time, Ryunosuke managed to get the papers together and get the court record back into its cardboard folder again.
“That’s our cue, Mr. Naruhodo,” said Susato.
“Well, I’ll be cheering you on from the dock. Good luck, you two!” said Redford with a bow.
Sholmes flicked the front rim of his hat. “And likewise, we’ll be cheering you on from the gallery!”
Iris flicked the front of her own forehead. “Good luck, everybody!”
——————————
The judge hit his gavel several times to bring the chattering of the gallery to a close, before clearing his throat and pushing his pince-nez glasses up his nose.
“Court is now in session for the trial of Redford Ninate!” he announced.
“The defence is ready, milord!” exclaimed Ryunosuke with a start.
“The prosecution is more than prepared, milord,” said Abidon, looking over the top of his half-moon glasses.
“And you,” continued the judge, “our six members of the jury, randomly chosen from citizens across the city of London, are you ready?”
The first juror, a young woman with her short and curly brown hair tied up with a red and white spotted handkerchief, rolled up a sleeve and flexed her bicep. “Ready and riveting to go!”
The second juror, a rather frail-looking old man dressed in a black suit and tall top-hat, stroked his sharp triangular chin with a bony hand. “I’m ready to commit the facts of this case to loving memory…kept in the grace of God’s right hand.”
The third juror, a familiar-looking Japanese man in a brown kimono with messy black hair and moustache, with several cats climbing over him, struck various poses. “I! AM! READY! BANZAI!”
The fourth juror, a tall man with black finely-combed hair in a widow’s peak and an aquiline nose, removed a pipe from the pocket of his dressing gown and began to smoke it. “I am ready to perceive the truth behind this case.”
The fifth juror, a man in a black tuxedo, top-hat with a purple band and a matching-coloured waistcoat stroked his moustache after he fiddled with his monocle. “I, the great Horace Velmont, will give everything that I can to this case!”
Finally, the sixth juror, a young girl with a black and white striped sweater, a mask covering the top part of her face and a black knitted cap on her head, said: “Yeah! I’m ready to go, guv’na!”
The judge nodded his head. “Excellent. Prosecutor Abidon, isn’t it?”
“Yes, milord?”
“You may begin with your opening statement.”
Ryunosuke looked around the courtroom nervously.
(It’s been a while since I’ve last been here. I just hope I’m able to get Redford off of these charges…for his sake…)
He looked over to Redford, sat in the defendant’s chair in the dock. And as he did so, Redford winked.
(Oh my heart…!)
“Mr. Naruhodo? Are you sure that you’re OK?” whispered Susato. “You’re looking at Red in the face.”
“Eh—sorry?”
“I said: ‘Are you OK? You’re looking a little red in the face’.”
“Is everything alright, defence?” asked the judge.
“Defence, you are aware that talking over the prosecution whilst it is attempting to make its opening argument is rude, arrogant and something that could lead to you being removed from this courtroom for contempt of court?” said Abidon with a glare. “I’m not sure how you Japanese like to do things, but it is the way we British people do things in this sacred court of law, and it is to be respected and heeded.”
“Sorry!” exclaimed Ryunosuke with a start. “Carry on. As you were…”
(Oh great! A smaller, jumped up, discounted-version of Lord van Zieks…that’s just what we really need right about now…)
“As I was about to say before I was so rudely interrupted…” said Abidon as he unfurled a scroll and held it in front of him. “The victim in this case was a Mr. Harris Thomas, a member of the same organisation as the defendant—known as ‘The Detection Club’, an organisation for crime writers to meet and work on their crime novels I believe.
“The victim had been expelled from the club for missed payment of membership fees, and a new member, Dexter Collins, was due to be inaugurated into the club the day before yesterday through a special ceremony. A ceremony that the defendant himself was placed in charge of organising and arranging.
“The defendant arranged ahead of time that he was to meet with the victim to formally inform him of his expulsion at the same time as began these ceremonial preparations. The prosecution, therefore, asserts that the defendant did, with malicious intent and malice of forethought, met with the victim beforehand and killed him unlawfully.
“He did so by hitting him repeatedly over the head with this—” Abidon reached under the prosecution’s bench and took out the alleged murder weapon, holding it high for the benefit of the court. “—this skull, which serves as a mascot for the club, affectionately referred to as ‘Norman’.”
“Oh my! An actual human skull? How frightening!” exclaimed the judge. “Still, how can you assert that it was the defendant who committed this horrifying crime?”
“Because, milord,” replied Abidon, “the defendant was the only one who had a key to this locked room mystery—the only door to the room is several inches thick and designed to be entirely impenetrable, as is the rest of the room. The windows are only able to open a few centimetres in width, and the entire room is located on the third floor of a building on High Window Avenue. And a cursory investigation has proven that there is no way for anybody to hide themselves within the room.”
“Very compelling evidence, I must admit.”
“HOLD IT!”
“If that is the case,” said the second juror, “I believe that we may finally be able to put this matter to rest. Dearly beloved, let us join hands together in prayer to mourn this defendant’s hopeless case. A truly, tragic death, indeed!”
With a knock of his hand against the jury bench, a fireball flew through the air and landed into the “guilty” side of the giant set of scales behind the judge, tilting them towards the right.
(Yikes! Already it’s not looking good!)
“An excellent opening argument indeed, Sir Prosecutor, but not necessarily one that would be enough to force a conviction in my opinion,” said the fourth juror, tenting his fingers together. “However, I would wish to hear more on this matter. It is only whenever we have eliminated every possible lead that we may know for certain what, exactly, has transpired.”
“I am inclined to agree with Juror #4,” said the judge with a nod.
Abidon nodded back in response.
“I acknowledge that particular fact, milord. As such, the prosecution would now like to call its first witnesses to the stand—Detective Athelney Jones of Her Majesty’s Metropolitan Police Service and Dr. Yujin Mikotoba, the police’s current acting chief coroner and medical examiner.”

@wh0doyouthinkyouareiam‘s fics wreck me! I recommend her series The Stark-Parker Boys and their Complicated Relationship with Alcohol or her new fic When Skies are Gray (Please make sure to read the tags for cw though!)
All of @floweryfran‘s fics are so beautifully written and full of love!
@official-impravidus wrote a fic loosely based on one of my favorite romcoms-- go to her for your Parkner needs!
theprophetlemonade on AO3 wrote one of my all-time favorite fics Droplets (okay look I know it’s SNK. 2014 was a different time and this fic is a masterpiece)
@jortsbian writes such cute IT fic go check out their stuff it’s *chef’s kiss*
idiopathicsmile on AO3 wrote my all-time favorite fic. Seriously, no fic will ever top this. (I could do an entirely different list of my favorite les mis fics tho so this is the only one I will name in this post)
@dear-friend-i-can-fly is my best friend and probably the most talented writer I know. I recently just commissioned an FMA fic from her because she is the ONLY ONE I trust with those characters. She’s got a mob psycho/ace attorney mystery fic that will BLOW YOUR MIND (also-- and I’m not totally sure about this-- but I think her commissions are open right now, so...)
@princessofspite of COURSE? Angst and hanahaki? Sign me UP
@baloobird‘s Our Favorite “Guy in the Chair” series makes me 🥺🥺🥺
@ironxprince need I say more???
Okay and now just a shoutout for my mutuals whose stuff I haven’t gotten a chance to dive into their stuff yet but I’m so EXCITED to @canonismybitch @joyful-soul-collector @hold-our-destiny @romeoandjulietyouwish (I got a sneak peak at one of your newer fics and I can’t wait to get a chance to read through your AO3) @ambivalentmarvel @emsxworldx
I know I had to have missed people on that list, I’m so sorry if I didn’t name you! I’m positive your work is great I just have a terrible memory. All fic is inherently wonderful because fic is made purely of love. There’s so many talented writers on here and I love seeing all your work on my dash.
Thank you so much for this question! I always love gushing over amazing fic writers!

Hi, I worked graveyard at a hotel for 2 years.
Tonight’s my last night. I want to share some stories with you, because this job has been fucking wild.
When I interviewed for the job, my future GM asked if I was a good person (I said yes), complained about the American healthcare system for 30 minutes, and then hired me on the spot. That was my entire interview. He said he trusted me fully because my friend recommended me for the job.
This is the same friend who tried to get me to buy her cigarettes with a school ID because she had left hers at home. Our school IDs were printed on cardstock and laminated by the secretary. I told her it would not work because it looked like a shitty fake ID.
It did not work.
This surprised her.
Also the same friend who had a tan minivan, drove us to Starbucks during an off period in high school, almost crashed because she was smoking, and hit two people’s cars in the parking lot.
Love her.
The first employee I met got into an argument in front of me with her boyfriend. They fought loudly. Afterwards, she asked if I wanted a lollipop.
She got fired like a month afterwards because she took the money from the drawer. This was not the first time she had been fired for this.
I worked with a guy who I’m going to call S. S was a bald white guy who looked like a attorney who couldn’t leave his job. Or a depressed bank manager who’s wife divorced him. He was a very nice man.
I told him this one day on shift change. He thought this was fucking hilarious.
S also used to be a drug dealer. He got busted for selling drugs at this hotel years ago, went to prison, all that shit. My manager hired him after he got out. He thought this story was very funny.
We had a permanent resident named Joe. He was the nicest fucking guy. I chatted with him in the mornings when I set up breakfast. I miss him so much.
He doesn’t live at the hotel any more. This is depressing.
A man threatened to beat me up for flirting with his wife, because he saw us laughing in the lobby. I tried to tell him that I was not interested in his wife, who was 30 years older than me and also not my type. He was still angry.
I texted my manager this. He told me that if the man tried anything, we have, and I quote, “a big ass wrench” next to the safe. He gave me permission to hit the guy with it.
The wrench is, in fact, really fucking big.
A sexline operator called me once, while I was working. This was uncomfortable for me, a very ace then-19 year old. We got into an argument because she claimed I had called her.
Actually just... lots of people liked treating me like phonesex operators. Apparently people’s kinks are listening to room rates. Please do not do this to the people working front desk.
While we’re here, I got invited to a threesome once. The people who invited me? They watched me clock in to do shift change. They asked literal minutes after I clocked in. There is only one person at front desk. They asked after the other guy left.
I declined. For obvious reasons.
The other guy was S, who laughed about it when I told him the next day.
That time that they fired someone and another person left and we were short staffed for a month, so there were two days a week I’d come in at midnight, leave at 6AM, and then come in at noon for another 6 hour shift.
I hated that. Never again.
There was a raid on a hotel across the street. I watched it happen with Joe. He told me shit was wild. I agreed.
My GM would just... text me. At random times of day. To ask how many we had in house.
It was never when I was working.
He was always disappointed that I couldn’t tell him because I wasn’t working.
The time I had to crawl partially under a bed in a smoking room to help a guy get his cat. She was a good cat.
A lady told me a man was outside with a chainsaw and she’d seen him murder someone. Understandably, I was concerned, because she was shaken up and my hearing is godawful. I called the cops, who took things very seriously until she said the chainsaw man had no head in her physical description.
apparently she was on a very bad drugs trip. I learned this the next time I had to call the non-emergency number, because one of the cops from that incident showed up and told me.
A guy died in a room. Normally, you’d think this would be relayed with more urgency. I found about it when I was doing shift change with S. He told me this, and then proceeded to complain about an unrelated room and called them assholes.
The guy’s car was here for 8 months. The company he worked for wanted us to ship the car out to them. We told them they’d have to cover the shipping charge. They refused, and then S got the title to the car.
A guy once threatened to call the cops on me because I told him he couldn’t check into his room 10 hours early without paying an early check in fee. He wanted to call the cops because Expedia said it was 24 hour check in, and it was false advertisement.
He made the mistake of doing this right before I had to head out for a camp. I laughed at him, told him I’d willingly call the cops for him, and that I would love to have them come down.
A scam call once got angry with me because I wouldn’t authorize a purchase.
They pretended to call my manager. I laughed when they did it, because I could hear the phonecall.
My manager had a very particular way of speaking. He was very slow when talking. They did not take this into account.
I told him about this the next shift, of course, and he did not believe me. It was during shift change, luckily, so I did a faux phone call with another coworker, who had worked there for years. Both of them thought it was funny that I had his timing and general tone down.
The scam artists told me I was fired because my manager was, quote, “extremely disappointed in me”. I told them I was glad, because it meant I could go home early.
(My manager told me I wasn’t fired when I told him he had apparently fired me. I asked if he was still disappointed. He laughed.)
When we changed the clock-in system and I had to text our hotel manager whenever I clocked in and out.
A guy tried to tell me that I wasn’t qualified to check him into a room because women are all stupid. I asked him if he wanted to talk to the manager. He said yes, and the manager called him an idiot.
The other time someone told me I wasn’t qualified to check them in because I took too long, and I offered to let her come in and check herself in. Our servers were updating. She declined, because she didn’t work here. I told her she was just going to have to be patient.
Kicked someone out of the hotel once. He came back 30 minutes later to try and re-rent his room. I told him no. He thought I was just joking about him being kicked out.
My GM tried for like 8 months to get me to date another coworker. He made jokes about giving him a raise so he could take me out to dinner.
I do not think my GM knew I was very gay.
The coworker did not take me out to dinner.
The one drunk college student from Germany who I made friends with in the breakfast room, and his significantly less drunk friend.
they both said trans rights, i’m still crying
Drunk men are assholes. Drunk women are godsends.
One night, a lady told me my eyes were pretty, and when I had to help her to the door, she called me gorgeous and said I smelled nice.
her friends were so embarrassed
i forgot how to speak
That same night, a drunk guy said he hated his wife and that he hated me too after calling me an asshole. His wife came in after he said this. I felt bad for her.
Occasionally people would stop at the front desk on their way back from the gas station, and would come bearing gifts of usually drinks. It was always nice.
one time a guy offered me weed brownies
i declined because i was worried about
The guy who stopped at the front desk to ask where the nearest Starbucks was, because his girlfriend wanted a frappuccino, and he was gonna get her one so she could have it in bed.
He came back as I was clocking out.
His girlfriend had dumped him on his way back.
I felt really bad, because this man had peak “dumb of ass but chugs respecting women juice” energy.
Incidentally, I got a free Starbucks frap.
Someone was convinced I was colorblind because I told him that I thought his blue cup was neat.
It was a purple cup.
i did not know how to tell him i was not colorblind, i am just an idiot
Our GM moved to Texas and we didn’t see him for like a year. He was the GM of 2 other hotels. Apparently, he said he was living at all three.
Some dude came into the hotel once night. I tried talking to him. He started signing. I do not know sign, and apologized, and then grabbed a paper to write back and forth with him.
The man made me learn fingerspelling and we instead did this back and forth.
I thought nothing of this, and he came by a few times to chat with me, albeit incredibly slowly.
During shift change, he came in again. I explained to my relief that he only signed. He nodded, and then told me that he had been “healed by a grace act of God, and could now hear and talk.”
He then tried to tell me to come to church to celebrate this miracle.
He told me he was actually fine. He was just choosing to learn ASL and wanted me to participate for the “immersion of it all”, so that I might “find the lord and accept him once more into my heart”.
yes, this was in fact, some white person bullshit
Also in line with white people bullshit, the guy who said he could tell I had a strained relationship with my half-sister but a good relationship with my youngest sister, that my father would recover from the divorce, and that my engagement would be fine. He said it was because I was a Leo cusp, and then said that Kimberly was a good name for me and that I chose well.
i am not a leo. i was born in december
i have no sisters
i have never been engaged
my parents are (somehow) still married
i was wearing a nametag. angeles does not sound or look anything like kimberly
They sold the hotel last year to new owners. Nobody knew until an email got sent out that said we “probably would still have our jobs”.
I argued with my new manager about a raise. He didn’t want to give it to me. I told him he had to, because I was working minimum wage, and the minimum wage had gone up.
the AAA guy who was a real big dick when I asked him to repeat himself and joked about women being bad at jobs.
He asked me if there were any discounts. I refused to give him any, because we had none for him.
He asked if I knew if there was any discount that would make him stop asking me stupid questions. I sighed and said “No, but god I fucking wish there was.”
Tonight, a lady asked me what our beta fish’s name is. I don’t know. She decided to name him Benny, and then asked me to come up with a name. I panicked and said Soap. This was apparently the right answer, because she nodded sagely and said I chose wisely.
