Ace's All Time Best Fic Rec List (AATBFRL) April 2024: Ace Attorney

It's been a 6 months since my last list so here we go again! (I specified Ace Attorney in case I start doing this for other fandoms.) I originally planned to have all the old recs here as well but the list was too long so here's a link to the previous list. These aren't necessarily in any particular order, but if you can think of a good way for me to organize them, please let me know for future lists!

Phoenix is presently knowing that he knows about Kristoph but doesn't want to acknowledge it bc Kristoph has been really good to him and Trucy. But that doesn't matter right now bc they're going to the theatre.

if you leave the light on- 7yg Wrightworth. Nothing can happen until it's over but something Keeps happening. Miles will wait as long as it takes and Trucy decides he's part of the family.

In The Dead Of Night- During the 7yg Edgeworth invites the Wrights to Europe. Trucy has a nightmare and 'Uncle Miles' comforts her.

Phoenix's List- After getting his badge back, Phoenix has some regrets and sets about fixing what he can.

Perfect- I actually found this on another fic rec list and I can see why it was their favorite. Set towards the end of the trial of Bridge to Turnabout. TW if you have memory issues, it might be a little hard to get through parts bc of all the mindfuckery. I have to be really vague here so as not to spoil it. (Wrightworth)

Eo Nomine- Klapollo fake marriage turned real marriage but ig that's what happen when you get fake married while being real in love.

the best you'll never have- Rated M for sex reasons. I love the tagline: "Someone else's wedding is something that can actually be so personal". It's a Blackmadhi complicated relationship, what relationship, they weren't actually dating but also...

Apollo and the Artist (1975 - Oil paint, wax crayon, pencil, collage)- Rated M for mentioned sex reasons. Apollo is not an art person. But to Klavier he is art... and also a person. They've known each other for 8 years and it's probably been coming for just as long. It was a long time coming.

darling i'd wait for you (even if you didn't ask me to)- Wrightworth fake date bc Edgeworth needs a plus one to a wedding for some guy, it's not really important. But the cake sucks.

A Knight in a Loud Red Suit- oh my god oh my god oh my god Klavier gets shot and Apollo stabs a guy. And also love confessions at the hospital. They could have me also if they wanted.

Written- Rated E for sex reasons. Edgeworth moonlights as a Steel Samurai fic writer, and due to it being an obvious coping mechanism for his life and feeling Maya finds out... and accidentally sends a fic to Phoenix who... finds out. Half of the smut is Edgeworth's own fanfic, so we get like... fanfic-ception. That doesn't really work with more than one syllable words, huh...

Lover Be Good to Me- Rated M for implied sex reasons. 5+1 klapollo wooing each other.

Love Love Love- Rated M for implied sex reasons. klapollo is messy in a good way and takes wayyyy too long to call themselves boyfriends. Set from middle of aa4 to past aa6.

delicate- Rated M for sex reasons. klapollo is messy in a bad way (long distance is hard) and they break up but it works out, I prommy. If you don't like angst you'll want to skip this one, though.

(i was) enchanted to meet you- klavquill! I love them, I need to read more fics with them. They meet at the Prosecutor gala for the first time and sparks fly. Actually, they were fireworks, but that's not important.

Process of Elimination- Rated M for sex reasons. One day I will read a fic where Blackmadhi is not complicated as hell. Can they ever talk about their feelings? Apparently I like this, though, bc I keep reading and recc'ing them. Um, Nahyuta is looking for a fuck buddy and by 'process of elimination' ends up deciding on Blackquill but whoops! Feelings.

feel your skin- Rated M for one boner. Klavier is infuriating AND wearing lipgloss and Apollo can't take it. Cue making out in the janitor's closet.

moribund- I keep thinking about this one so I need everyone else to read and think about it with me. Pre Gant busting, POV Lana has to help clean up his messes. This a comedy, mostly of errors.

chronophobia- StarrSkye (AngelxLana) Be forewarned, you are going to cry. Lana has done her time and is trying to find a way to reconnect with the most important people from her past.

Crash! Landing- Junithena, fantastic traumatized autistic representation, if I do say so myself as a traumatized autistic person. It is very sweet and Juniper is a real one. I need me one of those.

In Pursuit of Justice- This one is not yet complete, but I preemptively j'adore'd it. It's a klapollo. Sebastian is great. He says Apollo looks like a frog (accurate).

Witcheln Woes- Secret Santa klapollo and they are cute and Clay is alive and it is sooooo fluffy.

Samurai Swear- Maya making besties with Edgeworth! Maya and Phoenix being besties also! Dash of mutual pining wrigthworth.

Missing You/Missing Time- Ok, hear me out, yes, the mystical bullshit tag is accurate, and de-aging is a weird concept, but !!! It actually serves this story very well! It is a fanfic that feels like a fanfic, but sometimes you want that, you know? Not every fanfic needs to feel like Little Women. Established klapollo first I love yous.

I genuinely think that Gumshoe x Miles is an underrated ship in Ace Attorney. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the appeal of Phoenix and Miles, hell I enjoy reading the fics and browsing the tags. But I think so many focus on just those two. Focus on how well they ought to know each other, and completely miss out on the other relationships within the games. Platonic or not.

In the games it’s said and shown multiple times that Gumshoe and Miles have a close relationship. If you ignore the generalization of Gumshoe in the later games, which is a tragedy because Gumshoe was a really interesting character in this first game. He had more dimension, and if he was done right he could’ve portrayed a really interesting viewpoint that isn’t looked at that often. One that touches on how the people within the police system view it. Not to mention how this topic will always be an important thing to discuss, for those who rely on said system and those who work within and alongside it.

But I digress this post isn’t about that.

What this post is about, is that there is a lot more depth to Gumshoe and Miles relationship than I think both the games and fandom give it credit for. There is a trust there that I honestly think run deeper than the one portrayed by Phoenix and Miles. The fact that they’ve worked closely together for years before the first game starts. The fact that in the Investigation games we get a glimpse of how their dynamic works from Miles pov, which yeah we get it in the third game but there’s something more to it in the Investigations games in my opinion. Also in the DLC of the first game, the fact that Gumshoe left Miles the brochure for that lunch place, will always make me smile. It’s the fact that it was such a natural thing, a simple “hey I know you aren’t doing well, here’s a thing I think you might like.”

Not to mention that Gumshoe was the only one who knew Miles was alive during That Year? No one seems to actually talk about that. Putting aside what I think the letter meant, the fact that not even Franziska, Miles’s sister knew if he was alive or not. But Gumshoe knew? Guys. Guys.

Again, I get the draw of Wrightworth. I do, I was also very attached to the ship when I first got into the franchise and fandom. But I do think that there is something to be said about the other relationships portrayed in game that aren’t overly stated.

If this post was shit I’m sorry, please forgive any errors I’ll work on fixing grammar another day. Maybe I’ll also talk about my opinion of langworth if anyone is interested in that.

gritting my teeth Kristoph Gavin has so much unexplored potential and at the same time it's great! Because it leaves a mystery and a lot of room for thought and analysis. If the franchise ended at AJ:AA/aa4 his narrative would really be perfect. But then AA:DD/aa5 and AA:SoJ/aa6 came out and he never gets metioned again. Like he never existed, like the impact he made on everyone from phoenix through apollo and klavier and even trucy! And it just makes it kind of shallow. He went to jail and we forgot about him?

Like sure Apollo turned on Kristoph with almost no hesitation- but that's because Apollo will do anything to uncover the truth, that's just Who He Is. That doesn't deny the fact that Kristoph was a respected and successful attorney who probably was good teacher and mentor for Apollo, and I ask, where's the inner conflict? And if not that, an explanation on why it's not there?

What about Phoenix who had a strange friendship with suspicion and distrust ingrained at the core of it with Kristoph? That was whole seven years they were playing a game with each other and hell, neither of them planned on ending it during turnabout trump! Phoenix asking Kristoph to defend him wasn't some trick or mindgame, and Kristoph's initial plan wasn't to get Phoenix convicted! He wanted to indict Orly and walk away with it.

And don't get me started on Klavier. We all saw how he acted during turnabout succession and then it's. Never mentioned again. Klavier is kind of like Apollo, he wants to seek the truth no matter how unpleasant it may be, but Apollo barely hesitated. Klavier was clearly trying to not believe it for a long time. For seven years actually. But after AJ:AA? Not a single line spared for him.

And one thing I'll give to Dual Destinies is the parallels between Apollo and Kristoph during the whole plot surrounding Clay Terran:

This? This is great. Ace Attorney always did a great job portraying similarities between characters through the sprites/body language.

And ynnow it's just, a real fucking shame because of course Kristoph Gavin isn't a morally good character, but he's a damn well written one! But it seems people writing games past AJ:AA didn't care about him.

(....okay so I just want to say I am writing this at 3am and it's kind of hard to find resources on the wiki cuz the internet is shittt at this hour and my brain is only half working so. I might've missed a lot of stuff that actually referenced Kristoph and I might just not remember. Klapollo Fic Reclist

I should really do these more often.

In advance of the Klapollo Minibang dropping a bunch of reading material for Klapollo fans (which I'm participating in!), I've decided to compile a reclist. All of these fics are SFW, hosted on AO3, and complete. I've done my best to source the authors' Tumblrs, if they have one.

A lot of my bookmarks with Klapollo are all really popular fics, so I decided to go through the tag picking for some less popular fics. The results are a mix of fics you've probably heard of and/or read, and some you probably haven't.

Without further ado, let's get into it.

My Notes: This fic is more about how Apollo sees the world around him, and the people in it. Includes the things they lie about -- and the things they don't. It's a fascinating lens for a fic.

Author's Summary: Klapollo cabin fic. That's really all this is.

Based on the events of "You Ever Been In Love?", in which Edgeworth gets drunk and rents a romantic cabin for Klavier and Apollo in Joshua Tree. Things go about as well as one could expect.

My Notes: You can, imo, read this without having read the Narumitsu-centric prequel (but you should read that anyways!). This fic can stand alone. I love the general laid-back atmosphere in this work -- even at its most tense, they're still on vacation. Almost all the stakes are emotional.

Author's Summary: You know, Apollo had high hopes for 2028. He and Klavier were actually kind of friends now, there were no impending disasters for once, and things were looking up. And then, literally on the first day of the new year... this happens.

Some cosmic force somewhere has got to be laughing at him. Some cosmic force somewhere definitely has it out for him, that's for sure. But the joke's on them, whoever they are, because his name is Apollo Justice, he's fine, and he is not losing anyone else... even if Klavier has already confessed to the murder Apollo can't believe he committed. And why does Mr. Wright keep muttering about this entire scenario being so familiar?

My Notes: I really enjoy the look into Gavin Law Offices pre-Turnabout Trump. All the OCs slot into the Ace Attorney universe well, and the way the author formats the cross-examinations is truly excellent.

My Notes: A sweet slice-of-life-y AU. The cats are all adorable for a bunch of plot devices.

My Notes: I liked this fic so much I drew fanart for it. Identity shenanigans, and a fun Kristoph-Phoenix-Apollo dynamic.

My Notes: I always love a fic with CSS. In-universe RPF can sometimes hit a little too close to home for me, as someone who used to be involved in RPF-dom but got out of it. This fic treats the subject seriously, but still has fun with it, which I like.

The one Klavier had trusted in that moment. The moment where he realized that - like his best friend Daryan - Kristoph had also been a murderer.

One who had manipulated others for their own self control. The one who desired the control so deeply. Having all the puppet strings cut loose after seven years of lies and deceit in three days time.

My Notes: Klavier recovery fic, spurred by Apollo. Trucy and Apollo’s siblinghood is great, and I love the general softness of this work.

My Notes: I never realized “Turning Catworth” had a sequel until I read this lmao. Animal transformation is a funny trope, and I love this fic’s expansion of the Gramarye lore. They are literally magic!

Author’s Summary: Trucy accidentally turns Apollo into a rabbit. Chaos ensues.

My Notes: I love this look into Klavier’s second job -- the musicians he collaborates with, the people managing his career as an artist. Both the law and the music are integral parts of Klavier, and this fic negotiates the balance.

My Notes: Some nice hurt/comfort. Glasses!Klavier is a nice headcanon that I enjoy.

With no one to go with, Apollo offers them to Klavier since surely, a rockstar would be able to find a date before then, but Klavier has a better idea—they go together and pretend they're a couple. That way, they both get a vacation, plus free food and wine.

And well, Apollo's never been one to pass up free food.

My Notes: A very good fake dating fic. I loved every bit of this.

To his surprise, he finds creative inspiration—and unexpected feelings—spending time with Apollo. My Notes: A humorous and light-hearted fic. Love Klavier finding inspiration in his pining for Apollo. Some parts of this might trigger second-hand embarrassment for those that easily get that.

My Notes: Love the usage of history here and the general structure & vibe of this fic.

“What?” Apollo suddenly finds it very hard to breathe. “Why?”

“Hell if I know,” Ema says nonchalantly, but then she turns to him with a smirk. “See if you can figure it out: I believe he told me, and I quote—ahem—'Ach, I would, Fräulein, but I believe Herr Justice would be more comfortable without me there.’”

Or, when Apollo comes home from Khura'in only to learn that Prosecutor Gavin is avoiding him, the last thing he expected was for Gavin to offer to let Apollo stay at his house while he looks for a new apartment.

My Notes: It’s been a while since I last read this fic, but I love the progression of the relationship in this fic.

I saw the mario movie, honor among thieves, barbie, bottoms, spiderman, and others I might be forgetting. I also watched red white and royal blue bc one of my friends is completely obsessed with it and watches it every day. for shows I watched utena, ace attorney anime, princess jellyfish, adventure time, and the end of the owl house(imo actually good ending despite the rushed development).

shows i dropped this year/didn’t finish: I watched MOST of stone ocean however netflix sharing rules kicked me off before i could finish ): I also watched, like, 2 episodes of veep at the suggestion of a friend and did not enjoy it much.

currently reading: well I'm not sure I am really currently reading much of anything(brain fried) but we've been passing around a copy of red white and royal blue because again one of my friends is obsessed with it so I'm hoping to read that, I hear it's really godawful

Summary: Phoenix Wright was not infallible, in fact he was a very real, very mortal man, and that would be an innocuous statement any other day, but today it might as well have been a death sentence.

For this week’s fic, how about something a bit more… humorous.

That’s the main thing about this one - it’s really funny. Which you might not expect from a story where one of the main characters gets shot. But aside from the first handful of paragraphs - which is Miles catastrophizing - the mood of this fic is extremely light. I’ve read a few ‘Phoenix gets seriously injured’ stories, and none of them are quite as fun as this one. Which isn’t a put-down at all! Those ones are just going for a different type of feel, you know?

Everything about this fic, even the title, feels as if it could have been an actual case in an Ace Attorney game. In fact, that’s the main thing I remembered about it when I first read this about a year ago. “Man, that title is fucking great!” I’ve never read something where the stakes are simultaneously so high (character gets shot) and yet so low (he’s fine). And a lot of the Wrightworth fics I gravitate towards have a tendency to be serious and/or sad - I blame canon not really allowing the characters to process trauma - so this one is especially a breath of fresh air. And it all feels perfectly in-character. All of the reactions, dramatic and blasé, are on point.

Favorite bit is probably Phoenix being jokingly dramatic while bleeding out, much to Athena’s distress.

hi! it's anon who took ages to figure out your shingou tag. just wanted to say i am now extremely unwell about them as well. also in the greg-haunts-the-bullet fic can miles & fran ever like, sense him? is it a straight up poltergeist thing where he invisibly knocks over wine glasses or does he materialize sometimes?

(put 'miles & fran' because i feel like mvk would be able to just. see him. but it would also be very cool if not)

Okay so I personally believe in ace attorney that spiritual powers and spirits in general are tied to strong emotion. Obviously some people are born with innate spiritual ability but I do believe that it's something that can be honed to some degree even in people who don't have predetermined spiritual blood.

Spirits themselves, and their ties to the living, are heavily affected by the emotions inherent to their death. The emotion itself doesn't matter. So, for instance, Mia's spirit lingers out of her love for Maya and Phoenix, and her resolve to finish her business left on earth. Dahlia's spirit, conversely, persists because of the immense amount of hatred and vengeance she feels.

Also, we talk about spirit channelling a lot, but never the fact that spirits are able to manifest on their own sometimes. Mia just does this. We see Mia photobombing all the time, and we know it's not just a meta thing, because Lotta straightup mentions there is a ghost in the photo. Phoenix also sees and reacts to Mia's ghost at the end of 1-2. Like she can just do that.

So I think this works in reverse, too. Certain emotions on the end of a living person can hone their perception to certain spirits.

So! As established, I think that Gregory haunts the bullet in Manfred's shoulder. Gregory is not a vengeful man, which pisses Manfred off to no end because Manfred IS and Gregory comes off like a real smug holier than thou asshole for this reason. But Gregory is not a poltergeist about it really--i just picture him standing there. Like he's just standing there in Manfred's study. And Manfred's like, what do u want. And Gregory's like :) and never says anything to him.

Gregory is actually not there to haunt Manfred, in fact he doesn't even know Manfred killed him as established in canon. If you were to ask Gregory, he'd just guess that he got ping-ponged to Miles' new dad for ultimate dadding potential.

Manfred, of everyone in the house, possesses the most unresolved emotion about Gregory. You might say, what about Miles? Like yeah, Miles is grieving in the most painful possible way, but Miles VEHEMENTLY does not believe in spirits. Stubbornly. With all his heart. He will not even let the possibility in. So he does not see, ever, that his father's spirit is hanging around and watching over him. If someone more clairvoyant were to tell him, he'd wave them off.

But! Franziska does believe in ghosts, because there are countless court cases where they have real legal precedent, and she is much more concerned with being a good lawyer than Miles is with his trauma.

Franziska's emotion that crystallizes this perception is one she shares with Gregory: protection. Franziska's core trait, beyond all else, is protectiveness. In her younger years, she is especially protective of Miles, and thus I believe her and Gregory share an unspoken kinship.

I think that to Franziska he is almost like a floater in the corner of her eye. All she knows is that she can feel someone there with her, sometimes she sees him in her peripheral, and crucially, he is golden. Just a golden spot of light. And she knows he's safe, she's never felt scared around him.

Sometimes as he's about to fall asleep Miles will feel a sense of warmth and calm wash over him that is uncharacteristic to everything he knows since DL6. if he ever chooses to see it for what it is, it won't be until late into his life and after a lot of convincing. But that's kind of what love is, doing good for the people you care about even when they are unable to see it. And Gregory, of course, loves his son.

I also believe that Manfred can just see him, yeah. But again, he's golden. He looks the same, but gilded. And when he appears to Manfred I like to think he still has blood soaking his lapel. Just to fuck w him. Y'know.

Hello to all the humanoids in here!

You can call me Pumpkin and this is my first time using Tumblr! I go by She/Her and I’ve honestly been eying using this since almost everything I wanted to see somehow originates from or has more content here. And by that I mainly mean Fanfics, Comics, and Artwork of course.

Another reason was because I have my own AO3 account under the name The_Pumpkin_Night_watcher and wanted to post things about my own fics, prompts, and AU’s that I come up with.

This is a whole new world for me tomorrow explore a I hope to experience it with everyone else!

Now then, for the Fandoms that I’m a part of, I usually rotate between what I’m into at the moment, but it always circles through the others eventually. That’s to say all my hyper-fixations get a turn.

I do like to post prompts and fic ideas from time to time, and if it particularly tickles my fancy, then I’ll explore the AU of fic idea a little more. But chances of it becoming an actual fic depend on whether I would have enough motivation to actually write something like it.

I also can’t promise consistent updates, my IRL schedule is wonky at the best of times and stressful at worst.

One thing with Fanfics is that I adore crossovers, it’s one of my favorite things to see two worlds collide to either create a mess or solve it.

Thing with Art

I like to draw and make art, sometimes of prompts or fics, but mostly just for fun and whenever I feel like it. I can’t promise da Vinci levels of art or be the next van goh but i’ll certainly make it good enough to look at.

i’m squiffy or eni/enigma! my birthday is july 27th and i’m an intj 5w6. i speak english, very basic elementary español, and i’m currently learning русский. this blog is mainly to upload art. my alt blog is squiffied and i plan to upload stuff related to my ocs there. Slash Ships to Get to Know Me

Bleep (@bleepbloopbotz) resurrected this tag game from the depths of her notifications and tagged me and Annie (@udaberriwrites) on it, and of course, Annie being Annie went and tagged me too, so yay~

It got me thinking a bit, and I figured I might as well, since I never actually sat down and listed all the ships I had - slash and femslash alike. I'm only listing the major slash ones for now, but I'll continue my list beyond that... for real, though, I need to do this same exercise for my femslash ships (yes, I saw your tag, Annie, and will get to it soon!)

**Rules**: Name at least five (no upper limit) slash (M/M) ships you love. Each from a different fandom. (Sadly, I have no pictures here).

1 - Twilight & Life and Death

I'd be pretty remiss if I didn't mention the two slash ships I'm actually writing right now - Carlisle/Beau (MM Bellisle) and Edward/Mike. Being the only writer of the former ship (as of today) is quite the interesting experience! At first, they were just convenient characters to carry out worldbuilding plans... but jokes on me. I became a massive shipper as I wrote and I suckered Annie into them too XD

2 - Teen Wolf

I need to mention both my slash OTP, Steter (Peter/Stiles), as well as the Sterek (Derek/Stiles) ship that is so popular and well-known. I almost chose Teen Wolf as the fandom for my concept instead of the Twilight/Life and Death combination I settled on, and if I had, I'd be writing Steter and my femslash Teen Wolf OTP, Allydia, right now.

3 - Fire Emblem Three Houses

I'd also be pretty remiss if I didn't mention the slash ship that got me writing fanfiction in the first place - Ferdibert (Hubert/Ferdinand). I have no idea what about these two managed to get me writing after 15+ years of silent lurking, but they somehow did and I'm grateful, since it ended up in me being here, meeting so many lovely people!

4 - NBC Hannibal

Quite a few people know how I love the Hannigram (Hannibal/Will) ship - and I love that it's canon. It's the perfect darker ship for me! Heck, fun fact - I was heavily influenced by NBC Hannibal's fantasy-like sequences when I wrote Apricity's Azure Mystique dreamscape!

5 - Scum Villain (SVSSS)

You know what's interesting? Scum Villain is the only MXTX novel I've read, despite MDZS and TGCF being way more popular. I'm quite the fan of the main ship Bingqiu/Bingyuan (Luo Binghe/Shen Yuan), but I also love the dark ship that is original Luo Binghe and Shen Yuan.

6 - Ace Attorney

Decided to end this list with one of my more lighter, older, and cuter ships in Narumitsu/Wrightworth (Miles Edgeworth/Phoenix Wright). Also, Momo is selling me on Klapollo (Apollo Justice/Klavier Gavin), so there's that! I love Ace Attorney in general and I'm pretty confident Capcom was intentionally making the whole thing ridiculously gay lol

You know, looking at this, I noticed two similarities across all of them.

First, that they all have at least a shade of darker themes among them. Heck, even Ace Attorney's Narumitsu isn't free of the ambiguity either, with the angst and all.

Second... I strongly favor the magical and supernatural stuff. I mean... there are vampires in #1, werewolves in #2, dark magic in #3, magical themes despite technically not being that in #4, heavenly demons and cultivation in #5, and the sheer absurdity present in #6

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try to respond to comments, even if it's just "thanks! glad you enjoyed it!" or something like that. Of course, if people ask me questions about the plot or make specific comments, I will always do my best to answer them (though maybe not always in a timely fashion...)

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I would say probably Paramour. Not to give too much away, but near the end Darklaw has to make a very hard choice. It's up to the reader to decide whether the choice was right/necessary or not.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

I usually end up writing best case scenario fics... I think I would choose Surrender, though that might surprise some readers. I think that's the most realistic happy end that this couple would have (realistic = in terms of canon-compliance).

7. Do you write crossovers?

Does it count if you're writing for a crossover game? [Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney] Probably not.... I'm more prone to write AUs than crossovers.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

LOL yeah.... there are a few that I can think of off the top of my head:

when I was actively writing Hellsing on ff dot net circa 2013-2015 there was this bozo who kept telling me I was going to hell for writing about this evil twisted demonic... vampire anime

comment on a fic with a clearly stated master/slave femdom tag "I tried to read this but it's too much like a degrading bdsm slave relationship!" (woah... really???)

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

aren't there jokes about ace people writing the nastiest smut or something... yeah of course I write it! I actually struggle with it though because I'm ace so I don't really... know what people find sexy? Readers have told me "this was so hot" and I'm literally like "thanks! (was it????)" I love reading smut though so I do what any good art student does (study masters, then try to fit my own style to what I learn).

I really like gfd (gentle femdom) so my writing tends to slant in that direction... What could possibly be more sexy than a loving exchange of power? Especially if you add enemies to lovers to the mix and that exchange involves a larger-than-normal amount of trust and vulnerability > i.e. "yes we literally fight to the death every Tuesday but you're the only person I trust to have me tied up like this" No one asked but personally I think I did very well with the rewrite of All Bets are Off... every time I read it I'm just like "wow op made this so yummy"

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

If I did, I don't know it. Funny enough though someone once tried to flag me that someone stole my work... that someone was me under a different pseudonym... so I've stolen from myself!

11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! I have a pretty laid-back policy; as long as you name me as the original author + give me a link to the translated work, you're allowed to translate my writing into any language.

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, but I'm not sure if any escaped the Skype logs... I don't even know if they're accessible now. But I did co-write fics back in the day with friends! I'd love to do so again sometime.

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Franken Stein x Marie Mjolnir from Soul Eater (For the record i also like Stein x Medusa bc I read either "I can fix him" or "I can make him worse" depending on my mood)

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Pas de Deux. It's not that I don't think I'll finish, but more that I'm not at the skill level I want to be yet so I can't bring myself to work on it.

15. What are your writing strengths?

Readers say that I'm really good with dialogue but I'm not sure... personally I can't say if it's a strength but I love when I can deep-dive into a character's emotional state and tear apart their personal fallacies while also pretending they are truths for the sake of the narrative... I hope I'm good at that.

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

Action scenes. I can't write fights to save my life. Also setting descriptions.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Personally I learned a lot from reading blogs like Writing with Color and Writing with Disabilities etc. about how to write non-English dialogue (or maybe a variant like ASL). I've tried to incorporate what I've learned in my writing and now I notice things, like when someone overuses foreign language or they write with a very strong accent for the character. Some things I've learned are also contextual! For example, FFXIV writers include accents in their dialogue boxes. That's why I allow Rhoswen to speak with the "ye / fer / n' / 'o" etc. in her dialogue in my fics. But for a character like Father Anderson, in my rewrites it's easier to mention he has a Scottish accent, then maybe include one or two variants in the dialogue rather than having the entire thing be nigh-unreadable.

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Unpublished: A Bug's Life. I wrote a fanfic comic for my younger brother on notebook paper one day when we were kids

Published: Hellsing. I published a fanfic in 2012 with an OC main character not realizing that people thought that was cringe (but I still got a lot of positive comments for it so!!!) I started revising it in 2015 so there's an unfinished version you can read here.

19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?

I keep saying I'm going to write for the Paper Magician series but it's genuinely so good that I don't know what I could possibly add to it.

20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

There's no way I can choose just one fic, so here are my top three:

The Rites of Spring: I think these two should kiss and also dance in the town square. I hope OP finishes it one day.

A Curious Attraction: The original had more words than a standard novel. I hope OP finishes it one day.

Architects of the Ashes: Zenos should not be fixed but he should be put in a sandbox sim. I hope OP finishes it one day.

SONIC: something traumatic happened to him that made him scared of water in the first place, thas for sure methinks. he also just doesnt really show his negative emotions and he moreso just tries to 'dealw it' instead. i have headcanoned this for years as many others have and it appears to be somewhat canon in frontiers which is pretty great. he plays the electric guitar and is a pretty skilled singer and yeah. chilli dawgs r his comfort food....... loves rock electric and heavy metal and sometimes listens to it on his runs. pretty comfortable w being independent . also this is not a headcanon but i dont think his idw iteration is that out of character. he sees pretty much everyone (rivals and frenemiesalike) as friendos

AMY: has some form of abandonment issues which is what makes her as clingy as she is. generally used to feel left out and misunderstood from sonic n others in games like adventure and adventure2 but their relationshipsget better. listen. listen i heard someone on tumblr hc amy having abandonment issues and it hasnt left my miind since. she used to feel embarrassed by herself and her personality but became much more expressive of herself as time went on bc she starrted feeling more accepted. DEFINITELY writes fanfiction and fancomics and draws fanart and likes theatre(this is canoon actually). has meetings w the girlsTM where she just reads their fortune n everything. she also said in one game that she aspires to BE LIKE sonic and i have hcs abt that as well. can b mischievious and sneaky. has a tarot card reading BUSINESS this girl earns money for this !! shes very magiical girl bc she can pull her hammer out there, tell the future, turn invisible, has a 'sonic snese' but this is not a headcanon this is canon. plays the violin. loves to create fun outfits. into knitting and crocheting. . yeah i have more

TAILS: he can get pretty insecure of himself at times, heholds high expactations of himself and feels like if he doesnt meet them he might as well be a failure. ooopslol. he also hates when ppl misinterperets who he is as a person and when they undermine how skilled he is. he sometimes doesnt really let others know how he feels and hides it w a positive attitude. his gizmo is his comfort item. sonic was his first friend. the reason why he acted cocky in lost world and constantly pointed out how they shouldnt trust eggman (although it was super ooc) is bc of how insecure he was and he felt like sonic didnt trust himenough. and he feels bad abt it. hm. he also likes to draw sometimes and is generally skilled and precise, partly bc he has to draw blueprints for his creeations. one of them orphans. wags his tails/unintentionally starts flying when hes excited (stimming woag). hes not really SCARED of thunderstorms but they ARE a sensory nightmare for hiim (loud, bright/0). sonic sort of 'taught him how to make friends'. he still has cosmo in the form of a plant inside his house. he has many bunkers/ Sometimes he has a hard time accepting help (inherited from his older brotherlol). his tails are an nd allegoryOK ILL SHUT UP NOW

STICKS: ok this is gonna sound wild and its definitely not original but. she has abandonment/truusst issues relatedto her former parents that have something to do w the government which is one of the reasons she became so hateful of th egovenrment. dont ask (actually do if you want to). generally feels free to be herself but there are times when she feels ashamed of her wild side ig you couldcall it. very creative.

I was tagged by @eemamminy-art a while back and wanted to do it for Bera! Body language varies person to person, and even the same actions can mean different things to different people so this was interesting to do! I do think Bera is much more expressive with positive emotions, and when things get more serious he actually hides his reactions fairly well, or forces more 'positive' traits to mask his feelings.

Honestly, before this the only thing I had set for Bera was the one animation of Gumshoe in Ace Attorney when he scratches the back of his head.

Fic Round Up 2022: Questions and Stats

I posted the actual list of fics in a separate post to keep things from getting too unwieldy! I produced 38 written works across 10 fandoms this year, which means that despite writing less than 2021, I actually dipped my toe into different waters! Thank you @queenaeducan, @mxanigel & @little--abyss for the tags! 💖 Now, onto the questions. Words posted: 68,731

Additional Words Written: Probably another 10k or so all up scattered across various half-written exchange treats...

Highest Kudos: At 69 kudos (nice) it's White Noise, my first, and so far only, foray into Hot Fuzz fic! Definitely could be tempted to write some Butterangel again. 🧈👼 Highest Kudos to Hits ratio: Possibly because of recency bias (it hasn't had time to accumulate more hits!), but it's with no place to go, the angsty Franziska ficlet I posted just before Christmas this year! (That being said, there are a few fics of mine with less hits, so I think it's doing well regardless 🥰)

Highest Hit Oneshot: two in the bush, a Cersei/Sansa fic I wrote for nonconathon this year. Never underestimate the power of porny fic in a large fandom: this work received four times as many hits as the next fic on the list (which was Kristoph/Phoenix hatesex).

New Things I Tried: I did a lot more drafting and rewriting and starting things earlier than I have in the past, and I think it's really improved the quality of my writing, and I've found that I actually quite enjoy it? Surprise, surprise, this was the first year I tried writing after starting ADHD meds 😅 (the autism really takes over once I can actually focus, lol.)

Fic I Spent the Most Time On: All's Fair, the arranged marriage Meresino fic I wrote in an exchange for @venatohru! I kept wanting to add things to it, and then a whole actual plot evolved that I had no hope of actually completing in the time allocated, so I had to then rework the actual fic I submitted to be properly standalone and ahh. It was so much fun, though! Still working on that sequel...

Fic I Spent the Least Time On: Funnily enough, also an exchange gift for @venatohru! This time, an Ace Attorney twincest fic, (be)longing. I literally sat down, wrote the first draft in forty minutes, and when I looked over it again a few days leter to edit, discovered it didn't really need much improvement!

Favorite Thing I Wrote: Basically anything from Orsino's POV, which is still a massive surprise to me. Here's a couple of my favourites. From Precipice:

And Orsino was so, so tired of losing more of his own to the crushing oppression of the Gallows. It had been bad enough when he had been an apprentice, templars breathing down the necks of those who didn’t learn fast enough, or conversely, those with too much ambition. Only those who were able to adequately toe the line between these two different types of danger had successfully escaped notice.

Fortunately, Orsino’s childhood in the alienage, what little of it he remembered, had served him well when it came to knowing when to keep his head down and when to speak up. Make too much noise, or too little, and one could disappear.

It was why his parents had said nothing when the templars had come for him. Better the Gallows than the alienage, better this than dead.

He’d always held onto the hope that so long as he lived to see another day, he might one day bear witness to a better world, and perhaps even be granted the chance to help shape it himself.   

Only here in the Gallows would he, an elf, a mage, an elf and a mage, be granted such an opportunity. Only in this unique set of circumstances could Orsino be the kind of man who might ascend to the ranks of First Enchanter.

It hadn't mattered that no-one else had wanted it, that the chalice was tainted, nor that he had most likely signed his own inevitable death warrant. In the absence of a silver spoon in his mouth, or indeed, any spoon at all, Orsino would always make do with whatever scraps of success he could scavenge.

But also the entire masturbation scene in end and the beginning, wherein Meredith becomes an unwilling passenger in Orsino's body after The Last Straw and nobody's truly having a great time. A tinier snippet because I don't want to make this post too nsfw:

Meredith had known that someone like Orsino would find her actions indefensible long before the red lyrium had entrenched itself in the recesses of her mind, promising her the power to fix everything she had broken, the ability to save everyone she had failed —

I suppose, Orsino interrupted, dead is a type of safe.

Favorite Thing I Read: My reading tastes are wide and eclectic! (I've actually been working on a small project to do themed fic recs, starting with weekly DA recs, so keep an eye out for that!) If you're really burning for recs right now, my bookmarks are pretty reliable!

Writing Goals for 2023: I'm actually hoping to write less and read more. (Both in fandom and otherwise.) 😅 I'm planning on doing less exchanges and working on more of my own fic ideas.
