So, this is something that can happen to your little seedling:
Tumblr media
See how the leaves are just stuck inside of the seed? That actually happens pretty often, especially if you plant a lof of seedlings!
This is not the intended way for seedlings to grow; they're supposed to wrangle their leaves out of the seed while still in soil, so they could use the hold of the soil as a way to pull out of the seed. Once they push the seed outside, together with the leaves, there are 2 problems: there's nothing they can do to pull out of the seed because nothing is holding the seed, and, the seed has now dried up, stiffened, and the leaves got stuck to it.
So if you just leave your stuck seedling like this, thinking 'oh it will get out eventually', it's more likely that the seedling will die. However, you can help this! You can use your hands to free the seedling, but carefully.
Keep in mind that the leaves are still curled inside, if you try to yank them out, they are more likely to break than to actually slip out. Here's a way that works for me 90% of the time.
Spray the seedling generously with water.
Leave it like that for 2 minutes, so the seed becomes a little softer, and the leaves absorb the water enough to become unstuck from the seed.
Gently pull on the seed. Sometimes the whole plant will want to follow, in which case you hold the stem with your other hand.
With a bit of luck, you're done! The leaves are now free and the plant is likely to grow!
Tumblr media
Sometimes the seed will be at the very tips of leaves, and even if you yank it off and break the tips, the plant can still survive. I've broken 50% of the leaves in the past and the plant still survived, sometimes even just a bit of leaf is enough to absorb light, to grow another leaf.
However, sometimes the seedlings will have 90% of the leaves still inside, and that requires some very careful and gentle coordination to pull out of. Sometimes it helps to pull it out at an angle, sometimes loosening the seed with water will help, sometimes I even squish the seed a little, break the leaves a little, but they survive. 10% of these are just impossible to save, if you break the leaves so badly that 90% of them are broken off, then the plant has no chance.
I feel like this problem could also be mitigated by planting a little deeper than I do, but I like shallow planting so that's not going to happen (I want the plants to get out of the soil quickly so I don't bury them deep).
Good luck saving your little seedlings! I had to pull out about 12 seeds in the last 3 days, and I only ruined one plant.

Today was the day to get all my tomato seedlings potted up. I think nine tomato plants is going to be more than enough. Also got a couple small trays of lettuce and salad greens planted for babyleaf salads.
I freaking love low cute the tiny tim tomato seedling is already. My black magic pepper will need to wait another day for me to scrounge up a larger pot for it.

June 2022: Another Hot Day
We’ve been under a heat advisory all week. Today, it hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit with a 110 heat index. Our pepper seedlings were feeling the heat:

Saw your tags on that post about swamp milkweed about having trouble getting it started--you may already know this, but milkweed seeds need light to germinate! They only need a light dusting of soil on top of them (and putting them somewhere with a lot of light helps!); if you can't see the seed through the soil, it's buried a little too deep. They basically want to be laying flat on the surface of the soil rather than poked down into it, with just enough soil on top to help them retain moisture. Yes this does make it kind of annoying to manage moisture because you don't really want them drying out either (sorry 😭) but I hope this helps!! I mention it because this is the most common issue I see with people trying to grow milkweeds from seed. They also want 4 weeks of cold stratification (cool temperatures like in a fridge while also being in contact with moist soil; you can plant your seeds, pop the whole pot in a ziplock/cover it with cling wrap, and just refrigerate it for a few weeks) so don't forget to do that!
You know
it's really funny
because i like to call myself the self-proclaimed milkweed queen of tumblr (at least on my gardening blog but still)
And yet
I
constantly fucking forget about the light thing
IDK if that'll fix all my problems (the soil at my house is pretty sandy so I think that's the problem when it comes to transplanting at least) but regarding getting those little shits to germinate??? that might be the ticket
(one of the other problems I face sometimes is the seeds deciding to mold when they're in the fridge cold stratifying, i lost a good chunk of seeds to that last year but i don't see any signs of it happening yet this year so fingers crossed everyone)

Put my container garden together this morning.
Tumblr media
Cherry, of course, helped.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's my single petunia. The big containers have hananero peppers and banana peppers.
Excellent timing on my part: it's supposed to rain tomorrow!

so MAYBE I spent 4 hours in IKEA on a whim instead of cleaning my flat BUT! BUT!!!!! I bought several forms of Tiny Shelves which as any fule kno makes everything instantly tidier.
added yet another tier to my stack of tea/coffee/cocoa/misc shelves to control The Collection. got trays under all my draining plant pots so I can actually water them. and I got a new monitor stand which is wide enough to fit both my A3 tablet and my A5 tablet underneath and has a shelf with enough space to trade out my work and home laptops easily. plus it's like 3in less deep than my old one, so that's freed up a bunch more desk space.
also of course vitally we did get the Small BLAHÅJ which was the whole point.
I also found a portable freestanding bag situation (toybox from the nursery section) which is both a) a way better option for storing glass recycling and hauling it down 3 flights of stairs than my previous solution "small cardboard box which holds 8 jars/bottles until one of us can be bothered to transfer them into a bag" and b) HAS A REALLY CUTE WHALE ON IT
plus we (Sam) got some new plant friends and the next size up of a lidded pyrex box I've always found super good for lasagne. and Sam got several things he's needed for a while (as well as a wee shark)
in summary did I spend too much money at IKEA and fritter away a full day walking around aimlessly for fun to the point of exhaustion? yes. was it extremely sensible and adult and I'm actually correct in all regards always? perhaps.

Repot day has rendered our dining room table useless at this stage. Now I just gotta harden all these guys off (with only my two hands… golly, don’t make me use my mouth) so I can throw them to the elements.
I hear Mother’s Day is a good benchmark for frost, but I really. Do not think I can wait that long.

A funny thing I realized when I thought about donating my extra seedlings to the VA rec therapy garden, I can NOT donate any peppers because like half of those are peter peppers and as much as the old vets would love growing "chilli willies" I don't think the message rec therapy wants to give is "here, eat a dick" (luckily I have plenty of friends in the valley would love to play penis roulette with their gardens)

I have once again planted an unreasonable amount of seedlings on my balcony. The tomatoes on the right picture are the ones sown in January, they're almost ready to get planted outside! I'm considering planting a few in March just to see if there's a chance they survive. If they did they would make huge tomato plants and produce earlier than any other plant, and if they don't make it, I have plenty more!
Even though there are so many plants I can hardly fit them on my balcony and it is overwhelming to keep up the watering, I deeply need all of these as my emotional support. Also there's plenty of stuff that didn't make it! Onions never grew even though I tried multiple times, and my sweet potato just rotted instead of growing new seedlings. The flowers are not really coming up either, I only have a few unknown little flower plants.
I'm still planning to start another wave of tomatoes and also to start cucumbers, squash and cantaloupes so this is not over. I wish I had a greenhouse or a conservatory for this!

I have not had good germination this year for peppers only two of the nine I first started came up, then only two of the six in the second sowing came up. Which is honestly probably for the best as I don't have space for ten pepper plants. My tomatoes did way better than I expected. Nearly all of them germinate with ten out of twelve coming up. Which means I likely be looking to give some of them away to friends. I also need to pot up my black magic jalapeno and most of the tomatoes this week.

6/18/23, pt 1
Part 1 will concern my veggie garden, and part 2 will cover the goings on at my parents’ house. Long entry under the cut.
Good news: the forecast is finally sunny all next week with highs in the high 70s-low 80s.
Good news: my grandma picked the first solid harvest of SS 100s. They taste great raw, and we like to pan roast them for breakfast. Sweet and strong umami flavor, like mushrooms.
Tumblr media
Bad news: we suffered more tomato casualties. 3-4 tomatoes are pecked out on the ground, and a few more seem to be missing. Either I didn’t put the net back securely enough, or something chewed through the bottom corner. They only seem to take the Black Cherries. What could leave a mark like this?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good news: bed 1 is doing quite well. Borage, green onion, basil, and radish are all germinating, and the tomato plants are recovering/making new growth.
Bad news: the surface is full of fungus gnats. I may apply a hydrogen peroxide root drench periodically to keep them in control.
Tumblr media
Good news: I found 2 new ladybugs, 2 pupae, and a few spikes babies climbing under the eggplant leaves. I didn’t see them for a few days so I was worried but they’re all good!
Bad news: caterpillars and the aforementioned fungus gnats. I pick off the caterpillars when I see them.
Good news: the squash is forming true leaves and the marigolds are blooming nicely.
Bad news: one sunflower fell over, so I cut it down and left it out. Maybe the birds will like it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bad news: I’ve decided to call it quits on the seedlings and starts. Basically everything on the blue bench and windowsill. True leaves never formed, and there were so many gnats both inside and outside the house. I’ve dumped the dirt popsicles into the compost bin. I’ll admit I have trouble with pots and containers - they’re so delicate and finicky, I much prefer sticking seeds/plants directly in the bed and whatever lives, lives.
Tumblr media
Good news: it’s such a relief to stop looking at those dead pots and focus my efforts on the raised beds which are doing significantly better. I actually transplanted one Chablis pepper to bed 3, just to see if it can recover. It’s a bit close to the eggplant, but I’d rather it get shaded out than dry out in the sun.
Quite honestly, I have been feeling some gardening fatigue - waiting for things to ripen while some other things don’t pan out. But I’m trying to learn from the good and bad news, and overall the garden looks significantly better than last year.
