I was watching The Philip DeFranco Show, and he talked about how 'save the bees' has actually done a substantial amount of harm to a lot of bee species that do not produce honey for human consumption. And that was a very good topic to touch on within itself. But in a later show, he shared one epic comment on the subject:

Happy Father’s Day.
Thank you for showing me it’s okay to cry when I feel sad, thank you showing me that it’s okay for me to be scared when I’m afraid
Thank you showing it’s okay to act silly and laugh.
Thank you being there.
Happy Father’s.

This week on You Are What You Love, Sequoia Simone joined me to talk about how A Very Potter Musical started the domino effect of what her life turned out to be today. We talked a ton about how growing up watching YouTube content shaped us -- and how it helped us become creators in own right.
If you’ve listened to the episode, you know that we also talked about the unique way online creators have of being personal to their viewers, and that some of our experiences meeting those creators were, in fact, perfect. I talked a little bit about meeting Philip DeFranco, and how kind he was to me. I dug up the photos I referenced, and looking at them again just reminded me where I was at the time.
The live event I mentioned was in 2013, which was pretty far in to my gap year between high school and college. Almost all my friends were living all over the country, and I’d lost the idea of consistency and honestly, community. Phil’s show was a constant for me at that time -- I’d been watching his videos all throughout high school and middle school, and when I was suddenly mostly by myself, I had a daily friendly, energetic face on my screen.
And having that kind moment from Phil in person has stuck with me. It helped me when I needed it, and it sparked an urge to give that same kind of help with my own content.  To be a creator means that you are, ultimately, giving people a break from reality, and hopefully a kind face. You don’t know what’s going on with the person on the other side of the screen, but if you make something good enough, you might give someone a break, and a minute to breathe.
If you want to catch the whole episode, where we talk about AVPM, the Vlog Brothers and Nerdfighteria, and becoming creators ourselves, you can listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or find You Are What You Love on your favorite podcast app here.

You know, whenever I see a post about the latest YouTuber who’s a sensation with millions of subscribers no one’s heard of, I think of Phillip DeFranco.
Not because he’s one of them, but because he’s the one always bringing up these YouTubers I’ve never heard of.
“Absolutely massive content creator with 4 million subscribers.” - Phillip talks about some YouTuber I’ve never heard of.

Today's episode is all about fanworks! Sequoia Simone, podcast host and fan extraordinaire, joins host Marissa Tandon on You Are What You Love to talk about the YouTube sensation, A Very Potter Musical, and how it started the domino effect of her life.
We discuss how the poorly recorded YouTube parody helped Sequoia redefine her understanding of what comedy could be, brought her back into the fandom at a critical time, and started the domino effect of who she is today. Tangents include how YouTube made creative careers more accessible to people everywhere, Nerdfighteria, and the beauty of fandom as a whole.
Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or find You Are What You Love wherever you get your podcasts.
After the episode, be sure to join our discord server to hang out with other listeners. We also think you might like the two episodes Sequoia references in hers: Bo Burnham with Mike Schubert, and High School Musical with Molly Burdick!

Dr. [Randy] Blazak [hate crime researcher and sociology professor at the University of Oregon], who actually previously went undercover with extremist groups to study them, caught on to [the fact that Trump was immediately embraced by Extremist groups] right away- saying [that] Trump's 2016 campaign announcement [even] used the same rhetoric he heard while doing research about Klan rallies. And that rhetoric […] brought people into what he called a funnel.
"There are these sort of mainstream issues at the top that pull people into this dark funnel […] The mainstreaming of that rhetoric has brought more people into that funnel. It's not just sort of guys in rural Montana who are building bunkers and […] automatic weapons in their basements. It's now, you know, moms in Michigan" […]
Most of the people who believe these theories are not necessarily a part of a hate group. In fact, [Oren] Segal [the Vice President of the ADL's Center on Extremism] and the [Anti Defamation League] worked to identify January 6th insurrectionists and only 25% of those they found were known to have ties to Right-Wing extremist groups. And that's also another key thing: Whether you're a card carrying member or not, anyone can catch wind of these narratives and buy in to the hateful agendas from the sidelines. And that is equally scary.
"These are ideological movements. Most extremists are not part of any actual group. They just borrow the language, the ideology, from various spaces and that's how they get radicalized. And we have not done enough as a country, as a society, to frankly push back against the normalization of that [kind of] hatred".
