Thoughts about Pilot FriXion Erasable Gel Pens
Tumblr media
I'm going to be honest, I didn't love these at first, but they've grown on me a lot over the last few weeks of using them. It's become my go-to pen while at work (and is gradually becoming my go-to at home, as well), where I am oft to make mistakes when writing, and being able to erase saves me from using up a roll of Wite-Out after just a few weeks. More thoughts and pictures under the cut.
Like I said, my initial impressions of the pens were Not Great. When I first tested it out, I was really disappointed in how light the ink was. I would definitely consider the pigment more of a dark grey than a black, but I suppose that is the cost of it being able to be erase via friction. It doesn't bother me all that much anymore, but I do still prefer the look of my Uniball Signo 207 Micro gel pen.
I will say, the ink in these pens is very runny/wet when it first drops to the paper. The ink drops to the paper pretty inconsistently from the Frixion Ball Clicker pen I originally bought in size 0.7mm, so some strokes of the pen will look darker than others or just darker in different parts of the pen stroke. I don't find this quite as noticeable with the Frixion Point Synergy Clicker pen in size 0.5mm. I wouldn't say the ink flow is super consistent with either pen, but there's rarely any skipping or near complete lack of ink flow, like I tend to get with a lot of my Paper Mate InkJoy gel pens. At a glance, it looks almost as consistent as my Uniball, so I can't complain too much. (Dated writing is the FriXion Synergy and the "testing 1 2 3" is the Uniball Signo.)
Tumblr media
Despite the ink being pretty wet when it drops to the paper, once it is dried, I have no problems with it streaking when rubbed or marked over with a highlighter or marker. It does take significantly longer to dry on smoother paper like the Tomoe River Paper found in Hobonichis, but it takes almost no time to dry on the paper I use in my 6-ring journal. Even though it smudges more easily on TRP, it's at least erasable, so mistakes are less noticeable than if I were to use Wite-Out. (Below are notes I took in my A6 Hobonichi notebook about music a student was sharing with me at work.)
Tumblr media
A downside about erasing with this pen is that even though most of the pen's pigment is lifted, there is still a ghost of where the pigment was left on the page. It's hardly noticeable unless you know to look for it and if it's already been written over again. Also, I've found that thinner paper will warp and form a slight divot in the paper from being erased, and if you erase of the same part multiple times on thicker paper, it will have the same results. And I suppose this is just a natural result of using a hard tip that needs to be pressed hard and fast enough to the paper to create friction that will remove the ink. It can also be harder to get the ink to drop onto the paper where it has already been erased over more than once. Not really things that make or break the pen for me, but it kinda killed my idea of using this pen for temporary/daily checklists I could reset by erasing at the end of everyday. (Below are close-ups of writing tests. There's a lot going on with these pages since I used them for a lot of tests, but the main focus is meant to be the FriXion pens.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I guess all that's left is the aesthetics of the pens. I wasn't super fond of the bodies of either the 0.7 or Synergy 0.5 pens, but I did have a slight preference for the body of the 0.7 body after having both. I originally planned on just putting the 0.5 ink refill into the 0.7 body, but the eraser on the Synergy pen is slightly more tapered than the 0.7 and works better with the thinner pen tip. I'm also not generally someone who prioritizes pen aesthetics for the most part. I like have cute/pretty pens, but I generally prefer something that suits my functionality needs.
Tumblr media
Overall, I do really like the functionality and convenience of these pens, and while I do wish they were able to produce a darker black and more consistent pigment, I don't really have any qualms with how these pens look on paper with what I use them for.

Pen Review: Pilot FriXion Ball3 Slim 3-Color Multi Pen (0.38 mm - Pearl Green)
I have such a soft spot for multi-pens. I decided to try a dedicated Pilot Frixion 3-Colors Slim in pearl green ($9) with three different color options and came with 0.38 tip size (which is my favorite gel pen tip size). The Frixion 3-Color Slim hanging out with all the other mult-pens I’ve accumulated. I think I have one from each of the Japanese brands: Zebra Sarasa, Pilot Coleto, Uni Pencil…

Top 5 pens
yay thank you for asking!! :D
Fountain pen (specifically the one fountain pen I have, bc that's the thread holding my life together)
Muji 0.5 ballpoint pens
Pilot be green greenball ballpoint pen (used these religiously for years before we got a Muji-store here and switched to those)
Muji fountain pen. It was my gateway fountain pen so it deserves a spot and like it's still nice & I take it with me when I go to places if I'm not feeling like dealing with the pressure of having the #1 pen with me (if that gets lost, I will pretty much die ig)
this one random one that I have no clue where it's from, has no labels or name. Black-ish ink, looks like it's made from wood but I bet it's some weird lifelike plastic
also I want to include my ultimate least-favorite-pen mortal enemy. A dishonorable mention if u will: those mf Pilot Frixion ones that you ''can erase'' and u never rly could, and they just smudge all around until it's way worse than what it'd been if u'd just scribbled over ur failure (which is what those pens are)

Discovered a witchy tip that I wanted to share but I didn't know where so I'm sending it to you: my favorite brand of pen is Pilot Frixion Erasable pens. The ink is heat reactive and disappears when hot (like from friction when rubbed with a rubber eraser). And today I realized they are great for magic! You can use it to write on things (ex. Fabric) and then heat it up any way you like (ex. A clothing iron) to complete the spellwork.
I had a job interview today that I'm really excited about so I drew sigils on my feet for luck and luck in jobs, that way every step I took charged the sigils and once my feet got warm enough the ink disappeared to cast.
You could also write on like fruits, plastics, or even paper and gently go over it with a candle or lighter flame to erase the ink without having to burn anything. The pens are inexpensive and you can find them basically anywhere that sells office supplies, plus erasable pens are just useful to have around.
Happy witching!
Ooh ooh yes! I have some of those! They're also very useful as fabric markers for stuff like embroidery because they have a very fine tip for intricate designs, and they go away when you iron over them.
I SHALL ADD ON TO YOUR IDEA THOUGH: Did you know that the ink will reappear if it gets cold? Try writing on a piece of paper, do the little friction thing so it goes away, and then put the paper in the freezer for a minute. MAGICAL REAPPEARING INK!
I'm sure you could brainstorm plenty of ways to use that effect too!

I'm not going to put a title on this one, I just have to share this with you guys. It's totally off topic, but sort of on topic too?
Anyway, I put up a post a while back about my lukewarm opinion regarding magical notebooks. I still stand by it.
But I lucked into this notebook the other day called Rocketbook. The version I have is called the Wave, their prototype.
I'll cut to the chase. This thing is the USDA Choice of notebooks. So long as you're using a Pilot Frixion pen or highlighter, you can erase the entire notebook with a quick spin in the microwave. You can do this up to 5 times with the Wave. Their newer one--the Core--can be reused up to 100 times.
What's so useful about that? On it's own, not much besides being a redemption for shameless people like me who shred through notebooks like a cat does wet food. But its the app that really makes the notebook kick ass.
I know, I know. Roll your eyes as much as you want. I did when I first heard they had an app. But get this. Each page comes with a QR code in the corner that helps the app's camera position the page. Then it automatically converts your page into a PDF and uploads it to the cloud service of your choice.
It goes further than this. You can actually configure the notebook to send specific pages to specific folders or even specific cloud services by using the category marker at the bottom of the page. The app can also auto-title your scans based on your handwriting.
Okay, cool. So I've talked up this notebook without a sponsorship, so what?
I'll tell you so what.
I have a folder on my OneDrive with sub-folders based on subject. For example, I keep a daily ritual log. Once I've filled the notebook, I'll go back through and scan every page in the Rocketbook that contains that log. Then the app will upload it as one single PDF to my ritual log folder in OneDrive.
I did something similar yesterday with I Ching. I transferred my notes from my working journal to my Rocketbook, then uploaded the three pages together as a single PDF to my divination folder.
The benefit is two-fold. I now have a digital copy of my handwritten notes, which I've always wanted a method for. I also now have an easy way to sort those handwritten notes for further expansion and digitization.
It's honestly changed my entire world and I highly encourage you guys to at least check out their pocket notebooks for a low-cost trial run. I happened to get mine as a promo item through work, so I couldn't tell you personally whether it's worth the price for you; but in my experience once I destroy this one with notes I'm going to purchase a 100-reuse one. And then I'm going to destroy that one also.

HI your most recent embroidery illustration has bewitched me both body and soul can I ask about it?? How did you do the line weight variations? Did you double up or is that a different stitch? What size of hoop is that? Is it large or are you using some kind of ultra fine floss? Do you wash the pieces before you paint them to get the pen off? What kind of fabric do you typically use? I don’t mean to be a bother this is a lot I know but WOW. I am captivated
Hi!! Of course you can, I sincerely love to talk about my embroideries but I feel like I'm being too much sometimes, so I'm so glad you'd ask!
The line weights I get by using different thicknesses of thread and by going over sections several times. I use polyester thread because it's stringer than mouliné cotton (DMC and Anchor for example) but I used to use these in the past and had awesome results too.
For stitches I use back stitch and stem stitch (with some couching to secure the more severe curves of the stem stitch).
The final wooden hoop is 8" but that is just for presentation; I work with a plastic 10" hoop and draw an 8" outline for guidance. The plastic hoop keeps a better tension over long periods of time and you don't have to keep tightening it constantly.
The pens I use to trace the drawings over a light table are heat-erasable (the brand is pilot frixion!). When I'm done stitching I can just iron over them or hover a hairdryer to erase the ink. To transfer the drawing I've also tried printable water-soluble adhesive interfacing but that has been a lot of trouble because, while dissolving the paper part is easy, there's always a sticky residue that it's very finicky to get rid off without disturbing the delicate stitching…it's a pain.
The fabric is cotton muslin! I try to find a hefty, good quality one which is a bit heavier than normal…but any good cotton should work. I personally prefer unbleached fabric because the warmth looks better in my opinion.
I also have a video about the process if you're interested in that. My process and methods have changed in the past 2 years but it's still a good overview:
youtube
Hope this helps!

I got into fountain pens early in 2023 and I got gifted my first kinda expensive pen ($70ish is a lot but these fuckers get more expensive rq. Either way, thanks mom ily) and god I love it. My handwriting is still pretty bad but it's improved since writing with fountain pens is so enjoyable for me and it motivates me to get better. One of my pals joked about there needing to be frixion fountain pens (erasable) and I knew enough about fountain pens to show him some. It's something so stupid to fixate over but it's brought me so much joy this year.
My college grades have gotten better this year. There's a lot more to it than just the better note taking but like. Wanting to write with my pen leads me to taking better quality notes cause I slow down and try to make it look nice. Plus you can change out the inks for fun colors. You can also paint with the inks if you dip a brush in em.
Is there a point to this post? Not really. Maybe a tip to make tasks you usually don't like more fun by challenging yourself or adding some novelty but that's secondary. Maybe it's to make you try out fountain pens (shout-out to my TWSBI eco, that thing is a workhorse. Pilot metropolitan is a pretty good starter pen too). I'd like to say I don't know but I know it's because I'm absolutely psyched about writing with these things. Just one little thing that kinda stood out this year that isn't fandom or whatever. Something small that I'm so happy about that I post about it on Tumblr for no one to care about.
Anyways, happy near year. I hope anyone reading this can find something small like this to be insane about :)
