Someone like this has already revealed themselves to be a dishonest actor.
For starters, it's a loaded question with an unwarranted assumption built into it.
Tumblr media
And secondly it also assumes that there's no legitimate opposition to religion or religious belief, that disbelief in magical nonsense could only come as an unhealthy response to trauma or distress. That belief in supernatural flapdoodle is the default, normal and reasonable, and you must justify why you don't believe, rather than them needing to justify why you should. A denial of their burden of proof.
This sort of nutcase is not worth engaging. They've already displayed their intellectual dishonesty, and despite often claiming to be "genuinely interested" - can't tell you how many times I've seen that - they're not.
Point out their fallacies and send them on their way. They'll act all innocent, but it's as insincere as their opening.
Don't give them oxygen and be done with them.

OPPENHEIMER: A Lesson on Presuppositions
Beware of condemning any man’s action. Consider your neighbor’s intention, which is often honest and innocent, even though his act seems bad in outward appearance. - St. Ignatius of Loyola.
I finally saw the movie Oppenheimer and it was amazing. Director Christopher Nolan stand out as someone who can take a subject matter, in this case the historical development of the Atomic bomb and the early policy disputes regarding the Atomic Energy Program, and imbue it with a powerful ethical consideration. Throughout the movie you journey with the struggle that Oppeheimer has with Lewis Strauss and by the end you are forced to reflect and re-evaluate how we all make unfortunate judgements on others based on assumptions we place on who they are or what they say and do.
The movie was based on the way that Lewis Strauss (played by Robert Downey Jr.) went out of his way to discredit Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy) and to remove his influence from the world of atomic energy policy making. In the movie, Strauss’ motive is very personal and narcissistic. He was convinced that Oppenheimer had turned the scientific community against him. At the center of that assumption is a brief conversation that takes place by a lake in Princeton between Oppenheimer and Einstein. After the conversation Strauss comes by and greets Einstein who seems to snub him. From this unfortunate event Strauss begins to pursue vengence against Oppenheimer.
The black and white portion of the movie depicts the Senate hearing for the cabinet nomination of Lewis Strauss in 1959, after the events that take place with Oppenheimer. During this process it becomes clear that Strauss orchestrated the persecution of Oppenheimer and because of this he losses the cabinet nomination. This infuriates Strauss even further feeling that somehow Oppenheimer continues to influence others against him. The Senate aide (played by Alden Ehreneich), after recognizing Strauss’ anger and jealousy, suggest that he truly does not know what was said during the conversation between Einstein and Oppenheimer and that it may be possible it had nothing to do with him. This is when we hear the actual dialogue between Oppenheimer and Einstein.
Tumblr media
The discussion was based on the fear that shared by many, while it was an important goal to get the bomb before the Nazi’s built there own, it was also feared that such a powerful weapon could not be controlled. One scientific concern was that the bomb would start a chain reaction of explosions that would not end, resulting in the destruction of Earth’s atmosphere. This fortunately did not happen. But later Oppenheimer recognized that what he had started was a political chain reaction that could also lead to a nuclear holocaust. This, he told Einstein, is what he believed he unfortunately accomplished. This would give anyone a moment of pause as they reflect on their new social reality in light of the massive destruction their science has brougt forth. This explains Einstein’s somber and contemplative mood as he walks past Strauss. Strauss however assumes a personal attack and begins to plot against Oppenheimer, to the detriment of the global community who will loose out from Oppenheimer’s caution regarding nuclear policy.
The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola warn us against making negative presuppositions on others. There is a great and practical spiritual wisdom from the Ignatian tradition. St. Ignatius knew that his missionaries would encounter new people and experience new cultural norms that could allow for the missionary community to misinterpret those they would encounter. There would be plenty of unfortunate opportunities to make personal and negative assumptions. Ignatius trained those who would be formed by Jesuit spirituality to always keep an open mind and to never assume a negative interpretation to how they experienced others. Fr. James Martin tells us:
The Presupposition steers you away from anger and so provides the other person with the emotional space needed to meet you on more peaceful territory. It may even invite him or her to change... The Presupposition also helps you stay open to change, growth, and forgiveness. (Martin, pg. 236)
The Presuppositions are a lesson we should all take some time to reflect on. The great contribution of this movie is to see how this Ignatian wisdom played out in the dynamic between Oppenheimer, Einstein and Strauss. A single event that then, unintentionally, led to an unfortunate series of events because of a false assumption based and a negative interpretation. And because of this we continue to live with the consequences of a nuclear arms race that threatens the existence of mankind.

On Context, Presuppositions, and Keeping Legitimate Skill Real
Traditional martial arts tend to get too wrapped up in their own mythos.
It’s not that all training needs to be “live;” indeed, there are a number of skills that when employed against resistance in anything but the most skilled and sensitive of hands can result in debilitating injury.
What it is, though, is that we all need to continually examine our presuppositions, and the context(s) upholding them. Without this, legitimate skill tends to drift into the realm of the fantastical, and real training tends to devolve into excercises in belief and dogmatism.
As we train, it’s not uncommon for motion and legitimate skill to become more and more subtle, and more and more efficient. And, if we’re not careful curators of context, the same body of skill has a tendency to become more and more esoteric wherein not only the technique but its presumed effects can be know (or conjured up) only by initiates. This is a truly sad, and extreme state of affairs, that is unfortunately too common.
For a martial art to be a martial art, it must be rooted in reality. That is, it must be applicable to real expressions of violence in context. Granted, this potential applicability exists in a vast expanse of socio-cultural paradigms cleaving through time. Nonetheless, a martial art must not be confused with a dance routine, nor any other more generic form of physical culture.
For a martial art to remain a martial art, it must remain conversant with its context, and in critical dialogue with its presuppositions. The shadow side of such vigilance though, is the devolution of legitimate skill due to a perceived lack of applicability to another specific context (presently, “the octagon” is a chief culprit).
All in all, the sage advice of the German philologist Max Mueller applies to the religionists he addressed as it does to martial artists seeking reality and relevance: when it comes to [contexts], knowing but one you know none!

I joke a lot about it now but I wish there was a way for fandom history to be remembered. Not the drama or just a list of the popular tropes, but the intercultural stuff. The things you only get from being there, or close enough to it.
Like how in 2016, irondad basically started as a fandom by killing May Parker off and instituting Tony as thee dad of all time, ranging anything from best dad ever or struggling but either way— Tony even after Civil War immediately sees Peter like a son. Or how by 2017, Peter as an avenger or going on a field trip was the most popular thing for him to do, with Flash Thompson being an abusive jerk that beats Peter so much, he was scared of him (and Tony would come to save the day). Like how by 2018, fanon irondad took precedence of over anything, not just the movies but even the comic book history— skip westcott, a character from a PSA comic from the 80s, becoming such a known and understood character that he’s part of the “Spider-Man lore”, but only in so much as it gave Tony a platform to save the day, not Peter. How by 2019, in the scenarios and rewrites of infinity war had taken on a different lens into thousands of fix its after Endgame, ranging from making Peter jealous of Morgan or writing out that little girl entirely. Like how in 2020, quarantine and writing in Peter at marches was an active trend, to the point of cosmic irony.
It’s not just knowing the tropes, but knowing the vibes. The history. The things that now, don’t make any sense or just have different assumptions for what the reader believes to be true. I reread a fic recently and was so struck by the notes which poked fun at the trend of killing May off when you could just coparent, not just because it was funny (and a little disconcerting) to see all the defensiveness of irondad writers in the comments who made their names by killing May/writing the kind of codependency they passed off as found family— but also how it both fit into and deflected against established fanon, not canon. Of course Tony is going to speak Italian and be an active, engaged presence in Peter’s life that not only has lab time, but has dinner with him once a week and asks about his friends. Of course May is a nurse that works long hours that keeps her busy and away— because Tony can “babysit” a 15-year old New Yorker. Of course Peter is a teenager but acts more like a 12-year old in temperament and excitability, speaking like a walking meme.
This particular fic was so radical imo not just because May is 1) alive, 2) active in the plot, and 3) isn’t abusive or dating someone abusive, but because it ALSO presumed things as normal that weren’t common— like Rhodey being Tony’s actual best friend, Pepper being Tony’s fiancé who actually showed up, Peter being friends with MJ and Ned, having a crush on MJ— all things that still aren’t terribly popular in that subset of fandom, but now come with more canonical evidence that supersede the fanon.
I’m not sure if there’s a point to this, maybe this is a thought that should’ve stayed in the drafts. But this kind of fandom lore™️ is too good to let go.
Especially since I know irondad isn’t the only kind of fandom with a shared history that’s changed over time.

I know it's Nein lockdown but in practice for me that means I have all CR-related tags blocked so anyway my absolutely out-there theory from the last C3 episode, specifically Allura mentioning the likely change in the weave of magic, is that actually now I do believe in the possibility of Daggerheart Campaign 4 whereas previously I was like eh probably not getting another longform campaign

TODAY IN PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY
Landgrebe and Phenomenological Philosophy of History
Saturday 09 March 2024 is the 122nd anniversary of the birth of Ludwig Landgrebe (09 March 1902, Vienna – 14 August 1991), who was born in Vienna on this date in 1902.
Landgrebe was Husserl’s assistant, and so thoroughly conversant with phenomenology, but Kant and Heidegger may have been equally influential on his philosophy of history. As a phenomenological philosopher of history, Landgrebe sought to identify and free himself from the presuppositions of philosophy of history, hence the requirement to distance himself from traditional philosophies of history.

not me writing dialogue for characters whose non-thw voices I haven’t heard in any capacity in almost a decade. I am going off of vibes and vibes alone here. And also all the dialogue from all the other httyd book-movie crossovers I’ve read recently. But mostly just vibes.
