NOMAN’S EUCHARIST | ABV: 35.7% | Yield: 2.56 fl oz | Improved Cocktail, Alternative/Regional Spirits, Old Fashioned, Smoked 

Rinse glass with absinthe (I used an atomizer/mister)

2 fl oz or 60ml Sotol

.25 fl oz or 8ml Yellow Chartreuse

.33 fl oz or 10ml Prickly Pear Elixir or syrup (some are less sweet, like the one I use from Floral Elixir Co. You might want to start with no more than a quarter ounce or even less and adjust to taste)

2 dashes Angostura Bitters 

1/2 dropperful Bittermens Burlesque Bitters 

Some (untreated) Oak wood chips 

Kitchen Torch

ON SMOKING YOUR DRINK:  If you have a cocktail-smoker set like I show, which are cheap to find online, [and usually come with some chips of orchard woods, oak, hickory, etc that are safe to smoke -- remember, do not smoke wood treated with chemicals like you’d buy to build with] I’d stir the drink together over the ice in the glass you’re serving it in, then follow your smoker tool’s directions 

ALTERNATIVELY, if you have a a fireproof surface [like a baking sheet] you can set the material you want to smoke with on it[this works with herbs as well as woods!], set it alight, and place the serving glass over it while you mix the other ingredients briefly with ice in your mixing glass. It’ll be served on a rock, so it doesn’t need too much pre-dilution. Invert the smoking glass, place a large rock in it, and strain the drink into and serve. 

I wanted to really stretch and challenge myself on Wolfwood’s drink in terms of the ingredients used. The fact is, most staple crops we use to make alcohol are incredibly water thirsty. Sotol is a spirit that has been made for ages, but until recently wasn’t broadly available -- in the US, the Texas-made ‘Desert Door’ Sotol will be easiest to find, but explore and look around. Unlike Tequila and Mezcal, it’s made with a desert shrub, referred to also as sotol or desert spoon. It’s not related to agave at all, and unlike agave-based spirits harvest doesn’t require digging up the entire plant -- allowing it to regrow, regenerate even, much like Wolfwood. Yellow Chartreuse is to match the religious order theming, add some more herbal nuances to the grassier notes in Sotol, and is commonly believed to be sweetened with honey, which keeps it compliant with my admittedly arbitrarily imposed restrictions. 

The smoke, herbal alpine liqueur and restrained, southern desert flavors makes this a more complex sip than Vash’s Life and Love. But definitely sweeter than today’s second drink, to post in a few hours, and the third TRIGUN Old-Fashioned/Improved Cocktail drink in this mini blog series, which will be a little... sharper, let’s say.

Preparing for the High Holy Days in Algiers

As the first fruits of they year appeared in the street markets, Jewish housewives busied themselves preparing festive dishes, jams and jelly for the High Holy Days. The chidren enjoyed waffles, biscuits and ice cream. Caroline Elisheva Rebouh shares her memories of childhood in Algiers in the Morial newsletter (With thanks: Leon):

In the last days of the summer holidays, mothers were busying themselves with the household chores in readiness for the Jewish High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Succot.

The families gathered around festive meals. They needed to prepare traditional dishes in advance for guests to sample, and especially  pre-prepared confectionery and pastries.  At the time, few of us had a refrigerator.

The markets overflowed with fruit of all kinds: housewives selected quinces, white-flesh sweet potatoes, figs, and pinkish grapes.

The quinces were chosen carefully to be almost sure that they were not “visited” by unwanted worms. They were rinsed,  peeled and cut into quarters –  hard to do as the fruit was hard. The seeds were removed and reserved separately for jam and quince jelly. People loved it  at the end of the Yom Kippur fast!

The fruits were boiled to soften the flesh so that  the sugar syrup seeped into the flesh of the fruit and the sugar remained clear. It was during this operation that the seeds (quince cores) were added so that the pectin let the syrup gel. Some of the boiled quinces were cooked over low heat. During the prolonged simmering,  sugar was added in small quantities,  while  the mix was stirred to make a fruit paste.

The figs were also quickly turned into a light-coloured and appetizing jam.

The grapes: we chose a variety called “bou amar” : the grapes were round, relatively large and pink. Mothers armed their children with fresh feathers  to deseed the grapes. The jam was also pinkish and pleasant, and some mothers would wrap the seeds of the grapes in fresh compresses to make jelly.

A little later there would appear small apples of a very pale green and with light pink spots on the side which were used for the Rosh Hashanah  seder and which were called Kabyle apples. Small white and pink peaches with firm, tender  and fragrant flesh  were also called Kabyle (Berber) – no doubt coming from Kabylia.

In Algiers,  we children ignored the entire selihoth period. We only experienced the season through the pleasure of tasting small amounts of candy floss, fine biscuits and other delights.

During and at the end of  summer,  small stalls “flowered” on street corners: the yaouled (children or young teenagers) offered us freshly-picked prickly pears which they peeled with dexterity and presented them on fig tree leaves  so that our little fingers did not touch the  thorns. Other yaouled offered grilled corn on the cob: we savoured them on the benches in the public gardens where we played with our cousins, neighbors and classmates.

From time to time, we gathered around small confectioners who tempted us with sugar of different colours which they sold in small quantities.  We sucked them by holding them between our fingers and then crunched our teeth on them.

The waffle merchants  announced their passage by waving wooden boards with handles on both sides. festooned with  mini-shutters which tinkled with a dry and dull sound.

At that time we liked our waffles a little thicker than ice cream cones. They were rolled up in cones and stacked in a sort of cylinder about one meter high. The merchant placed it at ground level to serve his young customers.

But fine biscuits weren’t the only popular waffles: at Grosoli, a popular ice cream parlor in Algiers, the ice cream cups were decorated with a fan or a fine rolled biscuit.The Bitone company also marketed what were called “funny wafers”  : they carried short slogans like “You won” or “I love you”.

When many years later we found ourselves in Marseille, we could no longer find ice creams like those of Algiers.

Prickly Pear Mojito

Hello from North Dakota*

*pretend I’m writing this on the scene and not two weeks after my trip.

I wanted to do something fun with the cactus liqueur bestie and I picked up on a whim, hence the prickly pear mojito.

This drink was challenging due to (i) great difficulty in acquiring prickly pear syrup or prickly pear fruit (wegmans if you’re reading this, I want my $12 back) (ii) me realizing my recipe was hot garbage after dragging all my shit to my friend’s house (iii) said friend missing several vital drink-making components such as tablespoons and ice (her roomate had bar tools though which was nice)

All of that being said, I genuinely enjoyed making (and drinking) this one. I also feel that this was a turning point in my mixology/wizard drinks journey—rather than following the recipe to a T per usual I was able to adapt and synthesize instructions from several different recipes, in addition to including my own twists (i.e., adding cactus liqueur and changing up some of the proportions of spirits.) This is also the first drink I’ve made using my hyperfixation station (pictures to come, I’m being so normal about this entire hobby).

I also learned that you can, in fact, take alcohol on a plane (in checked bags), that you should practice making a drink at least once before showing it off to your friends and making a fool of yourself, and that there’s a huge alcohol superstore in ND but not in the DMV and I’m kind of mad about it.

I would really love to experiment with this one some more—more specifically I want to continue messing with proportions and additions like shots of tequila or other liquors. Unfortunately I’m out of soda water and all the mint has gone bad but one of these days I’ll do it! I also really want to use different garnishes—attempt #2 used mint and a lime slice, but I think prickly pear fruit would also be fun, if I could actually find it.

Rating: the prickly pear mojito gets a 4/5; a bit challenging and required running all over town, but such is the nature of wizard drinks, and I really learned a lot from this one. Also very tasty/pretty.

“Suletta?Your mother is thirsty. Could you get me something to drink?” 

For another Suffering Suletta Sunday, instead of drinks based on our favorite Spacian (and Earthian!) kids and their MS suits like our previous Witch from Mercury drinks, a recreation of the drink seen in Episode 7, “Shall we GUNDAM?” might help you get through your feelings other today’s episode. 

This is a pretty straightforward riff on the Prince of Wales, but of course, Nortrette hasn’t cultivated pineapples, but tomatoes. The use of Genever was partially inspired by the bottle, but also that gins(which Genever is precursor spirit to) go well with acidic vegetal flavors, but also are frequently made with rye, keeping the homage to the Prince of Wales surprisingly on point. I also choose it because Miorine’s family name is Rembran, which calls to mind Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn.  

For a show-accurate presentation, I went with a pilsner glass. Between this and the Garak drink I made last year, this shape of glass is a difficult one to find in the right proportions. 

Special ingredient note: if you have another floral syrup(not lavender - could be soapy, color would be off) cherry blossom syrup or [even more appropriately] rose I think those would also work. I simply wanted something that reinforces the garden-like flavors, and the Prickly Pear elixir seemed... apt for Miorine’s early-show personality. 

Heir of Benerit | Champagne Cocktail, Improved Cocktail, Party Cocktail 

Shake together  1/2 ripe roma tomato, cut up  2 fl oz Oude Genever .5 ounce Floral Elixir Co Prickly Pear Elixir OR .33 fl oz simple syrup 1 dash Angostura Bitters  1 dash Hopped Grapefruit Bitters 

Pour into chilled glass, top with champagne, cava, or prosecco. And don’t spill it - You’ll never know what might happen while you’re distracted! Especially when your mother’s speaking to your financée.

prickly pear is the fruit from nopales cactus! they’re sweet and kind of taste like a mix of berries and melon but the flavor is super unique! the cactus pads are also edible and used in lots of recipes but the fruit is great for anything u want to add some sweetness to! there’s a few local brands that make candy with them but they’re also great when made into a syrup or jelly or even in margaritas with a tajin rim mmm 😌😌 prickly pear ice cream is a favorite of mine but there’s also sour belts that i think are rlly good!!!

Part of Universal CityWalk Orlando’s newest escape room attraction, The Great Movie Escape included a bar with drinks themed around the two franchises guests could “escape” from: Back to the Future and Jurassic World.

These alcoholic drinks were:

Smoke & Mirrors, made with Bigallet China China liqueur, Noble Oak Bourbon, Bourbon Barrel, agave nectar, and chocolate bitters,

Wake-Up Juice, made with Old Overholt Rye whiskey, Kahlua, and Angostura orange bitters,

Grand Banks Swizzle, made with Appleton Reserve Rum, lime juice, Angostura bitters, and popcorn falernum with a small bag of caramel corn as a garnishment,

Gigawatt Glow, made with New Amsterdam Vodka, blue curaçao, Sprite, lime juice, and Angostura bitters,

Raptor Bite, made with El Jimador Blanco Tequila, lime juice, triple sec, mango nectar, jalapeño, and Hella Smoked Chili Bitters,

Silent Era, made with kahlua, espresso stenciled with the Great Movie Escape logo, New Amsterdam Vodka, and pistachio syrup,

and Hill Valley Gin & Tonic, made with New Amsterdam Gin, tonic, Angostura bitters, and dry curaçao.

There were also two mocktail options for non-drinkers. These were Nublar Cooler (lime juice, pineapple juice, jalapeño slices, agave nectar, and tonic) and Hoverboard Highball (Prickly Pear syrup, Sprite, lemon bitters, mint, and lemon juice).
