Kyle Boyd, Ohio inmate A745752, born 1995, incarceration intake in 2018 at age 23, released to probation 05/30/2022
Involuntary Manslaughter, Conspiracy to commit Robbery
Boyd has been sentenced to prison for his role in the murder of 19-year-old Luke Cabbage, of New Philadelphia, who was found dead in Newcomerstown on Sept. 11, 2017.
At a hearing, Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Judge Edward O'Farrell sentenced the Mingo Junction man to four years in prison for involuntary manslaughter, and two years for conspiracy to commit the robbery that led to the murder. The sentences are to be served at the same time.
Judge O'Farrell said he would consider judicial release for Boyd, 23, after he serves 18 months in a state prison, provided he commits no crimes or gross violations of prison rules while incarcerated. Upon his release, he is to complete a drug-and-alcohol abuse treatment program, lasting about six months, in the Eastern Ohio Correctional Center in Wintersville. After that, Boyd is to be under 4 1/2 years of supervised parole, with no use of drugs or alcohol and no criminal activity. He was given credit for 39 days already served.
Judge O'Farrell advised Boyd to work to overcome the substance abuse he described as "maddening" because it leads to people languishing aimlessly in the drug culture.
During the sentencing hearing, it was revealed that Boyd admitted during a presentence investigation that he would express an interest in addiction rehabilitation if it would improve his standing in the eyes of the court. In an interview for the same report, he acknowledged using Suboxone and marijuana after being released from jail on his own recognizance.
The presentencing report also said Boyd was judged unruly as a juvenile, cited for seven traffic violations, and has convictions for marijuana and underage consumption of alcohol, according to defense attorney Steven Stickles of Steubenville.
During an unusual discussion at the sentencing hearing, the judge, defendant and attorneys discussed some details of the day of the murder. During that discussion, Boyd said that although he knew codefendant Arnoldo Moreno-Orduno had a gun, he did not believe he would use it. He said that he would have warned Cabbage if he had known he was going to be shot.
Boyd said he was "drugged out" on the night of the shooting, which occurred after a party for Orduno's 19th birthday.
Also raised was the issue of whether Boyd took cocaine from Cabbage after he was presumably dead. Michael Ernest, assistant county prosecutor, said he had; but Boyd's defense attorney said that allegation had been made by a codefendant in only one of nine inconsistent statements given in the case.
The gunman, Moreno-Orduno, Ohio inmate A740738, from Dillonvale, is serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for firing a single fatal gunshot into Cabbage's back. He pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, four counts of murder, one count of aggravated robbery, two counts of conspiracy and one count of tampering with evidence. Jordan C. Robinson, Ohio inmate A743238, from Bloomingdale, is serving seven years in prison for involuntary manslaughter, aggravated robbery and conspiracy. Robinson drove the three men to Newcomerstown from Jefferson County, where all three lived.
Ernest said Boyd's involvement in the crime was consistent with Robinson's, as both were accomplices. Ernest said seven years in prison — the same as given to Robinson — would be appropriate for Boyd.
Boyd's attorney, Stickles, argued that Boyd should not be sent to prison because he was asleep during the robbery and murder.
If a defendant like Boyd were sent to prison, Stickles said, "After about 18 months, we've just made a lifetime criminal. He's 23. If you save him, you save society, judge."
Although Boyd pleaded guilty in May, the prosecution and defense had not agreed on a sentence at that time, except that the maximum would be seven years. The sentencing range for involuntary manslaughter is three to 11 years.
In court, Stickles argued that Boyd had become a better person after the murder than he was before it.
Boyd's cousin, Anthony Gerald Orsini, said Boyd was working for him as a reliable employee in his construction business.
The victim's mother said one of Luke's friends considered suicide after his murder. She said the tragedy has left her with anxiety, depression and hate.
"I just want Kyle to know what he took from me," Kathy Cabbage said. "My Luke was a gentle, kind, funny, intelligent boy. He never left home or hung up the phone without an, 'I love you, Mom.' I never dreamed I would live life as a grieving mother. My heart is forever broken."

Then isn’t it the Hatian’s duty to oppose slavery and western intervention?
I never said they shouldn't have rebelled, but perhaps the slaughter of all the white adults and kids, and the mixed adults and kids was wrong.
And perhaps, it's also wrong to blame Haiti's mismanagement on people other than their own corrupt government, for instance, why blame mass deforestation and overfishing on a NATO conspiracy rather than Haiti's own incompetence?
Hell, it seems the only reason the Dominican Republic managed to grow from being a forgotten Spanish colony, was to reject Haitian hegemony over the island, declaring their own sovereignty in 1844.
Later the Spanish Crown recognized their independence in 1865, while Haiti chose to live as the people they overthrew did, they made the lower class their slaves while the upper class lived like slavers.
The leader of Haiti created a system of coerced plantation agriculture, it was a military government run by the greedy, in essence, they overthrew tyranny and imposed further tyranny that led to race based genocide.
From 1824-26, while the island was under one government, they promoted the largest single free-Black immigration from the United States in which more than 6000 immigrants settled in different parts of the island.
Today remnants of these immigrants live throughout the island, but the larger number reside in Samaná, a peninsula on the Dominican side of the island, the Free American Blacks even chose the Dominican over Haitian rule.
From 1843-1915 Haiti underwent many governmental changes, most caused by revolt, however these revolts also replaced tyrants with tyrants, mostly caused by the Haitian military.
Though, for a brief period beginning in 1874, Haiti experienced democratic peace and development, this period of relative stability and prosperity ended in 1911, when revolution broke out and the country slid once again into disorder and debt.
From 1911 to 1915, there were six different presidents, each of whom was killed or forced into exile.
In this time, 200 Germans chose to migrate to Haiti and integrate, they invested in infrastructure, education and so on, it greatly helped Haiti, however their aide was given indiscriminately, many opposed factions in Haiti used the German money to fuel revolts and violence.
In 1915, Vilbrun Guillaume Sam established a dictatorship, but in July, facing a new revolt, he massacred 167 political prisoners, all of whom were from elite Haitian families, and was lynched by a mob in Port-au-Prince.
The US at the time had taken on quite a large sum of Haitian debt, and summarily occupied Haiti from 1915-1934 to get Haiti to pay off its debt, under the supervision of the US Marines, the Haitian National Assembly elected Philippe Sudré Dartiguenave president. He signed a treaty that made Haiti a de jure US protectorate, with American officials assuming control over the Financial Advisory, Customs Receivership, the Constabulary, the Public Works Service, and the Public Health Service for a period of ten years.
The Marines and Gendarmerie initiated an extensive road-building program to enhance their military effectiveness and open the country to US investment. Lacking any source of adequate funds, they revived an 1864 Haitian law, discovered by Butler, requiring peasants to perform labor on local roads in lieu of paying a road tax.
In 1915, Haiti had 3 miles (4.8 km) of road usable by automobile, outside the towns. By 1918, more than 470 miles (760 km) of road had been built or repaired through the corvée system, including a road linking Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haïtien.
In 1919, a new uprising began vowing to 'drive the "invaders" into the sea and free Haiti, the revolutionaries were killed and the Marines posed with their leader's corpse.
The Great Depression decimated the prices of Haiti's exports and destroyed the tremendous financial gains of the previous decade, the Haitians believed this was a return to when the elite of Haiti would rule with an iron fist, and began another revolt.
This led Herbert Hoover to appoint two commissions, including one headed by a former US governor of the Philippines William Cameron Forbes, which criticized the exclusion of Haitians from positions of authority in the government and constabulary.
In 1930, Sténio Vincent, a long-time critic of the occupation, was elected president, and the US began to withdraw its forces. The withdrawal was completed under US President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), in 1934, under his "Good Neighbor policy".
The transition government was left with a better infrastructure, public health, education, and agricultural development as well as a democratic system.
The country had fully democratic elections in 1930, won by Sténio Vincent. The Garde was a new kind of military institution in Haiti. It was a force manned overwhelmingly by black Haitians, with a United States-trained black commander, Colonel Démosthènes Pétrus Calixte.
Most of the Garde's officers, however, were mulattoes. The Garde was a national organization; it departed from the regionalism that had characterized most of Haiti's previous armies. In theory, its charge was apolitical—to maintain internal order, while supporting a popularly elected government. The Garde initially adhered to this role.
I can go on, Haiti was fucked over by Haitians more than it was ever fucked over by foreigners, so I say, the only thing you can blame whites for is Haiti's very French way of showing civil unrest.

Hi! I saw that you write for Prison of Plastic. You don't have to do this request, but I just thought it would be adorable.
Could you do a Naven Nuknuk & Baby Reader (platonic) one shot where the reader is a child of him and his wife. The reader is crying at night and Naven goes to comfort them?
Again, you don't have to do this request, I just thought it was cute. Sorry for bothering you.
Song of the Sea—Dad!Naven & child!reader
Hi!You were actually my first requester and it made me really excited to write this! I didn’t really know how to write a long story with a baby reader, so i did a small drabble and some headcanons/scenarios!
[also note i have not watched/read prison of plastic,i was going entirely off of his wikipedia page so i hope i am somewhat in character]
WC: 760 total.Abt 400 for the drabble
warnings:none
Turns out, Naven was not well suited for parenting. Sure, he dealt with children most of the time. But with an actual baby, he’s more nervous than usual. A lot more nervous.
He rubbed his eyes, shuffling a bit before sitting up. While his eyes were adjusting to the light,he immediately felt for his wife. Who was still asleep. It was quiet for a moment. Until sharp cries rang from the cot attached to the bed. He scrambled up, doing his best not to wake his wife up, she had been doing most of the parenting while he was working. And Naven felt like she deserved her sleep more than he did.
He walked over to the cot, picking up the child carefully. He wasn’t exactly sure what they were upset about. He was used to dealing with children slightly older than infants. Or a lot older. He sat back down on the bed , blinking slowly as he lightly rocked the baby back and forth.
“hush now, mo stóirín. Close your eyes and sleep”
He sang softly, doing his best to remember the song his father had sung to him when he was a child.
. They made some babbling noises, slowly reaching their tiny hand up and latching onto Naven’s bright green hair. It stung a bit, but he was just happy they had stopped crying.
He smiled softly, all of the bad moments of parenting were worth it. He hummed a lullaby under his breath, slowly lowering the baby back into the cot, they looked like they were going to start crying again. So he offered his hand, watching as their tiny hand wrapped around his finger.
He sank to his knees so he was more comfortable, he expected it to take a while for the baby to get back to sleep. So he just kept singing.
“waltzing the waves…diving in the deep.” he rested his chin on the side of the cot. Closing his eyes for a moment. He didn’t realise that he himself had also fallen asleep until he woke up in his bed.
His neck ached, and he turned over to see his wife talking to the baby as if it were a fully developed person. He sat up,rubbing his neck. “you fell asleep beside the cot,” she said, smiling at him. “I made you some rose tea, it should still be warm.”
he would be the type to worry a lot about minor details all the time, he’s too soft to be strict to you so he ends up being the more fun parent
he can be a bit of a pushover, and if you do decide to abuse it (poor naven) he’ll end up being really stressed. Until your mom sits you down and tells you. “stop bullying your dad you know he has anxiety”
He’s really good at comforting, once when you were a smaller child, you had gotten overwhelmed in a grocery store, and he had quickly diffused the situation easily. It’s quite admirable and he ended up giving some other parents tips
He would definitely make pillow forts with you once you got to like 7-9 and have fort sleepovers, never on a school night however
Speaking of school, the teacher side of him wants you to succeed. But he doesn't want you to end up burnt out like he had when he was younger. So he’s very sweet and reassuring that he values you despite your grades and makes sure to pay plenty of attention to you either way.
When you’re old enough, he definitely teaches you how to bake. You spend a lot of time making apple pies or apple crumble.
Naven doesn’t know this, but his wife managed to catch a video of him getting an entire bowl of flour on his head by [name] one time when you got caught stealing chocolate chip cookies when he turned his back.
There’s also a “painting” you did when you were three sellotaped to the fridge…it’s been thirteen years and its still there. Its not moving.
He used to read stories every night so you could sleep, more often than not, you would wake up with your dad lying in the most uncomfy looking position holding a book in some way. You would always have to weasel around him as to not wake him up
no matter what you want to do,or who you are as a person. You bet he’ll be incredibly supportive.
oh and if someone bullies you?He sends Zora afterthem^^

Expand Your Knowledge
A well-known saying declares, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” While many forms of unethical imitation can lead to serious consequences, there is nothing wrong with adopting the practices of some master gardeners and other high desert residents when you’re trying to learn new tricks to implement your garden vision. Here are a few resources to get those creative juices flowing.
The Mojave Water Agency’s list of demonstration gardens https://www.mojavewater.org/conservation/mwa-demonstration-garden/
This website maintains a list of demonstration gardens throughout the high desert area, showcasing sustainable growing techniques, the use of native plants, and tips on water conservation and maintenance.
One of the more unexpected and obscure items on this list came from the city of Adelanto, CA. Perhaps unfortunately most well-known for its ICE detention center and private prison, the city also claims two demonstration gardens. The city hall location also has an accompanying virtual tour on Youtube.

Another place to get great ideas is through master gardening courses or content online or through your local university extension. Typical course coverage consists of setting up a garden, soil, water, and chemical considerations, composting, propagation, pest control, and more. Even if you don’t sign up for a course, there is plenty to learn, and the answer to almost every question is out there, if you just take time to look.
If your interest is piqued, visit the Gardening Know How blog’s page at:
To find out more about ways to expand your knowledge, you can visit The American Horticultural Society
Growing anything, from a plant in your garden to your knowledge about sustainable practices in harsh climates, is a process that demands time and effort. The reward is in the journey as much as the final product itself. Keep growing; keep learning, and remember, I’ll be here to cheer you on every step of the way.

Hot Potato
After that whammy of a season finale, I have fire parent feels. ;w; *Note: This is set after the season one finale, so spoilers abound.
Fic: "Hot Potato" [FFN] [AO3] [pfio]
Pairings/Characters: Vince Leone/Sharon Leone
Rating: light T
Words: ~760
Additional info: family, hurt/comfort, 3rd person POV
Summary: After Bode's parole hearing, Sharon asks how Vince can be the way he is in the face of everything. Vince shares a theory with his wife.
      "We trusted him—I trusted him!—but I knew it. I knew it. I knew he'd slip up…!"
Vince had two competing thoughts on his mind, too, well before they made it outside to their truck in the parking lot outside the prison, beyond the parole board's reach and hearing…but then he unlocked the truck, made sure Sharon got in okay, and slipped in behind the wheel. And he took a breath while he squinted at the stark sunlight through the windshield. His squint was more of a wince while she kept moving up and down the scale in pitch. "Sharon."
      "I knew he'd slip up…!"
He reached for one of the clenched fists in her lap, missing when she pulled away from him. "Sharon, you sound like a broken record."
As if her physical recoil hadn't been enough. Sharon turned that white hot, steely glare on him, nostrils flaring and the vein in her neck throbbing; his wife had sailed past "mad." But her eyebrows sank low over her eyes the longer she stared at him. "You're too calm, Vince," Sharon ground out.
Vince licked his lips but didn't respond.
"You've been this way the last several days—no, weeks—and I don't get it!" She shook her head. "I don't understand you. Especially since, when Bode first came back, you—you—were his worst critic, Vince. …now it feels as if you and I traded places."
Her phrasing gave him pause, but he nodded, because Vince agreed. In slightly different words, this wasn't the first time Sharon had brought this up.
She huffed and rested an elbow inside the passenger side door, and Sharon rested her chin on her hand. "Say something, damn it."
      "Well, you're not wrong."
Sharon stared at him anew. Her eyes, clear like storming skies, were wide again, but her anger had cooled to confusion.
Vince met her eyes briefly and nodded again, a smaller gesture this time. He fiddled with his keys in hand, not turning the engine over while he said, "You're not wrong about how things were with Bode at the beginning. You were the one with the highest hopes for him. Now…now I'm carrying that hope for you, Shar."
Her lips parted, perhaps with an interruption on the tip of her tongue, but Vince kept on.
"I'm…beginning to think maybe we can't both risk having our hearts broken at the same time," he confessed, his voice cracking just a hint in his admission, and he rubbed that spot on his chest for good measure; even talking about it, a dull ache throbbed where he rubbed. Vince glanced again at Sharon. "We've gotta carry hope between us like a hot potato when it comes to Bode. He's our kid, Sharon, and it's not easy to raise or to love a kid. That's usually why people try to find a partner to do it with."
This time, when he reached for her nearer hand, Sharon was receptive to his affection. Vince internally sighed with relief as he held her hand in his.
"But, yeah, I believe in him. I have hope that there's something we don't understand at work here—maybe something Bode needs help with that has nothing to do with drugs or with his addiction at all. Maybe he needs us now more than ever, to have hope for him…"
When he didn't continue, Sharon dragged her thumb along the back of his hand and eyed him warily. "Just hope?" she asked. "You're not gonna mingle in things in an official or an unofficial capacity?"
Vince shrugged. "We'll see. But, for now, Bode's made his choice to say those particular words, for whatever reason, in front of the parole board. I don't believe for a minute he relapsed, but you don't have to believe that right now. Right now, you can be angry, you can grieve him being back behind bars, and you can focus on getting strong enough to receive Luke's kidney. When you're ready to hope again, you let me know."
For several beats, they sat together, still and in the quiet of their truck, watching friends, family exit and head home after the hearing, taking note of the disheartened expressions the others wore, too, after what had transpired. Eventually, Sharon nodded, and she pursed her lips to hold back a fresh wave of angry or hopeless tears…
…but she squeezed Vince's hand and held on tight as he turned over the ignition, pulled out of the lot, and got them on the road home.
Done for the 5, 10, 20, 50, 70, 100 Fandoms Challenge as well as the If You Dare Challenge (for prompt #208: firefighters) in the HPFC forum on FFN. Ngl, Fire Country quickly became one of my new favs this past TV season, and my father (papa mew) and I enjoyed s1 from start to finish—but we did kinda see that inevitable return to jail coming for Bode, bc if Bode's a free citizen, that would be too easy/would make the series feel a little pointless?? *eyes* HOWEVER, I am v angry with that Mel for talking to him without his public defender there bc…legit wtf; sincerely hoping friends and fam discover and push this in s2 bc that's not legal, regardless of the threat Mel put before Bode. AGHHHH. But I write about the Leone parents for my first FC fic outing! When the show debuted, I was just…ah, Philip Stroh from The Closer/Major Crimes and Megan Reeves from NUMB3RS and Dan Espinoza from Lucifer! X'D Legit, their actors drew me to this series, and I stayed for the fam (both real and found!) feels, even tho sometimes the melodrama is a leetle much for me (but then you gotta *lol*). This series is fun, and I look forward to s2 a lot.
Thanks for reading, and feel free to leave an anon/unsigned review via the FFN link or comment via the AO3 link at the top of the post, especially if you enjoyed this!

the way andor makes it so clear that actually, no, under fascism the trains do NOT run on time, the Empire can be dysfunctional, disorganised, corrupt, staffed to the gills with lackies who don’t care about their job or Imperial purpose, and none of that makes it less terrifying or fucked or brutal or violent

funniest part of greywaren was the implication that if the lady in the opal story was marie lynch (they’re described in the same ways!) then niall’s mother has been periodically booking flights from ireland to virginia solely to break into his house and say heartfelt “fuck you”s to the portraits of him and  mór left in their bedroom. all of this while not doing a single thing to contact her three newly orphaned grandchildren or provide a lick of support. they can handle this

really haunting call backs in andor: the explicit repetition of the idea that no one outside of narkina 5 knows about narkina 5 because no one survives narkina 5, now, and lives to tell the tale. and then in episode 1 of andor timm casually mentions the “shipment from wobani,” which we know from rogue one is another imperial death camp. how fucking many of them are there, and to what extent do galactic citizens- especially bootlickers like timm- just. live with this knowledge. how many of the parts that cassian and bix smuggled at the start of the show were made by prison labour?

i don’t want to be overly essentialist or talk outside my cultural lane but... there is something so intensely not anglo-’murican about the way the way andor treats death and it’s so fascinating and refreshing. like on one level this is a show profoundly about death from the very structure of its narrative, but it’s about how you live knowing you will die rather than the glorious death-from-martyrdom-death-as-redemption narrative, and therefor, inversely, about the profound interconnections between the dead and the living and those on the liminal in-between. now we have maarva’s death, and the very introduction of her death comes through the assembled chorus of communal voices who have come to clean her house and take her to rest. (i also love the fact that maarva died, explicitly, of old age and so many of the other related issues. i don’t think you can make the case that the empire *wasn’t* involved because she’s someone so utterly and clearly destroyed by its actions, but i do like that this was a so-called “ordinary” death, because of the thematic purpose that even “ordinary” deaths are heartbreaking and awful and worth remembering.)
andor makes it canon that there are communal aid organizations- i immediately think chevra kadishas! though many cultures have their own organisations and social structures for how to support the grieving and honour the dead- which is just one of the ways it highlights community and the complexity of interpersonal relationships. the daughters of ferrix are introduced an episode earlier, and i realised on a rewatch with my family that the daughter of ferrix - keezy maybe?- introduced at the beginning of the episode is also mentioned by bee in the first episode as being someone who helps maarva with her dinner and medication. we don’t see maarva’s body go alone, we see her transported through the streets by the women of ferrix. andor makes the case of elder care as communal connection and antifascist work, AND that it is done by the same people as those that bury the dead. and the way that andor is building up t having the season finale be the funeral, the thing that drags cassian home and into the line of fire being his mother’s funeral, the storytelling possible about funerary customs and memorialisation as acts of cultural resistance and aggressive rehumanisation... i’m too verklempt to say much more but i think the way this thematic arc is so intertwined with cassian’s time in narkina 5 and the scene with him and melshi at the end of the episode like! no one is lovingly honouring every one of those men with two-day funeral ceremonies through the streets. NO ONE remembers but cassian and melshi. two episodes earlier ulaf died, but the closest thing he had to the daughters of ferrix was the doctor, the fellow prisoner, who refused to learn his name and quietly euthanised him in the hallway. until we know more there were nearly five thousand other deaths. and the episode ends with melshi saying, it’s our duty as survivors to carry the weight of memory so that other people will know and remember this. they are also carrying the weight of mourning those whose time it was not to die. fuck. this show guys. it has me

The Battle of Inverkeithing, took place on the 20th of July 1651.
The New Model Army led by Parliamentary officer John Lambert defeated a force of Scottish Royalists under the authority of Sir John Browne. It was a decisive encounter of Cromwell’s Scottish War, ending a long strategic deadlock with the Scottish Royalist army under King Charles II, and allowing them to conquer Scotland.
Oliver Cromwell, England’s Lord Protector, had ordered Lambert to cross the Firth of Forth into Fife with 4,500 troops and attack David Leslie, Lord Newark’s supply lines. In response to this threat, Leslie had sent Browne’s 4,000 men-at-arms to drive Lambert back over the Firth. The hostilities began with skirmishes at Inverkeithing.
As Lambert’s Roundheads moved northward, a major battle took place on the flat terrain south of Pitreavie House. In the aftermath, the Scots had suffered a terrible defeat with up to 2,000 killed, many wounded and 500 taken prisoner. One of the prisoners was the Royalist commander himself, Sir John Browne. Another notable casualty was our own Sir Hector MacLean of Duart who tragically died along with some 760 of the gallant MacLean contingent.
The day was remembered very vividly for several generations, the Annals of Dunfermline record that….“A rill, traversing the valley, called the Pinkerton-burn,” tradition says, “ran with blood for several days, and the appearance of the little mounds, or heaps of the slain, resembled a hairst field of stooks of corpses.”
In honour of Sir Hector and his men, the Clan MacLean Heritage Trust raised this monument on the site of the battle - exactly 350 years later - on the 20th of July 2001.

"ON THE JAIL FARM." Toronto Globe. October 10, 1913. Page 6. ---- A famous publicist has likened the composition of the British House of Commons to the first ten-score men who cross London bridge in the morning. Perhaps with equal truth the men met at the jail farm might be compared to the first five-score who pass a city corner. Their chief interest is in the chances of New York and Philadelphia for the pennant, and as for the abstract merits of free trade or protection, Imperialism or Federalism, municipal or corporate ownership, they care no more than the average lawyer, merchant, mechanic, or laborer. There are some scoundrels among them, unless we accept the Major Barbara theory that there are no bad men, but so there would be among the haphazard selections of a city street. The great majority want to do the right thing according to their light and their impulses. They justify themselves to themselves in all things, and never fall with explanations. The difference between the man on the inside and the man on the outside is often only a momentary Impulse or decision. Some- times not even that. The criminal is no more criminal all the time than the hero is heroic all the time, or the poet at the pitch of creative fervor all the time. So the city has substituted for the jail a farm on Yonge street of 760 acres, from which the sentenced workers can escape whenever they feel inclined, where they are treated as ordinary farm hands, perhaps better so far as table supplies and working hours are concerned, and where the ordinary year's routine brings its reward in wheat, rye, and corn, in beef and pork, in fruit and vegetables, and all other products of the soil, including fresh, pure air and agreeable surroundings.
The idea of a prisoner escaping will fill many good people with horror, as an outrage against Divine justice, to be followed by a visitation of wrath from which five righteous men could not save us. Others, more practical-minded, conjure up pictures of all good people robbed and murdered in their beds. They have no patience with the suggestion that the prisoner escaped is more likely to live a decent, respectable life than the prisoner who has served his time. There is the additional incentive; of fear and although there is less faith pinned to it than formerly. It is still an influence. The prisoner knows he can escape tomorrow for the day after, so there is no hurry. He also knows he will be brought back or perhaps transferred, to less congenial quarters.
The habitual criminal and the periodical criminal are called in to silence demands for prison reform. But it is not always the habitual criminal, but frequently the novice drawn in by a wave of criminality as mysterious, except to those who know it all, as, the migration of the robins, who Is found in penal, institutions Julian Hawthorne was not a habitual criminal, but was swept along by a wave of stock-selling frauds. Many habitual criminals practise continually the frauds for which he was sentenced. They are too adroit to be caught. But when a wave of such criminality sweeps along, popular indignation is aroused, and it is generally the Involved novices who are made to appease public anger.
The new building soon to be completed shows none of the conventional aspects of a jail. In architectural design it suggests a university, as Indeed it should, for it is in every sense an educational institution. It is intended for those who late in life feel or manifest the need of special or general education omitted in their youth. Being of more advanced years, greater liberty and latitude can be allowed them than would be safe with younger students. There is an assembly hall where their evenings can be spent in reading, conversation, playing checkers, or engaging in other social recreations. The main feature is that intangible entity, the atmosphere, as all important here as in other educational institutions. It is created and maintained by the special aptitude, amounting almost to genius, of Superintendent Findlay. The students respect him as he respects them. and trust him as he trusts them. When the barrier of official authority Is down and he happens along in time to help with the pitching of a few sheaves or the lifting of a few bags of potatoes onto the waggon, then the sentenced man of many blunders feels the need of a confidant, and throws off the intolerable burden of his many secrets. It is in this freedom of a heart's opening that real counsel can be given and real courage imparted. Mr. Findlay realizes the need of fitting the institution to the man. The age-old blunder of regarding the criminal as a species or type to be fitted into an institution has no place in his system. And he freely voices his hope for the time when diseases of the mind, the will, and the moral nature will be treated as carefully and intelligently as diseases of the body.

Saint of the day August 14
ST. MAXIMILIAN M. KOLBE, PRIEST OF THE ORDER OF THE FRIARS MINOR CONVENTUAL AND MARTYR, This Polish Conventual Franciscan, whose feast day is August 14, was a missionary in Japan before returning to a Poland ravaged by war. Imprisoned at Auschwitz in 1941, he offered to take the place of a fellow prisoner condemned to death. John Paul II canonized him as a “martyr of charity.” https://www.vaticannews.va/en/saints/08/14/st--maximilian-m--kolbe---priest-of-the-order--of-the-friars-min.html
St. Otranto Martyrs, Antonio Primaldo was martyred in 1480 by Ottoman invaders after he refused along with approximately 800 others, to convert to Islam. Primaldo elevated to sainthood in a ceremony on May 12, 2013 by Pope Francis. Aug. 14 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martyrs_of_Otranto
St. Fachanan. This saint's feast is observed liturgically throughout all Ireland and he is patron of the diocese of Ross, where he was probably the first bishop. He was born at Tulachteann, was one of the pupils of St. Ita, and founded the monastery of Molana on an island in the Blackwater, near Youghal. But his great achievement was the establishment of the monastic school of Ross, at what is now Rosscarbery, in county Cork, one of the most famous schools of Ireland, which flourished for three hundred years and survived in some form until the coming of the Normans. Fachanan (Fachtna) suffered for a time from blindness, from which he recovered at the intercession of St. Ita's sister, who was about to give birth to St. Mochoemog. St. Fachanan was revered as a "wise and upright man", with a great gift for preaching; St. Cuimin of Connor said of him that he was "generous and steadfast, fond of preaching to the people and saying nothing that was base or displeasing to God". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Fachanan
St. Werenfrid, 760 A.D. Benedictine missionary. From England, he journeyed to become an assistant to St. Willibrord in his labors to convert the Frisians. He died at Arnhem, in the Netherlands. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Werenfried_of_Elst
ST. EUSEBIUS, ROMAN, FOUNDER OF THE HOMONYMOUS CHURCH ON THE ESQUILINO St. Eusebius of Rome, Pope, The rigorist controversy, whether the church should readmit the lapsed, continued. Eusebius believed that the lapsed could be reconsiled to the church after they had done penance, and his opponent, Anaclitus, believed that the lapsed were outside the church and could not be reconsiled to the church https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eusebius_of_Rome

“The Mauritanian” (formerly “Prisoner 760”) from Scottish director Kevin Macdonald, will be released on Feb. 19, 2021.
With an impressive cast that includes That Rahim, Jodie Foster, Benedict Cumberbatch and Shailene Woodley, the inspiring true story could resonate with AMPAS voters, especially its large international membership.
The film tells the true story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Rahim), who was held captive and tortured by the U.S. government in Guantanamo Bay detention camp for 10 years without a charge or trial. Losing faith, he finds hope in defense attorney Nancy Hollander (Foster) and her associate Teri Duncan (Woodley), who face countless legal obstacles in their pursuit of justice.
Two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster... with a confirmed supporting actress campaign ahead, the veteran could mount an awards comeback.
Oscar nominee Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game”) as prosecutor Lt. Stuart Couch and Woodley will also be submitted in supporting categories.
"The Mauritanian" is produced by Adam Ackland, Leah Clarke, Cumberbatch, Lloyd Levin, Beatriz Levin, Mark Holder, Christine Holder, Branwen Prestwood Smith and Michael Bronner.
