the noble creatures that are referred to as "bl*bfish" are only refered to as such because they take on melted forms once they are taken out of their habitat. in their natual environment, they are completely normal fish. they only become "blobs" once their tissues explode from depressurization, as the natural pressure of the deep ocean is what stabilizes their bodies.
for those of you who disregard the health of psychrolutes and carelessly refer to psychrolutes as "blobfish", your time on this earthly realm is limited.

Some info i found by googling a lot of stuff about Pyschrolutidae (Blobfish)
The Viral "blobfish" photo is of a "Psychrolutes microporos", although many think it's the "Pyschrolutes marcidus", which is closely related
However the common image of "what they actually look like" is neither
Tumblr media
This is a "Psychrolutes phrictus" which have "cirri" or these fleshy spikes everywhere over them, which neither the microporos nor marcidus have. Here's some images of Psychrolutidae without it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also they have actual names!! any psychrolutidae can be called Flathead/Tadpole Sculpins, or Toadfish. The marcidus is also called an Australian Sculpin, and the microporos doesnt have it's own name :(
please tell me if i got anything wrong 👍

Psychrolutes marcidus

A.K.A. the blobfish. Blobfish are found in the oceans of Australia, Tasmania and New Zeland. They live at extreme depths where the pressure is between 60-120 times greater than it is at sea level. Well blobfish are kind of jelly like due to their lack of muscle, they don’t really look like the pink blobs their popularly depicted as. That pink blob happens when the fish are taken up to the surface and thus depressurized (basically exploded).

Enough depressurized blobfish. I'm here to spread living blobfish propaganda.

Look at them. Gorgeous. Wonderful. Living comfortably at depths to over 1,200 meters in the ocean. Be nice to them.

A blobfish, also known as a flathead sculpin (Psychrolutes phrictus), hovers in the caldera at Axial Seamount, approximately 300 miles off the Oregon coast. There are nine species of blobfish, all members of the Psychrolutes genus which live deep in the sea.

man i love those fish as much as the next guy and i think "blobfish" is a repulsive name but calling the species "psychrolutes" is like referring to housecats as a species as "felis"
"i love felis" "heres my drawing of a felis" thats not even its correct scientific name thats a fucking genus

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
The blobfish, or sculpins, have a lot of adaptations to help them survive at the bottom of the ocean; most notable is the lack of a swim bladder-- an air-filled sack that other fish use to help them swim. Instead, sculpins have a jelly-like layer of fat underneath their skin which makes them slightly less dense than the water around them and allows them to bob along the ocean floor with minimal effort. Turns out being fat and lazy has its advantages!
