draco somehow gets into the magical bodyguard business (he's really good at defensive spells or something, idk) and usually takes on like, foreign royal kids just visiting or mostly chill (if dangerous) businessmen who really need him to make sure their portkeys aren't rigged or something. then he gets a client who is 1. mysterious 2. very important 3. has a penchant for attracting danger and 4. as he discovers the first day on the job, harry potter. and he meets harry as he's running into a burning building to save someone's pet fish. draco has absolutely no idea how he's meant to protect someone that reckless (and now he's holding a water glass with a fish in it while harry sweeps the building for pet snails)

Sketch Sunday

hey, what's up— *record scratch* *freeze frame* yep, that's me. posting a wipsday for the first time in months. you're probably wondering how i ended up in this situation.

lmfao no but yeah ngl i've mostly just been chilling on my own a lot lately. like, don't get me wrong. i love winter. but i would love it a whole lot more if it didn't marinate me in darkness sixteen hours a day, yk?

n e way i posted the first chapter of Without Sun a few days ago after having it sit completed in my drafts for over six months, and i already have the next 10k words written but it's still in shambles, i've gotta cut this whole chunk out the middle and rewrite it from scratch bc the pacing is off and i'm trying to do something really specific with Agatha in this chapter that i dunno if i'll be able to pull off—

and so i've opted to completely ignore it to inaccurately draw this scene from the first chapter instead. happy wednesday!

i dunno if i'll finish this bc i'm trying to do a whole bg thing here but i'm crap at backgrounds and learning new things is hard, but like fuck it we ball.

Hi everyone! I’m climbing out of my cave and scheduling this in advance to spread the good word about vampire angst. Because, as anyone who’s read my blog title knows, I am a fiend for vampire angst, and there is some cracking vampire angst in this fandom.

Lamb is a character who really fascinates me. This ficlet imagines a conversation Baz and Lamb would have if Lamb discovered Baz was a mage under less bloody circumstance. This short and sweet fic is something of a hidden gem, and I’ll cry forever that this is a 600 word fic, not a 60k one.

Crowding out the Bad (with Good) by twigs_in_my_hair

Another WIP, and if you are a fan of lore, this is one for you. This AU involves Simon trying to improve his diet with the help of nutritionist (and reluctant vampire) Baz. Twigs devotes so much to exploring Baz’s feelings about his vampirism, and how it has left marks on his life, behaviour, etc. And, of course, there's a lovely bit of slow burn Snowbaz along the way!

Joy and Trust by @bookish-bogwitch

Bogwitch constantly surprises and impresses me with her range. This short (400 words), sweet and heartbreaking ficlet sees Baz receiving a Visiting during the events of Carry On. I love it so much.

Proof of Life by @roomwithanopenfire

What if Natasha Pitch survived the vampire attack, but Baz still got Turned? What would that mean for Baz and the World of Mages? In this WIP, it means a Baz who is even more angsty about being a vampire than he already is in canon—and with good reason. Added bonus is the consideration for the wider canon divergence. What would Watford be like if Natasha is still headmistress but Davy is the Mage? Very intriguing fic so far, especially now we’ve landed in eighth year!

The least Baz-focused on the bunch, this fic is about the Mage taking Old Family children prisoner for leverage and the aftermath. It sees Baz hit his lowest point (gave me the big good sads), and then follows how he and Simon recover from all they’ve been through. Love it.

What would Snow think it meant that I sent this to him? “Every time I said this reminds me of you, what I really meant was: this reminds me of me,” I’d told him once. Why did I ever say that? Why did I tell him anything reminded me of him, ever? Why didn’t I stop for a single solitary second to consider the dangerous precedent it would set, or how ridiculously transparent I was being with my secret garden and my cute snacks and my desperate incentives to let me close? Fuck me, what if he thought this was the reveal I’d idiotically teased to lure him out on a Friday night? "Surprise, Snow! I fell for you the moment we met, spent half the ensuing years mistaking the intense pain of knowing I could never have you for hatred, and the remainder pining after you in miserable silence and planning to die by your sword. Let’s discuss the psychological implications in painstaking detail! I brought popcorn!"

Happy Wednesday! I’m on spring break and blissfully alone at a cafe writing for a few hours this morning. The weather is just starting to turn nice (though its supposed to rain tomorrow) but I can feel spring coming properly, which makes me happy. I hope y’all are getting some nicer weather soon, too.

I’m plugging away on my new WIP. I previously mentioned I’m tentatively titling it Back and Back and Back. I also quite like Start at the End, though I’m not sure if that description will end up strictly accurate, so might not work. We shall see.

I’m going to go ahead and share the premise now (or rather, the inspiration) because why not? I was reading through @carryonprompts and found this one and quite liked the idea. I started daydreaming about it in earnest right away. This was the first thing I wrote:

Past

BAZ age 6, 2003

When I get home from school, Vera always makes me a snack. After that, I’m supposed to do my homework before I’m allowed to go outside and play. There’s always pages and pages of it, and it’s horrid, because it’s so easy, it makes me want to rip it to pieces, or hide it under my bed. And if I have to read one more book about Dick and Jane, I think I might scream. (I’ve read every one of the books in my Beatrix Potter collections. Doesn’t my teacher know that if I can read words like presently, I shouldn’t need to read these baby primers?)

Even though I could do this stuff in my sleep, it’s going to have to wait because today he is here.

Or at least, I think he is. I only saw a flash of red out beyond the trees, but that’s as good a sign as any. I don’t want to make him wait, because I don’t know how long he’ll have to visit today, so I have to plan my escape quite quickly.

I don’t imagine this holding too closely to the book/movie. I’m taking inspiration from parts I liked (and can remember 15 years later lol) but shaping this to be a Watford-era, canon divergent fic with some time traveling/soul mate/destiny elements. It feels very ambitious for me to try writing time travel because it hurts my brain to even consume time travel media sometimes 🤣 and I am much more of a pantser than a planner when I write. Then again, the prospect of pulling off this sort of challenge intrigues me. Wish me luck!

Baz lets out a little puff of air that could be a laugh if he wasn’t so tired. His head lolls back and forth in tiny motions against the wall, shaking no with the saddest whisper of a smile.

“Don’t say that.”

I knock my knee against his again. Like he’s a door and this repeated motion might open him up.

“Why not?”

He reopens his eyes but stares at the ceiling instead of me. It makes me freeze in place, afraid I’ll spook the honesty away. His voice comes out smaller than his rapidly disappearing smile.

“Because it’s cruel.”

Watford 8th year. Mysterious, seductive things keep happening to Simon and Baz. (Note: this fic is about more than just lace knickers; however, they will spend the majority of it in lace knickers.)

“It’s not funny, Baz! I don’t get why you’d do this. What are you up to?”  Once again, I push the covers off my face. “Me? You think I left a pair of women’s knickers in your wardrobe? You probably got someone else’s laundry mixed up in your own. Choose a different pair and return those to the laundry room. Crowley, I can’t believe I have to explain this to you.”  “I— can’t— choose— another— pair!” Snow punctuates each word by lifting knickers out of a drawer until finally he’s extending both hands towards me, fists stuffed full of panties.  “Hell’s spells,” I murmur, for once feeling as lost for words as Snow. “Are you saying all of your pants have been replaced by…that.” I gesture towards his fists.  Snow nods.  “And you think I—?”  Snow shrugs and twenty or so pairs of white-lace knickers raise a few centimeters in the air.  “Why on earth would I do something like that?” Snow shrugs again, which is when it occurs to me that this is not my problem. “Free ball it then.”

We (aka my cousins and I) have come to the conclusion that both Buttered Scones are very tame. Buttered Scone #2 is the most loving and that's the one that roams around the most and the one who sat on my lap. I see the baby again now as I type this.

We also think that Buttered Scone #1 is pregnant.

There are a lot of cats here. All of us have counted a total of 6 (the Buttered Scones, a white cat, a black cat, an orange cat and a kitten) but only the Buttered Scones like attention.

Six Sentence Sunday

Hey friends! Long time no post. I feel like time is absolutely slipping away from me recently, but I finally finished a big project I've been working on since last year and I'm both so excited to share it with you soon and also SO glad to just be done so I can focus a bit more on other projects.

Like this one! My fic Apres which I really can't share much about until it's posted. But here's some relatively spoiler free Niamh and Agatha.

I grab some pants from the floor and get them halfway up my legs before realizing they’re Niamh’s. When I turn to face her she’s giving me a quizzical look, and I just keep tugging them up. She raises an eyebrow. “You can have mine. If you like.” “You’re strange,” she says, and it sounds (and feels) more like, “You’re deeply attractive.” Which, well, I know. But she never lets me know it, so I’ll bask in it, thanks very much. I find my own lacy knickers and toss them into her lap. She doesn’t comment as she pulls them on. “Do you wear these all the time? [redacted]? They can’t be comfortable long term,” she grouses, snapping the waistband. “You’d be surprised.”

“Are those dogs?” I ask. “No,” Ebb says. “Those are paindeer. What the bloody hell are they doing here?” “Paindeer?” I don’t like the sound of that. Not at all. “They’re dark creatures. They’re like muntjac deer, but they cause mischief.” I have no idea what a muntjac deer is, but I don’t tell Ebb that. “They break things, steal, and eat everything.” “Then why are they called paindeer?” “Because they’re a pain in the arse, Simon!”

It's been a hell of a fortnight, which has shaken up all my self-doubts and insecurity regarding TGMY. Like, is this a dumb idea? In a fandom with so much fanon, will me building my own vision of the Watford era be unwelcome or seen as arrogant? For example, having no DeNiall and giving them my own invented surnames? Or will I bother someone with my own interpretations of how magic works, or how pre-CO canon events went down, or what creatures like paindeer might be like? But I also know I don't care when someone else does that (in fact I love other people's interpretations of this stuff) and this is just crappy brain self-talk. I'm writing this fic because I enjoy it. Give me power, give me strength, and please give me a decent night's sleep
