so you may recall that we have a number of spinning wheels, because of who we are as people and also because i love them. and we decided after buying those that we were done, unless the perfect castle-style wheel appealed.

you may also recall that my most beloved wheel is the pipy, made by philip poore in 1972:

the pipy was far and away the most common wheel that poore made, but there was...another wheel. a castle wheel. called the wendy.

when i was gift-shopping for upcoming birthdays the other day, i was on ebay, and one of my previous searches popped up. and i opened it, obviously, just to see, and because i like looking at spinning wheels and seeing what people are selling.

well, there were nine items on ebay that matched that search, one of which was a wendy wheel, made in 1975, not terribly expensive, and less than 50k from my house.

so you can probably guess what happened next.

...ok, actually what happened is that i waffled about it and made sad noises for a bit, and my wife spent an hour or so whispering do it, do it, and then the obvious happened.

so now for real we have our (probably) last wheel (for now)! and buddies, lemme tell you, she's absolutely majestic. she's so small that if you take her apart, i'm pretty sure she'd fit into a carry-on-sized suitcase. she's so small that if i, a normal-to-tall-sized human person stand next to her, the top of the drive wheel is under my knee.

she also has a delightfully unusual tension system! frame flyers were apparently (relatively) briefly popular in new zealand, and honestly, i kinda dig it?

the rod is actually in two pieces, and they're connected by the threaded ball. turn the ball in one direction, and the upper part of the rod moves slightly further out of the ball; turn it in the other direction, and the rod moves deeper into the ball. this changes the tilt of the flyer, moving it slightly closer to or further from the drive wheel, and thus adjusting the tension.

the flyer's slightly cracked, so right now i'm using the single flyer across both wheels, but i'm talking to more experienced people to figure out how best to repair/replace it. other than that, though, she's in amazing condition—it's clear she was treasured, but equally clear that she wasn't used. (there was a giant clump of spiderweb in the orifice, and don't think that wasn't an unpleasant surprise.) but i think we're more than happy to use her enough to make up for the years of disuse.

oh, and in the picture looking down, see that little hole in the frame, just at the bottom of the image? it's so you can screw a block of wood onto the frame and convert her to scotch tension, if you'd like.

she came with her original paperwork, featuring information about how to prepare wool, spin, and knit it, which is also rather charming.

this concludes the most recent (and probably final) episode of 'slightly odd spinning wheels that are older than i am that i have bought for a song'. i know i've said it before, but if you have the chance to play with vintage wheels, please do give it a go. sometimes they're just so-so, but sometimes you find absolute treasures that were made by masters of the craft, and then—hypothetically—you own four of them that collectively have still cost you less than the price of buying one (1) ashford traditional.

#such a good album it is Insane that like. you never really see it talked about outside of certain spaces #and even then it was originally derided for being much less heavy than its predecessors #such a smart album lyrically and even in just like certain songs like peacock skeleton with crooked feathers #which btw is my go-to song to introduce people 2 them #for obvious reasons. the way the vocals play off each other #the keyboard #aforementioned lyrics because man they’re good at writing political lyrics that are simultaneously very pointed and relevant to this day #and also just plain fun. the way they word stuff rolls off the tongue very well #which I suppose is very much in part to Whitney being a very literary guy from what I’ve read up about him #SPEAKING OF!!!!! #sometimes I feel okay about the world and humanity. i went to Austin and watched the bats recently #I learned that every night at least a few hundred people gather to watch the bats fly out from under congress bridge. #people walked their dogs and went on hikes and runs and bikes and so many people walked by but I still noticed when someone made their loop #all the way around the trail. one guy was there with two ferrets. he let them run around on the path and into the grass before he picked #them up so he wouldn't lose them. #there were couples young and old sitting in the grass and groups of friends and children and families and people watching alone #all coming together to see the same beauty ever night #everyone all in one place all together #it was really nice #my art #art #poetry

something difficult about writing/storytelling but only in short disconnected bursts is that writing anything longform is very difficult. there isn't as much time to practice long-term character development or subtlety (implying character instead of immediately clarifying) when its not really meant to go anywhere but a notes app. its a little frustrating...i'd love to do something more longform though. i've considered maybe just doing some short writing scenes in my various original universes a lot recently mostly because i just havent had time to draw anything fancy recently </3 maybe that would be something...

I really can't stand Gil

#Thinking about him for some reason tonight/this morning/esta madrugada #And like I can't stand him. It never changes lol #Someone else besides my cousin's girlfriend is now also reading PH because I asked #and between one and the other I'm falling again in the realisation of how much I can't stand him haha #I went into PH for the first time and saw him and thought 'oh he's neat. really pretty' #and just a few chapters later I couldn't stand the sight of him haha #Shittiest character ever. And I do love shitty characters often but the way Gil is in particular irks me a lot for some reason #I guess it's in part the narration and how hypocrital it is at times when it comes to him #Which would make sense with the ending if it weren't for the fact that I don't think it feels narrated by Gil at all until that very moment #Or not that I recall. I could reread to check again #Anyway... He is the favourite character of my cousin's girlfriend for now because 'he's very pretty and he is so kind and nice' omg #My attempts at keeping my dislike at bay were unsuccessful I think #One of the guidebooks actually brings up the topic about how shitty he is (I'm letting her borrow those too #so I'll wait and see what she thinks about it) which as I told Leigh was very validating #because this may be one of my most unpopular opinions of the manga? xD #On the other hand he was compared in that very fragment to Liam‚ who I also think was quite a shitty person despite how he is constructed #or at least perceived by the other characters as perhaps one of the best persons in the manga #Anyway yeah... im not one who cares a lot abt nice book covers. well the design student in me cares a little actually. but overall i will be fine buying a boring edition of a book if thats whats available or in my budget. and if i can get a pretty one for cheap or as a gift then its a nice little treat. however in saying that those clothbound penguin classics are sooo yass and slay

#i dont really care for elitism when it comes to book covers but for me it is nice to have a couple pretty books #also when it comes to classics theres a lot of options so you can get nice ones for fairly cheap. comparatively at least #the penguin vintage classics w the watercolour designs are nice. and the regular penguin classics are nice too #theyre not Fancy like the clothbound ones or some of the other hardbacks from other publishing houses #but i still like them theyre simple but theyre sleek and look sophisticated and i like the art on the covers #idk i say this bc i dont want to put too much importance on spending a lot of money to have this beautiful bookshelf #bc ultimately its about if its a good book or not #but i am not immune to pretty books sometimes

stammer as the tailor from gent’s playbook, very reserved, quiet, with an excellent eye for details (honestly the evidence i have for his style sense is just that he’s best friends with pk subban so it has to be there somewhere if only by proxy irl) is hired by victor hedman, star of the tampa bay lightning who is every other tailor’s nightmare to dress (huge, opinionated, fashionable)

heddy is decently well-known throughout the league for being very well-dressed & becomes quietly well known for also being one of his new tailor’s favorite loyal customers [heddy has the nicest fabrics. he has his suits the first day a new collection drops & e v e r y o n e is jealous]

stammer’s business booms after heddy takes a chance on him as his first big client & promotes him, heddy sees him grow in popularity & get more clients

heddy also moonlights as a model for stammer’s suits on instagram, initially to help him grow his business because then he won’t have to pay for a model and then because he’s over there all the time anyway because they’re dating (that’s why the model’s face is never in the pictures)

there’s not really a plot to this besides the vague idea of a plot where stammer makes heddy his lucky suit that he wins the cup in & sews a special little tag into the lining of his jacket that says i love you

because love sometimes is picking out the perfect right color pocket square to match your husband’s beautiful suit that you fitted like a kiss to the curves of his huge body

& also sometimes love is making your beautiful husband who makes you beautiful clothing enjoy nice things for himself once in a while, like the fancy watch you bought him or the nice suit you custom-ordered for him (from him) just so you could take it off of him
