Lately I've been playing a game called "Detention". It's a horror game with puzzle elements, and it's set in Taiwan during the "White Terror" of the 1960s. It's a very dark, psychological game and very tragic, but the story and history is very interesting. It's nice seeing a game explore these kinds of themes, and I always enjoy experiencing another culture's ideas about horror. The puzzles are light, which allows the game to move without becoming a walking simulator. There's just enough to keep your brain engaged without being mentally exhausting. There are some very sad and traumatic themes in this game too, so if you're looking for a horror game that is just dumb fun or a jaunt through spooky settings, this may not be for you. (since this post is me recommending this game, I wanted to offer this warning)

the reluctance to accept the possibility of a story being indecipherable or not clear cut is very...disappointing? i find stories that do this as extremely interesting and for people to be obsessed with clear, straightforward answers in all of the media they consume doesn't sit right with me
i've been watching Girl From Nowhere and it's got me questioning at times what is actually happening (the "real") in the show and what isn't (the "illusory, if you will). i love that. in excess it's annoying but GFN does it well, i'd think. my favourite episodes of s2 are episodes 2 and 3.
the blurring of what's real and what isn't in stories is the most fascinating to me, and often i find it is best not to be occupied by what's real within the context of the story and what isn't. GFN in particular reminds me a lot of the concept of Buddhism and punishment (Nanno is Karma after all), and i'm a sucker for media that depicts its characters going through the same punishment again and again fully conscious and aware of their pain as retribution for what sins and crimes were committed.
it brings to mind two games by Red Candle games, Detention and Devotion (the former more specifically), both of which also heavily focus on religion in the context of Asia. GFN is Thai, and D&D are rooted in Taiwanese beliefs, but keeping in mind that buddhism is prevalent in both countries helps put things into a lot of context.
i don't know, i'm just a really big fan of this kind of trope. a notable example i can think of is 'Here Comes The Sun' by Yeo Wei Wei; it too deals with the fantastical and unreal and real all in one.

Nine Sols for PC launches May 29
From Gematsu
Tumblr media
Side-scrolling action platformer Nine Sols will launch for PC via Steam on May 29, developer Red Candle Games announced.
Here is an overview of the game, via its Steam page:
About
From the creators of award-winning psychological horror games Detention and Devotion, comes Red Candle Games’ latest title Nine Sols. The studio aims to deliver a stylized action platformer that’s cohesive and complimentary with its lore-rich narrative. It’s an ongoing, most ambitious project from this indie studio up to date.
Story
New Kunlun, the Solarian’s last sanctuary, has remained quiet for centuries. Inside this vast realm, the ancient gods left mortals with a promised land that is forever protected by the sacred rituals, yet the truth of this world remains unknown to most. Everything changes when Yi, a long forgotten hero from the past, is awoken by a human child. Follow Yi on his vengeful quest against the 9 Sols, formidable rulers of this forsaken realm, and obliterate any obstacles blocking your way in Sekiro-lite style combat. Explore in unique “Taopunk” setting that blends cyberpunk elements with Taoism and far eastern mythology. Unravel the mysteries of an ancient alien race and learn about the fate of mankind.
Key Features
2D Sekiro-lite Combat – Slash, deflect, and charge into enemies and blow them up with the Taoist talisman! Each fight combines fast, brutal action sequences with classic platforming mechanics.
Intriguing Boss Fights – Ready yourself to fight the vicious ancient guardians and gruesome creatures. Be patient and utilize every move in your arsenal, mix up with Yi’s godly bow to defeat these larger than life figures.
Taopunk Setting – When cyberpunk clashes with Taoism, melding sci-fi elements with eastern mythology / fantasy, the experimental genre of Taopunk was born.
Hand-drawn Environments / Animations and Manga – Nine Sols is filled with meticulous hand-crafted, anime-style landscapes, sprite based hand-drawn animations, blending with Japanese manga inspired cutscenes.
Exploration – Traverse in the interconnected regions of New Kunlun. Discover secrets, piece together the story behind Yi’s revenge.
Aids from Inhabitants – Meet interesting NPCs of this world and interact with them to receive upgrades, gain new abilities, and discover useful technology.

I'd like to remind all of you that Devotion is a great game and you should buy it (https://shop.redcandlegames.com/app/devotion)
I was only made aware today that Red Candle Games has a website you can buy it off of, since every other game platform decided to capitulate to Xi's (and by extension, those citizens devoted to him and who are also gamers) bitching and moaning about getting made fun of.

A portrait of a family fracturing, a psychological horror reflection of dues to the divine, a story in two parts of how a simple mistake had drastic consequences.
Devotion, Red Candle Games’ sophomore release, is a game that’s very close to my heart. Though it may well be doomed to cult (har.) status as a result of political factors related to its release, Devotion is a member of a long list of games that I’ve wanted to talk about at length and it feels good to finally be able to make my mark on discussion related to it.
At the risk of sounding naïve it feels nice to believe I could do something resembling shining a light on the subject to prevent it from obscurity.
Perhaps due to the more somber tone of the subject matter, this video is focused on more serious discussion and analysis compared to my other material.
Footage of Detention (2017) used in this video was graciously provided by and used with gratitude to the Virtual Gaming Library. The long play of Detention I sampled from can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl4JjA5CKws&t=0s

The arresting story of Detention provides a great deal of personal introspection into the life of its main character, as well as several of the characters around them, but even more than outright showcasing these events, the game’s use of imagery conjures up far more than may be immediately apparent. The continuous motif of the spiritual being both entrances into darkness and points of safety, along with how well the game is able to use its side-on perspective to indicate character feelings and fear, speaks to a story that was extremely carefully constructed at every point.

Everyone talking about the “Forgotten? Or just afraid to remember” line but the line that hit me most was (spoilers)
“From the white deer to my white daffodil: Fate holds us apart, so let us meet again in another life. To our freedom.” (白鹿予水仙,今生無緣,來世再會。致自由。)
Ughh Mr Chang whyyyy this game made me cry harder than Devotion.
