I have always loved Flapjack, but it took me a while to realize WHY I love his aesthetic/symbolism so much.
Cardinals are such an old school New England bird. They appear as knickknacks and home decorations a LOT up here, especially during Christmastime. And especially when older people are concerned lol. Picture your grandparents' dish towels or kitchen curtains! Cardinals almost have this...old-fashioned sort of feel to them!
Tumblr media
And that kinda makes sense. Cardinals are one of the only flashy birds that stick around all year for us. Our winters can be nasty, and when it's negative ten with two feet of snow on the ground, looking out your window to see a bright red bird cheerfully eating at your feeder is such a...idk nice thing to see? A sign of hope? Of resilience?
As a bird watcher, they are one of my favorite "common birds" to see for sure!
Tumblr media
Anyway, this is a classic bird. This is a bird that you grew up seeing on your grandparents' shelves as figurines, and in your yard at the feeder, and as Christmas ornaments, and as faded pictures on the covers of old magazines. This is a winter bird, an enduring bird, a New Englandy bird.
Tumblr media
And Flapjack is a bird who was made by a VERY old school New-Englander. If I were to pick a bird that someone like Caleb would want to carve, a cardinal would be SOLIDLY at the top of that list.
IDK. It just all strikes me as so classic and fitting!
(The only other bird that comes close to being as classic would be a chickadee HOLY WOW A CHICKADEE PALISMAN WOULD BE ADORABLE…but I digress.)
And all this together makes Hunter having a cardinal for a palisman kinda have the energy of a kid who got a grandparent's hand-me-down. Which...YEAH, TRACKS lol.
And as a final note, Flapjack is SUCH a cardinal. They are very territorial, to the point where they will attack their reflection in car mirrors. They are fearless, feisty, and loud, and the males are SUPER great parents, which...yeah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...that tracks.
Anyway my thesis is that Flapjack is the best ever and this concludes my ted talk goodnight

A large part of the public and the fandom affirm that Flapjack was Evelyn's palisman or was carved by her as a gift to Caleb, but really, those deductions are not solidly based or well argued. Dana's latest statements do NOT confirm that Flapjack belonged to Evelyn, she just states that Evelyn's spirit was NOT in Flapjack but Belos saw it as the culmination of his brother's corruption.
In Hollow Mind, inside Philip's mind we can appreciate paintings that frame his most important memories, and Caleb is present in all of them. There is one in particular in which Caleb is carving the characteristic mask that Philip would later adopt when changing his identity to Belos. But so what? Well, both the writers and animators don't put random details, rather they put them because they are important to a great extent, and they are worth noting, so the fact that they put Caleb carving the mask was not by chance, but because the painting itself is confirming that Caleb, from an early age, was a woodcarver. It can easily be deduced that Caleb was in fact likely to have started the Clawthorne tradition of palisman carving, rather than the other way around.
Caleb is depicted as a carver from a young age.
Tumblr media
Hunter's wish was to carve out his own future, a wish that prompts Flapjack to join immediately. I highly doubt that a young witch who was able to travel between two realms would have so many conflicts for her future.
Now let's think about Caleb's future as an orphan who had to abandon his childhood to raise his younger brother, in a puritanical society in which absolute perfection was demanded of man. The ultimate goal of the Puritan community was to maintain moral purity in all areas of life. The Puritans held that God was the highest authority on any subject of the human being. Only divine grace had the ability to change people, who had to live according to God's precepts as thanks to his mercy. In this way, they thought that they fulfilled what God wanted from the human being and, therefore, they would access Paradise, since God had great plans for those who followed him. Doesn't look familiar? Flapjack's connection to Hunter must have antecedents regarding the desire that brought them together: Hunter wanted to have enough freedom to be able to choose his future for himself without any higher entity, family or society telling him what to do. And that surely was Caleb's wish; freedom, choice and criteria.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In some illustrations of the brothers, already as adults, Flapjack is present on Caleb's shoulder. If he were Evelyn's palisman, despite how close he could be to his owner's partner, it wouldn't make sense for him to be in the human world, it's as if they represented Luz and Ghost together, much less, that he was was so familiar with the house that it belonged to Caleb and Philip.
Tumblr media
Many began to theorize that Flapjack belonged to Evelyn or that she had carved it as a gift for Caleb due to the Wagon Ride in Thanks To Them, in which in the intro, a bird that is obviously Flapjack appears surrounded by fire in the hand of Evelyn attracting Caleb. Such an act could be perceived as symbolic, since the Hollow Mind paintings show that Flapjack was not present at the meeting between the brothers and the witch, and we all know that Philip would not have overlooked such a detail important like that. What is a symbolism? The different forms of expression that use symbols to represent ideas and facts are known as symbolism. Symbolism is the idea that some things represent others. What we mean by that is that we can think of something, say, the color red, and conclude that it does not represent the color red itself, but something beyond it: say, passion, love, or devotion. Flapjack is a red cardinal and represents all of those symbolism for Hunter.
But it can also be associated with anger, aggressiveness, revenge and blood. The series usually handles a lot of color symbolism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I could give an example of the symbolism of the forbidden fruit and the serpent presented in the story of Adam and Eve. The serpent tricks Eve so that she and Adam eat the forbidden fruit which, according to tradition, is an apple. This act is universally known as "original sin." As a result of their disobedience, the first human beings are expelled by God from Paradise. The supposed apple represents the "knowledge of good and evil". Specifically, having their own ideas about what is “good” and what is “bad” instead of relying on God's wisdom and moral law. The snake represents the human desire to investigate and understand the unknown; our curious nature tempted Eve to seek the forbidden fruit to find her own answers.
Dana is well known for putting, or wanting to put, religion-related references, and was apparently inspired by the fables of Adam and Eve for the story between Caleb and Evelyn, and Cain and Abel for Philip and Caleb. Evelyn fills the role of the apple, magic the snake and Flapjack the result of Caleb giving in to temptation. In the story of Cain and Abel; Cain kills his brother because he did not know how to control his jealousy when he saw that God appreciated Abel's offerings over his own. This can be understood, adapting to the mythology of the Islands, that Caleb pleased the Titan by learning and adapting to magic, and Philip kills him out of jealousy when he sees his brother being happy with magic, with Evelyn, with flapjack.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If Flapjack were Evelyn's palisman; he wouldn't have left after Caleb's death. Palismans seem to be passed down from generation to generation, and the only way they stand alone is because either their owners died, or they were abandoned. If Flapjack was Evelyn's palisman, and she only lived with Caleb, she wouldn't have gone off with the Bat Queen. We could explore and get to Dell's palisman, which is a yellow cardinal, similar to Flapjack, and which is surely Evelyn's real palisman, which was inherited until it was left with Dell. I don't think it was carved after Flapjack's disappearance and Caleb's death, because he also has a scar, and that may mean he was and participated in the conflict.
Flapjack is not attached to Eda, despite the fact that the series has made clear his similarities with Evelyn. Flapjack had seen her before Hunter, and even so, it didn't occur to him to go with her, nor with Luz, who was her companion. But he did seem to know the Clawthorne family and trust them enough, therefore, Eda. I gather that because she had no problem pushing Hunter out of the way at Eclipse Lake and calling on her when Hunter disappeared. He knew Evelyn, surely he loved her, but his behavior with Eda shows that he did not own her.
Tumblr media
Caleb represents change and the desire for freedom, reasons why he was killed, certainly. Birds may be the symbol of the Clawthorne family thanks to Caleb, and it would be poetic symbolism. A bird is a universal symbol of freedom because it represents the ability of birds to fly through the skies whenever necessary, to escape and be free. In the same way, a bird in a cage is a symbol of the freedom that has been taken from it. The Gold Guard's mask may have been carved by Caleb like Philip's to play with, and said mask represents an owl. The shield of the Golden Guard, Gravesfield and even the Emperor; they are birds, and we know for a fact that they reference Caleb, who may very well have been fond of birds, and combining it with woodcarving, results in the Clawthorne lore and Flapjack, and if we go further, reintroducing from the palismans to the Boiling Islands, then I detail that theory. Quote: "Freedom is a bird with wings; you can fly. Birds have all the freedom. They don't have to stay in one place all their lives." It's very close to what we know of Caleb.
Tumblr media
There are other reasons that may undermine the popular theory that Evelyn was the owner or carver of Flapjack, and I personally think those theories detract from Caleb's weight in the story. As I listed the reasons, I was asked questions as I wrote them down: If the Flapjack was Evelyn's and she had carved it before the events presented in the story, why would it have the name human food?
All of the birds that the Clawthorne family is inspired to make for their palismans and their family logo are human birds, including Flapjack himself, who doesn't have any whimsical island elements.
Caleb was a woodcarver, and surely that was his job in the human world. Is it not logical to think that it started the tradition of palisman carving?
They're throwing all that data in our faces for God's sake.
Belos, in his fit of rage, called out Caleb's name when he saw Flapjack, before Evelyn's. As Philip fatally wounds Flapjack, he says "Bye, Evelyn" mockingly, but before that he declares, "You wouldn't want me to hurt a precious palisman, would you? On second thought, I don't care what you want." And he proceeds to name Evelyn and impale Flapjack, with many taking those lines at face value. We don't know who he is addressing, when seconds later Hunter regains control of his body, which alludes that his control over his body was weakening, and it is likely that those words were directed at Hunter himself, who seconds later declares his desire to carve palismans. She could also say it to Luz, who she was looking at in the act and showed genuine concern for Flapjack, or Evelyn herself, but she never refers to HER palisman, she refers to ONE palisman. He could also be talking to Caleb, and it would make sense if we analyze that, later, he would enter a mild dissociative state in which he would refer to Hunter as such and after precisely killing Flapjack, he sees his ghost or his hallucination. His enthusiastic "Goodbye, Evelyn" is due to the fact that he ended the symbol of love, freedom and union that marked a before and after in Caleb and in his relationship with Philip, and could also be part of his teasing in his internal conversation with Caleb.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Caleb's first true connection to magic, which would define his decision to remain in the Demon World and become a witch, would be Flapjack. When a warlock carves a palisman, their souls are bound for life, and Caleb carved Flapjack. The series presents many parallels between situations, relationships and characters, and from the current events we can deduce how some previous events were; Luz carved her own palisman, with the help of Eda, who was the one who gave her the wood for the palistrom. And why would it be any different with Caleb? Eda gave her the wooden palistrom because Luz really wanted to be a witch, and maybe Evelyn saw that her good human friend, open-minded and non-extremist, is a carver, and well, it would be nice if she gave him a piece of wood and BOOM! Caleb carves Flapjack, and it would make more sense based on narrative and lore for Caleb to be the one to carve Flapjack, and not be a gift or palisman from Evelyn, since, in addition to detracting from Caleb's own actions and decisions about what he wanted in doing so removes the symbolism of his character and even the relationship between the bird and the Hunter. Going back to the subject of palismans, the fact of sharing souls and that, while Caleb was in the human world; Flapjack linked it to the Boiling Isles. Flapjack was the anchor, which ended up uniting the islands completely. Flapjack represents the link with witchcraft, and at the same time with Evelyn, the culprit that Caleb has known that world. Belos sees in Flapjack the magic that ended up anchoring Caleb to the Isles, and the magic was what separated him from him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The parallels between characters is one of the best-treated topics in The owl house. Eda, Willow, and Amity can be compared to Evelyn from the point you see it, while Hunter, Luz, and again Eda to Caleb. And I think these scenes are an indirect response to what happened between Caleb and Evelyn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is thinking like: I want Maduro to suffer because I am destroying everything he ever wanted, which is everything related to Chavismo. Having already given these examples that are not personal at all and that obviously do not represent the national sentiment of an entire nation; having injured Flapjack, and about to kill him, is Philip destroying everything Caleb ever wanted, everything related to magic. That's why Hunter responds seconds later saying everything he wanted to do, even though Philip didn't care. They were words directed at a man he murdered 400 years ago, from whom he has taken and continues to fight to take everything from him, and that everything is what "pushed" them away in the first place. Obviously it wasn't you stabbing him in the back and chest that destroyed his family, of course not, it was a bird that your brother carved because he wanted to do magic and fly. Yes, Philip, you would make a very interesting case study for psychiatrists. And again, yes Philip, you deserved to be puddled and stomped to death.

How many people on the Boiling Isles are related to Caleb? And are Dell and/or Gwendolyn related?
In The Owl House, there is strong evidence the Clawthornes are related to Caleb Wittebane and Evelyn (Clawthorne?). Many fans point to a connection through Gwendolyn, via the ‘lyn family suffix shared by Gwendolyn, Edalyn, and Evelyn. There is also Gwendolyn’s family knowledge of a human previously living in Bonesborough:
“My great-grandmother told me about a human who once lived here. But one day he just vanished. Rumor has it he left something in the library, and if you can find out more about him...”
Tumblr media
A Gwendolyn connection is very plausible. We’ll get into family resemblances later.
But a connection through Dell has merit as well, given his palisman’s striking resemblance to Flapjack. We’ll call our yellow cardinal Biscuit for now. (Biscuits were ship rations in the late 1500s onward, and absolutely have been eaten for breakfast. They work in any meal. Every meal. Caleb was poor and hungry, okay?)
Tumblr media
The visual clues we get are intermingled between Dell, Caleb, Biscuit, and Flapjack. When Dell is first injured by the Owl Beast, the red blood over his closed eye makes the same shape as Flapjack’s scar. Both Dell and Flapjack are wounded in the same eye, their left. These wounds share symbolic similarities, as they were both from family members: Dell’s injury was caused unintentionally by Eda when she was startled and turned into in Owl Beast form, and Flapjack’s injury likely occurred during Philip’s failed attempt to murder his sister-in-law Evelyn and Philip’s (also unintentional?) murder of his brother Caleb.
(As for physical appearance, note the similar nose shape between middle-aged Dell and teenage Hunter in the screenshots below.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking at older Dell, the scar’s color and shape greatly resembles Flapjack’s head. Both Flapjack and Biscuit have two-peaks of feathers crowning their heads, similar shaped face and chest feather patterns, bicolor wings of light and dark from their respective color pallets, and identically shaped feet. These birds were clearly a matched set, Biscuit likely being carved by Caleb to complement Evelyn’s Flapjack. Sometime after Evelyn’s death, Flapjack presumably left for the Bat Queen, and Biscuit stayed on with the family (I strongly believe Biscuit was Caleb’s palisman, and bonded with his young daughter to relay the love of the father she was deprived of). Biscuit continues to stay with the family to this day, adopting a young witch every 3 to 4 generations. She now belongs with Dell.
It’s also telling that all the Clawthorne family palismen are birds.
Tumblr media
If you’re wondering why Biscuit is a she, check out the Northern Cardinal, which is quite common in Connecticut. I took pictures from this lovely bird website: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Northern_Cardinal/id
Male Northern Cardinals are red, and females are supposedly “brown,” but if you told me that bird looked yellow, I’d agree with you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What about family appearance? We’ve compared Dell to Caleb/Hunter. So let’s take a look at Evelyn. We’ve got a lot less to go on here. Just a few memory photos from Philip’s mindscape. But from what we can see, Evelyn has impressively full hair very similar to Gwendolyn and Eda. The washed out colors of the photo make it difficult to determine an exact hair color, but brown to reddish-brown seems plausible.
Tumblr media
Looking at the Clawthornes, we see various shades of brown, red, and orange (yeah… I know they’re still called redheads, but that’s because the word ‘orange’ wasn’t in the language when redheads first showed up.) These are all plausible hair colors for the descendants of Caleb and Evelyn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Am I saying that both Gwendolyn and Dell are related to Caleb and Evelyn?
Yes!
Yes, I am.
‘But isn’t that gross?’ you may wonder.
Eh, not really. They’re around 13 generations away from their shared common ancestor, Caleb and Evelyn’s daughter. We’ll call her Caylyn for convenience. With each generation, the percentage of DNA from a relative goes down by half. Example: You share 50% of your DNA with your mom, but only 25% of your DNA with your grandpa. The calculation is 1/(2^generation) x 100%, where that little ^ character means “to the power of.” So by the time we get to Dell and Gwendolyn, each would only have 1/(2^13) x 100% = 0.012% shared DNA. That’s very low risk for hereditary birth defects. You probably don’t have your own family tree documented well enough to avoid hooking up with your 13th cousin.
‘But what are the odds of two Caylyn relatives hooking up?’
After 13+ generations on an island? It’s more likely than you think!
Now that you’ve been lured in with screenshots and pretty birds, it’s time to get to my favorite part: MATH!
I mean, EVEN MORE MATH!
And dates. Yeah. They’re important too.
From Masha’s account, in 1613, the orphans Philip and Caleb Wittebane arrive in Gravesfield. Based on how small the boys are compared to a butter churner meant for adults, it’s safe to assume Caleb is 10 or younger. Philip is likely 7 or younger.
Tumblr media
Now fast-forward to Evelyn’s pregnancy. Philip has a full beard in this photo, which means he’s at least 18, more likely in his early-to-mid 20s (most white males can’t grow a full beard until their 20s). That would put the date sometime between 1625 and 1630 for Caylyn’s birth.
Tumblr media
To simplify our generational model, we’re going to assume that Caylyn was born in 1625 and that she and her descendants had 2 surviving children each when they were approximately 25 years old. That means in 1650, Caylyn had 2 children, and Evelyn became a grandmother.
If you’re wondering about my assumptions, the birthrate didn’t fall below 2 children in the USA until the 1970s. And before 1800, the birthrate was over 7 children! But when we look back at the 1600s-1800s, 40-50% of children died before adulthood, leaving only 3.5-4 children surviving to have kids of their own. I went with the assumption of 2 children per generation to account for additional factors such as people deciding not to have kids or cultural differences in family sizes that may have existed in the Boiling Isles. In all likelihood, Caleb’s descendants had a higher birthrate than 2. But we’ll stick with 2 to be conservative, and to make the math easy to see the effects of doubling!
Let’s finish the century out with 4 great-grandchildren (2 x 2, or 2^2) in 1675 and 8 great-great-grandchildren (2 x 2 x 2, or 2^3) by 1700. We get another 4 generations of descendants every century after this. So, by 1800, we have 128 (2^7). By 1900, we have 2,048 (2^11). And by the year 2000, we have 32,768 (2^15) new babies born related to a human! That’s a lot of people! And if we add together the most recent 3 generations, there’s even more living relations to Caleb on the Isles. At least 57,344 people!
Dell and Gwendolyn are 13 generations away from Caylyn, with birthdays approximately in 1950. I get this date based on Eda being in her mid to late 40s at the start of The Owl House (2020) according to Dana Terrance (so Eda’s birthday is ~1975). Her parents would be ~25 years older than her. So, when Dell and Gwendolyn meet, our number is around 8,192 (2^13) descendants of Caleb in their generation. And in all likelihood, Caleb’s descendants are more concentrated on the forearm where Evelyn originally lived. This makes it extremely likely that at least some of Caleb’s descendants marry each other.
How likely? First we need to know the approximate population of the Boiling Isles in the 1950s. Dana Terrance said the BI is roughly the size of Vermont in this interview. And in 1950, Vermont had a population of 377,700. We’ll use this as our rough population number for the 1950s BI. For the group born in 1950 (8,192 of which are descendants of Caleb), they make up 2.17% of the total population. But if we think about the number of people in that generation who would marry someone of similar age, we’re looking at the 20-30 year-old bracket, which is about 10% of the total population, or 37,770 people. And 8,192 is 21.7% of the people in Dell and Gwendolyn’s generation (gen 13). It isn’t a question of if two Caleb descendants got married, it’s a question of how many marriages!
(If you’re curious: [chance of person 1 being a Caleb descendant] x [chance of person 2 being a descendant] x [half of gen 13 population], because we’re looking at pairs of people, not individuals. So 21.7% of 21.7% = 4.7% of marriages in gen 13, times half the gen 13 population (18,885) is 887 marriages!)
Dell and Gwendolyn both being descendants of Caleb isn’t even that rare! The Clawthornes are one of multiple families where both sides of the family can claim human ancestry. It’s amazing how far one person’s genetics can spread in 400 years of breeding!
Alright, let’s get back to the main question: How many people on the Boiling Isles are related to Caleb?
By the Day of Unity (2022), we’re close enough to generation 16 (2025), which is 65,536 (2^16) babies, that we can look at a range between 2020 and 2025. In 2020, the 3 generations alive are 8,192 (2^13), 16,384 (2^14), and 32,768 (2^15), or 57,344 total living descendants. In 2025, the 3 generations alive are 16,384 (2^14), 32,768 (2^15), and 65,536 (2^16), or 114,688 total living descendants. In 2022, Vermont had a total population of 647,064 people, and we’re assuming the Boiling Isles population grew similarly. So we have between 8.9% and 17.8% of the BI population related to Caleb on the Day of Unity.
Belos wasn’t only attempting genocide against witches. Philip Wittebane was trying to kill thousands of his own relatives.
Food for thought.

hold out — hunter x clawthorne!reader
continuation of sorts to comfort crowd
Tumblr media
summary: after successfully escaping the emperor’s mind, hunter runs off after your mother’s attempt to comfort him, and you go after him
a/n: my hunter fics 🤨🤨🤨🤨 are flopping 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼 i don’t appreciate it (ALSO GIGGLES MY REQUESTS ARE OPEN UNTIL THE END OF THIS MONTH!!! FEEL FREE TO REQUEST)
wc: 1.1k
warning(s): panic attack included, general angst, talks of being killed
Pushing Luz further behind you, you snarled at the inner Belos. “You're evil.” You barked at him, but he simply shrugged.
“Can't reason with crazy.”
He throws his arm, which has morphed into a pickaxe, towards you and Luz. You wrap her in your arms and cover her as she screams in fright when suddenly, a barricade of vines and an ice pillar shield her and block Inner Belos's attack. When you look behind you, you’re shocked to find the barricade, and the arm-pickaxe has barely passed above her head.
“(Y/n)! Luz!”
You and Luz look up at Hunter, who summoned the vines and ice pillars and is grabbing onto a thorn.
Hunter turns around with one hand grabbing onto the thorn along with Eda's letterman jacket, and the other one holding onto some glyphs, with a few of them falling to the ground.
From a distance, you can hear your mother from the walkie-talkie.
“Five...”
Luz grabs a fire glyph from the floor, and Hunter leaps down as you, Luz, and Hunter run towards the walkie-talkie.
“Four…”
Luz summons a whirlwind of fire from the fire glyph to create a hole in the barricade that she and Hunter pass through. You grip Hunter’s hand as Luz grabs your hand, dragging you along.
“Three...”
The whirlwind of fire damages and destroys Inner Belos's arm-pickaxe as he retracts his arm in pain. The three of you leap through the hole and run past him.
“Two…”
Hunter and Inner Belos stare at each other for the last time as Hunter is pulled away by you and Luz.
“One!”
You let go of Hunter and dive to the walkie-talkie, and Luz and Hunter kneel beside you.
“MOM, NOW, PLEASE, NOW!”
A burst of light envelopes the three of you, and suddenly you’re back inside the Owl House. Luz and Hunter land on top of you as you emerge in a puff of smoke. King, Eda, Flapjack, and Hooty looking down at you as King and Hooty attempt to approach you three.
Eda blocks King and Hooty. “Don't crowd them!” She turns back to Luz, you, and Hunter, “Are you three okay?”
Luz sits up and gives the gang a blank stare, while you push yourself up off your stomach and immediately look to Hunter as your palisman flies to you in a rush, chirping worriedly at you. As Hunter sits up, Flapjack flies to him, pecks his head, and chirps happily.
Hunter’s wince drops, and he gasps, eyes blown wide. “He knows. He... he knows we're in there. I can't... I can't go back!” Hunter starts panicking and breathing heavily.
“Kid, breathe.” Eda is alarmed and places a hand on your shoulder to stop you when to try to get closer.
You want to help, you know you’re the only person who really can. You didn’t care if your family found out the two of you were dating this way, you needed to be there for Hunter.
Eda offers her hand to Hunter, but he fearfully backs away. He then looks down at his cloak and immediately takes it off, throwing it to the ground. He runs to the door and bursts through it, running away tearfully. You and Luz attempt to chase after him and she stops, but you keep going.
“Hunter!”
He easily outruns you, unfortunately, rushing off into the brunt of the forest, disappearing from your sight quickly.
You spend hours looking for him, and before you know it, the sun is rising again. Disheartened, and nearly give up.
“Hunter, please come out!” You call out, wiping your eyes and pushing your hair back. Inhaling deeply, you squeeze your eyes shut and try to hold back your tears.
Suddenly, Flapjack comes flying out of a bush and you rush to him.
“Flapjack! Are you okay?” You question as the red cardinal hovers in front of your face. He chirps at you and your palisman. “Where’s Hunter?”
Flapjack flies down and tugs at the sleeve of your mother’s grudgby jacket, pulling you along to the location of his companion.
When you arrive, you see the top of Hunter’s head moving back and forth behind a large stone. When you move around in a panic, you find him rocking himself back and forth, mumbling under his breath as he breathes heavily.
“Hunter.” You breathe out in relief, falling to your knees and gently placing your hands on his wrists. He glances up at you and tugs his wrists away, gripping at his hair and shaking his head. “Hunter, it’s me. It’s okay, you’re safe.”
You gently tug his hands away from his hair, and it seems to ground him long enough to recognize you. He leaps into your arms in a fit of sobs, gripping onto your clothes tightly and crying into your chest.
You hold the back of his head with one hand, the other arm wrapping around his shoulder as you hold him close to you. You wish that you could absorb Hunter’s pain more than anything, to shield him from it, but you aren’t holding Hunter back at this moment, he needs to feel this.
“He’s g-gonna—“
You hush him gently, moving the hand on his head further up and brushing some of his hair back.
“You’re safe, Hunter.” You reassure, squeezing your eyes shut and resting your cheek against his head. “I’ve got you, okay? I’m never going to let anything or anyone hurt you ever again.”
His sobs die out into soft and near-silent wheezes after a few more minutes, and you gently push his head up and wipes his tears away.
“What’s your game plan?” You ask in a whisper, your palisman coming and landing on your shoulder as you and Hunter part from the hug, hands connected.
“I can’t go back…” Hunter stammers, shaking his head. You tilt your head at him and think, brows furrowed in thought.
“There’s always a place for you at the Owl House. Always, Hunter.” You promise, squeezing his hands tightly. “But if you don’t stay with my family, we can help you sort something out as soon as possible.”
Hunter nods, and you stand, helping him up on his wobbly legs and letting him lean on you.
“I’ll take you back to my house, alright? Just so you have somewhere safe to make your choice.” You nod, and he agrees, leaning down and placing a firm kiss on your temple.
He musters up a smile. “Thanks, sweetheart.”
You pat his stomach, your palismen fluttering around the two of you. Grabbing his face gently, you pull him down into a quick kiss. Pulling away, you smile bittersweetly at him.
“Always, bug.”

psychopomp s/o hcs ; hunter
Tumblr media
requested by ; anonymous (07/05/23)
fandom(s) ; the owl house
fandom masterlist(s) ; main | hunter-only
character(s) ; hunter wittebane
outline ; “hello! :D i would like to request! could you do golden guard! hunter x psychopomp reader hcs? + a small reaction if they have accessories like a deer skull, etc. thank you, love your works!<3”
warning(s) ; descriptions of animal corpses/parts thereof
note ; definition for those who, like me, didn’t know what a psychopomp was — “Psychopomps (from the Greek word ψυχοπομπός, psychopompós, literally meaning the 'guide of souls') are creatures, spirits, angels, demons or deities in many religions whose responsibility is to escort newly deceased souls from Earth to the afterlife.”
the first time you met was the first time he died — well, the first time he met you at least; you already knew him
several versions of him, in fact, from his originator, caleb, through all of the previous incarnations to him — the last of the golden guards
he was terrified and confused at first, going through every stage of grief at once — panicking without the heart or lungs to accommodate it as you just stood over him and tried to calm him down
and once he settled, hunter finally got a good look at you
at the deer skull obscuring your features and the mixture of animal skulls and bones that hung around your neck, adorned your wrists and outlined your waist
you should have scared him, but being a guiding spirit you didn’t — in fact he felt calmer than he’d ever been in life
and you two just stood in the void and spoke, old friends and strangers at the same time
he told you about the day of unity and about belos and you, in return, filled in the blanks about his predecessors and where he came from — about belos (well, phillip) and about everything you’d been told about him
you talked about the afterlife and what was going to happen to him — with you promising not to leave him until he was ready for you to do so
the mere seconds he lay dead felt like days as the two of you wandered and sat and laughed and cried — you helping him come to terms with his life and him helping you find humour in your role
but not all things are meant to last as you feel his soul slipping away — and in the last moment you have together, you remove the skull from your head and smile and promise that you’ll see him again
wishing him well as he’s thrown back into his body
and cradling the small red cardinal that had saved him in your hands, whispering the thanks of yourself and the dozens of not-quite-hunters that came before — making sure that the small carved creature knew its sacrifice was worth more than its weight in gold
that hunter was safe, that he had succeeded, and that he could finally rest
you could see the way it’s one good eye gleamed up at you, grateful, before it determinedly stood and flew off into the void, soul flickering away and leaving only a shimmering trail of green sparks in its wake
and, several years from then, but also barely a moment later, when the boiling isles have found something resembling peace, hunter wittebane would close up his palisman carving workshop at 5pm sharp (as he always did)
and he’d call briefly at the grave of an old friend, this time joined by a companion he hadn’t expected to see
same eyes, same hair, same skull held loosely under their arm
he’d greet you with a smile and joke about timing, and you’d assure him it wasn’t his — not quite yet — and he’d laugh and pull you into a hug
and you’d stay on the isles for a while after that — a lifetime or just a little beyond it — before returning fully to your duties and your realm
this time with a hand made band around your finger and a mortal soul, crafted from the land he grew up on, that refused to leave your side
and being a psychopomp became a job for two souls, not just one

Jealous
A short Huntlow oneshot where Hunter and Flapjack decide to coordinate their Halloween costumes. Inspired by this by @astrolavas
So glad it’s Halloween and Flapjack is happy and safe and very much alive
———
“Did you... put a tiny wig on Flapjack?” Gus asked.
Hunter nodded excitedly as he proudly showed the group his latest project. After finding the cardinal suit at the store (and on sale, to top it off) Flapjack had suggested Hunter craft him a costume as well and the opportunity was just too good to pass up. So now, Hunter stood proudly wearing his cardinal costume while Flapjack flew around the room in a tiny blonde wig and white cloth napkin that acted as a cape, the Golden Guard symbol carefully at stitched on the back.
“He insisted on the cape, he thought it was funny.” Hunter explained.
“Where did you even find a wig so tiny?” Gus asked, genuinely impressed.
“I made it out of yarn,” said Hunter, his excitement increasing. “I found a tutorial on the line, and it only took three hours to make!”
“Looks like it was time... well spent.” Amity said gently, impressed by the craftsmanship but still somewhat unsettled by the result.
“Not to mention, we can reuse it in the future,” continued Hunter. “I’m sure there are plenty more human holidays that require elaborate costumes. And I don’t see this bit growing old anytime soon.”
“Um... yeah there’s totally so many times you guys can wear those...” said Luz, giving a look to Amity that suggested otherwise as they all processed to return back upstairs to finish donning their own costumes. “But for real, you guys look great.”
As they went up, the door opened and Willow made her way down.
“Hey Hunter, do you think I could use your sick sewing skills to- oh my Titan,” Willow stopped herself in her track the moment she noticed Hunter and Flapjack’s costumes.
Hunter turned to her and offered her a wide smile, holding his breath for her approval.
“Hunter,” her voice held a serious air for a moment before gradually becoming more bubbly. “You look so... adorable!”
He beamed at her words as she quickly leapt down the stairs to see them better.
“Oh my gosh Hunter, look at you!” She gushed. “So cute and handsome!”
“Well, I don’t know if I’d say cute and handsome,” Hunter replied bashfully, suddenly unaware of what to do with his hands, alternately between crossing them and putting them on his hips. He torn between being flustered and allowing himself to have his ego slightly inflated. “But who am I to argue?”
“Oh my gosh you’re so cute, I can’t stand it! I just wanna kiss your little face!”
Hunter stopped breathing, stunned but not the slightest bit displeased. When he remembered how to breathe, he took a deep breath as he crafted the perfect response.
“Well I-I mean-,” he summoned all his courage to look down to her but when he did saw she was actually talking to Flapjack, dressed as Hunter. “Oh.”
Flapjack tweeted happily loving the attention, especially at his owner’s expense.
“Oh, what’s that? You’re gonna kidnap me so I’ll join the Emperor’s Coven?” Willow said in a sugar sweet voice, scratching under his beak. “Oh well you’re so cute, how could I say no!”
“Was I not cute enough?” Hunter muttered in defeat under his breath.
“What was that?”
“Nothing! Ha ha! I said nothing!”
“Well okay, Flapjack,” she said with a wink to the boy in the bird suit before turning her attention back to the palisman. “I was hoping Hunter here would be able to help me sew this patch onto my sweater for tonight.”
“Of course I-.”
“Flapjack, please, I was talking to Hunter.” Willow teased and the bird shot the real Hunter a smug look. He gleefully tweeted* his response before taking the sweater from Willow in his beak and flying it over to his owner as he sat in his shoulder. Hunter’s face turned red at the cardinal’s words that only he understood.
“I do not talk like that,” he said sternly to his Palisman knowing now for sure his face matched the bright red of his suit.
“What did he say?”
“Oh! Uh, n-nothing really, just... weird Hunter stuff?”
“Well I happen to like weird Hunter stuff,” she said, standing on her tiptoes to give the bird a small kiss on top of his head. “Thanks for your help!”
Flapjack happily chirped** in response which made Hunter blush again as his eyes widened. Luckily Willow couldn’t understand him. But Hunter didn’t want to take that chance.
“Ha! Well okay! Sure, I’ll make sure Hunter gets right on that for ya!” the real Hunter said nervously, taking the sweater from the bird, holding it carefully. Willow giggled as she handed him the patch she had chosen and smiled sweetly at him.
“Why thank you Flapjack,” she said, giving him a playful nudge. “Hunter’s so lucky to have you to help him.”
“Yeah, he really is.” Hunter sighed, truly so grateful for the little rascal.
“And he’s lucky to have such a handsome bird to help him too,” she said, reaching up to boop his fake beak. “I’m gonna grab a snack, want me to bring you some worms?”
“I uh... yes?” Hunter hesitated, knowing she was most likely joking but also knowing she spent enough time in the garden to have easy access to worms. She giggled at his confusion, excited to see his reaction when she returned with gummy worms, before making her way back up the stairs.
Flapjack (disguised as Hunter) tweeted*** his farewells to Willow, loving the reaction it evoked from his owner. The true Hunter dropped his smile once Willow was out of sight and turned to throw the sweater at the bird who successfully dodged it and continued to fly around the room teasing him.
“Okay well then, you can sew on her patch for her,”Hunter said in a huff. “Good luck impressing the Captain without any thumbs.”
Flapjack Translation:
*Of course, anything for my dear beloved Captain.
**I think Flapjack is jealous and wants a little kiss too.
*** I shall begin work as I count the minutes until you return, beautiful and mysterious creature.

So we know that Hunter’s palisman is of a Northern Cardinal (a songbird native to the eastern US). It has also been confirmed that it used to be the palisman of Caleb Wittebane, so it’s likely that back in the human realm, he used to see Cardinals and was inspired to carve one as his palisman.

2.
In “Elsewhere and Elsewhen” we meet Dell Clawthorne and his palisman, which looks very similar to flapjack, but it is yellow instead of red. Well believe it or not, yellow Northern Cardinals exist. They are incredibly rare and their yellow pigmentation is caused by a genetic mutation that prevents them from converting carotenoids.

Anyways, I’m no theorist; I kinda just know stuff about birds and watch The Owl House and I thought this was a neat thing for Dana to include in the show :]

I feel like adding my 5 cents here because I keep seeing this and I can't keep it in my mind any longer.
Not that I don't like the idea of it but I kind of think people are reading too much into Belos saying "Goodbye Evelyn" while uh... hurting (to put it light) Flapjack.
Don't get me wrong it's totally a nice idea that Evelyn lives through Flapjack and I love all the different approaches on the matter of who Flapjack was the Palisman to - Evelyn or Caleb but...
The whole Evelyn united with Flapjack after her death and now lives on as Flapjack and saying "Flapjack/Evelyn" thing like they were one character now... I dunno
Belos also called out his dead brother's name in rage when seeing Flapjack the very episode before... so is it "Flapjack/Evelyn/Caleb"? Personally I think no. I'm certain Belos just projects Caleb and Evelyn onto Flapjack for different reasons.
What I'm trying to say is... I don't think when Belos said "Goodbye Evelyn" he meant it in the way of hurting and killing her because she lives through Flapjack but more in the way of finally getting rid of the one thing that is directly tied to Caleb's and Evelyn's love. (Aside from the Clawthorne family but that's not the topic here)
In the hayride scene, where Masha tells the story of the brothers (from Gravesfield perspective), there's a little red cardinal in the core of the fire that Evelyn holds out to Caleb and dazzles him with. In that narrative, Flapjack was the reason Caleb decided to follow Evelyn into the demon realm and leave behind earth - regardless of if he was made as gift from Evelyn to Caleb or if he was Evelyn's palisman.
Flapjack was the reason for Caleb to leave. The Flapjack that was held towards Caleb by Evelyn.
If it wasn't for Evelyn, Caleb would've never seen Flapjack. If it wasn't for Evelyn, Caleb would've never left the human realm. Evelyn's at fault and the one thing that she dazzled his brother with, leading to all the drama, pain, betrayal and fraticide is still roaming the demon and the human realm.
"Goodbye Evelyn" because he's (finally) getting rid of what she "used" to fascinate Caleb enough to follow her. Enough to betray his little brother.
Buuut that's just me lol
I'll gladly stand corrected if this turns out false in the later specials

“So palismen can choose their familiar?” I asked with wide eyes. “Do you think I could get one if I went to your world?”
“Yeah,” Hunter nodded. “Theoretically.”
Hunter was at my house, explaining the magic that was in the demon realm. When I offered to hang out with Hunter, I didn’t actually expect us to hang out on our own. Luz was very adamant and set the entire thing up to be fair. It was kind of awkwards at first, us both sitting in silence. I brought up the topic of magic and he’s been going on explaining everything in great detail. It was really interesting.
“I’m…sorry,” He said sheepishly, looking down at his palisman. “I know my voice is annoying.”
I looked at him confused, “I don’t think so. I…I think it’s nice.”
He looked up at me with wide eyes, “Oh.”
Feeling embarrassed? I’m not exactly sure what I was feeling, but it made me want to change the subject.
“So does your palisman have a name?” I asked. His palisman was a little red cardinal that had a scar over its left eye. It fit him.
“Uh, yeah,” Hunter replied, picking up the cardinal. “His name is Flapjack.”
“Flapjack?” I asked in surprise. I felt a smile curl onto my lips, “Like a pancake?”
“Pancake?” He asked in confusion. His magnta eyes searched mine, like he’d magically find the definition.
“You guys don’t have pancakes?” I asked, flabbergasted. He shook his head slowly, reminding me of a kid who just got scolded. “Omg I need to…you need to try one. I think we’ve got a pancake mix.”
I stood up from my bed, walking quickly to the kitchen. My mom paid us no mind as I searched the cabinets. I heard Flapjack chirp and Hunter hush it, but I ignored it. My mission was more important. Mission, introduce Hunter to the wonderful world of pancakes and breakfast foods. I let out a victorious ‘yes!’ as I indeed found the pancake mix. I checked the expiration date, just in case. I mean I don’t really cook often and my mom’s too busy too.
I quickly gathered the other ingredients, not like there were many more, and got the batter ready. I put a pan on the stove and set it to medium heat, now waiting for it to heat up as I got out butter.
“Are you sure this is safe?” Hunter asked.
“Yeah,” I nodded, buttering the pan. “It's a pancake mix, so most of the ingredients are already mixed for you. That’s why I just had to add milk, to make it a batter.”
I poured the batter into the pan once it was hot enough. While it cooked, I grabbed a few plates. Flipping the pancake, I cringed at how it was burned. So I’ll scrap this one and flip it sooner, noted.
“It smells really good,” Hunter muttered.
“Just wait till you taste it,” I smirked. “This is easy to make, even for someone who never cooks, like me.”
The next few pancakes were the perfect golden brown, and I internally pat myself on the back for how good they looked and smelled. I divided the pancakes between both plates and set one in front of Hunter. I then went to the fridge and grabbed the syrup. Can’t forget the best part! I rushed back to the dining room table and sat next to him.
“Okay, so try a pancake without the syrup, and then with it,” I said eagerly. Hunter nodded and hesitantly cut into his stack and took a bite. I sat on the edge of my seat, curious to what he thought of it. It’s not everyday you get to introduce someone to something. Hunter’s eyes widened as he chewed, glancing at me then back down at the food.
Swallowing, Hunter spoke up, “This is amazing!”
“You think that’s good?” I asked with a smug grin. “Now try it with some syrup!” He did just that and he seemed even more floored. I grinned, proud of myself. Now he needed to try some homemade pancakes. I ate my pancakes as well, content with the outcome of this little expedition.
Flapjack hopped over to me, and I raised my hand up to pet it. Just in case it didn’t want to be pet. It twittered happily as I brushed its wooden feathers. Even though it was wooden, it was still soft.
“Who's a cute little guy,” I cooed, petting the birds back. I heard Hunter choke, and I looked up in concern. He sputtered as he swallowed the rest of the water he was drinking, his face bright red. “Are you okay?”
“Mhm,” He nodded, not meeting my gaze, but showing off a shaky smile. Flapjack hopped back over to Hunter, then flew up into his hair. “Hey!” The bird just chirped and made a little nest in his hair. Adorable.
I rested my arm on the table, put my head in my hand and stared at Hunter, “So, want to learn how to play Mario Kart?”

Writing is hard when your so full of tired sleepy
I got creative with the prompt and I’m not sure if this qualifies as a chase but oh well, I really like this one anyway
Flyer Derby
Tumblr media
Tickletober Day 6: Chase
Fandom: The Owl House
Characters: Lee! Hunter, Ler! Emerald Entrails
Summary: Willow makes a bet with Hunter to see if he could beat the rest of his team. Shenanigans and hijinks ensue. (I love those words :3)
Warnings: Tickle Fic, light restraints at the end, not proofread.
——
It was becoming increasingly rare that the Emerald Entrails would have the chance to ever practice or play together, which was surprising. Their teammate, Hunter was literally living in the school now but most of them seemed nervous, like they were in the calm before the storm. The Day of Unity hung over them all, their worries about it only becoming worse as Hunter revealed it’s true nature to the rest of Hexside.
That was exactly why it was so important for them to just let loose even if it was just for a little while. Just one evening where everything would be okay, so they could actually experience the calm they’d been so desperate to receive.
This game would be a little different then all their other causal matches of Flyer Derby however. Willow had made a bet with Hunter, the reason unknown to him, maybe she just wanted to see how good of a player he was or just wanted to see him get tickled silly. The idea was Hunter would play against all four of his teammates, the catch being they were only allowed to touch him by tickling him so it was a little more fair, or unfair depending on how you view it.
Hunter, terribly flustered by the idea since he knew his own sensitivity, still accepted for whatever reason. Maybe he wanted to get tickled by Willow, or maybe he just wanted to show up his team in anyway he could. He was probably just too flustered to reject the idea entirely, barely able to word his agreement to her.
And now here he was, standing on the opposite side of the lengthy, trap filled pitch to all his friends, seeming pretty eager to wreck the poor blonde. Anticipation was threatening to plunge deep into his heart as he readied himself, not able to shake that light nervous feeling that buzzed in his mind. The Grimwalker had a tight grip on his staff, his cardinal Palisman sat motionless at the end. It was a bit reassuring to know at least one of his friends was on his side for this game.
‘Don’t you lot have a plan for this?’ Viney asked, leaning back on Puddles as she stroked the Griffin’s neck. ‘That guy is..well was the Golden Guard, do you really think we can just swoop it and steal a victory from him?’ She fretted, but wasn’t met with much worry.
‘Well, maybe we wouldn’t win against any other Golden Guard, but our one happens to be real ticklish, there’s no way he’ll be able to resist this!’ Willow smiled at Viney, placing a hand on her shoulder casually.
‘Oh, and go for his ribs, that’s a killer spot!’ Gus said loudly, making sure Hunter heard, making his cheeks already to a dark shade of red. He squeaked a little under his breath, already thrown off guard and just anticipated would what happen next. Flyer Derby was nerve wracking enough but mixing it with something as silly as tickling…he was just glad he didn’t have an audience, something he’d been fairly insistent on since he wasn’t fond of being tickled out in the open.
Gus then cast an illusion of himself, to act as a makeshift announcer to the centre of the field as the two teams stepped forward closer to the centre of the pitch.
‘The rules for this one are a little switched up to how we usually do it, folks,’ Gus’ illusion smiled widely, keeping his hands behind his back. ‘Hunter will be trying to steal our teams flags, and if he manages that, he wins the bet! Our team, the better team, can only interact with him by tickling him until he surrenders, which is when Willow will win the bet.’
‘If,’ Hunter said, ‘If Willow wins!’ He smirked, trying to alleviate some of his tension by getting competitive.
‘Good luck with that, blondie!’ Skara shouted from across the field, not wanting the opposing team to get the last word in. Hunter just made a ‘hmp’ sound, readying his staff to his side, while his eyes narrowed on the prizes in front of him. Four flags dangling on his friend’s staffs, all he had to do was grab them quickly and he’d be spared from the merciless tickling he was sure to be forced through in this game. I mean, he could handle that, right?
‘Three,’ Hunter hopped on his staff.
‘Two,’ He watched the other side do the same.
‘One!’ In a split second, all four of his friends had managed to split up in other directions, with Gus summoning a cloud of smoke just to make it even harder for him to keep track on who was who. Hunter gritted his teeth a little, feeling a little better now that the game had actually started, but still had the ever looming threat of tickling hanging over him.
The boy quickly took up in the air, his eyes were first set on Skara who seemed like the easiest to take out. Hunter quickly found himself following behind d the bard student, gaining on her at high speed. The girl squeaked as she realised she was a target, sourly regretting trying to get in the last word now.
Hunter waited until just the right moment, keeping all his focus on the flag in front of him, before blipping through the air with the help of his Palisman, grabbing Skara’s flag before she could even process what happened. Once she did though, she immediately plunged towards Hunter, not to regain her stolen item, no, she decided to be petty and tickle him for the Hell of it.
Skara’s nails scratched down from the back of Hunter’s knees down to his calves, making the poor blonde squeal as he kept his legs as still as possible, not wanting to let go of his staff. He sped up, just causing her nails to trail further down his leg, ending up at the top of his left boot which she managed to pry out, letting it fall to the ground.
Hunter huffed as he managed to get away, looking a little flustered now that he was more exposed but at least he was far away enough from Skara now. All he had to do was find the others and-
‘Gotcha!’ Viney yelled triumphantly, wrapping one arm around Hunter’s waist securely. The boy fell back on his staff a bit, having to lean against Viney’s side for support; a parasitic way of pinning someone.
‘Viney, no fair!’ Hunter whined, still trying to wriggle about in her grip but he was quickly shut up by a couple fingers scribbling against his tummy.
‘Oh hush, Hunter, we both know your loving this, you wouldn’t of agreed otherwise!’ The brunette smirked, snaking her hand around his back to squeeze at his sides, forcing him to crash into her even more.
‘N-nahahahaah, I dihihihhidn’t!!’ Hunter tried to protest but it was hard to take him seriously through all his cackling and the fact that his face was just getting redder and redder. Getting teased really threw Hunter off his game, it was like he couldn’t fit clearly when being tickled.
‘Coochie coochie coo, gigglebug!’
Unluckily for him, Viney caught onto this pretty quickly. The babyish teasing was almost too much for Hunter to bear as he felt his ears start to heaten from all the teasing. He curled his arms to his sides and wriggled about in her grip as much as he could but he just couldn’t get away from her.
‘Eheheheheheheh!’
Gasping, Hunter reached out to his Palisman, Flapjack, and let him return to his normal form, causing his staff to disintegrate right from under him. Hunter swiftly grabbed Viney’s flag as he began free falling, sticking his tongue out at her as Flapjack flew right back down to him, turning back into a staff as Hunter caught him.
‘Ha! I had no idea that would work!’ He smiled, repositioning himself on his staff as he quickly got back into flying around, not wanting Skara or Viney to catch up to him.
Now came the part he was dreading the most. Willow and Gus. Gus’ illusions could cause a real problem for him, he had to be checking just to make sure the flags he had caught so far were real and he was sure the boy was planning something. And Willow…was Willow. The boy had a crush on her for crying out loud, he’d shut down if she even got the chance to tickle him.
Luckily he wouldn’t have to find her, as Willow would find him first.
‘Oh, Hunter! Behind you!’ The girl sang, causing Hunter’s blush to immediately return as he shot around, though he saw Willow just standing there. Standing on her staff.
‘You should be more careful with your illusions, Gus.’ Hunter pointed out casually, immediately darting for ‘Willow’, feeling more confident now that he knew it was just a disguise. But, as he drew near, he failed to realise how well his friend’s mirages has developed as he had not only created an illusion of Willow to throw Hunter off but was concealed just a couple feet to the left of it. And when Hunter drew near, he pounced on him.
The boy jumped from his own staff to Hunter’s, letting his chameleon Palisman nestle up on his shoulders. With a crash landing, he immediately clung onto Hunter, a little scared he would fall.
‘Oh, come on, you totally stole my- mahahahahave!’ Hunter barked with laughter as his friend began squeezing his hips, making him yelp and jump all about. He did consider doing his staff disappearing trick that he used with Viney, but he didn’t want to hurt Gus, probably something the boy planned by jumping onto his staff. The only thing Hunter could really do was sit there and take it.
‘Come on man, just give in, you know you can’t beat me and Willow!’ Gus cooed from behind him, finally beginning to prod at those sensitive ribs of his, making Hunter Damm near shriek and madly thrash about on his staff.
‘EEEK!! WAIHAHAAHT, NAHAHAHA GUHAHAHAHAAHS!!’ Hunter nearly screamed in laughter, barely able to keep a hold of his staff. Gus gripped onto him a little tighter, not wanting either of them to get tipped off. Gus would keep at it, scribbling and scraping at Hunter’s ribs with no mercy and just when the blonde thought things couldn’t get worse, it did.
‘Your really doing a number on him, aren’t you, Gus?’ Willow giggled, flying down next to the sight of the two boys. She casually reached over and took back Hunter’s stolen flags.
‘NAHAHAHA FAIHAHAHAR!!’ Hunter bellowed with laughter, leaning hunched over on his staff to try and get his ribs away from his friend. In return, Willow wriggled her nails against the back of his neck, making him arch right back upwards.
‘Poor boy, I almost forgot you were THIS ticklish,’ Willow chuckled, prodding along one set of his ribs while Gus scratched at the other. Hunter, who had just lost all his progress and was now having his worst spot tagged team by two skilled lers, caved in almost immediately.
‘I SUHAHAHAHRRENDER!!’
With that, Gus hopped back on his own staff while Willow gently helped Hunter back down to the ground, it being a bit hard for the tickled out boy to fly.
‘You know, you handled all that really well! I mean, you managed to best two of our team members and looked good doing it! I’m proud of what you did today, Hunter!’
She smiled at him as the boy blushed more, his smile practically beaming.
‘T-thsnk you, Captain, that, uh, means a lot!’ Hunter cooed as he hopped off his staff, Willow next to him as the rest of the Emerald Entrails stood around them.
Though almost immediately as Hunter stood on the ground, two vines wrapped around his wrists and pulled them behind his back, beneath his shoulder blades. A couple more gently pulled him down onto his knees, all while Willow smirked at his confusion.
‘Don’t tell me you forgot our bet? I’m pretty sure we agreed that if you lost, I get to tickle you for ten minutes!’
Hunter’s whole face went beet red as Willow kneeled down across from him, his eyes wide with anticipation.
‘CAHAHAHPTAIN, NAHAHAHAHAHA!!’

I was looking for cardinal themed outfits, as one does, and this image appeared in my search:
Tumblr media
Which got me thinking, Dell's palisman could very well be a female cardinal
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It does look more like a yellow cardinal, which Im pretty sure it's a male cardinal with a color mutation seeing by the other traits it has, but i still think it would be fun if it was a female cardinal (and yknow, its a cartoon, colors usually are more vibrant/saturated than normal)
(Its also curious that its beak is black instead of how it is with flapjack, with a red beak)
Not to mention that, at least on the photo i found, the female seems to have little eyebrow like plumage, like the palisman has!
I think it would be interesting if this was the case, if she was passed down through generations of clawthornes, first belonging to the wittewife, and then her and Flapjack would have been a pair!

(flapjack design by beaniewinnie96) so i saw this post and it got my wheels turning for a “human” design for dell’s palisman :) we don’t know yet if she’s a girl or not (his palisman may be a yellow cardinal for all we know) but i still like the headcannon that she’s a female red cardinal (females are brownish, slightly yellow)
